THE SPIRIT

OF IBADAH

It is very important to understand

the Spirit of Ibadah (worship),

otherwise there is no difference

between us and those who

misconstrued former Divine

Teachings. They made a show of

their rituals, and forgot its spirit.

Ibadah in Islam does not mean

t h e o b s e r v a n c e o f Pr a y e r,

Fasting, Charity and Pilgrimage

in their physical forms only.

Taqwah, which means being

conscious of the Almighty, must be

uppermost in our minds.

Islamic Beliefs and rituals serve

specic objects, and are performed

in order to keep us clean and

healthy; to restrain us from doing

wrong, or from hurting Allah’s

creatures; and most important of

all - doing the positive - helping

our fellow-men.

For example, Salaah requires us

to be clean, and make us conscious

o f A l l a h’ s p r e s e n c e , t h u s

preventing us from going on the

wrong path.

Charity cannot serve its true

purpose of bringing about social

justice, if the giver is uncharitable

in spirit, if he exploits, underpays

workers or shows off his Charity.

Or Fasting will mean starvation if

it is not accompanied by a sense of

sacrice, and a feeling for the

suffering of others.

Or going on Pilgrimage is merely

a tour if one returns without

experiencing piety, learning

tolerance, observing humility,

knowing brotherhood, unity and

equality.

Of what use is the shell of an egg

when its nourishing contents are

drained out? Likewise, of what use

is the show of worship if we

cannot display our love for Allah,

effectively?

The Holy Prophet explains: “The

most virtuous by Allah is he who is

most benecial to mankind.”

Virtue is the yard-stick by which

Allah will judge us.

by being part of their growth and development. It allows those that are

orphaned and those without any close relatives to have an opportunity to

WHEN YOUR CHILD IS A BULLY

“I've heard that my child has been bullying other

children. I’m so angry, I’d like to tear him limb from

limb.”

What do you do when you nd out your child has been a

bully? Parents’ reactions are often quite extreme. They

might feel rage and shame - how could their child be so

stupid and mean? - or go into total denial - he isn’t

capable of such behaviour. Usually the truth lies

somewhere in the middle. Your child is both guilty and

innocent. There’s every chance your child did do

something appalling, but there are almost always

extenuating circumstances. Though there may be no

excuse for what he has done, you may come to

understand why it happened. Some parents simply can’t

accept that their child has ever played a part in any

problem. If you are convinced your child is completely

squeaky clean, think again. It is a myth that bullies are

always big tough kids from difcult families. Children

bully for all sorts of reasons. Every one of us has a good

side and a bad side, and every one of us makes mistakes.

Unless you recognize this in your own child, you won’t be

able to help them, and you can unintentionally put them

under pressure. They may also be so afraid of tarnishing

your image of them that they’ll do almost anything to

cover up the truth. Even when they need your moral

support and guidance, they’ll nd it hard to be honest.

It’s almost inevitable that your child will fall out with their

friends, get into ghts or hurt their feelings. Sometimes

they will be the one to blame or the one who has caused

the most damage. It is not pleasant when it happens, but

it does.

WEIGHT LOSS

Obesity causes many of our ills including diabetes,

strokes, poor sexual performance, and poor self-esteem.

Most of a healthy diet should consist from a wide variety

of vegetables and fruits. 2-3 times a week you should eat

beans. 5 days a week eat nuts (especially walnuts,

almonds). Eat mainly good sources of protein: poultry,

eggs, sh, beans. If you must eat red meat, get the

leanest you can nd. Eat it in small portions and no more

than once/twice a week or less. Mediterranean dieters

eat red meat once a month.

As it turns out, the canned sh are pretty healthy and

probably better than fresh as they are usually wildly

caught and freshly canned. In terms of mercury levels, a

canned sh like salmon probably contains less mercury

than fresh, because smaller-size sh, which carry less

mercury than larger ones, are more likely to end up in

cans. If you choose canned, sh canned in oil is more

likely than sh packed in water to retain more omega-3

fatty acids, considered good brain food, because the oil

helps keep the nutrients in the sh. Oil adds extra

calories, but if packing in oil means someone will eat sh

they wouldn't otherwise, it's worth it.

