Leadership
SD2
EMPOWERING
TOMORROW’S STEM
LEADERS TODAY
At San Diego
Squared (SD2),
their mission
is to empower
tomorrow’s
STEM leaders
today.
They connect
underrepresented
students to the power
of science, technology,
engineering and math
(STEM) by providing
them with access to
education, mentorship,
and resources to lead
the talent workforce.
Co-founders Bill
Rastetter and H.
Puentes founded
SD2 inspired
by the principles of belonging,
connectedness, empathy and
authenticity. The two recognized their
shared passion to bridge cultural
gaps and create a sense of belonging
for underrepresented students in the
workforce.
“In today’s STEM workforce,
belonging is missing,” Rastetter
shared with GB Magazine. “Diversity
and inclusion are important parts
to the equation, but alone are not
sufficient. If we can empower Black,
Latinx, and Indigenous students
to know that they belong in STEM,
14 GBSAN.COM | JANUARY 2023
then we will have achieved a
tremendous amount.”
SD2 is built on four pillars:
Collaborate: SD2 is here to give
students their best shot at their
brightest future. Their network
of advocates and community
leaders supports students in
building a roadmap to success.
Disrupt: SD2 are innovators
at heart and disruptors of the
status quo. They believe real change calls for a creative approach.
Act: Together, we have the power, the people, and the platform to change
the face of STEM. SD2 exists to deliver real, measurable results.
Represent: SD2 is here to empower a community of leaders and mentors
that inspire a new path and a model for success.
SD2 engages these four pillars through the following programs: Community
Activation focused on creating interactive events that empower youth, STEM
professionals and the community; Squared Fellows program is a long-term
mentorship program for underrepresented high school students interested in
STEM; Squared Scholars program provides college scholarships paired with
year-long mentorships; Squared Interns program connects diverse college
students with paid internship opportunities at STEM-driven companies.
To learn more or get involved, visit www.sd2.org.

La misión de San
Diego Squared
(SD2) es la de
empoderar a los
líderes del mañana
pertenecientes a STEM.
Si
podemos empoderar a los estudiantes negros, latinos e
indígenas a entender que pertenecen a STEM, habremos
logrado mucho.”
SD2 se construyó sobre cuatro bases:
Colaboración: SD2 existe para brindarle a los
estudiantes la mejor
oportunidad para
su futuro. Su red
de defensores y
líderes comunitarios
están presentes
para apoyar a los
estudiantes en la
construcción de un
camino exitoso.
Perturbación: SD2
son innovadores
natos y perturbadores del status quo. Creen que los
verdaderos cambios necesitan enfoques creativos.
with companies like San Diego Gas & Electric® (SDG&E) seeing success with their Inspiring
Future Leaders (IFL) charitable giving initiative. The initiative offers grants to local nonprofit
organizations that inspire students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to
explore the world of STEM from Kindergarten through college. This collaboration cultivates
future leaders through mentoring, leadership and character development and college preparation.
been committed to culturally
and economically uplifting
African Americans and those
of African ancestry. As a part of
this objective, the Links Achiever
Program has focused on college
preparation since its inception,
with this year’s theme being
“Energy.” Providing emphasis
on mentorship,
peer support in
a collaborative
environment,
relationship
building and career
exposure, this
leadership program
aims to recognize
black high school
senior men who
have distinguished
themselves in
academics,
athletics, the
arts, or community service, and are preparing to enter
the workforce. The Links Achiever Program has been
recognized on a local, regional and national level for its
excellence in programming and sustainability.
Building on nearly 30 years of success with the awardwinning
Achiever Program, in 2014 The San Diego
Links Chapter launched year-round STEM exploration
opportunities for younger students with the Links 2 STEM
Program. The focus of Links 2 STEM is to address the
significant under‐representation
of persons of color, especially
women and African Americans,
pursuing college degrees in STEM
fields. The program accepts 35
African American students in fourth
to eight-grade from across San
Diego, concentrating on subjects
ranging from laboratory science to
computer programming, robotics
and even hosts field trips. Members
meet bi-weekly on Saturdays for
their curriculum,
mentoring and
STEM projects,
which involve
many unique
components.
