CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
NEIL
GOLDING
7
IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU ALL TO
THE TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM FOR THE
SHOWDOWN 4 IN ASSOCIATION WITH CITY INDEX!
Thanks to our magnificent
partners City Index and
StoneX who have once again
partnered with our biggest
game of the season.
The way that this event
has grown over the last
few years has been truly
extraordinary and I would
like to congratulate all of the
staff who have made this a
true staple in our sporting
calendar. Ticket sales this
year have been better than
ever and I’m sure we all
can’t wait to see the teams
run out in front of a full
stadium which should be very
memorable.
It seems like a long time
since the men were last in
action, but I’m sure we have
all enjoyed watching our
players on Six Nations duty.
It is always a pleasure to
watch them starring on
the international stage,
and the England win over
Ireland will live long in
the memory for many
of us no doubt.
Today we celebrate one of the
true greats of our club. Owen
will lead the team out for his
250th appearance and I’m
sure he will get an incredible
ovation. Between now and
the end of the season we will
be doing plenty to honour one
of the best players to ever put
on a Saracens shirt, and that
will start this afternoon on a
landmark day for him and his
family.
Whilst it has been a while
since our last game, that win
over Exeter at StoneX at the
end of January has put us in
a very strong position and we
cannot wait to see how the
business end of the season
will unfold. These London
derbies are always crucial and
a victory today could take us
back in to the top two!
You will have seen recently
that we have been
announcing some great
bits of recruitment for next
season. We are very excited
about the squad that is being
assembled and we want to
ensure that we can stay at
the forefront of English rugby.
Talking of next season, we
have launched our Seasonal
Memberships already
and sales have been very
encouraging. The atmosphere
at StoneX all season has been
brilliant and we want to keep
improving to make it the best
place to watch rugby in the
United Kingdom.
There is a whole host of
entertainment to enjoy
today both on and off the
pitch! Whether it’s a live DJ
performance from James
Haskell or the amazing
London Community Gospel
Choir, there is something
for everyone here at this
amazing stadium.
We’re all incredibly excited by
the day ahead of us, make
sure you enjoy it and hopefully
cheer us on to a victory!
Enjoy the game!
CAPTAIN’S COLUMN
OWEN
FARRELL
GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO THE
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM FOR THE
SHOWDOWN 4 IN ASSOCIATION WITH CITY INDEX!
This is always one of the
biggest days of the season
and definitely one that we
look out for as soon as the
fixtures come out.
The club have always pushed
the boundaries when it comes
to big showpiece events and
to run out in front of over
60,000 of you today will be
an amazing feeling. The squad
really do appreciate all the
hard work that goes on behind
the scenes and hopefully we
can make it a day for you all to
remember.
The atmosphere at this
stadium over the last few
years has been extraordinary
and with even more tickets
sold this time around I’m sure
it will be even better. It is an
amazing stadium to visit and
incredible to play in! There is
plenty happening all around
the stadium today so make
sure you enjoy it all and then
cheer as loud as you can, it
really does make a difference!
It has been brilliant to have
everyone back together this
week after the Six Nations
came to a close. It was
amazing to watch the win
over Ireland from the stands
and as always, everyone at
the club was very proud to see
our group representing their
countries.
This part of the season is
always incredibly exciting
and with so much to play for
we can’t wait to get stuck
in to the business end of the
campaign.
Our matches against
Harlequins are always
eventful. Both teams have
enormous respect for each
other and with so many world
class players in their squad we
know we’ll have to be at our
best to come away with the
points this afternoon.
It is an incredible honour to
be playing my 250th game
for the club this afternoon.
Saracens is unbelievably
special to myself and my
family, and as I said recently it
is a very difficult place to leave
but I am very proud to be
reaching his landmark today
and let’s hope it’s a winning
one!
Thanks to everyone for all of
your kind messages. I can’t
wait to get back out there
today and I hope you enjoy
everything The Showdown has
to offer.
See you all after - enjoy the
game!

SARACENS AND TOTTENHAM
HOTSPUR PARTNERSHIP
15
THE TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM
IS MOST WELL KNOWN FOR BEING
ASSOCIATED WITH THE ROUND BALL,
BUT TODAY THE OVAL ONE WILL BE
IN CHARGE AS WE HOST OUR THIRD
MATCH IN THE ICONIC GROUND.
On the pitch there are of
course the matchups such
as Owen Farrell v Marcus
Smith, Billy Vunipola v Alex
Dombrandt, Mako Vunipola v
Joe Marler and Ivan Van Zyl v
Danny Care, but off the pitch
there will be even more going
on to make it a day to savour.
The four main LED video
screens in the ground, which
total more than 1,000 square
metres, are the largest in
Western Europe, plus inside
the concourse there are 1,800
HD TVs for fans to see all of
the build up.
115 turnstiles provide
access to 65 food and drink
outlets, which can serve an
astonishing 10,000 beers per
minute from their very own
microbrewery.
We hope you enjoy your day!
SCENE SETTER
You only have to look back on
last weekend’s final round of
the Guinness Six Nations for
an example of how dangerous
it is to put personal milestone
ahead of team success.
George North, one of the
modern-day heroes of Welsh
rugby, became the story of
the week in the build-up to
the game against Italy in
Cardiff after announcing his
international retirement.
It was a repeat of two years
earlier when Dan Biggar won
his 100th Welsh cap against
the Azzurri and Alun Wyn
Jones reached 150. Wales lost
for the first time at home to
Italy in 2022 and North had
his 121st and final cap ruined
by another defeat, as well as
an injury, seven days ago.
16
17
So, as all Saracens fans
prepare to honour captain
Owen Farrell on the occasion
of his 250th appearance
for the club at which he
has played with so much
distinction as man and
boy for almost 16 years,
just remember the biggest
celebration will be at the end
of the game after the team
wins.
And win it, they must, to
stay right in the mix for a top
four finish in the Gallagher
Premiership. It is tight at the
top, with a mere seven points
splitting seven teams with six
games to go.
As things stood coming into
Round 13, the ‘Showdown’
features Fourth (Saracens)
v Second (Harlequins). On
Friday at Franklin’s Gardens
it will be First (Northampton
Saints) v Fourth (Saracens).
