Harmony Day 2024
I recently attended a special Harmony Day Lunch hosted
by the MatruChhaya Indian Women’s Refuge for Domestic
Violence Victims Incorporated at Council’s Domestic and
Family Violence (DFV) Hub. The not-for-profit organisation
is dedicated to providing culturally appropriate counselling
by professional social workers, legal aid services, support projects, art therapy,
cooking demonstrations and mental health assistance with psychologists.
MatruChhaya aims to have a culturally appropriate refuge and accommodation
for women of Indian origin and their children. Participating in Harmony Day
provided an opportunity to connect with people who work in these outreach
services while fostering unity and inclusion in our community.
What will the future hold?
Residents fear Westmead South will lose its identity if 6,600 new homes are built
ELLIE BUSBY
A
draft masterplan for Westmead
South could deliver thousands of new
homes, but residents are concerned it
will ruin the close-knit community.
A planning proposal for 6,600 new homes
near the train station and future Westmead
Metro Station intends to turn Westmead
South into “one of the best connected places
in Sydney”.
But some locals believe it will have a negative
impact on the community they love.
At the latest Extraordinary Cumberland
Local Planning Panel, over 20 residents spoke
out against the proposal, including local
Nalinie Aiyelana.
“The current Council proposal will create an
increase of traffic, congestion, pollution in the
small Westmead South residential area,” she
said.
Safa Majidi, a Westmead South resident
of 13 years, fears the extraordinary level of
community cohesion will be impacted by the
proposed increase in housing density.
“This unique character will be significantly
impacted by the plan to increase medium and
high-density housing,” she said.
“We know that high density developments
often lead to a loss of neighbourhood identity,
which can negatively impact the residents’
sense of belonging and wellbeing, and
compromise quality of life.”
The masterplanned area sits on the south
side of the Railway Corridor, bound by Alexandra
Avenue to the north, Bridge Road to the
west, Great Western Highway to the south,
and Good Street/Mays Hill Precinct to the
east.
According to Cumberland Council papers,
significant investment into public transport
and the transformation of Westmead into
a major health, education and innovation
precinct, provides “impetus for renewal”
within Westmead South.
Under the proposal, residential buildings
would range from eight to 25-storeys, with the
maximum building height to be concentrated
close to public transport stations. It will see a
large part of the suburb re-zoned to high and
medium density residential.
A corridor planned along Hawkesbury Road
would link the two key activity nodes at the
future Westmead Metro Station and the Oakes
Centre – turning the car-dominant thoroughfare
into a ‘high street’ that prioritises active
transport.
Community facilities and new open spaces
are planned, including two new civic plazas
on the Metro Station site and in front of the
Oakes Centre. Open space at a minimum
size of 3,000sqm will also be provided along
Alexandra Avenue together with a commuter
car park.
A Heritage Conservation Area has also been
recommended to be established bound by
Toohey Avenue, Gowrie Crescent, MJ Bennet
Reserve, the south side of Nolan Crescent,
Hawkesbury Road and Austral Avenue.
Peter Alvarez, who spoke on behalf of two
residents, warned the draft proposal in its
current form would have a significant effect
on Westmead South.
“The Westmead South of today will be
very different to the Westmead South of the
future,” he said.
“So what you are in fact planning is a city, not
a suburb.”
19-year-old Bhumika Chauhan spoke about
how the Westmead South provide friendship
to people who feel lonely, particularly migrant
families. She worries this could be lost.
“As migrant families, we experience isolation,
awkwardness and confusion when we
come to this country. We long for community,”
she said.
“If our homes were to be replaced by
multi-storey buildings, I worry that the existing
community will struggle to thrive and
social cohesion will deteriorate.”
Following the meeting, the Cumberland
Local Planning Panel confirmed they
endorsed the proposal.
This means it will now be recommended to
Council that the Westmead South Planning
Proposal be forwarded to the Department of
Planning, Housing and Infrastructure for a
Gateway Determination.
Are music festivals becoming extinct?
How are music festivals getting it so
wrong at the moment?
