2024
Markfield, Field Head, Stanton-under-Bardon, Thornton & Bagworth
News from Markfield WI
Sue Gammon and her two sisters ‘Froze Their Bits Off’ and raised £1,250.
AT OUR FEBRUARY meeting our speaker
was Geoff Harris with his talk entitled ‘A
Toastmaster’s Tale’.
Geoff is a Fellow of the National Association of
Toastmasters. His talk covered his route to thinking
of becoming a Toastmaster through his training (a
surprising amount) to his experiences in the role.
We also learned about the ‘uniform’ including red tail
coat, starched shirts etc and the historical traditions
behind it.
As a Toastmaster his role can include organising and managing events as well as
acting as Master of Ceremonies and he regaled us with stories of his work in some of
the grandest houses and hotels around the country and inevitably anecdotes of when
things do not always go to plan. Geoff was an excellent speaker and it was an evening
with some education and a lot of laughter and I suspect we may be seeing Geoff back
with one of his other talks in the future.
We would like to congratulate our member Sue Gammon who, along with her two
sisters, took part in the recent Freeze Your Bits Off walk in Bradgate Park. Together
they raised £1,250 towards the total of £12,500 raised by the whole event and looked
very fetching in their matching outfits.
• AT OUR MARCH MEETING we have Dr Rob Hunter telling us about the work of
a Coroner.
Frank
Brocklehurst
(7th February 1941 – 26th February 2024)
THE FAMILY
of Frank
Brocklehurst
are sad to
announce his
passing on
Monday 26th
February.
Frank was born
in Netherfield,
Nottinghamshire,
on 7th February
1941, the youngest
of three brothers
and a sister. He
met Margaret Ann
Braybrook at her
sister’s wedding in
1956, when he was
in the Boys Brigade,
and they married on
30th January 1960.
Frank joined the
Royal Air Force (in
preference to the
Frank and Margaret Brocklehurst
pictured on their 60th Wedding
Anniversary in January 2020.
Army due to the colour of the uniform!) as a cook in 1958,
which included being stationed in Germany. Their son
Shaun was born in 1961 after which they returned to the
UK.
After leaving the RAF three years later, he worked as
a chef with National Provincial Building Society before
moving on to NatWest as a Bank Messenger. After their
son Mark was born in Nottingham in 1970, the family
moved to Markfield in 1973. Frank transferred to NatWest in
Leicester, and their daughter Siobhan was born in 1979.
He joined Kegworth Barbershop Harmony Club as a tenor,
was a cricket umpire, and his love for genealogical research
initiated the Brocklehurst One Name study newsletter which
he continued with for some time. He was very sociable,
thoughtful, kind, funny, loved action movie stars Arnold
Schwarzenegger and Clint Eastwood, and enjoyed listening
to Roy Orbison, Skiffle, and American country music. He is
greatly missed.
The funeral will be taking place on Tuesday 26th March
2024 at 9:45am at Trinity Methodist Church in Markfield,
and we have arranged for refreshments at 11am at the
Coach and Horses.
Floral tributes are very welcome, and can be sent to The
Co-Operative Funeralcare, Stuart House, 128 London
Road, Coalville, Leicester LE67 3JD.
28th March – Maundy Thursday,
time to wash feet
‘The Last Supper’ by Leonardo da Vinci
MAUNDY THURSDAY is famous for two things. The
first is one of the final acts that Jesus did before
His death: the washing of His own disciples’ feet
(see John 13).
Jesus washed His disciples’ feet for a purpose: “A new command
I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must
love one another.” His disciples were to love through service, not
domination, of one another.
In Latin, the opening phrase of this sentence is ‘mandatum novum do
vobis’. The word ‘mundy’ is thus a corruption of the Latin ‘mandatum’ (or
command). The ceremony of the ‘washing of the feet’ of members of the
congregation came to be an important part of the liturgy (regular worship) of
the medieval church, symbolising the humility of the clergy, in obedience to
the example of Christ.
But Thursday was also important because it was on that night that
Jesus first introduced the Lord’s Supper, or what we nowadays call Holy
Communion.
Jesus and His close friends had met in a secret upper room to share the
Passover meal together - for the last time. And there Jesus transformed
the Passover into the Lord’s Supper, saying, ‘this is my body’ and ‘this is
my blood’ as He, the Lamb of God, prepared to die for the sins of the whole
world. John’s gospel makes it clear that the Last Supper took place the
evening BEFORE the regular Passover meal, and that later Jesus died at
the same time that the Passover lambs were killed.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could save money every time
you shop? That’s what cashback offers promise: if you
shop in the places they’re in partnership with, you can
get some of your money back whenever you use your
debit or credit card. Here’s how to fi nd the best deals.
Completely renovated,
new bathroom, kitchen,
electrics, carpets etc.
Two mins walk from
main square (The Nook)
£850 per month
Call : 07843 290665
Everyday spending
With cashback cards, you use them for your
everyday spending and, in return, you get
cashback or points that you can turn into
vouchers, money off at various shops or even
cash.