It is a massive seven days for
Mark McCall and his team
as they attempt to earn a
home semi-final to boost
their chances of successfully
defending their Premiership
title.
Jamie George, Maro Itoje,
Elliot Daly, Theo Dan and
Ben Earl are all returning
from England duty, Andy
Christie has been playing with
Scotland and Nick Tompkins
with Wales throughout the
Six Nations. Their return is
bound to raise the quality
of the squad and increase
McCall’s selection options.
Returning for Harlequins
will be England’s new 100
cap scrum half Danny
Care, Marcus Smith, Joe
Marler, Alex Dombrandt and
Chandler Cunningham-South
from Steve Borthwick’s
English camp, while Dillon
Lewis has been packing down
for Wales.
The Quins lost last time out
in the Premiership when they
were pipped 20-19 at home
by Leicester Tigers at the end
of January. Since then, they
have played two friendlies,
winning 22-13 at London
Scottish before losing 43-35
at home to Munster.
When the two teams met at
the Twickenham Stoop on
18 November it ended in a
thumping 38-10, six tries to
one win for McCall’s men. A
repeat performance today
would be the perfect way
to celebrate Owen Farrell’s
250th game.

Stainless steal.
In 1972, famed designer Gérald Genta created an oxymoron. Priced more than many
precious metal rivals, the ‘luxury stainless steel timepiece’ was not an immediate
success. But eventually its tough, elegant body, integrated bracelet and patterned
dial caught on. A watch that dressed up for dinner. Or down, at the pool. Today’s
40mm, base automatic of that original watch costs £22,850 more than the new
‘Twelve’ - named for its dodecagon-sided bezel and rear lock ring. Our watch is
thinner, goes deeper and offers a choice of C1/BL Grade X1-lumed dials. A polished,
brushed and sandblasted case of daylight (and night time) robbery?
Do your research.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW
ANYTHING ABOUT
THE PEDIGREE OF THE
HARLEQUINS SIDE
THEN JUST REFLECT
ON THE FACT THERE
WERE FIVE OF THEIR
PLAYERS ON THE PITCH
IN THOSE DRAMATIC
CLOSING MINUTES
WHEN ENGLAND BECAME
THE FIRST TEAM THIS
SEASON TO BEAT GRAND
SLAM CHASING IRELAND.
Joe Marler came on in the
front row, skipper Alex
Dombrandt and Chandler
Cunningham-South bolstered
the back row, Danny
Care added his wealth of
experience at scrum half
to win his 100th cap and,
of course, Marcus Smith
dropped the goal to win the
game.
They were all at the heart
of the Quins side that won
the Gallagher Premiership
title for only the second time
in 2021 in that epic 40-38
win over the then reigning
champions Exeter Chiefs.
Care and Marler both go
back to the 2012 triumph at
Twickenham over Leicester
Tigers and as the senior
members of the 30+ club in
the Premiership would love to
make it a hat-trick.
That is definitely a possibility
this season given they
currently sit in second place
in the table. Northampton
Saints lead with 44 points,
Quins and Bath are tied on 37,
with Saracens in the fourth
play-off place at present on
36. It is so tight this season
that there are only seven
points between second and
eighth. That shows how
crucial today’s game is going
to be in the race for the playoffs
and the title.
‘The Harlequin FC’ was
formed in 1970 as a reworking
of the ‘Hampstead
Rugby Club’, which had begun
life three years earlier. Since
then, they have developed
into one of the biggest brand
names in global club rugby,
with teams all over the world
adopting their name. There
is a Harlequin FC in Kenya,
Bath, Cardiff and Belfast
have teams with Harlequins
as part of their title, and
there is even a team in
Hamilton, New Zealand.
They have been in the topflight
of the club rugby in
England forever and have
featured in 35 of the 36
seasons of the Premiership.
Only Bath, Gloucester and
Leicester Tigers have a 100%
record, with Sarries boasting
31 campaigns.
There is now an even bigger
international flavour to their
side given Louis Lynagh, son
of Saracens legend Michael,
is now a fully-fledged Italian
international, having made
his debut in the Azzurri’s epic
win over Scotland in Round 4
of the Six Nations.
Andrew Esterhuizen is a
World Cup winning centre
from South Africa, Dillion
Lewis and Jarrod Evans are
both Welsh internationals,
Santiago Garcia Botta has
won 34 caps for Argentina
and Joe Launchbury has
been there and done almost
everything in his career.
31
So far this season they have
won seven out of 12 games
in the Premiership, although
they suffered a six try, 38-10
home defeat by the ‘Men in
Black’ on 18 November - and
are through to the Round of
16 in the Investec Champions
Cup. They will host Glasgow
Warriors at the Twickenham
Stoop on 5 April.
No strangers to big matches
against Saracens, the Quins
are back for the ‘Showdown’
at Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium for the second
time. It will be the 10th time
the two sides have met in
a Premiership fixture away
from Saracens home venue
and the score to date is 8-1 to
Mark McCall’s men!

WT: 118kg / 18st 7lbs
HONOURS: England (15 caps)
One of the men who has tried
to fill the gap in the England
back row vacated by Billy
Vunipola. His battle from No
8 with the Saracens back row
is going to be crucial to the
outcome today. The Quins
skipper has real explosive
powers and expect fireworks
when he starts charging. He
made an immediate impact
when he joined Quins from
Cardiff Met, where he won five
caps and scored five tries as
a second row for Wales U20.
Having excelled in his first
season in elite rugby, he was
also named in the BT Sport
Team of the Year and joined
clubmates Marcus Smith and
Joe Marchant in the England
XV that met the Barbarians at
Twickenham May 2019, where
he scored two tries. He made
Eddie Jones’ 2019 World Cup
training squad but didn’t get
a trip to Japan. He has 42
tries in 95 Premiership outings,
including one in the semi-final
and final of the Premiership
when Quins won their second
Premiership title in 2021. He
made his England debut in a
70-14 victory over Canada at
Twickenham and now has 15
caps.
DOB: 30.03.1994 (28)
HT: 1.93m / 6’ 4”
WT: 113kg / 17st 9lbs
HONOURS: South Africa (16 caps)
The monster in the Quins’
midfield, the South Arican
recently announced he would
be returning home a year early
for family reasons. Cue a heavy
sigh of relief among centres
at every Premiership club!