The seventhgrade
curriculum
includes robotics
instruction, giving
students hands on
experience with
the guidance of
professionals in the
STEM community
and the chance
for students to
design actual rockets and build solar
cars. In 2020, the San Diego Links
Chapter established the local San
Diego National Society of Black
Engineers (NSBE) Junior chapter,
so that these students could take
part in technical competitions at the
local, state, and national level.
Of the 15 high school graduates
surveyed from their previous program
cycle, 14 graduates are currently
enrolled in college courses, and 11
graduates selected a major in a STEM discipline. The
Links, Inc. continuously partners with other STEM nonprofits
and opportunities that will allow their students
to connect with scholarships, internships, and further
exposure to career pathways.
It is safe to say the future looks bright for The Links, Inc.
as they play such a critical role in helping develop our
next generation of leaders and bridge the gaps in STEM
representation, equity, and achievement.
Arts
San Diego Ballet
ENRICHING THE COMMUNITY
San Diego Ballet (SDB) mission is,
“to entertain, enrich, and excite
its diverse audience through
imaginative presentations of
quality classical and contemporary
dance.” It delivers its mission with
professional level performances
and through education and
outreach directly in communities.
Their dedication to the community speaks to their
‘enrich’ portion of their mission. For over 10 years,
SDB has provided free classes to students at the
San Diego Library’s Performance Annex in City
Heights, San Diego’s most diverse neighborhood.
Students not only get access to classes, they
also become part of the art form. Students are led
through journaling exercises that lead to improv and
creative moments so that ballet is something they
can do and create.
Students also get exposure to live professional
dance in two ways. One is that the company
members of SDB come to them and perform in
a special concert involving the students for their
families and local community members. The other, is
coming to SDB’s fully staged productions for a real
night out at the theater. Next up, students will attend
SDB’s Romeo and Juliet at the Conrad in La Jolla
February 17th and 18th and get an opportunity for a
backstage tour and Q & A session with the dancers.
Whether or not these students choose a
professional pathway in the arts, SDB hopes that
it is doing its part in helping to develop lifelong
advocates for the arts in the San Diego region.
Conchita Gonzalez
ELEVATING THE WELLNESS EXPERIENCE
BY: NICHOLE NAOUM
In recent
years,
modern
health
management
has evolved
from an
industry
over reliant on
transactional
practices to one
that prioritizes
preventative
care and mental
health. For that reason, wellness centers have become
a culturally relevant force, influencing how consumers
manage their health, stress and work life balance.
For Conchita Gonzalez, the decision to open Lua
Wellness Center in San Diego was motivated not only
Conchita
Gonzalez
by her own battle
with lupus, but
the desire to help
others achieve a
greater quality of
life. “Living with
an autoimmune
disease and
leading a
functional life
inspired me to
share what has
actually worked for
me and made me
feel better,” she says. “I am also continuously looking into
all the available new technologies and trying them first
myself to make sure they perform as promised. If they
help me and contribute to my wellbeing, I then will feel
comfortable enough to bring them into Lua.”
28 GBSAN.COM | JANUARY 2023

Conchita was
diagnosed
with lupus at
an early age
and began
a lifelong
journey
testing
different
treatments
to see what
would help
her keep her
symptoms
in check.
What worked
best was a
combination
of several
different
alternative
therapies
designed to
complement
and support
traditional
medicine.
This helped
give her
the tools
to build a
platform from
where her
body could
properly
function.
Conchita Gonzalez Perez with her sons
Emilio and Bruno Perez at the Lua
Wellness Center Grand Opening
Now, Conchita enjoys helping Lua members lower their
stress levels and increase their overall quality of life. She
believes that the quality of care should be prioritized over
quantity. “When people are alert and have a clear mind,
they can perform at their peak,” she shares. Services
offered at Lua Wellness Center range from bio-feedback,
restore sessions, and infrared saunas, to LipoMax and
HydraFacials.
But the area
where Lua really
shines is in
stress reduction.
“Our bodies
and organs
work in the
same manner
as batteries do.
Our cells lose
their charge
and need to be
recharged in
order to function
properly,” she
adds.
When it comes to
what separates
Lua from other
wellness centers,
Conchita says she
wants to ensure
her clients can
maintain optimum
health and achieve
lasting results.