The cancellation of Splendour In
The Grass is just the latest in a long list of festivals
that have bitten the dust in recent months.
They are no longer attracting the huge numbers
and demand they once were and the sector
appears to be on its knees.
Bus services are an essential part of Sydney’s
public transport system. In a far-flung, car-dependent
city, rail and Metro lines cannot extend
everywhere. It is buses that fill the gaps,
carrying people to jobs and basic services, and
bringing a measure of social inclusion to residents
in disadvantaged, underserved pockets
of the community.
It’s an incredible fact that bus services in
NSW carry 40 per cent of all public transport
passengers, but receive only two per cent of
transport capital expenditure. While franchising
of the delivery of bus services is now
complete across Sydney – and was inherited
by the current NSW government – there is still
a public responsibility to keep the network
updated, better plan and manage essential infrastructure,
and recruit bus drivers and other
operational staff. Current driver shortages are
only part of the way to being redressed.
Over the past year, the government’s Bus
Industry Taskforce has held public consultations
– including in Parramatta, Epping and
Blacktown. It has invited submissions and
survey responses, of which more than 8,000
have been received. While a final report is due
to be published in May, last October’s interim
report identified the key problem.
Namely, that Sydney’s bus network is concentrated
in the eastern and south eastern
suburbs, as well as the lower north shore.
However, there is nothing like the same frequency
around Parramatta – supposed to be
the geographic centre of the city – and it gets
progressively worse further west.
News.............................................................1-9
Business......................................................10
Life & Style............................................11-12
Transforming bus services is a tough challenge
that Sydney must confront. With greater
Sydney approaching a population of 9 million
by 2056, and almost half of all residents expected
to be located around Parramatta and
further west, rebalancing the bus network to
reflect population and employment movements
is simply an unavoidable task.
This will require a step-change in servicing
of Sydney’s north-west and south-west growth
areas, as well as improved interconnections
throughout western Sydney.
Our road network is pretty much finite. At
some point, more efficient use of infrastructure
has to occur through a shift from private
vehicles to public transport. And new housing
supply needs to not only reroute around Metro
(and to a lesser extent) train stations, but
also key bus corridors.
Bus services in Sydney can be roughly divided
into three categories. The first are so-called
rapid routes – a good example is the Northern
Beaches B-Line or T-way connecting Parramatta
with Liverpool and Rouse Hill. These
involve at least some degree of dedicated bus
lines, bus priority and associated infrastructure.
Then there are high-frequency routes.
The government has already begun planning
a Rapid Bus initiative to link the coming Western
Sydney Airport and aerotropolis region
with Penrith, Liverpool and Campbelltown –
and there are good arguments to absolutely
extend this to Parramatta.
Beyond this, our region also needs to establish
high-frequency routes that can upgrade
Entertainment..................................13-21
Business Directory....................22-23
Sport..............................................................24
There’s likely a variety of reasons.
Cost-of-living is a huge part of the reason
people aren’t buying tickets.
But the festival-going generation of a few
years back is also growing up, and time and
comfort suddenly become priorities. Festivals
often rob both of these.
A shift in drinking culture, quality of lineups
and huge costs of drinks and food at the
events are also likely contributing factors.
It would seem like the only survivors will be
festivals with truly unique line-ups, big names
that you haven’t seen in years or would be unlikely
to see again for some time.
I’m keen to know what you think is behind
the collapse of the sector. Get in touch!
Parramatta must get on the buses
into the rapid bus routes of the future. Some
mentioned by the Bus Taskforce interim report
as being on the radar within the next five
years include the 550 (Parramatta to Macquarie
Park via Carlingford and Epping), the
545 (also to Macquarie Park via Dundas Valley
and Eastwood) and the 525 (Parramatta to
Strathfield via Olympic Park).
In the first two cases, residents are paying the
price for the failure of successive governments
to establish connections between Parramatta
and Epping. Meanwhile, even as the current
NSW government moves to lock in Stage 2
of Parramatta Light Rail, it has always been
a head scratcher to me why huge population
centres like Parramatta and Wentworth Point
are not connected by bus. There is also an urgent
need to reinstate the express bus service
from Parramatta to the city (the old M52).
