Ramadan Street Festival<br />

Over the weekend, thousands of people flocked to<br />

Auburn for Council’s annual Ramadan Street Festival.<br />

This annual event provided an authentic outdoor<br />

experience within Auburn’s main street, and showcased<br />

the cultures and traditions of Ramadan including a call to<br />

prayer and speeches from community leaders. It was a lovely opportunity<br />

for our community to come together in unity and embrace Cumberland’s<br />

diversity during this holy month.<br />

Playground upgrade<br />

Works are currently underway at<br />

Alderson Park, Merrylands where the<br />

space is undergoing a playground<br />

upgrade. As part of the project, new play Alderson Park, Merrylands<br />

space facilities, a half-court basketball court, and outdoor gym equipment<br />

will be installed. This project is expected to be completed by July <strong>2024</strong>.<br />

Community Grants Program<br />

Youth Mental Health Community Consultation<br />

Council recently held a Youth Mental Health community consultation session<br />

with young people to gain their insights and input on key themes that were<br />

identified at the 2023 Youth Mental Health Summit. Council is prioritising<br />

access to youth mental health support services and programs and will continue<br />

to work alongside young people, service providers and government bodies in<br />

Charles William Munnery OAM Memorial Service<br />

I recently attended the late Charles William<br />

Munnery OAM memorial service held by<br />

the Merrylands RSL at the Merrylands RSL<br />

Memorial Garden. Charles was Life Member<br />

No 2 of the Merrylands RSL Club and was<br />

President for 14 years from 1960-1974. He was<br />

part of the Merrylands Football Club and a<br />

member of the Merrylands sub-Branch from<br />

1948 and Honorary Secretary from 1960-1961.<br />

The service held on Sunday 17 <strong>March</strong>, would<br />

have been Charles’ 100th Birthday. It was an<br />

honour to be involved in this service and to<br />

pay tribute to Charles’ life.<br />

Headmaster angry at coverage Not a good look, says Councillor<br />

The King’s School headmaster has hit out against the recent coverage of all-boys private<br />

schools.<br />

The headmaster of The King’s School<br />

has slammed the media and Government<br />

over recent coverage of boys’<br />

private schools, saying stories of toxic<br />

masculinity and elitism “distract” from<br />

their contributions to society.<br />

In the school’s journal Leader, the North<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Headmaster Tony George<br />

penned a six-page essay calling out criticism<br />

of single-sex private schools.<br />

“Instead of acknowledging and celebrating<br />

the significant achievement and contribution<br />

of independent schools to society,<br />

sections of Government and the press seem<br />

intent on deriding independent boys’ schools<br />

with any story they can concoct,” he said.<br />

“Invariably referencing the kinds of clickbait<br />

memes that tantalise memetic clichés,<br />

such as toxic masculinity linked to stories<br />

on single-sex schooling, or elitism linked to<br />

stories on school fees and funding.”<br />

George also believes it’s only single-sex<br />

elite boys’ schools that have been exclusively<br />

targeted by parts of the media.<br />

“Government single-sex schools have<br />

seemed to avoid criticism, as have single-sex<br />

girls’ schools,” he said.<br />

“However, the underlying agenda against<br />

the strawman of white privileged males<br />

has fuelled the creation of the term toxic<br />

masculinity and the religious fervour it<br />

subsequently generates.”<br />

The article comes after an explosive<br />

investigation by ‘Four Corners’ into the prestigious<br />

all-boys Cranbrook School revealed<br />

allegations of sexism.<br />

Graffiti and rubbish in <strong>Parra</strong>matta is<br />

sending the wrong message to both<br />

residents and visitors to the city,<br />

according to a local Councillor.<br />

underneath the Bernie Banton Bridge in<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta has left locals frustrated, with<br />

has to be done to prevent the vandalism.<br />

“People have complained about it, walking<br />

over the bridge and looking at it, but it’s<br />

mainly the children going to and from school<br />

that I’m more worried about,” he told <strong>Parra</strong><br />

<strong>News</strong>.<br />

“It’s not very good for anyone to have to look<br />

at it.”<br />

The <strong>Parra</strong>matta ward Councillor adds that<br />

it also gives a bad first impression to those<br />

who travel to the city to see events or watch<br />

sports games.<br />

“When the football is on or anything like<br />

that at CommBank [Stadium], you’ve got<br />

dozens of people walking past all this sort of<br />

thing,” Green said.<br />

“There’s quite a bit of [vandalism] along<br />

there, also along the precinct walk there,<br />

we’re getting a lot of needles.<br />

“It’s not a good look for the <strong>Parra</strong>matta city.<br />

They just throw their rubbish into the river<br />

there – we’ve got to do something about it.”<br />

Confirming Council officers have been<br />

notified, City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta said it is unable<br />

to clean up the graffiti under Bernie Banton<br />

Bridge as it falls on private property.<br />

“Council received a request to clean up<br />

graffiti near the Bernie Banton Bridge on<br />

<strong>March</strong> 20,” a City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta spokesperson<br />

