BYD taps into Rwanda market 

BYD (Build Your Dream), a 

leading Chinese electric 

vehicle manufacturer, has 

recently announced its 

entrance into Rwanda market, 

following its success expansion 

in Kenya. The company’s strategic 

move into Rwanda is in line with the 

country’s commitment to sustainable 

development, providing BYD with 

the opportunity to introduce its 

electric models to the African 

market. 

BYD’s impressive market position 

is evidenced by its status as China’s 

top-selling automaker and brand. 

Notably, in December 2023, the 

company experienced a remarkable 

45% increase in sales, reaching a 

total of 3,024,417 vehicles sold for 

the year, representing a substantial 

61.9% surge compared to the 

previous year.

In a significant development, BasiGo, 

a pioneering electric transit service 

in East Africa, has incorporated BYD 

buses into its fleet. The expansion 

of BasiGo into Rwanda in July 2023 

aimed to address the shortage of 

electric transit options in the country. 

BYD’s footprint in Africa expanded 

further in July 2023 with the 

introduction of the Standard Range 

and Extended Range variants of its 

Atto 3 model in the South African 

market. The company’s expansion 

from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal 

provinces to the Northern Cape in 

November signifies its continued 

growth and presence in the region.

Isuzu East Africa appointed official distributor for UD Trucks in 

Kenya 

Isuzu East Africa, has been 

awarded distributorship rights of 

UD Trucks in Kenya, and will now 

be responsible for assembly, sales, 

and after-sales support for the UD 

Trucks in the Kenyan market. 

Speaking at a media event held at its 

Nairobi premises, Isuzu East Africa’s 

Managing Director, Ms Rita Kavashe, 

said the company was delighted 

to add the UD Trucks brand to its 

portfolio. 

“We understand commercial vehicles 

and their applications being a key 

player in the industry. Isuzu East 

Africa is also a strong and trusted 

automotive distributor in the region 

and has been the overall market 

leader for 12 consecutive years. This 

offers UD customers assurance of the 

support they will receive from Isuzu 

East Africa,” she explained.

Arrow Electronics Expands Centre of Excellence in Egypt for 

Next-gen Automotive Capabilities 

Arrow Electronics, a

Egypt set to build a car manufacturing factory in 

collaboration with Indian company 


Egypt plans to build an 

electric and diesel car 

manufacturing factory with 

a production capacity of up 

to 6,000 vehicles in collaboration 

with Hinduja Group, one of India’s 

largest companies. The move will 

help bolster the North African 

country’s economy and create job 

opportunities for Egyptians. 

Egypt’s Minister of Planning and 

Economic Development Hala El- 

Said, who is also chairperson of the 

Sovereign Fund of Egypt, held talks 

with Hinduja Group chairperson 

Prakash Hinduja on the sidelines of 

the World Governments Summit in 

Dubai. 

The facility will be established 

in collaboration with Egypt’s 

state-owned El-Nasr Automotive

meeting, El-Said highlighted the 

role of the country’s sovereign fund 

in bolstering partnerships with the 

local and foreign private sector. 

She said: “The fund is an ideal 

partner for the private sector as 

it has a special law that gives it 

flexibility in investing without being 

bound by government rules and 

regulations as well as it has the 

freedom and structural flexibility to 

implement various investments.” 

She also emphasized the state’s 

efforts and the huge investments 

it has pumped into preparing the 

infrastructure to attract local and 

foreign investors.

Tata Motors launches its Ultra range of new-generation, 

smart trucks in South Africa 

Tata Motors, India’s leading

Foton returns to South Africa market 

Six years after market exit, 

Foton is returning to South 

Africa with a range of 

light commercial vehicles. 

The Chinese automotive brand is 

headquartered in Changping, Beijing, 

and is a subsidiary of the BAIC Group. 

It is not specified yet, which light 

commercial models will be sold 

locally, only that they will be 

available in diesel and electric 

versions and priced 

competitively.

quarter of 2024, Foton 

will be imported 

by Mandarin Parts 

Distributors (MPD), a 

subsidiary of Combined 

Motor Holdings (CMH). 

Since 2009 MPD has 

serviced and supplied

Algeria to re-open Kia car plant 

Algeria has plans to reopen 

a car assembly plant 

owned by South Korea’s 

s Kia as part of plans to 

expand local auto industry in the 

North African Arab country, this is 

according to the Industry Minister 

Ali Aoun. 

According to Elkhabar newspaper, 

Aoun declined to make clear 

whether the plant would restart 

production under the same brand 

name when it is reopened in March. 