Amex offers the best deals for higher spenders,
or consider a Chase current account, where
you’ll earn 1% back on everything you spend
with most retailers.
Asda and John Lewis have cards that give
you extra points when you shop directly with
them, although you’ll also see a lower credit for
shopping elsewhere.
Cashback services
There are many cashback services, where
you sign in to the site and visit the retailer’s
link to qualify. One of the best known is
TopCashBack.co.uk, where – at the time of
writing – there’s up to 21% cashback on a Shark
vacuum, up to 16.5% at Currys, and up to 12%
from ASDA home and electricals.
The companies offer different deals to different
sites, so it’s worth signing up for more than one
– Quidco, KidStart and Complete Savings
are worth looking at, although with the latter
it’s ‘invite only’ – you’ll see a pop-up invite after
shopping at eBay, Argos, Trainline etc.
It’s particularly important to be aware of the
terms before paying for any premium cashback.
For example, Complete Savings is £15 per
month, and they give more money back than
most, with between 10% and 20% back. You
only need to make one purchase a month of any
amount to claim your membership fee back – but
if you forget, it will cost you.
Understand the downsides
Because the cashback relies on retailers
tracking you online or in-store, if the link or
connection doesn’t work or something else
happens, the cashback provider doesn’t get its
money from the retailer. And if they don’t get it,
they can’t pay it to you, although thankfully it’s
fairly rare.
Don’t expect to get money in a hurry either.
Many cashback deals take some time to go
through: the retailer needs to track the incoming
link (or your card number, for in-store deals),
tell the cashback site about it and then that
transaction needs to be processed. Many
cashback sites will have a payment threshold
and won’t pay out until you exceed it, even once
they’ve been paid.
Finally, you’ll sometimes fi nd that price
comparison sites such as PriceSpy or
PriceRunner can uncover deals that’ll save you
more money than any cashback deal.
residents of
Leicester,
Leicestershire
and Rutland
to take action
now to make or
update a will,
local charity Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is launching
its much-awaited annual will writing promotion.
The successful scheme, which runs from the 1st March
– 30th April 2024 is supported by many local solicitors
who have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing
charges for older people (55+) to only £35 + VAT for an
updated or a single uncomplicated Will for the duration of
the promotion.
It’s important that a will is in place as it gives not only
you, but your family peace of mind for the future and can
prevent the risk of significant problems when dealing with
your estate. It’s also advised that you regularly review your
will to ensure it is up to date.
Don’t miss Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland’s
straightforward, simple and affordable way to write or
update your will. And whilst we understand that loved ones
will come first, please consider leaving Age UK Leicester
Shire & Rutland a gift in your will.
Gifts in wills are a vital source of income for the charity
and if you’re able to leave just 1% of an estate it can make
such a big difference and help to secure the longer-term
future of a vital local independent charity which has been
supporting older people for over 70 years.
To request a will writing promotion pack, please contact
Markfield Medical Centre’s Patient
Participation Group March 2024 Newsletter
Defibrillators, Resuscitation and VAT
“I was technically dead for 2 minutes
and 40 seconds”
This is what TOM LOCKYER (pictured right), the Captain of
Luton Town FC, said after surviving a Cardiac Arrest thanks
to Defibrillator and Resuscitation treatment
Would YOU know how to save your child,
your best friend, or a stranger?
COME AND LISTEN TO THE EXPERT:
RICHARD NEVIN OF RB FIRST AID
Markfield Medical Centre’s Patient Participation Group and
ME Sports in the Community are delighted to be working
in partnership to promote and host a Cardiac Arrest
Defibrillators(AED) and Resuscitation (CPR) information
and training evening run by Richard Nevin on Thursday
25th April, 6.45pm for 7.00pm prompt start at the MESports in the Community Centre,
Mayflower Close, Markfield, LE67 9ST
Entrance is free and the tea and coffee will be available. To book please email: markfieldmedicalcentre.noreply@
nhs.net or markfield@megroup-uk.co.uk or call 01530 242240 and give your name and contact details.
Did you know that HM Government charges VAT on Defibrillators
sold to sports clubs, community groups and private owners?
VAT-registered businesses may claim it back, and there are exemptions for the NHS, specific charities, but NO
RELIEF for those groups with the least financial resources. Happily the Markfield Project was able to alleviate the
problem via donations and a brilliant small charity, but many are not so lucky.
The impact of a Cardiac Arrest, whether fatal on not, on families, communities, the NHS and beyond is incalculable.
While AED treatment and Resuscitation (CPR) in the first few minutes is vital to survival and currently less than one
in 10 out of hospital Cardiac Victims survive,
• Is the £200 VAT raised really more valuable and cost
effective than a Defibrillator?
• £200 that could be the difference between a community
funding 6 AEDs instead of 5?
