is a thriving sector that offers a wide range
of products and services to vehicle owners. It
encompasses all the activities and businesses
involved in the manufacturing, distribution, and retailing
of automotive parts, accessories, equipment, and services
Factors Driving the Growing Demand in the African
Automotive Aftermarket
Several factors are driving the growing demand for
aftermarket products and services in the African
automotive market. Firstly, the increasing vehicle
ownership in the region has led to a higher demand for
maintenance and repair services. As more people own
vehicles, the need for replacement parts and accessories
naturally increases.
Secondly, the average age of vehicles in Africa is
relatively high compared to other regions. This means
that there is a greater need for repairs and replacements
due to wear and tear. As vehicles age, their components
deteriorate and need to be replaced, creating a
significant market for aftermarket products.
And thirdly, the affordability
of aftermarket products and
services compared to
original equipment
parts is a major
driving factor.
Many vehicle
owners in Africa
prefer aftermarket
products due
to their lower
cost, while still
maintaining good
quality. This affordability
factor has contributed to
the growth of the aftermarket industry in the
region.
Availability of Aftermarket Products and
Services in Africa
These companies offer a wide range of aftermarket
products, including engine parts, electrical
components, body parts, accessories, and performanceenhancing
products.
products and services. Online platforms and e-commerce
Aftermarket Industry
websites allow customers to browse and purchase
products from the comfort of their homes, expanding the
reach of aftermarket manufacturers and retailers even in
remote areas.
One significant trend is the increasing demand for ecofriendly
and sustainable products. As environmental
awareness rises, more vehicle owners are seeking
aftermarket products that are environmentally
responsible and have a lower carbon footprint.
Another notable trend is the rising interest in
customization and personalization. African vehicle
owners are increasingly looking for aftermarket products
that allow them to express their individuality and
enhance the aesthetics of their vehicles. This trend has
led to an increase in the availability of custom body
kits, interior accessories, and performance-enhancing
modifications in the market.
Furthermore, the adoption of advanced
technologies in the automotive
industry has also influenced the
significant portion of the growing online customer base
in Africa.
challenges and obstacles that aftermarket businesses
face in the African market. One major challenge is the
presence of counterfeit and substandard products. The
influx of low-quality aftermarket products not only
tarnishes the reputation of genuine manufacturers but
also poses a risk to vehicle owners. To overcome this
challenge, regulatory bodies and industry associations
need to collaborate to enforce strict quality control
standards and educate consumers about the importance
of purchasing genuine products.
Another obstacle is the lack of standardized pricing
and product information across the African automotive
Strategies for Navigating the African Automotive
Aftermarket
To navigate the African automotive aftermarket
successfully, businesses need to adopt effective
African consumers is crucial. This will help aftermarket
businesses identify gaps in the market and develop
products and services that cater to the unique
requirements of the African market.
distributors and retailers is essential for expanding
market reach. Collaborating with established local
partners can help aftermarket manufacturers and
retailers gain access to a wider customer base and
leverage their knowledge of the local market.
High-Quality
Automotive Spare Parts
for Vehicle Safety
By Dorcas Kang’ereha
The first automobile created in 1885 changed
humanity for good, and we now depend on them
for traveling and moving goods. Just as much
as your vehicle takes care of you, it’s best you
return the favor by fitting broken parts with high-quality
replacements. There’s great importance in investing in
high-quality parts, and this article will explain why this
is so.
Significance of Using High-Quality Automotive
Spare Parts for Safety
Original vehicle parts usually have an unmatched
quality, this is a reason why they last before prompting a
change. Therefore, you should do your vehicle a favor by
replacing worn-out parts with high-quality replacements
for sustained high function and output. High-quality
spare parts enhance your vehicle’s safety by ensuring
optimal performance. These parts have a reduced risk of
malfunctions and can guarantee long-term durability.
Risks and Consequences of Using Counterfeit
and Substandard Spare Parts
Fake or substandard spare parts compromise the vehicle
safety particularly on the African roads. Although
quite cliché, so to speak, African off-road tracks can be
unforgiving, meaning you rather should ensure every
part you include in your vehicle is up to the task. In
the long run, the chances of experiencing frequent
breakdowns and dealing with higher subsequent costs
due to using fake spare parts can always be high. In
the worst-case scenario, sub-part vehicle spare parts
can have a negative environmental impact, void your
warranty or lead to legal consequences or causing a fatal
accident.
