música
One of the musical groups invited to the New
Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which is part
of the celebration of Colombia at the Expedia
Cultural Exchange, is Rancho Aparte.
Directly from the Department of Chocó, Rancho Aparte
represents the sounds of the Colombian Pacific, such as
abozaos, polkas, rebulú, contradances, and jugas through
its music. They are the most recognized band of Chirimía,
a rhythm that uses brass instruments and rescues the roots
and soul of a region where joy is present despite daily
difficulties. “The Chirimía has a combination of instruments
of European origin with native instruments; it is an ancient
musical format to which the voice and lyrics and other
instruments were added over time,” says Dino Manuelle,
Rancho Aparte’s vocalist.
Their performance at Jazz Fest will bring them their first
in the United States. They hope to discover more New
Orleans rhythms, connect with other bands from around
the world who will be present at the festival, and, of
course, be ready to make the audience enjoy themselves.
“At Rancho Aparte, we do not spare a single drop of sweat.
The audience will jump, sing, and get to know the music of
our population and our country. They will feel everything
from emotion to reflection with the lyrics of our songs,’ says
Manuelle.
Don’t miss Rancho Aparte’s performances at the New
Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. You can discover more
about this band through their social networks and musical
platforms.
The group’s energy has made them stand out in
Colombia, and they have conquered audiences on stages
such as the WOMEX Festival in Budapest and the Fuji
Rock Festival in Japan. They have been the favorites of
the Colombian Pacific music festival, the Petronio Alvarez
in Cali, Colombia, where they performed an exciting brass
band exchange with the renowned Hot 8 Brass Band from
New Orleans.
For Manuelle, the experience of playing with the Hot 8
Brass Band was a great idea. “We connected, and three
groups played a Chirimía song together. The energy was
tremendous, and we didn’t want to leave the stage,” he
said, adding that the similarity between New Orleans brass
and the Chirimía is in the percussion and wind instruments,
in that it is very urban and street music.
RANCHO APARTE
Uno de los grupos musicales invitados
al New Orleans Jazz and Heritage
Festival dentro del marco de la
celebración de Colombia en el Intercambio
Cultural Expedia es la agrupación Rancho
Aparte.
Rancho Aparte en el New Orleans Jazz and
Heritage Festival y descubre más de esta
A
few years ago, a Bernardo de
Gálvez statue went missing from
Canal Street’s landscape.
Donated by the Government of Spain,
the Bernardo de Gálvez Monument was
erected in 1977 to commemorate the
bicentennial year of the independence
of the United States to which the Spanish
Governor so decisively contributed.
When work began to convert the
World Trade Center Building (“WTC”) into
a hotel and residences, the Four Seasons
Group committed to protecting the statue
by removing it during the construction
phase and refurbishing it in preparation
for its return to its historical site, guarding
the river.
The Gálvez statue is particularly
significant to members of the local
Hispanic community and all lovers of New
Orleans’ rich history.
Bernardo de Gálvez, a Spanish
military leader and colonial administrator,
played a pivotal role in the American
Revolutionary War. Serving as the
Governor of Louisiana, Gálvez secured
vital support for the American colonies,
contributing significantly to their fight
for independence. Gálvez’s strategic
brilliance and unwavering commitment
earned him the “Hero of the American
Revolution” title.
In 1777, Gálvez, at 30, became the fifth
governor of the Louisiana Territory during
the Spanish governance period.
His career was propelled by his father,
a general in Central America, and his
uncle, a royal minister under Carlos III.
The young governor promptly endeared
himself to the local colony by marrying
Marie Félicité de Saint Maxent d’Estrehan,
a Creole beauty.
Because of his outstanding
contributions to our region, concerned
residents want to bring Bernardo back
and raise the funds necessary to re-erect
and relocate the Gálvez Monument on
an enhanced pedestal, which the new
restoration design recommends and the
monument deserves.
Help us bring the Gálvez monument
back and ensure its significance endures
for generations to come. Your support
present, and shape our future.
¡Qué Regrese Bernardo!
Hace unos años, la estatua de
Bernardo de Gálvez desapareció
del paisaje de Canal Street.
