TRAMS ON TRACK
A tram travels through Parramatta last week.
ELLIE BUSBY
For the first time in over 80
years, a tram has travelled
through the Parramatta
CBD – marking a huge milestone in
the development of the Parramatta
Light Rail.
Last week, the 45-metre-long light
rail vehicle received a police escort
as it made its first 6.6-kilometre
journey from the stabling facility
in Camellia, through Parramatta
Square, along Church Street,
through the hospital precinct, to its
final stop at Westmead.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said it
was another exciting milestone in
the NSW Government’s commitment
to making sure Parramatta
Light Rail is “on track” to service
tens of thousands of passengers by
mid-2024.
“I am delighted to mark this
milestone with a tram travelling
through Parramatta CBD for the
first time in over 80 years – giving
us a glimpse of what the future of
public transport will look like in
western Sydney,” he said.
“The light rail will breathe new
life into western Sydney, boosting
local businesses, connecting key
precincts and servicing an estimated
28,000 passengers each day
in our west.
“The people of western Sydney
deserve reliable public transport,
and that is what we are delivering.”
Trams are back in Parramatta for the first time in more than 80 years.
The test also marked the first
time a 63-tonne tram has travelled
over the new Bidgee Bidgee Bridge
in Rosehill, which allows vehicles
to cross James Ruse Drive without
disrupting traffic.
There’s more than 2,000 hours of
testing to be completed before the
trams are given the green light to
take passengers.
“This project has supported 5,500
jobs – and I want to thank everyone
who has worked tirelessly to make
this milestone possible,” Minister
for Transport Jo Haylen said.
“In the coming months, these
trams will be a brand-new public
transport service connecting some
of our fastest growing communities.”
When the light rail is in service,
more than 16,000 people are
expected to use the Church Street
stop each day.
“It is fantastic to see how the light
rail will support local businesses in
our CBD, which have had a challenging
few years due to COVID and
construction impacts,” Member for
Parramatta Donna Davis said.
“I encourage everyone over the
coming months to visit Parramatta,
drop into a local business on the
light rail route and see the light rail
vehicles as they move through the
city and surrounding suburbs.”
Raw deal on pay
RSL PAYS TRIBUTE
TO FORMER BOSS
How western Sydney women are worse off than rest of city
ELLIE BUSBY
Western Sydney
University (WSU) has
revealed it’s where
you live that counts, after new
research found women in western
Sydney earn $20,233 less on
average compared to women in
the rest of Sydney.
Recently released in
Parramatta, the Unlocking
Women’s Potential: Labour force
participation in Western Sydney
report maps the geography of
women’s participation in the
workforce across western Sydney
compared to the rest of Sydney.
The results show that although
tertiary qualification attainment
among women in the region
has surged, participation in the
workforce lags behind national
averages, particularly in key
Local Government Areas (LGA)
like Cumberland.
“The report found women
in western Sydney are more
educated yet work and earn less
than men in western Sydney, and
women in the rest of Sydney,”
Co-lead Author of the report for
Rhonda Itaoui, Jennifer Westacott and Kate Huppatz holding the
report in Parramatta.
the Centre for Western Sydney,
Professor Kate Huppatz, said.
“Less advantaged women
bear the greatest impacts of
dependent children and caring
responsibilities, particularly
solo mothers.
“In particular women from
diverse backgrounds, including
migrant and refugee women, face
the greatest negative impacts on
their labour force participation
compared with other cohorts in
western Sydney.”
The study found that if the
participation of western Sydney
women matched that of women
in the rest of Sydney, up to
83,160 women would enter the
workforce, placing an additional
$90,266 in the pockets of these
women each year.
Director of the Centre for Western
Sydney and co-lead author,
Dr Rhonda Itaoui, highlighted
that women in the region face
place-based barriers.
She said that includes limited
local employment options, long
commute times and insufficient
affordable childcare options,
compounded by entrenched
gender norms and expectations
that see caregiving responsibilities
fall primarily to women.
“Place-based strategies for
achieving gender equity in
employment are needed to break
down these barriers, supported
by policymaking and initiatives
that directly tackle the distinct
obstacles encountered by
women in suburban regions like
western Sydney,” she said.
The data also revealed that
western Sydney men earn $7,563
less than women in the rest of
Sydney, with WSU saying it highlights
both genders experience a
spatial pay gap.
The report analyses the 2021
ABS Census, policies and
programs, and insights from key
stakeholder consultations with
government, community organisations
and academics.
“There is still so much we need
to achieve for the gender gap to
close and for the true advancement
of all women,” WSU Chancellor
Jennifer Westacott said.
The garden is revealed last week.
Merrylands RSL has named its
memorial garden in honour of
Charles W. Munnery, one of the
club’s longest members and former presidents,
who passed away late last year.
50 years ago, Munnery, known as Chicka by
his friends, came up with the concept for the
memorial in the front gardens of the RSL.
He commissioned world-renowned artist,
David Darcy, to commemorate servicemen
in recognition of their efforts and battles for
their country.
Each of the three servicemen represented in
the memorial reflect a division of RSL’s service
league; the Navy, Army and Air Force and the
nurse, added later in 2010 to represent women
in war.