Beyond this, Transport for NSW is proposing
an extension of local bus services in parts
of Cumberland. Pemulwuy, Wentworthville,
Greystanes, Merrylands, Granville and Auburn
are all areas that warrant additional offpeak,
evening and weekend services.
In coming years, the bus policy agenda is
likely to be busy. It includes transitioning the
bus fleet to zero-emissions technology, and
accelerating this rollout in Western Sydney.
Better real-time information for passengers,
including signage and apps that actually work.
And navigator aides for bus drivers to better
master their routes (no more gnarly corners).
Parramatta needs to be at the centre of this
revolution given we’re at the centre of Sydney.
Helping sick kids get better
Nearly $400,000 raised at Walk for Kids with Cancer event
ELLIE BUSBY
Over 880 people laced up their walking
shoes and hit the pavement at this
year’s Walk for Kids with Cancer
event, raising vital funds for cancer patients
at Westmead Children’s Hospital.
An annual fundraising event run by Sydney
Children’s Hospitals Foundation (SCHF), the
recently held 2024 Walk For Kids with Cancer
event brought participants together from all
over the state to walk in solidarity in their
shared fight against childhood cancer.
Starting from The Rocks, the walkers headed
north over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and
completed a 24km path to Balgowlah Heights
on the Northern Beaches.
The starting group was then joined by a
second group of walkers in Mosman, who
completed the final 10km to the finish line, to
raise money for those children and families
impacted by a cancer diagnosis.
At the time of print, nearly $400,000 had
been raised through the event.
All funds raised will go towards helping
ensure sick kids and their families continue
to receive extraordinary care at the Cancer
Centre for Children at The Children’s Hospital
at Westmead, as well as at the Sydney Children’s
Hospital in Randwick.
CEO of SCHF Kristina Keneally congratulated
the efforts of the fundraisers.
SCHF staff at the Walk for Kids with Cancer event.
“Through the power of community, we are
achieving incredible feats and, together, we
can make a real difference to the lives of kids
facing cancer,” she added.
“For some kids, childhood is far from what
it should be. Instead of playdates, there are
appointments. Instead of sleepovers, there
are stays. Instead of firsts, there can be lasts.
“No child should have to go through this, but
those who do deserve our all.”
Each year, 1,000 families in Australia receive
the devastating news their child has cancer,
with three Australian kids losing their battle
with cancer every week.
Thanking those who participated in the
event, Keneally added that the outstanding
result would not have been possible without
the support of those involved in the Movement
of Many campaign and the generosity of
donors.
“Thank you to everyone who laced up their
walking shoes to go all in for kids’ health and
Walk for Kids with Cancer participants cross
the finish line.
to the Western Sydney Wanderers for joining
us and making the day extra special for the
many supporters, donors, patients, and
families who walked for kids with cancer,” she
said.
In its 17th year, SCHF’s hallmark community
event has raised over $2 million for oncology
patients across NSW and beyond.
Walk for Kids with Cancer will return
in March 2025. Donations are still being
collected at www.walkforkidscancer.org.au.
21 demountables to go as
upgrades begin at local school
ELLIE BUSBY
The shovels are officially in the ground
as work begins on the multi-million
dollar upgrade of Darcy Road Public
School.
The Wentworthville school is now one step
closer to replacing 21 demountables with
permanent buildings and modern classrooms,
with the NSW Government turning
the first sod last week.
Along with new classrooms, the project also
plans to support the growing local community
with a new library, canteen, administration
facilities, a refurbished school hall, an extension
of the school’s car park and an upgrade to
core facilities.
Landscaping, public domain and other
ancillary works are also set to be delivered as
part of the upgrade.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education
and Early Learning Prue Car welcomed the
commencement of the local school’s major
overhaul.
“I am delighted to see works begin here at
Darcy Road Public School – where this school
is set to receive a massive boost as we significantly
upgrade their facilities,” she said.