“The Kia car plant will return to 

production before the (Moslem 

fasting) month of Ramadan despite 

the difficulties and obstacles that 

faced this plant,” the Minister said. 

In May 2020, Kia decided to shut 

down its car assembly unit in Batna 

Northeast of the capital Algiers 

due to supply disruptions after the

Algerian government decided to 

impose a ban on import of auto 

spare parts. 

The plant, which was launched in 

2018, had a designed production 

capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year. 

GKN Automotive to shut down Roxboro plant 

GKN Automotive has released 

a statement indicating they 

will be closing their plant in 

Roxboro as they consolidate 

their North American machining and 

assembly operations in Alamance 

County as part of a phased approach 

in 2024. 

According to the company, around 

half of Roxboro’s 475 employees will 

have the opportunity to transfer to 

their Alamance site. 

“Our immediate priority is to support 

all affected employees through this 

process,” they said. 

Recent investment in both Alamance 

and their Sanford Precision Forging 

facility has created a full End-2- 

End production facility that will 

optimize support and delivery for 

customers producing both internal 

combustion engine (ICE) and electric

vehicles (EVs) and increase their 

competitiveness in the region to 

accommodate potential growth. 

“As a result, we have taken the 

difficult decision to close our 

Roxboro facility,” they said in the 

statement.

Nigeria to achieve 1 million CNG Auto-gas Conversion by 2027 

The Federal Government of 

Nigeria is set to establish 

a common gas vehicle 

standard system in Nigeria 

by 2024. So also convert 1 million 

CNG Auto-gas by 2027 with addition 

of 250,000 new Bifuel Vehicles. 

A Gas and Renewable Energy 

Specialist, Adelanke Dayo-Adepoju, 

made this known during the Major 

Energy Marketers Association of 

Nigeria, MEMAN, quarterly Press 

Webinar and Engagement with the 

theme; Advantages of Autogas (LPG 

and CNG) and the Evolving Price of 

PMS held in Lagos. 

She further revealed that the 

government would also support 

the establishment of 1,000 autogas 

conversion workshops by 2027, 

aiming to convert 250,000 vehicles 

annually for 20 years, creating 

250,000 jobs.

would convert all FGN fleet to Autogas 

by 2030 and implement EO on 

New Purchases by 2025. 

So also facilitate investment of 

up to $2 billion in 5 years into 

CNG Infrastructure & Supply. The 

government will also support 

training and certifying 25,000 

autogas conversion technicians by 

2027 for complex conversions and 

retrofits. The expert further revealed 

that Nigeria has the 9th largest 

Reserves Upstream Midstream 

Downstream CNG. 

Fenix Parts Completes Acquisition of Pacific Rim Auto Parts 

Fenix Parent LLC, operating as 

Fenix Parts (“Fenix Parts”), 

a leading recycler and 

reseller of original equipment 

manufacturer automotive parts, has 

announced that, it has completed its 

acquisition of the assets of Pacific 

Rim Auto Parts (“Pacific”) in Ft. 

Worth, Texas. Pacific is a specialty 

automotive recycler focused on 

ecommerce part listing and sales. 

“We are pleased to announce the 

acquisition of Pacific and welcome 

the talented team to Fenix,” Fenix 

Parts CEO Bill Stevens says. “We are 

excited about the opportunity to 

leverage Pacific’s specialty vehicle 

acquisition expertise with Fenix’s 

experience recycling hybrid vehicles. 

Our plan is for the Pacific team 

to focus on specialty, hybrid and 

electric vehicle recycling utilizing 

e-commerce sales channels.” 

Fenix Parts, backed by Stellex 

Capital Management LLC, is a 

leading recycler and reseller of 

OEM automotive products. The 

company’s primary business is 

recovering and reselling OEM 

parts, components and systems 

reclaimed from damaged, totaled 

or low-value vehicles. The company 

was founded in 2014 to create a 

network that offers sales, fulfillment 

and distribution in key regional 

markets in the United States. Fenix 

operates locations in the Northeast, 

Southeast, Southwest and Midwest, 

and Fenix companies have been in 

business for more than 25 years on 

average. 

The Pacific Rim purchase follows 

that of Stafford’s Auto Parts, 

Montgomery, Illinois, which was 

announced in January. That purchase 

marked Fenix Parts’ seventh 

acquisition in the Midwest. 

With offices in New York, Detroit, 

Pittsburgh and London, Stellex 

Capital is a private equity firm 

that seeks to identify and deploy 

capital in opportunities that stand 

to benefit from its operationally 

focused and hands-on approach to 

investing.

