LOCAL NEWS
Plan for soaring new
Parra tower revealed
ELLIE BUSBY
Fresh plans to turn the Club
Parramatta car park into a
multi-million dollar 16-storey
tower, featuring both shops and
accommodation, have been
revealed.
The proposed $70 million development
at 7 Macquarie Street,
Parramatta, will aim to provide
affordable rental options and bolster
a “sense of community” if approved.
Under the plans, the existing
carpark would be demolished to
make way for a three-storey podium
with a 13-storey tower above accommodating
1,907 square-metres of
non-residential floor space and 273
co-living rooms.
Planning documents said the
mixed-use building will “contribute
towards a vibrant cosmopolitan
culture” within the Paramatta CBD.
“The redevelopment of the site will
contribute to the vibrancy, economic
success and housing choice within
the Parramatta CBD,” the Statement
of Environmental Effects (SEE) said.
“The redevelopment of the site
will deliver public benefits for
the community including retail
and office uses. The proposal will
substantially enhance the amenity
and liveability for residents, workers
and visitors.”
The plans are set to be determined
by the Sydney Central Planning
Panel.
The ground floor would feature a
shared lobby space, concierge and
retail space, with level one to house
two large commercial tenancies, a
communal space and terraces on
both sides.
Level two is to contain the primary
indoor communal facilities for the
co-living component of the development.
The internal area will be
divided into multiple lounge areas,
a communal kitchen, communal
dining areas, staff rooms and office,
toilet facilities and a co-working
space.
Located on the top floor of the
podium, level three will feature
rooms and communal terraces for
“quiet enjoyment by residents.”
22 co-living rooms will stretch
from levels four to 14 of the tower,
while level 15 will include 9 rooms
plus a rooftop terrace and swimming
pool.
A different form of accommodation
to regular apartment living, co-living
amenity spaces are provided
via communal living and outdoor
spaces.
“The proposal demonstrates a
commitment to improving housing
diversity in the locality and providing
co-living housing that responds
to the needs, lifestyle and values of
the local community,” the submission
states.
“By providing co-living accommodation
close to transport nodes
within a city centre, residents will
benefit from reduced commuting
times, improved access to employment
opportunities and a greater
range of services achieving the NSW
Governments objective for a walkable
and 30 minute city.”
This new proposal comes after
original plans were approved back
in 2022 for a 13-storey commercial
building with a four-storey podium.
According to the SEE, this current
Development Application represents
a “significant improvement”
compared to the original plans,
citing a reduced traffic impact and a
more “slender” design of the tower as
the reason.
What do you think of the plans?
Afternoon where innocence was lost
On any given day, in any given community
across our country, shopping
centres are filled with people with varying
purposes.
They are more than just a place with a food
court, ever-changing fashion shops and impossible
to navigate parking lots.
For many, they are a salvation.
The elderly resident looking to pass some
time in their day; youth looking for a bit of independence,
shopping with friends and starting
to mature; and mums and dads pushing
prams, often escaping the mundane that can
come with being a parent in the first few years.
It’s why the horror of last Saturday’s attack
at Westfield Bondi Junction has hit so close to
home for everybody. There are very few of us
who could not put ourselves in the position of
the victims.
The local shopping centre on a Saturday
arvo? We’ve all been there. Safe, bright, lots of
people, familiar.
Right now, it feels like that has been taken
away. What a tragic, senseless loss of life.
An attack that has left us stunned
The irony is that Saturday was such a beautiful
day. Where were you? What were you
doing? That afternoon I was walking deep
in conversation with a friend along the cliffs
from Coogee to Clovelly. There was the happy
sound of kids playing and people lounging in
groups.
The surf sparkled. Nature had never felt
more vivid. It was still a few hours until a golden
sunset.
Down we went past the turquoise waters of
Gordon’s Bay. Around the bend, where there
was a raucous party at the surf club. Then past
the carefree lawn bowlers in Hawaiian shirts
and onto the rickety walkway alongside Waverley
Cemetery.
It is an idyllic path most Sydneysiders have
traversed in their lives. We could have been in
San Francisco, Cape Town, the Amalfi Coast,
even paradise itself.
Only then did family members start checking
in – and we learned the horror of what was
happening just a few kilometres away at Westfield
Bondi Junction.
Early media reports painted a confused picture,
indicating a possible multiple-perpetrator
event. With local communities riled over
events in the Middle East, terrorism seemed a
possibility.
However, it soon became clear the attack was
a random, shocking act from one of society’s
loners, a man with a documented history of
mental health problems. What caused him to
finally snap is now the subject of investigation.
However, it is abundantly clear from the tally
of those killed and injured that women were
targeted – even a baby – and it is hard to imagine
greater cowardice. Menacing innocent
people with a blade as they happily went
about their business on a Saturday afternoon.
Shopping for cosmetics. Trying on clothes.
Pushing a pram with their newborn child.
As we learn the names of those killed and
more about their lives, each update brings
waves of sympathy, compassion and pain.
Chinese international student Yixuan Cheng.
Artist Pikria Darchia, from Tbilisi in Georgia.