“Students here have been learning in
demountable classrooms for years, and it is
fantastic to see western Sydney children will
Prue Car with Darcy Road Public School students and Principal
Trudy Hopkins. Photo: Naomi Chilcott.
soon be learning in permanent classrooms.
“Our Government is committed to fighting
for students across New South Wales, so every
child in the state can access a high quality
education.”
This milestone in the project’s development
makes it the 23rd major public education
project started since NSW Labor first formed
Government a year ago.
The State Government has committed $769
million to build 100 new public preschools in
areas “where they are needed most”.
Other local schools where major works have
begun in the last 12 months include Carlingford
West Public School and Cumberland
High School.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the NSW
Government is committed to rebuilding the
essential services and addressing the school
infrastructure backlog.
“This is why we are making a record investment
for urgently needed new and upgraded
schools across the state, including Darcy
Road,” he said.
“This targeted investment in growing
communities will ensure every student in
NSW has access to a world class public education,
no matter where they live.”
A temporary school opened at the end of last
year to support Darcy Road students throughout
the upgrade.
Early pre-construction works have been
underway at the site ahead of the start of main
construction works.
The upgrades are expected to all be complete
by the end of 2025.
Australia, Maxibon Peanut Jams with Butter
one of the most iconic duos ever to grace
the planet; peanut butter and jam. “We are so
excited about sharing our revamped creation
with Maxibon fans across Australia. We’ve
had more requests to bring this flavour back
than any other, so at a time when sandwich
delis and ice cream sandwiches are buzzing
across Australia, the timing felt right,” said.
Maxibon Brand Manager, Stephanie Chosich.
Δ Farewell, road trip eats: The Oporto and
Red Rooster restaurants on the M4 Motorway
have now officially closed, bringing to an end
their long reigns at the location. McDonald’s
is also closing, with the site being completely
refurbished and redesigned. Hungry Jacks
will now be on both sides of the motorway.
Δ Shapes go gluten free: Arnott’s has
announced the latest additions to its gluten
free range – Gluten Free Jatz and Gluten Free
Barbecue Shapes. Available nationwide from
Δ Parra ferry arrives in Sydney: The first
new Australian built Parramatta River Class
ferry has just arrived in Sydney after passing
the ultimate sea test, crossing the Bass Strait.
This is the first of seven new Northern Beaches-designed
vessels being built by Hobartbased
ship builder Richardson Devine
Marine. The next ferry in the new Parramatta
River Class fleet is just a few weeks behind
and is expected to commence builder’s
trials in early May. The seven new vessels
will replace the RiverCat and SuperCat
vessels which will be retired after 30 years
of service. Each vessel in the new Parramatta
River Class fleet will have a 200-person
capacity, while using 40 per cent less diesel
and are also future proofed for conversion to
electric propulsion when the technology and
network infrastructure become available.
Δ Have your say: City of Parramatta
is inviting residents to have their say on
proposed changes to planning controls for
263-281 Pennant Hills Road, Carlingford
(formerly known as 263-273 Pennant Hills
Road and 18 Shirley Street). The proposed
changes seek to allow for an increase of 197
units, a 600 square-metre increase in retail
floor space and a new central park. The draft
proposal on exhibition will reconfigure the
existing R4 High Density Residential and RE1
Public Open Space zones. It will also increase
the maximum height of building control
from 11-storeys on the Pennant Hills Road
frontage to 29-storeys and from 9-storeys on
the remainder of the R4 zoned portion of the
site to 18-storeys. To find out more, visit the
This week Mercury turns retrograde
until April 25, so it’s time to do anything
with an ‘re’ in front of it – revise, rehearse,
review, remember, return, recover and/
or reconnect. Especially in areas involving
travel, education, communication
and local community projects. Your
mantra for the week is from birthday
great, environmentalist Jane Goodall,
“Every individual matters. Every individual
has a role to play. Every individual
makes a difference.”
