BEYOND THE OPERATING ROOM:
DR. AL YURVATI’S LIFE AND LEGACY
A surgeon’s tale of love, resilience, and the unseen threads of Fate.
by SAM CARTER
What would you do if you’re at the pinnacle of
your life, love, and career, but things suddenly
take a turn? In this exclusive feature with Writers’
Branding, in partnership with The Reading Glass
Books, Dr. Al Yurvati invites us into the labyrinth
of his experiences, where love, adversity, and
the unrelenting march of time intertwine.
The Soldier. The Surgeon.
The Soul Mate.
In the quiet suburbs of Allentown, Pennsylvania,
where childhood dreams are often stirred, a
young Albert H. Yurvati found himself dreaming.
Remembering back in 8th grade, Dr. Yurvati saw
the acclaimed Michael DeBakey in a magazine
and thought how extraordinary his significance
on medicine is—never thinking he would also
make an impact in the profession 50 years later.
A unique trajectory, starting with the US Army,
Dr. Yurvati not only discovered his passion for
medicine but also found the love of his life, the
ever-beautiful Sharon, during his advanced
medic training for the military. When Sharon
declared [NV], “If you’re not going to become
a doctor, I am not marrying you,” that was when
Dr. Yurvati knew Sharon was the one. She really
saw and changed Dr. Yurvati’s life, inspiring him
to be his best—something Dr. Yurvati never
thought he had in him.
Being an army medic, suturing up in the ER,
cardiothoracic surgery was the epitome of
what he thought to be a great career. And it
turned out to be true! With multiple successful
operations, he defined surgery, now called the
Yurvati procedure. At the pinnacle of his career,
Dr. Yurvati was a 10-year medical professor, was
chair of the Board of Surgery and later executive
director, and published a significant number of
surgery cases. Now an emeritus professor at the
University of North Texas Health Science Center,
Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr.
Yurvati’s career indeed soared to great heights.
Renowned nationally and internationally as
an academic cardiothoracic surgeon, he left a
significant mark on the medical world.
Fast forward to the present, and Dr. Yurvati’s
journey has become one founded in fortitude.
Little did he know that life’s unexpected twists
would soon redefine his purpose and challenge
his resilience. Life truly had its own plans.
From Surgeon to
Caregiver to Patient.
In a cruel twist of fate, Dr. Yurvati’s life took a
sharp turn when his beloved wife, Sharon,
suffered a thrombotic stroke. The seasoned
surgeon transitioned seamlessly into the role
of a caregiver, navigating the challenges of
supporting his soulmate through recovery.
5 | READING GLASS BOOKS
As if the Fates themselves were orchestrating his
narrative, Dr. Yurvati faced another staggering
blow in 2020—a diagnosis of multiple myeloma,
an incurable cancer of the bone marrow. The
surgeon turned caregiver became a patient,
forced to confront the harsh realities of his own
mortality.
A Continuation of Life and Legacy.
When asked about how he plays with the cards
dealt to him, Dr. Yurvati’s positive outlook on
life shines through. “It’s resiliency… Every time
there’s a complication, instead of letting it get
to you, you just [have] to figure out, ‘How am I
going to get over that bump? How am I going
to keep going?’ I think the driving force is also
Sharon—taking care of her. We’re going to be
married 50 years next year. It’s like half a century
of being with somebody, and having that focus
and that being my soulmate, I think that’s kind of
the driving force that makes me want to continue
[to] push.”
story exemplifies the enduring strength of the
human spirit.
With a rollercoaster ride of a life, setbacks did
not hold Dr. Yurvati aback. His situation needed
him to change, and so he had to—it turned out it
was for the better.
“
Take a look and reflect about
who you are, where you are,
what you want to do… If you
hate your job, it’s not worth
doing it, you [have] to change.
And sometimes that’s the
hardest thing—looking at
that, reassessing, and making
a change.
“
Welcome to Dr. Al Yurvati’s journey.
With the advice from one of their clinic’s
psychologists, “You have to have your brain
rethink now that you’re different,” Dr. Yurvati
reinvented himself. When Sharon wrote books,
he was also inspired to publish his own. And so,
with his debut medical memoir, Wet My Hands,
Dr. Yurvati bares his soul, infusing the narrative
with humor, history, and passion. The title, a nod
to a surgical tradition, takes on new meaning as
Dr. Yurvati reflects on the instability of life and
the strength found in wet hands tying knots.
The story does not end with a cancer diagnosis.
Dr. Yurvati’s resilience continues in his literary
expression found in This to Me, a sequel
where he explores deeper into the story of
his life, sharing a heartwarming journey with
Sharon. Looking ahead, Dr. Yurvati hints at a
third book, teasing readers with the promise of
more revelations and reflections. As he plans to
commemorate his 50th wedding anniversary,
we can only anticipate another chapter in the
extraordinary life of Dr. Yurvati—a man whose