“We make sure we
respect the body
and its natural
rhythm, and we
have an inside out
beauty approach
in everything we
do. We accomplish
this by resetting
the cells, releasing stress, supporting the central nervous
system, and thus, allowing the person to look and feel
their best.”
With our fast-paced, modern lives, it is easy for things to
get hectic. Luckily, the opening of Lua Wellness Center
has given people the opportunity to relax and take a break
from it all.
Health
Go Red for Women
San Diego Circle of Red
Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s
(AHA) signature initiative to raise awareness that heart
disease is women’s greatest health threat and to
empower them to take action to lower their risk.
Since 2004, Go Red for Women has had a profound
impact on women’s health and continues to be a
champion for women. To remove barriers to good
heart health and well-being, Go Red for Women raises
awareness among women, empowers women to take charge of their health,
engages more women in research and STEM and addresses inequities in
access and quality of care.
It is not just about wearing red. It is not just about sharing heart-health facts. It
is about all women standing together with Go Red for Women - because 1 in 3
women die from heart disease. And losing even one woman is too many.
36 GBSAN.COM | JANUARY 2023

This year AHA is asking women to Be The Beat
where ever you are. They want women everywhere
to reclaim their heart healthy rhythm. They want
to keep the beat going. They want women to
turn up the tempo, to set a new goal, to remind
their loved ones that small actions build up to big
changes. After all, good health is a journey. It is
not a destination.
As Go Red approaches 20 years of making an
impact and being a leading trusted voice for
women’s heart health, their charge remains clear:
continue to empower women across the globe to
join us in the fight against their greatest health threat.
New this year, San Diego is amplifying the
importance of females in STEM related fields with
the addition of STEM Goes Red. The program draws
from the American Heart Association’s strong legacy
of science, education, and discovery to help propel
young women into rewarding careers in STEM.
We must develop a pipeline of innovators who will
develop the research, technology and innovations
that will eliminate heart disease and ensure health
equity in our communities. And it starts right here.
Circle of Red
The American Heart Association and its supporters,
including the Circle of Red giving society, have been
relentless in their pursuit to raise awareness and
fund life-saving research and opportunities, much
of which is studied and performed right here in San
Diego. Circle of Red is an influential group of women
dedicated to supporting the mission and work of the
American Heart Association, San Diego Division.
Music
THE NATION’S ARTS OASIS THROUGH COVID
On July 11th, 2020, the United
States was still in the thick
of the COVID pandemic.
Arts organizations had been
shuttered for months and artists
across the country had lost
both their means of expression
and source of income. Yet, it
was on that day that San Diego would begin to earn its
reputation as an oasis for arts-starved audiences and
artists, with access to live performance and live music in
38 GBSAN.COM | JANUARY 2023
a manner unprecedented in the rest of the United States.
On that day, Mainly Mozart became the country’s
first major arts organization to perform live music in
front of live audiences since the pandemic began. As
was first reported by Newsweek and then by the Wall
Street Journal, the evening was a socially distanced
drive-in concert performed at the Del Mar Fairgrounds,
with an octet made up of principal players from the
Los Angeles Philharmonic and San Diego Symphony.
Tickets were offered free of charge: Mainly Mozart’s
gift to arts-starved San Diegans.

The enthusiasm and demand were tangible. From stage,
San Diego Symphony concertmaster Jeff Thayer shared
with GB Magazine what an emotional moment it was
for him; “I cannot tell you how much it means to all of
us to be on this stage. For four months we have been
unable to perform, to do what we have spent our lives
doing.” Through
the generosity of
its donors, what
was planned as
a one-off concert
became a nearly
thirty-concert
series of drivein
concerts that
stretched through
April 2021.
The San Diego
Opera would
soon follow suit
with its own
drive-in series,
and would go
on to perform
California’s first
live opera
post-COVID.
San Diego
Opera’s
General
Director
David Bennett
shared, “The
innovation
and creativity
demonstrated
in Mainly
Mozart’s
drive-in
concerts have
served as an
inspiration
to me, as
a fellow
arts leader.
Mainly Mozart has shown that with careful planning we
can come together as a community, safely, to enjoy live
performances during this challenging time.”
