REGISTRATION
FOR LIMITED
PACKAGES
HAS STARTED
Suspension specialist BILSTEIN is
launching a new campaign to support
workshops in their day-to-day work.
An attractively designed workshop with
information options supports customer
loyalty and helps to generate additional
business. BILSTEIN has therefore
developed limited merchandise packages
with high-quality point-of-sales products,
for which workshops can now register
free of charge.
Under the motto “Merch Up Your Store”,
BILSTEIN supplies the workshops with
various decorative elements. They ensure a
welcoming and professional impression for
customers entering the workshop - and greater
identification with the brand among employees.
The merchandise package also includes an
updated brochure that not only provides a good
overview of the various BILSTEIN products, but
also features the topic of suspension technology
and the importance of shock absorbers– and
why it is worth opting for premium suspension
technology. Attractively presented, with the
counter display also included in the package, the
information can be used for sales conversations
and thus support the generation of additional
business.
The merchandise products showcase the new
BILSTEIN design. This is about more than just
the modernizing of the iconic logo that is now
much more memorable, modern and simply
unmistakable: The new claim “WAY AHEAD”
stands for the future-oriented attitude, the
high demands on BILSTEIN’s own quality and the
claim of BILSTEIN to lead the way – to create the
future of driving dynamics, comfort and safety.
Now workshops can benefit from the
passion for perfect shock absorbers with
an exclusive merchandise package. With the
INDUSTRYNEWS
Industry insight
Motor Ombudsman poll reveals saving
money is biggest driver for consumers
buying a used car in 2024
March can be a popular time for
consumers to buy a used car, as
stocks increase, following the part
exchange of older vehicles by owners for one
sporting the first new vehicle registration of
the year. An Opinion Matters poll of 2,050
UK driving licence holders commissioned by
The Motor Ombudsman, the Ombudsman
for the automotive sector, has found that if
consumers were to buy a second hand car in
2024, over half (58%) said that their primary
motivation would be to save money versus
buying an equivalent model that was brand
new.
This is particularly pertinent at a time
when consumer budgets remain under
pressure, with further increases looming
for household bills, such as council tax,
broadband, water, and standing energy
charges. In fact, female drivers, and those
aged between 25 and 34, would be the most
likely (63%) to opt for a car that already had
miles on the clock, in order to save money,
compared to their male counterparts (53%),
and drivers in other age groups.
The research equally revealed that four in
ten respondents would prefer buying a car
that had one or more previous owners, to
help avoid bearing the initial loss in value i.e.
depreciation, often associated with buying a
car from new. Nearly a third (32%) said there
is often a large choice of vehicles to select
from across the country when shopping
around, whilst just over a quarter of survey
participants (26%) agreed that they would
be able to test drive and buy cars that were
for sale on forecourts.
A fifth (20%) of consumers stated that
they would prefer to avoid the wait for their
chosen vehicle specification to be built and
delivered, with the findings equally showing
that buying used would give respondents
the chance to read first-hand owner reviews
and experiences about vehicle performance
and reliability for makes and models that
had been on the market for some time, to
ultimately help in their purchase decisionmaking
process.
When quizzed about some of the primary
benefits of buying a used car from a
retailer, rather from a private individual, via
a social media advert for example, nearly
half (48%) of respondents who would look
to buy second hand, stated that going to
an established bricks-and-mortar seller
provided them with the added reassurance
that a car had likely undergone rigorous
checks prior to going on sale.
Furthermore, 43% of survey participants
wanted a safety net if something was to go
wrong with their car after buying it, as they
would have more legal rights compared to
if they had sourced the vehicle via a private
seller, and could use The Motor Ombudsman
for assistance resolving a dispute if the
retailer was accredited.
INDUSTRYNEWS
A poll commissioned by The Motor Ombudsman has found that the primary reason for the surveyed
consumers buying a used car would be to save money – cited by over half (58%) of respondents.
The research showed that nearly one in four
buyers (38%) would prefer to visit a showroom,
as they would have a greater opportunity to
view and understand a car’s provenance i.e.
the history, including its servicing record,
and accompanying documentation, prior to
purchase. A similar proportion, 34%, said
that there would often be the opportunity to
purchase an extended warranty agreement to
help safeguard them from the burden of costly
mechanical or electrical failures, should these
occur later down the line.
Lastly, if they were to buy a second hand
car, a third of survey participants cited that
they would steer away from a private individual,
in favour of buying one from a seller that is
accredited by The Motor Ombudsman, as this
would give added peace of mind that the seller
was committed to providing high standards of
service and workmanship.
The Motor Ombudsman poll highlighted that,
for respondents who would opt for a used car
this year, the overriding majority (46%) would
buy a petrol model, with those in the 55+ age
bracket the most likely to do so (52%). Around
a quarter (26%) explained that a hybrid would
be their preferred choice, followed by a diesel
variant (17%), whilst one in ten (10%) would look
to get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle
(EV).
The latest study of consumer vehicle
purchase preferences has been commissioned
by The Motor Ombudsman to mark the
publishing of its online #DrivingDecisions Used
Car Buying Guide (www.themotorombudsman.
org/used-cars). The free-to-download resource
outlines key considerations for consumers
to take into account before signing on the
dotted line, and grants the facility to download
individual pages on dedicated subjects,
spanning test drives to extended warranties.
Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing
Director at The Motor Ombudsman said:
“Several million used cars change hands each
year, and the second hand market, for some
consumers, provides a more affordable
and accessible proposition.”
Bill added: “To help steer consumers
in the right direction as they embark on
their used car buying journey, our handy
reference guide has been designed to
outline some of the key considerations,
from initial research to extended
warranties, and to act as a useful prompt
for questions to sellers before signing on
the dotted line.”