Spare Parts
A Guide for Looking for Genuine Spare Parts
According to Andrzej Senkowski, Founder of Polcar, “The
body structural parts responsible for car safety are not
produced by aftermarket factories.” He further observed
that, beside the original parts there are also hundreds
of aftermarket parts manufacturers that produce visible
(cosmetic) parts like fenders, bumpers, bonnets, grills,
headlamps, corner lamps etc. that have no influence
on vehicle safety. His reference is based on the crash
tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety (IIHS), which states that, “The crash performance
of parts from non-OE suppliers would have no impact
compared to cosmetic parts from original-equipment
manufacturers in terms of their safety.
Therefore, as an African vehicle owner, seeking genuine
spare parts should be your priority. Ensure you always
purchase from reputable dealers and authorized
distributors. Verify product labels, packaging, and
serial numbers to ensure authenticity. Besides, educate
yourself on the specific parts needed, and be cautious of
meager prices, which may indicate counterfeit products.
Establishing a relationship with trusted repair service
providers and relying on their expertise can also aid in
identifying and sourcing authentic automotive spare
parts.
Conclusion
Genuine and original-quality vehicle spare parts can
keep it in good shape for the long haul. However,
based on Block Exemption 461/2010 EU Commission
Regulations valid in Europe, matching quality
replacement parts can be successfully used - to ensure
safe operation of vehicles. It concerns wear and so the
body parts as well. Therefore, for every driver, especially
if you are travel long distances and in unforgiving road
conditions, like the Africanroad terrains, always entrust
yourself with proficient and authentic vehicle repair
companies to obtain the highest quality spare parts for
better safety.
Clean Car, Clear Wallet
Enjoy a Clean Ride and More Money in Your Wallet!
By Lisa Brown
Are you tired of overspending on car maintenance
and repairs? Have you ever considered the costsaving
benefits of regular car detailing? Well, let’s
explore how keeping your ride clean can help keep
more money in your wallet. Say goodbye to expensive
trips to the mechanic and hello to a sparkling clean car
that shines inside and out - all while saving you cash in
the long run. Let’s dive into the world of car detailing
and discover how it can make both your vehicle and your
bank account looking their best.
The Struggle of Keeping a Clean Car and the
Benefits of Car Detailing Beyond Just Appearance
For many car owners, keeping their vehicles clean is an
ongoing battle. From road dust and grime to food spills
and pet hair, it can feel like an endless cycle of cleaning,
only for it to get dirty again shortly after. However,
maintaining a clean car goes beyond just aesthetics - it
also plays a significant role in preserving your vehicle’s
value and saving you money in the long run.
The truth is, our cars serve as more than just modes of
transportation; they are investments that we rely on
for daily tasks such as commuting to work or running
errands. As such, it is essential to keep them in good
condition not just for visual appeal but also for their
overall performance.
Car detailing refers to the process of thoroughly
cleaning and restoring a vehicle inside out. It involves
a combination of techniques such as washing, waxing,
polishing, and even reconditioning interiors using
specialized tools and products. While some may view
car detailing as a luxury service reserved for high-end
vehicles or special occasions, regular maintenance
through detailing can have numerous cost-saving
benefits.
Regularly scheduled detailing appointments can prevent
potential damages that may arise from neglecting your
vehicle’s cleanliness. For example, built-up dirt and
grime can clog air filters or damage paintwork over time
if left untreated. By regularly cleaning your car’s exterior
and interior through detailing services, you not only
maintain its appearance but also prolong its lifespan by
preventing wear-and-tear.
Also, opting for professional car detailing rather than
DIY methods could save you money in the long run.
Many household cleaners such as dish soap or glass
cleaner contain harsh chemicals that may strip off
protective coatings on your car’s surfaces when used
repeatedly over time. This could result in costly repairs
or replacements down the line.
Additionally, investing in regular car detailing services
could potentially increase your vehicle’s resale value. A
well-maintained car with a clean history and minimal
signs of wear and tear is more attractive to potential
buyers, allowing you to negotiate for a higher selling
price.
While keeping a clean car may feel like an endless
struggle, regular detailing appointments can have
significant benefits beyond just appearance, such as
preserving its value and saving you money in the long
run.
What is Car Detailing?