During his time at Quins he
has established himself as one
of the most potent attacking
weapons in the Premiership.
Capped 16-by the Springboks,
he not only hurtles his near
18 stone, 6’4” frame into the
heart of defences to make
huge holes, but also has the
full range of skills required of a
world class midfield player. He
was part of the South African
World Cup squad in France
earlir in the season. He joined
Quins from the Sharks in 2020
and helped his new club win
the Premiership title at the end
of his first season. A year later
he was crowned the Rugby
Players’ Association’s ‘Player’s
Player of the Year’.

DOB: 14.02.1999 (25)
HT: 1.7m / 5’ 7’
WT: 81.82kg / 12st 10lbs
HONOURS: England (30 caps)
Is he the man to fill Owen
Farrell’s No 10 shirt for
England? Maybe we’ll find out
today! Supremely talented
and confident, he is the man
who makes Quins tick. A great
opportunist, he likes nothing
better than to turn defence into
attack. When he’s got the ball
the alarm bells ring in opposing
defences and the crowds sit up
in their seats. Where Faz has
ice running through his veins
and incalculable experience,
Smith is hot-blooded and
loves to entertain. He quickly
established himself as one of
the best playmakers in the
Gallagher Premiership and
became the second-youngest
Premiership debutant in
history, behind George Ford,
when he made his Harlequins
bow against London Irish
aged 18 years and 200 days in
September 2017. His England
test debut came against the
United States in 2021 having
earned his selection after firing
Harlequins to the Gallagher
Premiership title. He was a late
call-up to the 2021 British &
Irish Lions squad which toured
South Africa and now has 30
caps.
JOE MARLER
POSITION: Prop
DOB: 07.07.1990 (33)
HT: 1.83m / 6’ 0”
WT: 120 kg / 18st 13lbs
HONOURS: England (92 caps)
One of the game’s great
characters, he remains one
of the top loose head props
in the world game. As well
as extending his England
cap count into the nineties
during this year’s Six Nations
tournament, he also went
through the 200 game
milestone in the Premiership.
Has been a thorn in the side of
Saracens ever since he made
his first appearance against
them 14 years ago. You know
exactly what he is going to
bring at scrum time, but you
can never be sure what sort of
haircut he’s going to turn up
with. A veteran of three World
Cup campaigns, he played in
the 2019 final and appeared
in six of the seven games that
saw England win the bronze
medal in 2023. He was a Grand
Slammer in 2016 and has
helped England claim two more
Six Nations titles during his 12
years international career. A
one club man, he is closing in on
300 games for Quins.
DANNY CARE
POSITION: Scrum Half
DOB: 02.01.1987 (37)
HT: 1.73m / 5’ 8”
WT: 84kg / 13st 3lbs
HONOURS: England (101 caps)
He is incredibly in his 18th
season at Quins and had
two campaigns at Leeds
Tykes before heading to
The Twickenham Stoop
and becoming an honorary
southerner. Described as a
mix between senior pro and
national treasure, he surpassed
100 caps for England in the
recent Six Nations. His first
appearance in the Premiership
came against Saracens on
10 September 2005 as a
replacement for Leeds, coming
on to replace Justin Marshall.
Since then he has gone on to
make 278 appearances in the
tournament, all bar 10 of them
for Harlequins. He has won a
Grand Slam and two more Six
Nations titles with England,
two Premiership finals with the
Quins and a European Challenge
Cup, and helped England finish
third at the World Cup earlier
this season. He reached 99
caps for his country in the third
round of the 2024 Six Nations
16 years on from his debut in
New Zealand in 2008. One to
keep a very close eye on both on
the pitch and from the stands.
Loves nothing better than to
tap and go - and when he goes,
he’s gone!
SARACENS SUPPORTERS
ASSOCIATION (SSA)
E Saracens Supporters Association
D @sarriessupport
Q ssa_racens
A very good afternoon to you
from all of us in the SSA, and
we’re delighted to welcome
you all to Sarries’ home
from home, the stunning and
distinctly state-of the-art
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium,
for Showdown 4, the latest of
our annual showpiece games
and which today features our
old friends and always keen
rivals Harlequins!
If you’ve been to the stadium
before, either for a Spurs
match, an NFL game, to see
Sarries play or even to attend
a musical event, you’ll know
what to expect from the
wonderful facilities, a fantastic
selection of food (that rivals
the marvellous fare served up
at StoneX!), and a fine range
of drink options including craft
beers from the stadium’s inhouse
brewery; be sure to pay
a visit to the Goal Line Bar,
the longest in any stadium in
Europe.
If you’re here for the first time,
though, we hope you’re every
bit as knocked out as we were
on our first visit when you walk
out into the arena.
We wish everyone, be they
decked out in black and red,
Quins’ famous multi-colours
or are “neutrals” here to see
the best of English club rugby
in stunning surroundings,
a great day and we hope
you all leave here with
memories of an exciting
match between two teams
packed with internationals as
both clubs welcome back to
their matchday squads those
players who have spent the
past six weeks in the colours
of their countries taking part
in such an exciting Men’s Six
Nations; there is so much to
play for today as both Sarries
and Quins enter the “business
end” of the season in strong
contention for a play off spot
and every point counts!
We’d like to extend a warm
welcome firstly to the players,
coaching team and of course
the supporters of the team
their fans call in song the
Mighty Quins - we know you’ll
be here in huge numbers as
always and there’s no doubt at
all that you’ll contribute hugely
to a great atmosphere as you
get behind your players – and
secondly to those of you who
may be attending your first
rugby union match today; we
hope you’ll instantly fall in love
with this wonderful game of
ours and remember that if
the rugby bug does bite you,
StoneX isn’t too far away from
where you’re reading this….
Congratulations while we write
to all the Sarries players who
have contributed to an exciting
Men’s Six Nations and in
particular that fantastic display
against Ireland when our very
own Ben Earl pipped Maro to
Man of the Match!!!
ROUND-UP
Since we last wrote, Sarries
have made two excellent frontrow
additions to the men’s
squad, one being the familiar
face of Rhys Carre who returns
to StoneX from Cardiff for a
second spell after spending the
2019-20 with us before deciding
to return to South Wales during
which time he earned 20 caps
for Wales, while the second is
Phil Brantingham who moves to
North London from Newcastle
Falcons where he has gained
a reputation as one of the
Premiership’s most exciting
prospects, and who many of
you will remember put in such
an impressive performance
against us at Kingston Park
last November.