said.<br />

“However, the graffiti identified is on<br />

private property and staff are unable to enter<br />

the premises to remove it.”<br />

With the new and improved <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

Police Station set to open sometime this year,<br />

Green is hoping police officers operating<br />

out of the heart of the city again will act as a<br />

deterrent for future vandalism and littering<br />

throughout the city.<br />

“We need to get the police down there to<br />

really clean it up,” he added.<br />

“Once the police station goes in across the<br />

road here, I think it will clear a lot of these<br />

problems up.”<br />

Don’t become a statistic this Easter<br />

It’s hard to believe the Easter long weekend<br />

is upon us. It feels like just yesterday we were<br />

unwrapping Christmas presents and celebrating<br />

the start of the new year.<br />

Time goes as slow or as fast as it always has<br />

but it certainly feels like the days and weeks<br />

are just flying by at the moment. It’s quite the<br />

cycle we find ourselves in.<br />

The long weekend is of course a time for relaxation<br />

and in many cases, getting away.<br />

It can also be a time for tragedy.<br />

Everyone from NSW Police to Royal Life Saving<br />

has been putting out warnings this week as<br />

they try to ensure this is not the last Easter for<br />

a father, a mum, or a child.<br />

Life is so fragile yet we seem to forget this<br />

when we’re out of our comfort zone, and that’s<br />

why so many accidents take place in holiday<br />

hot spots over times like this.<br />

Please, if you are heading away this weekend,<br />

be safe behind the wheel and careful in<br />

the water.<br />

Don’t become a headline, and make your<br />

way home safe. Happy Easter.<br />

Stop the world, I want to get off<br />

Ever get the feeling that it’s time to just stop?<br />

It hit me over the weekend. A realisation that<br />

life is hurtling by frighteningly fast, even if<br />

we’re unsure of the direction it’s going.<br />

That each of us are like boats in an ocean,<br />

bobbing about and buffeted by winds. Sometimes<br />

the current is stronger than us, however<br />

much we try to resist. Maybe sometimes, it’s<br />

better to just close our eyes and let things be.<br />

Imperceptibly, the seasons change. Summer<br />

slides into autumn. The sun is still here but<br />

losing its sting. And sapping heat and humidity<br />

in <strong>Parra</strong>matta is being replaced by the need<br />

for a light jumper or shawl when out at night.<br />

Possibly even socks at bedtime.<br />

For those who want to know, the cockroaches<br />

in our apartment block are still there. However,<br />

they’re less manic and audacious, and<br />

showing signs of wanting to hibernate themselves.<br />

It was an uncomfortable few months, where<br />

it felt almost too exhausting to do anything<br />

much. Almost everyone I know in our area was<br />

struggling to get decent sleep, particularly if<br />

your house or unit lacked functioning air-conditioning<br />

(or you couldn’t afford to keep it on).<br />

Just in the last week that has changed as our<br />

clock readjusts.<br />

Hibernation brings comfort for people, too.<br />

The thought of getting out in the backyard<br />

among the plants, clearing out the garage,<br />

focusing on odd jobs from sewing projects to<br />

sorting through old papers in the filing cabinet.<br />

Adding to the sense of a change of pace, it is<br />

a special time for people of faith, with commonalities<br />

between our city’s various religious<br />

communities. The sacrifices of Ramadan and<br />

Lent, followed by the joy of the feast. Palm<br />

Sunday services this past weekend, followed<br />

by a comprehensive Easter schedule starting<br />

with Holy Thursday where Christians gather<br />

for the traditional washing of the feet.<br />

While I am only an intermittent churchgoer<br />

today, as a child sitting in the pews during the<br />

Good Friday service, which inevitably lasted<br />

hours, I always used to feel sombre. As if this<br />

was the first occasion each year where you<br />

were forced to confront life’s deeper meaning.<br />

The reason why we are here, and if there is a<br />

deeper purpose and a plan.<br />

Decades later, there are still no definitive answers<br />

to those questions.<br />

However, for me, as for many, the search<br />

continues. Again, it’s one of the few times<br />

when life comes to a pause and we check back<br />

in.<br />

From last week’s barbaric terror attacks in<br />

Moscow to the ongoing carnage in Gaza, the<br />

notion of humanity as flawed and fallen is not<br />

hard to ascribe to when we see the world today.<br />

Closer to home, the murders of Jesse Baird<br />

and Luke Davies – in tragic counterpoint to<br />

the generous and much admired lives they led<br />

– have also provided stark reminders of the<br />

ongoing scourge of domestic violence.<br />

The need to stop – to turn the TV off – and<br />

to reconnect with our better spirits as human<br />

beings, has come to me most vividly when observing<br />

the media frenzy over the supposed<br />

disappearance of Kate Middleton, the Princess<br />

of Wales.<br />

Not being a Royal watcher, this one snuck up<br />

on me late.<br />

As far as I could tell, it was something about<br />

her being missing from the public eye for several<br />