Fast food salad is a poor choice. Salad dressing is high in

salt and saturated fat. It's really a serving of salt with the

lettuce on the side. Lettuce is just water and has a low

nutritional value. However, other leafy greens are a

much better choice. Kale, chard, spinach, collards.

Spinach is great for your brain. Raw is better, but has to

be washed well. Carrots and tomatoes are better

consumed cooked to break the nutrients out of the cells.

Tomatoes are better cooked or heated with fat (olive oil).

Don't eat butter in large amounts and only use it for

cooking/taste sparingly. At least 2 times a week you

should eat sh. (Cold water sh as such, has Omega 3-

fats, which the sh uses to keep itself warm-For example,

salmon, tuna, sardines, herring). Omega 3 protects our

heart, stimulates our brain, and even improves our

mood. Unfortunately more than 2 servings per week is

not advisable as it contains mercury especially for

pregnant women.

I want to thank Vision Child &

Youth Care Centre for producing

t h i s w o n d e r f u l m a g a z i n e ,

presented to me by a neighbour. It

inspired me so much, I decided to

write to you informing how my

p a r e n t s m e t , a t o p i c t h a t

captivated my mind. At age 23, my

mom’s house sadly caught re, &

was destroyed in minutes. The

c a u s e , a f a u l t y g a s t a n k .

Alghamdulillah, no serious injuries

occured, but she was admitted to

hospital with severe smoke

inhalation. On arrival, she was met

by a group of student doctors, one

of which paid special attention to

her. She loved this, the attention

assisting her recovery. After being

discharged, she invited the doctor

to her newly built home. Today I

have perfect parents, happily

married with 2 boys & a girl. My

grandparents described my dad as

helpful, generous & kind. May

Allah grant our parents the best in

this world & the hereafter, Ameen.

MY SHOCKING EXPERIENCE

These days it is quite normal for a young lady to postpone

any nuptial plans until she has completed her studies

and secured a good job. So I did just that and at age 32 I

got married to an amazing young man, a year older than

me, 3 months after we met.Of course I love him and he is

well-liked by my family and friends. About 3 months into

our marriage, we were ready to start ‘trying for a baby.’ I

was not getting younger, neither was he, especially when

you have always dreamt of having a big family. It turned

out that the dreams we have, sometimes remain just

that. Dreams, hopes, wishes and duas, call it what you

want, life certainly cannot be seen as a plan, because it is

a journey with many detours and obstacles along the

way. Then, 3 years on, we were still trying and I was over

it. I was broken with 3 years of negative pregnancy tests

that resulted in tears. Three years of people giving you

advice on what to do, what to drink and eat, to lose

weight, or see this person, buy these pills... It never stops.

My husband changed in behaviour and attitude and I

really thought he was going to leave me for someone

else. The experience of trying to have a baby was

absolutely shocking. Then I realised that I am a

responsible adult. Age takes its toll, and along with that it

takes away strength, speed and vitality. Well, as we

progressed in life, we as husband and wife came to the

realization that we have each other, as we came to terms

with what Allah has decreed for us. My loving husband is

still the same. He is everything that I wanted him to be,

we appreciate each other regardless. We still and will

always keep on making dua that Allah in His innite

mercy will grant us our wishes, Insha-Allah Ameen.

THE FAMILY

Islam considers the family unit as the basis of its society.

The kind of relationship that should exist between man

and woman is beautifully described in the Holy Quran,

Surah Roem, verse 21:

“And amongst His signs is this that He created for you

mates from amongst yourselves so that you may live in

harmony with them, and He has put love and mercy

between you. Verily, in that are signs for those who

reect.”

According to Islam, relationships between men and

women are not entirely based on sex. Harmony, love and

mercy play important roles in founding a happy family.

Islamic Law has taken into account human nature and

has regulated the instinct of sex through marriage. Islam

views the abuse of the sexual urge outside the bounds of

marriage as rebellious, against the Divine Orders, for

such immoral behaviour unbalances and destroys

society.