Young mother Ashlee Good. Dawn Singleton,
planning for her wedding. Faraz Ahmed Tahir,
a refugee from Pakistan who had just started
shifts as a security guard. Jade Young, an architect
from Bellevue Hill.
A kaleidoscope of personalities drawn to the
cosmopolitan beachside suburb, each for different
reasons.
Everyday people with their own struggles,
but also hopes and dreams for the future, and
people who loved them dearly.
While crimes happen every day, there is
something extra shattering about a random
attack in a public space in broad daylight. It
underlines how the very act of venturing into
a shopping centre, at a basic level, is a display
of trust and confidence in our fellow human
beings. How impossible would it be for society
to function if every time we boarded a train,
or browsed through the supermarket aisles,
we had to worry about what lurked behind the
corner?
We don’t know the victims, but in a sense we
Business Directory....................28-29
Sport......................................................30-31
do. Because they were ordinary people, thrust
into extraordinary circumstances. We could
have been them. Instead, they were standing
in for us.
The attack has left our city in shock. It’s a
similar feeling to the Lindt café siege in Martin
Place or Port Arthur in 1996 or Strathfield in
1991, all days etched in the memories of those
who lived through them.
Just last Sunday, I was in Bondi Beach and
you could sense the shift. Girls hugging each
other tighter as they walked along the promenade.
A man rattling a few coins into the cup of a
beggar that he might not have done before.
People glancing up alertly at the sound of anyone
acting unusual.
There are many troubled people in our society.
Mad, bad, or a combination of both.
Thankfully, most receive help or contain their
turmoil within. Mass atrocities that endanger
dozens of people like the Bondi Junction attacks
are rare.
But when they happen, good people have to
stand up. Saturday’s events reminded me of
the scene in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ where Atticus
Finch and the town sheriff shoot a rabid
dog that is threatening the town.
In the shopkeepers who protected others,
those who wielded bollards atop escalators,
the men who took Ashlee Good’s bloodied
baby and bound wounds so that it could be
saved, and finally the clinical actions of Inspector
Amy Scott, we saw the courage and
the decency to do what is right.
Key Light Rail link open
More than 200 workers involved in building NSW’s second longest steel arch bridge
ELLIE BUSBY
The multi-billion dollar
Parramatta Light Rail has
ticked off another major
milestone, with the Bidgee Bidgee
Bridge over James Ruse Drive now
officially open.
As testing continues to ramp up
ahead of tram services beginning
later this year, an opening ceremony
was recently held for the largest of
six new bridges built for the project.
At 64-metres-long and 16-metreswide,
the Bidgee Bidgee Bridge
connects to the Parramatta Light
Rail’s 5.7km shared walking and
bike-riding path between Carlingford
and Parramatta.
It will also link commuters to the
Rosehill Gardens and Tramway
Avenue Light Rail stops on either
end of the bridge.
State Member for Parramatta
Donna Davis unveiled the plaque to
commemorate the bridge’s opening.
“It is also the state’s second longest
steel arch bridge, and one of six
new bridges delivered as part of the
Parramatta Light Rail Stage 1,” she
said.
“I am really pleased that it also
Parramatta Councillor Patricia Prociv, Donna Davis and Luke Magee.
Photo: Melinda Jane.
includes a shared pathway, a link
that our city desperately needs.”
Following community consultation
and close engagement with
Dharug Aboriginal language
specialists, the bridge was officially
named in 2022 after local Aboriginal
Elder Bidgee Bidgee, a leader of the
Burramattagal clan of the Dharug
people.
A tracker for Governor Macquarie
and named Chief of the Kissing
Point tribe for his work in building a
peaceful community, Bidgee Bidgee
brought different cultures together,
helping to shape the area’s history.
The bridge intends to stand as a
lasting tribute to Bidgee Bidgee’s
legacy, as well as recognise the
contributions of all First Nations
people.
“He was the leader of what became
known as the Kissing Point Tribe,
River People who lived on the river
flats, mangroves, swamps and
creeks of the Parramatta River,”
Davis added.
“Bidgee Bidgee stood in the gap
between the old world and the new,
much as this bridge does today.
“I’m proud of what this bridge
stands for and for the hard work that
the NSW Government is undertaking
in bridging the old and the new
through connectivity, modern links
and sustainability.”
More than 200 workers were
involved in building and moving
the 1425-tone steel arch for the
bridge, which was crane-lifted into
place overnight in 2021.
It’s been created with Australian-made
weathered steel, which
intends to minimise future maintenance
and reduce disruptions to
light rail network operations.
Parramatta Light Rail Project
Director Craig Paterson described
Bidgee Bidgee Bridge as an “engineering
feat” and praised those
involved.
“The Bidgee Bidgee Bridge is actually
the second longest steel arch
The new Bridge is the second
longest steel arch bridge, behind
the Harbour Bridge.
bridge, behind the Harbour Bridge,”
he said.
“It connects the Parramatta Light
Rail’s 5.7km shared bike and walking
path.