Jack Hurley - who lives in Leicestershire, is 19 and had a Cardiac Arrest
last June playing football - says that without the Club’s AED and CPR
he wouldn’t be here. Jack and his family are giving their active support
to a national campaign to remove VAT charged on AEDs.
I share their hope that as many as possible will support the campaign, which already has over 80,000 signatures.
For more information please go to www.twitter.com/HeartRestartTax and www.hearttax.co.uk or scan this QR
code.
As always a big thank you to the Markfield community for their support for the Defibrillators and to the owners who
care for them.
‘Ben-Hur’
THE 1959 feature film
Ben-Hur is widely
considered to be one
of the best movies ever
made. Watching it is also
considered to be an Easter
tradition for many.
In this epic tale, set in Jerusalem in
26 AD, a wealthy Jewish nobleman
named Judah Ben-Hur becomes
enslaved by the Romans after
he’s falsely accused of plotting to
assassinate a Roman governor.
A Roman consul, Quintus Arrius,
eventually helps Judah to become
a champion charioteer, leading him
to ultimately try to seek revenge
on Messala—his former childhood
friend who orchestrated the false
accusation against Judah—in a
chariot race.
Along the way, Judah experiences
a pair of touching chance
encounters with Jesus Christ leading
up to the latter’s crucifixion and
searches for his long-lost family,
including his sister, Tirzah, and his
mother, Miriam.
While Jesus Christ is a featured
character in Ben-Hur, which is
also set in the real place and time
when Jesus lived, the story itself is
fictional.
The name Ben-Hur does make
a brief appearance in the Bible,
although it doesn’t seem to have any
literary connection to the novel and
film’s main character. In First Kings
4:1-19, there’s a list of 12 district
governors appointed by Solomon
during his reign as King of Israel—
and Ben-Hur was one of them.
This film, directed by cinematic
golden-age auteur WilliamWyler,
had the biggest budget of any movie
ever made when it debuted on
November 18, 1959.
It also set the record for the most
Oscars ever won by a single film—
11 —which has never been broken
(although it has been tied by both
1997’s Titanic and 2003’s The Lord
of the Rings: Return of the King).
Flooding
THE LAST FEW months has seen the
country and many parts of our county
battered by storms.
The number and severity of this flooding is
unprecedented, and I want to thank the various
agencies, local landowners and businesses who
have done their best to keep our roads open.
There is often confusion about who is
responsible for the different aspects of flooding
so I thought it would be useful to summarise this
for residents.
Frustratingly there is no single organisation
responsible for flooding, so depending on
what has caused the flood will depend on
which organisation will need to be involved in
resolving.
The County Council is the ‘Lead Local Flood
Authority (LLFA)’ responsible for the coordination
and management of flood risk across the county
of Leicestershire; duties include investigating
major flooding incidents, regulating activities on
ordinary watercourses and acting as a statutory
consultee for planning.
So, if…
Flooding from small watercourse, surface water
(not on the road) / ground water: You should
email flooding@leics.gov.uk or use the county
councils webform.
Flooding from blocked road drain or surface
water on the road: Contact the Local Highways
Authority (LCC), again by emailing flooding@
leics.gov.uk or use the county councils webform.
Flooding from a river or reservoir: Contact the
Environment Agency Flood line on 0345 988
Beech Drive, Thornton
IN JANUARY I attended a meeting
of HBBC’s Planning Committee to
hold Developers to account in their
attempt to escape their affordable
housing obligations in Thornton
village.
It was pleasing to see all political parties on
the same page in ensuring that Developers
can’t renege on their obligations in the event
that planning permission be granted – in this
case on appeal by an Inspector. Planning and
development is a perennial issue across our
villages and it would be helpful if this cross-party
approach was adopted more often in these
contentious cases.
South Charnwood High School
IT WAS GREAT to be invited by Mrs
Aldridge to SCHS to meet and speak
with approximately 40 students of
their ‘Pupil Voice’ group.
Pictured (L-R) are Cllr Claire Harris,
Mrs Aldridge and myself.
Cllr Claire Harris (Markfield) also joined me
to give her perspective as a newly elected
councillor. It was so nice to see the passion
the students have, and their engagement
was certainly more enthusiastic than some
professional politicians!
The students of today are the representatives of
tomorrow and I was particularly proud to have
been able to support this event.
Budget 2024/25
THE COUNTY COUNCIL has recently
set its budget for 2024/25. I wanted
to use this month’s article to explain
the process in reaching this budget,
and the competing pressures that
councillors have had to weight up:
What issues are driving budget
pressures?
Spiralling social care prices, growing service
demand and inflation are driving up costs. The
Government’s autumn statement last month
didn’t include any extra funding for councils
which has ramped up the pressure for local
authorities.
How bad is the situation?
Nearby councils, such as Nottingham City,
have declared that they do not have enough
resources to continue to deliver services by
issuing a section 114 notice, and others, such
as Leicester and Derbyshire, say they are being
pushed to the brink.