Creativity is especially high on
Wednesday/Thursday. And with Mars
transiting through your sign, it’s time to
assert your independence. But expect
some frustrations and restrictions along
the way, as Mercury turns retrograde
until April 25. Clever Fish will be patient,
persuasive and persistent – especially
involving finances and business matters.
Your motto is from this week’s birthday
great, movie icon Bette Davis, “The key
to life is accepting challenges.”
This week Venus hooks up with
Neptune, and Mercury starts reversing
through your sign. So you’re extra susceptible
to confusing misunderstandings,
dubious suggestions and false flattery. Be
discerning about who’s advice you take
and make sure your plans are grounded
in reality. Don’t let fair-weather friends
lead you up the primrose path to trouble!
If you’re a smart Ram, you’ll plan your
week carefully and choose your close
confidantes wisely.
Prosperity planet Jupiter is jumping
through your sign until May 25. But are
you making the most of this positive
once-in-every-12-years placement?
It’s your time to shine Taurus – to show
the world what you are truly capable
of. So your motto for the moment is
from birthday great, writer and activist
Maya Angelou, “My mission in life is not
merely to survive, but to thrive. And to do
so with some passion, some compassion,
some humour, and some style.”
The Sun, Mercury and Venus stimulate
your peer group zone, so it’s important
to support and encourage your friends.
But with Mercury (your ruling planet)
turning retrograde until April 25, make
sure you communicate clearly and sort
out any misunderstandings early. Fast
thinking and creative strategies will help
you solve problems and alleviate stress.
Your motto is from birthday great, singer
Billie Holiday, “If I don’t have friends,
then I ain’t got nothing.”
Many busy Crabs will burn the
midnight oil, as creativity bites and inspiration
strikes. International connections
could be particularly beneficial and
your involvement with a group, club or
organisation has others looking to you
for innovative ideas. But – with Mercury
reversing through your career zone –
resist the temptation to sidestep, confuse
or snooze at work! Use your networking
skills to drum up support, and don’t be
afraid to ask experts for help.
With your ruler the Sun, Mercury and
Venus all transiting through fellow fire
sign Aries, you’re feeling feisty and ready
for adventure. But with Mercury turning
retrograde (until April 25) you could also
feel like a ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’! Remember
that hubris often comes before a fall,
so the buzz word for this week is humility.
Clever Lions will be kinder towards
other people, and more tolerant of their
individual idiosyncrasies and particular
circumstances.
Mercury (your patron planet) turns
retrograde which can mean frustrations,
delays and power plays, especially at
work or while travelling. Perhaps a
project is stalled, a person is plotting, or
a domestic appliance (or your car) breaks
down. Avoid stressing and vexing Virgo!
Aim to be proactive rather than reactive.
As writer (and birthday great) Maya
Angelou reminds us, “If you don’t like
something, change it. If you can’t change
it, change your attitude.”
With the Sun, Venus and Mercury
(which turns retro on Monday) visiting
your relationship zone, it’s important to
nurture and cherish your nearest and
dearest. You could also lend a hand to a
friend or relative who is sick, experiencing
financial trouble or recovering from
a broken heart. The best day of the week
is Wednesday, when the Venus/Neptune
link highlights romance, compassion
and creativity. So surround yourself with
love, beauty and good vibes!
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
On Monday night Mercury starts
reversing through your wellbeing and
work zone, so it’s a suitable week to revise
your daily diet and fitness routine, as you
choose healthier food options and a form
of exercise that you enjoy. Plus – when it
comes to your job – it’s time to catch up
on the backlog of unfinished projects
and overflowing paperwork. With proactive
Mars in your friendship zone, you’re
keen to have a catch-up lunch or movie
night with your besties.
This week the Sun, Mercury and
Venus are all transiting through fellow
fire sign Aries, which will boost your
energy and enthusiasm – but also your
blunt and tactless side. And Mercury
turns retrograde on Monday night (until
April 25). So close relationships will be
complicated, and communication will
be increasingly tricky – especially with
your partner, potential partner, children
and/or friends. Smart Sagittarians will
slow down, shut up, listen and learn!