Another new but familiar face
to arrive at StoneX since our
last edition is none other than
Bryony Cleall, who hooks up
once again with sister Poppy in
the black and red; Bryony, who
of course won two Premier 15s
titles during her first spell with
Sarries, originally left us for
Wasps in 2021 before moving
on to Harlequins the following
year.
Great to have you back, Bryony
and Rhys, and welcome Phil!
Today will of course be our
first Men’s game since that
highly entertaining Friday Night
Lights friendly encounter with
36
37
Leinster, when Sarries ran
out 31-19 winners, while, due
to the Six Nations, the men’s
last competitive encounter
was all the way back on 27th
January when in another highly
enjoyable game Exeter Chiefs
were dispatched 40-22 to take
Sarries into the play-off places.
The Women have been
somewhat busier over recent
weeks, with three consecutive
home wins against Trailfinders
on 3rd February (48-17),
Harlequins on 10th February
(29-24) and Leicester Tigers
on 3rd March (54-19) followed
up by a tough 35-10 away
defeat to Bristol Bears on 10th
March – at the time of writing
and going into the Six Nations
break Sarries are second in the
table, 14 points behind leaders
Gloucester-Hartpury but with a
game in hand.
We were thrilled and very, very
proud to see that when the
Women’s Six Nations squad
was announced no fewer than
NINE Sarries had been included
– congratulations to you all!
The Mavericks have also been
in action in the Netball Super
League, with as we write a
48-48 draw with Cardiff, a
53-44 home win over Leeds
Rhinos, a 59-48 away defeat
to Surrey Storm and a 46-66
home defeat by Loughborough
Lightning.
NEXT UP
The next Men’s game will
be away to Northampton
Saints this coming Friday 29th
March at 19.45– although
Easter Weekend will present
challenges in terms of travel,
we hope to see as many of you
as possible at the game!
The Women are now on an
extended break until 11th May
when they play Sale Sharks at
StoneX.
The Mavericks were due to play
Team Bath away on 15th March
but the result is not known as
we write, with a home another
away fixture, with Glasgow
Sirens, today before returning
to Hatfield on Friday 29th
March to face Severn Stars.
WAS IT THE GAME
IN WHICH THE
BUBBLE BURST
IN HARLEQUINS’
TITLE CHASE IN
2019? THERE IS
NO DOUBT THAT
THE 27-20 DEFEAT
AT THE LONDON
STADIUM IN THE
PRE-SHOWDOWN
‘SHOWDOWN’ HURT.
It was Round 17 of 22 in
the 2018-19 campaign and
meant the Quins suffered
back-to-back defeats after
stringing together a run of
five victories.
They piled on the pressure
in front of a crowd of 42,717
at the home of West Ham
United on 23 March 2019 and
were good value for their 17-6
interval lead. That forced the
‘Men in Black’ to dig deep in
the second half to overhaul
their 11-point deficit before
coming out on top 27-20!
It was the day big Will
Skelton came up trumps
with two tries that broke
the hearts of the Quins and
their posse of supporters.
SARACENS 27
HARLEQUINS 20
LONDON STADIUM (42,717)
It was an error-strewn
first-half from the ‘home’
team and Quins looked or
than capable of avenging
their 25-20 defeat at the
Twickenham Stoop in Round
6. They took full advantage
of a misjudgement by Alex
Lozowski at the end of the
first half when he kicked the
ball out thinking the clock
had gone red.
Referee JP Doyle was told
there was still one second to
play and Danny Care needed
no second invitation to
snipe around the side of the
ensuing ruck to score.
Sarries then had two tries
disallowed - the first after
Doyle felt he had impeded
Chris Robshaw’s attempted
tackle on Billy Vunipola before
he crossed, and the second
when Care and Liam Williams
became involved in a scrap
off the ball as David Strettle
touched down.
Care and Williams, were
both sent to the sin-bin for
foul play and another great
chance was lost for Saracens.
Then Skelton turned on the
power and his two tries
changed the game.
Saracens director of rugby
Mark McCall: “The players
were really calm and clear
at half-time about what
we needed to do better.
There was a big curve ball
just before half-time when
they scored that try to make
it 17-6, but the reaction
of the team in the second
half was fantastic. There
was that curve ball and a
couple of disallowed tries
39
and we could have felt sorry
for ourselves but we didn’t
and we became the kind of
team we want to be. I don’t
know what happened with
the clock just before halftime,
but I thought Billy’s try
was a try. JP Doyle doesn’t
disrupt Chris Robshaw at
all. And I don’t really know
why David Strettle’s try was
disallowed. It doesn’t matter
in some respects because we
took charge and scored right
away.”
Harlequins head of rugby Paul
Gustard: “It was a good first
40 minutes, but not even an
average second 40. We were
almost the worst version
of ourselves. There was
bickering, we got frustrated
and our set-piece didn’t
function. We were clinging
on. We’ve got a point and
our season isn’t defined by
Saracens away, but this was
frustrating.”
THE INTERVIEW
OWEN
FARRELL
OWEN FARRELL IS LOOKING
TO MAKE IT A FAIRYTALE
ENDING AS THE BUSINESS
END OF THE GALLAGHER
PREMIERSHIP AND INVESTEC
CHAMPIONS CUP COMES
AROUND, AND DRAWS
TOWARDS THE END OF ONE OF
THE GREATEST CAREERS IN
THE HISTORY OF SARACENS.
40
41
As boy and man, Owen has
been at the centre of so many
of the successes the ‘Men
in Black’ have enjoyed on so
many fronts. His approach to
today’s ‘Showdown’ against
London rivals Harlequins will
be exactly the same as when
he made his senior debut at
the age of 17.
To be more precise, he was
17 years and 11 days old
when he lined up against
Llanelli Scarlets in the EDF
Energy Cup. It ended in a
26-17 defeat, but that game
launched one of the greatest
English rugby stories of the
past 20 years.
As a kid growing up in Wigan,
he dreamed of following his
father, Andy, into playing
rugby league for his world
renowned, hometown club.