We are not in crisis territory. We’ve successfully
managed better than most by not forgetting
about the financial realities of local government
when delivering services. But we do have a
significant budget gap and need to deliver
services differently.
How does this affect the council’s
budget?
Pressures include:
• Surging cost of placements for children in care
- with costs for just 10 children with complex
needs now reaching £5m. A 56 per cent rise in
unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in care
and care leavers since last year. Over £220m
of net inflation and service pressures across
the next four years - compared to £100m of
increased income (including Council Tax).
How big is the council’s budget?
The council’s yearly budget totals £560m.
What are the budget proposals?
The four-year budget proposals include:
A £12m budget shortfall next year – which we’re
proposing to use reserves to cover. This budget
gap is set to rise to £85m by 2028.
£127m more to support vulnerable people – to
pay for more home and residential care, and
support people with physical disabilities, learning
disabilities and mental health needs.
An extra £113m – to cover inflation and a
National Living Wage increase.
Major redesigns of services to manage future
demand, including:
Special educational needs and disabilities – a
new approach balancing growing demand for
support with getting children the right help.
Working with Barnardo’s to run children’s homes
locally.
Boosting ‘supported living’ – over 100 new
placements created since 2020, enabling people
with learning and physical disabilities and
mental health needs to learn life skills and live
independently.
Rolling out ‘care technology’ – over 2,600 pieces
of equipment, including falls detectors and
GPS location trackers, installed over last year,
benefiting over 1,000 people.
£36m of savings – including redesigning
services, reducing the cost of back-office support
services by maximising digital technology and
smarter procurement.
A £445m four-year capital pot – for the cost
of building roads, schools and other one-off
projects linked to new homes being built across
Leicestershire.
If you have any local issues that I can be off
assistant with, please do not hesitate to get in
touch.
Finally, I would like to wish you and your families
a Happy Easter!
THE HERALD • MID-MARCH 2024 • Tel: 01530 244069 • Email: info@markfieldherald.co.uk
29th March - Good Friday, the day
the Son of God ** died for you
GOOD FRIDAY is the day on which Jesus died on the
cross. He was crucified at 9am in the morning, and
died six hours later, at 3pm. It is the most solemn
day in the Christian year and is widely marked by the
removal of all decorations from churches.
In Lutheran churches, the day was marked by the reading of the passion
narrative in a gospel, a practice which lies behind the ‘passions’ composed by
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750). Both the St Matthew Passion and the
St John Passion have their origins in this observance of Good Friday.
The custom of observing a period of three hours’ devotion from 12 midday to
3pm on Good Friday goes back to the 18th century. The ‘Three Hours of the
Cross’ often take the form of an extended meditation on the ‘Seven Last Words
from the Cross’, with periods of silence, prayer, or hymn-singing.
Good Friday, Jesus and the thieves on the Cross
Luke’s account of the crucifixion (Luke 23:32-43) emphasises the mocking of
the crowd, ‘If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself’ (35,37,39). In their
view a Messiah does not hang on a cross and suffer. In considering the two
men who were crucified with Jesus, we are also confronted with the issue of
how Jesus secures salvation for us.
The words of one of those crucified with Jesus reflected the crowd’s taunts:
‘Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us.’ He highlights the question of
Jesus’ identity: how can He save others, when He cannot save Himself from
death? He failed to see that the cross itself was the means of salvation.
So - what kind of Messiah was Jesus?
The other criminal’s response in his last moments is a moving expression of
faith. When challenging the other man, he spoke of the utter injustice of the
crucifixion: ‘this man has done nothing wrong.’ He perceived the truth that
Jesus was indeed the Messiah. In a wonderful picture of grace, ‘remember me
when You come into Your kingdom’, the second thief confessed his guilt and
secured Jesus’ forgiveness and mercy.
In reply, Jesus promised the man life from the moment of death; ‘Today you
will be with Me in paradise.’ Jesus used the picture of a walled garden to help
the man understand His promise of protection and security in God’s love and
acceptance eternally.
Each one of us has to choose how we react to Jesus on the cross. Do we want
Him to ‘remember’ us when He comes into His kingdom, or not? If you were to
die tonight, how confident would you be of going to be with Jesus? ‘For Christ
died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God’
(1 Peter 3:18).
THE SONGS for our Spring/
Summer season of 2024 were
unveiled at our first session
of the year at The Groby Club,
Leicester Road, Groby.
All three of the rehearsals that day were
very well attended in spite of the chilly,
damp weather outside and cake time was
busy with lively chatter as we met with old
friends and welcomed lots of new faces.
Songs originated from various places
in Europe, notably Sweden, Germany,
France and Italy as well as all four
countries of the British Isles. Some links
were rather tenuous and the choir were a
bit bemused by the song attributed to ...
Birmingham, but come along to the next
rehearsal if you’re intrigued by that one!
Our trip round Europe promises to be yet
another success for Groby Sings in our
11th year so do join us every Wednesday
during term time to see what a good time
we have with lots of laughs, socialising,
singing and cake. We especially welcome
singers with disabilities or memory
problems together with their friends and
carers.