Now, on what would have been his 100th
birthday, the local RSL has paid tribute to his
memory by naming it The Charles W Munnery
OAM Memorial Gardens.
“[He] was a much-loved member of the
Merrylands RSL family until his passing on
the 18th September 2023,” Merrylands RSL
said in a statement.
Special memories that last a lifetime
Ellie Busby’s story on Accor Stadium’s 25th
anniversary certainly sparked some happy
moments in the memory bank this week.
It’s a relatively short time in terms of Sydney’s
history but the stadium at Sydney Olympic
Park has provided some of the best moments
we’ll ever see in terms of sport, entertainment
and special events.
Not surprisingly most of mine involve rugby
league and as a Panthers tragic, the trio of
Grand Finals I’ve witnessed there – 2003, 2022
and 2023 – are up there as unforgettable moments.
I was also there in 2015 when Johnathan
Thurston kicked the Cowboys into history
with a classic Grand Final finish.
More recently, the Taylor Swift concerts were
on another level; how an artist brings people
together like that is just extraordinary.
Accor Stadium has been the venue we’ve all
had a mixed love affair with over the years.
Sometimes, it’s been the ugly sister of the stadium
family in Sydney. But you can never take
away the memories it’s offered up.
Suburbs change before our eyes
On Sunday, I had lunch with Mum. As she
lives in the inner city, we don’t see each other
as often.
It’s probably not unusual, even for the closest-knit
families, as adult children get immersed
in the hustle and stresses of life.
A couple of weeks ago, Mum confided over
the phone that she had been taking the car
out of the garage for a spin to visit our old
neighbourhood in the West Pennant Hills Valley.
The news made me a bit indignant, even
somewhat sad. “You’re secretly driving all
the way out here, just by yourself?” I asked.
“Why didn’t you tell me so we could meet for
lunch?”
So the other day, she took my advice and we
went for a walk in Carlingford to work off the
meal.
The suburbs to the north of Parramatta, bordering
the Hills Shire Council, are somewhat
traditional and affluent. Framed by bushland
amidst apartments dotting up everywhere
from Northmead to Castle Hill, they increasingly
represent the closest thing to a green belt
that our region has.
Some homes have maintained their respectability
and grace. On a couple of others, the
paint was peeling off.
The strangest sensation of all was seeing the
old BP shut down at the corner of Oakes and
Aiken Road, and the area covered in hoarding.
Absurd to feel nostalgia for a service station,
but there it was.
“It used to be a community meeting place,”
Mum suggested. Something of a stretch. But
Index
in an area where new houses were packed in
row after row, and there was only one place to
check the tyres or grab a carton of flavoured
milk, perhaps she had a point.
Driving now to our old family home, we
passed the spot where Mum had tried to train
me as a teenager behind the wheel and I dinged
a road sign.
On the way there, I remember smiling and
waving to the neighbours out in their gardens
as we drove up the street. It was less pleasant
to limp back into the garage a few minutes later.
Back in the 1980s, our suburb was brand
new.
There were no fences between properties.
Huge dogs used to be out in the open, roaming
building sites.
During school holidays, the kids from next
door would just walk across the garden and
tap on our back window, asking if we wanted
to come out to play.
It was the era of neighbourhood street parties
(what happened to them?).
I remember Eskies full of cordial and freshly
buttered white bread, lashed with multicoloured
hundreds and thousands. Kylie
Minogue and Jason Donovan were on top of
the charts.
Every street was houseproud, with trimmed
hedges and neat lawns. My own Mum and
Dad painstakingly built our garden with rocks
and shrubs purchased from the nearest nursery,
working well into the night.
Our old house now features blue tiles on the
Entertainment................................19-28
roof instead of mauve. The garden looks a bit
more bedraggled. But there are still traces of
my parents’ work.
I spied the old battleaxe driveway where Dad
used to throw me cricket balls. My sisters and I
would play games with our cat Hockey, luring
him to come for a walk up the street, inch by
inch.
Before long we would be hundreds of meters
away from where we started. Then we would
run home and he would scamper past us even
faster.
Back then, you instinctively knew when
someone’s marriage was in trouble, which kid
was acing their exams, whose elderly aunt or
uncle had heart trouble and was slowly pacing
around the neighbourhood for exercise. Even
if the blinds remained closed, who could discount
the possibility that someone was peeking
through? Neighbours became friends, a
product of circumstance, and invited over on
weekends.
The halcyon days didn’t last. The kids grew
up. Life circumstances changed. People
spread all over the city. Coming back, Mum
strangely seemed to be an expert. “Brian’s still
there”, “I think that family has moved on”.
We spend years living in the same streets.
Some stay happily in place forever. Others
seek change and new areas to explore. When
we move, the façade of house after house remains
the same.
But now, there is a new family there. The
face of our suburbs is gently changing behind
closed doors.
Olympic Stadium celebrates 25
years of history-making moments
ELLIE BUSBY
From the Sydney Olympics in
2000 to a slew of NRL Grand
Finals and, of course, Taylor
Swift’s record-breaking concerts,
Accor Stadium has hosted some of
the biggest events to ever take place
in Australia.