Man and woman should nd peace and happiness with

one another. When fear and anxiety strike, they offer

security to one another and nd a haven of consolation.

WHO IS A

MURTAD?

The word Murtad is derived from Irtidaad, “to turn back”.

One who gives up Islam wilfully for another faith or

becomes a Mulhad (atheist) is classied as a Murtad

(apostate, renegade, traitor). This law does not apply to

one who has been compelled by force to change his

faith.

Islam does not permit force to bring anyone into its

religion. The Holy Quran declares: “Let there be no

compulsion in religion” (Surah Baqara, verse 256). Islam

places no restriction on anyone’s faith. “And say: ‘(This) is

the Truth from your Lord; so let him who wishes believe

and let him who wishes disbelieve...’” (Surah Al-Kahf,

verse 29). But any muslim who leaves his faith wilfully is

regarded as a traitor. He shall be declared a Murtad, a

renegade. He is not to be trusted by the community.

A Kaar is a non-believer, one who does not believe in

the Divine Laws of Islam. A Mushrik is a pagan, or one

who joins partners with Allah.

DUTY OF THE LEARNED

Upon hearing of a muslim having become a Murtad, the

Learned are expected to call on him, at least once every

day for three days, in order to induce him back into the

fold. Should this person agree to return, he will have to

follow the same procedure as would apply to a convert to

the faith; that is ‘rstly reject Kuf’r (disbelief) and then

pronounce his Shahadat (Testimony) in the presence of

witnesses’. A Murtad must also repay the obligatory

duties (Fara-id) he had missed. Once he returns to Islam,

muslims must no longer shun him.

QURANIC COMMAND

The attitude Islam adopts towards a Murtad is that if he

dies or is killed, muslims are not allowed to bath or bury

him in the cemetery or to offer prayers for him. This is

declared in the Holy Quran in Surah Taubat, verse 84:

“Nor do thou ever pray for any of them that dies in a state

of perverse rebellion.” Therefore, a muslim should not

fraternise or befriend a Murtad. (You are allowed to

befriend people of other faiths, but not those who are

Murtad).

Even marriage ties are affected. The wife or husband of a

Murtador a Mulhad does no require the grounds for

annulling marriage.

A Murtad, having committed Kuf’r, cannot inherit from a

muslim, nor a muslim from him. A directive of the Holy

Prophet (SAW) says, “The Kaar does not a inherit a

muslim’s wealth nor a muslim a Kaar’s.”

Blue, owned by Ayesha Adams.

Ayesha has been in the hair

industry for the past 23 years. After

doing her Masters in colour,

mentoring apprentices and after

years of dreaming of owning her

own hair salon, 8 years ago with

the mercy of Allah SWT, she rented

a chair for about a year. Her vision

was also to educate and give other

hairstylists the opportunity to work

in an amazing environment. Again

with the qudrat of the Almighty

and with various requests from her

existing clients, Ayesha managed

to open her very own salon in

Wynberg and her clientele grew

exponentially! Unfortunately due

to Covid, which negatively affected

many businesses, Ayesha had to

close her luxury salon in Wynberg.

Serenity Blue re-opened in May

2023 in Crawford, and initially

business was slow. But business is

growing again and the advantage

to be shared is its hijabi-friendly

environment. A visit from our

consultant/marketing manager to

the home-based business reported

that if you are looking for an

experienced, skilled hand, then

popping in by Ayesha is highly

recommended. She is also a

lecturer, teaching her skills at I

Deserve It, an NPO based in

FASTING SIX DAYS

OF SHAWWAL

Hazrat Abu Ayub Ansari (RA) reports that Rasulullah

(S.A.W.) said, whoever fasts during the month of

Ramadaan and then fasts for six days during Shawaal,

gets the reward of fasting continuously. (Muslim)

This Hadith shows the great virtue of fasting after

Ramadaan, i.e. during the month of Shawaal. According

to Imam Shafi (R.A.) it is best to fast all six days

consecutively, immediately after Ramadaan. However

according to Imam Abu Hanifa (R.A.) it is better to fast the

six days separately.