Adult singers: 1.30-3.00pm or 7.30-
9.00pm, Youth & Children’s Choir (7
years and over): 3.40-4.40pm. Preschool
children are welcome in the
afternoon in the care of their adult with a
crèche area available. Please note that
we don’t meet in school holidays.
Concerts will be held on
Saturday 22nd and Sunday
23rd June – dates for your
diary.
for Thought
Carry each other’s burdens
We are called to be burden bearers like Jesus, to
help people in need. I learnt to my cost just what
those words truly mean.
In 1971 when I was a young foolish soldier in the REME; we
were due to do a 5 mile speed march to ensure we were ‘battle fit’;
One lad in our platoon was forever being teased, tormented, and
bullied, simply because we thought he didn’t fit in with ‘us’. In the
night I removed his kit from his back pack and filled it with heavy
lifting weights. Not long after we started the march he began to lag
behind, moaning about the weight he was carrying.
Our sergeant halted us and looked inside his back pack; ‘Kelly
did you do this’, caught again! I was then ordered to give him my
back pack and I was to carry his ladened back pack for the next
4.5 miles. My fellow tormentors completed the march laughing as I
struggled to complete the march.
What a heavy lesson I learnt that day. If you can’t help someone
who is weighed down with troubles don’t add to their already heavy
burdens; and what if you were told
by God to carry someone else’s
burdens that were heavier than your
own.
The next time you think of doing
something mean or what you think
is funny to someone, before you do
so, stop and think; what if you have
to walk just one mile in their shoes.
Carry each other’s burdens, and
in this way you will fulfil the law of
Christ. (Gal 6:2)
Take advantage of interest-free loans
Six Leicestershire & Rutland
businesses feature in new video
THE SIR THOMAS WHITE
Loan Charity, which provides
interest-free loans for
business and education
purposes, has launched a
brand-new video featuring
six local entrepreneurs
Six small businesses from across
Leicestershire & Rutland have been
featured in a new video, released by
The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity.
All of the featured business owners
were successful in receiving an
interest-free business loan from the
Charity in order to either start their
business, or grow it further.
Narrated by Lee Wheeler-Tomes of Orange Fox Studios, who is an
education and business loan borrower from the Charity himself, the video
takes viewers around the counties of Leicestershire & Rutland to speak
with the following entrepreneurs:
• Sara Aspinal – STAK Knee Stretcher in Bagworth
• Oliver Forty – Jollie Campers in Husbands Bosworth
• Dhilon Devji – Dhil’s Vegan Street Food in Wigston
• Steven McKerrow – Mouseskins in Loughborough
• Caroline Stafford – The Kitsch Hen in Oakham
• Liga Orlovska – Honeycraft in Leicester
The video can be viewed in full on the Charity’s website - www.
stwcharity.co.uk
Lucy Womack, STWLC Chair, said: “This is something we’ve been
working on for some time, so we’re absolutely delighted to see the video
come together and be shared far and wide.
“We’re always telling people about what we offer, but this video was
all about showing the real-life difference that our interest-free loans
make for businesses in our region, straight from the mouths of the
entrepreneurs themselves.
“Off the back of a fantastic 2023, where we approved a massive
£600,000 in interest-free loans, we’re looking forward to supporting
more entrepreneurs like Sara, Oliver, Dhilon, Steven, Caroline and Liga in
Speaking within the video, Liga Orlovska of Honeycraft, who runs Meet the Bees experiences at Bradgate Park,
said: “Without The Sir Thomas White Loan Charity, most likely there wouldn’t be Meet the Bees at Bradgate Park.
When I looked into other business loans, as a single parent with two children, I was either ineligible to apply or it
was too high risk. So, the (STWLC) loan was crucial in me opening the business.”
Established in 1542, STWLC hosts quarterly application windows each year in which people aged over 18 and
under 45 can apply for unique interest-free loans of up to £20,000 to aid local businesses, or £10,000 to support
students wishing to return to postgraduate education. The Charity’s loans are interest-free for nine years, and
become repayable by equal instalments after three years.
Application packs are available to download upon completion of a contact form on STWLC’s website
31st March - EASTER, the most
joyful day of the year
EASTER is the most joyful day of the year for
Christians. Christ has died for our sins. We are
forgiven. Christ has risen! We are redeemed!
We can look forward to an eternity in His joy!
Hallelujah!
The Good News of Jesus Christ is a message so simple that you can
explain it to someone in a few minutes. It is so profound that for the rest of
their lives they will still be ‘growing’ in their Christian walk with God.
Why does the date move around so much?
Because the date of Passover moves around, and according to the biblical
account, Easter is tied to the Passover. Passover celebrates the Israelites’
exodus from Egypt, and it lasts for seven days, from the middle of the
Hebrew month of Nisan, which equates to late March or early April.