Now, the local stadium has marked
perhaps its most momentous celebration
yet – its 25th anniversary.
In honour of the milestone, some
of Australia’s biggest sporting stars
have shared their favourite memories
of Accor Stadium.
For Louise Sauvage, one of Australia’s
most decorated Paralympians, it
was lighting the Paralympic cauldron
and competing at the Sydney
2000 Paralympic Games.
“The Paralympics, winning gold
for my country and having my
friends and family here was just
phenomenal,” she said.
“And of course, lighting the cauldron
at the opening ceremony of the
Olympics.
“I’ve enjoyed coming back here
as obviously it brings back a lot of
memories for me, but I’ve been here
Mark Bosnich, Stirling Mortlock, Mitch Aubusson, Adam Kennedy and Paralympians Louise Savage and Linda
Holt with Swifties Louise Bowerman, Adelaide Bowerman and Stella Bowerman at Accor Stadium. Photo: Phil
Hillyard.
now, and I’ve experienced concerts
and a lot of other great sporting
moments in this stadium.”
Socceroos and Man United star
Mark Bosnich said it was John Aloisi’s
iconic penalty against Uruguay
and, more recently, when Sam Kerr
scored against the Lionesses in what
would be the Matildas’ final game of
the 2023 FIFA World Cup.
But his first ever memory of the
stadium was its official opening.
“My first memory here was
actually the official opening of the
stadium,” Bosnich added.
“Then, literally a month later, we
toured down here with Manchester
United and played against a younger
Australian side.”
Built as the main stadium and
centrepiece for the Sydney 2000
Olympic and Paralympic Games,
Accor Stadium has welcomed
millions of spectators through its
turnstiles over the last quarter of a
century.
Venues NSW Group General
Manager Phil Heads said it’s hard to
narrow the list down to find a best
experience, but there was no denying
the hype surrounding Swift’s
recent concerts.
“I have to say, having worked the
past months in the lead up to the
Taylor Swift concerts and experiencing
just the level of finish and
entertainment that was shown, it
was unlike anything I’ve ever seen,”
Heads told Parra News.
“Watching the Taylor concerts and
the people stream in, it’s reminded
me it is a special place, lots of amazing
things happen there. Kind of
the defining thing for me was each
night she created once in a lifetime
memories for 80,000 people.
“That’s the quality of the place,
you go there and you see something
and hopefully you remember it for
the rest of your lifetime.”
He said there’s still “plenty to
come” for Accor Stadium.
“It is Sydney’s major events venue,
so if the biggest stars in the world
are coming to Sydney that’s where
they’ll play,” he added.
LOCAL NEWS
Council vows to improve safety Busy intersection gets upgrade
ELLIE BUSBY
A Beresford Road Public School student was hit by a vehicle earlier this month.
ELLIE BUSBY
Cumberland Council has vowed to
improve road safety in Greystanes,
after a school student was hit by a
car last week.
A student from Beresford Road Public
School is recovering after they were struck
by a vehicle on Tuesday morning, March 5,
according to Cumberland Council – sparking
concerns for greater safety measures to
be put in place along Beresford Road.
Speaking at the latest Council Meeting,
Councillor Eddy Sarkis said more needs to
be done to reduce congestion and improve
safety along Beresford Road.
“We have implemented some roundabouts
and some speed humps on the street, it’s still
not doing what we wanted it to do, clearly, we
know that from the child that was hit,” he said.
“I am happy to say that the young boy is
now at home after surgery, he’s at home
and recovering, but he did have to undergo
surgery, that shouldn’t happen on our
streets, particularly outside a school where a
child is crossing the road.
“We need to look at something sooner
rather than later, and I’d ask the director to
look at it ASAP and get back to us with some
probable solutions.”
Councillors voted in favour of immediately
investigating traffic improvements to Beresford
Road, outside Beresford Road Public
School, to improve safety outcomes and
reduce congestion.
It’s a turn in the right
direction for drivers in
Guildford, with queues
at the intersection of Guildford
Road with Woodville
Road finally to be reduced
thanks to new traffic lights.
After years of locals calling
out for the upgrades, Transport
for NSW (TfNSW) has
announced right turn green
arrows will be installed for
Guildford Road traffic turning
into Woodville Road in
both directions.
The installation of new red
arrows will also allow pedestrians
to safely cross both
roads while holding traffic
on a red arrow.
A petition calling for the
installation of a green right
turn arrow at the road, which
was signed by hundreds
of frustrated residents,
was originally started by
Cumberland Councillor
Paul Garrard two years ago.
Minister for Roads John
Graham said the traffic
update will improve road
safety in the area.
“Road safety is everyone’s
responsibility and even the
smallest measures can save
lives and improve traffic
management across our
Glenn Elmore, John Graham, Julia Finn and Paul Garrard.
state,” he said.
“This improvement will
provide a safer intersection
and reduce queue lengths
and travel delays on both
roads.”
TfNSW said the lack of
right turn green arrows has
often created a dangerous
situation for motorists, with
vehicles regularly queueing
along Guildford Road for up
to 100 metres waiting for an
opportunity to carry out this
right turn movement.
