Welcome to Spring 2024
This spring, we see renewal all around us, with the warmer
weather bringing out the buds and blossoms on the
trees, wildflowers appearing in the woods, the songbirds
returning from the south, and the prospect of relaxing
by the water or campfire. We are all looking forward to
replenishing our spirits in nature near the beautiful lakes,
rivers and forests of the Kawarthas. The natural areas found
here are perfect for adventures of all kinds – hiking, cycling,
fishing and paddling.
Inside this issue, you will find lots of ideas for beautifying
your indoor and outdoor spaces, at your home, cottage or
rural property.
For over 20 years, Angela Jones, owner of Lakeshore
Designs, has been designing homes and cottages for
her clients, bringing her flair for lake house living to the
region. She views each space as a canvas for innovation
and expression, believing in the importance of crafting
environments that inspire and uplift homeowners. Read
about how after several years of looking for the right
lake house for herself, she found it recently on Chemong
Lake, and set to work bringing her signature style to her
own residence. Jones is known for her work with the
Princess Margaret Cottage Lottery to raise money for
cancer research. This year, she has designed the interiors
of the cottages for the draw in Prince Edward County, the
Kawarthas and Muskoka.
Many businesses in Peterborough and the Kawarthas have
a long tradition of serving their customers. Throughout
these pages you will find services from many longstanding
businesses whose livelihood depends on local patronage.
Purchasing products or services locally makes lives better
for cottagers, homeowners and visitors alike, contributing
to a strong community and regional economy.
Read about the unique ecosystem of The Land Between,
a transition zone between the Canadian Shield and the
St. Lawrence Lowlands that much of the Kawarthas lies
within. The area is home to many species at risk and
declining species including turtles, the five-lined skink,
rare plants, mammals, and fishes. Learn more about The
Land Between non-profit organization that is working
to help preserve the natural environment, animals and
plants of this important region.
The Kawarthas offer a high quality of life in a relaxed
atmosphere within a beautiful natural setting. We hope you
will take the time to discover all there is available here.
COVER STORY
Creates Modern,
yet Traditional Kitchen
Photos by Wayne Ferguson
By Joanne Culley
When Mike and Jessica purchased their new
dream home in the countryside, they wanted
to finish it off with a distinctive kitchen.
“We looked at many different kitchen companies, but
when Stacey Lawrence at Kitchen Cabinet Solutions
saw the project, she presented us with ideas and plans
that wowed us – she went above and beyond to give us
some great ideas.” says Mike.
“Mike and Jessica had a great idea of the style they
wanted - modern colours mixed with traditional
design elements, state-of-the-art appliances and a
large island were all on their wish list,” says designer
Stacey Lawrence. “They really gave us the freedom
to create a beautifully high functioning kitchen, with
a very clear path to their style preferences and daily
essentials.”
Both Mike and Jessica like to cook and wanted an easy
layout that would be efficient as well as functional.
The showpiece of the kitchen is the 9 ft. by 5 ft. island
with a stunning black quartz countertop with white
veining that elegantly pulls the perimeter cabinet
colour into the centre of the room. The island’s Shakerstyle
doors are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Black and
the island is complete with large pot and pan drawers,
a custom paper towel pullout accessory and a pullout
microwave drawer.
“I was so impressed that they caught the veining of
the quartz in the right spot for the waterfall at the
side,” says Mike. “I’ve been in the new home industry
for 13 years and I’ve rarely encountered such attention
to detail.”
The cabinets are all made locally which makes the
entire process a dream. As Mike was building the
space for the cabinets, the cabinets were being built.
Any unforeseen problems that came up on the house
building side could be accommodated by the cabinet
design. For example, that beautiful crown to the
ceiling is exactly the height it is to hide the ductwork.
Custom cabinets are made with custom heights and
depths to fit this very custom home.
And this kitchen is not just for show. The whole family
will be using it, so it’s designed to give everyone space
to cook and prep together whether for everyday or for
those extra special big meals.