Donado por el Gobierno de
España, el monumento a Bernardo
de Gálvez fue erigido en 1977
para conmemorar el año del
bicentenario de la independencia
de Estados Unidos, al que tan
decisivamente contribuyó el
gobernador español.
Cuando comenzaron las obras
para convertir el edificio del World
Trade Center (“WTC”) en un hotel y
residencias, el Grupo Four Seasons
se comprometió a proteger la
estatua retirándose durante la fase
de construcción y renovándose
en preparación para su regreso a
su sitio histórico custodiando el río
Mississippi.
La estatua de Gálvez es
particularmente significativa
para los miembros de la
comunidad hispana local y
todos los amantes de la rica
historia de Nueva Orleans, pues
Bernardo de Gálvez, líder militar
y administrador colonial español,
jugó un papel fundamental en la
Guerra Revolucionaria Americana.
Como gobernador de Luisiana,
Gálvez aseguró un apoyo vital
para las colonias americanas,
contribuyendo significativamente
a su lucha por la independencia.
La brillantez estratégica y el
compromiso inquebrantable
de Gálvez le valieron el título
de “Héroe de la Revolución
Americana”.
criolla.
Por sus grandes contribuciones y
significado histórico, los residentes
buscan que el monumento
regrese después de cinco años
de ausencia y buscan recaudar
los fondos necesarios para volver
a erigir y reubicar la estatua de
Gálvez en el sitio propuesto en un
pedestal mejorado.
Recuperemos el monumento a
Gálvez y aseguremos que su
importancia perdure para las
generaciones venideras. Su apoyo
nos ayudará a honrar nuestro
pasado, celebrar nuestro presente
y dar forma a nuestro futuro.
PORTADA
Deejay Carolina
12
VIVA NOLA MAGAZINE - April / May 2024
By Axel “LOLA” Rosa
@lolalarosaa
Many know her as Deejay Carolina,
but those close to her call her
Carol. She wanted to study
psychology until she met her now husband
and manager, Juanes Altamirano, a.k.a.
Deejay Juanes, an established New Orleans
Latin nightclub and radio DJ. Dating him
made her curious to find out how it all
worked. “It’s like when you get on an airplane,
and you see a pilot’s control room with all
the buttons and stuff… and I would think,
‘How do you do this?!’” She recalls telling
Altamirano she wanted to learn how to DJ.
“I don’t think he took me seriously at first,”
she laughs. He gave her one week to prove
she was serious. He soon learned Zavala had
an exceptional talent. “Her good memory,”
he said. He added that most DJs usually cue
a song or two to mix into what’s currently
playing; Zavala could cue up to seven songs
without forgetting them. ‘Carolina learned
in one week what it took me many years to
learn,” said Altamirano.
Zavala made her DJ debut at the House of
Blues in New Orleans. She remembers being
excited and nervous. “I knew a lot of people
were curious to see how I was going to do.”
She felt pressure to do well and favorably
represent Deejay Juanes, her mentor.
Her popularity kept growing. She DJ’d a set
at every notable nightclub in New Orleans
and its surrounding areas. In 2014, the NBA
sought a female DJ who could mix English
and Spanish format for a party after the All-
Star Game. Deejay Carolina got the gig.
After that, she had bookings in nightclubs
and festivals outside Louisiana. In early
2015, Univision announced DJ auditions
to compete in the DJ@PJ competition for
Premios Juventud (Youth Awards). Even
with fans tagging her in the post, she told
Altamirano she didn’t think she had a
chance. He told her, “Do it anyway because
you may have something else that other DJs
don’t have,” remembers Zavala. “Ever since
that moment, I began to believe in myself.”
She competed for six weeks, became a fan
favorite, and was the only female in the top
three. The national exposure catapulted
her to play in almost every U.S. state and
presented Zavala with opportunities to open
for major music acts such as Daddy Yankee,
El Torito, Zacarías Ferreíra, and Bad Bunny,
to name a few.
Since the beginning of her DJ journey, she
established El Macaneo (Honduran Slang
for Wild Party or Good Time), a virtual DJ
concept to entertain her fans on Facebook
LIVE and to give exposure to independent
musicians. When the nightclubs closed
during the pandemic, Zavala strengthened
her connection with her audience, turning
El Macaneo into a virtual nightclub concept
with over 4 Million followers. She took El
Macaneo to TikTok LIVE with viewers
from all over the world.