Sir Isaac Newton was one of the first to use the Hebrew lunar calendar to
come up with firm dates for the first Good Friday: Friday 7th April 30 AD
or Friday 3rd April, 33 AD with Easter Day falling two days later. Modern
scholars continue to think these two Fridays to be the most likely.
Most people will tell you that Easter falls on the first Sunday after the
first full moon after the Spring Equinox, which is broadly true. But the
precise calculations are complicated and involve something called an
‘ecclesiastical full moon’, which is not the same as the moon in the sky.
The earliest possible date for Easter in the West is 22nd March, which last
fell in 1818. The latest is 25th April, which last happened in 1943.
Why the name, ‘Easter’?
In almost every European language, the festival’s name comes from
‘Pesach’, the Hebrew word for Passover.
The Germanic word ‘Easter’, however, seems to come from Eostre, a
Saxon fertility goddess mentioned by
the Venerable Bede. He thought that
the Saxons worshipped her in ‘Eostur
month,’ but may have confused her with
the classical dawn goddesses like Eos
and Aurora, whose names mean ‘shining
in the east’. So, Easter might have meant
simply ‘beginning month’ – a good time
for starting up again after a long winter.
Finally, why Easter eggs?
On one hand, they are an ancient symbol
of birth in most European cultures.
On the other hand, hens start laying
regularly again each Spring. Since eggs were forbidden during Lent, it’s
easy to see how decorating and eating them became a practical way to
celebrate Easter.
World Autism Acceptance Week,
2nd – 8th April 2024
AUTISM IS on the rise. Or at least, the recognition of it is.
According to the website psychcentral.com, there was a
787% exponential increase in the number of people who
were diagnosed with autism between 1998 and 2018 in
the UK.
The National Autistic Society says that in the UK, more than one in
every 100 people are now on the autism spectrum. It reckons that around
700,000 adults and children in the UK suffer with the condition to some
degree.
All of which means that you probably know of someone who has autism,
to some degree. And you may know that, as it says on the NHS website:
Autistic people may act in a different way to other people, … and find it
hard to understand how other people think or feel. They may find things like
bright lights or loud noises overwhelming, stressful, or uncomfortable. They
may get anxious or upset about unfamiliar situations and social events and
take longer to understand information.
To help people with autism, you may wish to support this ‘acceptance
week’, by going to the National Autistic Society’s website, https://www.
autism.org.uk and taking part in some way in their fundraising campaign.
Mayflower Club’s 11th
Anniversary
THIS YEAR we celebrated the 11th
Anniversary of the opening of the
Mayflower Club.
How time flies by. Carol and myself still recall
our very first club meeting. Very much like the
recent months the weather in February 2013
was appalling. There had been a winter storm
that day with high winds blowing down trees and
branches, plus pouring rain. WE did not expect
anyone to turn up – BUT they did. Traipsing in
with umbrellas, winter coats and woolly hats.
Sadly, we have lost a number of members over
the years. However, many are still with us and
still enjoying all the activities we provide for them.
Looking back at photographs of our very first
session, we recall some of our original members
having a go at chair exercises whilst others were
trying their hands at indoor bowls in the sports
hall.
Over the following years we joined forces with the
Monday afternoon Friendship Club that had been
run for many years by Barbara Pearson and
her friends. This ensured the continuance of this
lovely club.
This year had been rather difficult and unsettling
for us however, and with the wonderful support
we have had from the Markfield Congregational
Church, we have settled nicely into our new
home and as Del Boy would say “Onwards and
upwards Rodney, onwards and upwards”.
We marked our 11th Anniversary by reflecting
on photographs of all the events we had put
on at the Club over the year. Looking back,
we had managed to put on some amazing
events and activities including celebrations,
commemorations, guest speakers, outside visits
and of course prize bingo, play your cards right
and beetle drives.
Then, in came our candlelit 11th Anniversary
cake. This had been specially made by member
Rose together with other sumptuous cakes she
had made. These were eagerly devoured by our
delighted members. Many thanks Rose, we all
enjoyed your wonderful cakes.
BUT we could not have done all this - or indeed
survived - without the continued support and help
from our members for which we are eternally
grateful.
Chinese New Year
ON THE 7TH February we marked the
Chinese New Year which, this year is
the Year of the DRAGON.
Firstly, we explained the legend of how the
Chinese calendar was established based on
the mythical race by various creatures to the
Emperor’s Imperial Palace. We then explored
each member’s birth year to see which creature
they were and what their positive and negative
characteristics are. This caused some laughter as
the characteristics were quite true in most cases.
We had a look at the Chinese legends and myths
about the Three Star Gods Shuo, Lu and Fu
and their connections to fortune, prosperity and
longevity. With mixed results members then
found out their fortunes for the coming year
through Chinese Fortune Cookies.
Members then had a go at making Chinese
lanterns which were judged by our guest Yvonne
who also brough along her traditional silk New
Years dress to show us.