“Since the path opened it’s been
fantastic to see locals and visitors
alike getting out and about and
really enjoying the sites of iconic
Parramatta.”
Spicy restaurant strip proposed Rubbish overhaul in Parramatta
ELLIE BUSBY
An artist’s impression of what the front of the new restaurant could look like.
ELLIE BUSBY
Plans to transform a Harris Park
cottage into a ‘Spice Alley’ style
restaurant precinct – inclusive of a
rooftop garden and five food outlets – have
been revealed.
The famous Wigram Street Indian restaurant-strip
could soon see even more food
options come to ‘Little India’, If a Development
Application (DA) gets the tick of
approval from City of Parramatta.
The plans intend to transform the existing
building at 63 Wigram Street, Harris Park,
into a restaurant with an outdoor dining
area, featuring a range of mixed street food
operators.
The existing driveway would become an
accessible thoroughfare between Wigram
Street and Gordon McKinnon Lane, with a
new carpark to be constructed at the rear of
the building.
The new dining space is expected to operate
between 10am and 10pm, across seven
days, with a maximum of eighteen to twenty
staff members to be on-site at any given time.
The restaurant will have space for a maximum
of 90 people and 35 people at the food
outlets.
The Harris Park building is one of three
single-storey cottages on Wigram Street,
which make up a locally listed heritage item.
The DA said the proposed design will
respect the existing character of the
surrounding neighbourhood.
“The design will respect existing setbacks,
height controls and architectural language
by fitting into the overall character of
the heritage item and the wider Heritage
Conservation Area,” the document said.
“There will be no physical impact to the
neighbouring cottages, no.’s 59 – 61 and 65
Wigram Street, heritage items in the vicinity
and the Harris Park West Conservation
Area.”
Parramatta is getting ready to hit go on
Food Organics and Garden Organics
(FOGO), as the Council prepares to
roll out its new waste collection service from
November this year
This will include a 240-litre green lid
FOGO bin for food scraps and garden waste
that will be collected weekly, an 80-litre red
lid garbage bin – previously 140 litres – for
general waste collected weekly, as well as a
240-litre yellow lid recycling bin collected
fortnightly.
The new service will allow residents to
recycle their food scraps in a FOGO-friendly
bin picked up weekly and give residents an
additional 120 litres in overall bin capacity
each fortnight at a reduced cost.
Residents will also receive a starter pack
to help them make the change, including a
seven-litre kitchen caddy with compostable
liners to collect food scraps which can then
be emptied into the FOGO bin.
New bins will start to be delivered to about
82,000 houses and small apartment blocks
from late July, which means residents may
have an additional red lid bin before FOGO
officially starts in November.
These households are encouraged to
continue putting their existing red lid bin out
for collection each week.
FOGO rollout for large apartment blocks
greater than 30 units will follow later.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber
said this is an opportunity for the community
to take practical action that reduces landfill.
“We’ve worked hard to shape a service that
will meet the NSW Government’s mandate
The new waste collection service will help
divert 85 per cent of the city’s landfill waste
by 2038, according to Council.
for all councils to implement FOGO services
by 2030 and the demand from our residents
for food waste recycling,” Esber said.
“When we undertook community consultation
in 2022, our residents told us they were
happy to contribute to reducing the harmful
impact of methane on our environment, but
they were worried about managing waste
and stinky bins.
“That’s why our red lid bins will be collected
weekly and residents who need more space
can still opt for a larger red lid bin for an
additional cost.”
Council’s Feed it to FOGO campaign will
help residents learn more about the service
and how to FOGO. The campaign includes
videos, social media content and pamphlets
in English, Simplified Chinese, Hindi,
Korean and Arabic on Council’s website.
Big changes to M4 servos
Your questions answered: What’s going on with food, service stations on motorway?
TROY DODDS
If you’ve driven past the M4 service
centres at Eastern Creek lately, you’ve
probably noticed some big changes.
McDonald’s – which has been on both sides
of the motorway since the 1990s – has closed
both its locations. Oporto and Red Rooster
have also closed in recent weeks.
The restaurants are now abandoned ahead
of a complete redevelopment of the site,
owned by Ampol. The service stations remain
open.
“We are redeveloping our eastbound and
westbound sites at Eastern Creek as part of
Ampol’s highway redevelopment strategy,”
an Ampol spokesperson confirmed to the
Weekender last week.
“Throughout the entire construction,
Ampol will continue to serve customers with
a fuel and convenience offering at the Ampol
Foodary – this includes hot food, fresh sandwiches,
snacks, coffee, and the largest range
of cold drinks and flavoured milk.”
The redeveloped sites will include a large
food court area with both indoor and outdoor
dining areas, children’s play areas, truck
driver amenities, separated fuel and diesel
canopies, and enclosed off-leash dog parks on
both sides of the highway.
While not yet confirmed, the Weekender
understands Hungry Jacks will form part of
After some 30 years in operation, McDonald’s on the M4 Motorway has now closed. Photo: Melinda Jane.
the new food offerings and McDonald’s will
not return.
