How successful is brief therapy and what evidence do you have that it works? The use of the term brief therapy to describe an intervention that is shorter than others can be deceiving. There are studies to suggest that a lot of other models are effective in a similar number of sessions. However there have been a great number of outcome studies and most show a success rate of between 65 and 85%. A quick browse on the internet can produce endless studies which clarify its success. Any of our students who do follow up refresher training with us will also provide strong anecdotal evidence that the method is effective and deserves its reputation. How would you handle an impossible answer to the miracle question such as “I would win the lottery or my father would still be alive”? In my practical experience within a therapeutic setting this has never happened so I do not have a lot of practical experience in it.