The wisdom of fasting for six days after Ramadaan is that,

since the good deeds of a Muslim are multiplied by ten

fold, he receives the reward for fasting for 300 fasts by

fasting during the 30 days of Ramadaan.

Thereafter by fasting for six days during the month of

Shawaal, he will obtain the reward of a further 60 days:

so in total he will get the reward for fasting 360 days, it is

as though he spent his entire year fasting.

Alhamdulillah Allah Ta’ ala makes it so easy for His

servants to gain as much reward as possible.

O Lord, make me and my children of those who maintain

their prayers (Namaaz) and accept my prayer. Our Lord,

forgive me, my parents and all believers on the Day of

Reckoning.

O Allah, to You be all praise that is due to You as You

(SAW) according to your exalted position, and do You

unto us as is according to Your exalted position, for verily

You alone are worthy of being feared and You alone

grant pardon for sins.

source of coolness (delight) to our eyes and make us

leaders of God-fearing persons.

Our Lord, do not cause our hearts to waver after they

Thyself; verily Thou art the Giver.

O Lord, grant me that I may be grateful to Thee for the

favours which Thou bestowed on me and my parents and

that I may act in a manner which may earn Thine

pleasure and also reform my children; truly do I repent

before Thee and I am truly a muslim.

I seek Allah’s protection from that I should become one

of the ignorant people.

Our Lord, whoever is committed to the Hell by Thee

really stands condemned; there can be no helpers (there)

for the sinners.

But true happiness is in sharing our feelings with our

fellowmen; in seeing that their suffering is reduced; in

uplifting them to our own state of well-being, and higher.

For, how could we celebrate Eid-ul-tr in its true spirit, if

multitudes of people around us do not have the privilege

to enjoy the things we ourselves enjoy? Hence, we are

commanded to give charity (Fitrah) so that those in need

may be able to share our feelings of happiness and

celebrate the Festival. This is the spirit of Islamic

Brotherhood, the Spirit of Eid.

A person who has more than his needs for his or her use

for the day and night of Eid, is liable for Fitrah. It is Waajib

upon all such muslims - male or female - to give Fitrah.

Parents, family heads or custodians must give Fitrah on

behalf of the entire household, minors and domestic

servants included.

How much to give?

Since the spirit of Fitrah is sharing our joy with our needy

muslim bethren, it is only proper that we should share it

with a sense of equality. Therefore, Fitrah in the true

spirit, means giving on behalf of each person that

amount which one would spend on his or her own food

that day. So, each one gives according to his means.

Surah Maa’idah, verse 92 gives us an idea when it deals

with feeding needy persons for Kaffarah. It says: “on a

scale of the average for the food of your families.”

What to give?

Fitrah could be made up of the staple food of the people

to whom it is given. It is more practical to give its value in

money, so that the needy could buy the requirements of

their choice. If necessary, it may be distributed among

more than one person or given to organisations who

may arrange its distribution on a collective basis.

E’TIKAAF

DEVOTION TO PIETY

To observe E’tikaaf means to devote oneself to prayers

and piety within the mosque - especially during the last

ten days and nights of Ramadaan. This is a sunnah act

and carries great blessings. Performing the regular and

additional salaah, reciting the holy Quran and tasbeeh,

and learning the teachings of Islam are amongst the

duties one must observe during E’tikaaf.

Provisions for sleeping must be made within the precincts

of the mosque (it must be noted however that the House

of Allah should not be turned into a kitchen or bedroom,

and due care must be taken in these matters).

E’tikaaf places are under certain restrictions:

1. One may not give up fasting

2. No sexual union

3. No business activity

4. No going out of the mosque precincts frequently,

except for purpose of eating, toilet, cleaning,

bathing, changing clothes or obtaining one’s

essential needs.

A woman is not allowed to observe E’tikaaf without the

husband’s permission.

Q - What is the Hukum on the one

who has died and had days

unpaid?

