6 STYLES OF PAINTING AND LGBT
ARTISTS WHO HAVE USED THEM (PART
ONE OF TWO PARTS)
The world of fine art recognizes 7 major painting
styles from realism to abstract. For this article,
only 3 styles will be reviewed. The remaining
styles will be reviewed in the next issue, along with
lgbtq artists who are recognized as using these
styles. The 7 major painting styles include Realism,
Impressionism, Expressionism and Fauvism,
Abstraction, Abstract, and Photorealism. Because
Realism and PhotoRealism have similarities, this
and the following article for the next issue will
combine photo-realism and realism and add the
category of Pop Art.
Style 1 Pop Art
Pop Art uses what might be considered dull or
boring subjects, however, these images are found
all around in advertising, brand labels, logos, comic
books, etc. Pop Artists used these as topics for
their work and sought to find beauty or value in
the mundane. One artist who brought Pop Art
to the forefront was Andy Warhol. His works are
recognized as examples of Pop Art worldwide.
The Campbell’s Soup cans were his first use of
everyday objects as works of art. Another artist
known for Pop Art and related works is David
Hockney his painting titled “Bigger Splash”
features a Los Angeles area swimming pool with a
background of a mid-century pink house with the
skyline of Los Angeles reflecting in the windows
of the house. These are two examples of many in
the Pop art category.
Style 2 Impressionism
The term Impressionism derived from artists
using light and color to create an essence in their
paintings of an impression of what they wanted
to convey. This style of art originated in the
1860’s coming out of Europe, primarily France
with artists such as Renoir and Monet. One artist
who is not as well known but created numerous
paintings in the impressionist technique is Gustave
Caillobotte. Two of his paintings shown here are
examples of the artist giving impressions of the
figures in the paintings as they interact with the
impression of the environment. The painting,
“The Floor Scrapers” shows workers scraping
up a floor. The muted lighting and the energy of
the workers give an impression of how the scene
might feel.
The painting “The Oarsmen” gives a feeling as if
the viewer is in the boat on a sunny day with the
Oarsmen.
Style 3 Abstraction
Abstract painting began in the early 20th Century
the artist to the viewer. In some ways, all art could
be said to be abstract as it is an interpretation of
the artist of a subject. A few of the gay artists
who created in abstraction include, Ellsworth
Kelly’s career began in World War II in Europe
where he was part of the Ghost Army a unit
consisting of artists and engineers who developed
tactical deception to detract the enemy. Kelly did
drawings and watercolors also during his career
in the military After the war with financial help
from the GI Bill he attended the Boston Museum
School of Fine Arts. He is known for his abstract
paintings and sculptures.
His painting featured
here is titled “Spectrum”
which is a painting of
the color spectrum as
seen in opaque mediums.
Another well-known
abstract artist is William
de Kooning who created paintings based on
figures, landscapes, and still life subjects. His
paintings evoke line, color, and
movement as the example here
where the gestural lines of the
painting could be interpreted
as dancers. Another
contemporary gay artist
Andrew Salgado of which a
previous full article featured his work. Salgado
works with figures and portraits incorporating
multiple colors and shapes into the painting where
the face or figures are still legible but abstracted
from reality. as in the portrait featured here.
somewhat as a protest against more traditional
forms of painting. Abstractionists used color,
form, line, and shape to convey refuting realism
in art instead opting for creating an emotion from
The next issue will
feature cubism,
surrealism, and photorealism.
What is this?
If you know don’t spoil it, read to the end.
Or cheat like you always do. Look for the
upside down jenny
The Internet is crashing?
Recently Norad the Internet watchman
alerted to holes in some areas so large you
could drive a bus through. There have
always been holes but these are big enough
to get missiles through Said Capitan
Conner of the 507 Tactical Airforce
General. Who pointed our incidentally, the
Space men and swabbies missed. Adding
that is why we are number one, but we
probably should have seen the end of the
Internet sooner then predicted. but that
date has not been decided, none the less we
will run out of data space because we are
consuming more and more each day. This
data just sits never to be seen again but we
are digital hoarders.
So here it is, we live in in a world where
the Internet was busier than a one-armed
wallpaper hanger, some one panicked and
sent emergency broadcast message to
everyone. Because that is also where we
are, when a message can be read virtually
to virtually ever person in the world in one
day. The message was clear: delete your
shit or we go down and face the wrath
of a crashed Internet. Why? Because
properly, the digital universe couldn’t
handle the sheer awesomeness of 1.2
million YouTubers simultaneously vying
for attention making ramen using only the
recipe printed on the box..
As rumors swirled faster than a GIF on
steroids, some claimed it was a plot by
alien hackers to disrupt our online lives,
while others insisted it was punishment
for watching too many cat videos. But the
truth was more ridiculous than a dancing
banana meme: the internet’s servers were
on the brink of collapse from the sheer
weight of our online shenanigans.
After the warning The 100 million
YouTubers, stopped unboxing products
and trying out weird challenges, united like
never before. They added to the disaster
with endless virtual chat chains, each one
passing the same urgent message back and
forth to their followers to clear out the
digital cobwebs and save the Internet from
a catastrophic crash. And the obligatory
jokes about Hillary wiping servers with a
cloth.
In a display of online solidarity that would
make even the most seasoned meme lord
proud, people around the globe followed
suit, deleting their caches and clearing
their temp files. The combined efforts
of millions of internet users bought the
servers a precious five days of reprieve, just
to learn it was just an April fools joke
And so, the Internet was not saved at all.