Motorists often have to wait
for the lights to turn amber
before finding a gap in traffic,
increasing the chances of
a crash as well as potentially
violating road rules.
“The community has been
crying out for a right turn
arrow for at least a decade.
Meanwhile the former
government snubbed us
repeatedly,” Member for
Granville Julia Finn said.
“I was happy to sponsor
[Councillor] Garrard’s petition
and am delighted that
finally this incredibly irritating
and dangerous problem
will be fixed.”
The work is expected to
start in early April and take
approximately four weeks to
complete. The work will be
completed between Sunday
to Friday from 8pm to 5am.
LOCAL NEWS
Rosehill plan continues
• Attempt to advocate for heritage listing fails • Rosehill Racecourse plan labelled
ELLIE BUSBY
A
proposal to transform the
Rosehill Racecourse into
25,000 new homes and a
metro station has divided locals,
with one Parramatta Councillor
warning it will turn the suburb into
a “ghetto”.
A motion moved at the latest
Parramatta Council meeting, which
urged the Chamber to express its
opposition to the proposed sale of
Rosehill Gardens and to instead
advocate for its heritage listing, has
ultimately failed.
It comes after the Australian Turf
Club (ATC) announced last year that
the local landmark could be redeveloped
into a “mini city”, inclusive
of an additional metro west station,
as part of an unsolicited proposal
bought to the State Government.
Our Local Community (OLC)
Councillor Michelle Garrard, who
put forward the motion, said the
loss of the Rosehill Gardens would
have an “unprecedented” impact on
Parramatta.
“Why is the land in the west
expendable? Why isn’t the State
Government wanting to put 25,000
Local representatives have been left divided over the proposed redevelopment
of Rosehill Gardens.
units on land in the eastern or
northern suburbs? Why is the west
lumped with overdevelopment?”
she asked the Chamber.
“I understand this is an unsolicited
proposal by the ATC to the State
Government, however we need to
fight retain Rosehill Racecourse
and not allow Parramatta’s most
vulnerable land to be developed
into a ghetto.”
Chris Waller, who has trained
racehorses at Rosehill Gardens for
the last 24 years, spoke against the
whole site being sold off, suggesting
instead a partial sell-off.
“We all know that Parramatta is
the centre of greater western Sydney,
and it deserves not only a racetrack
but the community centre of the site
Michelle Garrard said losing
Rosehill Gardens would have
an “unprecedented” impact on
Parramatta.
to be preserved and promoted in the
manner that it should be,” he added.
“It is important to have some
green space for the community
and perhaps a partial sell-off and
utilising assets better is a smarter
approach.”
ATC member and OLC Cumberland
Councillor Helen Hughes also
slammed the plans, labelling it as “a
cash grab.”
“Turning this site into housing
development is dumping, again, on
western Sydney, which is dumped
upon, time and time again,” she
said.
“Western Sydney people deserve
better. Retention of Rosehill
Racecourse is imperative and the
Camellia-Rosehill Strategy needs to
be pursued.”
But not everyone was against it.
Executive Director David Borger
expressed Business Western
Sydney’s “unwavering support” for
the proposed metro station at the
Rosehill Gardens site.
“This initiative is not only just
about enhancing our transport
network, it’s a visionary step
towards redefining the future of the
greater Parramatta region and its
surrounding areas,” he said.
“The establishment of a metro
station at this site represents a
pivotal opportunity for economic
revitalisation and sustainable
growth, it will serve as a catalyst
for new business opportunities and
creating thousands of jobs, thereby
boosting the local economy significantly.”
to divide as debate rages
a “cash grab” • Housing crisis fuels debate as Parramatta becomes part of the fix
David Borger said a metro station
at the Rosehill Gardens site would
boost the local economy.
hill-Camellia Landowners Alliance
(RCLA) revealed its $25 billion vision
for a new community in Camellia
and Rosehill, which included plans
for a man-made beach along the
Parramatta River and 20,000 additional
homes in Camellia.
Speaking on behalf of the RCLA,
which is made up of Wentworth
Properties, Billbergia, Abacus and
An artist’s impression of RCLA’s proposed masterplanned Rosehill-Camellia precinct.
the ATC, Development Director of
Billbergia Rick Graf said Sydney’s
second CBD has been starved of
major infrastructure projects for too
long.
“Future development at Camellia,
supported by a metro station,
provides the essential catalyst to
finally remediate and revitalise
what is a declining former industrial
precinct with limited employment
to deliver more homes and jobs and
to open up public access to 1.5km
of the Parramatta riverfront,” he
continued.
“While much has changed in
Parramatta over the last century,
the change over the next century
will be even more dramatic as the
city, for the first time, begins to
receive the transport infrastructure
that it has always deserved.”
Labor Councillor Paul Noack said
building more homes in Rosehill
would help to address the housing
crisis.
“If you think you’re going to get a
metro without housing in the Rosehill-Camellia
area, you’ve got to be
kidding,” he added.
“The right to housing is a human
right, and the prices will deepen
unless we address this.”
When put to a vote, the motion
failed to get enough support to pass,
with some Councillors labelling it
as “incredibly premature” to oppose
the plan in its early stages.
