TMEA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Ryan Fisher, Ph.D.
University of Memphis
LET US COME TOGETHER TO REVEL IN THE
RICHNESS OF OUR MUSICAL TAPESTRY, SHARE
OUR EXPERIENCES, AND DRAW INSPIRATION
FROM THE COLLECTIVE PASSION THAT DEFINES
THE TENNESSEE MUSIC COMMUNITY.
It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I extend my
warmest greetings to each of you through this edition
of the Tennessee Musician. In March, we found ourselves
celebrating Music in Our Schools Month®, a time to
spotlight the profound impact of music education on the
lives of students and the vitality it brings to our schools and
communities.
Music, with its unparalleled ability to transcend boundaries
and connect us at a deeper level, is an indispensable part of
every school’s curriculum. It fosters creativity, discipline,
and teamwork, offering students an avenue to express
themselves and explore their unique talents. In celebration
of Music in Our Schools Month®, let us collectively recognize
and appreciate you, our dedicated music educators across
Tennessee who work tirelessly to instill a lifelong love for
music in the hearts of their students.
As we reflect on the significance of music in education, I am
excited to highlight the upcoming TMEA Music Education
Conference. This annual gathering stands as a testament to
our commitment to advancing music education in our state.
The conference, scheduled for April 10-13, promises an array
of enriching experiences for music educators, providing a
platform to exchange ideas, enhance skills, and celebrate the
transformative power of music.
At the heart of the conference are the diverse interest
sessions, thoughtfully curated by our TMEA Board, to cater
to the varied needs and interests of our members. Whether
you are seeking innovative teaching techniques, exploring
new technologies in music education, or delving into topics
of inclusivity and diversity, our conference has something
for everyone. The exchange of knowledge and ideas in these
sessions is instrumental in shaping the future of music
education in Tennessee.
Equally exciting are the ensemble performances that
showcase the exceptional musical talent within our state.
From student ensembles to community groups, these
performances are a testament to the collective passion and
dedication that permeate the Tennessee music community.
The conference provides a platform for us to revel in
the beauty of diverse musical expressions and to draw
inspiration from the incredible performances.
One of the highlights of the TMEA Music Education
Conference is, undoubtedly, the All-State ensembles. These
exceptional groups represent the pinnacle of musical
achievement for our students. Their dedication, hard work,
and musical prowess are truly commendable, and witnessing
their performances is a source of immense pride for all of us
involved in music education. It is a moment to celebrate the
talent and dedication of our students and the teachers who
guide them towards excellence.
As we gather at the conference, I want to draw your
attention to a special event that promises to be a highlight
of the week. The TMEA Awards Banquet, scheduled for
Thursday evening, is an occasion to honor and recognize
the outstanding contributions of our music educators
and administrators. Their unwavering commitment to
excellence and dedication to the growth of music education
in Tennessee deserve our heartfelt appreciation. I encourage
each of you to attend this memorable event and show your
support for the remarkable individuals who shape the
musical landscape of our state.
Adding a touch of star power to the TMEA Awards
Banquet evening, we are thrilled to announce a special
performance by Nikisha Williams, an actress just coming
off a successful run as Eliza Hamilton in the award-winning
Broadway production, Hamilton. She was also on the touring
broadway production of The Color Purple prior to joining the
Hamilton cast. Ms. Williams’s presence at our conference
exemplifies the enduring impact of the arts and is evidence
that educators are performers, too. Nikisha was a member
of TMEA and not only did her students perform at our state
conference in 2015, but she was also recognized as the
TMEA Outstanding Young Music Educator in 2016. We are
proud to welcome her back to Tennessee for this special
performance.
In conclusion, I am excited about the upcoming TMEA
Music Education Conference and the opportunities it
presents for collaboration, learning, and celebration. Let
us come together to revel in the richness of our musical
tapestry, share our experiences, and draw inspiration from
the collective passion that defines the Tennessee music
community.
Thank you for your continued dedication to music education,
and I look forward to seeing you at the conference.
Sincerely,
Ryan Fisher, Ph.D.
TENNESSEE MUSICIAN THROUGH TIME
As we celebrate the 75th Anniversary publication year of the Tennessee
Musician, we recognize the work of countless TMEA members throughout the
history of our organization for their contributions towards making our annual TMEA
Conference possible today. The following is an excerpt from T. Earl Hinton’s (1998) “A
Brief History of the Tennessee Music Education Association”:
“For much of its history, the organization has placed strong emphasis on its state
conventions. President Carolyn Travers McCalla and the board set the association's
first stand-alone convention for November 8-9, 1954, in Nashville, on the campus of
George Peabody College.* State conferences have, with a few exceptions, been held
alternately in Nashville and then rotating each second year to a West and East site; in