Car detailing is a comprehensive cleaning and
restoration process for your vehicle, aimed at enhancing
its overall appearance and maintaining its value. It
involves meticulous cleaning, polishing, and protecting
every surface of your car, both inside and out.
The term “detailing” refers to the thoroughness and
attention given to even the smallest details of your car’s
exterior and interior components. This goes beyond a
basic car wash or vacuum; it includes a deep-cleaning
of every nook and cranny using specialized products and
techniques.
A professional car detailer will start by thoroughly
washing the exterior of your car with high-quality soaps
that are gentle on the paint but tough on dirt. They
will then perform a clay bar treatment to remove any
embedded contaminants like tree sap or tar that regular
washing may not be able to remove.
Once the exterior is clean, the detailer will carefully
inspect it for scratches, swirl marks, or other
imperfections in the paint. If needed, they will use
various techniques such as machine buffing or hand
polishing to restore the shine and smoothness of your
vehicle’s paintwork.
Next comes the interior detailing process, which
Car Detailing
Make both your
vehicle and your
wallet looking
their best.
involves vacuuming all surfaces followed by steam
cleaning for carpets and upholstery. Leather seats can
also be conditioned to prevent cracking over time. The
dashboard, console, door panels, windows, and mirrors
are also thoroughly cleaned with specialized products.
Detailers pay special attention to hidden areas that are
often overlooked during regular cleaning such as air
vents or seat tracks where dirt can accumulate over time.
They also use professional-grade tools like toothbrushes
or small brushes to get into tight spaces for a more
thorough clean.
In addition to deep-cleaning, specialized services like
headlight restoration or engine bay detailing can also be
included in a full car detailing package.
Apart from enhancing visual appeal and making your
car look almost new again, regular detailing has many
cost-saving benefits. Regular waxing helps protect
against sun damage and maintains the integrity of
your vehicle’s paint, preventing costly repainting in the
future. Detailing also helps prevent rust and corrosion by
removing dirt and debris from hard-to-reach areas.
Furthermore, a well-maintained interior can extend the
life of your car’s upholstery and prevent the need for
costly repairs or replacements down the line. A clean car
also reduces the risk of mold or bacteria growth inside,
which can pose health hazards and additional expenses
for cleaning or removal.
Car detailing is an investment that not only improves
the aesthetics of your vehicle but also saves you money
in the long run by preserving its value and preventing
potential damages. So next time you’re considering
skipping a detail, remember that it’s more than just a
routine cleaning; it’s an investment in your car’s overall
health and longevity.
Explanation of the process and what it entails
Car detailing is a thorough and comprehensive cleaning
process that goes beyond a basic car wash. It involves
deep cleaning, restoring, and protecting the interior and
exterior of your car to make it look as good as new. This
process can help you save money in the long run and
keep your vehicle in top condition.
The first step in car detailing is a thorough inspection
of the vehicle to determine its needs. This includes
checking for any scratches, dents, or stains on the
exterior, as well as assessing the condition of the interior
surfaces such as seats, carpets, and dashboard.
Next, an exterior wash is done to remove all dirt, grime,
and debris from the surface of your car. This helps create
a clean canvas for further detailing processes. Special
attention is paid to hard-to-reach areas such as wheel
wells and door jambs.
After washing, comes claying which involves using
specialized clay bars to remove contaminants like tar
and bugs that are embedded on the surface of your car’s
paint. This step helps smoothen out any imperfections
on the paint surface before applying wax or sealant.
The next step is polishing which aims to get rid of minor
scratches and swirl marks on your car’s paintwork. A
high-quality polish compound is applied with a buffer
machine to restore shine and gloss to your vehicle’s
finish.
Once polishing is complete, a layer of wax or sealant is
applied onto the surface of your car’s paintwork. These
products provide protection against UV rays, water spots,
bird droppings, and other elements that could damage
your car’s paint job.
The interior detailing process involves thorough
cleaning using specialized cleaners for each type of
surface material such as leather seats or fabric carpets.
All surfaces are vacuumed while leather surfaces are
conditioned to prevent cracking or fading.
All windows are cleaned from both inside and outside
using specialized glass cleaners for streak-free results.
The wheels and tires are also cleaned and dressed to
give them a new, glossy look.
Car detailing may seem like an added expense, but
it actually helps save money in the long run. Regular
detailing can prolong the lifespan of your vehicle’s
paintwork and interior materials, avoiding costly
repairs or replacements. Additionally, a clean and wellmaintained
car can also fetch a higher resale value. So
go ahead and treat your car to a professional detailing
service – you won’t regret it!
