Torah Portion Preview
For Vayikra
Shabbat beginning March 22, 2024
Vayikra (God “called out”) names not only the Torah’s third book, but also its first
portion. The entire portion focuses on sacrifices: offerings for burning, meals, wellbeing,
sins, and penalties. Some portions of some offerings were eaten by the
priests. Fire consumed others for God’s pleasure. Directions detailing how to
prepare each offering are known to kosher butchers. The portion emphasizes the
practices, rather than the motivations for them.
Some commentators wrote of the role of sacrifice as an acceptable substitute for
human aggression. Others noted the value of sacrifice for the community, a few
even including sacrifices of time. The Encyclopedia Judaica’s article (in our TAS
library) spanned the scale of history for rich descriptions of the nature, meaning,
and history of sacrifice. There, we learn that even the Prophets degrade the
importance of sacrifice. After the destruction of Jerusalem, Talmud discussions
replaced temple sacrifice with a variety of practices including repentance, fasting,
prayer, service to the community, philanthropy, humility, and study of holy law.
These instructions remind us to take care during our lives to enrich our fellow
congregants, communities, and humanity. Donating possessions, time, skills, and
ultimately innovations that are pleasing to all is our sacred obligation.
P.S. We invite all to come to synagogue in person or on Zoom on Friday night to
hear a more in-depth interpretation from Rabbi Meeka (or this Sabbath's lay
speaker). We also invite other views, interpretations, reflections, and even poems
on each Torah portion. If you have something to contribute, please email it
to Rabbi Meeka, David Dirlam, and Melissa Immel. This and prior previews can be
found at Dr. David Dirlam's website by clicking on Changing Wisdoms Projects.