Automotive spoke to Mr. Andrea Pedrotti, CEO of 

4CR and Mr. Marc Drews, the Key Account Manager, about 

4CR’s journey over the past two decades, their market 

impact, unwavering commitment, accomplishments and 

future contributions to improving the car refinishing 

market as well as increasing their product range. 

Africa Automotive: What’s one word to describe 4CR 

and your 20th Anniversary? 

Andrea Pedrotti: One word to describe 4CR and our 

20th Anniversary is “Limitless.” The choice of “Limitless” 

encapsulates the essence of 4CR’s journey over the past 

two decades and aligns seamlessly with our motto, 

“No Limits.” It reflects our commitment to pushing 

boundaries, exploring new horizons, and consistently 

challenging ourselves to innovate without constraints. 

In celebrating our 20th Anniversary, “Limitless” signifies 

the endless possibilities, continuous growth, and 

boundless potential that define 4CR’s enduring presence 

in the dynamic car refinish industry. It symbolizes our

Further, the Green H2 production 

business model, as demonstrated by 

Hyundai, involves the OEM taking 

an active role in the production of 

green hydrogen. 

• Hydrogen use cases in heavy-duty 

commercial vehicles 

Hydrogen has emerged as a 

promising and sustainable 

alternative in heavy-duty commercial 

vehicles, particularly in transit buses 

and class 8 trucks. Leading OEMs 

such as Hyundai, Toyota, Daimler, 

Nikola, Zhongtong Bus, and Yutong 

Bus, among others, have actively 

embraced hydrogen fuel cell 

technology by deploying their FCEBs 

(Fuel Cell Electric Buses) and FCETs 

(Fuel Cell Electric Trucks) in regions 

like Asia Pacific, Europe, and North 

America. China is a global leader 

in adopting hydrogen-powered 

buses and trucks worldwide. Further, 

Europe is witnessing a surge in 

demand for fuel-cell transit buses. 

The region has set ambitious goals, 

with plans to have over 1,200 fuelcell 

electric transit buses operational 

by 2025 with an investment of USD 

116 million. In the United States, 

the hydrogen landscape is evolving 

rapidly, driven by the country’s USD 

7 billion Hydrogen Hub plan. This 

initiative aims to establish hydrogen 

stations or hubs across the nation. 

• Hydrogen use cases in off-road 

vehicles 

Hydrogen fuel cells have been 

increasingly adopted in various offroad 

industrial vehicles, showcasing 

a promising trend that began in 

the early 2010s. One prominent 

sector utilizing hydrogen fuel 

cell technology is the material 

handling industry, with companies 

like Hyster Yale, Toyota Material 

Handling, Hangacha, and Doosan 

Bobcat incorporating fuel cells in 

forklifts and tow tractors. In the 

construction industry, hydrogen 

fuel cells are gradually making 

their mark in vehicles such as 

excavators, loaders, dump trucks, 

concrete mixers, and cranes. Leading 

companies like JCB, Anglo, Terex, 

Adrighem, and Hyundai are currently 

testing fuel cell applications with 

limited commercialization. However, 

the sector is expected to witness 

significant growth from 2026. 

Mining vehicles have also embraced 

hydrogen fuel cell technology, 

primarily in mining trucks and dump 

trucks. Companies like Komatsu 

and Anglo are exploring ways to 

expand the use of fuel cells to other 

mining equipment in the coming 

years. Hydrogen fuel cells have 

also found their way into off-road 


utility vehicles, including all-terrain 

vehicles (ATVs), utility task vehicles 

(UTVs), snowmobiles, and golf 

carts. Key players such as Toyota, 

Yamaha, BRP, and Spectronic have 

recently launched these vehicles 

in 2022-2023. With lower power 

requirements for these utility 

vehicles, commercialization is 

anticipated to gain momentum from 

2025. 

• Development of H2-ICE as 

an alternative for Hydrogen in 

Transportation 

H2-ICE vehicles present a practical 

alternative to FCEVs, offering 

advantages such as an established 

supply chain, quicker refueling 

times, and lower operational costs. 

Adopting H2-ICE vehicles by leading 

OEMs such as Toyota, MAN, and 

Daimler signifies a significant 

shift towards hydrogen-powered 

transportation. Since 2022, 

these OEMs have been 

actively developing and 

testing H2-ICE prototypes. 

Key automotive engine 

manufacturers, including 

Bosch, Cummins, Mitsubishi, 

and Garrett, are also gearing 

up for a commercial launch 

of their H2-ICE engines 

by 2025. Commercial 

vehicles are anticipated to 

be the primary segment 

for H2-ICE engines in the 

upcoming years.