A - If the excuse or illness did not

continue until he died, or he was

able to fast but did not, it is allowed

that his nearest relatives fast on his

behalf, or give dya for everyday

missed. The preferred view is that

they should fast. Saiyida Aa-isha

(RA) narrated that the Nabi (SAW)

said, “Whoever dies and fasting is

due on him, his guardian must fast

on his behalf.” (Reported by

Bukhari and Muslim). Ibn Abbas

(RA) narrated that a man came to

the Prophet (SAW) and said, “O

Prophet of Allah! My mother died

and has a month of fasting due by

her. Shall I compensate by fasting

on her behalf?” The Nabi (SAW)

replied, “Allah’s debts have more

right to be paid.” There is another

version that says, “If his excuse

continues until death, there is

neither dya (redemption), nor

Quathaa (compensation) on him.

Q - Which guardian should fast in

lieu of the deceased?

A - The fast can be observed by any

of the relatives, whether from the

father or mother’s side.

Q - Is it permissable for a stranger

(who is not related) to the

deceased to fast for him?

A - It is only allowed for a stranger

to fast for the deceased if he does

so with the agreement of the

relatives. It is otherwise not

allowed.

MAY LOVE AND PEACE PREVAIL THIS RAMADAAN

Q - To whom does the Fidya

(redemption) go?

A - The Fidya should be distributed

amongst the needy and povertystricken,

and not to the rest of the

persons mentioned in the Quran

regarding Zakah. Allah (SWA) says

in the holy Quran, Surah Al-

Baqara (No. 2) verse 184, “For

those who can do it (with hardship)

is a ransom, the feeding of one

(Thatbis) indigent. But he that will

give more, of his own free will, it is

better for him. And it is better for ye

that you fast, if ye only knew.”

“O you who believe, fasting is

prescribed for you, as it was

prescribed for those before you, so

that you may guard against evil -

for a certain number of days. But

whoever among you is sick, or on a

journey, (he shall fast) a (like)

number of other days and those

who nd it extremely hard may

effect redemption by feeding a

poor man. So whoever does good

spontaneously, it is better for him;

and that you fast is better for you if

y o u k n o w. T h e m o n t h o f

Ramadaan is that in which the

Quran was revealed, a guidance

to men and clear proofs of the

guidance and the criterion. So

whoever of you is present in the

month shall fast therein, except

those who are sick or on a journey

(he shall fast) a (like) number of

other days. Allah desires ease for

you, and He desires not hardship

for you, and He (desires) that you

should complete the number and

that you should exalt the greatness

of Allah for having guided you and

that you may give thanks. And

when My servants ask thee

concerning Me, surely I am nigh. I

answer the prayer of the suppliant

when he calls on Me, so they

should hear My call and believe in

Me that they may walk in the right

way.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 183-186)

Fasting is a religious institution

almost as universal as prayer, and

in Islam it is one of the ve

fundamental practical ordinances,

the other four being prayer, poorrate,

pilgrimage and Jihad. Fasting

has in all ages and among all

nations been an exercise much in

use in times of mourning, sorrow

and afiction. It is also in vogue

a m o n g t h e H i n d u s . E v e n

Christians were recommended by

Jesus to keep the fasts. But Islam

has introduced quite a new

meaning into the institution of

fasting. In Islam, it becomes an

institution for the improvement of

the moral and spiritual condition of

man. This is plainly stated in the

concluding words, “so that you

may guard against evil.” The

object is that man may learn how

he can shun evil, hence fasting in

abstaining from eating, but from

every kind of evil. All institutions of

Islam are in fact practical steps

aimed at the purication of the

soul. Allah knows best.

FIDYAH

DUES FOR FAILING TO

FAST IN RAMADAAN

If one is unable to observe the Fard

fast of Ramadaan due to reasons such

as old age or sickness (from which

they have no hope of being cured),

then this person is liable for a certain

“due” called Fidyah (ransom,

sacrice, redemption).

Qada (repayment) fast for the

number of days missed. There will be

additional reward and blessings for

the Fidyah already paid.

The Fidyah is: a deserving person

must be fed with two meals a day for

every fast not observed.

If a pregnant or breast-feeding

woman fears harm either to herself or

her issue or ward, then she may eat.

