The Courage of Children: Boston and Beyond XXXIII
T. JAVZANDULAM T. TERGEL, TEACHER 79th School, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia Courage, in my view, is the steadfast belief that, regardless of the present judgments others may cast upon you, your potential and future remain vast and promising. Today’s criticisms may weigh heavy, but they do not dictate who you will become in the eyes of tomorrow. Our destinies lie firmly within our grasp, and recognizing this truth epitomizes true bravery. During my elementary school years, I endured relentless mockery directed at both my appearance and name. The relentless taunting became so unbearable that I dreaded each school day. My family, deeply concerned for my wellbeing, sought to engage me in conversation as much as possible, but I withdrew into profound solitude. Days passed, and I found myself enveloped in the depths of loneliness, unable to shake the fear that consumed me. “ARMED WITH NEWFOUND MOTIVATION AND SELF-ASSURANCE, I CONFRONTED LIFE’S CHALLENGES WITH RENEWED VIGOR AND DETERMINATION.” Despite my family’s unwavering support and encouragement, my fear persisted. The faces of the scornful children, their mocking voices, and the hurtful words they hurled at me haunted my every thought. Participating in the MAXCourage program and reading the essays of many children around the world made me even more courageous, knowing that there are many children like me all over the world who are suffering more than me. Also, receiving psychological counseling and meetings with the teachers of the program changed me a lot. I became more self-confident and courageous. Furthermore, the guidance and counseling sessions provided by the program’s teachers facilitated a significant transformation within me. I emerged from these sessions with heightened self-assurance and resilience. I learned to deflect the barbs of ridicule and disregard the hurtful comments aimed at me. Armed with newfound motivation and self-assurance, I confronted life’s challenges with renewed vigor and determination. In conclusion, I urge you not to be swayed by the opinions of others. True courage lies in unwaveringly pursuing your goals and embracing yourself as you are. To those who may read this essay, I extend my sincerest wishes for success and fulfillment on your own journey of courage. THE COURAGE OF CHILDREN: BOSTON AND BEYOND VOLUME XXXIII 152 153