One year later, in June 2021, Mainly Mozart was back to
performing in person, sans cars. Audiences responded
in a huge way. Mainly Mozart’s average attendance
grew nearly 600% and its online following grew 1700%
compared to pre-pandemic figures.
A San Diego institution for more than 30 years, Mainly
Mozart is best known for its annual All-Star Orchestra
Festival.
Every June,
concertmasters
and principal
players from
the world’s top
orchestras -
including the New
York Philharmonic,
Cleveland
Orchestra,
Chicago
Symphony,
Los Angeles
Philharmonic,
Philadelphia
Orchestra, Israel
Philharmonic, and
dozens more - all
gather together to
perform under
the baton of
Music Director
Michael
This summer,
the Mainly
will split
between two
venues: the
Science
Echazarreta Guest of
Honor at Fleet Gala
Katya Echazarreta, the
first Mexican-born
woman to travel to
space, has become
an international
inspiration for young
people pursuing their
science dreams.
Echazarreta will be
the Fleet Science
Center’s Guest of
Honor at its 50th
Anniversary Gala on
Saturday, April 15.
The 27-year-old
electrical engineer was chosen for
the Space for Humanity initiative
to fly to space with the Blue
Origin NS-21, as a Space for
Humanity Ambassador in June
2022. She credits the Fleet with
piquing her interest, “The Fleet
really is what started this journey
toward space for me.”
As an elementary school student
in the South Bay, Echazarreta
visited the Fleet on a school
field trip and participated in a simulated space mission,
she shared with GB Magazine. “That was one of the first
times I had felt like I belonged. I felt like I knew what I was
Touch down
Katya
Echazarreta
doing.” She explains
that she was so
excited to tell her
classmates and
the Fleet facilitators
about Mars. “I was
telling everybody,
‘You guys are going
to see that we’re
going to find that
there was water on
Mars,’” she says. At
that time, this fact
had not yet been
proved.
That field trip was
not the end of her
involvement with the
Fleet. While a City
College student,
she volunteered at
the Fleet and paid
it forward to San
Diego County children who were
as excited about STEM as she
had been.
“Each year the Fleet connects
more than 120,000 youth to the
power of science,” notes Fleet
President and CEO Steve Snyder.
“Katya is an inspiration to them,
and we are proud to have her as
our Honorary Guest for the 50th
Anniversary Gala.”
The Fleet is grateful to community
members like Echazarreta, who help extend our mission -
to connect everyone to the power of science - to the next
generation.
“Katya inspira a
Kayla Valencia
ADVANCING SOUTHWEST AIRLINE’S CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP
AND OUTREACH EFFORTS
At Southwest
Airlines, we strive
to be not just an
airline, but your neighbor. No community
makes it easier to achieve that mission than San
Diego. America’s Finest City is well named, not
just for the natural beauty of the surroundings, but
truly embodied by the kind, passionate, welcoming
residents of the area. For the past several years, I’ve
had the privilege of working alongside you to make
San Diego the best community to live, work, and
play. It’s been an honor to highlight one of incredible
partners each month, as
we all strive to make the
future brighter. We recently
added some new team members, so I’m delighted
to introduce you to Kayla Valencia who will now be
leading Southwest’s Community
Outreach efforts in San Diego. While
I live in Dallas, a piece of my heart
will always be in San Diego.
Kelly Knox
Sr. Community Outreach Manager
Southwest Airlines
Those who work in
community outreach are
a unique breed, equipped
with both people skills
and a high level of cultural
competency. They are
primarily responsible for
connecting with people in
the broader community
by creating sponsorship
agreements and
facilitating relationships
with businesses,
individuals and other
relevant organizations.
Kayla Valencia
As the newest member
of the Southwest Airlines
family, Kayla Valencia
currently serves as the
company’s Community
Outreach Regional
Manager, where she is
tasked with positioning
Southwest Airlines as
a leading corporate
citizen by empowering
communities to thrive
through strategic
investments. “I have the
pleasure of managing the
nonprofit and chamber
of commerce partners
in California and the
Pacific Northwest, and
it has been such a treat
to support the impactful
work they do, especially
in my own home state,”
Kayla shared with GB
Magazine. In her new
ole, she is most looking
forward to being an engaged
partner to the nonprofits and
chambers of commerce that
Southwest Airlines supports.
