BUILDING YOUR
KNOWLEDGE
AND MORE...
A new partnership programme
for today and tomorrow
The pitfalls of the ‘stack ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap’ mentality – and its
impact on installers, the wider industry and its collective reputation – is
evident in this issue of Total Installer.
“If we learned anything from the aftermath of Covid, it was that fantastic sales
can often mask poor profitability, especially as the cost of raw materials rise,”
says Business Pilot’s Neil Cooper-Smith in the latest BP Barometer (p.14). “If
business leaders don’t keep a constant eye on this, then it could spell trouble,”
he adds.
By the same token, Certass’ Danelle Vanstone reports how some installers
posting on the trade association’s Facebook forum “are baffled by their
competitors’ inexplicably low prices, which seem unsustainable against the
backdrop of rising product costs and overheads” (p.16).
As Danelle suggests, the current ‘race to the bottom’ trend could also risk a return
to the ‘Wild West’ image of decades gone by, with Steven Sanderson, Director at
Certass installer, Sereco Windows, corroborating these concerns as he highlights
the negative impact of low-quality, low-price competitors on the market (p.40).
Elsewhere in this issue, systems supplier Profine UK has placed the WarmCore
hybrid product range and a new partner programme at the heart of its plans
for 2024 (p.18); AluFoldDirect’s Rhodri John shares his insights and advice on
a strategic approach to building regulations and energy efficiency (p.20); and
RegaLead’s Guy Hubble discusses the advantages of training to spray, as the
renovation market for composite doors takes off (p.34).
In addition, DGCOS’ Faisal Hussain reveals what listeners can expect from
the organisation’s latest podcast series (p.54), and Hultafors’ Peter Dumigan
examines the evolution and practicalities of the work trouser, from warriors on
horse-back centuries ago, to protecting your knees on the job site today (p.62)...
And this is just the tip of the iceberg, so read on for all of this and more...
I hope you enjoy the issue!
FDM OPENS FIRE DOOR TRAINING CENTRE
The UK’s first practical training centre for the
fire door industry has been officially opened
by Councillor Sandra Walmsley, Mayor of Bury,
in Bury, Greater Manchester.
The purpose-built 3,000ft² academy has been
launched by Fire Door Maintenance (FDM) to raise
safety standards across the industry. Comprising
different types of fire doors and components from
a range of manufacturers, the facility will provide
a dedicated space for hands-on training plus
classrooms for theory-based learning.
Accredited by GQA Qualifications, an awarding
body for specialist and occupational roles, the
academy will offer a variety of courses. The first to
launch will be a fire door inspector course, followed
by a course centred on fire door maintenance, and
another focusing on fire door installation.
As well as ensuring compliance with the latest
fire safety regulation, the accredited training will
respond to the Hackitt report’s recommendations
following the Grenfell Tower fire. A variety of fire
safety awareness courses will also be on offer for
• Birmingham – Thursday 18th April at the
Moor Hall Hotel, B75 6LN
• Leeds – Thursday 25th April at the
Woodlands Hotel, LS27 7LY
• Bristol – Thursday 2nd May at Berwick
Lodge, BS10 7TD
• Glasgow – Thursday 9th May at the Dakota
Hotel Eurocentral, G2 4DP
To book a place, contact Sandra.berg@
quickslide.co.uk with your chosen venue.
L-R: UAP's David Jennings, Cllr Walmsley, Nicola John and
Cllr Eamonn O’Brien at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
anyone wishing to learn about the latest legislation
and how to raise safety standards.
Owned by UAP, FDM is led by former business
consultant Nicola John who has two decades
of experience in the door manufacturing and
construction industry.
Nicola said: “The Training Academy is the first
to offer practical fire door training in the largest
centre of its kind. The Hackitt report underlined
the importance of the ‘golden thread’ and this is at
the centre of our specialist training. Each course
will underline how vital it is to source primary test
evidence and the risk of changing or substituting
components in a fire door.”
NEWS IN BRIEF
• A new data-driven digital tool to
help installers support customers with
tailored energy efficiency advice has been
launched by the Energy Saving Trust (EST).
Users of Homewise receive a summary of
suitable energy efficiency improvements,
estimated costs, guidance on possible
increases in their home’s EPC rating, potential
energy-bill savings and carbon emissions
reductions. Property, manufacturing and
installer organisations that would like to
know more can email the EST at
business@est.org.uk
• Tradespeople are being urged to
step-up cyber security measures after
new figures revealed almost a quarter of
the industry had fallen victim to online
criminals in the last 12 months.
James Trevis, NFU Mutual’s cyber specialist,
said: “Cyber crime is sadly an everincreasing
threat to our industries – and
tradespeople are no different – so we’re
urging bosses and employees to stay vigilant.
It’s important to remember that if you
utilise digital technology in any way to run
your business, you’re potentially exposing
yourself to cyber security threats – and the
ramifications can be very serious.”
• Software company, Tommy Trinder,
reports that the firm has hit 500
subscribers to its Framepoint platform.
Founder and CEO, Chris Brunsdon, said:
“Let’s face it, turning up to sell windows with
a pad and pen no longer cuts it. Homeowners
want to see exactly what they are getting;
they want to try before they buy. And Tommy
Trinder is proving to be the tool for the job.”
Chris reports that £1.8bn of quotes were
prepared for homeowners via the platform in
2023, up 60% on 2022, with quote values
climbing towards £7,400 over the last six
months. The data also shows that aluminium
and timber now account for around half of
everything quoted by installers.
8 HOUSEBUILDERS UNDER CMA SCRUTINY
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)
has launched an investigation into suspected
breaches of competition law by eight
housebuilders.
The announcement comes on the back of the
publication of the CMA’s final report on the
housebuilding market in Great Britain, which
found that the 'complex and unpredictable'
planning system, together with 'the limitations of
speculative private development', is responsible
for the persistent under delivery of new homes.
Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA, said:
“The CMA has opened a new investigation into
the suspected sharing of commercially sensitive
information by housebuilders which could be
influencing the build-out of sites and the prices of
new homes.
While this issue is not one of the main drivers of
the problems we’ve highlighted in our report, it is
FRAMEXPRESS CELEBRATES OTIF SUCCESS
Framexpress has released its ‘On Time, In Full
(OTIF) & Accurate' performance data, with the
trade fabricator recording an 85% success rate.
The company's ‘On Time, In Full & Accurate’
delivery performance metric has been used
to measure the success and quality of each
customer’s order for many years. It was put in
place to ensure that orders were delivered to
customers on time, as requested and without fault.
Framexpress says the latest data 'shows a figure
many are yet to achieve across the industry'.
Stuart Green, joint Managing Director at
Framexpress, said: “Achieving an 85% success
rate is a huge milestone for us, one myself and
the team have worked really hard to achieve. I’m
incredibly happy with the team's efforts over the
past year, and we’re looking forward to providing
the best for our customers in 2024, too.
“Of course, we’re striving to break into the 90%,
but we’re constantly looking for ways to ensure
important we tackle anti-competitive behaviour if
we find it.”
The eight housebuilders whose activities are being
investigated are Barratt Developments, Bellway,
The Berkeley Group, Bloor Homes, Persimmon,
Redrow, Taylor Wimpey and Vistry Group.
At the time of Total Installer going to press, the
CMA had not reached any conclusions as to
whether or not competition law has been infringed.
our customers receive nothing but the best
from us, so we hope that these metrics will only
continue to rise.”
The Telford-based fabricator has also made a
number of significant investments in the past
few months, including machinery worth more
than £300,000, and an additional 15,000ft 2
manufacturing facility in Tweedale, a 'stones-throw'
away from its Telford HQ.
News Roundup
NEW CUSTOMER PORTAL
OPENS ITS DOORS
Hardware manufacturer VBH has launched
its new VBH24 Customer Portal.
The Portal builds on the success of the
previous VBH online shop, but, says VBH,
offers users 'a number of very useful
additional benefits'.
NEW CARBON LEVY TO IMPACT ALI SECTOR
Sheerline is highlighting the Government’s
plans to introduce a Carbon Levy, which it
says has 'big implications' for importers of
carbon-intensive products like aluminium.
Reports in December 2023 suggested the Carbon
Levy may come into effect by 2027, with many
systems companies around the UK 'scrambling to
get themselves ready', according to Sheerline.
For more news and the latest updates, visit www.total-installer.co.uk
As well as placing orders, VBH24 users
can view and download supplementary
information including drawings, literature,
guarantee information and safety data sheets
through the Portal.
VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson said:
“The new features have struck a chord
with many people who were previously not
that keen on ‘online shopping’, with many
additional customers now being willing to
give it a go. Once they see how convenient
it is, and see some of the new features
including order templates, cost centres, item
sharing and budgets, they quickly become
VBH24 converts.”
In terms of aluminium, Sheerline says not just large
manufacturers but businesses of all sizes could
potentially be affected, and is urging fabricators
within the fenestration industry to 'review their
suppliers ahead of time to avoid increased costs'.
Imported aluminium looks set to be hit with an
additional charge through the Carbon Levy – costs
that systems companies who rely on overseas
supply will look to their fabricators to cover,
according to Sheerline.
Ross Hartshorn, Technical Production Director at
Sheerline, commented: “Sheerline is ready for
the future, but many manufacturers will struggle
in the coming months and years because the
Carbon Levy has the potential to shake up the
UK aluminium market, which extends to the
fenestration industry.
“Our priority is ensuring our fabricators know that
when they choose Sheerline, they’re choosing
simplicity. We are a one-stop supplier of wholehouse
premium aluminium solutions that are
designed, extruded, moulded, painted, and
assembled in-house. We’re the obvious choice
for fabricators who want to embrace simplicity,”
he added.
For more information email info@sheerline.com
Gary added: “The range of customers using
the Portal extends from sole traders spending
£100 a month, right up to our very largest
customers, who spend millions of pounds with
VBH. Something that they have in common
is that they find ordering is easier through
VBH24, so I would urge anybody to try it. It
really is a 24-hour doorway to our stocks.”
Contract The Business Talk Pilot Barometer
SALES CONTINUE TO RISE
Many are expecting a ‘difficult year’ but Neil Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst at Business Pilot,
reveals the retail stats, so far, look more encouraging...
Average sales increased again in February.
It may have only been by 1.2% to 59.1,
but it demonstrates that the big leap in
January wasn’t a one-off. It is also worth noting
that this figure is 25.7% higher than the same
period last year.
Leads have fallen back marginally – down 9.9%
to 126 – but they are still 15.8% higher than the
same period a year ago.
