On a sunny winter’s day in Costa Mesa, California, women from
the wellness industry locally, nationally, and even internationally,
gathered to learn, discover, and connect with one another at the
Women In Leadership Summit. The agenda featured an impressive
lineup of speakers along with wellness experiences, a photo booth,
and networking lunch and evening cocktails to facilitate connections
with old friends and newcomers to the event.
Dr. Zoe Shaw’s topic, ‘Banishing Burnout with Boundaries’, proved
to be a popular subject as the audience learned about the cognitive
distortions that sabotage work and life and lead to burnout.
Cognitive distortions such as stress equals success, ‘should’
statements, and personalization (blaming yourself for things outside
your control) can leave you dreading work, zapping your energy,
and even leading to physical symptoms such as headaches and
chest pains. Zoe reminds the audience that boundaries are not rules
for others, they are lines we draw for ourselves. Take care of your
future self by setting boundaries sooner rather than later. Dedicate
time for yourself before giving your time to work and others, and
take one day per week to rest. Say no to opportunities as soon as
you see signs of burnout and set rules that matter to you.
The Leadership Wellness Connection was explored by Dr. Tamika
Henry, who urged the audience to recognize signs of ‘Superwoman
Syndrome’; struggling to say no, soldiering through, struggling with
sleep, and solving problems for others before yourself. Taking time
for yourself and allowing yourself grace and gratitude is the basis
for self-care. Consider your body, support system, immune system,
community, and supplements, remember these using the acronym:
BASICS.
Beate Chelette’s talk on ‘Growing your Authority’ asked the audience
to consider their own skills, action set, skill set, and mindset. What
does the woman who earns a million dollars look like? How does she
feel? What does she wear, say, or do? Unless you know what it feels
like, it can’t happen for you! Clearly identify your goal, determine
your starting point, find your entry point, take action, and develop
your mindset to become the leader.