Then his dad decided to switch
codes and sign for Saracens in
2005 and Owen found himself
moving to St George’s School,
in Harpenden, and into the
Saracens Academy. He hadn’t
played rugby union up until
that point yet was quickly
drafted into the England
Under 16 squad.
Fast forward to last year
and he had become the third
42
England player after Jason
Leonard and Ben Youngs to
play 100 times for his country
and had surpassed Jonny
Wilkinson as England’s alltime
highest points scorer
and the second highest in
world rugby after Dan Carter,
with a combined total of
1271 between England and
the British & Irish Lions. He
led England to third place at
the 2023 World Cup having
also been captain when they
reached the 2019 final in
Japan.
But while he ranks alongside
the modern day greats of the
professional game on a global
stage, few can challenge his
dominance of domestic and
European club rugby. As he
counts down the games he
has left to play with Sarries
before heading across The
Channel this summer to join
Racing 92 in the Top 14, he
can look back on a glittering
career.
Try to rival this for a list of
achievement:
Saracens – 249 games
2017, 2018
World Rugby Player of the
Year Nominee: 2012, 2016,
2017
He not only inherited his
father’s brilliant rugby
skills, but he has also taken
on board his leadership
qualities, captaining both
club and country with equal
distinction. When you watch
him in a Sarries shirt – and
today will be no different –
he never asked anyone to do
anything he wouldn’t do and
always leads by example. It
would be a fitting send-off
for him if he could guide the
club to a third league and
European Cup double.
Today will feel emotional as
he plays in his ninth big game
for Saracens at Wembley,
London Stadium and the
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
So how is he feeling:
“It feels strange here at the
moment. It’s always going
to be tough leaving a place
that’s been your home since
you were 14,” said Owen.
“This is where I’ve done a lot
of my growing up and where
I met a lot of my friends, and
obviously started my family
here as well. So, it’s a difficult
one on the one hand, but also
an exciting move for us as a
family on the other.
“It’s never been something
that we as a family had
thought about doing before
but for the first time we’ve
decided that it would be
good for us to experience
something different. It felt
like the timing was right,
although the flip side of that
is that Saracens is a very
difficult place to leave.
“The club have been fantastic
with my whole family, not just
me throughout this year. It
really counts for something
when they care about nothing
more than the person. They’ve
been very understanding with
me.”
Racing 92 have signed a one
of a kind, one of the most
competitive players ever seen
on an England rugby field. If
they want to improve their
results, title winning chances
and impact in the Top 14 and
beyond, then they’ve brought
in the perfect catalyst.
As for Saracens, Owen Farrell
will remain in the hearts and
minds of every player and
coach he has ever worked
with and certainly every
supporter.
But only after he has pulled
out all the stops to win today
and has guided his troops
as deep as they can go in
delivering two more major
pieces of silverware this
season.

It’s set to be Packer’s 100th
cap for her country, as she
continues to build up the
accolades in what has thus
far been a superb season
for her and her chargers in
Sarries colours.
WOMEN’S ROUND UP
THE 2024 GUINNESS WOMEN’S SIX
NATIONS GETS UNDERWAY THIS
AFTERNOON, WITH SARACENS CO-CAPTAIN
MARLIE PACKER LEADING HER SIDE INTO
BATTLE TOMORROW AFTERNOON IN ITALY.
It seems a long time ago that
the Allianz Cup campaign
kicked off in late-September,
with a high-scoring defeat to
Harlequins.
Since then, bar two blemishes
to the copybook against
Gloucester-Hartpury and
Bristol, it’s been all about
the winning feeling for the
women in black and red.
After that initial defeat, cup
victories followed in stunning
fashion, with bonus-point
wins against Loughborough,
Trailfinders and Gloucester-
60
Hartpury to secure top spot
in the group and with it, a
home cup semi-final against
Exeter when the side return
to action in three weeks’ time.
Should they win that fixture,
then they will meet one
of Bristol or Gloucester-
Hartpury in the cup final two
weeks later, with a chance to
pick up the first silverware of
the season.
The cup side though, is made
up of very different personnel
to the Allianz PWR league
team, as the competition
takes place during the
international breaks in the
women’s calendar.
For the plethora of
internationals within
the Sarries ranks, they
returned to action against
Loughborough in the
opening match of the league
campaign in mid-November.
A 48-17 demolition of the
Midlanders set the tone
for a season that has seen
Alex Austerberry’s side
score points at will. In fact,
they have scored the most
points in the league and
conceded the fewest, further
reinforcing their attacking
prowess.
A victory over Trailfinders
followed the week after, as
the side put 50 points on
61
the league newbies, before
arguably one of the highlights
of the season, as Harlequins
were left without a single
point to their name at the
Stoop, as a Sophie de Goede
inspired side secured a 31-0
victory over their London
rivals.
The good times kept on
coming, with a big victory
away at Leicester Tigers,
before a crowd of over
1500 saw the side fight
back at home, to pull away
and secure a 32-10 victory
over Bristol. That match
again saw de Goede at her
all-action best, with young
fly-half Amelia MacDougall
controlling things superbly,
despite being just 18-yearsold.
The Christmas Cracker
certainly delivered and Sarries
headed into Christmas at the
top of the tree.
League matters resumed
in early January, with a
barnstorming 69-3 victory
over Sale Sharks up in
Manchester, before the side
put to bed the demons from
last season’s semi-final
defeat, with a 39-26 victory
over Exeter Chiefs.
A first league defeat
followed a week later against
Gloucester-Hartpury, but
the side responded well,
with another big victory
over Trailfinders, before a
record crowd of 3071 saw the
side beat a much-improved
Harlequins 29-24 at StoneX
Stadium, with McKinley Hunt
helping herself to a hattrick.
In many ways, it’s been a
stop-start season for Sarries,
with a number of breaks in
the schedule due to there
only being nine teams in the
league.
It’s fair to say there was a bit
of rustiness against Leicester
at home, despite the side
pulling clear to secure a 54-19
victory. With just 15 minutes
to go, there were only two
points in this one, but Sarries
kept to their structures well,
with Jess Breach and Paige
Farries cutting loose to secure
the win.
Defeat followed a few weeks
ago to Bristol, but Sarries
have already done enough
to confirm their place in the
league semi-finals, ahead
of the resumption of the
competition in May.