“From late 2025, the sites on both sides of the
highway will bring Quick Service Restaurant
(QSR) offerings together under one roof with
Ampol Foodary’s fresh convenience offer to
help meet the needs of commuters and local
customers on both sides of the highway,” the
spokesperson said.
EV drivers will have new ultra-fast EV charging
bays on each side of the highway. At each
site, there will be first-of-a-kind AmpCharge
electric vehicle charging hubs for large vehicles
including trucks and cars with trailers,
and bays to serve all other passenger vehicles.
“Eastern Creek will be one of our biggest
truck-friendly sites with nine pumps available
at each of our two brand new diesel canopies
as well as ample parking and truck driver
facilities including showers and a dedicated
lounge room,” the spokesperson said.
Making us happy this week: The sight of an elderly couple in their 80s sharing an
LOCAL NEWS
Why Councillors left
meeting en masse
ELLIE BUSBY
Parramatta Councillors have
been branded as “extremely
out of touch” by one of their
own, after majority of the local
representatives left the Chamber
over a motion to advocate for the end
of no-grounds evictions.
At the latest City of Parramatta
Council meeting, the local Councillors
were set to discuss a motion
calling on the State Government to
fulfil its election promise and end
no-ground evictions in NSW.
Instead, nine out of 14 of the local
representatives said they had a
conflict of interest in the matter and
walked out of the Chamber – resulting
in a loss of quorum and the motion
having to be dropped.
Eight of them declared it was
because they were landlords themselves.
Independent Councillor Kellie
Darley, who is a renter and is currently
in the process of finding somewhere
new to live after being evicted herself,
put forward the motion.
Speaking to Parra News, Darley
said she was left “absolutely flabbergasted”
over the decision by a
majority of Councillors not to discuss
the motion.
“Given that almost half of our residents
rent, for the majority of Councillors
to turn their backs on those
residents and to not even discuss or
hear one of their major concerns is
really disappointing,” she said.
“Right now, I can’t say how any of
those Councillors as landlords would
benefit or not from that discussion,
except to actually hear the voices of
half our population in Parramatta.”
According to the 2021 Census data,
45.8 per cent of Parramatta residents
rent, with the weekly rent averaging
$450.
Darley stated that out of the 14
Councillors currently on Parramatta
Council, only two – including herself
– are renters.
She said this means the Council
doesn’t accurately reflect the city it’s
meant to represent.
“For me, I have the lived experience,
so clearly the majority of Councillors
are landlords and I then question
whether they have ever had the lived
experience of being evicted,” she
added.
“I think it reflects that they’re out of
touch, I was hoping that through the
discussion they could learn something,
they could hear what it’s like
for people renting.
“Them walking out and not even
listening, not even having the discussion,
to me just spoke volumes and it
was very disappointing.”
Noting that ending no-ground
evictions is in the hands of the State
Government, Darely said her motion
simply intended to help ease the
stress caused by evictions by making
it easier for residents to book a Council
clean-up – which can currently
take up to four weeks to book in.
“All I was looking actually for
Council to do was to reduce the
burden of residents who are
evicted with only 30 days’ notice
by making it easier to book a
Council clean-up,” she added.
“You’ve got the cost of getting
the removalists, finding somewhere
else to live, you’ve got
to move your kids potentially
out of school, so if we can just
make it that little bit easier by
only requiring residents need
seven days’ notice to book a
Council clean-up, I think that
just goes some way to reducing
that burden.”
She intends to bring a re-worked
motion back to Council.
Councillor Kellie Darley wants the State Government to come through on
its election promise.
Preparing for tourist boom
New airport in western Sydney will deliver millions of new visitors to region
EMILY CHATE
The heavy rain outside failed to
dampen the spirits of those who
gathered at the Lights On Western
Sydney forum earlier this month, designed to
prepare western Sydney business operators
for an increase of tourists in the region in the
coming years.
The forum shone a light on the visitor economy
strategy and showcased a series of industry
leaders as they discussed the injection of
tourism the opening of the Western Sydney
International Airport (WSIA) will bring in
2026.
The event was organised and hosted by
Penrith Valley Chamber in association with
Blue Mountains Tourism.
Penrith Valley Chamber President Richard
Fox opened the proceedings with a statement
that was echoed throughout the event.
“The visitor economy is everybody’s business
and we need everyone working together
so we all benefit from the opportunities when
the planes land at the new airport,” Fox said.
Penrith Mayor Todd Carney shared that
Penrith annually attracted 1.64 million visitors
but was hoping to grow this number to
2.74 million by 2030.
“The opening of the Western Sydney International
Airport is a game changer,” Carney
said.
Peter Regan, CEO of Sydney Metro.
Photo: David Hill, Deep Hill Media.
The event provided key updates on the
construction of the WSIA and the complementing
transport infrastructure, the Metro.
WSIA CEO Simon Hickey confirmed the
airport is predicted to promote the western
Sydney region as a tourism destination.
“We need to connect the west to the west and
the west to the rest,” Hickey said.
WSIA is predicted to service 10 million
annual passengers in its first year of operation
and 82 million passengers at full operation.