On the 14th February Jayne, our arts and crafts
instructor, came along to help members make
some pretty Valentine’s cards. In fact, members
got so wrapped up in making them we ran out
of time to hold our annual pancake day tossing
challenge. Never mind it saved us having to
clear up all the shattered pancake debris that we
usually experience.
Forthcoming Events
HERE ARE some of the events we have
in place for the coming weeks:
Saint David’s Day, “Where there’s Muck there’s
Brass challenge, Saint Patrick, Easter Bonnet
and Egg Hunt, Eggs and Egg Cups Talk, May
Day Traditions, Saint George Pub Quiz, 1st
Anniversary Coronation of King Charles, D Day
80th Anniversary plus Play Your Cards Right,
Prize Bingo and Beetle Drive.
Arts and Crafts Crochet Club
THE CLUB is still growing with new
members making crochet goodies and
at the same time meeting new friends
and having a natter.
Don’t worry if you have had little or no experience
of crochet work as Jayne, our instructor, is very
patient and will lead you through this art even if
you’re left-handed. So, if you if you are looking
for a new hobby and meet new friends just come
along and give it a try. Materials are provided for
you.
The Mayflower Club sessions are held at the
Congregational Community Church rooms on
Main Street.
Our Friendship Club and Arts and Crafts
group meet Monday afternoons with our
main Mayflower Club session being held on
Wednesday afternoons.
All sessions are from 2pm to 4pm and only
cost £2.50p per session with a cuppa and light
refreshments thrown in. Don’t be shy - Just turn
up on the day
Why Easter will never go away
HOW DO YOU make sense of the Resurrection? Dead
men don’t rise, so why believe that this particular
dead man did rise?
At the end of St Luke’s gospel we read that: “they still did not believe it
because of joy and amazement” (Luke 24:4). This is highly significant. The
Gospels do not show us a group of disciples who were in a receptive frame
of mind. After the crucifixion, they were in hiding, frightened and scattered.
Then suddenly, they came out of hiding and were totally different; excited,
joyful. By Pentecost they were confident, with one firm message: ‘You
crucified Jesus, but God raised Him up!’
How did they know this?
Because of direct personal experience. Some of them had visited the tomb
of Jesus: it was empty. Others claimed to have seen and touched the risen
Lord. Were they hallucinating? People can hallucinate in groups – when
taking drugs, for example. But of course, each one will see a different
hallucination. But the disciples all saw the same thing. Or rather, the same
person. Jesus.
Were they lying?
Jesus had died a humiliating death as a criminal. Perhaps they wanted to
rescue His good name. So, did they pretend they had seen Him?
This theory has a big problem. Their preaching led them into trouble with
the authorities. They were beaten and imprisoned and some of them killed.
People will die for ideas and causes which they believe in passionately. But
not for things they have made up. We might suffer for our convictions, but
we will not suffer for our inventions.
What about the ‘swoon’ theory?
That Jesus didn’t die on the cross, despite terrible wounds? That He
recovered in the tomb, and then escaped? That the disciples nursed Him
back to health? But Roman soldiers knew when a man was dead; and there
was the guard on the tomb. Also, the events which followed simply don’t fit.
If the disciples had been hiding Jesus all along, they would have kept very
low-key, and out of the way, so that the authorities did not come after Him
again.
Besides, to preach that God had raised Jesus from the dead – which is
exactly what they did preach – would have been a lie. Beatings and threat
of death would soon have loosened their tongues. Inventions crumble
under pressure; convictions hold fast.
Another reason for believing in the Resurrection is this: Jesus’s continuing
impact. Thousands and soon millions of people in every generation since
have shared an inescapable sense of being ‘accompanied’ through life.
Though unseen, they identify this presence as the Risen Lord.
Sometimes this experience of meeting Jesus is gentle and fitful. Sometimes
it is dramatic and life changing. This reminds us that the resurrection of
Jesus is not just an interesting historical puzzle. It is a vital, present day
reality. It brings wonderful comfort, assuring us of the central Christian
truths: death is dead; Jesus is alive; God is love.
This central notion was captured, most movingly, by the great Albert
Schweitzer: ‘He came to those men who knew Him not. He speaks to us
the same word: “Follow thou me,” and sets us to the tasks which He has
to fulfil for our time. He commands. And to those who obey Him, whether
they be wise or simple, He will reveal Himself in the toils, the conflicts, the
suffering which they shall pass through in His fellowship, and, as ineffable
mystery, they shall learn in their own experience who He is.’
Have a joyful – and a challenging – Easter.
Message from Dr Luke Evans MP
OVER THE PAST
couple of years
I and the other
Leicestershire
MPs have been lobbying
Government for additional
funding for Leicestershire.
We’ve had multiple meetings
with the Chancellor, I regularly
raise fairer funding for the County
Council in the House of Commons
and we’re the only MP’s to have
secured a meeting between the
Chancellor and representatives
from their respective County
Council.