“There’s so much storage and easy access to all the
important tools, appliances and ingredients,” says
Stacey. “They have spice pullouts on both sides of the
stove, an amazing corner pullout, a pullout waste and
recycle station, a tall pantry filled with rollouts and the
most efficient butler’s pantry through the door beside
the double ovens. It’s filled with ingredient- lined
open shelves and keeps all small appliances easily
accessible and off the counters in the main kitchen.”
The bright kitchen is filled with light, with a wall of
windows on one side, and beautiful hanging pendant
lights over the island and a large stainless steel
farm sink.
“The circular lights with enclosed candelabras are a
perfect counterpoint to the rectangular and square
surfaces and lines in the rest of the kitchen, another
element of modern meets traditional,” says Stacey.
Kitchen Cabinet Solutions also designed the couple’s
laundry room. “The laundry room is the size of a small
kitchen with two standing, stackable washers and
dryers, a closet rod on a floating shelf and a full wall
of counter space on which to fold clothes,” says Stacey.
“It’s navy blue with a gorgeous white countertop and
shaped backsplash. It’s beautiful. Mike and Jessica are
not afraid of colour and are extremely design savvy.”
Photos by Wayne Ferguson
Kitchen Cabinet Solutions also designed and
constructed the main floor and ensuite bathrooms. “We
were so impressed with the installers. It was as if they
were working on their own home,” says Mike. “All of
the people we dealt with treated us with respect and
kindness. We are so pleased with how our kitchen
turned out – we would definitely recommend Kitchen
Cabinet Solutions to others.”
“It’s such a bright, welcoming kitchen,” says Stacey. “It’s
a place where you want to gather. It was such a great
project for us all to work on.”
Kitchen Cabinet Solutions is the place to go to create
your dream kitchen. Their experienced team of
designers work with you to create a perfect blend of
high functioning layout with a beautifully designed
kitchen that fits your budget, and their installers work
with your space and all of its challenges to finish your
new favorite space.
And they’re not limited to kitchens. They design, create
and install bathroom vanities, entertainment areas, bars,
offices, laundry rooms, closets and any other space you
have that requires high quality custom cabinets.
Kitchen Cabinet Solutions is located at 709 The
Parkway in Peterborough, close to cottage country and
DISCOVERY DREAM HOMES
Turns Couple’s Vision into Reality
By Joanne Culley
John and Lorraine, who live in Burlington,
originally wanted to build a new house in
Oakville. But when COVID hit, they realized they
wanted to spend more time in cottage country, and
when they found the perfect lot on Bigwin Island in
Muskoka, near where they had vacationed before, they
embarked on their project.
“Discovery Dream Homes and Design Consultant Peter
Henderson came highly recommended to us and after
doing our research and learning that we could bring
our own plans and vision to the process, we chose
them,” says John.
The couple designed their custom home with the
help of Discovery designer Jennifer Kearns who met
with the pair several times to go over their ideas and
concepts.
Having two children and four granddaughters, the
couple wanted generous space for their family and
friends. The cottage has seven bedrooms and six
washrooms, with 3700 sq. ft on the top two floors and
1600 sq. ft in the full basement.
The main floor boasts a large cathedral ceiling, with
extensive windows that look out onto the lake. Two
stone fireplaces are focal points in both the Great
Room and the Muskoka Room.
Peter Henderson collaborated with the couple
throughout the construction process. With all of their
projects, the client can use Discovery certified builders,
or can arrange for their own contractor. In this case,
Lorraine and John choose Tim Lamb of Lake of Bays
Custom Homes Inc.
Wood abounds throughout the home. With tongue-andgroove
pine shiplap interior and rustic flooring, the
cottage has a ‘traditional Muskoka’ feeling which adds
to its warmth and character.
“The quality of the materials was exceptional, from
the insulated exterior wall sheathing, the engineered
subflooring, pine rafters and posts, to the windows
they helped us select,” says John.
Discovery is known for its energy-efficient homes and
this home is no exception. John even took a Custom
Home building course in Denver, Colorado, so that he
could be on top of the best practices to ensure they
created a well-sealed building envelope.
“Lorraine and I are extremely happy with our cottage,
which is spectacular,” says John. “We love its unique
character and appearance, and know that behind the
walls, we have a quality build. We could not be happier
with our experience of working with Peter and his
team. The finished product proves we made the right
decision in choosing Discovery to help us make our
dream cottage a reality.”