A celebration of all species, centrifuged into verse, Litany of the Plants is an exquisite
collection of 52 poems—smug poems, poems expressing gratitude, poems of joy, satire,
appreciation, romance, and rebellion—narrated by a variety of voices. These voices include
a person near senility, a barroom ranter, a confessor, a clown, a bureaucrat, a racist, and
a romantic, while three different travelers narrate the North Dakota poems. There are
Have you ever looked at the stars at night and wondered who you are? Wow, that’s deep
and kind of scary, but it is a question that occasionally arises. Take an adventure with me
across the universe through the Star Dweller’s eyes, a mystical being who roams the cosmos
searching for a friend. Sometimes, life gets a little lonely, and I genuinely think we’re all
looking for someone specific. Although we are all very different from one another, when it
comes down to it, we’re all made of the same stuff.

Dimensions: 6.0 x 9.0 inches
NEW EDITION COMING SOON
A riveting story of a young single mother
providing for and raising her twins; trying to
give the best life she can. Tragedy strikes and
now Karen is at a crossroads. Knowing that
her son’s life hangs in the balance she cannot
make this choice lightly. She will have to live
with the consequences of her decision. There
is pressure all around her but this is a decision
she must make on her own. All the while praying
that she makes the right decision. Does she
take and believe the Wisdom of the Doctors? Or
does she stand on her own and Walk by Faith
and not by Sight?
Mary Albert grew up on a small farm in Central
Illinois with a curiosity for the world. Exploring
the world through youth exchanges and then
finishing her studies in Switzerland, Mary found
out that the more she saw of the world, the more
she wanted to see. She chose the travel and
hospitality industry as a way to feed her hunger
for travel. In the process of traveling, she saw
many of the great and wonderful things that God
put in this world. He gave every place in the
world something special—one just has to open
their eyes and their heart to see it. God also gave
Mary the gift of writing, so she can tell the stories
not only of the places He made but also of the
miracles that He performs in our daily lives. Mary
befriended Renee at an ICCM conference, and
as their friendship grew, Renee started helping
Mary with her faith journey by sharing her own.
THE ENCHANTMENT
OF POETRY II
LADY SARAH PARIS
Genre: Poetry
Publisher: Writers’ Branding LLC
Dimensions: 6.0” x 9.0”
The Enchantment of Poetry II marks an intriguing collaboration between an artist and a poet. Dr.
Georgios D. Kordis, a professor, theologian, and influential artist of his time, created the fine art
drawings. A renowned, world-class iconographer in the Byzantine tradition, Kordis has introduced
surrealistic and impressionistic influences that create amazing images that add to Byzantine art
traditions. In this volume, the works of Kordis are accompanied by the ideologies and scenarios
presented by poetess and muse Lady Sarah Paris. Her poem’s topics range from historical and
religious subjects to romantic and mythical imagery.
Lady Paris’ poetry encompasses her insights, opinions, fantasies, research, and experiences to
realize the depth of the connection between Kordis’ art and her writings. Finding inspiration in the
Master Painter, Lady Paris has written very special poems, songs, and stories referencing these
wonderful fine art treasures. The Enchantment of Poetry brings together two art forms that benefit
from the presence of the other in this enchanting, illustrated collection.

This is a fictional story about animals and people of all kinds living happily together in the
land of Kemerick. Everyone got along until tragedy struck and the camels, rabbits, and cats
became jealous of each other and started fighting. A Sorcerer appeared and demanded that
the animals stop fighting. When they didn’t, he roared back into town and used his magic
sword to change them into an animal that had attributes of all three of them—a camelrabbitcat
or TACTIBBARLEMAC. The tactibbarlemacs were washed away in a flood and lived happily
underground until curious Tacti found his way back to Kemerick and wound up in a house
where he met baby Victor. And the adventures began…
Jan Atkinson is an attorney who has been writing short stories for over
forty years. The concept of a “tactibarrlemac” (camel rabbit cat)
was created while in college. When her grandson, Victor, was
an infant she began entertaining him with stories about the
funny animal named Tacti and his adventures. Jan is a
Baltimore native now living in Raleigh and enjoys
being “Nan,” playing golf, and cheering for her
Maryland sports teams.