months – then admitting to editing a photograph<br />

of her kids.<br />

The swirl of conspiracy theories was ridiculous.<br />

“A princess who had gone missing. It was<br />

intriguing and low stakes. She’d had a Brazilian<br />

butt lift. She was growing out her bangs.<br />

William was having an affair,” wrote SMH columnist<br />

Kerry Sackville at the weekend.<br />

“I jumped on the Katespiracy bandwagon.<br />

Now I’m flooded with shame.”<br />

The news that Kate is being treated for cancer<br />

at age 42, has I think, shocked the world. Her<br />

dignified disclosure of her condition, while<br />

sitting on a bench, provided the most simple,<br />

heartfelt and heartbreaking message we have<br />

seen from a public figure in years.<br />

It’s a reminder that even the most famous<br />

people are not sport for whatever lurid fantasy<br />

we can think of to entertain ourselves. They<br />

are people, too.<br />

The coarseness of our celebrity culture is<br />

shocking and it has to stop. But you can’t<br />

blame the messenger when we are the ones<br />

clicking on the links.<br />

My best wishes to readers for a happy,<br />

relaxing and restorative Easter holiday<br />

weekend.<br />

New plan for 368 apartments<br />

total of 368 new residential units<br />

has been proposed for Melrose<br />

Park, with the multi-million dollar<br />

plans recently lodged by developer Sekisui<br />

House Australia.<br />

The plans, which are to be determined by<br />

the Sydney Central Planning Panel, would<br />

deliver two 10-storey, two eight-storey and<br />

two six-storey residential buildings to the<br />

local area, if given the green light.<br />

The apartments would be divided into 86<br />

one-bedroom, 252 two-bedroom and 30<br />

three-bedroom units along 38-42 and 84<br />

Wharf Road, Melrose Park.<br />

The development plans to provide three<br />

levels of basement with a total of 499 parking<br />

spaces.<br />

A total of 3,361sqm of open space has also<br />

been proposed, including ground floor<br />

central courtyards, the level six rooftop<br />

courtyard spaces and the level 8 rooftop<br />

spaces.<br />

The Statement of Environmental Effects<br />

(SEE) said the development would not<br />

have any adverse environmental, social or<br />

economic impacts on the surrounding area.<br />

“The proposal contains design elements<br />

that seek to reduce potential visual, privacy<br />

and acoustic impacts and promote a high<br />

standard of residential amenity,” the document<br />

said.<br />

“It is considered that the proposed development<br />

produces an appropriate outcome<br />

on a site that will provide a high level of<br />

residential amenity for future residents and<br />

will not adversely impact upon residential<br />

amenity currently enjoyed by adjoining<br />

properties.<br />

“The proposal represents an appropriate<br />

use of well-located land that will contribute<br />

towards providing valuable housing opportunities.”<br />

Covering a total area of 10,097sqm, the site,<br />

known as ‘Lot F’, falls within the Melrose<br />

Park North Precinct.<br />

Described as an “important renewal<br />

precinct located east of the <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

CBD,” the project is expected to<br />

provide around 5,500 dwellings, a town<br />

centre, school and open spaces once<br />

complete.<br />

“The Melrose Park precinct is on the eastern<br />

edge of the City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta Council<br />

Local Government Area (LGA) and is in the<br />

process of transforming from an industrial<br />

area to one that will provide for mixed<br />

use development including high density<br />

residential, open space, retail/commercial<br />

uses, and a new school,” the document said.<br />

“The project will deliver significant public<br />

benefit for future residents within a highly<br />

accessible location.”<br />

The <strong>Parra</strong>matta Light Rail project has reached<br />

a significant milestone, with testing of trams<br />

rolling through our CBD ahead of services<br />

beginning later this year.<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta locals and visitors can look<br />

forward to seeing more tram trials through<br />

the city, during the day and night, with<br />

more than 2,000 hours of testing to be<br />

completed before it’s given the green light<br />

to take passengers.<br />

When the light rail is in service, more than<br />

16,000 people are expected to use the<br />

Church Street stop each day to connect<br />

to more than 60 local eateries, shops,<br />

and businesses.<br />

I can’t wait to get on a tram and experience<br />

it for myself! Make sure to be alert for trams<br />

when walking, riding, or driving near the light<br />

rail and to follow signs and traffic directions.<br />

Community icon passes away<br />

CBD parking meters go cashless<br />

The Cumberland community has paid<br />

tribute to local legend Kevin Horne,<br />

who passed away earlier this month<br />

at 93-years-old.<br />

Born on September 21 on 1930, Horne<br />

trained to become a mechanical engineer<br />

at TAFE before spending his career working<br />

with the Department of Public Works.<br />

Horne moved to Wentworthville after he<br />

married his wife Yvonne, where they raised<br />

their two sons and lived for 65 years.<br />

In his youth he played for the <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