In most years we see both average sales and
average leads drop back in February, most likely
because January is a correction following a quiet
December. Only in 2021 did we see both sets of
figures increase in February, and that was when
demand went through the roof following Covid.
This year, many people are expecting a difficult
year, but so far this isn’t reflected in the data –
especially from a retail point of view.
When we take the other metrics into account, an
interesting picture starts to emerge. Remember,
when looking at this data, that the current mood
music is one of negativity and concern that 2024
is going to be a tricky year.
First of all, the average order value for February
2024 fell by 3% to £3,054. And this figure is
34% lower than the same period last year –
which itself was actually a small increase on the
previous month.
But this time last year was characterised by a fall
in demand in the volume market, which is why we
saw average order values remain high. The fact
they are lower this year – and currently falling
month on month – suggests that either demand
is driven by distress purchases, or the volume
market is picking up.
The fact that average leads are considerably higher
this year makes me think that it is the latter.
I can understand why some people are jumpy
when we continue to see companies enter
administration. Take fabricator Euramax for
example, which manufactures and supplies
PVC-U windows and doors for sectors including
modular construction, leisure and DIY.
It entered administration following the collapse
of a major customer, and reports reveal that
The Business Pilot Barometer offers a monthly analysis of the key trends defining window and door retail,
drawing on real industry data collated by the Business Pilot customer relationship management system.
Business Pilot uses cloud-based technologies to give installers complete visibility of every element of their
operation from leads and conversions to job scheduling, cost of installation, service calls, and financial reporting.
www.businesspilot.co.uk
profitability had dropped considerably since the
beginning of 2020; for the year ending June 30,
2022, it reported a turnover of £26.5 million, with
pre-tax profits of £129,000. That’s a profitability
of less than 0.5%.
There have been – and will be – others. Euramax
isn’t the best example, because they are a
commercial fabricator, but it does serve to remind
us that we all need to keep an eye on profitability,
and that cash is king.
If we learned anything from the aftermath of
Covid, it was that fantastic sales can often mask
poor profitability, especially as the cost of raw
materials rise. We know that if business leaders
don’t keep a constant eye on this, then it could
spell trouble.
But Business Pilot can give you the numbers you
need to keep on top of your business, so there is
no excuse to be in the dark.
NEW

Contract Certass Members’ Talk Forum
THE COST OF PRICING TOO LOW
Reporting on the Certass Facebook Forum’s hottest topics, Danelle Vanstone, Head of
Membership for Certass, reveals the subject matter dominating conversations this month,
from compliance with the Building Safety Act, to unsustainable price drops.
The world of glazing continues to evolve
rapidly, with installers navigating the
complex interplay between technological
advancement and stringent regulatory
compliance. The Certass members-only forum
has been abuzz over the past month, highlighting
key trends, practical advice, and challenges that
are of utmost importance to every installer. Here’s
a combination of the most engaging topics that
have dominated the conversations this month.
Compliance and consumer education
The Building Safety Act has sparked significant
discussion. The recent seminar, sponsored by
Certass and featuring Jon Vanstone of the BSR,
gave an in-depth look at the implications for the
glazing sector. Installers are urged not to miss the
insights, which are critical for staying compliant.
The on-site narratives have resonated with
many members. Several installers report
frequent misconceptions among site workers
and homeowners, and the technical feasibility
and thermal efficiency of slim frames. The
preference for top openings over fire escapes
is another sticking point. Though explaining
regulations usually helps sway customers,
some have encountered companies that are not
registered with a Competent Person Scheme and
simply bypass any registration and flout building
regulations – a reckless game of regulatory
roulette. Such discussions highlight frustrations
but also break down feelings of isolation as the
Forum community offers support and solidarity.
Pricing pressures
The puzzle of pricing pressures is more perplexing
than ever. Some installers are baffled by their
competitors’ inexplicably low prices, which seem
unsustainable against the backdrop of rising
product costs and overheads. This trend raises
concerns about quality and the industry’s longterm
sustainability, not to mention its reputation
Danelle Vanstone
“Some installers
are baffled by
their competitors’
inexplicably low
prices, which seem
unsustainable against
rising costs and
overheads”
– risking the perception of a “Wild West” rather
than a professional and trustworthy sector.
Shoddy supplies
The ongoing issue of product quality, with no
signs of improvement from suppliers, is alarming.
Reports of scratched frames, incorrect hinges,
and the need for constant adjustments have
led to additional costs and delays for installers,
further strained by the dependency of final
payments from customers on these rectifications.
‘Grevolution’
An animated thread shed light on homeowner
preferences, with a notable surge in demand for
Crittal-style products and slimline aluminium,
among others. The ‘grevolution’ in Yorkshire
stands out, with grey becoming the dominant
hue in home aesthetics. Also, the trend towards
varying colour options has prompted some
installers to invest in in-house spray booths for
greater flexibility.
Asking the right questions
The conversation extended to the queries
homeowners should pose before hiring a window
installer. Several included enquiries about product
details, asking about building regs certificates,
warranty specifics, and how deposits are protected.
Further suggestions included a professional
online presence, evidence of meeting industry
standards, professional communication and
quality of products are critical factors that
homeowners should consider.
Trickle venting
However, the reality often boils down to price
and availability. Installers note that some
homeowners do their due diligence, but many are
influenced by word-of-mouth or social media.
Interestingly, questions about trickle vents have
polarised opinions, indicating a divide between
installers and their customers – the standard
line in the industry is that ‘homeowners don’t
like them’, however several Certass members
have reported that proper communication and
taking the time to educate often resolves any
reservations.
To round up, the past month has shown that
installers are grappling with a mix of regulatory,
technical, and consumer-related challenges. From
ensuring compliance with the Building Safety Act
to managing client expectations and maintaining
quality amidst pricing pressures, installers
are seeking a balance in a market that’s as
demanding as it is dynamic.
Systems
BRINGING HOME THE BENEFITS
After strong and continuing investment in its Huthwaite site, systems supplier Profine UK is
set for sales of its brands to increase in 2024, with the WarmCore hybrid product range and
a new partner programme at the heart of its progress. Total Installer reports...
Since acquiring the former Synseal
manufacturing facility at Huthwaite,
Nottinghamshire, in 2020, Profine UK,
owner of the Kömmerling brand, has invested
extensively in people, products and processes.
With a multi-million investment programme
helping to transform the site into what the
systems supplier describes as a ‘world-class’
manufacturing facility, Profine predicts export
sales of its brands, including Kömmerling’s
70mm PVC-U systems and the aluminium/PVC-U
hybrid WarmCore, to grow considerably over the
next five years.
WarmCore
With 2024 billed as a ‘pivotal’ year for
the WarmCore product platform in the UK,
Kömmerling is looking to ramp-up interest from
its existing customers, as well extending its reach
to the wider aluminium sector.
Designed to accommodate triple glazing from the
outset, WarmCore windows can achieve
1.3 (W/m 2 K) double glazed and down to 0.80
(W/m 2 K) triple glazed as standard with 44mm units.
Featuring casement, flush and tilt and turn windows,
along with ‘feature-rich’ patio and bi-folding doors
that also provide impressive thermal insulating
properties, the WarmCore product offer is supported
by a new range of literature, with POS materials
‘to follow imminently’. A new website is being
built for WarmCore and there will be a dedicated
social media platform launched at Fensterbau
too. From a UK perspective, there will also be
an integrated advertising and direct marketing
campaign commencing from March onwards.
Kömmerling At Home
With a newly opened Design Centre, used to host
visits from Kömmerling’s customers, prospects
and business associates a stand-out feature of
“It is important that Kömmerling products stand
out for our customers and meet their needs and
the high expectations of consumers”
the Huthwaite facility, another key development
aimed at installers, manufacturers and other
businesses within the supply chain, is the launch
of partner programme, Kömmerling At Home.
Comprised of elements including a digital hub for
marketing and technical assistance, industryrelated
news, and information on Kömmerling’s
extensive product range, the Kömmerling At Home
Training Academy is another stand-out feature,
offering certified online training, free online
coaching webinars and access to an enquiry
forum offering expert advice.
Kevin Warner, sales and marketing director of
Profine UK and Kömmerling, said: “Kömmerling
At Home has been part of our strategic vision for
the last 12 months with the view to gaining strong
insights into our complete supply chain. It is
important that Kömmerling products stand out for
our customers and meet their needs and the high
expectations from consumers of what to expect
from a global brand.”
‘Fantastic benefits’
Robert Thiroff, Managing Director of Profine UK
and Kömmerling, added: “We created a detailed
plan of investment here in Huthwaite from the
very start of the acquisition with a clear vision of
how we wanted the business to grow.
“Creating stronger relations with our supply chain
partners through Kömmerling At Home and being
able to provide an avenue where we sell UK
designed products, such as WarmCore, globally
will bring fantastic benefits.”
Building Regulations
MASTERING THE ART OF COMPLIANCE
AluFoldDirect’s Commercial Director Rhodri John says homeowner demand for energy
efficiency has surpassed building regulations. Here’s how installers can satisfy both..
In the constantly evolving landscape of building
regulations and the Future Homes Standard,
installers are navigating the terrain between
compliance and homeowner demand.
The latest consultation period for Part L building
regulations suggests the 1.2 W/m²k U-value
requirement may remain in place for new-build
markets and 1.4 W/m²k for refurbishment, rather
than pushing for performance to reach 0.8 W/
m²k and 1.2 W/m²k respectively. But what is
also apparent from the consultation is that it will
become more difficult to achieve 1.2 W/m²k, as
the methods to comply become more onerous.
AluFoldDirect launched its Solution Series of toplevel
energy efficient aluminium windows and doors
in response to the uncertainty, pioneered by its
A-Bifold, A-Slider and A-Window products at every
thermal requirement, aiming to simplify the selection
process for both customers and consumers.
The transition towards more energy efficient and
sustainable buildings is not just a regulatory
requirement, but a necessity for environmental
conservation and reduced energy costs.
Understanding the requirements
Key to adapting to these changes is a thorough
understanding of the current Part L building
regulations and anticipating the requirements of the
Future Homes Standard. Installers must familiarise
themselves with the current requirements: 1.4 W/
m²k for refurbishments, 1.2 W/m²k for new builds
and 0.8 W/m²k for homes aiming to meet or exceed
passive standards. This knowledge forms the
foundation of planning and executing projects that
are not only compliant, but future-proofed against
forthcoming regulatory shifts.
Product selection
Choosing the right product is critical in meeting
and exceeding these standards. The AluFoldDirect
Solution Series exemplifies the type of products
designed to meet specific project needs while
ensuring compliance with current and foreseeable
regulations. This approach aligns product
Rhodri John
“Even the best products can fall short if
not installed correctly”
capabilities with project requirements, optimising
energy efficiency and performance.