Deejay Carolina’s future goals know no
bounds. With a tour spanning 40 U.S. cities
plus Latin American and European stops on
the horizon, she’s a force to be reckoned with
in the music world.
Beyond her DJ prowess, Zavala dreams
of expanding her family. She chuckles
when asked if she would add a little Deejay
Carolina or little Deejay Juanes to the mix.
“Only one, boy or girl. Whatever God
sends!” She wants to leave a lasting legacy for
aspiring female DJs. “I wasn’t the first Latina
female DJ, but one of the firsts, and I know I
have opened doors for other girls to do what
I love,” Zavala says. Through her journey,
she’s shattered stereotypes, proving that
women can thrive in the male-dominated
realm of DJing.
Muchos la conocen como Deejay
Carolina, pero sus allegados la
llaman Carol. Quería estudiar
psicología hasta que conoció a su ahora
esposo y manager, Juanes Altamirano,
of Blues de Nueva Orleans. Recuerda estar
emocionada y nerviosa.
a hacer”. Sentía la presión de hacerlo bien y
representar favorablemente a Deejay Juanes,
su mentor.
Su popularidad siguió creciendo. Fue DJ
en todos los clubes nocturnos destacados
de Nueva Orleans y sus alrededores. En
2014, la NBA buscaba a una DJ que
pudiera mezclar formato inglés y español
para una fiesta después del Juego de
Estrellas. Deejay Carolina, fue seleccionada.
Luego de esto consiguió presentaciones
en clubes nocturnos y festivales fuera de
Luisiana.
a músicos independientes. Cuando las
discotecas cerraron durante la pandemia,
Zavala fortaleció la conexión con su
audiencia.
Best Airport in North America - again!
For the third year in a row, the Louis Armstrong New Orleans
International Airport (MSY) received a top award for Best
Airport in North America (5 to 15 million passengers per year)
from the Airports Council International (ACI) World’s 2023
Airport Service Quality (ASQ) program.
New Direct Flight
Starting June 4, 2024, Southwest will offer nonstop flights
from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport to
Hollywood Burbank Airport in Burbank, California.
Firearm Safety Check
If you plan to travel with your firearm, you must plan carefully
to avoid facing a civil penalty that could cost you nearly
$15,000 and lose your PreCheck privileges. Your gun must
be unloaded in a locked, hard-sided case in your checked
bag. You should declare the firearm to the airline at check-in.
Knowing the firearm laws on each side of your trip is essential
since firearms may not be legally transported even in checked
baggage in some jurisdictions.
Aeropuertos (ACI) y el programa World’s 2023 Airport
instalaciones”.
“While the number of passengers
traveling through Louis Armstrong
Airport has steadily increased over
the last three years, our ability to
provide the best airport experience
in North America has remained the
same. There are over 4,000 MSY
employees representing a wide variety
of stakeholders who work hard
every day to make sure our passengers
get through the airport efficiently
and safely and that they feel the
spirit of New Orleans hospitality
while passing through our facility”
- Kevin Dolliole, Director of Aviation, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport
Nuevo Vuelo Directo
equipaje facturado.
Are We Ready for the New
Workforce Trends?
By Paula M. Belanger
@munera_paula
The workforce is undergoing a
significant transformation that drives
innovation with fast technological
advancements, shifting demographics, and
evolving employee expectations. Here are
some key trends to watch:
1. Remote Work: The COVID-19 pandemic
has accelerated the adoption of remote
work, and it’s here to stay. Flexible work
arrangements will continue to be a top
priority for employees, and companies
will need to adapt to attract and retain top
talent.
2. Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI is becoming
increasingly prevalent in the workplace,
enabling automation, streamlining
processes, and enhancing decisionmaking.
3. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI):
Organizations prioritize DEI initiatives
to foster inclusive work environments,
address systemic biases, and promote
equal opportunities.
4. Skills Training and Upskilling: With
technological advancements happening
at lightning speed, workers must develop
new skills to remain relevant continuously.
Employers will invest in training programs
to future-proof their workforce.
5. Gig Economy: The gig economy and
freelance market will continue to grow,
offering flexible work arrangements and
alternative career paths.