Rugby Club, before later becoming the President<br />

of the Wenty Rugby Club.<br />

After his retirement, Horne dedicated his<br />

life to volunteering in the Wentworthville<br />

community.<br />

At its latest meeting, Cumberland Council<br />

held a minute’s silence in honour of Horne<br />

and his contributions to the local community.<br />

“Kevin loved helping people and the social<br />

interaction that went along with that. He<br />

was the embodiment of community spirit,”<br />

Mayor Lisa Lake said.<br />

“He was awarded Holroyd Citizen of the<br />

Year in 2013 and again in 2015. In 1990 he<br />

received the highest award from the Public<br />

Service Association – the PSA of NSW Gold<br />

Medal.”<br />

Lake added that Horne helped many young<br />

people by acting as a support person for<br />

juveniles in custody when their parents were<br />

not present.<br />

“He supported, guided and advised them<br />

as if they were his own children,” she said.<br />

“He regularly attended police stations late<br />

Kevin Horne has been remembered as the<br />

“embodiment of community spirit”.<br />

complaint and was always happy to lend a<br />

hand.”<br />

Horne was also a founding member of the<br />

Wentworthville Community Garden and the<br />

Wentworthville Computer Pals for Seniors,<br />

and he established a local Neighbourhood<br />

Watch Committee.<br />

Councillor Suman Saha recalled meeting<br />

Horne for the first time at the Wentworthville<br />

Community Garden.<br />

“He always welcomed people with the<br />

biggest smile on his face,” he said.<br />

“Rest in peace Kevin.”<br />

Horne’s funeral will be held on Friday, April<br />

5.<br />

Workers, students and visitors who<br />

drive to the <strong>Parra</strong>matta CBD will<br />

no longer have to look for loose<br />

change when parking, with on-street parking<br />

meters set to be cashless from Monday,<br />

April 1.<br />

Across the CBD, 23 machines at locations<br />

on George, Grose, Hunter, Phillip and<br />

Sorrell Streets will be converted to cashless<br />

machines. Once complete, all 224 parking<br />

meters in the CBD will be converted to cashless.<br />

City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta Lord Mayor Pierre<br />

Esber said these changes will make parking<br />

services more efficient and easier for people<br />

visiting the CBD.<br />

“We know that more people are choosing<br />

to tap and go for more payments since we<br />

started shifting our parking meters over to<br />

cashless two years ago,” Esber said.<br />

“In the past 12 months, about 94 per cent<br />

of parking meter payments were made via<br />

mobile or card.<br />

“Removing coin payments makes sense,<br />

we know how frustrating it is when parking<br />

meters get jammed so this will reduce<br />

parking meter faults and create an easier<br />

experience when parking in the CBD.”<br />

All cashless parking meters will accept<br />

payment via the EasyPark app or Visa,<br />

Mastercard and AMEX.<br />

for the site by introducing site-specific<br />

objectives and controls.<br />

Rosehill debate rolls on<br />

According to one councillor from<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Council, the proposed sale of<br />

land on which Rosehill Gardens racecourse<br />

sits, is a private and commercial matter<br />

between the ATC and State Government,<br />

and Council’s role is not to consult the<br />

community on the matter.<br />

If this is the case, why was any motion put<br />

and debated at last Monday night’s Council<br />

meeting, with those against a proposal to<br />

heritage list Rosehill Gardens particularly<br />

vocal in their opposition and condemnation<br />

of the motion, presenting an (un)official<br />

Council position on the matter that has been<br />

reported in the media?<br />

I was astounded that Council abrogates<br />

to itself the right to make a decision by<br />

simple vote on a motion that carries major<br />

implications for our community, without<br />

there having been neither public discussion,<br />

nor expression of wish, nor even notification<br />

that such a far reaching motion was to be<br />

put. I reside in the <strong>Parra</strong>matta ward and I<br />

am also a member of the ATC. I was formerly<br />

a member of the Sydney Turf Club and have<br />

an interest in the future of our racecourse.<br />

As a member of the former STC, I was<br />

opposed to the takeover of the club by the<br />

Randwick based AJC. Along with a majority<br />

of members I voted that this takeover<br />

proposal be rejected. It is now history that<br />

the members’ wishes were overridden by<br />

our directors and the club was disbanded<br />

and the ATC created. We feared at the time<br />

that this was just a first step to moving all<br />

racing to Randwick. We now feel that our<br />

fears have been vindicated.<br />

The loss of Rosehill racecourse would<br />

be another slap in the face for western<br />

Sydney residents. Rosehill racecourse is an<br />

entertainment facility, an employer, a recreational<br />

space for a large number of regular<br />

western Sydney racegoers. It provides<br />

an opportunity for our youth to enjoy an<br />

elevated social experience, available within<br />

our own backyard so to speak. I can’t see<br />

that a possible racecourse somewhere<br />

south of the magic faraway tree is any sort of<br />

equivalent substitute.<br />

As one who grew up in Blacktown and who<br />

has lived at the same address in Northmead<br />

for over 40 years, I have spent the bulk of my<br />

teaching career in western Sydney. I am now<br />

retired, but I am passionate about the region<br />

and its young people. Here in the <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

ward we have already suffered from high<br />

rise developments all around us and have<br />

accepted the expansion of duplex development<br />

where family homes once stood on<br />

green blocks. We have done enough.<br />

It was very interesting to read last week<br />

about the 25th anniversary of the Olympic<br />

Stadium (<strong>Parra</strong> <strong>News</strong> <strong>March</strong> 19).<br />