Saying the proposed sale of the
site is out of Council’s control, Independent
Councillors Kellie Darley
and Georgina Valjak abstained from
voting.
“The reality is, Council has absolutely
no role in the proposed sale
of the ATC land as it is a private
commercial matter and the board
and members will decide whether
there is a full, partial or no sale,”
Valjak said.
Local women of
the year recognised
ELLIE BUSBY
Women from Parramatta
and Granville have been
recognised for their
outstanding contribution to the
community as part of this year’s
Local Woman of the Year Awards.
Jaqueline Mosthaghi-Qaziani,
known as Jackie, has been named
as the Parramatta Local Woman of
the Year.
A volunteer member of St John
Ambulance NSW for 35 years,
Mosthaghi-Qaziani has been in
charge of the Parramatta Division
for almost a decade, giving
hundreds of hours to the community
every year with no expectation
of reward.
In addition to her role at St John,
the mother of three is also active
in school activities, most notably
organising the St Kevin’s Catholic
Primary School Eastwood Fete.
"I am very proud to serve the
Parramatta community as a volunteer
St John Ambulance member
and assisting my children's school,”
Mosthaghi-Qaziani said.
“This has been a very humbling
experience and honour, helping
others in need is reward enough.”
State Member for Parramatta
Donna Davis, who presented the
award, called Mosthaghi-Qaziani a
remarkable woman who volunteers
and works hard to contribute to the
community.
“Parramatta is very lucky to have
Jackie, her efforts have not only
changed lives but saved them,” she
said.
“I congratulate Jackie on her
selection as the Parramatta Local
Woman of the Year for 2024 and
also acknowledge all the dedicated
and deserving nominees. Thank
you for all you do.”
Over in Granville, Randa Kattan
received the prestigious award in
recognition of her significant work
to actively support the community.
As the CEO of Arab Council
Australia, a secular, non-profit
independent community organisation,
Kattan works to bring about
social justice and improve the lives
of the most vulnerable people in
the community.
Kattan took up leadership of
the leadership in the late 1990s,
transforming it into a respected
institution that makes key contributions
across the policy dialogue
in Australia and abroad.
State Member for Granville Julia
Finn commended Kattan on the
honour.
“This is a well-deserved honour
for Randa. Her unparalleled
commitment and ongoing contribution
to the betterment of the
local community will shape our
society into a greater place,” she
said.
“Randa is an inspiration for other
women in the community to realise
their potential and make strides to
ensure the Granville electorate is
an empowering place for women
to live, work and visit.”
An annual program celebrating
outstanding women in local
communities, the Local Woman
of the Year Awards coincided with
International Women’s Day on
March 8.
NSW Minister for Women Jodie
Harrison congratulated the state’s
Local Woman of the Year Award
2024 recipients.
“Women who contribute to
local areas are the pillars of their
communities. They selflessly dedicate
a positive difference,” Harrison
said.
HOROSCOPES
Relax & Unwind
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Money matters should start to improve,
as Venus moves through your finance
zone (until April 5). The Sun and Pluto
send a confidence boost your way
(especially involving a personal project
or social media) and a local community
connection could prove fortuitous. So be
on the look-out for a lucky opportunity
when it appears. It’s time to turn an
abstract dream into a rock-solid reality!
If you hesitate or procrastinate, then
you’ll miss the boat.
On Wednesday it’s the Equinox (when
day and night are of equal length), which
favours meditation and contemplation,
as you aim for more equilibrium and
perspective. Pluto is powering through
your solitude and spirituality zone,
which further highlights peace-of-mind
and strong self-esteem. Then mighty
Mars moves into Pisces (until April 30),
so strive to be more proactive about
pursuing your creative and spiritual
goals. No procrastination allowed Pisces!
This week it’s the Equinox on Wednesday
and the Sun shifts into Aries and
then links up with Pluto. Plus Mars (your
ruling planet) moves into Pisces. So the
current astrology is all about maintaining
your equilibrium, celebrating your
individuality, and pursuing your dreams
within a climate of transformation and
reflection. Draw inspiration from birthday
great Reese Witherspoon, “I believe
ambition is not a dirty word. It’s just
believing in yourself and your abilities.”
The buzz word this week is confidence!
Confidence to learn, to dream, to grow.
With no less than six planets activating
your career and aspirations zones, your
motto is from birthday great, actress/
producer Reese Witherspoon, “With
the right kind of coaching and determination,
you can accomplish anything.”
Venus (your boss planet) links up with
Saturn on Thursday/Friday which
means your hard work, patience and
persistence will pay off … in the end.
Are you being too subjective and
short-sighted about a current issue? It’s
the Equinox on Wednesday when day
and night are of equal length. So take a
step back, adjust your focus, and view
things from a much broader and wiser
perspective. Balance is the key. Saturn
hooks up with Venus in your career zone,
so it’s also time to get serious about your
professional ambitions. Roll up your
sleeves and get to work, as you power
through projects and tie up loose ends.