Sydney Metro Chief Executive Peter Regan
shared the construction of the St Marys to
Jacqui Vozzo, Board Director Western
Sydney Lakes.
Photo: David Hill, Deep Hill Media.
Aerotropolis line is on schedule and will be
prepared to service the influx of visitors.
“A train [will run] every five minutes in peak
hour, and every 10 minutes in off peak,” Regan
said.
A series of attractions are intended to entertain
those living in or visiting the area.
Western Sydney Lakes Board Director Jacqui
Vozzo said that major works are in the plans to
enhance the Penrith Beach area.
“We want to create a public location that is
locally loved and globally recognised,” Vozzo
said.
Peter Magnisalis, CEO Winter Sports World.
Plans for an indoor snow resort, Winter
Sports World, were presented in detail and
Sydney Zoo, Scenic World and West HQ were
highlighted as places set to provide entertainment
to visitors.
Sport is another avenue of tourism for the
west with the Panthers alone bringing in
200,000 visitors, and Panthers CEO Brian
Fletcher confirming rugby league is important
for the visitor economy.
The next Lights On event will be held in
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
When it comes to home and family –
expect the unexpected! Courtesy of the
weekend Jupiter/Uranus conjunction,
there’ll be exciting changes and/or
domestic dramas involving loved ones
and/or living arrangements in 2024.
You’ll feel the need to re-design, decorate,
renovate, extend or even move house,
and your family could be expanded
in surprising ways. With Mercury still
retro, there could also be a big shake-up
in your local community.
With Uranus and Jupiter connecting
in your education and communication
zone, you could find yourself writing,
studying, teaching, publishing or
podcasting, as you extend your social
media reach to a larger national and
international audience. Travel and
adventure are also on the horizon, as
you choose more exotic and adventurous
places to visit. But be extra careful with
financial matters, as Mercury reverses
through your money zone until April 25.
Remember Mercury is still reversing
through your sign (until April 25) so
pace yourself. On the weekend, lucky
Jupiter and inventive Uranus join forces
in your cash zone. So – when it comes
to money matters – being adventurous
and innovative could pay off. As long as
you are not ridiculously rash. Getting
professional financial advice is also a
priority. Your mantra for the week is from
birthday great, writer Charlotte Bronte,
“Look twice before you leap.”
On the weekend (for the first time since
1941) Jupiter and Uranus hook up in
your sign, so it’s time for Bulls to be bold,
brave and adventurous. Which will give
you the confidence and courage to be the
authentic you, showcase your strengths,
and pursue your wildest dreams. Your
motto for the moment is from birthday
great, actress and activist Emma Watson,
“I don’t want other people to decide who
I am. I want to decide that for myself.”
Mercury is still in retro mode until April
25 so make sure you back-up computer
files, allow plenty of time to get to
appointments and catch flights, doublecheck
everything and are incredibly
adaptable. And Jupiter joins Uranus in
your self-reflection zone, so it is a good
week to take up yoga, meditation, Tai Chi
or some sort of metaphysical study. Jupiter
broadens your spiritual perspective
and Uranus boosts your desire to explore
exciting new realms.
Double-check everything at work, as
Mercury reverses through your career
zone. Then, on the weekend, Jupiter
and Uranus hook up in your hopes and
wishes zone. So it’s time for proactive
Crabs to dream big dreams and then take
adventurous steps to make them come
true. No side-stepping! Your message for
the moment is from Victoria Beckham
(who turns 50 on Wednesday), “If you
can get your head around your dream, it
means your dream isn’t big enough.”
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
On the weekend, lucky Jupiter and
Uranus link up in your career and life
direction zone. So a combination of
self-belief and sudden opportunities
could set you on an exciting new
professional path. Volunteer work and
networking are also favoured. Inspiration
for the week comes from birthday
great, fashion designer Victoria Beckham,
“I think the sexiest thing about a
woman is confidence, but confidence in
a humble way, not in an arrogant way.”
Mercury is in retrograde mode, so
it’s not the best time to buy a phone,
computer or car. But it is a good week to
do just about anything with an RE in front
of it – revise, rehearse, reboot, research,
revisit, retract, refund, rethink, reschedule,
re-do. On the weekend, Jupiter and
Uranus activate your adventure zone so
travel, holidays and/or business trips are
favoured after Mercury turns direct on
April 25. By then, you’ll be itching to put
on your travelling shoes!
Look out – Lady Luck is headed in your
direction! With prosperity planet Jupiter
and surprise planet Uranus linking
up in your ‘money-from-others’ zone,
many Librans will benefit from a gift,
inheritance, loan, divorce settlement,
insurance claim, tax return or superannuation
pay-out. So make sure you
spend any windfall wisely. With Mercury
still reversing through your relationship
zone, tread gingerly with loved ones. The
buzz word for the week is ‘diplomacy’.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
With Mercury reversing through your
health zone, is it time for a medical or
dental check-up? Or perhaps you need to
revise and reboot your exercise routine?
On the weekend, Jupiter and Uranus join
forces in your partnership zone. So try
to view a troubled relationship from a
different angle; from a more philosophical
perspective. And are you looking
for love? In 2024 you could be attracted
to someone from another country or
culture.