ONKAR CHAHAL
QUALITY
CONTROL
Engine light
comes on...
again and again
So, a friend of mine calls me to ask for my help in repairing
her car. Her garage has had the car back three times for the
same fault, engine light comes on and stays on. She then
tells me they fitted a new EGR valve. Three times. On the same car.
Within three weeks.
Yeah, I know! You can see why she called me now
So, I told her I don’t do repairs anymore but I’ll have a quick look
for her, just to see if there is anything obvious that I could suggest
to her to take back to her garage. And then I looked under the
bonnet...
I’ve got a 2.2 Evoque in front of me and it’s in a shocking state!
Trims missing, wires hanging loose, finger prints everywhere and a
shiny new EGR valve right at the back. I look at the fault code and
it’s an EGR flow fault.
OK, I can see why they changed it, but why does the light come
on? Again? And again? So I poke and prod as I look at the system
and then I see it. The spring-loaded flap on the EGR cooler is just a
flap. The spring is AWOL! The EGR was (probably) working well but
with the spring missing/broken the flap doesn’t open and close as
it should.
Now I’ve spent a big part of my life at JLR and I love the brand,
looking at this Evoque in this state made me angry and upset in
equal measure, and she knew it.
So what did I do, I hear you ask?
Obvious really, I took it in to work with me the next day, ordered
a new cooler and fitted it, tidying the engine bay as I went along.
Carried out the road test from cold, over a distance and at a
speed to make sure the drive cycle is complete and happy. Back in
the workshop I checked for leaks or faults, none found. I gave it a
quick degrease and washed the car before returning it back to the
customer. Fixed.
I then gave her a bill for fixing the car, noting the poor standards
that were also put right and charged her accordingly. She just paid
the bill and passed it on to the other garage, which refunded her
the money, in full!
By Onkar Chahal
It doesn’t take much to put everything back to how it was
before you started. I take pride in customers being unable to tell
if I had been in the engine bay or the back of a dashboard, making
sure everything goes back as it was. I’d always make sure all trims
and fittings went back as they should, leaving a finished product
behind.
So the next time you put something back together, just
slow down and think.
Is this the best it can be? Is this the best I can do?
If it’s not then make sure it is, it doesn’t take a lot of extra effort.
Ironically, I went to the garage in question a couple of weeks later
to offer my services of training and development but specifically
my diagnostic course. However, the owner of the garage told
me that all his staff are trained already and that they don’t need
any further training. I then asked if they ever get come backs
or problem cars or if they ever get to refund customers over
misdiagnosis, to which he replied no. All his tech’s are master
standard. Hmmmm, not too sure about that answer!
Doing the job properly means
doing it right when no-one else
is looking. Quality is everyone’s
responsibility, isn’t it?
I originally trained as a mechanic by doing my apprenticeship with
Volkswagen and now just specialise in the very complicated jobs and garages
call me in to fix problem jobs when they get stuck, for this I mostly travel all
around the UK but sometimes work on an international level too and last year
alone I was called out to fix problems on cars in Milan Italy, Geneva Switzerland
and Dublin Ireland as well as all across the UK from Cornwall to Newcastle,
Wales and every where in between.
I first entered the National competition, DENSO League of True Mechanics
in 2021 where I placed first and earned the title of being ranked Number 1 in
the UK & Ireland on the league of true mechanics, I defended my title in 2022
and last year in 2023 I won a third time achieving the hat trick so I have now
decided to retire from the competition un-defeated and let someone else
have a go!
Recently, I had the tremendous honour of being invited into the BBC
Studios to be a guest live on OJ Borg’s BBC Radio 2 show live on air where
it was officially announced that I was the winner of the 2023 league of
true mechanics and retained my title for a third year and will as a result be
retiring. I had such a great time with the presenter OJ and he invited me to
hang around and be a part of the show, the host of the quiz called in sick last
minute so I stepped in and hosted Midnight Mastermind with him then chipped
in a few times throughout the three hour show. It’s such a big achievement
for me to win three times, be ranked number 1 in the UK and get to go on
a national BBC Radio 2 programme to have it announced it might make an
interesting story for the magazine, particularly as I am a regular reader!
Vehicle Inspection Pits.
Did You Know…
Despite their ubiquitous nature, vehicle inspection pits
pose a risk to those who work both in and around them.
Whilst they are below ground level,
falling into one is considered a
Fall from Height and must comply
with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
According to HSE, falls from heights
remain a leading cause of injuries and fatal
accidents at work.
Working at Height Regulations
The Work at Height Regulations 2005
apply to all work at height with a risk of a
fall liable to cause personal injury.
They place duties on employers, the
self-employed, and any person who
controls the work of others (for example,
facilities managers or building owners who
may contract others to work at height).
Experience shows that such events
usually arise due to poor management
control rather than equipment failure. In
MVR, risk assessments should include:
Prevention of falls in vehicle inspection
pits and the safety of steps into the pit
and ladders.
GRIPCLAD® can supply GRP Grating
covers for Bus & Coach Pits, Truck, Trailer
& HGV Pits, Wide Bodied Vehicle Pits,
and Railway & Locomotive Pits. DVSA ATF
Testing Pits right down to the humble
Home Garage Pit.
Uncovered Pits –
An accident waiting to happen
A deep pit left uncovered is a potential
hazard. Oil spills and other mechanical
fluids can cause slips, leading to injuries.
Additionally, if a garage is poorly lit or has
cars suspended, an uncovered garage
pit can present even more prevalent
workplace hazards.
Garage pits come in all shapes, sizes
and depths – and aren’t just for cars. For
HGVs, coaches, or even locomotive and
railway needs, garage inspection pits need
a durable, high-quality cover to protect
staff and visitors.
Open Inspection Fit – Without
Fall Protection
What can be done to prevent falls?
The simple answer is to…COVER IT
Most pits have been covered with
awkward, heavy, and cumbersome timber,
such as railway sleepers or metal grilles,
which pose a small risk of falling whilst
setting them down or lifting them out.