I was among the crowd at the 1999 Grand<br />

Final, then saw Cathy Freeman’s incredible<br />

run at the Olympics.<br />

Visits since then have been few and far<br />

between but it is wonderful that Sydney has<br />

this legacy venue from the Olympic Games.<br />

Egg-cellent Easter<br />

There’s plenty on offer for a cracking good Easter weekend<br />

Police will be out in force this long weekend.<br />

With thousands of Australians<br />

expected to hit the road for a getaway<br />

this weekend, NSW Police are<br />

reminding drivers to follow the road rules or<br />

risk copping double demerit points.<br />

Starting from Thursday, <strong>March</strong> 28, and<br />

running until Monday, April 1, Police will be<br />

out in force patrolling the roads.<br />

The double demerit period will see points<br />

apply for all speeding offences, as well as illegal<br />

use of mobile phones, not wearing a seat<br />

belt and riding without a motorcycle helmet.<br />

Double demerit points will also apply to<br />

motorists detected breaching the speed<br />

limits and illegally using mobile phones in<br />

school zones. Police will also be targeting<br />

double-parking or stopping and/or parking in<br />

designated no stopping or no parking areas.<br />

The long-awaited Easter long weekend<br />

has finally arrived – with plenty of<br />

egg-cellent ways to celebrate right<br />

here in <strong>Parra</strong>matta.<br />

You don’t need to leave western Sydney to<br />

start the public holiday off with a bang, with<br />

events like ‘Alice in Easterland’ right on your<br />

doorstep.<br />

Held in the Rumsey Rose Garden at<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta on Monday, April 1, children<br />