The Cost-Saving Benefits of Car Detailing
Unlock the Money-Saving Secrets
Car detailing may seem like just
another added expense to your
monthly budget, but did you
know that it can actually save
you money in the long run? It’s easy
to overlook the cost-saving benefits
of car detailing, but having a clean
and well-maintained car can lead to
significant savings over time. Let’s
take a closer look at how regular car
detailing can actually benefit your
wallet.
1. Increased Resale Value
One of the biggest cost-saving
benefits of car detailing is its
potential to increase the resale value
of your vehicle. A well-maintained
and aesthetically pleasing car will
undoubtedly fetch a higher price
than one that has been neglected. By
investing in professional detailing
services, you are not only making
your car look good but also keeping
it in top condition. This will attract
potential buyers and allow you to
sell your car for a better price when
the time comes.
2. Preventing Costly Repairs
Regular interior and exterior
detailing help maintain your
car’s appearance as well as its
functionality. Professional detailers
use products and techniques that
protect surfaces from wear and
tear, preventing damage such as
scratches, fading, rust, or corrosion.
This means fewer repairs down the
road which translates into savings
for you.
3. Improved Fuel Efficiency
Another way regular car detailing
can save you money is by improving
fuel efficiency. A dirty exterior
accumulates dirt and debris which
creates drag on the surface of the
vehicle, forcing it to work harder
while using more gas. Additionally,
buildup in engine components
such as spark plugs or air filters can
decrease fuel efficiency even further.
By regularly cleaning these areas
through detailing services, you can
improve your gas mileage and save
money at the pump.
4. Extending Vehicle Lifespan
Neglecting proper maintenance
for your vehicle can lead to bigger
problems down the line which
26 Africa Automotive News l 2024

January-February issue l 2024
ultimately results in costly repairs or even replacement
of certain parts or even the entire vehicle itself.
Regularly scheduled detailings can help identify and
prevent potential issues before they become major
problems, thus extending the lifespan of your car and
saving you from significant expenses in the future.
5. Personal Savings
Last but not least, having a clean and well-maintained
car can also save you money in personal savings. A
clutter-free interior means that you are less likely to lose
items or forget about important documents, reducing
the need for costly replacements. Additionally, regularly
detailing your car can also improve your mental health
by reducing stress levels associated with a messy or
dirty environment. This, in turn, can lead to increased
productivity and potentially higher earnings.
While car detailing may seem like an extra expense
at first glance, it actually offers numerous cost-saving
benefits in the long run. From increasing resale value to
preventing costly repairs and improving fuel efficiency,
investing in professional detailing services is an
investment in both the appearance and functionality of
your vehicle as well as your wallet.
Expensive vs. Affordable: Comparing the cost
of professional detailing to DIY options
When it comes to keeping your car clean, there are two
main options: hiring a professional detailing service
or doing it yourself. Many people assume that hiring
a professional is the more expensive option, but is
that always true? In this section, we will compare the
costs of professional detailing and DIY options to help
you decide which route is most cost-effective for your
budget.
Professional detailing services can vary greatly in price
depending on where you live and what level of service
you choose. On average, a basic exterior detail can
cost anywhere from $50-$100, while a full interior and
exterior package can cost upwards of $200 or more. This
may seem like a large expense upfront, but let’s break
down the costs to see how they compare to DIY options.
Firstly, professional detailing services often use highquality
products and equipment that can be costly
for an individual to purchase. These specialized tools
and cleaning solutions can provide better results than
what you may achieve with store-bought products.
Additionally, professionals have experience and training
in properly using these products, ensuring they are used
efficiently and effectively without any waste.
On the other hand, DIY options may seem less expensive
initially because you are purchasing smaller quantities
of products for one-time use. However, if you plan on
regularly maintaining your car’s appearance yourself,
Car Detailing
these recurring purchases can add up over time.
Furthermore, if you do not have experience with certain
cleaning techniques or do not use proper tools and
solutions correctly, the results may not be as satisfactory
as those achieved by professionals.
Another factor to consider when comparing costs is time.
Detailing your car yourself requires significant time and
effort that many people simply cannot spare between
work and other responsibilities. Hiring a professional
allows you to focus on other tasks while they take care
of cleaning your car thoroughly.