Why wooden planks don’t cut it
anymore?
Some garages still use traditional wooden
planks to cover inspection pits, which can
easily splinter, rot under the amount of
liquid in a garage and may not be suited
to hold significant weight. Wood is also
challenging to keep clean as it absorbs any
liquid, making walking on it a slip hazard.
They are also heavy to move around,
and storing them must be done carefully
to avoid damage and damp collection.
So, what is the practical answer?
You need a solid, durable, lightweight
cover to lift and shift and an obvious antislip
to eradicate this risk.
GRP Grating is the solution you need
GRIPCLAD® GRP Grating is durable and
lightweight and solves this problem in
multiple ways. Not only does it allow for
better cleaning, visibility and storage, but
it also allows for ventilation in the garage
pit and better chemical resistance.
IF YOU THINK SAFETY IS EXPENSIVE,
TRY AN ACCIDENT!
An Anti-Slip GRP Solution
for Garage Inspection Pits
To achieve total safety around vehicle inspection pits,
anti-slip GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) grating can be
installed with side ramps or in the majority of cases the
grating covers simply slot into a rebated ledge/bearer.
GRP garage covers are lightweight to lift out and
strong enough to take heavy weight. We recommend
our Open Mesh GRP Grating thickness at 38mm or
50mm.
We can cover Bus & Coach Pits, Truck, Trailer & HGV Pits,
Wide Bodied Vehicle Pits, Railway & Locomotive Pits,
GSF Car Parts launches
London expansion with
new Wembley branch
STRAIGHTSET equips
new Technical Training
Academy in Derby for KIA
Leading motor factor GSF Car Parts
began ambitious plans to supercharge its
presence in the capital with the opening
of its new Wembley branch.
This is the second branch the parts supplier has opened in
2024 and the first of several new sites it’s set to open in
the greater London area this year. It also marks a milestone
for Sukhpal Ahluwalia, with Wembley being home turf for GSF’s
Executive Chairman.
GSF supplies thousands of independent garages, national
chains and retail customers (via www.GSFcarparts.com)
throughout the UK with parts, tools, garage equipment and
specialist training via its network of more than 180 branches.
Joining 13 other branches in the London area, the new
Wembley branch is managed by Faraz Sarwar, whose team has
more than a century’s experience in the trade.
GSF Car Parts CEO Steve Horne said: “This is a really
important launch for us as it is part of our strategy for London.
We know there are scores of customers in the Wembley area
that we can provide an excellent service to, so the new branch
team are looking forward to building the kind of relationships
that will enable GSF to supercharge their business and ours.
“We’ve got more greenfield openings in London and the rest
of the UK coming soon as part of our national expansion, so
there’s a real feeling of momentum and positivity across team
GSF at the moment. We’re on an exciting journey and it’s great
to have more team members to bring along for the ride.”
By 2025 GSF will operate more than 200 branches across the
UK, making it the fastest growing provider in the industry.
GSF Car Parts Executive Chairman Sukhpal Ahluwalia said:
“The GSF team are doing a tremendous job of accelerating our
growth by getting these new branches kitted out, stocked up
and ready to trade in record time. Being at our Wembley branch
when it opened reminded me of my early days in the trade many
years ago and it’s great to see our team have the same hunger to
win as I did back then.
“I know exactly what it takes to succeed in the London
market, so we’re doing everything in our power to get our
new and existing branches all the resources they need to get
customers across the city the parts they need.”
tools and hands-on experience.
Straightset, renowned for their quality garage equipment and
designed for electric vehicles, future proofing the workshop for
Kia vehicles.
The training workshop incorporates:
l Dedicated, bespoke-designed workbench solutions
complete with Bahco tooling arranged in foam inlays,
l HPA-Faip tyre and workshop equipment,
LKQ Euro Car Parts extends zero
emission delivery capability in
partnership with Delivery Mates
LKQ Euro Car Parts, the country’s leading distributor
of car parts, accessories and added value services
to the automotive aftermarket, is piloting the use of
e-scooters and cargo pedal bikes in partnership with
sustainable courier provider, Delivery Mates.
Seven electric scooters are now delivering to LKQ Euro
Car Parts’ garage customers across the London area –
specifically from its Brixton, Catford, Colliers Wood, Acton,
Edmonton, Hayes and Wembley branches – together with a cargo
bike working out of Wembley.
The pilot has been designed to help LKQ Euro Car Parts further
optimise the make-up of its last mile delivery fleet. The business
currently has 70 motorbikes carrying out deliveries across
London and the south of England, and with the help of Delivery
Mates, intends to replace them all with e-scooters in the months
ahead, before considering the rest of its national fleet.
Matt Robinson, Divisional Director, South,
at LKQ Euro Car Parts,
“This is a landmark moment on our sustainability journey,
as we make continued informed changes across our fleet.
Our e-scooters should be a relatively straight swap for the
motorbikes we use already, and the cargo bike represents a
significant opportunity we are excited to explore.
“Cargo bikes have a similar capacity to the LCVs we use across
our branch network, and come with added benefits such as
being allowed to use bus lanes – which means they could improve
SLAs for our customers.
“We’ll never make changes that have a negative effect on the
unbeatable service and delivery times our customers expect
from us. This is about matching or improving what we do now,
and doing it more sustainably.”
Kevin Savage, Chief Operating Officer
at Delivery Mates, added:
“Delivery Mates, alongside LKQ Euro Car Parts, enhances urban
logistics through collaboration and innovation. Our carbonfree
delivery operation, employing electric scooters and cargo
bikes across Greater London, signifies our commitment to a
sustainable future. Together, we’re not just delivering car parts
but cleaner air, smoother traffic, and a greener tomorrow.”