Thermal performance as a priority
The emphasis on thermal performance cannot
be overstated. For projects aimed at surpassing
the minimum standards, options like the A-Bifold
system offer versatility across various solutions
by merely altering the glass specifications rather
than the system itself. This adaptability is crucial
in achieving superior energy efficiency and thermal
performance, complying with or even exceeding
Part L requirements today and preparing for Future
Homes Standard advancements.
The importance of installation
Even the best products can fall short if not
installed correctly. Attention to detail in sealing
and avoiding thermal bridging is essential for the
installation process. Proper installation ensures
that the products perform as intended, preventing
heat loss, and guaranteeing that the building’s
envelope remains energy efficient.
Staying informed
The landscape of building and refurbishment
is dynamic, with regulations and standards
periodically updated. Staying informed about the
latest developments in Part L building regulations
and other relevant standards is crucial.
Continuous education enables installers to ensure
their practices are not only compliant, but also
embody the cutting-edge of energy efficiency and
sustainability.
Navigating the uncertainties surrounding the
Future Homes Standard requires a proactive
and informed approach. By understanding the
requirements, selecting the right products,
focusing on thermal performance, ensuring
meticulous installation, and staying updated on
regulatory changes, installers can confidently
guide their projects towards compliance and
sustainability. This not only secures the present,
but also paves the way for a future where
buildings contribute positively to environmental
conservation and energy efficiency.
Installers can learn how to navigate building
regulations and see the Solution Series of
Despite only being released on the app stores in late October 2023, the Business Pilot development team has
already released a number of updates, adding extra features and functionality in response to customer feedback.
Business Pilot customer Rakeem Porter-Young, Director of Signature Home Improvements in Chichester,
described the app as “a super impressive piece of development”, while Jon Dennis, Director at Sureseal Windows
in Carmarthenshire, said: “The new improved one blows the old one out of the water!” www.businesspilot.co.uk
“Window Widgets’ development of a diverse range of baypoles ensures that the fenestration industry
TOP INTEGRAL BLIND COLOURS OF 2023 REVEALED
The UK’s largest manufacturer of bespoke ScreenLine integral blinds has revealed anthracite as 2023’s
most popular customer colour choice for Venetian blinds, narrowly pipping white to the post.
Anthracite accounted for 34.5% of all sales of Venetian Uni-Blinds from Morley Glass, with white coming a
close second at 32.4%. However, the sales data does suggest the arrival of a ‘new kid on the block’ – black.
In 2023 a new black (B160) Venetian blind was introduced to the ScreenLine range, with Morley reporting
that this colour appears to have ‘captured the imagination of property owners’, already accounting for nearly
6% of all sales. Grey and silver blinds are also still highly popular, with standard silver (S157) taking third
spot with nearly 1 in 10 of Venetian integral blind sales, and light grey (S155) seeing similar volumes to
black. www.morleyglass.co.uk/available-colours
'TAKE CONTROL' OF ARCHED FRAME QUOTES
Arched and angled frame manufacturer, Premier Arches, has updated its online pricing and ordering
platform to allow customers to add their own logo and selling price to quotations for a more personal and
professional customer experience.
Through the platform, fabricators, installers and trade counters are able to price and order complex arched and
angled frames in a wide range of profile systems in a matter of seconds. They are also able to save their quotes and
view their orders through a unique portal on the Premier Arches website, taking full control of their ordering process.
The latest update also allows users to personalise their quotes by adding in their own logo, selling price, colour
scheme and quote footers, helping them deliver a more professional final document to their retail or trade customers.
Louvres
SECURE VENTILATION
John Park-Davies, Group Managing Director, IKON Aluminium Systems, details the
benefits of adding aluminium louvre doorsets to your portfolio.
With commercial contractors seeking highperformance
products from reputable
and knowledgeable suppliers, installers
working in this market must be mindful of the
requirements and ensure their portfolio meets
these demands, offering a comprehensive range of
certified and proven fenestration products.
One product type which is often overlooked
is louvres. Aluminium louvred products are
fundamental for social housing, education,
healthcare, and student accommodation projects.
The type of louvre is determined by the application
and a variety of factors. For external use this
includes location, exposure, site orientation,
prevailing wind and potential of wind-driven rain.
To meet the demands of modern specifiers and
contractors, louvres must also carry appropriate
certification backed by independent, third-party
testing to meet specification requirements. As
one of the country’s foremost louvre suppliers we
work hard to ensure our products achieve these
standards.
PAS 24 aluminium louvre doorsets
Our outward-opening single and double aluminium
louvre doorsets have recently passed the latest
PAS 24 testing regime. Both were independently
tested against Annex A: Security hardware and
cylinder test and assessment, and Annex B:
Enhanced security performance for doorsets.
PAS 24 is the standard associated with enhanced
security for windows and doorsets. Referenced
in Approved Document Q it can help users meet
building regulations in England and Wales.
We have a suite of PAS 24 approved louvred
products allowing us to meet the demands of
both commercial and domestic projects. Our
range includes the IKL50 PAS 24 fully welded
aluminium security louvre system and IKL50 PAS
24 outward-opening single and double aluminium
louvre doorsets. We believe we are the only
John Park-Davies
“While louvres may not
be an everyday sell, they
are a valuable addition
to any portfolio”
UK manufacturer to successfully achieve PAS
24:2016 certification on all these products.
Security and ventilation combined
Unlike standard doorsets, such as composite and
timber entrance doors, our PAS 24 aluminium
louvred doorsets combine security with
ventilation. They allow air to pass across and
through the louvres into and out of the space beyond.
This means our louvred doorsets are particularly
suited to applications which require both
ventilation and security. They are frequently
used in more commercial applications such as
pedestrian access to underground car parks,
access to a computer server, plant or generator
room, or for the secure storage of high value
goods, with airflow.
They also meet several requirements for social
housing providers. Locations like refuse areas
and bike stores often need to be secure yet
provide good airflow. Bin stores, for example,
can be particularly vulnerable to rough sleeping
and may be susceptible to drug misuse. Our
doorsets help to discourage crime and anti-social
behaviour such as this.
For ease of installation and design flexibility, both
doorsets can be integrated into a façade. Single
or double skin insulating blanking panels can
also be fitted. We also recommend that our IKL50
PAS 24 fully-welded aluminium security louvre
system be used as a fixed, top, or side screen to
complement the PAS 24 door systems. It performs
strongly as a standalone product too and can be
glazed-in or fixed between structures.
Working with our sister company, Vertik-Al, we offer
any standard RAL or BS coloured powder-coated
finish on all our aluminium louvred products.
Made in Britain
In gaining PAS 24 certification, we ensure our
customers can access the very best and most
secure aluminium louvred products on the market. In
addition to the unique nature of these security
products, we are proud to say the components are
locally sourced, and then fabricated and powdercoated
in the heart of Britain.
While louvres may not be an everyday sell for
most installers, they are a valuable addition to any
portfolio. They present new opportunities and can
help cement relationships as clients appreciate the
ease of dealing with one trusted supplier.
Contract The Kubu Talk Column
HOW SECURE ARE YOU?
Kubu’s Ryan Bromley looks at ‘safeguarding the business you are building,
as well as the home that you work on’, within the smart security landscape...
In the rapidly evolving sector of smart security
and fenestration within the UK, there’s
loads of discussion around safeguarding the
homeowner’s domain with the latest and greatest
in smart technology.
However, among this buzz, there’s a crucial
conversation that’s perhaps not given its due
spotlight – how about the security of your
business operations?
Yes, you, the Installers; the skilled tradespeople
who are the real movers and shakers in bringing
these technologies from concept to reality in
homes across the nation.
It’s essential to question, beyond the homeowner’s
peace of mind, how are we ensuring that your
business is fortified against the challenges and
complexities of today’s market?
Enter Kubu, well known for enhancing home
security with its smart solutions, but equally
significant is its commitment to safeguarding the
businesses that deploy these solutions.
Kubu is not just about offering a smart security
feature for the end-user; it’s about providing a
comprehensive package that encompasses the
needs and concerns of the businesses that make
these installations possible.
Non-compliance = no sales
Following the introduction of the UK government’s
Product Security and Telecommunications
Infrastructure (PSTI) legislation which comes into
force on April 29th this year, the imperative for
compliance has never been more important.
Non-compliance means no sales. It’s as simple
and blunt as that.
Kubu not only meets these standards but exceeds
them, and sets a benchmark for the industry.
Our commitment to adhering to these regulations
ensures that when you choose Kubu, you’re not
just compliant with current standards but are
“As a professional
installer, your role in
the smart security
landscape is invaluable,
and your influence
will only grow”
aligned with a partner who is at the forefront
of legislative adherence. This commitment to
compliance is not just about staying operational;
it’s about instilling confidence in your customers
that the products you’re installing are recognised
for their security and reliability.
Credentials like the Secured by Design Secure
Connected Device Accreditation, the IASME Level
2 IoT accreditation, and full compliance with all
13 requirements of the universally revered ETSI
standards, allow Kubu to be fitted as a part of a
PAS24 accredited BSI Kitemarked door or window.
A true testament to Kubu’s unwavering dedication
to delivering products that meet the highest
standards of security and reliability.
For installers, this means that the products you
are fitting are among the best protected and most
respected in the market.
Customer service excellence is another pillar of what
Kubu is about. With a stellar Trustpilot rating (100%
5-star reviews) reflecting our commitment to going
above and beyond for both our business partners
and the end-user, Kubu isn’t just about flogging a
product. It’s about delivering an experience that’s
both seamless and supportive. This dedication to
service ensures that when you partner with Kubu,
you’re supported every step of the way.
Patents play a pivotal role in this equation. Kubu’s
portfolio of patented technologies is not merely a
testament to innovation but a defensive barrier
that secures your business against the tide of
imitations. Our patents ensure that the value
you bring to your customers remains unique and
competitive, safeguarding your business model
against potential undercutting by similar products.
Kubu’s distinction in the market also comes
from its vertically integrated business model,
with a pedigree of producing a million plus smart
sensors every single month, for some of the
biggest brands around.
Commitment to excellence
This integrated approach allows for complete
quality control and ensures that every product
installed in a customer’s home is of the highest
standard. This commitment to excellence and
control over the production process reassures
installers that they’re not just fitting some
imported and re-branded product, but are part of
a quality-driven supply chain.
As a professional installer, your role in the smart
security landscape is invaluable, and your
influence will only grow.
Kubu recognises this and extends beyond
providing security solutions for homeowners,
to ensuring that your business is equipped,
protected, and prepared to navigate the
complexities of the modern market.