When working with clients, Peter Henderson, with the
help of the Discovery team, aims to make the building
process a pleasurable experience, and is always there
to answer any questions they might have.
Success in Cottage Co-ownership
Passing down the family cottage from generation
to generation; watching children and grandchildren
grow up at the lake, building a foundation of shared
experiences and traditions, and imagining those loved
ones passing down such cherished memories and
traditions to their own families ... is a dream for many
Ontarians. Unfortunately, very few families successfully
transition ownership of the cottage within the family
more than once, if that. Conflicting expectations
for sharing the cottage amongst family members;
perceived (or actual) disproportionate allocations of
responsibility, time and expense between owners; and,
unanticipated changes to the matrimonial, physical or
financial capacity of one or more family members can
quickly turn the dream into a nightmare. However,
planning ahead to address, and even discussing the
possibility there could exist, future conflicts can reduce
the likelihood of them occurring in the first place.
Family members have the most success in cottage coownership
when they are on the same page or have a
plan to get back there. Co-ownership of a recreational
property within families, especially siblings or
extended relatives, is not wisely entered into unless
accompanied by some form of written agreement
– akin to a “cottage prenup”. Whether transitioning
ownership to the next generation upon, or in some
cases in advance, of the death of a prior owner,
or pooling resources to acquire a new investment
together, time spent creating a proper agreement
is never time wasted. Articulating expectations and
outlining a process for dealing with both mundane
matters of shared ownership (allocating responsibility
for bills and payment arrangements, establishing
maintenance schedules, and creating timetables for
use), as well as larger sources of future conflict (what
to do in the event of the death, disability or marriage
breakdown of an owner, or how to respond when
one seeks to extract their equity while the other(s)
wish to retain the cottage) helps co-owners maintain
perspective and stay focused on the dream of cottage
living that brought them together.
While it’s impossible to anticipate all the future holds,
a professionally crafted co-ownership agreement can
go a long way to ensuring issues that do arise are
dealt with as smoothly and efficiently as possible
– keeping families together and allowing multiple
generations the opportunity to enjoy the experience
of cottage living.
LAKESHORE DESIGNS
...renovates cottage on Chemong Lake
By Joanne Culley
For over 20 years, Angela Jones has been designing
homes and cottages for her clients, bringing her
flair for lake house living to the region. She views
each space as a canvas for innovation and expression,
believing in the importance of crafting environments
that inspire and uplift homeowners.
After several years of looking for the right lake house
for herself, she found it recently on Chemong Lake,
and set to work bringing her signature style to her own
residence.
“I fell in love with this lakefront bungalow tucked in
at the end of the road, at the edge of the canal,” says
Angela Jones, owner of Lakeshore Designs. “Originally a
cottage, it had several add-ons, and the previous family
had lived there for over 20 years – it was the perfect
place for me to customize and turn into my own unique
lake house.”
Over the years of designing homes for her clients,
Jones had developed a wish list of what she wanted in
her own home, and set to work making structural and
cosmetic updates.
“I upgraded the exterior and interior to maximize the
use of space, brightened the cottage with white linen
draperies, applied some fresh paint and added ship lap,”
says Angela. “My vision was to transform it into a bright,
fresh, lake house with a beach vibe on a white and soft
blue palette with colour accents.”
She repainted the exterior red bricks white, trimming
with soft blue doors and shutters, colours which
continue to the interior. In the living room she removed
a horseshoe-shaped brick fireplace surround, then
reconfigured it to appear more modern with ship lap, a
smaller fireplace, a new mantel, and a Samsung Art TV
that is disguised as her favorite beach photo.
Angela widened the doorways and updated the two
bathrooms, creating an ensuite with unique penny tiles
emblazoned with the word “lake” surrounding the tub.
“In the garage, I added a laundry/mud room with a
special area for my dogs to hang out in, and constructed
a custom dog run for them outside,” she continues. “I
redid the landscape by creating a beautiful sandy sitting
area which is like being at the beach.”