A tough run-in sees the side
face Sale, Exeter, Gloucester-
Hartpury and Loughborough,
but they know that their
destiny is in their own hands,
with 12 points from those
fixtures likely to be enough
to secure a crucial home
advantage in the semi-finals.
STARTED IT ALL
23RD SEPTEMBER 1989. THE DATE THAT SARACENS
WOMEN PLAYED THEIR FIRST EVER MATCH.
Whilst the men’s side were
looking forward to their first
season back in the top-flight
of English rugby, the women’s
side were preparing for their
first ever match.
The story of how the women’s
side was first set-up and the
inspirational women who
helped push for the creation
of the side have been etched
into history, but what of the
other women who made up
the first ever squad?
Their opponents that
afternoon were a Northern
Select XV, that included the
likes of the legendary Gill
Burns in their ranks.
The Saracens side had a fair
few iconic names in it too
though, with Liza Burgess
captaining the first ever team
from number 8.
THE MATCH THAT
Newport pair Mari Brown
and Pip Atkinson both played
for the side, whilst Claire
Willietts of Wasps started on
the left wing.
That Saracens side though
was packed with international
talent. 10 of the squad of 21
were internationals, including
half-back pair and founding
members Emma Mitchell
(England) and Amanda
Bennett (Wales.)
Mitchell’s twin sister Jane (a
fellow England international,)
lined up at fullback for the
side.
The day itself saw the
women’s fixture played as a
precursor to the men’s fixture
against Orrel at Bramley
Road and they more than put
on a show, with a 22-0 victory
to kickstart the women’s
game at Saracens.
Founding member Emma
Mitchell explained that the
point of the fixture was to
showcase what a women’s
side would bring to the club
and to entice the Saracens
fanbase to get behind the
team.
“We agreed that it would be
good to set up an exhibition
match to show what
women’s rugby was about.
The club was incredibly
accommodating. This was the
season when Floyd Steadman
was captaining the men’s
team, and we played the
match at what was a fairly
packed Bramley Road. We
had to go and change in the
old Cricket Pavilions as the
men were in the changing
62
63
rooms, but that didn’t matter.
It was a good game and we
managed to get a lot of great
players along. We didn’t have
a full 15 at the time, but it
was a very good side. The
point of the match was to
try and win over the fans.
We wanted to let them
know that we were there
and that our season was
starting.”
The wins kept on coming
for the side, as they began
their inaugural campaign in
stunning fashion, with six
straight victories, scoring 279
points in the process.
It was a season filled with
success for the side and
Mitchell highlighted that the
side was also able to attract
novice rugby players who had
been playing other sports.
“We were put into the second
division straight away and
won promotion in the first
season. We reached the
cup semi-finals as well, but
we were able to establish
ourselves quite quickly.
Quite a few of us had played
together before, but there
were others who were
completely new and came
from other sports.”
Whilst success continued in
the league, the side quickly
made their mark in the cup
too, as they travelled to
Wales in the third round.
“We had a cup game against
Cardigan. We went there and
back from Bramley Road.
The pitch probably wasn’t
playable, but we played on
it anyway. The whole town
turned out to watch it and
I can’t repeat some of the
things we heard from the
touchline! We won 4-0 after a
quick tap from Sam Robson.
It was a bit of an adventure,
but we had a bus to travel
over in. It was all in one day
which wouldn’t happen now,
but for us it was a great day.”
A thumping victory over Sale
in the quarter finals saw the
side progress to the final four,
where they agonisingly lost to
Richmond by a solitary point.
Despite that disappointment
in the cup, the side secured
promotion to the first division
for the 1990/91 season.
Mitchell reflected on that
first season as a time
she remembered fondly,
explaining that key support
from within the club enabled
the side to continue to
progress.
“It was brilliant. We were
playing with our best friends
and with some of the best
players in the country. A lot of
us moved across into the area
to play. The lady who pretty
much ran the club behind
the scenes was a German
lady called Chris. She pretty
much did everything and we
very quickly realised that we
needed to win her over, but
she loved us. She realised that
we were working full-time
and training but would come
on the Sunday to support and
cook the food. She wouldn’t
let a bad word be said about
the women’s team and trust
me; you didn’t want to cross
her! It was great fun and we
played great rugby.”
Success has duly followed
for the women’s team in the
34 years since that inaugural
match, but it is on the
shoulders of those giants that
the foundations have been
firmly built.

But today will be slightly
different. With the battle
for a top four finish in the
Gallagher Premiership
heating up, the sight of a
Harlequins jersey on the
other side of the field, and
the knowledge that the
clock is counting down on
his incredible career with the
‘Men in Black’, he will want to
make the most of his 250th
game for the club.
That he will reach such a
number in a game being
played at one of the finest
sporting arenas in the UK
couldn’t be more appropriate.
His service deserves such a
fitting stage on which to play
– another ‘Showdown’ for a
Saracens superstar.
OWEN FARRELL HAS NEVER BEEN
ONE TO BE OVERLY CONCERNED WITH
PERSONAL MILESTONES. IT IS THE NEXT
PLAY, THE NEXT TACKLE THE NEXT JOB
THAT HAS ALWAYS DRIVEN HIM ON.
The Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium is a far cry from
the Vicarage Road ground of
2008 when Owen made his
debut at the age of 17 years,
11 days against Scarlets. His
first game was played in
opposition to the Scarlets,
Wales and British & Irish Lions
outside half legend Stephen
Jones. His 250th should be
against his old English rival,
Marcus Smith.
Owen has never been the
one to take any easy options.
The tougher the task, the
more he rolls up his sleeves,
grits his teeth and relishes
the battle. He may have lost
on his record breaking first
outing for the club, in an EDF
Energy Cup tie, but the astute
former Daily Telegraph rugby
correspondent Mick Cleary
was very much on points
when he ended his report
of that game by stating:
“Scarlets won the day but
Saracens may yet reap the
long-term benefit.”
The Saracens director of
rugby at the time, Eddie
Jones, said: "Owen's definitely
got the right attitude as well
as the footballing nous. He
appreciates what's going
on around him. Must be
something to do with all that
rugby education."