It’s crucial to remember the value of your own time
when considering expenses. If it takes you several hours
to detail your car yourself compared to a professional
who can do it in an hour or two, what is your time
worth? As the saying goes, time is money, and hiring a
professional may ultimately save you more in terms of
productivity and personal value.
Ultimately, the cost of professional detailing versus DIY
options will vary depending on your location, budget,
and needs. While DIY options may seem more affordable
upfront, considering all factors such as product costs,
results achieved, and time spent may reveal that hiring a
professional detailing service is the most cost-effective
option in the long run.
Long-Term Savings: How regular detailing can
save money on maintenance and repairs
A clean and well-maintained car not only looks great,
but it can also save you money in the long run. Regular
detailing is an essential aspect of car maintenance that
can prolong the life of your vehicle and prevent costly
repairs. In this section, we will dive into how regular
detailing can save you money on maintenance and
repairs in the long term.
One major benefit of regular detailing is that it prevents
dirt, grime, and other contaminants from damaging your
car’s exterior paint. If left untreated, these particles can
eat away at the clear coat and cause permanent damage
to the paint. This damage is not only unsightly but can
also lead to rusting and oxidation over time. By regularly
washing and waxing your car with professional detailers,
you are creating a protective barrier that will help shield
your paint from these harsh elements. This preventative
measure will ultimately save you money on repainting
costs in the future.
In addition to protecting your paint job, regular detailing
can also have a significant impact on preventing
mechanical issues. A thorough cleaning of your engine
bay by a professional detailer removes built-up oil
residues and debris that can clog air filters or interfere
with engine performance. By ensuring proper ventilation
for your engine, you are reducing its workload, which
Car Detailing
leads to fewer repairs down the road.
Moreover, neglecting to maintain a clean interior
can result in lasting damage such as stains or tears
on upholstery or carpets. Detailing services include
thorough vacuuming and steam cleaning of carpets,
seats, and mats to remove any deep-seated dirt or
bacteria buildup that could lead to odors or mold growth
if left unchecked. Regularly conditioning leather seats
also helps them stay supple and prevents them from
cracking over time – saving you money on expensive
reupholstering costs.
Regular detailing also provides opportunities for early
detection of minor damages before they become more
severe issues that require significant repair costs. Worn
out wipers blades need to be replaced regularly and can
cause damage to your windshield if ignored. Professional
detailers are trained to spot these minor damages,
preventing you from paying for more expensive repairs
in the future.
Investing a small amount of money in regular detailing
can save you significant costs on maintenance and
repairs over time. Not only does it keep your car looking
its best, but it also helps your vehicle run smoothly
and efficiently while preventing potential issues that
could be costly to fix. So, make sure to schedule regular
detailing appointments for your car – your wallet will
thank you!
Convenience Factor: How car detailing can save
time and hassle
Car detailing is not just about achieving a shiny and
clean exterior, but it also offers significant timesaving
and convenience benefits. In today’s fast-paced
world, where most people are balancing multiple
responsibilities, time is of the essence. This is where car
detailing comes in as a lifesaver by saving you time and
hassle with its efficient and thorough services.
Firstly, regular car detailing can save you countless hours
of cleaning your own vehicle. Most of us lead busy lives
January-February issue l 2024
with work, family commitments, and personal pursuits
that leave little room for car maintenance. As a result,
our cars end up gathering dust and grime over time,
which not only affects their appearance but also has
long-term effects on their performance. By investing in
professional car detailing services instead, you can free
up your schedule while ensuring that your car remains in
top condition both aesthetically and mechanically.
Furthermore, having your car detailed at a reputable
service provider saves you from the hassle of purchasing
expensive cleaning products or equipment. These
products must be carefully chosen to avoid damaging
your vehicle’s finish or interior materials. On the other
hand, professional detailers use specialized tools and
high-quality products tailored to each specific area of
your car to deliver superior results without any risk of
damage.
Another aspect that adds to the convenience factor is
that many mobile detailing companies offer on-site
services at your home or office. This eliminates the
need for dropping off or picking up your vehicle from a
shop saving you both time and effort. With this option
available, you can get back to completing important
tasks while experts take care of cleaning every nook and
cranny of your car.