The e-scooter and cargo bike trial marks the latest in a series
of sustainable fleet upgrades made by LKQ Euro Car Parts and
its parent company LKQ UK and Ireland. More than 100 electric
vans have joined the branch fleet over the last six months as well
as HGVs which run on alternative fuels derived from renewable
sources.
Castrol
ON EV fluids
As the automotive industry continues to transition away
from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and towards
electric vehicles (EVs), the need for lubricants and automotive
fluids that can meet the unique requirements of electrified
powertrains is set to increase.
Premium lubricant specialist Castrol
is working closely with carmakers
and motorsport teams to develop
its latest range of Castrol ON EV fluids.
With some predicting that 80% of
passenger cars on our roads could be
EVs by 2050, these products will soon
become mainstream in the aftermarket
space.
Castrol’s EV fluid range currently consists
of Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluids,
Castrol ON EV Thermal Fluids, and Castrol
ON EV Greases. Castrol is investing in and
developing products that support the
world’s transition to renewable energy and
the wider adoption of e-mobility.
While ON EV Thermal Fluids and ON
EV Greases are currently only available
to OEMs, Castrol’s ON EV Transmission
Fluid is already available to franchised and
independent workshops certified to work
on EV powertrains. Available in five-litre
packs, the two new products – in D1 and D2
variants – suit a wide range of EVs, helping
to extend the life of the drivetrain system
and enabling EVs to go further on a single
charge (vs. mass-market EV factory fill
fluids). The product is a high performance
and highly efficient fully synthetic fluid for
transmissions paired with dry e-motors,
offering high levels of gear and bearing
protection.
Patrick Bauer, Team Leader of Thermal
Management Fluids says: “As greater
volumes of electric vehicles enter the
aftermarket, more OEMs have asked us to
make an advanced EV transmission fluid
available to their workshop partners, to
support ongoing repair and maintenance
activity. While these fluids in some EVs
are deemed ‘fill for life’, workshops need
replacement product in the event of a
repair, and there can also be a requirement
to change the product early to safeguard
protection in certain use cases. We have
collaborated very closely with OEMs and
Tier One suppliers to develop, test and
deploy products to meet the required
performance criteria.”
In addition to supporting businesses
bringing production EVs to market, Castrol
has worked closely with motorsport teams
to test EV fluid technologies on the track
before they reach the road to ensure the
range delivers performance, efficiency
and durability for the most demanding
electrified powertrains.
EV
WAI adds new safety
feature to its electric
vehicle charging cables
Leading automotive parts supplier and electric
vehicle charging cable specialist, WAI Europe, has
revealed a new safety enhancement in its popular
electric vehicle (EV) charging cable range, to address
growing concerns over safety hazards associated
with prolonged EV cable use.
The latest evolution to WAI’s EV charging
cable features a thermal cut off switch
inside the plug, which, once it gets
to certain temperature, is switched off to
mitigating the risk of electrical damage and
fire hazards. Once the cable has cooled, it
switches itself back on.
“The intensive use of any electrical
equipment brings inherent safety risks,
especially the use of EV charging cables
at home or in garages. With so much
current running through the cable, it will
heat up, and if left plugged in, this can be
dangerous,” said Richard Welland, president
at WAI Europe.
He adds: “Recent reports have highlighted
a concerning trend of individuals leaving
charging cables plugged in continuously,
leading to overheating and potential safety
risks. In response to this, our new EV cables
come equipped with an innovative thermal
cut-off feature.”
When the cable temperature reaches
80 degrees, the built-in mechanism
automatically cuts power, preventing further
overheating and potential damage. Once
the cable cools down to a safe temperature,
it resets and resumes charging operations,
ensuring continuous and safe charging
experiences for users.
With this brand-new enhancement, WAI
reaffirms its commitment to prioritising
user safety and delivering reliable solutions
for the evolving needs of electric vehicle
owners.
Welland continues: “WAI cables are the
first in the market to have a thermal cut-off
built in, so that if any high temperatures are
reached, consumers can be confident in the
extra layer of safety available.”
WAI’s EV charging cables range cover
popular vehicle applications including Type
2 Female to Type 2 Male 32 Amp Single
Phase and Three Phase, Type 2 Female to
UK Plug (with controller) 16 Amp and 32
WAI’s EV cables are TUV Certified
and available in a five-meter length and
10-meter extension length. The company’s
extension EV charging cables are part of
its commitment to provide a high-quality
alternative to manufacturer supplied
cables with the option to extend existing
charging cable.
Other features of the cables include
EV
CHARGED UP:
Why the UKs
EV transition
is in full swing
By Mike Cafferky,
Operations Director
of OCU Evolution.
The first “real” electric vehicle (EV) was
introduced to roads in the US in 1888,
meaning we’ve had over 100 years of
automotive advancements to weigh up their
potential as the natural successor to fossil
fuel powered vehicles.
Despite this, it’s only recently that
demand for EVs to become the main form
of transportation has intensified. This is due
to a series of policies and commitments
introduced by the Government, which have
been designed to support the UK’s move to
net zero by 2050.
To meet this target, the UK needs a radical
reduction in the burning of fossil fuels,
phasing out some of the biggest emitters,
petrol and diesel cars, and replacing them
with cleaner, more sustainable electric
vehicles (EVs).
Businesses need to view the adoption
and integration of EVs as an essential
process and not something that is merely a
consideration.
The key benefit for transitioning is to
improve a company’s sustainability and
impact on the environment. Businesses
operating fleets of EVs have lower emissions
compared to those with petrol and
diesel vehicles. Even counting electricity
generation, the carbon emissions of an
electric car are around 17-30% lower than
driving a car with an internal combustion
engine .
Grants and financial incentives are
available for small-medium sized businesses
looking to switch to an EV fleet. The
Government’s Electric vehicle infrastructure
(EVI) grant for staff and fleets provides SMEs
with money off the cost of installing EV
chargepoints and supporting infrastructure
for their staff and fleet vehicles.