from the age of four will be able to enjoy<br />

celebrations with a theatrical twist on the<br />

beloved children’s classic, ‘Alice in Wonderland’.<br />

The event is set to feature Easter bonnet<br />

decorating, a chocolate treat and a small<br />

parade, with parents encouraged to register<br />

their child online before attending.<br />

Of course, it wouldn’t be Easter without the<br />

annual Sydney Royal Easter Show returning<br />

to Sydney Olympic Park.<br />

Along with show’s usual selection of rides,<br />

competitions and food stalls, this year will<br />

see the royal egg hunt join the line-up.<br />

Running for the duration of the show, the<br />

Easter hunt will be located on the corner of<br />

the Grand Parade and Olympic Boulevard<br />

and run from 9am to 9.30pm.<br />

“This is something I’ve wanted to bring to<br />

the Royal Easter Show for years, so it’s very<br />

exciting to finally be doing it,” said creator<br />

Lauren Short, who is the fifth generation of<br />

her family to help bring the magic of Easter<br />

Easter eggs that they can then trade for sweet<br />

treats as they leave the maze.”<br />

The Sydney Royal Easter Show will run<br />

until Tuesday, April 2.<br />

Club <strong>Parra</strong>matta will also be getting into<br />

the Easter spirit over the long weekend.<br />

Plenty of Easter dining specials will be<br />

available for lunch and dinner, including<br />

the Easter peppermint crisp cocktail, with<br />

children able to get their hands on free kids<br />

activity bags on Easter Saturday and Sunday<br />

while stocks last.<br />

Over at Westfield <strong>Parra</strong>matta, the Easter<br />

Bunny itself will be making a very special<br />

appearance on Saturday, <strong>March</strong> 30 from<br />

10am to 4pm, and will be handing out plenty<br />

of chocolates to shoppers.<br />

Five free craft sessions will also be held on<br />

the same day at the shopping centre, from<br />

Despite it being in a different state<br />

entirely, getting to Canberra from<br />

western Sydney can sometimes be<br />

quicker than a trip to the city, making it the<br />

perfect destination for a weekend away.<br />

Earlier this month, I headed down to<br />

Canberra for a two-night stay at Crowne Plaza<br />

Canberra.<br />

Located right in the middle of Canberra’s<br />

CBD, Crowne Plaza Canberra offers the<br />

perfect blend of luxury and affordability.<br />

Upon entering the hotel, you are immediately<br />

greeted with an open and impressive<br />

reception area and 24-hour Business Centre<br />

– complete with premium facilities including<br />

computers with Internet access, printer, fax<br />

and photocopier – that perfectly encapsulate<br />

the feel of the rest of its amenities.<br />

Whether you’re visiting for business or<br />

leisure, Crowne Plaza Canberra well and truly<br />

has it all, with everything from meeting and<br />

event spaces to an outdoor pool and fitness<br />

facilities.<br />

This is also reflected in their rooms, with<br />

ours consisting of all the necessary conveniences<br />

to make your stay as comfortable as<br />

possible, in addition to a sizeable desk just in<br />

case you’re working on the go, meaning you<br />

have no need to leave the hotel.<br />

Thankfully for me, this wasn’t the case,<br />

providing the perfect opportunity to go out<br />

and explore.<br />

Of course, we’ve all heard what they say<br />

about Canberra – it’s boring! But, if you dig a<br />

little deeper, you’ll find that there are plenty<br />

of things to see and do.<br />

As far as tourist attractions go, things like<br />

Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial<br />

and Questacon are necessities in a trip to<br />

Canberra. There are also plenty of art galleries<br />

and museums to visit, including the National<br />

Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery,<br />

and National Library of Australia.<br />

Currently, Crowne Plaza Canberra is offering<br />

a Discovering Ancient Egypt Package,<br />

which includes complimentary tickets to the<br />

must-see ‘Discovering Ancient Egypt’ exhibition<br />

at The National Museum of Australia. So,<br />

we had to head down and check it out.<br />

Just a five-minute drive from the hotel, The<br />

National Museum of Australia is home to a<br />

number of exhibitions which bring to life the<br />

rich and diverse stories of Australia, including<br />

‘Great Southern Land’ and ‘First Australians’.<br />

These exhibitions are all very well done,<br />

utilising interactive elements, galleries and<br />

animations to keep visitors engaged from<br />

start to finish.<br />

Though the newest addition, ‘Discovering<br />

Ancient Egypt’, is contrasting in subject<br />

matter, the style is no different.<br />

The exhibition features objects from the<br />

remarkable collection of the Dutch National<br />

Museum of Antiquities, including ornate<br />

sculptures, rare Book of the Dead scrolls,<br />

exquisite jewellery, and 10 coffins.<br />

Though it isn’t something I’d recommend<br />

taking young children to, given the gravitas<br />

of some of the pieces, I found ‘Discovering<br />

Ancient Egypt’ to provide great insight into<br />

into the everyday life and culture of the<br />

ancient Egyptians.<br />

Crown Plaza Canberra’s location means it’s<br />

also central to plenty of other amenities and<br />

attractions, including the National Zoo and<br />

Aquarium.<br />

Located just outside the city in Yarralumla,<br />

the National Zoo and Aquarium is set on 19<br />

hectares, and is Australia’s only combined<br />

Zoo and Aquarium.<br />

As someone who goes to the zoo or aquarium<br />

just about everywhere I visit, I can well<br />

and truly say that this is one of the best.<br />

Though the aquarium is on the smaller side,<br />

the zoo itself is beautiful and incredibly well<br />

laid out, guaranteeing an<br />

enjoyable few hours.<br />

DURING A WEEKEND IN CANBERRA<br />

As far as food goes, there are also plenty of<br />

great options nearby.<br />

For craft beer fans, or anyone who just wants<br />

a good feed, I can’t recommend BentSpoke<br />

Brewing Co. more. We went here for dinner<br />

one night, and left with full bellies, and a few<br />

six packs.<br />

But, we couldn’t head back to the hotel<br />

without stopping off at Messina, which is<br />

apparently the place to be in Canberra on a<br />

Saturday night, with the line extending out<br />

the door and onto the footpath.<br />

“REDSALT IS CONVENIENT,<br />

REASONABLY PRICED,<br />

AND THE CASARECCE<br />

IS TO DIE FOR”<br />

If you do want a night in, however, I<br />

highly recommend dining at Crowne Plaza<br />

Canberra’s signature Redsalt Restaurant.<br />

It’s convenient, reasonably priced, and the<br />

casarecce is to die for. This is also where you’ll<br />

find a stellar buffet breakfast in the morning,<br />

complete with plenty of delicious hot and cold<br />

options, and a cook to order station if you’re<br />

feeling fancy.<br />

Though Canberra isn’t everyone’s dream<br />

holiday destination, take this as your sign<br />

to give it another go, with Crowne Plaza<br />

Canberra the perfect home base.<br />

One pale girl’s advice: The best<br />

make-up tips and tricks!<br />

If you’re someone who’s struggled<br />

to locate a foundation shade light<br />

enough for you in stores, finds your<br />

skin turns increasingly more orange<br />

over the course of the day, or buys<br />

trending products just to find out they<br />

don’t suit you at all – join the club!<br />

Though makeup is for everybody, and<br />

the beauty of it is that you’re able to<br />

experiment to your heart’s desire, it’s no<br />

secret that products just don’t look the<br />

same on fair skin as they do on those<br />

who fall into the light-medium category.<br />

If you’ve been struggling to build a kit,<br />