With Kubu, you gain more than a product; you gain
a partner dedicated to safeguarding both the homes
you work on and the business you’re building.
Software
REVOLUTIONISING THE INDUSTRY
In the fast-paced world of double glazing, efficient management is essential for success.
Meet Glazepoint – ‘an innovative software solution, meticulously crafted
to streamline the daily operations of your installation company’.
With years of firsthand experience in
the glazing industry, Danny Graham
recognised the pressing need for
a comprehensive software solution tailored
specifically to the unique demands of the trade.
Despite exploring various options available in the
market, none seemed to align perfectly with his
vision for optimising workflow efficiency.
Driven by a passion for innovation and a
relentless pursuit of excellence, Danny teamed
up with his software developer friend, Darren
James. Together, they embarked on an ambitious
journey to create Glazepoint – the industry’s first
all-in-one software solution designed to address
the intricate needs of installation companies like
never before.
Glazepoint is more than just software; it’s a
game-changer. With intuitive features and robust
functionality, Glazepoint empowers businesses
to streamline processes, enhance productivity,
and elevate customer satisfaction. From project
management to resource allocation, Glazepoint
revolutionises every aspect of your operations,
ensuring seamless execution and unparalleled
efficiency.
We asked Danny Graham a few questions about
Glazepoint Software
Q: What inspired you to make Glazepoint
software?
A: My inspiration for creating Glazepoint stemmed
from my experience working within a busy double
glazing installation company. In our day-today
operations, we relied on various software
tools for different tasks, but none of them were
interconnected. As I explored the software
options available in the market tailored for our
industry, I soon realised that none provided the
comprehensive solution I envisioned. With a
clear understanding of the challenges, we faced
and a vision for what could truly streamline our
processes, I knew there was an opportunity to
innovate. This realisation sparked a conversation
with a close friend who happened to be a seasoned
software developer. Together, we seized the
opportunity to create our own solution – Glazepoint.
Q: What sets Glazepoint apart from other
software options?
A: Glazepoint serves as an all-in-one solution,
seamlessly managing a wide array of tasks
essential to the industry’s operations.
One distinguishing feature of Glazepoint is its
unique ability to create estimates that incorporate
product images and specifications. Furthermore,
Glazepoint integrates this feature seamlessly
with the other features, providing a cohesive
experience that streamlines workflow efficiency.
Drawing upon my industry knowledge, I
spearheaded the development of a window
designer within Glazepoint, catering to various
products and profile manufacturers. This tool
allows our customers to send professional
documents to their clients, showing the styles
and specifications. Our platform offers the
convenience of digital signatures, allowing
customers to sign off on proposals electronically,
expediting the approval process.
Q: What does the future hold for Glazepoint?
A: My vision for the future of Glazepoint is
ambitious yet straightforward: to become a
household name in the double glazing installation
business. We are committed to achieving this
goal by consistently improving our software and
listening closely to our customers for ideas that
will enhance our system.
One of our key advantages lies in having our main
software developer as a business owner. This
unique set-up allows us to swiftly implement
customer suggestions and updates, ensuring that
Glazepoint remains at the forefront of innovation
in the industry. Darren, our dedicated developer,
is tirelessly focused and works around the clock
to make Glazepoint the best option available.
While I cannot reveal all the details just yet, I can
assure you that we have a plethora of exciting
updates in the pipeline. These enhancements are
designed to elevate Glazepoint to new heights
and provide even greater value to our users. Rest
assured, there are plenty of reasons to keep an
eye on us in the near future.
Product Offering
KEEP ON KEEPING UP
Emma Fowlds, Junior Marketing Manager, Distinction Doors, explains why offering the
right products is key to meeting modern homeowner demands.
There’s still a squeeze on cash but those who
can afford to improve their homes are also
choosing to invest. They are using savings
and disposable income to purchase high-quality
products, fixtures and fittings which deliver
instant satisfaction and long-term reward.
This is certainly our experience as the UK’s leading
supplier of GRP composite entrance doors.
Meeting modern demands
Our doors are a premium product, they deliver
exceptional performance, comfort, and peace
of mind, and meet the demands of today’s
discerning homeowner.
Featuring a foam filled core, tests prove that a
Distinction door is 50% more thermally efficient
than a 48mm solid timber core composite door
and a 44mm traditional timber panellised door.
The difference is instantly noticeable when
replacing a PVC door with a composite door too.
“There’s still a squeeze on cash but those
who can afford to improve their homes
are also choosing to invest”
Emma Fowlds
This superior thermal performance means our
doors help homeowners cut their energy usage
and contribute towards a warmer, draught-free
home. In turn, this supports those with ambitions
to reduce their impact on the environment.
For homeowners choosing a glazed door style our
decorative glass is triple glazed and laminated as
standard, adding to the door’s thermal performance.
Safe and secure
Door security is something that many
homeowners may take for granted nowadays but
it is still worth highlighting as part of the sales
process, giving confidence and extra reassurance.
Our 44.5mm door blanks include a reinforced
central board, for example, which makes it both
solid and secure.
Many of our door styles are also Secured by
Design (SBD) accredited which supports our
SBD approved fabricators in manufacturing the
ultimate enhanced security doorset, helping to
keep residents safer in their homes and reduce
the likelihood of opportunist crime.
To achieve this prestigious status our 44.5mm
nxt-gen blank range and 44.5mm Signature blank
range have proven specification requirements to
meet the certification of PAS 24:2022.
Looking good
Of course, modern homeowners also want their
new entrance door to look good. Fortunately,
our composite doors balance performance with
striking aesthetics. We offer the biggest range of
door styles on the market. This is complemented
by our bespoke stocked decorative glass and
our inspirational colour palette. This means
our fabricators can supply installers and home
improvement companies with a solution for even
the most demanding of customers.
Our Signature and Contemporary door ranges
offer something to suit most tastes and property
styles, including glazed and unglazed designs.
Our nxt-gen range meanwhile offers a clean,
simple look with its flush-fitted beaded system
and moulding.
In recent years, shades of grey have dominated
our top-selling paints chart, but we also offer a
rainbow of rich, mellow, classic and contemporary
colours. Curated in-house, our colour palette
is updated regularly to maximise appeal. Our
doors are painted using non-toxic, odourless
and eco-friendly paints which require very little
maintenance – just wipe with warm, soapy water
and a clean, lint-free cloth.
Stay relevant
And so, with this month heralding the start of
Spring, home improvement jobs are likely to
move outdoors. With a cautious housing market,
this won’t just be about boosting kerb appeal,
homeowners will want to create a home to be
proud of, one which is both comfortable and
cost-effective to live in. It’s important, therefore,
that as an installer you have the products and
suppliers to meet these modern demands.
Composite Doors: Comment
While the phrase ‘make do and mend’
might be old fashioned, igniting images
of wartime wives stitching and patching
old clothes, the sentiment behind it has never
been more topical.
You can barely switch on the TV these days
without catching a show on repairing, renovating
or upcycling something or other, and doors are no
exception when it comes to this shift away from a
‘disposable mentality’.
RENOVATE VS REPLACE
Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead, discusses
the advantages of joining the renovation revolution...
Traditionally, when the majority of us had timber
front doors, it was a necessity to paint them every
few years, either to give them a refresh and cover
the wear and tear, or to opt for a new colour and
change the look of your home. It was unthinkable
to simply buy a new door, unless it was badly
damaged or rotting.
Since lockdown, the choice to renovate composite
doors rather than replace them has become a
rapidly growing market, with literally thousands
of Facebook advertisements for door and window
resprayers. You only have to take a look at the
Frenchic fan forum to see the vast number of
consumers looking to change the colour of their
composites. The cost of living crisis and high
interest rates, combined with increased costs for
replacement composite doors, is leading to more
and more homeowners choosing to renovate for a
home improvement quick-win – adding maximum
kerb appeal at a much lower cost.
Market size and development
Up to three million composite doors in the UK
are now more than five years old, and with
approximately 600,000 being installed each
year, we’re already well into the replacement of
replacements phase – composite doors being
replaced with new composite doors. Most of the
doors that are being replaced are still mechanically
sound. This means that there’s many potential
sales being lost to the renovation market – a
conservative estimate of 1,000 to 1,500 per week.
The market in the US and Canada is already
well established and ten years ahead of ours.
Repainting GRP and steel doors is the norm over
there, as is replacing and upgrading glass options
to refresh the look of a door. Home Depot, their
equivalent of B&Q, has whole areas dedicated to
refurbing doors with glass and colour displays.
An old composite door is transformed: before (above left)... and transformed to this (above right)
I feel we are some way off this in the UK, but that
is starting to change. Training academies have
now been established on our shores, initially
attracting decorators before a multitude of other
tradespeople got involved.
However, there’s a surprisingly low amount
of window fitters that have yet grasped the
opportunity. This market is here to stay and will
only get bigger and bigger, and glazing installers
are quite possibly the best suited professionals
to carry out these painting renovations. With
years of experience in removing sashes, handles,
hardware, and rehanging the door, it’s really a no
brainer for fitters to jump on the bandwagon.
As well as changing the colour of a door, the
other biggest aesthetic alteration you can make
is replacing the glass. Just like colour, tastes in
glass change over the years, and it’s relatively
easy for a seasoned installer to switch it out. This
could also improve the thermal performance of
an older door. You could even offer new hardware
and door furniture as additional options to
complete a transformation.
Training and marketing support
While we are still as fully committed as ever to the
new composite door installation market, it would be
remiss of us to ignore this growing requirement for
renovation and we are ideally placed to work with
installers to develop those sales.
Through our ColorSpray Network and in
association with Abode Academy, one of the
leading training providers for sprayers and
decorators, we run a range of courses at our
training centre on applications of coatings, both
in booth and on-site, to ensure installers have all
the skills to offer this service.
We also provide full training on reglazing and offer
a wide range of marketing support to help promote
this aspect of a business, including RAL and door
visualisers, brochures, swatches, glass packs,
and showroom displays. By being able to offer to
renovate a composite door instead of, or as well
as, replacing it, not only will you be able to make
a similar amount of money on the job, you’ll get
the chance to sell other products on the project –
making a spray day into a profitable pay day.
'USE OUR GOOD REVIEWS TO SELL' SAYS ENDURANCE
With the home improvement sector continuing to experience challenging trading conditions, Endurance
Doors is highlighting the power of online reviews in converting leads into ‘actual orders’ for installers.
Endurance Doors has more than 2,300 independent consumer reviews on Trustpilot, of which more than 87%
award the manufacturer the maximum five out of five stars.
