Children <strong>and</strong> young people can now enjoy a range of<br />

educational <strong>and</strong> recreational activities over the summer<br />

holidays by attending Academic Camp’s residential<br />

summer experiences in <strong>Taunton</strong>. The camps help to<br />

embed existing skills as well as bring new knowledge<br />

<strong>and</strong> abilities <strong>and</strong> provide a wonderful opportunity to<br />

make new friends, develop confidence <strong>and</strong> encourage<br />

independent thinking.<br />

Since the organisation was set up by Helen Lami in<br />

2008 it has helped 1000s of young people improve their<br />

skills <strong>and</strong> achieve their dreams. The themed camps<br />

taking place in <strong>Somerset</strong> over the school summer<br />

break are specifically designed to foster teamwork <strong>and</strong><br />

explore cultural differences in a fun, caring <strong>and</strong> lively<br />

environment.<br />

“Summer is the perfect time of year for children <strong>and</strong><br />

young people to attend our camps,” said Helen. “It’s<br />

when we get the most daylight, the weather is generally<br />

What You Need To Know.<br />

• The summer camp take place Monday–Thursday,<br />

July 15th-August 22nd, at Queen’s College, Trull<br />

Road, <strong>Taunton</strong>. TA1 4QS.<br />

• The forward-thinking boarding school has a<br />

traditional appearance, leading many to describe it<br />

as being like being on the set of a Harry Potter film!<br />

• As well as modern<br />

classrooms <strong>and</strong> outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

sporting facilities, the College<br />

has a 570-seat theatre,<br />

tennis courts <strong>and</strong> an indoor<br />

swimming pool.<br />

• Children <strong>and</strong> young<br />

fabulous <strong>and</strong> they know they’ve got a long break from<br />

normal school. These elements combine to create a<br />

brilliant atmosphere which is ripe for new friendships<br />

<strong>and</strong> an all-round fun time!”<br />

Helen centres the teaching <strong>and</strong> learning approach of the<br />

camps around content <strong>and</strong> language integrated learning<br />

- a holistic approach that has been shown to motivate<br />

students to be more willing to focus <strong>and</strong> more inspired<br />

to learn.<br />

“We fundamentally believe it is vital to try new things,”<br />

says Helen. “When young people work as a team <strong>and</strong><br />

build practical skills together, it really puts them in a<br />

good position to carve out a great future for themselves<br />

<strong>and</strong> be able to get on with people from all walks of life.<br />

We always see children <strong>and</strong> young people get to the end<br />

of their camp experiences having challenged themselves<br />

in the most amazing ways <strong>and</strong> having made important<br />

friendships along the way. It’s wonderful to see.”<br />

from overseas.<br />

The camps available over the summer range from<br />

adventure camps, where young people get to try out<br />

a range of multi-sports, learn bushcraft, engage in<br />

climbing, archery <strong>and</strong> variety of orienteering activities;<br />

to arts <strong>and</strong> crafts camps, where there’s the opportunity<br />

to explore a range of materials, mediums <strong>and</strong> art forms;<br />

to week-long STEAM camps, which merge the worlds<br />

of science, technology, engineering, art <strong>and</strong> maths to<br />

truly foster creative <strong>and</strong> innovative thinking <strong>and</strong> ideas,<br />

encouraging an imaginative “thinking outside the box”<br />

approach to learning, curiosity <strong>and</strong> development.<br />

Additional excursions are available <strong>and</strong> include trips to<br />

London, Thorpe Park <strong>and</strong> the Eden Project.<br />