Mercury is still in retrograde mode
(until April 25) so slow down and be
careful what you say – especially to
children and friends. On the weekend,
Uranus and Jupiter (your patron planet)
join forces in your job zone. So – when it
comes to your career trajectory – sudden
opportunity meets self-belief. If you’ve
put in the preparation, then you’ll have
the confidence to reap the rewards when
Lady Luck comes along. Work and travel
are also a likely mix.
On the weekend, jolly Jupiter and
exciting Uranus link up in your love,
romance, children and friendship zone.
So your close relationships will bring
much happiness and unexpected opportunities
over the coming year. However
– with Mercury still reversing through
your family zone until April 25 – there’ll
be a few domestic dramas before you get
there. As always, a cool Capricorn head,
patience and perseverance are your
secret weapons!
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
Celebrity beauty lines: Which ones
live up to the hype and expectation?
Influencers and celebrities
have never been strangers to
the retail space. First, it was
just clothing and merchandise,
then perfumes, and now, it
feels as though everyone has
their own makeup line.
Whether they’re passionate
about the industry or not, starting
a brand like this would be
a no-brainer for anyone with a
cult following.
But, it’s this passion that
sets celebrity brands apart
from one another – which will
constantly live in the shadows
of its owner and be diminished
as such, and which will rise
above, becoming better known
for its quality than the name
behind it?
Rare Beauty
Founded in 2019, Rare Beauty
is a cosmetics line by Selena
Gomez, inspired by her third
studio album, ‘Rare’.
The brand is advertised as
being ‘makeup made to feel
good in’ and I think it does just
that, with inclusive, accessible
products.
Rare Beauty has become
incredibly well regarded in the
makeup space independently
and as a result of Gomez’s
involvement. My personal
favourite product is the Soft
Pinch Liquid Blush, particularly
in the shades ‘Bliss’ and
‘Joy’.
Fenty Beauty
Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty blew
up as soon as it launched back
in 2017 thanks to their clear
commitment to inclusivity,
displayed in the initial shade
range of the Pro Filt'R foundation.
Since then, the brand has
gone from strength to strength,
coming out with a host of
iconic products. Some of my
favourites include the Pro
Filt'r Instant Retouch Setting
Powder, Diamond Bomb
All-Over Diamond Veil in ‘How
Many Carats?!’, and Pro Kiss'r
Luscious Lip Balm.
One/Size
One/Size was launched by
influencer Patrick Starrr back
in 2020. Coming after a slew of
influencer brands and collaborations,
I think there was good
reason to question the quality
of what was coming. However,
it’s since grown to be one of my
favourites.
One/Size feels incredibly
true to both Starrr’s look and
his ethos, in that it makes his
makeup style accessible to
everyone. Some stand outs for
me include the On ‘Til Dawn
Setting Spray, Made For Shade
Bronze & Sculpt Trio Palette,
and the BrowKiki Clear Nourishing
Brow Gel.
Flower Beauty
Available exclusively at
Chemist Warehouse in
Australia, Flower Beauty was
founded by actress and talk
show host Drew Barrymore
in 2013. What sets this brand
apart is its affordability, positioning
itself among brands
like Maybelline and Revlon, as
opposed to those at Sephora.
Though I’ve yet to try
anything from this line,
reviews are incredibly positive,
and I think its popularity
speaks for itself.
R.E.M. Beauty
R.E.M. Beauty is a brand
founded by Ariana Grade in
2021, named after her song
‘R.E.M’.
The brand’s aesthetic is very
dreamy and space-inspired,
and since its launch, Grande
has been very involved in
creating and promoting the
products.
Although it’s not currently
available in-store in Australia,
fans have been able to enjoy her
incredibly popular perfumes
in the meantime – my favourite
being Ari by Ariana Grande.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
NOLL TURNS BACK
THE CLOCK
CASSIDY PEARCE
Though it might feel as though
it was just yesterday that we all
watched Shannon Noll be announced
as the runner up on
‘Australian Idol’, the singer has
now marked 20 years since the release of
his multi-platinum debut album ‘That’s
What I’m Talkin’ About’, and is celebrating
with an anniversary album release and national
tour.
For Noll, looking back on his decades-long
career filled with music, live
shows, and appearances on series’ like ‘I’m
a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!’ and ‘The
Masked Singer Australia’ has been momentous
in itself.
“It’s amazing, really. It’s been mind-blowing,
and it’s gone by so quick,” he said.
“I’m just so thankful to still be going
around after 20 years, and to be able to
rerelease ‘That’s What I’m Talkin’ About’
through Sony and celebrate the songs off it
as well.”
As part of the celebrations, Noll released
‘That’s What I’m Talking About (20th Anniversary
Collectors Edition)’ last Friday,
complete with all the hits from the original
album, some of his most well-known live
performances from 2004, and a few new
songs as well.
“I’m putting out a new single called ‘No
Time’ which Garry Frost wrote, so that’s 20
years in between, because he wrote ‘What
About Me’ as well,” he told the Weekender
prior to the album’s release.