Mercury turns retrograde on Monday
night (London time) which can mean
delays, cancellations and plenty of frustrations
– especially at home. Perhaps a
DIY project is stalled, a family member
is slowing progress, or an essential
domestic appliance breaks down. Calm
down Capricorn – aim to be proactive
rather than reactive. Be particularly
careful what you say to a stressed family
member. If in doubt then be extra
discreet, zip your lips and say nothing!
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
CIRCUS
WITH A
TWIST!
CASSIDY PEARCE
Jake Silvestro has been working with the
‘Fruities’ at The Flying Fruit Fly Circus
for three years, yet the majority of his
time has been spent directing one show
– ‘Tempo’.
“The first version of the show, we made in
2021, and did a little 20-minute version of the
show. Then, in 2022, we extended that out and
we did a schools tour and a trip to the Sydney
Opera House,” he said.
‘Tempo’ is a unique show for the young performers
involved, who are all participating in
Australia’s only full-time circus training program
for students aged eight to 19.
Though Silvestro said he always encourages
the students to have other creative outlets, this
one in particular capitalises on their musical
abilities.
“It’s a circus show that’s all based around a
grand piano,” he said.
“We were gifted the prop from a theatre company
in Melbourne, and we decided that we
were going to make a show that was all acrobatics
combined with music.”
However, with plenty of skill among the
bunch, Silvestro noted that this hasn’t been a
particular challenge.
“We’ve got a couple of really talented cast
members who are also musicians, so about
half of the show is live music, and the other
half is pre-recorded music from our amazing
composer Ania Reynolds, who is touring with
the show as well,” he said.
“It really just leans into the larrikin attitude
of The Flying Fruit Fly Circus. It’s a very funny,
very acrobatic, really dynamic show, but it
also incorporates the multi-disciplinary ability
of these young people. It’s really inspiring.”
It is also a homage to what’s been a tradition
in Australian circus for many years.
“In other new circus forms, like Circus Oz
when they were touring, they would often
have not just the company band, but the acrobatic
ensemble would also be playing instruments,
and that’s something that I think is a
really important, key cornerstone in Australian
circus, and something that we’re trying to
continue that legacy with this cast,” he said.
For anyone who has seen the show prior,
Silvestro assured that this iteration is all new,
focusing on the skillset of the current ensemble.
“Between the run that we’re doing this year,
and the run that we did in 2022, we’ve actually
had half the cast change over, because the kids
have graduated from school,” he said.
“We really try to support the unique skills of
the kids that come in, so for example this time
around in the show we’ve got a trapeze act that
wasn’t previously in there, and we’ve got a teeterboard
act that’s a little bit different to what
we’ve done in the past.”
‘Tempo’ is coming to Riverside Theatres in
Parramatta these school holidays, and promises
a fun hour for all.
“The show doesn’t have any dialogue, so
there’s no language barrier, which I think is a
really great thing,” he said.
“It’s all about music, it’s all about rhythm,
and it’s all about the charismatic energy of
these young people.
“They basically just run laps around the
stage for the whole hour, and show off their
amazing tricks.”
‘Tempo’ will be on at Riverside Theatre
in Parramatta on Tuesday, April 16 and
Wednesday, April 17. Tickets start at $29.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
Ê Exciting news for fans of ‘NCIS: Sydney’,
with the local Paramount+ series renewed for
a second season. The first international iteration
of the global ‘NCIS’ franchise outside
of the US, the series is officially Australia’s
most-watched local series on Paramount+.
Having only just found their feet, in season
two, the NCIS agents will square off against a
much more powerful adversary, threatening
the very stability of the region . . . and the
team itself. I must say I had never seen one
episode of any ‘NCIS’ series before this came
around, but I enjoyed ‘Sydney’ immensely.
If you haven’t seen it, it’s a really good watch
and you’ll enjoy spotting all the local filming
locations too.
Ê Still on renewals, and ‘The Bear’ – the
Emmy-winning juggernaut – has been
renewed for a fourth season. The Disney+
series hasn’t even aired season three, but
multiple sources suggest it’s been picked up
for a fourth season already. It’s certainly great
news for the cast and fans alike.
