WELCOME
PARENTS, GUESTS, AND MUSIC EDUCATORS
On behalf of the TMEA Board of Directors and the Conference Planning
Committee, it is our pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the 2024
Tennessee Music Education Association All-State Ensembles concerts.
Over the past three days, these exceptional students have immersed
themselves in rehearsals with nationally renowned conductors to present
intricate and challenging music that spans various genres, composers,
and styles. The students showcased in these concerts did not commence
their All-State journey merely this week. Many began preparing for
auditions back in August of 2023 for their regional association honors
ensembles. Through their dedication, perseverance, and undeniable talent, these students emerged
triumphant, having been selected from thousands of their peers to grace the stage in these All-State
concerts. Their commitment to excellence has been honed through years of rigorous practice and
dedication to their musical pursuits. It’s noteworthy that these students excel not only in music but
also academically, athletically, and as leaders within their schools.
Undoubtedly, these students have reached this high honor through the guidance of their
exceptional directors and music teachers, coupled with unwavering support from their families
and friends. To the families of these students, we extend our sincerest appreciation for your
encouragement of your child’s musical journey. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the numerous
music teachers who have nurtured and invested in these students from elementary through high
school. The impact you’ve had and will continue to have on their lives is immeasurable. We also
express gratitude to school administrators who create supportive environments and provide
essential resources, valuing the significance of music in our schools.
To the 2024 Tennessee Music Education Association All-State Ensemble Members:
Congratulations on achieving the distinction of an All-State musician. This All-State experience is
bound to reside in your memory for the rest of your lives, and as you reflect on this journey, may you
fondly remember the friendships made and the advanced musical knowledge and skills acquired.
Following your All-State concert, carry with you the remarkable aesthetic experience derived from an
outstanding performance with peers representing music programs from across the state.
Remember to express sincere appreciation to your family members, friends, and directors who have
played pivotal roles in helping you achieve this musical accomplishment. Congratulations once again,
All-State musicians, on your current and future successes.
Marques L. A. Garrett, Conductor
A Virginia native, Marques L. A. Garrett (he/him) is Associate Professor of Choral Studies at
the University of North Texas. His responsibilities include conducting the University Singers and
teaching graduate and undergraduate choral conducting. His previous appointments were at the
University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Cheyney University. Additionally, he holds a Ph.D. in Music
Education (Choral Conducting) from Florida State University, an M.M. from the University of
North Carolina at Greensboro, and a B.A. from Hampton University.
An active conductor, Dr. Garrett is the founding conductor of the Nebraska Festival Singers
and previously served as artistic director of the Omaha Symphonic Chorus. He serves as a guest
conductor or clinician with school, church, and community choirs throughout the country in
addition to festival and honor choirs in Georgia, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana,
Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. His most
recent engagements were with the NAfME All-Northwest and Connecticut All-State Mixed Choirs.
Dr. Garrett is an avid composer of choral and solo-vocal music whose compositions have been performed to acclaim by high school
all-state, collegiate, and professional choirs. He has been commissioned by the Cincinnati Youth Choir, Concordia Choir, Harvard
University, Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia, and Westminster Choir College. Among his latest commissions is his largest work to
date, Dreamland: Tulsa 1921. This collaborative work with librettist Sandra Seaton for tenor-bass chorus, soloists, and chamber orchestra
was commissioned by the Turtle Creek Chorale to tell the story of the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
As a researcher, his most advantageous topic is the non-idiomatic choral music of Black composers. His lectures at state and regional
conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and at other local and national venues afford him the opportunity to
showcase this underrepresented area of music resulting in the anthology The Oxford Book of Choral Music by Black Composers released
in February 2023. His peer-reviewed presentations and headlining events for conferences and organizations have been in Alabama,
Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Kansas, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Canada. He
serves as co-editor of the “Out from the Shadows” Series with Gentry Publications. For more information, visit www.mlagmusic.com.
State Choir accompanist in 2011, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, and this year. In 2021 and 2022, Lisa was the accompanist for the National
TENNESSEE ALL-STATE MODERN BAND
Steven Potaczek, Director | Michael Parsons, Ensemble Coordinator
Presenting Sponsor: Gastro One
Steven Potaczek, Director
Steven Potaczek helps musical artists and students discover and express their potential as creative
careerists. As a music producer, he has worked with some of the top names in the industry (The
Band Perry, Josh Garrels, and Jon McLaughlin to name a few), and has successfully partnered
with organizations such as MTV, National Geographic, and the Heartland Film Festival. He has
received numerous industry accolades (including the Gospel Music Academy’s “Song of the Year”
award and the John Lennon Songwriting Award), toured nationally as a major label artist with a
Billboard Top 40 hit, and landed musical placements on several prominent television shows such as
Parks and Rec, New Girl, and CBS Evening News.
As an educator, Professor Potaczek has taught at the collegiate level for over a decade and is a
regular speaker at many music and film conferences and festivals. He holds a Master of Science
in Music Technology from Indiana University and is the Founding Director of the Commercial
Music program at Samford University. This innovative degree is one of the fastest growing programs in the School of the Arts and
offers concentrations in the areas of songwriting, music production, live touring and performance, and music industry.
Perhaps most importantly, Steven absolutely loves inspiring and educating the next generation of music artists and industry leaders.
Selected students participated in a clinic and performance on
March 21-23, 2024, at Battle Ground Academy (Franklin, Tennessee).