“I’ve also done a duet with Cosima [De
Vito], which is really exciting. Cosima and
I haven’t worked together since ‘Idol’ 20
years ago, so I decided to see if she’d be
interested in doing a song together, and
we ended up doing a duet together that
Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson did in the
States, so I’m really excited about that one
as well. Cosima really nailed it!”
But, no career anniversary would be complete
without a tour.
After kicking it off just last week on the
Sunshine Coast, Noll will be making his
way to Sydney Coliseum Theatre next
month, and he couldn’t be more excited.
“I think it will be one of the stand-out
venues for the whole tour. I really championed
a bit to get that one!” he said.
As for the setlist, Noll promises that plenty
of his old hits will get a run, as well as
some of the new stuff.
“We’ll be doing a few songs off the album
for a start, like ‘New Beginning’, ‘Burn’ and
‘Prove,” he said.
“Then, we’ll be doing a bit of an acoustic
set through the middle, before bringing
it home with a full band and the hits like
‘Shine’ that were off the following album.”
Noting that his performance style has
changed a fair bit over the years, he said
he’s planning to go ‘old school’ for this
show, staying true to the style of his older
music.
“I think we’ve probably gotten a little bit
rockier at a live show than we were originally
over the years, but we’re conscious
that the first album’s a quite poppy album,
so we’ll be making sure that that’s the flavour
of those songs in the initial part
of the show,” he said.
Stating that doing the tour
would be nostalgic to stay the
least, having not played
a number of the songs
since the album was
first released, Noll
said he can’t wait
for the memories
of his early
touring years
to come flooding
back with
the people who
have supported
him since day
dot, and his
new fans as
well.
“It’s a memory
filled
show. It’s going
to be a real journey
with a bit of
storytelling and a
bit of conversation
as well,” he said.
“It’s a bit of a trip
down memory lane, and
a celebration of the music
journey itself.”
Shannon Noll will
be on at Sydney Coliseum
Theatre on
Saturday, May 18 at
7.30pm. Tickets start
at $79.65.
COUNTRY
CORNER
The CMT Music Awards
were held in Texas last
Monday morning Australian
time. Here’s our take-outs...
Jelly Roll dominated
It was a huge night for Jelly
Roll (pictured below), whose
star in country music only
continues to grow.
He took home the night’s
biggest award – Video of the
Year – as well as Male Video
of the Year, making him the
first person to win the category
in back-to-back years
since Blake Shelton some 10
years ago.
He also won CMT Performance
of the Year.
“One year ago, I was
invited to perform at my first
awards show, and I walked
on this stage, and I sang
‘Need A Favor’ on national
television for the first time
right here. What I am
emotional about is that
in the last year, you
have changed my
life in every
way I would
have never
thought my
life could be
changed,” he
said in one of
his three acceptance
speeches.
Sugarland returns
There was a huge moment
when Little Big Town and
Sugarland performed ‘Take
Me Home’ at the awards,
marking Sugarland’s longawaited
return to the stage.
And it became even bigger
when it was announced that
the two groups would tour
together in the United States
later this year.
An honour for Trisha
The legendary Trisha
Yearwood received the
inaugural June Carter Cash
Humanitarian Award.
“I only hope I can be as big
a part of my community as
she was,” Yearwood said of
Cash.
“My hope is that we can
all learn a little from June
Carter Cash’s legacy, be
a little more real, a little
more vulnerable, a little
less about me, and a
little more about us.”
Lainey is just
Lainey
Is there
anyone better
in country at
the moment than
Lainey Wilson?
Fresh from her
Australian tour,
she brought the house down
with an epic rendition of
‘Country’s Cool Again’, and
took home the Female Video
of the Year for ‘Watermelon
Moonshine’.
Kelsea calls it quits
Kelsea Ballerini (pictured)
had a tonne of outfit changes
and did an awesome job
hosting the awards solo.
But she stunned the crowd
when she announced it
would be her last year hosting
the CMT Music Awards.
Meantime, she performed
an updated, more adult
version of her breakthrough
hit ‘Love Me Like You Mean
It’, which celebrates its 10th
anniversary this year. The
new version is also out now
on Spotify.
REVIEW
The First Omen

2 hours, 0 minutes
Decidedly creepy and unsettling, ‘The First
Omen’ pairs good ol’ fashioned religious
horror with the trauma of childbirth in this
prequel to the ‘70s classic.
Set in 1971 – five years before Damien was
first introduced in ‘The Omen’ – the film follows
Nell Tiger Free who plays Margaret Daino,
a young American woman who is sent
to work in an orphanage in Rome ahead of
starting a life of service to the church.
It’s there that she meets young Carlita Skianna,
played by Nicole Sorace, who is ostracised
from the other girls at the orphanage
and locked up in the “bad room”.
Cue the creepy drawings, ominous whispers
and ghostly “hallucinations,” as Margaret
uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that
hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.
Right from the opening scene, there are
plenty of callbacks to the original ‘The
Omen’ (The Gregory Peck one, not the 2006
remake that no one talks about), yet it still
manages to stand on its own feet as an entertaining
horror film.