Have you been avoiding a tricky person
or a difficult situation? Crabs tend to
side-step problems (or just put your head
in the sand). With Mercury and the Sun
moving through dynamic Aries (in your
work zone), try a more direct approach
as you face challenges head on. Aim to
communicate your ideas in positive and
proactive ways. As birthday belle Reese
Witherspoon observes, “Confidence is
everything.” Travel and adventure are
also on the menu.
L E O
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
V I R G O
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
L I B R A
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
On Wednesday the Sun (your ruling
planet) transits into fellow fire sign Aries,
and then links up with powerful Pluto.
From mid-week onwards you’ll be at your
feisty, fabulous best – and your belligerent,
bossy worst! It’s Equinox week, so
try to find an outlet for your fiery energy,
and a way to bring more balance and
harmony into your busy world. Thursday
and Friday boost personal magnetism
and favour taking an ambitious project a
step further.
You’re impatient about making things
happen according to your strict timetable
but the planets caution you about
taking shortcuts and relying on others.
Don’t expect family, friends or colleagues
to drop everything and hand you your
dream. There is just no substitute for
hard work and thorough preparation. It’s
also Equinox week so stop overcommitting!
Smart Virgos will calm down and
recalibrate to a slower, steadier and more
sustainable pace.
Is a close relationship stuck in a stultifying
rut? This week the Sun and Mercury
encourage you to blast away the cobwebs
and look at things from a fresh angle. But
how well do you really know your nearest
and dearest? Powerful Pluto is in your
romance, children and friendship zone,
plus Venus (your patron planet) links up
with Saturn. So it’s time to dig deeper
and gain valuable insights into the inner
motivations of a lover, friend or family
member.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Sensitive Scorpio – you’re a capricious
creature, constantly buffeted by intense
emotions and deep desires. This week
we celebrate the Equinox (when day and
night are of equal length) which will help
to stabilise your temperamental moods
and balance your brooding nature.
Attached Scorpio – remember there’s a
fine line between ardent affection and
clingy obsession. Unhappily single? You
could find yourself drawn to someone
with a powerful personality.
Sagittarians can be selfish, self-indulgent
souls. This week, with the Sun and
Mercury spotlighting your leisure and
pleasure zone, you’ll be preoccupied
with your immediate entertainment
wants and personal pampering needs.
However, over the next few years, you’ll
gradually shift your focus further afield
as Pluto teaches you that family matters,
local community connections and social
responsibilities are just as important as
individual priorities.
Venus and Saturn highlight long-term
relationships and local community
connections. And the Sun visits your
domestic zone, so it’s a good week to
support a family member, get stuck into
a DIY project or clean and de-clutter your
living space. But how will you decide
what to keep and what to discard? Draw
inspiration from designer and birthday
great William Morris, “Have nothing in
your house which you know not to be
useful or believe to be beautiful.”
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
With so many lip products, how
do you find what’s perfect for you?
If you’ve noticed more lip
products coming onto the
market than ever, you’re
not alone. Though much of
this has to do with changing
trends around just what products
people are using on their
lips, from glosses to oils and
stains, there may be another
reason for the oversaturation
– and it all comes down to ‘girl
math’.
During the 2001 recession,
Leonard Lauder, the chairman
of cosmetics firm Estée Lauder,
coined the term ‘lipstick index’.
Despite the gloomy economic
state in the aftermath of 9/11,
lipstick sales in the US had
risen by 11 per cent, leading
Lauder to conclude that lipstick
sales were a good way to gauge
the state of the economy – the
thought process for consumers
being that though that ‘Euro
Summer’ holiday or fancy
dinner might be out of reach,
what’s the harm in splurging
on a new lip gloss?
In the years that followed,
this has proven itself to be
true, being replicated in
Australia during the COVID-19
pandemic, and again currently,
as Sephora rides the lipstick
index wave to a whopping €20
billion in annual global sales in
the coming years.
Whilst the lipstick index
doesn’t apply just to lipstick,
and rather to any small luxury
people can purchase to get a
boost while times are tough, it is
one of the easiest to ‘girl math’ –
a term not necessarily specific
to gender, but referring to the
mental gymnastics that can
sometimes be done to justify
a purchase. In my opinion, it’s
really just rational economic
decision making – why spend
$20 on shipping, when you can
just buy another $20 item to get
it to the free threshold?
In saying all of this, if you
are in the market for a new lip
product, there has never been
a better time to do so, with
endless options available right
at your fingertips. And, what
would an installment of ‘In
The Mirror’ be without a few
recommendations?
Laneige Lip Products
When it comes to products
that are guaranteed to look
good, whilst also ensuring your
lips stay hydrated throughout
the day, you can’t go past
Laneige.
I regularly use their Lip Sleeping
Mask at night, and carry the
Glowy Balm version with me in
my handbag – I use the shade
‘Gummy Bear’ and can attest
to the fact that it’s not as scary
as it looks. However, I recently
picked up the Lip Treatment
Balm and I am obsessed. It has
a pretty, pearlescent finish,
piña colada scent, and a handy
applicator that fits right into
the lid for convenience.
Fenty Beauty Pro Kiss’R
Luscious Lip Balm
The Fenty Beauty Pro Kiss’R
Luscious Lip Balm has recently
become one of my favourites
for every day. It has just the
right amount of colour payoff
for me, without looking like
a full coverage lipstick, and
maintains a glossy finish.