Scott Foster, Sales and Marketing Director, Endurance Doors said: “Endurance Doors, in close collaboration with
our network of professional installer partners, has gone to great lengths to develop an online reputation that can
facilitate sales... The positive online reputation enjoyed by Endurance Doors has not happened by chance... it’s part
of a wider and concerted effort to get closer to consumers and to help our installers sell. It’s been said that a good
reputation is the most powerful form of advertising – and we’re inclined to agree.” www.endurancedoors.co.uk
UAP EXPANDS SLIM PULL HANDLE RANGE
UAP is bolstering its range of slim pull handles with new colour options for residential and commercial properties.
The first to launch is the Black Pull Handle. Made from marine-grade stainless steel and finished with a black powder coating, the
handle provides a contemporary appearance and exceptional durability. A further two handles are currently in development offering
the same qualities with either a granite or rose gold finish.
To enhance aesthetics, all slim handles in the range feature 32mm diameter bars, are available with matching accessories, and
can be paired with complementary hardware, including the Fullex Flexi Lock.
Each pull handle has two fixing points with an individual plate on each and comes with an Allen key and two Allen bolts on the
upstands. To maximise flexibility, three methods can be used for installation – hidden fixings, bolt through and back to back. These
options also mean the door can be sent to site without the pull handle, preventing the risk of any damage in transit.
HURST'S BOLD INVESTMENT IN COLOUR CHOICE
Hurst says it is helping its customers meet the increased homeowner-demand for colour by investing in a new stateof-the-art
paint shop at its site in Hull.
The new £200k dedicated paint facility comprises of Downdraft preparation bench, bunded paint mixing room, fully enclosed
spray shop with forced air input system, dedicated ATEX-rated flash-off area, and a Schubox Catalytic IR drying system.
The new paint facility will give the door supplier greater control over the manufacturing process, while minimising error and
reducing lead times in the process.
Hurst surveyed its customer base at the start of 2024 to learn more about how the latest trends among door specifiers and homeowners were feeding
through to supply and installation. It found that 62% of respondents consider the appearance and design of the door to be the most important factor in
selling entrance doors. It also found that four in five respondents had seen an increase in demand for bespoke colours. www.hurstdoors.co.uk
FIT IT FAST WITH ALUK'S QUIK CLIP BEAD FOR BI-FOLDS
AluK says fabricators and installers have yet another reason to choose its ‘tested, tried and trusted’
BSF70 bi-fold, with the launch of a brand new clip-in bead option.
AluK says its new Quik Clip bead takes just seconds to clip securely into place, with no need for force or
special tools, and it doesn’t impact on the sightlines of the door.
A key benefit in terms of installation is that Quik Clip works with a sliding gasket which can be fitted either
by the fabricator in the factory or the installer out on site. If the glass is out of tolerance, there is flexibility
to replace the sliding gasket with a standard wedge gasket, without needing to change the Quik Clip bead. It
clips out just as easily as it clips in and there is no risk of damage to the glass. Priced in line with the existing,
standard AluK bead, AluK says the new Quik Clip bead represents ‘value for money, with no compromise on
quality or performance’. Visit glaze-tube.co.uk/aluk-quik-clip/ for a demo video. uk.aluk.com
Distinction Doors reports that 2023 was ‘the best year yet’ for its nxt-gen door range, with
Installer Insights
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
Steven Sanderson, Director at Chesterfield-based installer and Certass member, Sereco
Windows, explains why he’s prepared to pay over the odds for good fitters and laments
the impact of low-price, low-quality rivals on the wider industry...
Total Installer (TI): In a nutshell, who are
Sereco Windows and what do you offer?
Steven Sanderson (SS): Sereco Windows are a
Derbyshire-based business offering high quality
PVC-U windows, doors and conservatories as well
as aluminium. We are quite unique in the fact
that we also offer high-end timber products; rotresistant
Accoya, hardwood Sapele and Oak
windows doors and conservatories.
We operate within a 40-mile radius of
Chesterfield, going out as far as the outskirts of
Manchester, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield.
TI: What was your path into glazing?
SS: I am a qualified joiner by trade and at the
age of 18, I worked as a joiner with Chesterfield
Borough Council. I needed more income, so I
ended up working weekends, installing mainly
PVC-U windows to bring in the extra needed.
Gradually, the PVC-U installation work increased
until I eventually started my own window
installation company back in 2007.
Being a joiner by trade, it was also a natural
transition for me to bring the business into supplying
and installing high-end timber products. With less
competition in this field, the profit margins are so
much higher than with our PVC-U equivalents. We
do have to travel further for timber though, as
a lot of the work is in conservation areas, but
people are willing to pay a higher price.
TI: If you had one piece of advice about
starting a glazing installation business,
what would it be?
SS: Make sure you get excellent suppliers and superb
fitters. These two elements of the chain are crucially
important! We pay our fitters more than the going rate
as we really value their work and service. Another
piece of advice is to build your reviews big time
Steven Sanderson, Director, Sereco Windows
“We have to travel
further for timber but
people are willing to
pay a higher price”
so that people trust you and are willing to pay you
more for your products and services.
TI: Tell us about a recent project…
SS: We installed some beautiful Genesis vertical
sliders (timber alternative) into a local residential
property. We have managed to get these windows
passed by Local Planning as a more economical
version of the real timber products.
Even though this particular customer was not in
a conservation area and was not obliged to use
Genesis or timber doors, they appreciated the
unmatched beauty of our timber look-alike range
and our high-end Accoya timber doors – and
were willing to pay the high-end price. That is the
type of client we go after!
TI: What’s your most important tool?
SS: Each person in the business has their own
‘most important tool’. For me, as Director of the
business and the main sales and survey person,
it is my mobile showroom. For Elaine, my wife,
who runs the business behind the scenes and
does all the marketing, it is her Mac laptop, and
for the fitters it is their vans and tools!
TI: What’s the most frustrating thing about
your job?
SS: We have noticed more competition entering
the market and more one-man bands on the
road, which we feel is driving prices down in the
lower-end PVC-U market. Homeowners are often
tempted now to opt for the very cheapest and
think that all the products and the fitting service
are the same across the board!
Also [some of these installers] are not Certass or
Fensa approved, but many homeowners seem willing
to take these cheaper options despite the risks.
We have to really sell our difference more now –
and educate our prospects on the pitfalls to avoid.
We often get called-out to put jobs right where
they have been installed so badly by cheapskate
installers with cheaper products! However,
we appeal to a more discerning customer who
checks reviews.
I have been in the trade as an installer for around
40 years, so prospects often say that they feel
very confident and comfortable as I know what
I’m talking about and give solid and trustworthy
advice. Many newcomer installers have not got
the experience and the knowledge we have, but
it can really frustrate me when prospects try to
compare us to them!
TI: ... And the most satisfying thing about it?
SS: There is nothing more satisfying than when
you’ve been on a tricky and long installation and
you get a five-star review and lots of praise from
the customer about how amazing our fitters are
and how the job has been handled from start to
finish.
40 T I MARCH 2024 PRACTICAL CONTENT FOR THE GLAZING INSTALLER & HOME IMPROVEMENT SPECIALIST

Contract Talk
It is satisfying when they cannot believe the
service we have given and the quality of
installation they are left with. As a result, we
often get referred to neighbours and friends and
they won’t even look any further for other quotes
because they totally believe in you.
TI: What’s the biggest issue currently
affecting you as an installer?
SS: Luckily we undertake quite a lot of highend
timber installations where there is less
“We pay our fitters
more than the going
rate as we really value
their work and service”
competition and higher profits margins, but
as mentioned previously, more competition
entering the market and driving prices down [is
an issue].
Also, due to the cost of living crisis, we have had
to put our fitters’ wages up quite substantially.
We pay our fitters well, as they are the backbone
of our business and we are only as good as our
fitters.
This means our prices have also increased
substantially, especially when you add-on the
increased product costs as well.
So, again we have had to get better at selling our
difference and explaining why it is better to pay
the price once and not have any regrets!
TI: What are your main concerns and
hopes for the future of the fenestration
industry in 2024 and beyond?
SS: Even though we are now fully booked for quite
a few months into this year, it is an installer’s
dream to secure longer installation projects,
maybe one to two-weeks at a time, rather than
half days and one day installs. We are finding that
many homeowners are opting for maybe two to
three windows at a time now (smaller jobs), so
they can budget during this cost of living crisis.
Contract The View Talk from Certass TA
THE GLAZING INSTALLER'S CHAMPION
Jason Clemmit, MD at Certass, says Certass Trade Association is putting installers front
and centre in ‘the biggest year of change our industry will see in a generation’.
Glazing installers have faced numerous
challenges in the continually shifting
landscape of the UK market. From
economic pressures, difficult customers, poor
material supply to site and a lack of clarity on
regulatory changes that affect their future in 2024.
As the new regulators start enforcement activity
and there is a new building control regime in
April, the pressure due to potential liability will
further impact installers.
Recognising this issue and the growing
uncertainty has led Certass Trade Association
(Certass TA) to take a decisive step by realigning
its focus exclusively towards supporting the
interests of glazing installers.
With a distinguished legacy of advocacy, friendly
supportive customer service with swift response
times, knowledge dissemination and government
influence, Certass TA is uniquely positioned in our
industry to reinforce the knowledge foundation of
these businesses, and ensure installers’ interests
are represented at senior government level.
Bridging divergence
Certass has formed numerous connections for
its installers to benefit from and has a clear
history of delivery over recent years. Led by
Jon Vanstone since 2017, the association has
made significant strides in bridging the industryregulatory-government
divergence. Jon is wellknown
within Government and wider construction
as a recognised expert on competence, building
regulations and the future direction of travel.
Jon holds numerous positions, including Chair
of the Industry Competence Committee for the
Building Safety Regulator and the National Home
Improvement Council, as well as advisor to the
Construction Leadership Council.
Jon, supported by a senior team of knowledge
experts, has enabled Certass to focus on the
key discussions that really matter. Certass
has therefore been ahead of the game on the
changes to Part F (Ventilation) and Part L (Energy
Conservation), lobbying against the indiscriminate
implementation of trickle vents, and proving its
dedication to the industry’s best interests.
Its current activity surrounding product supply to
site, has led Certass to engage with many senior
figures, so that installers will not be left solely
carrying the proverbial can in the future. This is a
path that will lead to a fairer position in the future.
A year of change
For Certass, a renewed commitment to installers
is a priority refocus in the biggest year of change
our industry will see in a generation. Amidst a
landscape marked by economic uncertainty,
regulatory impact, enhanced competence
Jason Clemmit
“For Certass, a renewed
commitment to
installers is a priority
refocus in the biggest
year of change our
industry will see in a
generation”
requirements and challenging supplier relations,
Certass TA’s decision to refocus on installers
reflects a deep understanding of their unique
challenges. Certass is driven to ensure that despite
the challenges, installers survive and thrive.
