Many individuals experience dark spots and an uneven skin tone due to factors such
as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and UV radiation. Natural and botanical
treatments have increased in popularity as an alternative to traditional agents such
as Hydroquinone. Research over the past decade has led to the discovery of several
naturally occurring ingredients, such as Niacinamide to lighten dark areas of the skin.
Niacinamide, an active form of vitamin B3 (niacin), is found naturally in root vegetables,
brown rice, nuts, and seeds, and used as a nutritional supplement. Niacinamide’s
cosmeceutical uses have been extensively researched and many studies highlight its
ability to prevent and treat hyperpigmentation.
Niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanin to cells in the upper layer of the skin,
having a lightening effect when applied to hyperpigmented areas. Niacinamide and
hydroquinone have comparable skin-depigmenting activity. Topical nicotinamide
is well tolerated by the skin, studies show that using Niacinamide at concentration
levels of 4-5% in a serum or moisturizer can reveal results after 8 weeks of treatment.
Combining niacinamide with other active ingredients, such as azelaic acid and arbutin
can enhance its effects to treat hyperpigmentation.