or to create a makeup look which you<br />

feel highlights your natural skin tone<br />

rather than hiding it, here are my top<br />

tips – from one pale girl to another.<br />

Incorporate SPF where you can<br />

Whether you’re heading out for a day<br />

outside, or just having the sun on you in<br />

the car, it’s important to remember that<br />

UV rays are your enemy.<br />

For anyone, but particularly those<br />

with fairer skin, it’s so important to<br />

incorporate SPF into your makeup<br />

routine, whether that’s by using<br />

sunscreen before foundation, mixing it<br />

in, or using products that include it for<br />

you.<br />

Match your base products as best as<br />

possible<br />

With so few fair foundation options<br />

available to purchase in stores, especially<br />

on the more affordable end of the<br />

spectrum, I completely understand the<br />

urge to go a shade deeper. However,<br />

finding a foundation that matches<br />

perfectly to both your skin tone and<br />

undertone truly changes the game.<br />

Some of my personal favourites<br />

include the tarte Shape Tape Cloud<br />

Foundation in ‘12N Fair Neutral’, and<br />

the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte<br />

Longwear Foundation in ‘120 – Light<br />

with neutral undertones’.<br />

The same goes for powders – aim for<br />

something truly colourless like the<br />

which comes in plenty of shades so you<br />

can find the one that matches you best,<br />

like the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant<br />

Retouch Setting Powder.<br />

Use a light hand<br />

Though on fair skin you can make<br />

almost any colour work, it’s important<br />

to think twice before going straight in<br />

with blush or bronzer, especially when<br />

there are so many hyper-pigmented<br />

products going around at the moment!<br />

To sheer out a product and make sure<br />

you’re not stuck looking like a clown,<br />

use a less densely packed brush to<br />

apply, or disperse the product on the<br />

back of your hand first before building<br />

it up on the face.<br />

Brown is the new black<br />

Though I do love a big lash or black<br />

eyeliner look, I will admit that it can<br />

look a little harsh on me for day to day.<br />

If you feel the same way, opt for a<br />

brown mascara and eyeliner for a softer<br />

look that still emphasises your eye<br />

shape.<br />

Try before you buy<br />

If you have pale skin, not every trending<br />

product on TikTok is going to suit<br />

you – and that’s okay!<br />

If there is something you’ve been<br />

dying to purchase, head instore first<br />

to get a tester if you can, and leave it<br />

on your skin long enough to see if the<br />

colour shifts through the day.<br />

If you decide that it won’t work for<br />

you, you can then see if there’s a lighter<br />

shade that does, saving you time and<br />

Though truly Australian musicals<br />

like ‘Muriel’s Wedding’, ‘Priscilla’<br />

and ‘The Sapphires’ are few and<br />

far between, a new production is<br />

about to be added to the list, and<br />

it’s heading to Sydney Coliseum.<br />

Claire Warrilow grew up singing and dancing,<br />

training at the Victorian College of the<br />

Arts before transitioning away from theatre to<br />

do voiceover work and audio books, among<br />

other things.<br />

But, when she heard about ‘The Sunshine<br />

Club’, Warrilow said she immediately felt<br />

drawn back, inspired to tell a story of overcoming<br />

adversity.<br />

“I think as a young person, we see a lot of the<br />

change come through Australian society; rapid<br />

changes for the better in terms of how we<br />

treat our First Nations people, and inclusion<br />

and things like that,” she said.<br />

“To be taken to a time not so long ago, the<br />

late 1940s, and to learn about that recent history<br />

and the returning soldiers, how differently<br />

the white soldiers coming back from the war<br />

were treated compared to the black soldiers.”<br />

Set in 1946, ‘The Sunshine Club’ tells the<br />

story of Frank Doyle, an Aboriginal serviceman<br />

who comes home from World War II and<br />

starts The Sunshine Club in hopes of creating<br />

a place where people can dance together –<br />

and where he can sweep Warrilow’s character<br />

Rose off her feet.<br />

‘The Sunshine Club’ is written and directed<br />

by proud Noonuccal Nuugi man Wesley Enoch,<br />

and features 28 songs composed by the<br />

esteemed John Rodgers, all to be sung in an<br />

Australian accent – a fun point of difference<br />

for Warrilow in returning to the field.<br />

“Most musicals are American or British, and<br />

you’re always auditioning in American accents<br />

or working on your British accents, so<br />

this is just so fun, to sing in our own accents!”<br />

she said.<br />

Warrilow added that working on the show<br />

has been a learning curve in many other ways,<br />

being one of only a few white members of the<br />

cast.<br />

“I feel really privileged to have been welcomed<br />

into my cast of First Nations actors<br />

who are so experienced, and have really diverse<br />

backgrounds themselves,” she said.<br />

“To be brought into that and to learn parts of<br />

language and inside jokes or parts of history<br />

and community that I’m not normally privy<br />

to living in urban Melbourne, and to be really<br />

welcomed in has certainly been my experience,<br />

and absolutely our audiences feel that<br />

as well.”<br />

However, she said she’s proud to be able to<br />

tell such an important and seldom known story.<br />

“I know about this country, I know the way<br />

we communicate, the way we sing, so all of<br />

that is very familiar, but really the specificity of<br />

this story about these first mixed-race dance<br />

clubs was just a part of our culture that I really<br />

didn’t know, and it’s a really lovely part of our<br />

culture,” Warrilow said.<br />

Having toured the show across the country<br />

for the past year, Warrilow said that reception<br />

couldn’t have been better, with audiences expressing<br />

their love for the warm experience of<br />

seeing ‘The Sunshine Club’.<br />

In one of their biggest runs of the tour, ‘The<br />

Sunshine Club’ will be hitting the stage at<br />

West HQ’s Sydney Coliseum for eight shows<br />

next month.<br />

“We’re looking forward to really settling in,<br />

getting to know the neighbourhood, having<br />

lots of audiences in at that theatre,” she said.<br />

“I know everyone says this, but you really<br />

will laugh and cry. It’s one of those shows that<br />

will have you chuckling along, grooving along<br />

with the music, and then really get those emotions<br />

Based on a US format, ‘Gordon Ramsay’s<br />

Food Stars’ sees Ramsay and Allis hear pitches<br />

for food and beverage businesses, two of<br />

whom will go on to win $250,000 towards<br />

their dream business. While Ramsay has<br />

appeared on ‘MasterChef Australia’ over the<br />

years, this is the first time he’ll be headlining<br />

his own series Down Under. I’ve watched the<br />

first couple of episodes already and it’s very<br />

Like Sudoku, no single number can<br />

repeat in any row or column. But...<br />

rows and columns are divided by black<br />

squares into compartments. These<br />

need to be filled in with numbers that<br />

complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set<br />

of numbers with no gaps but can be in<br />

any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black<br />

cells remove that number as an option<br />

in that row and column, and are not part<br />

of any straight. Glance at the solution to<br />

see how ‘straights’ are formed.<br />

now get ready for a photography exhibition<br />

that’s a l abou the humans of<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>ma ta.<br />