There is a lot of opportunity
to cross-collaborate across
communities and amplify
their work to broader
audiences. She notes, “I am
fortunate to be able to give
back to the communities
we live and work in with
localized approaches and a
people-first attitude.”
Kayla’s passion for the airline
dates back to her teenage
years. “I grew up in a Southwestloving
family, so I have an album on my
phone with a ton of window pictures
with the Southwest airplane wings
going back to high school,” she says.
Following her high school graduation,
Kayla attended Northwestern University
and earned her B.A. in Communication
Studies and certificates in Civic
Engagement and Integrated Marketing
Communications.
She was also on
the Partnerships
Team at an
economic
development
organization in
Tulsa, Oklahoma.
With prior
experience
in operations
and business
development,
Kayla has helped
various small
businesses
and startups in
the logistical,
legal, financial,
marketing and
sales spheres.
“As a leader focused on strategy and
communication, I love to problemsolve
creatively, communicate those
solutions in an effective way, and put
those solutions into action, especially
to the benefit of others,” she says.
Kayla is also a big believer in leading
from behind and is inspired by the
ability to teach or support others.
More importantly, she adds that it is
the people who propel Southwest’s
partner organizations forward and
have continuously demonstrated the
power behind serving and supporting
others that inspire her
every day.
Walk MS Team in 2022
In addition to her
promising career, Kayla
has been participating
in an event called Walk
MS that raises money
for the Multiple Sclerosis
Society since 2017.
This past year alone,
she raised over $10K
and rallied a team of
15 to participate in the
first in-person event
since 2019. “It was
such an amazing
showing of support
for my mother who
was diagnosed in
2013,” she says.
When Kayla is
not cultivating
meaningful
partnerships in her
new position, she
is participating in a
variety of outdoor
activities, updating
her Goodreads
account, and taking
golf lessons.
Sharp ENVISIONS
the Future of
Extraordinary Nurses
The Sharp Prebys Innovation
and Education Center
Over 7,000 nurses at Sharp
HealthCare touch the lives
of more than 1 million
San Diegans each year. In
recognition of the critical
role nurses play in patientcentered
care, the Terrence
and Barbara Caster
Institute for Nursing Excellence was established
to advance the nursing profession through
opportunities for lifelong learning - ultimately
translating to even greater patient care. With the
$3 million naming gift from the Caster Family Trust,
the Caster Nursing Institute has four centers of
excellence, each with a unique focus: Professional
Growth, Inquiry and Innovation, Education and
Technology, and Community Engagement.
Alchera Ayyad

In 2022, Sharp awarded
$228,500 in scholarships
toward educating the next
generation of nurses and
advancing nursing education.
According to Laurie Ecoff, vice
president of the Caster Nursing
Institute, this includes one of
the newest scholarships offered
through the Wiesler Center
for Professional Growth: the
Del Corazon First Generation
Nursing Scholarship. The
scholarship is available
to Sharp employees and
associates who are firstgeneration
college students.
The Del Corazon Scholarship
was made possible by
a generous $1 million
gift from long-time Sharp
philanthropists Willy and
Alchera Ayyad.
The first $20,000 Del Corazon
scholarships were recently
awarded to two Sharp
employees: Zuhra Sahak, a
nursing assistant at Sharp
Chula Vista Medical Center;
and Mayerlis Guerrero, a
medical assistant in family
medicine at Sharp Rees-Stealy
Scripps Ranch.
Zuhra knew since childhood she
wanted to become a nurse and
says she couldn’t imagine not
working in a career that helps
improve the lives of others.
When Zuhra learned she was
a Del Corazon scholarship
recipient, she says she could
hardly believe her eyes upon
receiving the good news.
Mayerlis Guerrero, Sharp
Rees-Stealy Medical Centers
Her parents - who immigrated
from Afghanistan 25 years
ago - read the email with her,
realizing the opportunities they had envisioned for her
were becoming a reality. It was an emotional day for her
entire family and one she will not soon forget. Zuhra says
Zuhra Sahak, Sharp Chula
Vista Medical Center
she wants to pursue a career
as a nurse educator and help
support and advance the
careers of future nurses.