By enhancing installer support and focusing on key
government representation, Certass TA’s vision
extends beyond just the immediate challenges to
the longer-term as well. The association plans to
introduce comprehensive support mechanisms,
including business development tools, educational
resources, and direct advocacy at government level
to address the specific concerns that affect the
installer’s livelihood.
Safeguarding installers’ interests
This vision includes enhancing the economic
resilience of installers, improving supplier
relations, and ensuring fair regulatory frameworks
throughout the built environment. By focusing on
these key areas, Certass TA intends to safeguard
the interests of installers, promoting a healthier,
more sustainable industry.
Certass connection web runs to many areas
of benefit for our members and driven by a
collaborative approach, Certass TA is committed
to nurturing an environment where installers,
suppliers, and regulatory bodies work together
towards common goals. This collaborative
approach is essential for addressing longstanding
challenges and unlocking new
opportunities for growth, innovation, and overall
perception within the sector.
In summary, the strategic realignment of Certass
TA’s focus marks a new chapter in its mission to
support the domestic glazing installer. Under the
guidance of Jon Vanstone and with the collective
strength of its members, Certass TA is poised to
lead the way towards a brighter, more supportive
landscape for glazing installers.
Contract Taking Account Talk
THE UNSUNG HERO
Simon Jarman, CEO of Clever Bean Accounting, recognises the ‘often-overlooked’ but
crucial role of the bookkeeper when it comes to business success...
In business, there is an often-overlooked position
that plays a pivotal role in laying the foundation for
your success – the bookkeeper. Your bookkeeper
is undeniably one of the most important people
in your business, influencing everything from
financial accuracy to strategic planning.
One of my mantras is that if you don’t know your
numbers, you don’t know your business.
Producing relevant Management Information (MI)
on a regular basis allows you to understand how
your business is performing and lets you take
rapid corrective action if it is moving off track.
However, that MI is only helpful if it’s accurate
and if not, it’s likely to be misleading and lead to
poor decision-making.
It’s your bookkeeper’s responsibility to create
a robust platform for the production of that MI.
They must meticulously record every financial
transaction and this focus on detail forms the
bedrock of your financial accuracy, ensuring
that the numbers tell a reliable story of your
company’s financial health.
One key aspect is the categorisation of
transactions. So often, window businesses are
operating with a very limited chart of accounts
with, for example, just two account codes
utilised within the direct costs section – cost of
sales, and C.I.S. labour. This severely limits the
usefulness of the MI that can be produced. It is
vital that we collect a much greater level of data,
including creating the ability to split our costs by
product type (e.g. PVC windows, composite doors,
bi-folds etc.), the separation of our installation
costs into fitter fees, consumable materials,
vehicle costs, access equipment, survey costs,
service engineer costs, and sales commissions.
Right now, in many cases these costs are just
coded to two account lines which gives us very
little to work with.
In order to create this level of detail, the bookkeeper
must have a very good understanding of the
Simon Jarman
business and be able to interpret sales and purchase
invoices, analyse them into their various categories
and code them to the accounts accordingly.
When the books are kept in good order, the
process of producing financial reports becomes
seamless. Management accounts, budgets, and
forecasts can be extracted directly from the
accounting system, reducing the risk of errors
and saving time in the reporting process.
Regulatory compliance
Beyond the visible benefits, accurate bookkeeping
is clearly fundamental for regulatory compliance.
The bookkeeper ensures that financial
transactions are recorded in accordance with
accounting standards and tax regulations which
avoids legal issues.
With all this in mind, how important is it that your
bookkeeper is competent and capable?
The answer is obvious – it is, of course, critical.
But, in many small businesses, individuals
entrusted with this role often lack formal training
in bookkeeping or accountancy. This poses a
challenge because it significantly increases the
risk of error.
Without formal training, these individuals may
inadvertently miss the wood for the trees. There
is a tendency for the bookkeeping approach to be
very transactional – what I mean by this is that
transactions are processed into the accounting
system parrot fashion without any sense check
as to whether the accounting records as a whole
still make sense. I have seen numerous situations
where a bookkeeper diligently processes
transaction after transaction – incorrectly –
resulting in accounts that are moving further and
further away from being useful or compliant.
This issue is compounded by the fact that the
majority of businesses in this industry are too
small to require formal audit, falling below the
threshold. As a result, there is very often no
regular review of the accuracy of the accounting
records. One reasonably might expect this
exercise would be carried out by the company’s
external accountants prior to preparing the year
end accounts, but sadly this is often not the case.
It is just trusted that the internal records are
correct, and filings are made erroneously.
It’s vital that your balance sheet is regularly
reviewed to ensure the accuracy of your accounts.
Failure to do this exposes the business to the risk
of undetected errors or discrepancies that could
have significant ramifications for decision-making.
A well-trained bookkeeper can significantly assist
with this, regularly reconciling your balances to
third-party evidence such as supplier statements
or the records held by HMRC.
In summary, by investing in skilled bookkeeping
professionals, businesses can enhance the
accuracy of their financial records, gain a holistic
view of their financial health, and make wellinformed
decisions based on reliable data. The
bookkeeper, when armed with professionalism
and training, becomes an absolute necessity for
the success of your business.
RAISING THE ROOF
Laura Cort, Business Development Manager at conservatory roof and lantern supplier,
SupaLite, talks products, tech support, industry challenges and more, with Total Installer...
Total Installer (TI): Tell us a bit about SupaLite
Laura Cort (LC): SupaLite is renowned for its
SupaLite Tiled Roof System, introduced to the UK
market in 2012. This remarkable system provides
installers with a lightweight, easy-to-install and
desirable solid roof which fits onto both existing
conservatory window frame and new-build
projects, eliminating the dramatic changes in
temperature seen in traditional conservatories.
Today, SupaLite prides itself on manufacturing a
comprehensive range of top-quality conservatory
roof products and providing superior customer
service. Our offerings include a full range of
conservatory roof solutions, including an orangery
flat roof, roof lanterns, glass roofs, catering to the
varying needs of installers.
TI: What are the benefits of the SupaLite Tiled
Roof System for homeowners?
LC: Most notably, it significantly improves the
thermal performance of conservatories, making
them usable all year round. The system also
transforms conservatories into functional living
spaces, enhancing both the aesthetics and the
insulation of the structure.
TI: And what are the benefits for installers?
LC: For installers, the SupaLite Tiled Roof System
The SupaLite Tiled Roof System
offers ease of installation and a comprehensive
range of products to meet consumer demands.
SupaLite’s focus on innovation and quality,
combined with support in marketing and
technical areas, makes our products appealing
and ensures our customers are supported through
the entire process.
The system’s design simplifies the installation
process, allowing for quicker completion times
and potentially higher profit margins. SupaLite’s
TI: What are the key considerations for
installers when replacing a conservatory roof
with the SupaLite Tiled Roof System?
LC: Key considerations for installers include
ensuring the existing structure can support
the new roof system, understanding local
building regulations, and managing homeowner
expectations regarding the transformation
process and outcomes.
Potential stumbling blocks could involve technical
challenges related to integrating the new roof with
the existing conservatory framework, navigating
building regulations, as well as competing with
cheaper timber systems and clad overs.
TI: Besides the SupaLite Tiled Roof System,
what other products do you offer?
TI: Tell us more about the S1 and the S2...
LC: The S1 Roof Lantern stands out due to its
stylish, secure, and sustainable design, featuring
innovative construction that addresses common
security weaknesses found in other lantern
systems. It offers superior thermal performance
through Thermlock multi-chamber technology and
high-performance glazing.
The S2 Conservatory Roof has been developed
over three years of extensive research, with
glass and polycarbonate options available. It
distinguishes itself with enhanced ventilation,
improved modern aesthetics with a unique
square top cap, low-line appearance, providing
an upgraded conservatory experience.
TI: What are some of the key considerations
when specifying and installing large
conservatory roofs and roof lanterns?
LC: Ensuring structural integrity, optimising
thermal performance, and achieving the desired
aesthetic outcome are all key considerations.
It’s crucial to consider the roof’s weight, the
potential need for additional support structures,
and how the installation will integrate with
existing architectural elements.
Installers should also be mindful of the glazing
options to maximise energy efficiency and light
transmission while minimising heat loss and gain.
TI: What’s the largest conservatory roof and
roof lantern you’ve supplied?
LC: We ensure we supply our customers with
everything they need to complete an installation, and
some of these projects can be big! The largest ILite
roof we have supplied was a huge 11m x 5.9m; the
largest S1 Lantern was 6m x 3.2m; the largest S2
glass roof was 7.3m x 4m and the largest SupaLite
Tiled Roof supplied was 12m x 10m.
TI: What technical support do you offer?
LC: SupaLite offers comprehensive technical
support to installers, including on-hand technical
assistance from in-house technical experts to
address any questions or challenges encountered
on-site. Our technical team is readily available to
provide guidance, whether through direct phone
consultations or by sending necessary technical
information via email. We provide free installer
training at our showroom for our customers,
on both installation of our products and sales
training for their sales representatives.
TI: How are you finding market conditions?
LC: The current market conditions for the
conservatory and roofing industry are reflective
of extensive economic challenges. The UK is
still navigating the aftermath of the pandemic,
with the economy significantly impacted and the
country facing a cost of living crisis.
This suggests a cautious but opportunistic
landscape for businesses in the conservatory roof
and lantern market, as homeowners look for cost
effective, energy efficient home improvements.
We have noticed Q1 has been a great start to the
year for SupaLite with a promising view ahead
looking forward to Q2.
TI: What’s the biggest challenge currently
facing your installer customers?
LC: The biggest challenge currently facing
installer customers is the economic impact
of rising energy bills and the cost of living
increase. This has led to homeowners
becoming more cautious with their expenses,
impacting businesses as the demand for home
improvements decrease.
Installers are therefore challenged to find ways to
generate a steady stream of business to remain
competitive and viable. SupaLite understands
these challenges and aims to support installers
through initiatives like exclusive installer
schemes, instilling confidence for homeowners
looking to invest in one of our products.
TI: What’s next for SupaLite?
LC: 2024 is the year SupaLite launch their brand
new Double SkyVista; a unique and cost-effective
design set to revolutionise the market.
We are hosting more exciting events this year,
including the Piggyback Events, in conjunction
with People in Glazing Society (PiGs). This is a
fantastic opportunity for installers to network with
people from the fenestration industry. Our SupaLite
Support Vehicle is touring the country attending
open days and supporting our trade counter
customers.