6. Employee Well-being: Mental health,
wellness, and well-being will become
top priorities for organizations as they
recognize the critical link between
employee happiness and productivity.
7. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented
Reality (AR): VR and AR technologies
will become more prevalent in training,
education, and work processes, enhancing
learning and improving outcomes.
8. Predictive Analytics: Predictive analytics
will increase, enabling organizations to
make data-driven decisions, forecast talent
needs, and optimize workforce planning.
9. Robotics and Automation: As AI
advances, robotics and automation will
become more prevalent, transforming
industries and redefining job roles.
10. Transparency and Trust: With growing
concerns about data privacy and ethics,
organizations will prioritize transparency
and trust-building with their employees,
customers, and stakeholders.
In conclusion, technological innovation,
demographic shifts, and evolving
employee expectations will shape
the workforce of 2024. Organizations
¿Estamos preparados para las
nuevas tendencias
de la fuerza laboral?
A
medida que nos
adentramos en 2024,
el mundo laboral
está experimentando una
transformación significativa. Los
rápidos avances tecnológicos,
los cambios demográficos y la
evolución de las expectativas de
los empleados están impulsando
la innovación en la fuerza
laboral. Estas son algunas de las
tendencias clave que hay que
tener en cuenta:
1. El trabajo a distancia: La
pandemia del COVID-19 ha
acelerado la adopción del
trabajo a distancia, y ha llegado
para quedarse. Los acuerdos
de trabajo flexible seguirán
siendo una prioridad para los
empleados, y las empresas
tendrán que adaptarse para
atraer y retener a los mejores
talentos.
2. Inteligencia Artificial (IA): La IA
es cada vez más frecuente en el
lugar de trabajo, ya que permite
automatizar, agilizar los procesos
y mejorar la toma de decisiones.
3. Diversidad, equidad e inclusión
(DEI): Las organizaciones están
dando prioridad a las iniciativas
de DEI para fomentar entornos
de trabajo inclusivos, abordar los
prejuicios sistémicos y promover
la igualdad de oportunidades
para todos.
4. Formación y mejora de las
cualificaciones: Con los avances
tecnológicos sucediendo
a la velocidad del rayo, los
trabajadores necesitarán
desarrollar continuamente nuevas
habilidades para seguir siendo
relevantes. Los empresarios
invertirán en programas de
formación para preparar el futuro
de su mano de obra.
5. Economía colaborativa: La “gig
economy” y el mercado freelance
seguirán creciendo, ofreciendo
modalidades de trabajo flexibles
y trayectorias profesionales
alternativas.
Por Paula M. Belanger
6. Bienestar de los empleados: La
salud mental y el bienestar de los
empleados se convertirán en una
prioridad para las organizaciones,
reconociendo el vínculo
crítico entre la felicidad de los
empleados y la productividad.
Componentes claves para la
retención de talento.
7. Realidad Virtual (RV) y Realidad
Aumentada (RA): Las tecnologías
de RV y RA serán cada vez más
frecuentes en los procesos de
formación, educación y trabajo,
potenciando el aprendizaje y
mejorando los resultados.
8. Análisis predictivo:
Aumentará el uso del análisis
predictivo, lo que permitirá a las
organizaciones tomar decisiones
basadas en datos, prever
las necesidades de talento y
optimizar la planificación de la
mano de obra.
9. Robótica y automatización:
A medida que avance la IA, la
robótica y la automatización
serán más frecuentes,
transformando las industrias y
redefiniendo los roles laborales.
10. Transparencia y confianza:
Ante la creciente preocupación
por la privacidad de los datos
y la ética, las organizaciones
priorizarán la transparencia y la
creación de confianza con sus
empleados, clientes y socios.
En conclusión, la innovación
tecnológica, los cambios
demográficos y la evolución
de las expectativas de los
empleados configurarán la
mano de obra de 2024. Las
organizaciones que den prioridad
a la flexibilidad, la inclusión, el
desarrollo de competencias y
el bienestar de los empleados
prosperarán en este nuevo
panorama. Si adoptamos estas
tendencias, podremos crear un
futuro laboral más equitativo,
eficiente y satisfactorio para
todos.