Mayerlis is also extremely
grateful for the Del Corazon
scholarship. It will pay for her
first year of nursing school
and increase her future career
opportunities as she works
toward becoming a nurse
practitioner. Mayerlis says
her heart was always set on
becoming a pediatric or labor
and delivery nurse. Her love
for working at the bedside with
patients of all ages is what led
her to pursue her career.
Mayerlis’ mother - a single
mom - was a nurse in
Nicaragua before moving with
Mayerlis - then just 3 years
old- to California. Now a single
mom herself, Mayerlis says
this scholarship has forever
changed their lives.
Thanks to the generous
contributions made to
the ENVISION Campaign,
even more exciting things
are ahead for the Caster
Nursing Institute, including
establishing a new home
and teaching center in the
Sharp Prebys Innovation and
Education Center. Continued
philanthropic investment in the
Caster Nursing Institute will
help expand the knowledge
and competency of Sharp
nurses so that skilled and
compassionate caregivers can
continue to care for community
members for decades to come.
with the hiring of
Dr. Michelle E.
Thompson, the
museum’s new -
and first - Exequiel
Ezcurra Director
of Conservation Biology. The fully endowed position
was funded by anonymous donors, who requested it be
named in recognition of Dr. Exequiel Ezcurra.
Thompson, who is fluent in English and Spanish, will steer
Mission Control
BRINGING EDUCATION TO WHERE THE NEED IS MOST CRITICAL
Space Day at the San Diego
Air and Space Museum
The San Diego Air & Space Museum’s new Mission
Control mobile classroom will dramatically increase
the Museum’s STEM outreach and programming.
The San Diego Air & Space Museum has provided
STEM-focused youth educational programming in the
local community for several decades, and education
remains a top priority for the Museum. Now, the
Museum is in the process of launching a new program
– titled Storybook Engineering! – allowing its education
team to travel to parts of the community where the
need for educational programming is needed most.
66 GBSAN.COM | JANUARY 2023

Mission Control
To support Storybook Engineering! and all of its other
extensive educational programming, the Museum is
restoring a STEM education bus – appropriately titled
“Mission Control” – designed to bring programming to
additional schools, childcare centers, Boys & Girls clubs,
and summer
camps to increase
its geographical
outreach, quality
and quantity
of equipment
used, and most
importantly,
the number of
children served.
The bus serves
as a mobile
classroom
traveling to
Mission Control arriving at the
Gillespie Field Annex for its makeover
remote and underserved populations, bringing STEM
education to where local youth live and learn. Museum
educators provide instruction using advanced technology,
supplies, and learning processes to engage children’s
imagination. At the conclusion of each program, students
take home a new storybook and supplies for simple
activities to extend learning at home.
The Museum’s current classroom at its location in Balboa
Park accommodates 30 students as well as storage for
educational materials and equipment. Unfortunately, the
space does not provide a way to engage populations
who are unable to visit the Museum due to distance
or resources. The Mission Control mobile classroom
will allow the Museum to inspire the next generation of
learners to be innovative critical thinkers, problem solvers,
and focused on careers in STEM related fields.
The handson
portions of
the Museum’s
education
programs include
building and art
projects, which
connect back to
the meaning of
the stories the
students read,
using materials
such as blocks
and arts and
crafts supplies. As children engage their imagination, they
learn to solve problems and develop critical thinking
skills, use references from the story, and collaborate
with their peers and caregivers.
The Mission Control mobile classroom will allow the
San Diego Air & Space Museum to continue its mission
to provide underserved and underfunded San Diego
area children access to youth development programs
that prompt academic and future career-workforce
readiness success in the fields of science, technology,
engineering and math.
Community
Celebrating 55 Years
HOME OF GUIDING HANDS:
Owns and Operates 31 Group Homes!
Provides Care to over 4,000 people every year!
East County’s largest employer with over 800!
The HGH Verbeck
Resource Center today
Fifty-five years ago, Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) created
something special: a safe place for individuals with disabilities to
call their home. That was the beginning of Home of Guiding Hands.
Today, HGH owns and operates 31 group homes in East County
San Diego. Having grown from a 200-bed campus setting in
Lakeside, Home of Guiding Hands now provides an array of services
throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties. Though premium,
around-the-clock, residential care is still their specialty and rooted
deep in the core of their business, HGH’s community and in- home services provide
expert care to over 4,000 people every year. In fact, Home of Guiding Hands has
served over 20,000 individuals since their inception in 1967.