The personal stories of migration, strength,<br />

sporting achievements and volunteering<br />

in the <strong>Parra</strong>ma ta community are being<br />

celebrated through a brand new exhibition –<br />

‘Community Love’.<br />

Open until June 29 at PHIVE, ‘Community<br />

Love’ is an interactive exhibition that features<br />

photographs of 18 local artists, educators,<br />

business owners, social entrepreneurs,<br />

conservationists, and volunteers.<br />

Along with checking out the selection of<br />

photos, visitors wi l also be able to find out<br />

more about each of the <strong>Parra</strong>ma ta locals by<br />

scanning QR codes to see interviews, videos<br />

One of the people captured in the series<br />

of photos is Tahera Nassrat, a self described<br />

“refugee girl turned boss lady,” who moved<br />

to Australia almost 19 years ago after fleeing<br />

Afghanistan fo lowing the Taliban coming to<br />

coach, Nassrat founded the Afghan Peace<br />

Foundation in 2019 to help refugees and<br />

immigrants lead self-su ficient lives. She said<br />

it’s <strong>Parra</strong>ma ta that has made her who she is<br />

“Refugee girls from Afghanistan, firs thing<br />

that comes to our mind ‘you are an Afghan<br />

girl, you can’t do it’,” she said.<br />

“In <strong>Parra</strong>ma ta, I say, I can do this. You<br />

need to live the life of <strong>Parra</strong>ma ta, you need<br />

to breathe the air of <strong>Parra</strong>ma ta, it makes you<br />

feel confident.<br />

vehicle while she went into Woolworths in<br />

Granvi le. The court heard that they were in<br />

the car for at least 20 minutes before police<br />

were alerted by a concerned witness.<br />

According to police, the front and rear<br />

windows were down about an inch. They say<br />

they managed to force a window open, unlock<br />

the doors and ca l an ambulance to assis the<br />

children who were sweating, flushed and<br />

appeared to be dehydrated.<br />

Hosseini told police that “she had to<br />

purchase something in the store and it did not<br />

height of summer”.<br />

She told the court that there needs to be<br />

general deterrence so other good and caring<br />

parents do no take the same shortcut in the<br />

future.<br />

“The consequences can be devastating,”<br />

Magistrate Thompson said.<br />

Hosseini was convicted of the single o fence<br />

and fined $1000.<br />

TRL touches down in <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

After making its debut in<br />

the Cumberland area last<br />

year, one of Sydney hottest<br />

sports is about to make its mark on<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta.<br />

Touch Rugby League (TRL),<br />

a non-contact version of rugby<br />

league, will touchdown at Eric<br />

Primrose Reserve in Rydalmere<br />

from Wednesday, April 10.<br />

TRL is just like rugby league but<br />

without the tackles. Think kick-offs,<br />

bombs during play and proper playthe-balls.<br />

After being inundated with teams<br />

in the local Strathfield competition,<br />

Competition Manager Genesis<br />

Yuseco had no choice but to expand<br />

TRL’s footprint into western Sydney.<br />

“When we were scouting the area<br />

this time last year for the Merrylands<br />

competition, we discovered<br />

there was a lot of interested people<br />

within <strong>Parra</strong>matta,” he told <strong>Parra</strong><br />

<strong>News</strong>.<br />

“We’ve experienced exponential<br />

growth within Strathfield – we’re<br />

nearly at 30 teams – and we feel we<br />

can expand that to neighbouring<br />

council areas like <strong>Parra</strong>matta.<br />

“Over the last year a lot of people<br />

have expressed interest in wanting<br />

to play and this competition would<br />

be the furthest west available aside<br />

from Campbelltown.”<br />

Targeted towards male and female<br />

players over the age of 16, TRL is<br />

the closest sport to rugby league<br />

without the tackling.<br />

Yuseco describes it as good<br />

old-fashioned backyard footy.<br />

“The beauty of TRL is it’s more<br />

like your backyard-style touch footy<br />

– you can kick and chase, bomb,”<br />

Yuseco, who has a background in<br />

OzTag, said.<br />

“I’ve noticed that most of our<br />

players just enjoy their footy and<br />

don’t want to play tackle. They love<br />

rugby league, and this is the code of<br />

non-contact rugby league that they<br />

enjoy the most.”<br />

With the inaugural winter competition<br />

set to get underway in just<br />

over a fortnight, teams are already<br />

signing up to be a part of all the fun<br />

of Touch Rugby League.<br />

Yuseco said he’s hoping for 8-10<br />

male and mixed teams for the debut<br />

season of TRL <strong>Parra</strong>matta.<br />

“Teams are usually made up of 13<br />

players, with seven on the field per<br />

team for mixed and six on the field<br />

per team for the men’s games,” he<br />

said.<br />

“People are still welcome to sign<br />

up and we are more than happy to<br />

find teams for individuals.<br />

“We’ll be having trial games prior<br />

to the kick-off of the season to get<br />

beginners up to speed with the<br />

rules.”<br />