Parramatta.
The personal stories of migration, strength,
sporting achievements and volunteering
in the Parramatta community are being
celebrated through a brand new exhibition –
‘Community Love’.
Open until June 29 at PHIVE, ‘Community
Love’ is an interactive exhibition that features
photographs of 18 local artists, educators,
business owners, social entrepreneurs,
conservationists, and volunteers.
Along with checking out the selection of
photos, visitors will also be able to find out
more about each of the Parramatta locals by
scanning QR codes to see interviews, videos
and blogs.
One of the people captured in the series
of photos is Tahera Nassrat, a self described
“refugee girl turned boss lady,” who moved
to Australia almost 19 years ago after fleeing
Afghanistan fo lowing the Taliban coming to
power.
Now a tax accountant and business
coach, Nassrat founded the Afghan Peace
Foundation in 2019 to help refugees and
immigrants lead self-su ficient lives. She said
it’s Parramatta that has made her who she is
today.
“Refugee girls from Afghanistan, firs thing
that comes to our mind ‘you are an Afghan
girl, you can’t do it’,” she said.
“In Parramatta, I say, I can do this. You
need to live the life of Parramatta, you need
to breathe the air of Parramatta, it makes you
feel confident.
“It makes you feel [like] who you want to be.”
Merrylands woman who left her two
has been fined $1000.
Maryam Hosseini, 33, fronted Parramatta
Local Court last week charged with ‘leaving
children in a motor vehicle, causing emotional
distress’.
On December 28, 2022, Hosseini left a
vehicle while she went into Woolworths in
Granvi le. The court heard that they were in
the car for at least 20 minutes before police
were alerted by a concerned witness.
According to police, the front and rear
windows were down about an inch. They say
they managed to force a window open, unlock
the doors and ca l an ambulance to assis the
children who were sweating, flushed and
appeared to be dehydrated.
Hosseini told police that “she had to
FOOTY’S
BACK!
After the stinging loss to Penrith in last year’s
Grand Final, the Eels return to the field this
week looking to go one better in season 2023.
take her that long”. She further stated that it
was her first time leaving the children in the
vehicle unattended.
Hosseini, with the assistance of a Dar interpreter,
pleaded guilty a the earliest available
opportunity.
She was represented by a lawyer who asked
Magistrate Kate Thompson to consider giving
her client a Community Correction Order
without conviction.
The court heard that Hosseini has no prior
criminal record and is otherwise a person
Nathan Taylor reports on page 32
of good character. However, the Magistrate
expressed concerns over leaving children
unattended at any time, let alone during “the
height of summer”.
She told the court that there needs to be
general deterrence so other good and caring
parents do not take the same shortcut in the
future.
“The consequences can be devastating,”
Magistrate Thompson said.
Hosseini was convicted of the single offence
and fined $1000.
Supercars to race under lights
NATHAN TAYLOR
In a huge win for local motor
racing fans, Supercars will
finish under lights on the
Sunday evening of the 2024
Sydney SuperNight with the race
start and finish time shifted back
an hour to take advantage of
twilight racing.
Saturday’s race under lights
in Sydney has become one of
the most anticipated events on
the calendar, and in 2024 the
July event will feature a twilight
Sunday race that will finish under
lights.
While the timings of the track
schedule is still to be confirmed,
Supercars Head of Television
Nathan Prendergast said it’s great
news to be finishing under lights
twice at the event this year.
“Night racing at Sydney Motorsport
Park has become one of the
highlights of the year, for fans
and for viewers watching at home
from around the globe,” he said.
“We believe this decision
improves the overall quality of the
on-track show and will bring fans
fireworks at Sydney Motorsport
Park as the winners cross the
finish line in both races.”
Formats for the 2024 Sydney
SuperNight will remain as
planned, with a 90-minute
practice session on the
Friday of the event,
followed by Qualifying
and a Top Ten Shootout
on Saturday, prior to
Saturday night’s 200km