Home of Guiding Hands serves infants, children and adults who have been
diagnosed with an intellectual disability such as Down syndrome, autism, epilepsy
or cerebral palsy. They are the largest employer in East County, with over 800
employees and was recently voted one of the best places to work in San Diego.
72 GBSAN.COM | JANUARY 2023

The HGH
campus in 1967
The organization’s workforce consists of a diverse
population, representing every aspect of the industry
they serve. HGH respects the cultural and environmental
influences that contribute to each person’s unique
characteristics and support the needs of their workforce
by embracing the philosophy of the whole person.
Edward Hershey, President, and CEO of Home of
Guiding Hands, has a daughter diagnosed with Williams
syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by
delays in cognitive development or learning difficulties,
a distinctive facial appearance, and a unique personality
that combines over-friendliness and high levels of empathy
with anxiety. Edward knows, firsthand, how special each
of HGH’s clients are. Edward shared with GB Magazine,
“we ourselves must be willing to experience all of our
services in the exact manner our clients do.” In other
words, each HGH employee should be comfortable
spending a week in one of their group homes or riding
comfortably on one of their buses, and if they are not,
then the organization needs to make improvements.
In 2022 alone, HGH completed 50 needed
improvements and beautification projects at their
residential homes, re-investing over $300,000 back into
their properties. They take great pride in the premium
condition of their homes and in making the houses a little
more “homier” for the residents.
Client-centered quality is the focal point of the
organization’s decisions. Client experience is at the top
of all of the program funding decisions. It is what sets
Home of Guiding Hands apart from other congregate
care providers. It is what they have based their values
on Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect,
and Empathy.
Home of Guiding Hands’ mission has not changed over
the last five decades: to improve the quality of life for
individuals with developmental delays. Home of Guiding
Hands is still managed by a small group of community
leaders and parents, and they proudly boast of the quality
of care given daily to every client.
Today, Home of Guiding Hands is one of San Diego
County’s largest providers of support and services for
children and adults with developmental and intellectual
disabilities. They extend a huge and heartfelt THANK YOU
to their beloved community for their support over the
past 55 years as HGH embarks on another 55 years of
exceptional work.
Feeding San Diego has been rescuing
since its founding 15 years ago.
In recent years, the pandemic and
ensuing economic challenges have
brought newfound awareness to the problem of hunger
energy to bolster its mission from five new members,
Feeding San Diego’s Board of Directors is charging ahead
Each new board member brings a unique set of skills to
the table. The new members are Shawn Caine, owner
of the Law Offices of Shawn E. Caine, A.P.C.; Juan
responsibility is to
help management
be successful.
I am looking
forward to
helping make that
happen,” shared
Bill Keitel, who
was introduced to
Feeding San Diego
by its founder,
philanthropist
Gwendolyn
Sontheim.
Juan Gil-Ramirez
has served the
Mexico City Food
Bank for 15 years and recently
moved to San Diego. “It is
incredible that we produce food
to feed 100% of the population,
but we waste around 30%,”
he explained “We have all the
means to try to solve those
imbalances. One solution is
Feeding San Diego.”
“We live in an area with
abundance and yet at the same
time a lot of need,” added
Eric Hornsten, who started
volunteering at Feeding San
Diego with his kids in 2021.
“The number of lives that are
improved as the organization
works towards its very
aspirational goal to end hunger
is just phenomenal.”
Feeding San Diego’s founder and
board chair, Gwendolyn Sontheim
Shawn Caine represents several large produce growers in
California. Feeding San Diego currently rescues produce
from farms around the county but would like to expand its
relationships.
“In talking to Mark Loretta, a current board member and
former Padre
player, it became
apparent that I
might be able
to help Feeding
San Diego bridge
some gaps
with farmers,”
Caine explained.
“If there is an
opportunity where
I can make sure
that some people
are healthier and
less hungry, I’ll
Feeding San Diego board members Juan give it my best.”
Gil-Ramirez, Alberto Mier y Teran, and
Eric Hornsten at Feeding San Diego’s
15th anniversary party in May 2022 Like Cain, Alberto
Mier y Terán saw
an opportunity to
create change by
joining the board.
