PRESIDENT’S
WELCOME
Greetings on behalf of the TMEA Board of Directors
and the Conference Planning Committee, and a
warm welcome to the 65th Annual Tennessee
Music Education Association Conference. We’re
delighted to extend a heartfelt welcome to
music educators, music merchants, and student
performers from all corners of our state for four
remarkable days filled with learning, collaboration,
and the joy of music. The success of this event
is indebted to the generous support of our
conference sponsors, and we express sincere thanks for your contributions
to our organization and your steadfast commitment to advancing music
education in our schools, ensuring equitable access for all students.
As we embark on this 65th edition of our annual conference, envision it as
a reunion—a gathering where friends and colleagues reconnect to share
experiences, learn together, and establish new connections. This sense of
camaraderie is vital, forming a community of professionals where mutual
support and strength abound.
Within the conference program, you’ll find the meticulous efforts of our
Conference Planning Committee, offering opportunities to learn from
highly informed and experienced presenters, focusing on essential topics
aimed at elevating the quality of instruction. The featured performance
ensembles represent outstanding music programs across diverse settings in
the state. Renowned conductors have been assembled to collaborate with
our accomplished All-State student musicians, affording you the chance
to witness their dedication and skill during rehearsals and the culminating
concerts on Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Throughout the conference, we encourage you to interact with our vendors,
explore their offerings in the exhibit hall, and foster connections within the
music education community.
May this conference serve as a wellspring of renewal and inspiration for
you, set against the backdrop of the beautiful Gaylord Opryland Resort
and Convention Center. Our hope is that you depart invigorated, armed
with fresh ideas and concepts to implement in the coming academic year.
May this renewed energy and passion propel you successfully through
your endeavors. Tennessee is truly blessed with highly qualified music
teachers, talented students, and staunch advocates and supporters of
music. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to music education and
your dedication to lifelong learning. We trust that you’ll derive immense
satisfaction from the conference.
SELECTED PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLES
Vanderbilt Chorale
Wednesday, April 10, 2024 • 6:00 PM • Tennessee CDE
Dr. Tucker Biddlecombe, Director
Choral music at Vanderbilt University can be traced
back to 1895, when the Vanderbilt Glee Club
toured and performed throughout the country. The
Vanderbilt Chorale was formed in 2012 to create
an ensemble for students in the Blair School of Music (est. 1986) and highly qualified
non-music majors from other disciplines at Vanderbilt University. The Chorale is
dedicated to expressive, authentic performance of a variety of musical styles, with
an emphasis on the music of living composers. Performances have ranged from
Bach’s St. Matthew Passion to David Lang’s Little Match Girl Passion, and the ensemble
has collaborated with groups such as the Clare College Choir (UK) and Roomful of
Teeth. A cohort from the Chorale, called the “Vanderbilt Choral Scholars” travels
to the United Kingdom each summer as part of Immersion Vanderbilt. This unique
experience involves collaboration with various youth choirs throughout northern
England, as well as cathedral choirs in Liverpool and Leeds. The Chorale released
its first full-length recording in February of 2018, entitled “Music in the Listening
Place” (Navona). Gramophone noted that the Chorale “launch into each track with
the earnest passion that only university music students can innocently and genuinely
provide,” while Choir & Organ magazine stated, “eclecticism for its own sake is usually
dull – done as effectively as this, it’s exhilarating . . . a delight from start to finish.”
University of Memphis University Singers
welcomes singers from all majors who share a passion for choral music.
The University Singers presents diverse repertoire through conceptual programming.
Their performances provoke thought. With an unwavering commitment to musical
excellence, the musicians immerse the audience in extra-musical practices that
create a memorable concert experience.
The UofM University Singers maintains a robust performance schedule that
empowers its members to grow as choral artists and individuals. Invitation into this
ensemble is earned through an audition.