Moreover, opting for regular car detailing can also save
you money in the long run by preventing major repairs
due to neglect or poor maintenance. Detailing involves
deep cleaning every inch inside out - including hard-toreach
areas like door jambs and engine compartments
- which reduces wear-and-tear caused by dirt buildup
over time. This not only preserves the value of your
vehicle but also saves you from expensive repairs or
replacements down the line.
Making car detailing a part of your regular car
maintenance routine can ultimately save you time and
hassle while providing long-term cost-saving benefits.
With professional detailers taking care of your vehicle’s
cleanliness and upkeep, you can have more time for
yourself and enjoy a clean car without having to lift a
finger.
Proven Vehicle Maintenance Tips for Long-Term Durability
best, preventing costly repairs down the line.
Checking and Maintaining Proper Tire Pressure
Maintaining proper tire pressure is not only crucial
for your safety on the road but also for improving
fuel efficiency and extending the life of your tires.
Underinflated tires can increase rolling resistance,
causing your engine to work harder and consume more
fuel. Additionally, improperly inflated tires can lead to
uneven wear, reducing their lifespan.
By Paul Nyakeri
Taking care of your vehicle is not just about keeping
it looking good; it’s also about ensuring its longterm
durability and saving you money in the
process. Regular vehicle maintenance is key to
preventing costly breakdowns, extending the lifespan of
your car, and avoiding expensive repairs. By following
these 5 proven vehicle maintenance tips, you can drive
safe and save money in the long run.
Regular Oil Changes
One of the most crucial maintenance tasks for your
vehicle is regular oil changes. Your engine relies on
clean, properly lubricated oil to run smoothly and
efficiently. Over time, the oil in your engine breaks down
and becomes contaminated with dirt, debris, and other
particles. This can lead to engine damage and decreased
performance if not addressed.
To avoid these issues, it’s important to keep an eye
on your vehicle’s oil levels and replace it at the
recommended intervals. Consult your car’s owner’s
manual or speak with your trusted mechanic to
determine the appropriate oil change schedule for your
specific make and model. By staying on top of your oil
changes, you’ll ensure that your engine is running at its
Common Vehicle Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid
While it’s important to know what to do when it comes
to vehicle maintenance, it’s equally important to know
what not to do. Here are some common mistakes to
avoid:
1. Ignoring warning signs: If your check engine light
or any other warning light comes on, don’t ignore
it. These lights are there for a reason and could be
an early indication of a potential problem. Ignoring
warning signs can lead to more serious issues and
expensive repairs.
2. Neglecting routine maintenance: It’s easy to
overlook routine maintenance tasks, especially
when your car seems to be running fine. However,
neglecting these tasks can lead to decreased
performance, reduced fuel economy, and even
engine damage. Stick to your vehicle’s recommended
maintenance schedule to keep it in top shape.
3. Trying to DIY everything: While there are some
maintenance tasks that you can do yourself, such
as checking tire pressure or replacing wiper
blades, there are others that should be left to the
professionals. Trying to tackle complex repairs
without the necessary knowledge and tools can
result in further damage and safety risks.
34 Africa Automotive News l 2024

January-February issue l 2024
Make it a habit to check your tire pressure regularly, at
least once a month. Invest in a reliable tire pressure
gauge and refer to your vehicle’s recommended tire
pressure, which is usually found on a sticker inside the
driver’s side door jamb or in the owner’s manual. If the
pressure is too low, inflate the tires to the recommended
level. Don’t forget to also rotate your tires regularly to
ensure even wear and maximize their durability.
Regularly Inspecting and Replacing Filters
Air filters and oil filters play a crucial role in maintaining
your vehicle’s performance and fuel economy. Over time,
these filters can become clogged with dirt, dust, and
debris, restricting airflow and causing reduced power
and increased fuel consumption. Neglecting to change
these filters regularly can have a negative impact on
your engine’s performance and longevity.
Make it a part of your regular maintenance routine to
inspect and replace your air filters and oil filters as
needed. The frequency will depend on your driving
conditions, but a general rule of thumb is to replace air
filters every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or once a year, and
oil filters with every oil change. By keeping these filters
clean and in good condition, you’ll ensure that your
SHIFTING GEARS OR
RUNNING OUT OF STEAM?