Every room in the home has a bright, beautiful view of
Chemong Lake, providing tranquility for her morning
coffee.
In the kitchen, Angela removed a half wall, opening
it up to the living room, then she added a central
island for ease of entertaining. She installed ship lap
and pendant lights on the ceiling and a powder blue
backsplash to contribute to the beach vibe.
“I’m very happy with this bright and airy lake house,
overlooking the bay, which is so nice to come home to,”
says Angela.
For those wanting to incorporate stylings from this
home into their own homes or cottages, Angela and her
team of professionals will do a consultation, working
with the client’s wish list to achieve the look they want
within their budget.
Angela Jones and her team specialize in all aspects of
residential and commercial design. Creating a vision
for your cottage or home is their specialty, providing
everything from in-home consulting, design, draperies,
and furnishings to project management, to create a
comfortable, flowing, and well-balanced space, working
with any budget or project size. Her team of contractors,
plumbers, electricians, and business partners work
together to complete the projects.
Angela was named Business Woman of the Year
in Peterborough in 2020, and was honoured to be
nominated for the RBC Canadian Women of Influence
Awards. Lakeshore Designs has been voted ‘Best Interior
Design Company’ in the Readers Select Diamond
Awards. The company has also received many awards
in design and business including the Best Renovation
at the Kawartha Lakes Chamber of Commerce, the
Peterborough and the Kawartha’s Homebuilders
Association Award for Best Interior Design, the Merit of
The Entrepreneurial Spirit Award at the Peterborough
Business Excellence Awards. In 2022 they won the best
commercial renovation for the Boathouse Boutique
from the Peterborough and Kawarthas Chamber of
Commerce.
Over the past 12 years, Angela Jones and her team have
worked with the Princess Margaret Cottage Lottery to
raise money for cancer research. This year, the summer
cottages for the draw are in Prince Edward County, the
Kawarthas and Muskoka.
When asked about her longtime participation with the
fundraiser, she replies that she wholeheartedly supports
the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, as all funds raised
go back into cancer research, which she says “has been
making great progress in fighting the disease. By buying
a ticket, you are supporting world-leading research that
changes the lives of cancer patients and their family
members on a daily basis.” For more information about
the lottery, please visit princessmargaretlotto.com.
CABINETREE
Creates Bright Classic Kitchen
By Joanne Culley
Helga’s small kitchen was 50 years old, the
same age as her house, which she says still
had the builder cupboards. She’d already
painted them twice and didn’t want to paint them a
third time. Plus, the peninsula was in an awkward spot
with cupboards above it that were difficult to access.
“I realized that it was time to renovate the kitchen,” she
says. “I knew other people who had used Cabinetree
for their kitchens and when it was time for my kitchen
I knew I wanted to use Cabinetree as well.”
Helga selected Cabinetree’s Shaker MDF door painted
in Morning Dew. The bold matte black cabinet pulls
offer contrast against the light paint colour. The
countertop and backsplash are Calacatta Extra from
Hanstone, which has a white base with marble veining
that complements the cabinets.
The peninsula has casual seating for two, along with
decorative matching door panels and baseboards. It
provides storage for seldom-used items via a “secret”
door panel at the back.
Helga worked with designer Laurel Angel at Cabinetree
early on in the process and she helped in planning the
layout and designing the kitchen cabinets.
“I wanted the sink to be in front of the window, and as
it’s not a large space, I needed help with the layout,”
says Helga.
“We went over Helga’s wish list and talked about how
she wanted the space to function,” says Laurel. The
kitchen has several unique custom features, such as a
charging drawer for phones and iPads to the left of the
sink and a pull-out microwave drawer to the right of
the sink that doesn’t take up countertop space, which
Helga says “fits like a glove” and is easy to use.
“It was important for the kitchen to be cohesive with
the rest of the home, so we added traditional features
such as a valence above the sink and a matching
custom range hood,” says Laurel. Other features that
help the rooms flow together are the flooring and
the upper crown moulding which carries throughout
the main floor. The contractor was able to widen the
doorway to the dining room to make it more open.