But thanks to the quick thinking and typical
clueless action of its users, they temporarily
crashed their local server.
As for the YouTubers, they were hailed
themselves as heroes of the digital age,
their channels flooded with narcissistic
praise and many new subscribers.
The crash may have been fake, but the
lesson was clear: In the wild world of the
internet, you never know when things
might get a little too crazy.
What is not crazy, California Governor
Gavin Newsom signed AB 2208 into
law, a landmark bill by Assemblymember
Kalra and Senator Becker that sets phase
out dates for compact fluorescent lamps
(CFLs) and linear fluorescent lamps (LFLs)
starting in 2024. Climate, clean air, worker
safety, and public and environmental health
advocates applaud the move to protect
Californians and the planet from the
dangers of mercury containing lamps. But
While we can’t advocate gay cruising in Palm Springs
area. The following tips from our friends at gays-cruising.
com might. Remember you can avoid sexually transmitted
diseases, always use a condom. When finished, remember to
collect everything (condom wrappers, tissues, etc.) and leave
the environment clean. Leave only foot prints!
Leave your valuables at home
In many cruising areas there are malicious people who take
the opportunity to steal valuables. Therefore, when you go to
practice cruising, try not to carry money, jewelry, etc., and if
possible try to be accompanied.
Education and respect above all else
Not everyone in cruising areas is looking for the same thing
as you. If they tell you NO, respect and do not disturb, just as
you’d like to be respected.
Don’t hook up with minors
Remember that it is totally forbidden to mess with children
under 18. Don t trust, Verify that the person you’re flirting
with is of legal age.
Report any attacks
If you ever experience any form of aggression, intimidation,
theft, or extortion while cruising, it’s important to report it to
the local authorities. To be prepared, it’s always a good idea to
gather information about your cruising partner such as their
name, description, and license plate. The Desert Daily Guide
(DDG) has been a strong supporter of various political and
self-care issues relevant to the LGBTQ community, often
presented in publication with bits of humor. However, it’s
crucial to remember that our interest and support for LGBTQ
issues are critical, and many local print magazines are facing
closure. Losing these publications could result in losing an
essential perspective on the local village vibe!
cultures and perspectives can help foster a culture of peace.
Environmental Sustainability: Addressing
environmental issues can help prevent conflicts over resources
and promote long-term peace and stability.
International Cooperation: Building strong
international institutions and promoting cooperation
24
between nations can help address global challenges and
promote peace.
Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding:
Supporting efforts to resolve conflicts and build peace in
conflict-affected areas can help create lasting peace.
Promoting Non-Violent Approaches:
Encouraging non-violent approaches to resolving conflicts
can help reduce violence and promote peace.
Achieving peace in the world is a long-term and ongoing
process that requires the commitment and cooperation of
individuals, communities, and nations.
The statement “War is over if we want it” is a
powerful sentiment that emphasizes the role
of human will and determination in ending
conflicts. It suggests that if people truly
desire peace and are willing to work towards
it, then it is possible to bring an end to war.
This idea aligns with the belief that peace is
not just the absence of war, but a proactive
effort to promote understanding, dialogue,
and cooperation between individuals and
nations. While achieving global peace is a
complex and challenging goal, this statement
encourages individuals and communities to take
responsibility for promoting peace in their own
lives and in the world around them.
One benefit of having no wars over the loss of
profit is the preservation of human life and wellbeing.
In times of war, countless lives are lost
or permanently altered due to physical injuries,
trauma, displacement, and other forms of harm.
Without the devastation of war, societies can
focus their resources and efforts on improving
quality of life, advancing education, healthcare,
infrastructure, and fostering a more peaceful and
prosperous future for all.

Mindfulness and
Meditation
Discover the transformative power of presence,
nurturing peace, clarity, and well-being in every
moment.
Mindfulness and meditation involve
focusing your mind on the present
moment. To begin, find a quiet space
where you can sit or lie down comfortably.
Close your eyes and take a few deep
breaths, then let your breath flow
naturally as you focus on its sensation.
Try to let go of thoughts about the past
or future, and if your mind wanders,
gently bring it back to your breath. As
you practice, you may notice thoughts,
emotions, or sensations arising; simply
observe them without judgment and let
them pass. Aim to practice regularly, even
if it’s just for a few minutes each day, and
be patient with yourself as you explore
these practices.
30

1. Stay Active: Engage in physical activities that you enjoy, such as walking, yoga, or
dancing.
Practice Gratitude: Reflect on the positive aspects of your life and what you’re thankful
for.
2. Connect with Others: Spend time with friends, family, or pets for social support and
companionship.
3. Get Enough Sleep: Aim for a regular sleep schedule and ensure you’re getting
enough restful sleep each night.
4. Eat Well: Fuel your body with nutritious foods to support your overall well-being.
5. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practice mindfulness or meditation to help reduce
stress and promote relaxation.
6. Limit Screen Time: Reduce the time spent on electronic devices and social media to
improve mental well-being.
7. Learn Something New: Engage your mind with new skills or hobbies to stimulate
growth and creativity.
8. Spend Time in Nature: Take a walk outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and natural
surroundings.
9. Express Yourself Creatively: Engage in creative activities such as painting, writing,
or playing music.
10. Set Realistic Goals: Break down larger goals into smaller, achievable tasks to boost
your sense of accomplishment.
11. Seek Professional Help: If you’re struggling with mental health issues, consider
seeking support from a therapist or counselor.