However, as soon as one regains

health or is free from any burden,

then he or she will have to observe the

RAMADAAN FAST

Kaffarah becomes due if we wilfully violate the

Ramadaan fast through any one of the following acts:

1. If we eat, drink, smoke or in any way break this fast

wilfully.

2. If we have sexual relations with our spuose while

observing the fast of Ramadaan.

The penalty of these offences is that we should perform

any one of the following three duties strictly in the

numerical order given below, which means that we must

do number one rst, if unable, then number two, and

only if we cannot, then number three.

Number 1:

Liberate a muslim slave, by paying his ransom etc.

Number 2:

Fast during the day for two full lunar months in

succession, without a single break (a woman is exempted

from fasting in succession, because of her natural

inability due to monthly periods, etc. but she is ordered to

continue fasting immediately after it is over. A man

however must continue with his Kaffarah fast, even if an

Eid falls in this duration).

Number 3:

Feed 60 deserving persons.

The principle of the above penalties is based on the

directives of the Holy Prophet (SAW)

The above Kaffarah applies specically for the

Ramadaan fast.

17th, 1926, in the charming town of Hermanus, Western

Cape, Fatima Achmat, nee Mullah, has graced the world

with her presence for nearly a century. After marrying the

late Hadji Amanullah Achmat, Mamma Fatima

embarked on a journey of love and family, raising ve

children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and

has returned to her home in Surrey Estate. Following the

passing of her beloved husband, she found solace in her

faith, dedicating her time to Ibada and cherishing

moments with her children.

Despite the passage of time, Mamma Fatima remains

vibrant and engaged, with her spirit undiminished. A

testament to her enduring curiosity and thirst for

knowledge, she has found a loyal companion in the

pages of the Vision Advertiser. Delivered by her devoted

grandson each month, the magazine becomes a portal

to discovery and connection for Mamma Fatima and her

RECIPE OF THE

MONTH: OVEN

ROAST LEG OF LAMB

INGREDIENTS:

1 leg of Lamb (3 - 3,5kg)

2 - 3 tablespoons Pepper Roast Spice Mix

1/4 cup olive oil

5 cloves of garlic

A few sprigs of rosemary

Root vegetables of choice

METHOD:

TO BE AFRAID OF HELL

Hazrat Noman bin Bashir (RA) said that he had heard the

Noble Prophet (SAW) say again and again, “I have asked

you to be afraid of Hell”,”I have warned you be afraid of

Hell.” If the Noble Prophet (SAW) were here now, where I

am, all the people in the market-place would have heard

his loud voice. He repeated these sentences in such a

rage that his sheet fell down from his shoulders to his

feet. Hell is such a place that must be feared and others

must be inspired to fear it. The more learned one is, and

aware of the realities of Hell and Heaven, the more fond

he is of Heaven and afraid of Hell. He will generate the

fear of Hell in others too.

Rinse the lamb and trim it of all excess fat.

Marinade the lamb with oil and Pepper Roast Spice Mix.

Make incisions into the leg with a sharp tip knife and

insert the garlic and sprigs of rosemary.

Transfer the leg to a roasting dish and add peeled root

vegetables of your choice. Add a sprinkle of Pepper Roast

Spice over your vegetables and cover your roasting dish

with a double layer of foil.

Ensure the foil seals the dish completely, so no heat

escapes (we want the lamb to steam in its own juices)

Roast in a preheated oven on 180 degrees for 3½ to 4

hours.

In the last 20 minutes of your cook time, remove the foil

and return the lamb to the oven to brown.

For the Gravy: Remove the excess liquid from the

roasting dish and transfer to a pan.

On a stove top over a low heat, simmer the liquid, until it

reduces, and it comes to a slow boil.

In a cup, mix 1 heaped teaspoon of corn our to a ¼ cup

of cold water and add it to the pan.

Stir until it thickens and stir in 1 teaspoon butter.

And that's it! So simple, yet absolutely delicious.

THE PATH OF

REACHING ALLAH

If at the time of Salaah, the hands

are not washed in wudhu, there is

a great possibility that a person

may develop one of the following

diseases:

• Loss of the colour of the skin

a n d o t h e r s k i n r e l a t e d

diseases

• Prickly Heat

• Eczema

• Burning of the skin

• Fungal diseases etc.

