The Word on the Street
The Broadway musical
Bonnie & Clyde will open at
Haddonfield Plays & Players on
Fri Mar 8 and run thru Sat Mar 23.
haddonfield.today | 3
If you had a leading role in a
Broadway musical, what part
would you play? And why?
DEBORAH
GARWOOD of
Haddonfield says
she’d like to play the
title role in ‘Gypsy.’
“Ethel Merman had
such a big voice and
such a commanding
stage presence,” says
Deborah. “A truly
iconic role.”
GINA ROMANO of
Mickelton identifies
with Roxy Hart in
‘Chicago.’ “She knew
how to orchestrate
a desired outcome,”
says Gina. “She
would have made
a great real estate
agent.”
Pittsgrove’s
NICK VICKERS
can see himself as
Jean Valjean in ‘Les
Miserables.’ “He was
a good man who did
what he had to do
for his family,” says
Nick. “A truly noble
character.”
Pine Hill’s GINA
COPPOLA didn’t
hesitate: “I’d play the
part of Nala in ‘The
Lion King,’” she says.
“I loved that little lion
so much I named my
first puppy after her.
A Rottweiler!”
CARRIE VICKERS of
Pittsgrove says she
adored the character
(Sandy) that Olivia
Newton-John played
in ‘Grease.’ “The
outfits, the hair, the
music, the lyrics, the
dancing ... ‘You’re the
One that I Love!’”
RYAN PHILLIPS of
Moorestown says
he’ll never be a rock
musician, “so I might
as well play one on
Broadway.” Who,
specifically? “I’d be
Bruce Springsteen
in ‘Springsteen on
Broadway’ or Billy
Joel in ‘Movin’ Out.’”

Chicago comes to Haddonfield
› Members of the Memorial High School Drama Club will “Razzle Dazzle” the
town with their upcoming production of Chicago: Teen Edition.
The play is a satirical Broadway classic that has fame, fortune, and jazz at its
core. “A show becomes a classic when the themes can be constantly related to
today’s age,” says director Ava Kepple. “The students have a different grasp on
fame now, with media rapidly evolving. Seeing them dissect 1920s Americana,
tackle the intense style of [choreographer and dancer Bob] Fosse, and belt out
prominent songs will give the audience a true Broadway experience.”
Performances are scheduled for Fri Mar 8, Sat Mar 9, Fri Mar 15 and Sat
Mar 16 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee will be presented at 2pm on Sun Mar 10.
Tickets – $15 general admission ($12 for students and seniors) – can be
As Haddonfield continues the months-long process
of updating its borough Master Plan, professionals from
the Philadelphia-based Pennoni consultancy met with
members of its municipal land use boards to solicit their
feedback on four key areas of the study.
At Tuesday night’s special meeting, members of
the borough Planning and Zoning Boards, Historic
Preservation Commission, and general public discussed
how the Haddonfield master plan update will consider
issues of resiliency, housing diversity, downtown
economic vitality, and traffic circulation.
Respectively, those elements concern:
• The capacity of the borough to withstand the effects
of climate change in the coming decade
• How to address unmet needs in its housing inventory
• Ways to fortify and improve the viability of the local
business district
• How to support safer, more efficient modes of travel
for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists.
from the guidance established by the updated ... n
One borough,
one book
› In April, the Public
Library and The Haddon
Fortnightly will host a
month-long community
literary initiative to
celebrate and explore
the book Clara and
Mr. Tiffany, a work of
historical fiction by
Susan Vreeland.
Behind the scenes
at the Tiffany glass
company, Clara Driscoll
is responsible for
conceiving and designing
nearly all of the leadedglass
lamps for which
Tiffany becomes famous.
The wrinkle? Tiffany
has a strict policy of
not employing married
women. Clara yearns for
love and companionship
and must decide what
makes her happiest: the
professional world of her
hands or the personal
world of her heart.
On the agenda:
• Mon Apr 8 at 1pm at
the Haddon Fortnightly:
Food historian Judith
Krall-Russo will present
a program on Gilded Age
foods.
• Thu Apr 11 at 6:45pm:
A discussion of Clara
and Mr. Tiffany at the
Fortnightly.
• Wed Apr 17 at 3:30pm:
• Tue Apr 23 at
At the Markeim: Two Giannottis
(father and daughter)
› The opening reception for an exhibition of
paintings, sculptures, and relief art of John Giannotti
and the nature photography of his daughter Keara
Giannotti will be held at the Markeim Arts Center on
Sat Mar 9 from 7 to 9:30pm.
All are welcome.
John Giannotti is best known in Haddonfield as
the sculptor of Haddy, the downtown dinosaur.
More widely, he is known as professor emeritus at
Rutgers University, where he served as Fine Arts
chair in Camden and director of Junior Year Abroad
in Italy.
John Giannotti’s paintings and sculptures are in
public and private collections worldwide, including
bronze monuments of Madame Curie and Walt
Whitman at Soka University in Japan. Castings of
Walt Whitman also are installed in the cities of the
poet’s birth and death: Huntington NY and Camden.
In addition to Haddy, John has donated his
services to create several works locally, including
The Little Artist sculpture at Tatem School, the Rosie
Hymerling mural at Tatem, and The Last Buttonwood
relief painting at the Public Library. He has served
as a consultant and board member for the Markeim
and the Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust.
Keara Giannotti is a naturalist and the founder/
director of Camp Creek Run, a nonprofit 50-acre
camp and nature preserve in Marlton, dedicated to
connecting children with the natural world.
As an environmental educator, she embraces
nature study as both a science and an art form. Her
goal with nature photography is not only to capture
the beauty of the subject, but to create composed,
descriptive pictures that document intimate, macro
details of plants, animals, and fungi to be used as
reference to deepen her understanding, and share it
with others.
Music at the reception will be provided by
Reasonable Volume (Shandon Willey and Donte
Goldston).
The show – titled “Generations: A Father/
Daughter Exhibition” – will run thru Fri Apr 12.