EVs offer other benefits too, such
as lower Benefit-in-Kind tax rates, 0%
road tax until 2025 and exemptions
from London Congestion Charges. VAT
registered companies can also claim back
50% of the VAT on vehicle payments or
maintenance costs.
With new vehicles powered by
combustion engines set to be banned by
2035 in the UK, businesses can benefit by
investing and evolving their fleets now.
Is range anxiety still a prominent issue
with EVs?
Almost all (99%) of car journeys in
England are under 100 miles and most
could be made by an EV without needing
to recharge. This is simply because many
EVs can now travel further than before.
The average battery range for new vehicles
launched in 2023 was almost 300 miles on
a full charge, while vans such as the Ford
E-Transit can do around 236 miles when
fully charged.
Despite this, there is still a level of
anxiety among the public regarding existing
electric vehicle infrastructure (EVI) –
most notably the accessibility of charging
points for long journeys. The Society of
Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)
reported in 2022 that, “as plug-in vehicle
registrations surged, public charging
infrastructure expansion has failed to keep
pace. Plug-in cars on the road had grown
a phenomenal 280.3% between 2019 and
2021, but slow/fast public chargepoints
grew by just 69.8% in the same period.”
That’s why we’re addressing these
concerns by providing a sensible, endto-end
solution. OCU Evolution provides
businesses with the complete EV
package, from installing and connecting
infrastructure through to providing
charging units for cars, lorries and
buses. We also support with the ongoing
maintenance and commissioning of substations,
solar panels and batteries.
And the timing couldn’t be better. The
SMMT reported that Britain’s millionth
battery electric car (BEV) hit the road in
January 2024, and SMMT’s latest used car
market figures for 2023 show that BEV
uptake was up 90.9%, proving to us that
there is potential for huge growth provided
supply from the new market remains
consistent.
Is the current EV charging infrastructure
prepared to cope with further EV
adoption? If not, what needs to be done to
remedy this?
EV adoption will stall without a public
network of chargers for drivers. People
need access to chargepoints at home and
at work, as well as for long-distances or
those in need of a quick top-up.
As of January 2024, 55,301 charging
points have been installed across the UK
, but the Government has said it wants to
grow that number to 300,000 charging
points by 2030. This highlights the big
task ahead, and the need to expand the
network and increase investment. Despite
this, we want to contribute towards that
momentum of getting those charges in the
ground over the next six years. For us it’s
about having the technicians and the right
equipment in the right place to service
businesses who want to build their charging
capabilities. While the UK has a long road
ahead, if we continue to collaborate and
embrace technological advancements,
we’ll be in a strong position to hit the zeroemission
vehicle target.
We know there is a huge opportunity
to create a more sustainable and efficient
transport system in the UK, but if the EVI
and charging stations are not in place, it
will be increasingly difficult to encourage
businesses and members of the public to
The outstanding business
opportunities of new energy
vehicles
The thermal systems of new energy vehicles (NEV), which
include hybrid and electric cars, are more advanced than in
there conventional combustion engine cousins and so require
specific attention when they are maintained and repaired. This
presents the independent sector with a real opportunity as there
is great potential should they gear themselves up to offer the
appropriate level of service and the replacement parts that are
required.
“Many NEV’s thermal systems rely on heat pump solutions,
which are more advanced than a typical air conditioning (AC)
loop and these systems are crucial for the electric car’s mobility,
range, battery, charging and driving comfort,” explains Nissens
Automotive’s Marketing Manager, Jan Zieleskiewicz.
“Nissens Automotive is the perfect aftermarket partner for the
NEV challenge, as we have decades of aftermarket expertise and a
comprehensive product range that reflects the rapid developments
in vehicle technology. As a result, we have established a wide
range of NEV thermal management engine products alongside our
highly regarded AC programme, as well as an engine efficiency &
emissions parts range, which all cater for the majority of makes
and models within the European car parc. Besides the coverage
and the quality, the concept also consists of in-depth technical
knowledge shared in various formats and covering multiple needs
from ‘fundamentals’ to ‘expert’.”
In addition, all these products are manufactured to Genuine
Nissens Quality standards to provide the independent service and
repair sector with premium grade replacement components, that
deliver trouble-free installation and excellent performance.
Unique Aftermarket Offering
Nissens Automotive’s NEV parts offering comprises more than 850
items for the most popular applications and caters for more than
3,800 OE part numbers. As always, whenever needed, its products
come equipped with extra installation parts included, to provide
a First Fit solution, and with the company’s established support
services like the NTC/Experts technical training programme, it
shares knowledge within the NEV’s thermal management system,
including heat pump solutions.
Cleevely Group
unveils new EV
training course dates
Cleevely Group, a pioneer in the servicing and repairs of
electric vehicles (EVs), has confirmed dates for its new ‘At
Ease With EV’ training course. It will be held at the Cleevely
EV training facility in Cheltenham on April 6th, July 20th,
and October 12th.
Offering hands-on high voltage education, the course
aims to build the confidence of technicians who have IMI
Level 2, 3, or 4 qualifications but lack regular opportunity to
practice EV skills in their workshop.
“As EVs become increasingly common on our roads, it’s
essential for technicians to feel competent in the servicing
and repairing of them,” said Matt Cleevely, Founder and
CEO of Cleevely Group. “This new course provides an
invaluable opportunity for technicians to refresh and update
their expertise through practical workshop experience on a
2018 Nissan Leaf and Tesla Y Performance.”
Delegates will participate in practical tasks covering
a range of topics, including interlocks, charging faults,
high voltage battery testing and repairs, EV servicing,
common EV faults, and a Tesla service mode ‘deep-dive’
demonstration.
The training takes place at the award-winning Cleevely
EV workshop, the UK’s most renowned independent EV
specialist. It brings an exclusive chance to learn directly
from Matt and acclaimed technical trainer, Alistair Finch.