The kitchen is now much brighter, with hanging
pendant lights over the peninsula, under-cabinet
lighting and pot lights which continue into the family
room. Dimmer switches allow for various levels of
lighting to be selected depending on the atmosphere
desired and the different seasons.
“I love the quiet calm of the new kitchen – life
is busy enough and it’s now a soothing space to
retreat to,” says Helga. “I was so impressed with the
professionalism of all of the Cabinetree staff, from the
measuring, the design and the installation, they were
all wonderful people to deal with and everything was
so well thought-out.”
“The kitchen is now more open and much brighter
than before, with an updated classic feel and lots of
stand-out details,” says Laurel.
The designers at Cabinetree take great pride in helping
clients with the design of their new spaces. They work
with clients to uncover exactly what is needed from
the space to make it the best possible layout to fit
their home and lifestyle. While the selections process
may be relatively similar from client to client, there
are always variables which make every project unique.
The designers uncover these details to truly tailor
each space to the individual clients and assist with the
selection of finishing touches, such as colour, hardware
selection, and countertops.
Prior to beginning work, Cabinetree takes detailed
laser measurements, so they can design a layout and
build cabinets to fit your space. With skilled designers
on staff, they are able to create designs that appeal to
everyone and fit any budget.
Their showroom, located at 600 Neal Drive,
offers many newly updated displays showcasing a
variety of styles, materials and popular accessories.
Attached to their showroom is their expansive
manufacturing facility, where they combine quality
craftsmanship, and cutting-edge technology.
Cabinetree offers a wide selection of materials, the
majority of which are manufactured proudly on site.
Most of their products and materials are sourced
either locally or from other Canadian companies. As
cabinetmakers, they love what they do and it shows in
all of their projects.
For over 35 years Cabinetree has been manufacturing
quality cabinets in Peterborough. They have proudly
received numerous accolades in recent years. In
2021 they won the North American Build Magazine’s
Home Builder of the Year award. In 2022 they won
Peterborough This Week Reader’s Choice awards
among the Kitchen/Bath Accessory Store, Kitchen
Design/Renovations, and Kitchen Store categories.
They were also the winner of PKHBA Housing
Design Awards for “Best Kitchen under $50,000.”
NORTHSTAR MARINE INSURANCE
Ontario’s Marine Insurance
Specialist for Boat Insurance
Since 2007, Northstar Marine has been selling
and servicing marine insurance in Ontario, with a
dynamic and different approach. They make boat
insurance easy with coverage specific to your
needs. They can provide you with a quick, easy
and understandable boat insurance quote on their
website, by phone or in person.
There are many reasons to insure your boat with
a marine specialist. The first is that the insurance
broker knows boats. You want someone who knows
a prop shaft from a camshaft – someone who
understands what you are talking about when you
want to add a camper top. The Northstar team has
spent over 20 years talking to boaters about boats.
They speak the language. They don’t do any other
type of insurance.
It’s important to pick a stand-alone marine policy
that is not attached to any other policy in any way.
The right policy is specialized for boats, rather than
just added on to a homeowner policy. Separate
coverage separates the risk from any other policy
and doesn’t affect other insurance product rates. If
you have a claim on your boat it doesn’t impact your
house policy.
Boaters need to look for watersports or pollution
liability coverage. Not all marine insurance policies
automatically include watersports or pollution
liability, relying on you to request it. Wakeboard
and ski boats are designed specifically for this
purpose so you want to make sure you have a high
liability limit to protect you if someone is injured
while skiing. A Northstar Marine Insurance policy
automatically includes watersports up to $2 million
and up to $2 million pollution liability coverage and
comprehensive physical damage protection.
Make sure you’re covered for loss of use. There is
nothing worse than having friends up to the cottage
for the weekend only to find out your boat is laid
up because you’ve had a claim. A Northstar policy
includes loss of use coverage for just this case.
While your boat is being repaired as a result of a
claim, the insurance covers the cost of a rental boat
(some limits apply). Northstar’s knowledgeable
claims team makes sure you’re back on the water as
quickly as possible.
region. “We work with clients from beginning to end
– from the idea stage, to developing the design plans,
acquiring the building permits, to final construction,”
says Rich Kloosterman, president.