Source: Secondary research, and MarketsandMarkets analysis
THE EVER-CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF HYDROGEN MOBILITY
In the rapidly evolving
transportation landscape, a
revolutionary shift is taking
place toward green mobility. As
the world plans to deal with the
challenges of climate change and
seeks sustainable alternatives to
traditional modes of transportation,
hydrogen emerges as a powerful
contender. The higher driving
range of FCEVs and growing
consumer interest make hydrogen
a potential alternative for zeroemission
mobility. Further, growing
investor participation, technological
developments by OEMs, and the
government’s plans for zeroemission
transport are expected to
make the market more lucrative.
This transition to hydrogen mobility
is already gaining momentum
globally, particularly in heavy-duty
transportation where FCEVs are
becoming increasingly popular.
The hydrogen mobility market in
2023 was full of ups and downs
across major markets. Most FCEV
sales are concentrated in four key
markets—China, South Korea, Europe,
and the United States. The FCEV
market in the Asia Pacific region fell
by 24.9% in 2023. China held a 49%
market share of FCEV vehicle sales
in the region driven by higher sales
of H2 buses and trucks. Further, the
FCEV market in Japan and South
Korea fell by more than 50% in
2023. This is primarily attributed to
the inadequate hydrogen charging
infrastructure and the increasing
cost of H2 fuel resulting from
disruptions in the hydrogen supply
chain, with vehicle options restricted
to the Hyundai Nexo or the Toyota
Mirai. Additionally, the performance
of BEVs have substantially improved
over the period, making the
competition tough for FCEVs.
In Europe, FCEV demand is mainly
led by Germany, France, the
Netherlands, and Switzerland.
Despite a sharp decline of over 70%
in the German market due to the
end of FCEV subsidies, the passenger
car segment remained the leader in
Europe, capturing 80% of the market
share. Simultaneously, there was a
4% growth in the market share of
hydrogen buses in the European
market as compared to 2022.
North America experienced
moderate growth in its FCEV market
in 2023, with the US maintaining a
major share of 94% in the region.
The hydrogen supply in California
has experienced significant
disruptions since August 2023. As
a result, a majority of hydrogen
stations in Southern California have
either gone offline or are operating
with reduced hours. Additionally,
hydrogen fuel prices rapidly
increased in 2023. These collective
challenges cast uncertainty on the
future viability of hydrogen fuel-cell
vehicles in the US.
Due to the rising emission levels,
January-February issue l 2024
increasing fuel prices, and the
limited availability of fossil fuels,
there has been a rising demand
for zero-emission alternative fuel
vehicles. This has been a significant
factor in the increasing demand for
hydrogen mobility during the last
few years. Alternative technologies
such as non-precious metal
catalyst-based PEM FC, hydrogen
fuel-cell packaged system modules,
and compact and lightweight
microstructures will increase the
range, reduce the cost, and increase
the vehicle’s overall efficiency.
Powertrain technology developments
are also expected to create new
opportunities for the hydrogenfuel
vehicle market. Further, new
hydrogen-based applications such
as FCHEVs and H2-ICEVs will create
new opportunities in the market.
Adoption of onsite H2 refueling and portable
H2 refueling technology
The establishment of a
comprehensive refueling
infrastructure system that addresses
all aspects of hydrogen fuel
production, transportation, and
utilization is necessary for the
expansion and sustainability of the
global hydrogen market. A robust
hydrogen infrastructure will enhance
operational efficiency, diminish enduser
expenses, and consequently,
stimulate increased adoption.
Nevertheless, prevailing challenges
arise from the limited accessibility
of hydrogen refueling stations,
posing obstacles to the scalability of
hydrogen-based transportation. The
shift to onsite hydrogen generation
and the adoption of portable
hydrogen refueling technology
represent significant advancements
in this challenging hydrogen
infrastructure landscape, addressing
both economic and environmental
concerns. This transition is
particularly crucial in North America,
where the number of fixed hydrogen
refueling stations has shown slowed
growth.
Onsite hydrogen generation, which is
carried out by electrolyzer processes,
offers a sustainable solution by
producing hydrogen at the station
location. This approach eliminates
the costs associated with hydrogen
fuel transport and lowers energy
losses due to simplified processes.
This method also allows for the
integration of renewable energy
sources, such as wind or solar
power, enabling the production of
green hydrogen. Similarly, leading
hydrogen providers such as Linde,
Nikola, and Air Products have
recognized the potential of portable
hydrogen refueling options. Portable
refueling technology is especially
advantageous in regions where fixed
infrastructure deployment may face
challenges or delays.