OK, the likes of Alex Goode,
Kris Chesney, and Jackson
Wray may be in the ‘300
club’, and Jamie George,
Brad Barritt, Chris Wyles
and Richard Wigglesworth
may already be in the ‘250
Club’, but there is no sense of
Owen lagging behind. After
all, they didn’t have to fit in
118 England appearances
and three British & Irish Lions
tours into their club careers.
And if you look at any other
metric – points scored,
trophies won – he is either
way out on his own or level
pegging with any player
the club has ever produced.
That’s why you might see him
take a deeper breath than
usual before kick-off today,
scan the packed stands and
72
73
take in the surroundings to
fully appreciate the enormity
of his latest milestone for the
club.
“To be able to play that
amount of games, especially
with this group, is special. I’ve
been here since I was 14, I’ve
grown up at this place and my
best mates are from here,”
said Owen.
“To be able to play for that
amount of time and to be
able to rack up that amount
of games with my mates has
been a dream come true.
“The Showdown is always
a massive occasion, but to
hopefully play my 250th game
for the club on that occasion,
with my friends and family
around me watching, will be
brilliant.
“I’ve played there for a few
years now and the occasion
is massive. It’s nice to have a
big one for such a milestone.
I won’t build it up to anything
that it’s not in the week,
hopefully it will be something
I can look back on and feel
proud of.
“I don’t think I’ve ever taken
for granted playing for this
club and I want to love every
last minute of my time here.
People tend to stay for a long,
long time normally, as a lot of
us have.
“Going into the back end
of the season we’re looking
forward to making it the best
we can and there’s plenty of
opportunities to do that.
“I’ve loved everything about
the place, especially the
people - the friends I’ve made,
everyone involved in the club,
and the fans. To those who
come and support us at the
weekend, and have done
throughout my career, I’m
massively thankful.
“I’ve loved it all so much.”
PIONEERS
AS YOU ARRIVED AT THE SPURS STADIUM TODAY, YOU MAY WELL HAVE SEEN, OR BEEN WELCOMED
BY SOME OF THE SARACENS PIONEERS WORKING ALONGSIDE THE SPURS FANBASSADORS.
The Saracens Pioneers are the
blue-jacketed, smiling face of
the StoneX Stadium, offering
a unique approach to match
day services, all delivered by
volunteers.
The programme was initiated
in 2013 when Saracens moved
to their new stadium, and is
now fully established, unique
in Premiership rugby and is an
integral part of the match day
experience at StoneX. We have
a pool of about 140 Pioneers,
a proportion of which are
needed for matches involving
Saracens Men or Saracens
Women, and occasionally for
additional fixtures such as
Women’s internationals, U20
Internationals and just recently,
the Varsity Double Header.
Every Pioneer on the
programme undertakes training
to achieve a level 2 qualification
in Spectator Safety. Their
primary responsibility is,
of course, the many safety
considerations around the
stadium, but it is part of the
deal that this responsibility
is delivered with a friendly,
welcoming smile.
Match day duties include
Meeting and Greeting at
Edgware, Mill Hill Broadway
and Mill Hill East stations,
as well as the Pursley Road
74
bus stops and the footpaths
through to the stadium.
Arriving at the stadium, match
day tickets are scanned by
the ticketing Pioneers who
are on duty at the three
gates. There is another team
helping manage access to
the hospitality suites in the
East Stand, and a small team
working with visiting journalists
in the Media Centre. The
biggest team is ‘Spectator
Services’, undertaking lowkey
stewarding duties in and
around the four stands, and
the fanzone areas; the Piazza,
the Oasis and the Olympic Bar.
Disability access is facilitated
by a team of Pioneers specially
trained in dealing with all types
of disability. Behind the scenes
there is a Volunteer Support
Team which handles all Pioneer
match day administration and
logistics.
The Pioneers themselves come
from far and wide, many
travelling extensive distances
to be part of the match day
experience at StoneX. Since
the group first came together,
when it seemed everyone was
a stranger, many close and
enduring friendships have
evolved through the duration
of the programme, and an
ever-increasing amount of
socialising has been one of the
unanticipated outcomes. A
number of Pioneers whose first
connection with Saracens was
through the volunteer scheme,
have subsequently become
Saracens’ employees.
The programme has proved
to be very successful, never
more so than when measured
in the most recent PRL ‘secret
shopper’ survey in which
the match day experience
at all premiership clubs was
assessed. Saracens and the
StoneX Stadium came out in
top place reflecting, amongst
other criteria, very positively on
the outstanding contribution
made by Pioneers.
We’re always recruiting, so if
the prospect of volunteering
with Saracens appeals to you,
we would love to hear from you.
It’s a unique opportunity to get
involved, make new friends,
make a valued contribution, to
get an insight, and play a part
in some of the ‘behind-thescenes’
activity of a top-level
rugby club.
If you are interested, want to
know more about joining the
team to continue making the
StoneX Stadium the friendliest
and most welcoming stadium
in Premiership rugby, take a
look here: https://saracens.
THE DEFENSIVE TRIO OF VICKI OYESOLA,
RAZIA QUASHIE AND CAPTAIN JODIE GIBSON
HAVE BEEN SUPREME IN CUTTING OUT
OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE OPPOSITION.
It’s a new-look squad this
season, with plenty of young
talent already showing what
they can do on court, as Mavs
look to unlock the undoubted
potential in the group.
An opening day draw with
Cardiff Dragons left a
thought of ‘what might have
been’ within the minds of the
squad, as they came away
with a draw from a match
that could have gone either
way.
With the talent in the
group, this is a squad that is
definitely on the up and they
proved that a week later, with
an important victory over
77
Leeds Rhinos at Herts Sports
Village in front of a sold-out
crowd!
Defeats against Surrey Storm
and Loughborough Lightning
have shown that there is
still work to be done against
the top sides in the league,
but this Mavericks group
have shown that they can
adapt quickly and take their
learnings into the next match
on a week-by-week basis.
The side return to the home
surroundings of Herts Sports
Village on 29th March against
a Severn Stars side that have
started the season at a rate
of knots, before attention
firmly shifts to the big fixture
against Manchester Thunder
at OVO Arena Wembley.
The Headliner, in association
with Shawbrook Bank, sees
the side play their first arena
fixture at one of the most
iconic venues in the United
Kingdom.