These are some of the diseases

that can be developed if the hands

a r e n o t w a s h e d r e g u l a r l y,

especially in these industrialised

times. Many times unconsciously

we also come in contact with

chemicals. It is not only in a

laboratory that chemicals are

used, but chemicals have become

so common that almost every

product we are using , contains

some type of chemical. So much so

that the fruit we partake of has

been sprayed with chemicals also,

therefore it has to be washed rst.

Even if we are just touching or

holding that fruit, we are in contact

with chemicals.

It is only the favour of Allah (SWA)

that he has instructed us to make

wudhu for salaah. The rst thing in

the morning that we should do is

perform wudhu for Fajr or

Tahajjud. In this way we will be

washing our hands before using

them for anything else. Then we

will be performing wudhu again

for Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Esha,

washing our hands each time. So

in this way we will be washing our

hands ve times a day, and this will

be of great benet to our health.

And therefore it is encouraged that

a person should make wudhu for

every salaah, even though he has

wudhu, because this entails great

benets.

From this, we can also understand

the importance of the Sunnah of

w a s h i n g t h e h a n d s b e f o r e

partaking of our meals. It is not

only an act of reward, but there are

great medical benets too.

OF THE INMATE OF HELL

Hazrat Abu Darda reports that the Noble Prophet (SAW)

said: “The inmates of Hell will suffer from hunger. This

suffering will be a torment of Hell. On their complaining,

will be given to eat of a thorny plant (called Zari) which

neither fattens nor satiates. On their again asking for

food, they will be given food which they will be unable to

swallow and which will choke up their throats. They will

remember that, when so aficted in the world, they

drank water to alleviate the suffering thus caused.

Hence, they will ask for water. Hot water in utensils held

by iron hooks will be provided to them which, when

brought near their mouths, will burn their faces. When

they drink it, their intestines will rip apart. They will say to

one another, “Call the guards of Hell.” So they will seek

them. The guards will ask: “Did not the prophets come to

you with clear signs?” They will reply: “Yes, they did

come.” “Then go on shouting. The petition of the

unbelievers is futile.” Now the inmates will say to one

another: “Call (the warden) Malik.” And will beseech: “O

Malik (pray) your Lord may decide our case.”He will

reply: “You have to stay here.”

E’mash said: “I am informed that the time between their

call and the reply of Malik will be a thousand years.” He

said that then the abiders of Hell will say to one another:

“Call your Lord because none is better than Him.” So

they will call out: “O Lord! Misfortune overtook us and we

were wayward. Our Lord! Take us out of here. If we

repeat our misdeeds, we will be very wicked.” Allah, full

of Grace, will say to them: “Abide here debased and

disgraced. Do not talk to Me.” Now they will be

disheartened and lose all hope of betterment of their

condition. They will mourn and wail aloud and lament

their failure and loss.

The meaning is that intense hunger will cause them as

much pain as the punishment will. They will be given to

eat Zari which is a thorny herbage from which animals

also turn away and if, at all, an animal does eat it, it dies.

It has poisonous thorns of re and is more bitter than

aloes and more stinking than a corpse and hotter than

re. If out of compulsion, having no other choice, one

does eat it, his hunger will not be satised and his belly

will remain unlled. It will choke the throat and block the

passage, the thorns not being swallowed and not being

vomitted out. Allah has said: “Verily with Us are heavy

fetters and Scorch, and a food that chokes...” (73:12-13)

Thus when the unbelievers ask the superiors of Hell to

pray for them, they will say in answer: “The Prophets

came to you but you did not pay attention to them so we

cannot do anything for you now. Do what you like. We

will not say anything in recommendation of any

unbeliever. We also say to you that, due to disbelief and

rebellion, you have let go the opportunity when prayers

could have been answered. Instead of submitting to the

Messengers you disobeyed them. What can you gain by

pleading now? Go on appealing. No remission will be

allowed to you because the prayer of the unbelievers is of

no avail. There is nothing for them except the re of Hell

and the wringing of hands in regret.”