At SupaLite we’re continuously finding innovative
ways to improve our products to help our installers
Updates
Sheerline’s SheerVent roof vent is now exclusively available for S2 conservatory roofs,
alongside the company’s award-winning S1 lantern.
With a ‘stylish’ ventilation option that integrates properly with the rest of the roof aesthetic,
Sheerline says SheerVent is ‘the perfect solution’ to the long-standing challenge of adding
reliable ventilation to glazed roofs without creating weaknesses for water ingress.
It does this through an integrated muntin bar, and fitting directly into the ridge baffle, thus
eliminating the possibility of leaks. In addition, it offers thermal efficiency as it is fully thermallybroken
using high-performance 24mm glazing, ideal for keeping conservatories warmer in
winter and cooler in summer. The system also utilises discreet light, wind and rain sensors for
‘comfort, additional convenience and peace of mind’. info@sheerline.com
RESIDENTIAL CURTAIN WALLING TREND
Fentrade Aluminium has reported the growing popularity of low-rise curtain walling being installed into
residential properties.
Whilst curtain walling is often the fabric of choice for commercial applications, Chris Reeks, Managing Director
at Fentrade, is keen to point out that the product’s flexibility is proving popular when it comes to domestic
properties too.
He said: “Over the past few months, we have worked with our trade customers on several new-build and
refurbishment projects to open up entrances and hallways to create additional space and light for the homeowner.
By incorporating our low-rise curtain walling into these domestic projects, we have created light-filled and
visually striking spaces.” fentradealuminium.co.uk
SPECTRA ADDS LEKA ROOF SYSTEMS TO ITS RANGE
South West trade fabricator, Spectra Conservatory Roofs, recently added the complete Leka Systems range to
its portfolio, in ‘a strategic move that is already yielding impressive results’ for the Devon-based business.
MD of Spectra Conservatory Roofs, Darren Goddard, said: “The Leka Warm Roof and the Leka Orangery Roof
perfectly align with our wider conservatory roof offer giving our customers a competitive advantage. And the Leka Xi
modular system gives us an opportunity to grow our value proposition and secure new opportunities.
“We’re seeing a very strong sales closure rate for Leka products with an impressive 90% of quoted business
successfully secured, which shows the strength of its product offering.”
To introduce the Leka range, Spectra took 18 of its customers to Leka’s show site and training centre at the National
Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon, securing sales of several roofs whilst there. www.lekasystems.co.uk
MODPLAN REPORTS CONTINUED DEMAND FOR COLOUR
Trade fabricator Modplan has reported continued growth for coloured products across its window,
door and conservatory roof offering.
Heidi Sachs, Managing Director at Modplan, said: “Our continued growth in coloured products
Business Advice
TUNE IN FOR BUSINESS SUPPORT
Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme Chief Executive, Faisal Hussain,
tells installers what they can expect from the organisation’s latest podcast series, aimed
at providing valuable business information and support.
Following on from the successful mental
health podcasts from the Double Glazing and
Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS),
published in October 2023 alongside the National
Home Improvement Council (NHIC), the new series
focuses on offering practical advice on how to run a
business more effectively and efficiently.
DGCOS already has a comprehensive package of
installer benefits in place for members in all areas
of business management, but it seemed to me that
a much wider audience might also be interested in
this type of help and advice. From our insight into
the mental health and wellness arena, it’s clear
that the pressures of running a business contribute
towards mental health problems. From those initial
findings, we have developed this new podcast
series with the aim of boosting business knowledge
and practices, with the aim of taking pressures off
installer companies.
Navigating daily challenges
Working with Anna Scothern, Chief Executive
of NHIC, as host, we have identified key areas
in which installers may need extra business
support. There are many installers who are
experts in the latest door and window products
and developments, but who sometimes struggle
with certain aspects of running a business. After
all, we can’t all be experts in everything, and this
is where the new podcasts might help.
The series is divided into clearly defined topics:
collaboration, sales and marketing (in association
with HIES Consumer Code), grants and incentives
(in association with HIES), legal, financial
management, and operations. Each podcast brings
in industry experts who discuss issues that affect all
businesses, and we would encourage all installers to
have a listen and hopefully get some useful advice.
Running a business can be stressful, and at a time
when the economic situation is still challenging, we
hope that this series will provide useful tips and
advice to reduce some of that pressure and give
more confidence to business owners.
Gaining knowledge, simplifying processes
For example, managing cash flow is such an
important part of managing any business. Payments
can be unpredictable, the cost of materials and
therefore products have gone up, so it can be hard
to stay on top of financial issues. Budgeting, pricing,
and planning are key points that are discussed in
that podcast.
Legal issues are also something that installers must
deal with in their working lives. Staying on top of
compliance, legal requirements and regulations is
key to avoiding serious problems further down the
line, so the legal podcast is going to be invaluable.
We also do not overlook the importance of the
supply chain relationships and networking in our
Collaboration podcast, or how to best employ sales
and marketing strategies and tactics to help with
lead generation, brand building, buying effectively
and how best to forward plan. This information will
be in the Sales and Marketing episode.
This is a series of useful advice which I would
urge anyone in the industry to listen to. Just a
short period of time invested in accessing the
podcasts could bring a variety of benefits.
At DGCOS we are able to provide support and help
via our podcast series and our installer benefits
package. Building a stronger, better industry, and
minimising the risk of mental health problems
are inter-related, and I believe that these are
important issues that we need to shine a light on
and help where we can.
I would like to thank Anna and all my industry
colleagues and other speakers who have
recognised the value of providing this level of
support. I think it demonstrates that there is a
gap in the market for specific business advice. I
am excited to hear what listeners think!
The series is due to launch in Spring 2024.
Article Loft Ladders
STEP-UP TO MORE SALES
Colin Wells, Head of Technical at Keylite Roof Windows, looks at how installers working on
home improvement projects can easily upsell by offering a range of compliant loft ladders,
taking insulation, U-values and industry standards into account.
From family heirlooms, furniture and clothing
to festive decorations – people look to their
loft to store some of their most important
possessions. However, many rarely venture
into their attic space due to difficulty in access.
That’s why loft ladders are the perfect solution
for making sure homeowners can keep storage
safe and within reach, while keeping other rooms
clutter-free.
Insulation and U-values are key
Given the recent spike in gas and electricity
rates, homeowners are increasingly and actively
prioritising the importance of well-insulated
products in all home renovation projects. In fact,
the integration of advanced insulation materials
and attention to sealing gaps has become
standard practice.
What some builders may not be aware of however,
is that the installation of an insulated loft hatch
and ladder is equally as important as the rest of
the loft. The colder air in an insulated loft can lead
to draughts through any gaps – most often found
around inadequately insulated loft hatches.
Loft ladders with high insulation can also prevent
heat loss and make sure the right areas in a
house are kept warm. For installers focused on
optimising energy efficiency, understanding the
capabilities of thermal insulation on loft ladders
is paramount.
The U-value, a measure of heat transfer through
the ladder hatch door, is a key metric. Installers
should prioritise loft ladders with a U-value of 1.1
W/m 2 K or less to ensure minimal heat loss.
Top tip: Beware of loft ladders claiming high
insulation without providing a U-value. You
can even verify the source of the value for
added credibility.
The installation of an insulated loft hatch and ladder
is equally as important as the rest of the loft
An airtight seal around the hatch ensures that
warm air is conserved within the living spaces.
Opting for loft ladders accredited with a Class 4
rating – the highest standard for air permeability
– gives builders a guarantee that they are
installing a tightly sealed hatch door, addressing
yet another crucial aspect of energy efficiency.
Meeting the standards
Most installers will already be well-versed
in industry standards, and compliance with
European Standard EN 14975 is a must. This
standard outlines specifications and testing
procedures for all types of loft ladders, such as
sliding, concertina, and folding models.
EN 14975 is not just a box to tick; the standard
ensures that loft ladders maintain minimum
standards of quality and safety, including the
ability to support a minimum load of 150kg, and
means builders can trust that their installations
are in line with industry benchmarks.
However, not all loft ladders adhere to the same
standards and compliance for these products
is not actually legally mandated. Despite this,
many specifiers will stipulate that loft ladders
should adhere to BS EN 14975, and to meet
the expectations of clients, installers should
fit loft ladders that meet or exceed each of the
aforementioned standards.
A compliant and easy-to-install solution
Builders, architects, construction professionals
and homeowners recognise now more than ever
the pivotal role that thermal efficiency plays in
the overall design and construction of homes.
Proper insulation not only helps in conserving
energy, but also contributes to substantial cost
savings on heating bills.
Keylite, with its commitment to thermal
insulation, airtightness and compliance with
industry standards, works with installers aiming
to create loft spaces that not only meet current
demands but also withstand the test of time.
What’s more, Keylite’s loft ladders have been
specially designed for ease of fitting; allowing
builders to streamline their processes and install
efficiently without compromising on quality. The
brand’s infamous pre-installed Flick-Fit brackets
allow installation from below the loft, and its
unique detachable ladder enables one-person
installation.
Keylite’s range of loft ladders have been designed
for fast and simple installation, to improve
efficiencies around heat loss and even to protect
in case of fire. For more information, visit: www.
peak, with unpredictability from suppliers
sometimes being the determining factor on whether
a project is profitable. Northern Building Plastics
(NBP) has taken a bold step to address this
challenge directly, with a commitment to consistent
pricing across all four of its Super Depots, located
in Birtley, Hinckley, Bolton and Leeds.
“We understand the frustration and the
unnecessary delays caused by fluctuating prices
in our industry, and that is the driving force
behind our guaranteed standard of transparency
and consistency across all Northern Building
Plastics depots,” explains Stephen Jones, Sales
Director at NBP.
He continues: “We know that if customers
purchase products at a higher price than what
was initially quoted or previously supplied, it has
a massive impact on their profit.
“Fluctuation in material costs can be the
difference between making money and
losing money on a job. By offering consistent
competitive prices across all our Super Depots,
we are providing our customers with peace of
mind, and they know exactly what to expect when
purchasing from any of our depots.”
In a market where supplier product prices can vary
from site to site, hour to hour, and staff member to
staff member, NBP’s commitment to a consistent
pricing structure underscores its dedication to not
just serving but also modernising the construction
supply landscape. “Competitive price consistency
means you don’t need to discount heavily, which is
why you won’t see knee-jerk flash sales from NBP,”
Steve adds.