“By offering this training on Saturdays, we aim to minimise
disruption to workshops during the week,” said Matt.
“It means technicians can enhance their skills without
sacrificing valuable work time.”
Lunch and refreshments will be provided, along with a
certificate of attendance – which counts towards CPD.
EV
12-volt batteries, the
EV battery of choice!
Following its recent findings concerning the ongoing demand for 12-volt batteries, Ecobat
Battery can now release further evidence for this long term aftermarket requirement,
following research into electric vehicle (EV) breakdown statistics.
As it previously made clear, whether an EV incorporates an
internal combustion engine (ICE) with a 48-volt or 350-volt
battery in hybrid form, or uses a 400-volt plus battery as a
fully battery powered variant, a ‘traditional’ 12-volt battery is also
fitted. The revelation comes however, in the fact that in common
with their ICE powered counterparts, the number one cause of EV
breakdown also turns out to be failure of this battery! But why?
Since the UK launch of the Tesla a decade ago, and following
changes in government legislation, many other vehicle
manufacturers (VM) have added full EVs to their product ranges. As
a result, they and their partners have invested hundreds of millions
of pounds to develop the electric motors, control systems and high
voltage (HV) battery packs to make the move from relying on an ICE,
to using fully electric propulsion achievable.
However, as stated earlier, in the quest to develop these new
technology vehicles, not everything is new, as 12-volt systems remain
integral to EVs to enable them to perform vital functions. These
include not only powering the lighting system, both internal and
external, but the central locking, alarm, and other security features.
It also powers the vehicles onboard computer and diagnostic
systems and plays a role in starting the main HV battery pack.
These systems put significant load on the 12-volt battery and
whereas in vehicles incorporating an ICE after providing a big burst
of electrical energy to power the starter motor, it is recharged by
an alternator and managed by the vehicle’s electronic control units
(ECU), a process that has been refined over many years, in an EV,
the 12-volt battery is performing a much more cyclic function, being
charged by the high voltage battery and discharged by the 12-volt
systems that rely on it.
Irrespective of whether the vehicle is an EV or incorporates
an ICE, the maintenance of its 12-volt battery is down to the
parameters set in the ECU’s battery management system, and this is
where there is a potential conflict of interest.
It’s well known that discharging a standard 12-volt SLI (starter,
ignition & lighting) battery beyond 50% will reduce its life
expectancy. However, largely due to the fact that range anxiety
is one of the key barriers to EV uptake, VMs want to maximise the
range capability that they can offer drivers. To do this the battery
management system has to make a compromise between charging
the 12-volt battery to keep it in top condition, or providing for the
vehicle’s optimum range, which can result in an undercharged 12-
volt battery, affecting its useable life.
A further impact on the life of the 12-volt battery comes with the
advanced technology inbuilt into an EV. Its inherent connectivity
and the plethora of apps it can run, such as to remotely ’wake it
up’ and activate the 12-volt system, for example, can require 5,000
activations per day, which can seriously discharge the 12-volt
battery and leave the driver with a lifeless car.
Although the VMs work hard to update their systems when
they find these issues, in the meantime they provide a welcome
opportunity for the aftermarket because, despite many workshops
being wary of working on EVs, it should be encouraging for them to
know that the most likely cause of a breakdown, is due to one of the
components that they are most familiar with.
Therefore, before surrendering an EV to the franchised dealer
network, workshops should first assess the condition of the 12-
volt battery and if that’s the issue, providing they use the correct
protocols for working on a HV vehicle, installing a replacement not
only solves a problem for the owner, but it also makes a profitable
job for the business.
As a result of its findings and to further assist the independent
service and repair sector, Ecobat Battery has proactively updated its
application data on its online Battery Finder, as well as its Numax and
Lucas data on MAM Autocat, to provide all the necessary application
links to these vehicles.
Thinkcar rolls out
collaborative remote
diagnostics
Access to vehicle manufacturer level diagnostics
has long posed a challenge for independent garages.
And yet, ever-advancing automotive technologies
have made them increasingly indispensable, even for
routine servicing and maintenance.
Thinkcar aims to address the ageold
issue of data access through
its pioneering remote diagnostics
offering. It’s a solution for workshops
that don’t have access to manufacturer
diagnostic platforms.
“With Thinkcar’s remote programming
services, no vehicle repair is beyond the
capabilities of an independent garage,” said
Alex Gillbanks Managing Director of Impact
Diagnostics, the supplier behind Thinkcar
UK. “Our aim is to empower technicians to
profitably service the needs of today’s car
parc.”
An ecosystem of Thinkcar workshops
support each other with access to vehicle
manufacturer level diagnostic platforms.
Queries can either be sent to the entire
network or to a specific garage.
“It means you benefit from other
garages that may already have access to
manufacturer diagnostic subscriptions,”
said Alex. “They’ll be able to programme,
calibrate and help through a direct
connection with the car via a Thinkcar
vehicle communication interface (VCI).
Users then agree a suitable fee for the
service, so it’s a win-win and we’re seeing
a lot of uptake.”
With something to suit every budget,
Thinkcar’s remote diagnostic solution
extends across a wide range of its devices,
including the Thinkcar Max, Thinkcar X10S,
Thinkcar X5, and the recently added Euro
Master X.
Technicians simply tap the ‘remote
diagnosis’ for access to technical support,
enabling the seamless initiation for
module replacement and calibration,
for example. Text, images and diagnostic
reports can be exchanged throughout the
process and, with the Thinktool X10S and
X5, video and voice guidance ensures it’s a
pain-free process.
“The Thinktool X10S and X5 serve as
the ultimate ‘phone a friend’ diagnostic
system,” said Alex. “They fully embody
Thinkcar’s philosophy of quick, easy, and
efficient diagnostics and repairs.”