He says that the skills they develop with smaller
projects can be scaled up to larger projects, with the
principles of project coordination, budgeting and
quality being the same.
“We are excited to be nearing completion on a stunning
country home in the Northumberland Hills that we’re
building in collaboration with the architectural firm
AGATHOM,” says Rich. “With a shell of concrete,
and using building materials of steel and glass, this
striking home is being constructed into the side of a
hill, with one side open to capture the magnificent
views of the surrounding countryside. The building
is being designed and built to have minimal impact
on the landscape. This project is really showcasing
the resiliency and flexibility of our team, that we can
handle a building of this size, shape and complexity.”
“When we’re working on a project we use many
different local trades, subtrades and supplies, not like
out-of-town contractors, who tend to use their out-oftown
connections,” he continues. “Over our years in
business, we’ve developed great relationships with our
local trades and suppliers. When we keep the business
local, we are contributing to a strong community and
local economy.”
During construction, dozens of local sub-contractors
are employed for work that includes excavation,
foundations, structural steel, plumbing, electrical,
heating, framing, glazing systems, concrete finishing,
stucco, masonry and more.
“My sons John, Dan and I are a strong team who are
dedicated to our clients and projects,” says Rich. “We’re
in it for the long term and pride ourselves on our close
attention to details.”
With all of their projects, they strive to provide close
on-site oversight and management to ensure success.
He says it’s important to keep tabs on the timing and
efficiency of the work, making sure the project is wellscheduled
and managed, and completed as quickly and
efficiently as possible.
“Because we have close oversight and scrutiny on all
our projects, we get direct feedback, and our trades
know what we expect. My daily site visits keep us on a
good rapport with the trades so that we’re all working
well together for the good of the project.”
THE LAND BETWEEN
The Edge of a Uniform Ecosystem
What do you notice when driving from
Haliburton to Toronto? Or when travelling
west to east, from Bracebridge to Kingston?
Perhaps what stands out is that the land is less rugged
than in the near north, but not as flat and not arable
like that to the south. Or maybe you notice exposed
bedrock in various greys and pinks. Look further and
you will notice a repeating and wavy landscape pattern
from low to high and wet to dry. What you are seeing
is the Land Between.
The Land Between is a transition zone between the
Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence Lowlands and
what ecologists call an ecotone: the edge of a uniform
ecosystem or region. This is no small “fringe” area
either. The whole of it extends west from Muskoka and
southern Parry Sound all the way to the Ottawa Valley.
On average it is 150 km. wide. The Land Between is
what we identify primarily as Cottage Country.
A patchwork of habitats; of limestone “stepping stones”
to the south and Granite barrens to the north. Shallow
soils predominate and many interconnected small
lakes and wetlands. In fact, The Land Between has
more shoreline than anywhere in Ontario and these
headwaters and wetlands in particular provide clean
potable surface and groundwater to benefit a vast part
of southern Ontario.
As is typical of ecotones, The Land Between is a mix
of features and not uniform, so it has some of the
highest habitat diversity in Ontario. Globally rare
ecosystems such as alvars and savannahs, fens and
meadow-marshes are found here.
Because of its physiography, The Land Between is at
the northern limit for many species such as Green
Heron, Cardinal, Common Crow, and Chorus Frog, and
at the southern limit for other species such as Moose,
American Raven, and Mink Frog.
While this landscape is remarkable and diverse, it is
the last “intact” landscape in the southern half of the
province, and an important wildlife refuge for
59 Species at Risk that are mainly found here,
from turtles, and the five lined skink to rare plants,
mammals, and fishes. Also, it is a vital home for
common but declining species such as bear, loon,
moose, lake trout and more.
Furthermore, The Land Between has a distinct culture
and history in Ontario. Beginning with Indigenous
heritage, the area was an important east to west travel
corridor for travel and trade, and which journey is
marked by Petroglyphs and Pictographs; the largest
collection of glyphs in North America, and which are a
testimonial about the relationship with the Creator as
well as embodying sacred timeless teachings.