With former champions
Thunder in attendance, it’s
set to be an epic contest!
There’s so much more going
on throughout the day
78
though too, with our winning
teams from The Support Act
U13s festival playing on court
ahead of the Netball Super
League fixture. In recent
weeks, the SHOOT4PINK
Charity match in aid of the
Pink Ribbon Foundation has
also been announced, with a
host of celebrities set to be
playing in the fixture to raise
money and awareness for
Breast Cancer research and
support for families.
With the main event of
Mavericks versus Thunder
to follow, it’s going to be an
action-packed day.
For Mavericks, the defensive
trio of Vicki Oyesola, Razia
Quashie and captain Jodie
Gibson have been supreme in
cutting out opportunities for
the opposition, with Aliyah
Zaranyika acting as a superb
foil for the international trio.
In the middle of the court,
Ellie Rattu has settled into
life back in Mavericks colours
with ease, whilst vice-captain
Georgia Lees and young gun
Indya Masser have continued
to impress.
It’s in the shooting circle
though that Camilla
Buchanan is blessed with
79
options. With the choice of
South African international
Ine-Mari Venter, England
prodigy and NSL 2023
champion Emma Thacker,
Mavs Fans Player of the Year
Kira Rothwell and pathway
graduate Britney Clarke,
Head Coach Buchanan has
the players to work within
multiple different structures
on court.
With Venter out injured at
the start of the season, it has
been Thacker and Rothwell
grabbing the spotlight,
with Clarke showcasing her
prowess in the shooting circle
at crucial moments as well.
This is a Mavericks side that
are gelling with every match.
The prospect of how they can
perform throughout the rest
of the season is certainly a
tantalising one.

MULTI-ACADEMY
TRUST
Principal and Vice Principal of Saracens High School on GCSE
SARACENS
MULTI-ACADEMY
TRUST IS
EXPANDING,
MULTIPLYING
THE BENEFIT
TO FAMILIES
ACROSS NORTH
LONDON
Kate Alcock, CEO of Saracens
Multi-Academy Trust, with
a Saracens High School
award winner
82
Seven years ago an
educational trust was
formed to serve overlooked,
and often underprivileged,
families in the London
Borough of Barnet. The vision
was to combine a rigorous
academic programme with a
character education soaked
in the club’s values: Discipline,
Hard Work, Honesty and
Humility.
Kevin Perry, himself a lifelong
Sarries fan, is the Chair of
Trustees and cites the success
of the Trust’s first school in
the current expansion:
‘There is no doubt that the
extraordinary work carried
out at Saracens High School
in recent years, and the
reputation that it now enjoys,
have been a huge factor in
allowing the Trust to pursue
its goal of expanding the
number of schools within the
Trust.’
This reputation isn’t due to
one star player but a whole
team of contributing factors:
genuine involvement in the
community; values that are
adhered to; provision all the
way up to 18; beautiful new
buildings that create the best
environment for learning; and
GCSE results where progress
is made by every child
irrespective of background
and ability.
It is no wonder the free
school is substantially
oversubscribed year in, year
out.
The Multi-Academy Trust
(MAT) will open a newly built
primary school in Colindale
in a couple of years but
that won’t be the first time
younger children will wear
the familiar crescent and
star badge. The Chair of
Trustees shares an exciting
announcement:
‘April 1 marks a key date in
the development of Saracens
Multi-Academy Trust, as we
are thrilled to welcome into
our family Saracens Bell Lane
Primary School.’
Mrs Tudorache is the
Executive Acting Head at the
primary school in Hendon and
explains her enthusiasm for
joining the MAT:

Violeta Tudorache, Executive
Acting Head of Saracens Bell Lane
‘We will be stronger together,
collaborating and sharing
expertise to ensure a happy
school where children and
staff have high expectations
and fulfil their true potential.’
Roger Coral has volunteered
as a governor for 12 years.
Being a Quins fan doesn’t
dampen his enthusiasm for
joining the Trust!
WE WILL BE
STRONGER TOGETHER,
COLLABORATING AND
SHARING EXPERTISE
TO ENSURE A HAPPY
SCHOOL
‘I have no doubt how good
this will be for the school and
most importantly for the
children. The professionalism
of Saracens MAT, and its
commitment to teaching
and learning, is a fantastic
prospect for our school.’
Belonging to the wider
family makes an enormous
difference to children in
Saracens schools.
Regular visits from
Saracens players, as well
as opportunities to enjoy
highest-level sport, is only
the tip of the iceberg. There
is also mentoring, work
experience opportunities,
volunteers who serve as
school Governors, and
equipment donation. These
acts and others demonstrate
to the children that stadiums’
worth of people are invested
in seeing them thrive.
CEO of the Trust, Kate
Alcock, is encouraged by the
rock-steady support of fans
she stands alongside:
‘This really is only the
beginning, as we look to
further develop our ties to
the communities within and
around Barnet. Saracens
fans have been amazing over
the last six years and we so
look forward to their ongoing
support as we continue to
grow.’

COMING NEXT . . .
WITHIN THREE MONTHS TWO OF THE FOUR BIGGEST TROPHIES IN EUROPEAN
CLUB RUGBY WILL HAVE BEEN HANDED OUT. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT
SARACENS REMAIN IN THE RUNNING FOR TWO OF THEM. THE TOP 14 AND
URC TITLES ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO THE ‘MEN IN BLACK’ BUT THE GALLAGHER
PREMIERSHIP AND THE INVESTEC CHAMPIONS CUP ARE. STARTING FROM
TODAY, WE ARE INTO THE BUSINESS END OF THE SEASON.
First things first, there is a
top four finish to seal in the
Premiership. Coming into
today’s game Sarries are
in fourth place and seeking
to move up the pecking
order with a win over
second placed Harlequins
this afternoon. Top four
go into the play-offs, with
the top two having home
advantage.
The target is Twickenham
and an 11th Premiership
final and seventh title.
Retaining the silverware
would be another huge
achievement. With today’s
game being the first of
three against teams above
us, there is every chance
of overtaking those teams
seeking to take the trophy
out of our cabinet.
Then it is back into
European action in the
Round of 16 with a tough
trip to Stade Chaban-
Delmas to meet Bordeaux-
Begles.