“I believe that we live in the
best county in the world, and
we should be able to provide
enough food so that nobody
goes hungry. We need to figure
out how to get it to the right
people, at the right time, in the
right way,” he shared with GB
Magazine. “It will take a while,
but we have to do it.”
Along with the new members,
Feeding San Diego’s board
includes Gwendolyn Sontheim,
Children
The Investigation of Missing
& Exploited Children
BY MARK GILLESPIE, SAVED IN AMERICA ADVISORY BOARD MEMBER
We tend to live our lives daily
not realizing that at any
given moment our world
could be shattered – by a
stray bullet, a traffic fatality,
an assault or robbery or a
missing loved one. Take the Joseph Travers, Founder & CEO
with Joshua Travers, Case Manager
case of a missing child. Is
and Law Enforcement Liaison
the child missing due to child
sex trafficking? In 2021, the
National Center for Missing
and Exploited Children (NCMEC)
received more than 17,200 reports of
possible child sex trafficking from all
50 U.S. States, Washington, D.C. and
Puerto Rico.
Private investigators across the
country routinely receive calls from
families whose child is missing. Many
of these investigators, with varying
degrees of expertise and resources,
know how to utilize social media and
poster campaigns. Unfortunately,
we run in to roadblocks due to lack of support and
cooperation by local law enforcement agencies and
limited resources. How do we become more successful
in recovering missing children?
One PI that has dedicated
many years to breaking the
code to find missing and
runaway children, is Texas
Association of Licensed
Investigators (TALI) member
Joseph Travers from San
Diego. In 2009, Joseph
founded Saved In America
(SIA), a California nonprofit
organization comprised of
30 operators (former law
enforcement officers, Navy
SEALs and other military
special operators) who
have become licensed and
insured private investigators
and assist parents and
law enforcement in locating missing,
runaway and exploited children. In
addition, SIA’s staff has a director
of investigation, legal director, case
manager, community outreach/events
coordinator, law enforcement liaison,
social networking investigator, licensed
drone operators and state licensed
firearms instructors.
Since their initial operation in December
2014, Saved In America has assisted
parents and law enforcement with more
than 270 child recovery cases nationwide. The approach
and techniques used by Saved In America help guide
the rest of the nation on how to stop child sex trafficking.
Saved In America has taught its investigative techniques to
organization and they only use
SIA Investigative Process
Saved In America’s success can be
attributed to their detailed investigative
process which was created by Joseph
Step 1: RECORD
Paris
CITY OF LIGHT
Sainte-Chapelle
Due to its amazing mix of history,
culture, arts, shopping and
entertainment, Paris remains
the second most visited city in
Europe, second only to London.
Millions of people visit the City
of Light every year and with so
many points of interest, there is
something for everyone. The most iconic places to see
in Paris include the Eiffel Tower, l’Arc de Triomphe
and Notre-Dame Cathedral, or the lesser known
Sainte-Chapelle. As we explored the streets of Paris
we cherished visiting picturesque neighborhoods,
like Montmartre which housed and inspired artists
for decades, to Saint-Germain-des-Prés with its
The Palace of Versailles
quintessential café patios and designer shops. A
lesser-known museum, Phono Museum Paris
highlights 140 years of recorded sound and
showcases over 300 phonographs, victrolas and
jukeboxes, turned out to be an unexpected delight.
The Louvre
Eiffel Tower
In the center of the city, we were
awestruck with the magnitude of
the Eiffel Tower from which we
enjoyed 360-degree views of the
city. We then ventured off to The
Louvre, which is the world’s largest
art museum and home to countless
works of art including the Mona Lisa.
A trip to Paris would not be complete
without visiting The Palace of
Versailles which sits on the outskirts
of the city, a short metro ride away.
This chateau was the principal royal
residence for French royalty between
1682 and 1789 and housed famous
historical figures like King Louis XVI.
Paris
One of the best parts of visiting Paris is the food and wine. From
crepes, pain au chocolate, fresh bread from the Boulangerie, steak
frites and more there are culinary delights to suit everyone. Beautiful
parks and gardens to shopping, museums, iconic attractions, world
famous cafes and more Paris makes for a perfect ESCAPADITA.