Summer Fridays Lip
Butter Balm
Summer Fridays’ Lip Butter
Balms are trendy for a reason.
They smell delicious, look
beautiful on the lips, and come
in plenty of shades to ensure
there’s something for everyone.
I use the shade ‘Vanilla Beige’
and find that it works really
well for day-to-day wear, but I
do find that this one tends to
run out the quickest, so just
be wary of this when choosing
what to spend your money on!
Civic Link Block 3 – Closure of Horwood Place from January 2025
Council, in partnership with the NSW Government, is working to transform the heart
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
PETE RETURNS
TO THE WEST
CASSIDY PEARCE
Over the course of his career,
singer-songwriter
Pete Murray said some
of his happiest moments
have been when listeners
have told him how they’ve connected
with his music, with lyrics in hit songs
like ‘Better Days’ and ‘Opportunity’
sharing relatable and encouraging stories
about getting through hard times.
But, he admits a few of these sentimental
moments may have been misplaced.
“‘So Beautiful’ is one that a lot of
people connect to. It’s a love song, but
it’s a love song about someone that’s
changed, and maybe you don’t like
them so much anymore because of
how they’ve changed,” he said.
“A lot of people play that at their weddings,
and I remember doing shows
and going, ‘Guys, this is not a wedding
song! I don’t think you get it!’.”
Murray has been singing and playing
guitar since the age of 22, encouraged
by his late friend and first child’s
namesake, Charlie.
“He came into my room one day
and he was really excited, and he said,
‘I’ve always wanted to learn the guitar,
and I’m going to go and do it’, and I
thought ‘That’s fantastic, maybe I’ll do
the same’... I went and had a couple of
lessons, and he never did,” he said.
“He didn’t know that I was learning,
so years later when he was teaching on
the Gold Coast and I was in Brisbane, I
got in touch with him and said, ‘We’ve
got to catch up, I’ve got a surprise for
you’. He came over to my place and I
got the guitar out and played some
Neil Young songs, because we were
big Neil Young fans, and he was blown
away.
“Sadly, about 12 months later, he
passed away, had an aneurysm. I’m
a big believer in fate, so if it wasn’t
for him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
Murray has earned himself 17 ARIA
nominations and sold over 1.2 million
albums in Australia, remaining a constant
in the local music scene for over
20 years.
Despite touring consistently through
all of this, he hasn’t made a stop in
Penrith in more than a decade. All of
that is about to change with his upcoming
show at Panthers – and Murray
can’t wait.
“I’m well overdue to come back and
play there,” he said.
“It wasn’t on purpose that we went
away from Penrith, because there was
such a good following out there and a
really hardcore fanbase.
“Every time I would go out there, it
would sell out.
“It’s actually hard to believe now
that we haven’t been back there for 10
years. I’m really excited to head back
just to see what fans are still interested
in coming back again!”
Despite this show being a part of
Great Southern Nights, Murray said
that the setlist is similar to the tour
that’s accompanied his greatest hits
album, ‘Best of Pete Murray’, meaning
fans are guaranteed to hear all the
songs they know and love.
“One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be
a great show,” he said.
“My shows with the band now are
very exciting, playing all the songs
people want to hear. There’s also lots
of sing-a-longs now, and they’re just
incredible, because everyone knows
the songs so well.”
Pete Murray will be on at Penrith
Panthers on Sunday, March 24 at
6.30pm. Tickets are $65. For more
information or to book, visit penrith.
At the movies...
REVIEW
The Great Escaper

1 hour, 36 minutes
‘The Great Escaper’ marks the
end of Michael Caine’s extraordinary
career as an actor. But is it a
fitting ending?
Absolutely.
At 90-years-old, Caine delivers
one of his most poignant performances
yet as Bernard Jordan, a
man whose real-life story made
global headlines when he staged a
“great escape” from his care home
to join fellow war veterans at the
D-Day Landings 70th anniversary
in 2014.
It’s a touching story that was always
bound to be brought to the
big screen. But it was also one at
risk of excessive sentimentality.
‘The Great Escaper’ avoids this by
focusing largely on Bernard’s relationship
with his wife, and their
interactions with care staff and fellow
veterans, both young and old.
The result is a film that is as much
about coming to terms with the
trauma of war as it is a love story.
It would have only been half as
good, of course, if it weren’t for
the talented Glenda Jackson, who
plays Bernard’s wife of 60-years,
Rene.
Jackson, who sadly died last year,
delivers her final performance
exceptionally well. Her conversations
with the staff at the care
home are full of wit and wisdom,
garnering some of the biggest
laughs throughout the whole film,
while her moments of reminiscing
tug on the heartstrings of even the
toughest of movie-goers.
Naturally, a film about paying
tribute to the lives that were lost in
World War II and growing old with
the person you love was always going
to pack an emotional punch.
For myself, it was impossible to
ignore the muffled sobs and sniffles
that took place in the cinema at
some particularly moving scenes.