Founded in Los Angeles, USA, Thinkcar
emerged from a collective of automotive
enthusiasts possessing expertise in vehicle
maintenance and mobile connectivity. The
brand quickly embarked on a mission to
pair traditional vehicle diagnostics with
mobile technology.
“From the outset, Thinkcar set its sights
on creating diagnostic tools that not only
boasted unparalleled functionality but
were also compact and cost-efficient,”
said Alex. “This focus on maximising
functionality while minimising costs has
been a hallmark of Thinkcar’s ethos,
ensuring that their tools are not only
advanced but also accessible.”
2022 marked a significant milestone
for Thinkcar with Impact Diagnostics, a
trusted name in the UK’s diagnostic and
remote programming sphere, officially
becoming the UK’s approved supplier.
The partnership propelled Thinkcar’s
multi-brand diagnostics and remote
programming services across the UK.
ADAS
Navigating the
ADAS Revolution:
A Guide for Garages
With Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
now a legal necessity in new cars, will garages
find themselves with a growing problem, or an
opportunity?
Over the last few years, the hot topic for garages has been whether
they’ll invest in the training and equipment required to work on EVs.
However, more pressing, and much less talked about, is the growing
necessity for garages to be able to calibrate ADAS systems.
And unlike EVs, ADAS isn’t a ‘will we, won’t we?’
In a few years, majority of the cars on workshop ramps are going
to have some form of ADAS. And given the safety implications of
a misaligned ADAS system, garages without the required level of
knowledge, training, and equipment, could find themselves with a
problem.
However, the rise of ADAS-equipped vehicles also presents
independent garages with an opportunity for an additional major
income stream.
Iain Molloy, managing director of A1 ADAS Solutions, says that with
44 percent of cars predicted to have level 2 autonomy by 2030,
garages need to consider not if, but how they’re going to approach
the issue – and capitalise on it.
He said: “There are two routes to successfully managing ADAS
work. One is to invest in the equipment and training to carry out the
work in-house, and the other is to forge a working partnership with
an ADAS, diagnostic, and calibration specialist.
“There’s no right or wrong; it’s what’s best for your garage. Some
workshops want to invest and become specialists. Others want to
focus on something else. What’s important, is deciding how you’re
going to provide the ADAS service to your customers.
“Both routes will generate an extra revenue stream and make a
garage more profitable. Whether that’s by selling ADAS as a service
provided by your own technicians, or by putting a mark-up on the
service you’ve bought in from a mobile van, or remotely dialled-in
ADAS specialist.
“Both strategies will reduce key-to-key times and prevent a
backlog of work. It all contributes to a healthier bottom line.”
A1 ADAS Solutions says both approaches are working equally well for
its own customers.
For those who want to specialise inhouse, it is a product distributor
of ADAS and diagnostic equipment via its ‘set up for you’ service.
And for those who don’t want to invest, or have the liability of
carrying out the work themselves, it provides a ‘done for you’ ADAS
and diagnostics service either via its national mobile fleet, or by
remotely dialling into the vehicle via an interface.
Iain continued: “There’s a lot to consider when deciding how to
manage ADAS work. Garages have a duty of care to ensure a vehicle’s
ADAS system is going to behave as the manufacturer intended.
“Unfortunately, there’s often a lack of understanding about when a
vehicle needs calibrating.
“Most technicians know removing a bumper has implications
on the vehicle’s ADAS system. But less realise it’s the same after
working on things like the steering rack, suspension, shock
absorbers or even just the wheel alignment. All of this work alters
the geometry of the vehicle, and therefore its sensors.”
Iain says getting the right advice is essential, especially for those
investing in equipment.
He concluded: “Most ADAS distributors have experienced
salesmen, but no ‘hands on’ experience. That’s where we’re
different. We literally live and breathe it, day in, day out.
“And ADAS isn’t a simple one-off purchase; it requires ongoing
training and technical support. With that in place, we see garages
maximising the return on investment in as little as two to three
months.”
Whichever route a garage chooses, the road ahead is paved
with ADAS potential, and those who navigate it wisely stand to
reap the rewards of the evolving automotive landscape.
NEWS
Autoelectro ignites classic car
passion – in more ways than one!
In the world of classic car
restoration and maintenance,
finding the right replacement
parts can feel like searching
for a needle in a haystack,
according to Autoelectro’s
Harnek Bhogal, but the
remanufacturer has carved a
reputation for being a go-to
supplier for classic car and rare
vehicle applications.
As we move into warmer months and longer days, classic car
enthusiasts will be dusting off their treasured classics, ready
to take on the open road. It is common, however, to find their
motors needing some TLC during the season – potentially needing a
starter motor or alternator replacement.
A family-run business, now in its third generation, the Bhogal
family is renowned for their classic car passion, with the VW Golf
Mk1 and Mk2, Triumph TR7, 1955 Daimler Regency II part of their
repertoire, so it is not an exaggeration that classic car motoring is at
the heart of Autoelectro’s strategy.
And because Autoelectro is a remanufacturer, it is in the enviable
position to cater to even the most unique or outdated electrical
systems installed on classic and rare models.
Harnek said: “To be able to cater to these demands, we need
to have an in-depth understanding of the specific requirements of
the components and a detailed technical understanding of how the
electrical systems work, which is a key selling point of our business
in the marketplace.
“Our technicians and engineers’ attention-to-detail is paramount.
Usually, classic car owners are petrolheads that place great
emphasis and priority on authenticity and quality when it comes to
replacement parts.”
Autoelectro prides itself on using only the highest quality OE
replacement components. This meticulous attention to detail
ensures that classic car owners receive parts that, not only fit
seamlessly into their vehicles, but also uphold the originality and
performance standards that they want.