Continued from Page 39
Then with post-contact settlement, areas were cleared
to make way for agriculture and lumbering. Poor soils
left European settlers dismayed, and many returned
leaving ghost towns. Those that stayed were resilient,
and “jacks of all trades” employing bartering and
entrepreneurship and leaving a legacy of a distinct
creative economy.
Then and now, the area is known for its serenity and
beauty, which are captured in works of art across the
continent. Its beauty and offerings are appreciated
by residents as well as thousands of cottagers and
visitors engaged in land-based tourism and outdoor
recreation. Of course, the value of the place is not only
in our appreciation, use and care of it, but this region
has vital and irreplaceable functions for our collective
wellbeing and future.
However, The Land Between is under accelerating
threats. Development for leisure and retirement
residences is increasing at an alarming rate, being
pushed too with the ability to work from home or
commute. And, unfortunately, The Land Between is
pretty easy to damage: Due to its shallow soils, rapid
drainage and interconnected aquatic resources, it is
very susceptible to contamination. Thin soil means
low absorptive capacity, and so limited capacity to
filter water. Combine this with a harsher climate and
the area has reduced capacity to buffer against injury.
There is a real risk of losing the very reason that
people migrate to and live in the area. If land use
management continues as “business as usual”, with
outmoded housing styles, additional roads and off-road
trails etc., the damage from these trends is certain.
Forces of population change are unavoidable, but
development can be thoughtful and guided.
When you think about it, it seems obvious that The
Land Between is different. It stands out and we’ve
known it all along! However, until recently the entire
area was not at all recognized as an entity. Most
planning authorities and ministries have typically
classified and managed ecosystems that are uniform so
despite its size, was not detected.
The Land Between is not only the name of the
region, but of a grassroots charity, and after 18 years
of collaborative efforts by the charity and partners,
the region is now recognized as one of 15 Community
Nominated Priority Areas in Canada. The Land
Between is pure; you can help keep it real by
learning or by getting involved in restoration or
community science programs offered by the charity.
LANG PIONEER VILLAGE MUSEUM OPENING MAY 21
This Summer Travel Back 200 Years in Time!
Take your travels in a new direction this
summer by travelling 200 years back in
time! At Lang Pioneer Village Museum, you
can relive history and experience life in
the 1800s in Peterborough County. The 25-acre site is
host to over 30 historic buildings and recreates a 19th
century hamlet.
Costumed interpreters introduce you to the people,
trades and events that have helped shape local history
as you visit homes and businesses from 1800 to 1910.
Learn about the history and culture of the Michi
Saagiig Anishnaabeg who first occupied the land and
were impacted by settlement. Watch the Blacksmith as
he shapes metal into a horseshoe on the anvil. Smell
the sweet scent of cookies baking in the woodstove.
Hear the school bell ring signaling the start of classes.
Try your hand at carrying water with a yoke and
bucket or using a washboard. You will feel like a
time traveler visiting the 1800s! The Museum is open
from 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday through Sunday from
Father’s Day to Labour Day.
Lang Pioneer Village Museum also offers a variety
of special events throughout the summer and fall.
Kicking off the Museum’s event schedule is the 27th
Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show on June
16. On July 14, the historic village will be filled with
antique and classic cars and vintage motorcycles for
the 27th Annual Transportation Day Car & Motorcycle
Show. Celebrate the heart of the summer harvest
season with some fresh fire-cooked corn during Corn
Roast on August 18.
The harvest celebration continues with the Museum’s
sweetest event, Applefest, taking place October
6. Enjoy an evening of fun and games as you are
AN HONEST DEAL ON
HARDWOOD FLOORING?
“Might I suggest a
Maple Hardwood Floor or perhaps
a Fine Oak, milled right here in Ontario?”
Our unusual selection of hardwood flooring has been carefully
curated to ensure you are choosing from the most unique hardwood
floors in the Kawarthas, including exotic species from around the
world to good old Canadian-made oak, maple and hickory flooring.
Many of the items on our menu are only available through Focus Flooring. This ensures you that your home
remains a unique expression of your personal taste and not some cookie cutter big box store home
with flooring that looks the same as three other homes in your neighbourhood.
Exceptional selection, great prices and terrific service from our knowledgeable staff...that’s Focus Flooring.