It may not be for the people who
prefer their movies jam-packed full
of car chases and action, but for
those after a heartfelt story about
forgiveness and enduring love,
‘The Great Escaper’ is a must-see.
Just make sure to bring your tissues.
Nathan Taylor
TV NEWS
Ê Channel Seven has announced its three
judges for its new Chris Brown-hosted reality
series ‘Dream Home’. Joining the highly
anticipated series are ‘Luxe Listings Sydney’
buyers agent Simon Cohen, interior designer
Rose Morely, and renovator Lana Taylor.
The series, which is expected after Easter,
sees six pairs of Aussies renovate dilapidated
suburban family homes into astonishing new
dream homes.
Ê With ‘Eurovision’ around the corner, SBS
has announced relatively unknown duo Electric
Fields as Australia’s entry into the mega
contest. Electric Fields vocalist Zaachariaha
Fielding and producer / keyboardist Michael
Ross merge traditional with electronica
through the song ‘One Milkali (One Blood)’.
The song incorporates Yankunytjatjara; an
Aboriginal language of the Anangu peoples,
one of the oldest living cultures on earth. You
can listen to the song on YouTube. ‘Eurovision’
kicks off on Wednesday, May 8 on SBS.
Ê A special version of ‘America’s Got
Talent’ premiered on 7flix on Thursday
night – ‘America’s Got Talent: Fantasy
DREAM HOME, CHANNEL SEVEN
WEDNESDAY, MAY 8
League’. Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie
Mandel and Mel B each build a roster of their
favourite acts and guide them throughout
the competition as they hope to be crowned
the champion. Aussie acts Hans and Sheldon
Riley feature. New episodes of ‘AGT’ air every
Thursday at 7.30pm on 7flix. You can also
catch up via 7plus.
Ê The new season of ‘Selling Houses Australia’
premieres on Wednesday, March 20
at 8.30pm on LifeStyle. Host and real estate
expert Andrew Winter is back as well as interior
design expert Wendy Moore, and landscaper
Dennis Scott. Andrew, Wendy, and
Dennis not only deliver advice and makeovers
that could change these homeowner’s
lives, but they also provide a wealth of real
estate knowledge, design tips and money-smart
style ideas that anyone can achieve
in their own homes – whether they’re selling
or not.
EUROVISION, SBS
Ê One of my favourite shows is returning
to Stan very soon. ‘Hacks’, starring the
legendary Jean Smart and fellow actress
Hannah Einbinder, will drop on Friday,
May 3. ‘Hacks’ explores a dark mentorship
between Deborah Vance (Smart), a legendary
Las Vegas comedian, and Ava (Einbinder),
an entitled, outcast 25-year-old aspiring to
be a writer. Season three picks up one year
on from the finale of season two, which
saw Deborah Vance cut the cord with her
longtime mentee, Ava, to encourage her to
pursue her own dreams. Joining the cast
this season will be Helen Hunt, Christina
Hendricks and Christopher Lloyd.
Ê The second season of ‘House of the
Dragon’, the prequel to ‘Game of Thrones’,
will premiere in June on Binge and Foxtel.
An exact airdate is yet to be confirmed,
but all signs point to a winter (wink, wink)
premiere.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
Putting best foot forward
Parramatta Park Runners and Walkers group has been around since 1968
NATHAN TAYLOR
Did you know that one of Sydney’s
oldest running clubs is based right
here in Parramatta?
Since July 1968, the Parramatta Park
Runners and Walkers group come together at
noon every Friday for a run or walk around the
picturesque surrounds of Parramatta Park.
With 100 active members signed up and
with more and more people returning to their
Parramatta CBD offices, the group believe it’s
the perfect time to expand.
“The club really struggled during the COVID
period with attendances dropping off, but it’s
starting to pick back up again,” Parramatta
Park Runners and Walkers captain, Peter
Wykes told Parra News.
“We have kids under 10 right up to people in
their late 80s participating. We have one lady,
named Yvonne, who is 81 and she’s a bloody
good runner. She can do 5km in 30 mins.”
Held rain, hail or shine, participants meet at
The Dairy Cottage in the centre of Parramatta
Park at 12pm Friday before setting off on their
3km walk, 5km or 8km run.
“We’ve been meeting and finishing at the
same place since 1968,” Wykes said.
“We have quite a diverse mix of people in
terms of age, gender, and nationality – everyone
is welcome. It’s for people of all abilities
also.
The Parramatta Park Runners and Walkers group.
“If you want to get out and take in some fresh
air during your Friday lunch break, it’s the
perfect opportunity to do so.”
Wykes has only been the captain of the
Parramatta Park Runners and Walkers group
for two years, but quickly discovered that
everyone has their own reasons for taking
part.
“Mental health is why I got involved. I work
in IT, so it’s great for me to get out and not
think about work for a while,” he said.
“Other people take part because they are
training for running events, for fitness, for
family get togethers. We even have people
travel from out of town to be involved – it’s a
great community.”
Whatever your purpose for pounding the
pavement, the Parramatta Park Runners and
Walkers group is open to everybody and has
lasted the test of time for a reason.
It costs $25 per year to cover any social
events and you can join right away and start
pounding the pavement.