There’s also plenty of body horror throughout
– but it’s not glorified.
It’s filmed through a female lens – focusing
on the loss of bodily autonomy and the
feelings of hopelessness that come with it,
instead of being graphic just for the sake of
shock value.
Although there a few good jump scares, it’s
these moments where characters are tied
down and forced to endure horrific pain that
really brings the fear.
There is one spine-tingling scene in particular
that is bound to start plenty of conversation
and stay on your mind long after
the credits roll. It also may put you off having
kids.
Then there’s a scene where nuns jump on a
trampoline, so there’s that.
Ultimately, being a prequel will always limit
just how much freedom a movie has when
it comes to storytelling, but ‘The First Omen’
does well with what it has.
Credit where credit’s due, Tiger Free gives
an extraordinary performance, delivering
plenty of terror as her character gets put
through the wringer.
All in all, ‘The First Omen’ is an uncomfortable,
hair-raising horror that puts women in
the spotlight.
A word of caution to those expecting: you
may want to hold off on watching this one
until well after labour.
Or until you’re certain you didn’t just give
birth to the anti-christ.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
Giant slice of fate
How GWS star Kieren Briggs’ AFL career almost never was
NATHAN TAYLOR
He’s an integral part of a Giants team
that’s had a strong start to the new
AFL season, but if it wasn’t for one
of his mates growing up, Kieren Briggs’ life
would be a lot different right now.
Like any child living in western Sydney,
Briggs played numerous sports at school like
soccer, rugby league and athletics, but it’s the
story of how he stumbled upon Aussie Rules
that’s really quite astonishing.
“I was staying at a friend’s place, having a
sleepover one weekend, and his dad was from
Melbourne and had an AFL background. My
friend was playing junior footy at Pennant
Hills and they needed someone to fill in one
Sunday morning,” Briggs told Parra News.
“I enjoyed it so much that I ended up playing
the rest of the season after filling in that one
weekend. Everything just took off from there.”
After taking to his new sport like a duck
to water, Briggs would quickly rise the
ranks and, before he knew it, was being
drafted by GWS with 34th pick in the 2018 AFL
Draft.
“I made the U12’s side for school and found
the Giants Academy when I was 13-years-old,”
Briggs said.
“I was only a kilometre outside of being in
the Swans Academy zone. Pennant Hills was
technically Sydney Swans territory but my
GWS Giants players, including Kieren Briggs, visited junior AFL clubs last month.
parents growing up in Carlingford happened
to sneak into the Giants Academy zone and
I’m pretty happy I was on that side now.”
Since making his AFL debut in 2021, the
24-year-old is now considered one of the best
young ruckmen in the game.
Given an opportunity in Round 10 last
season, Briggs went on to play the final 17
games to play a huge role in helping the Giants
make a Preliminary Final.
Briggs finished the 2023 season leading all
ruckmen across the competition for clearances
per game while ranking third in tackles
and sixth for possessions.
Not bad for a kid who wasn’t supposed to be
playing the sport if it weren’t for a bit of fate.
After his own unlikely entry into the sport,
Briggs is now determined to help unearth the
next wave of western Sydney talent.
During the Giants’ bye week last month,
Briggs and his teammates visited numerous
junior AFL clubs around western Sydney to
Kieren Briggs signing a young fan’s Croc.
inspire the youth of today – preaching that
‘anything is possible’.
Briggs says he remembers current Gold
Coast Suns captain Jarrod Witts visiting his
junior club when he was younger.
“From memory, I had Jarrod Witts come out
when he was at Collingwood because I was
playing with his younger brother Lleyton at
the time,” Briggs said.
“It was cool to see him come out and then a
full circle moment happened because I play
against him these days.
“The calibre of kids coming through since
doing these club visits has been getting better
and better each year. We’re hoping to develop
more AFL players in the future that come from
western Sydney.”
Eels grab crucial points
Gritty Parramatta hold on to upset North Queensland in front of 14,000 fans
TROY DODDS
Parramatta head to Darwin this week in
a bouyant mood after upsetting North
Queensland 27-20 at CommBank
Stadium last weekend.
It was an important win for the Eels as they
battle a period without halfback Mitchell
Moses. Brad Arthur’s side now sits just a
point outside the top eight.
“I thought we were pretty courageous,”
Arthur said post-match.
“It just showed that the boys do care. It’s
hard to be at our best every week but the
effort was there and there was real desire and
real want.”
Both sides scored four tries in the encounter
but it was the goal kicking of Clint Gutherson
that made all the difference.
A Daejarn Asi field goal in the dying
minutes confirmed the win.
“Defence has been a big issue for us over the
last couple of weeks but we scrambled really
well,” Arthur said.
“Overall with the amount of footy they
threw at us, I think we did a really good job.”
The Eels hit the road this week for their
annual clash at TIO Stadium in Darwin.
They’re short-priced favourites to beat the
Dolphins, who sit in fifth place on the ladder.
The match kicks off at 8.00pm on Friday
and is live on Nine and Fox League.