And I have good news to share…
We recently found out that not
only have we helped to secure
an above-inflation uplift to
Leicestershire County Council’s
finances of more than 7%, but
that reallocated funding from the
cancelled northern leg of HS2
means Leicestershire will be
receiving a whopping £238,154,000
to improve local transport between
2025 and 2032!
This £238m for our county and
additional £159m for Leicester
City brings the total for our area
to over £397 million. It’s part of
the Government’s long-term plan
to reallocate the £36 billion saved
from HS2 Phase 2 into local
transport improvements across the
country – benefitting more people,
in more places and, importantly,
more quickly than HS2!
It is the first transport budget of
its kind that is specifically targeted
at smaller cities, towns and rural
areas and empowers local people
and your elected representatives
to invest in the local transport
projects that matter most to their
communities.
This is also on top of last year’s
funding announcements for
Leicestershire of £3 million to fix
potholes and £1.78 million for a
Bus Service Improvement Plan.
These funds all go straight to
Leicestershire County Council
(LCC) and I wanted to take this
opportunity to reiterate that, as
your Member of Parliament, I am
responsible for national legislation
not decisions made by Local
Authorities. I am not a Councillor,
I do not vote on matters at LCC
nor do I have any authority to
order or pressure LCC into making
certain decisions. I’ve written to the
Leader of Leicestershire County
Council to request a meeting to
see how Markfield, Ratby and the
surrounding areas will benefit.
If you have any ideas yourself,
please do get in touch with me at
luke.evans.mp@parliament.uk - I’m
keen to hear your views!
Over the past four years we’ve
secured; the £24 million testing unit
for Hinckley Hospital, the £19.9m
conservation and education
centre for Twycross Zoo, the
£400,000 Rural Prosperity Fund
for businesses and community
groups (visit https://www.hinckleybosworth.gov.uk/ruralprosperity
to apply), millions for school
improvements and millions for
ultra-fast broadband upgrades… to
name just a few!
But when we’re all so used to
seeing news of these large funding
grants from Government, we can
forget the ‘smaller’ grants also
make a real difference to the
people who use the spaces for
activities and meetings. And as
your MP I regularly hear about
funding grants for local groups, like
the £8,900 grant for equipment at
Twycross Village Hall or £10,000
for Barlestone St Giles Football
Club to help with funding solar
panels for the clubhouse roof.
Sports clubs are another place
where ‘small’ amounts of money
can go a long way, and this month
I’m really pleased to share news
It’s quite difficult to get a job at Citroen. I had to send them 2CVs.
with you that four local football
clubs have received grants for new
goalposts!
• Market Bosworth FC -- Grant
award: £690
• Hinckley Borough FC-- Grant
award: £1,124
• AFC Barwell -- Grant award:
£1,312
• Sporting Markfield F.C. -- Grant
award: £1,440
This funding, totalling £4,566 from
the Government’s Multi-Sports
Grassroots Fund, should make a
considerable difference to our local
clubs who provide opportunities and
enjoyment all year round.
I am so pleased all the work is
paying off with such significant
investment taking place right where
we all live. As always, I’ll continue
to fight to deliver more!
STANFEST ‘24
ON 8TH JUNE
23
Can’t these dogs read?
Another ineffective sign!
STANFEST ’24 is coming to Stanton under Bardon on
Saturday 8th June 2024.
After the success of the Kings Coronation Party in the Park in Stanton
under Bardon last year, the fete committee could see the need for
the return of an annual community event, and are excited to share
StanFest ’24 with you. This highly anticipated event will take place on
Saturday 8th June from 1pm until 6pm on the recreation ground (next
to the primary school). St Mary’s and All Saints Chuch will also be open
from 2pm-5pm selling tea and cake.
You can look forward to a diverse range of activities for all, a wide
selection of stalls, live music and delicious food stalls offering an array
of culinary delights.
At StanFest ’24 not only will you be able to participate in the joyous
atmosphere and create your own lasting memories, but you will
also help Rainbows to continue to brighten short lives. Highlighting
the importance of community bonds, StanFest ’24 will be donating
all proceeds to Rainbows, the only children’s hospice in the East
Midlands, who care for hundreds of families every year who have a
baby, child or young person with a serious or terminal illness. Helping
them fulfil their potential, making the most of every precious moment.
StanFest is made possible through the collaborative efforts of our
dedicated committee members, local businesses, volunteers and you!
Last year our event was supported by the following companies / groups
and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them again, as it
wouldn’t have been possible to put on such a large event without their
help.
A huge thank you
FOLLOWING last month’s Herald article. It’s that illiterate
dog or its owner again! Also we and our neighbours have
picked up over 10 poos from our front gardens in the past
few weeks.
Humans and animals are at risk of contracting all or some of the following
from dog faeces, some of which can be particularly dangerous to young
children who may unknowingly play in contaminated areas: Salmonella,
EColi, Tape and other infectious worms, Cryptosporidiosis and Parvovirus.
Come on dog owners - please clean up your act!