Commitment to preserve OE
Central to Autoelectro’s ability to cater to the unique demands of
classic cars is, not only its deep understanding of the components
themselves, but the historical significance of these vehicles.
With a range of stock that includes dynamos, ACR alternators, and
inertia starter motors, Autoelectro is committed to continuing the
rich heritage of British motoring and providing enthusiasts with the
tools they need to keep their cherished icons on the road.
Here are some examples of classic car applications in stock:
Starter motors:
Autoelectro goes above and beyond
Recognising that classic cars often feature custom or non-standard
configurations, Autoelectro offers a bespoke service, adapting
and building starter motors and alternators to meet the specific
requirements of individual customers.
Harnek said: “This commitment to customisation ensures that
every restoration project receives the attention and expertise it
deserves.”
Maintain originality
In line with its ethos of authenticity, Autoelectro’s ‘reman and
return’ facility offers customers the opportunity to maintain the
originality of their vehicles. By allowing customers to send images
of their parts via WhatsApp, Autoelectro’s production and technical
teams can assess the feasibility of remanufacturing the component,
ensuring that classic car owners can preserve the integrity of their
vehicles without compromise.
Here are some recent examples of Autoelectro’s ‘reman
and return’ service:
l Bentley Arnage 6.7 V8 petrol (2000-onwards) alternator
l Aston Martin Lagonda 5.3 V8 petrol (1990-onwards) alternator
l Volvo 700 Series 2.4 diesel (1986-onwards) alternator
l Nissan Figaro 1.0 petrol (Japanese Import – 1991-onwards)
starter motor
l Jaguar XJ 6.0 V12 petrol (1995-onwards) starter motor
Harnek concluded: “Despite the challenges posed by sourcing
quality old core and replacement components, we remain ready
for another busy but successful classic car season. Customer
satisfaction is our number one priority, and we don’t take our
reputation for granted.
“Each component undergoes rigorous testing at both the
component and full unit level, ensuring that only the highest quality
products bear the Autoelectro name. By upholding these stringent
standards, Autoelectro continues to inspire confidence among
customers, reaffirming its position as a trusted partner in the
preservation of classic cars for generations to come.”
V-TECH
APPOINTS BRAND
AMBASSADOR
AS IT GOES FOR
GROWTH
Garage equipment supplier says
commitment to customer care is key
V-Tech UK, one of the leading providers
of diagnostic and garage equipment,
has announced it has appointed an
ambassador to help drive the group’s
growth strategy in 2024.
The role has been secured by Andy
Savva, The Garage Inspector, one of the
aftermarket’s most renowned trainers and
automotive experts.
His association with V-Tech UK and
its brands will mark the start of a period
of consolidation for the group, as it
brings together its five business entities
to create a full service and equipment
offering to independent garage workshops,
bodyshops and tyre shops throughout the
UK.
Chris Coyle, chief operating officer at
V-Tech said: “I’ve known Andy for over 20
years and watched him help hundreds of
garages navigate the decisions involved in
running a successful workshop business.
“He operates with the utmost integrity
and is passionate about finding out what
a garage business really needs. He’d never
recommend a product or service that’s
not the best fit for them.
“There’s a huge amount of synergy
and trust between Andy and V-Tech.
This is highlighted by the fact we’re the
first garage equipment supplier he’s ever
worked with in this way.
“He has a large network, and whilst that
will undoubtedly benefit V-Tech, it works
both ways.
“We focus on long-term relationships
and ultimately helping customers to realise
a return on investment, whatever garage
equipment they buy from us.
“That’s why this isn’t just any ambassador
deal. We’re making it customer centric.
This means, in certain cases, we’ll pay for
customers to attend one of The Garage
Inspector courses to help expand their
skill set and maximise the long-term use of
their garage equipment.
“This genuine desire to make workshop
businesses stronger, not only means
better a return on investment, it facilitates
a healthy business with solid growth
potential. That’s good news for the
workshop owner, us, and the aftermarket.”
Andy added: “It wasn’t a hard decision to
work with V-Tech, but it wasn’t one I took
lightly either.
“I’ve engaged with lots of garage
equipment suppliers over the years and
they often let my garage folk down on
everything from delivery dates to poor
customer service. That won’t happen here.
“And I’m certainly not representing
V-Tech to sell their products. Good
products sell themselves. I’m here because
I know they excel at service – and that’s
what really matters to the customer.”
MAHA UK welcomes James Thompson
as new regional sales executive
MAHA UK, a leading provider of workshop equipment, is pleased to announce
the appointment of James Thompson as the company’s newest regional sales
executive. With his extensive ex-perience in the automotive sector and a proven
track record in sales, James brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the
MAHA UK team.
In his role, James will be responsible
for expanding MAHA UK’s presence in
northern regions of the UK, nurturing
relationships with both existing and potential
clients, and promoting MAHA UK’s premium
products and services.
Commenting on his appointment, James
said: “I am thrilled to join the MAHA UK team
and con-tribute to the company’s continued
success. MAHA has an outstanding
reputation for delivering quality garage
equipment, and I am eager to leverage
my skills and experience to drive growth
and build lasting partnerships with our
customers.”
Prior to joining MAHA UK, James gained
valuable experience working in a dealership
environ-ment within a major automotive
manufacturer. His passion for sales and
dedication to customer satisfaction make
him a strong addition to the MAHA UK team.
MAHA UK Managing Director, Neil Ebbs,
said: “We are delighted to welcome
James to MAHA UK. His sales acumen and
commitment to excellence align perfectly
with our company values. We look forward
to working together with James, as we
continue to provide outstanding workshop
solutions to our customers.”
James’s appointment reflects MAHA
UK’s ongoing commitment to delivering
exceptional ser-vice and support to
its clients across the UK. His addition
complements the sales team of Louis
Tunmore and Luke Fuller perfectly, further
strengthening MAHA UK’s position as a
trusted leader in the garage equipment
market.