NBP’s initiative to standardise prices across its
network of depots is more than just a strategic
move; it’s a testament to the company’s
commitment to fairness and customer
satisfaction. By ensuring consistent pricing, NBP
“If customers purchase products at
Stephen Jones
a higher price than they were initially
quoted, it has a massive impact on their profit”
is not only simplifying the buying process but also
fostering a relationship of trust with its clientele.
Steve explains: “We’ve been building competitive
price lists for different customer types like general
builders, joiners, and window installers into our
system to offer bespoke pricing packages.
“So, if you walk into NBP and tell me that you’re
a joiner or a window installer for example, then
we will tailor a pricing package to your account
in seconds – that way customers are getting
competitive pricing on the ranges that are
important to their specific trade,” he concludes.
Through the integration of competitive price lists
tailored to different customer segments, NBP
is not only alleviating customers’ frustrations,
but also pushing for a more transparent and
equitable construction supply chain, enhancing
the purchasing process and solidifying NBP’s
commitment to integrity and unity with its
customer base. Such an approach not only
benefits trade customers by saving time, but also
propels NBP forward as a leader in promoting
transparency in the construction supply chain.
NBP’s efforts to address and rectify the
issue of inconsistent pricing is just another
layer of its overarching goal to maintain a
more straightforward, trustful, and efficient
procurement process. With £1 million of building
products in stock at each Super Depot, plus a
delivery fleet of 65 vehicles, including specially
extended vehicles that can transport up to six
metre lengths.
NBP customers can order online any time up to
10pm or from any depot during working hours
via phone, email and WhatsApp for free next day
delivery direct-to-site.
EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS WITH NEW FORTEX NATURA
New from Freefoam Building Products, Fortex Natura cladding is manufactured
using cutting-edge digital printing technology, so it’s ‘virtually indistinguishable’
from natural wood.
“It has the look and feel of quality planed timber,” says Colin St John, Freefoam’s
Commercial Director. “But unlike natural wood, it doesn’t fade, and is guaranteed to look
as good in ten years as it does the day it’s installed. The development of this unique
cladding product has taken a significant investment of time and equipment, but the
results are beyond our expectations.”
Colin adds: “The feedback from our stockist and Registered Installer customers so far
has been incredibly positive, describing it as ‘just beautiful’ – and a market-disrupting
product.”
There are six wood finishes available in the Fortex Natura range: Aged Padauk,
Barnwood Oak, Grey Cedar, Greyed Oak, Malted Oak, and Siberian Larch. Each features a
non-repeating pattern from expertly edited photographs of real timber. This is printed onto
Freefoam’s foam PVC cladding boards using a special ink for external use, and a lacquer
topcoat for extreme durability.
A complete set of aluminium finishing trims is available in colours that perfectly
complement the six cladding options, all RAL number referenced for accurate matching to
windows, doors and roofline.
The premium V-groove cladding can be installed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
Low maintenance, it’s also easy to store, fit and handle, and is 100% recyclable.
Fortex Natura is supported with a brochure, display boards and hand samples. Call
SHEERLINE HELPS D&I WINDOWS 'GROW SUSTAINABLY'
D & I Windows has been announced as one of the latest companies to add Sheerline’s
premium aluminium range to its product offering.
The Barnsley-based fabricator and manufacturer pivoted from UPVC to aluminium because of rising
costs and increased competition post-pandemic. Since deciding to fabricate Sheerline’s versatile
whole-house aluminium systems, D & I has gone from strength to strength, even launching a new
company called Radius Aluminium, which is dedicated to supporting trade customers.
The launch of the new trade business comes after a busy period, which has seen the company grow
and enabled business owners and Directors, David Saxon and Ian Haddock, to achieve their goal of
creating a sustainable long-term business. www.sheerline.com
JACK ALUMINIUM SYSTEMS INTRODUCES PIVOT DOOR
Jack Aluminium Systems has introduced a pivot door to its ID30 range of internal glazing systems.
Available as both a single and double pivot door, the new addition to the range offers the same high specification as
its hinged and sliding door options, with the same ‘sleek and streamlined’ finish – perfectly aligned with contemporary
interiors. Rotating on a vertical axis, the pivot door delivers a seamless opening that can be swung both inwards and
outwards offering the ultimate flexibility. The pivot doors also do not require a frame, unlike alternative door types, due to the
weight being supported by the pivot, resulting in ‘a sleek system without any extra bulk’.
Andy Short, Jack Aluminium Systems Managing Director, said: “Whether it’s large domestic renovations, separating home
living spaces, or partitioning studios, working spaces and entrances in offices and commercial spaces, we wanted to make
sure that we continue to deliver versatility to our customers.” www.jackaluminium.com
Work Trousers
WHO WEARS THE TROUSERS?
Peter Dumigan, MD of the Hultafors Group UK, which owns the Snickers Workwear
brand, looks back at the evolution and purpose of the trouser, from warriors on horseback
centuries ago, to protecting your knees on the job site today...
It is said that the origins of trousers as a
functional, practical, garment can be traced
back to the warrior equestrian societies of
Eastern Europe and Asia Minor, as far back as
the sixth century BC. The Scythian and Persian
peoples developed trousers as a practical
alternative to wearing robes on horseback.
Trouser-type garments took many forms over the
next 2,000 years and it was only into the early
19th Century that ankle-length trousers – until
then worn mostly by the lower working classes
became more widely accepted as the garment
of choice throughout society. The evolutionary
process of trouser design and development
was one in which garments were tailored to the
practical needs of their wearers.
Levi Strauss’s work trouser for miners
It was further driven by the impact of the
industrial revolution and the need for clothing that
was specifically suited to the workplace. Probably
the most significant clothing development in the
19th Century was Levi Strauss’s invention of the
canvas work trouser for miners in 1853. It was
not until 1873 that further innovation was seen
with Strauss’ introduction of blue denim trousers,
later incorporating metal rivets for greater
garment durability and longevity.
Despite innovations such as the zipper-fly, the bib ‘n’
brace and the boilersuit, the workplace had to wait
over 100 years for the next stage in trouser evolution.
It was the invention by Matti Viio – a Swedish
electrician – of the holster trousers with
kneepads that heralded the Snickers Workwear
brand and the era of purpose-designed working
clothes for modern-day professional tradesmen
and women.
Since 1975, Snickers Workwear has been
inventing and reinventing work trousers with
kneepads, each with a combination of marketleading
design technology, hi-tech fabric
innovations for comfort and functionality and
more recently, a sharp focus on sustainability.
Snickers Workwear now has a range of over 90
styles of trousers with eight different types of
kneepad in the patented KneeGuard systems,
for individual worker needs in a variety of
working environments. From professional trades
in building and construction, to engineering
and maintenance, logistics and warehousing,
heavy and light industries as well as hazardous
workplaces, Snickers Workwear has a pair of
trousers to suit and kneepads for protection.
World first
In what is probably the most ground-breaking
work trouser innovation, the brand has now
launched the world’s first built-in, certified
kneepads which are completely integrated into
a pair of Snickers Workwear’s premium stretch
work trousers – the unique AllroundWork,
stretch trousers with Capsulized kneepads
and holster pockets. The result of an intensive
research and development process that has
spanned the last three years, they deliver lowprofile,
comfortable impact protection – tested,
performance validated and certified to exacting
international standards. These new work trousers
combine cutting-edge sportswear technology
with well-established workwear know-how, to
suit craftspeople who are constantly on the move
and want the comfort, flexibility and durability of
welded-into-place, certified knee protection.
Building Capsulized kneepads
Designed and engineered in partnership with YBC,
the Capsulized kneepad components comfortably
deliver effective penetration protection and
impact absorbtion for the wearer.
A durable Cordura stretch covering provides
external fabric durability. It integrates with the first
performance layer of high-density foam which
delivers maximum protection. This combines
further with a shield of Ortholite comfort foam
technology that’s highly shock-absorbent.
Comfort and protection is further enhanced by
a foam comfort layer for pressure release when
kneeling. Finally, there’s an inner polyester fabric
which seals the outer protection layers onto the
trouser leg and provides a comfortable surface
between the wearer’s knee and the kneepad itself.
Protective layers
It’s effectively a Capsulized layer cake with
protective layers that work with each other to
dissipate the energy created by the impact of
working on your knees, or accidental bumps in
and around the workplace.
It’s widely accepted that the long-term effects of
knee injuries and the impact of working on your
knees can cause of a lifetime of discomfort and
restricted movement. Yet history has shown that
properly designed trousers have an important
part to play in delivering comfort, efficiency and
wellbeing in physical activities.
The design technology in work trousers has
developed considerably since Strauss’ first
purpose-built workwear for miners, but Snickers
Workwear’s latest innovation takes trouser design
and development process to a new level.
CALLS FOR TOOL THIEVES TO FACE STRICTER PUNISHMENT
The motoring team at Lease Van are calling for tool thieves to face stricter
punishment in hopes of reducing the number of incidents in the UK.
Under the Theft Act 1968, a maximum sentence of seven years can be
given to someone found guilty of breaking into a van. If the amount stolen
totals under £200, the maximum sentence they can face is six months.
However, the problem many van owners face is not all criminals are
caught and convicted, meaning they can be left thousands of pounds out of
pocket. Tradespeople also face the chance of uncaught thieves returning and
stealing the newly replaced equipment.
Tim Alcock, motoring expert at Lease Van, said: “A van is like a second
home to tradespeople and having it broken into is a devastating experience
as it severely restricts their work routine. What’s shocking is that if a
criminal steals under £200 worth of tools, the maximum sentence they can
receive is six months. This is only the maximum, so in a lot of cases this
sentence won’t even be applied. Of course what makes the situation worse
is that not all criminals are caught which may reinforce the fear that they’ll
return and steal again. While van alarms, CCTV and padlocks can help deter
thugs from stealing the tools, it can’t guarantee that the equipment won’t
be stolen. Tool thefts have been on the rise in recent years, meaning the
problem isn’t going away anytime soon. We believe increasing the maximum
sentence will make people think twice before breaking into someone’s van
and stealing their hard-earned resources.” leasecar.uk/van-leasing
SPARES 'HELP HARD WORKING TOOLS LAST LONGER'
Knipex offers spare parts for many of its tools with interchangeable components, so you can
maintain your tools’ performance without incurring the cost of complete replacements.
Renewing certain parts of the tools like blades and push buttons when they wear out is economical,
environmentally conscious and easy.
For example, the Knipex self-adjusting insulation stripper is designed to strip wires ranging from
solid and multicore to finely stranded conductors. It works well with standard insulation materials
and can handle flat ribbon conductors up to 10 mm in width. Its sharp blade, made of oil-hardened
special tool steel, cuts cleanly through insulation without damaging the wires beneath, a critical
factor for maintaining both safety and functionality. www.knipex.com
