International Mother Language Day
Celebrations for International Mother Language Day
were held recently at the Redgum Function Centre in
Wentworthville. The event saw many community members
come together to celebrate the rich cultural diversity in
Cumberland. With the range of stalls, demonstrations and
activities, there was something for everyone. There are over
90 different languages spoken by our community, so it was really great to
see that being embraced and celebrated.
Asbestos in NSW – protecting our communities
The NSW Government has established an Asbestos Taskforce to support
the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA’s) investigation into recent
findings of asbestos in mulch. The Government’s number one priority is
“contact tracing” down the complex supply chain, and then facilitating
testing, reporting and management of any positive results. For more
LOCAL NEWS
Council calls for delay to reforms
ELLIE BUSBY
The State Government’s plan to speedily
boost housing supply has seen
Parramatta Council call for a two-year
deferment, with Councillors saying the local
area is already “doing the heavy lifting” to
address the housing crisis.
The latest City of Parramatta Council meeting
saw the NSW Government’s proposed
planning controls to create more low- and
mid-rise housing take centre stage.
Under these new reforms, the total potential
capacity created from both low- and mid-rise
development across the Local Government
Area (LGA) is nearly 80,000 dwellings.
According to Council documents, if just
half of these dwellings were actually built, it
would be equal to an additional 105,000 new
residents.
This theoretical capacity equates to a whopping
21 per cent of the 376,000 dwellings the
State Government is committed to delivering
by 2029, the report said.
At the meeting, Council approved the
submission to the Department of Planning,
Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI), which
asked for a two-year deferred commencement
to enable Council to pursue programmed
solutions.
Labor Councillor Cameron Maclain said
he supports the NSW Government trying to
achieve greater housing supply and diversity,
but that it’s important Council also has
enough time to work through the changes
sensibly.
“Parramatta Council, as indicated in the
Housing has become a key issue in Parramatta. Generic stock image.
reports, has a great track record of delivering
housing stock, we’re already at 160 per cent of
our targets,” Maclain said.
“I think we’ve earnt something here with
regard to showing that we can deliver housing
stock and we should be given a degree of
autonomy associated with that.”
He said Parramatta has already experienced
significant housing growth compared to other
areas of Sydney.
“I applaud the staff for their efforts in putting
together such a pragmatic and engaging
submission that really shows us as being a
Council that’s doing the heavy lifting in western
Sydney,” he told the Chamber.
“We’ve got places like Kuring-Gai resting
on their laurels while Parramatta is already
suffering growing pains associated with
extensive growth.
“We’ve reached our targets, we’ve exceeded
them, so please give us the time in order to
work through these things in a sensible and
pragmatic fashion to ensure that we don’t
damage our suburbs.”
The new controls would allow manor
houses, terraces and townhouses to be built
on R2 zoned land within 800m of a station or
local centre, something the Parramatta LEP
currently does not allow.
Apartment buildings up to six-storeys would
be able to be built within 400m of stations and
town centres, and up to three-storeys within
400-800m of stations or town centres in R3
and R4 zones.
Our Local Community Councillor Michelle
Garrard also spoke in favour of the Council’s
submission for a two-year deferral, but
slammed the NSW Government’s plan to
increase housing supply.
“In all aspects of this reform and what’s
being put out there, regardless of whether
your Parramatta or the North Shore, it isn’t
adequate, not enough detail has gone in,” she
said.
“I genuinely feel that the lack of information
and the lack of advice the State Government
has taken on from our staff is really disappointing.
“The impact this is going to have on housing
in our local areas is going to be massive, in
addition to the impact on our heritage and
special character areas if we’re not able to get
the deferral that staff are asking for.”
Independent Councillor Georgina Valjak
raised concerns over a lack of infrastructure.
“My biggest concern is increasing all of this
density and I’ve not seen anywhere, where is
the infrastructure to support this?” she asked
the Chamber.
“Where is the extra 20 per cent in open
space? In schools?”
Along with the submission, Council will also
seek a meeting with Minister for Planning
Paul Scully and Ron Hoenig, the Minister for
Local Government.
housing reforms? Let us know at news@
Eels must bounce back into Finals
You can only promise so much and deliver
so little for so long.
Eventually, it catches up with you.
The new NRL season begins for the Eels this
weekend, with a clash against old foes the
Bulldogs at CommBank Stadium.
After the harshest of reality checks last year,
it’s no secret the Eels need to win.
Last week’s column about addressing the
housing crisis – and urging the Minns government
to improve its draft policy – generated
strong feedback. Several approved of the demand
that tree canopy targets be enforced as
part of any relaxation of rules around neighbourhood
development. So many families
flocked to this region because they were attracted
to our garden suburbs, Australian flora
and fauna, and the connection with nature.
One reader, a longtime Carlingford resident,
wrote to me that she “plants another tree every
time a developer decides to chop one down”.
One of the most thought-provoking responses
I received highlighted another angle entirely.
“I would like to see a comment about
providing for mature-age women as a demographic
significantly at risk of homelessness.
There’s a lot of women in their fifties and sixties
couch surfing or sleeping in cars. An acknowledgement
would be useful”.
I’ve emphasised how our current housing
debate needs to broaden beyond younger
people seeking to ascend the ladder. It’s time
to acknowledge that a safe, affordable home is
essential for people at any life stage.
A NSW parliamentary inquiry 18 months ago
found that an older person aged over 55 is the
surprising new face of homelessness in NSW.
But increasingly, there is also a hidden, gendered
component, challenging our stereotypical
notion of the male rough sleeper.
Between 2011 and 2016, there was a startling
31 per cent jump in the number of homeless
women over 55. The 2021 census showed a
Life & Style.........................................19-22
In fact, Brad Arthur’s side needs to have a
strong start to the season to deliver legitimate
hope to their fans and not just hot air.
Arthur will be under extraordinary pressure
if the Eels are on track to miss the Finals for a
second straight year, especially after so much
hope surrounded the team following the 2022
Grand Final run.
further six per cent rise – with this cohort now
totalling 7,325 out of a national homeless population
of roughly 120,000.
While no calculation can ever be completely
precise, official definitions of homelessness
now extend to those one step away. This includes
people experiencing extreme housing
stress or insecurity – perhaps in inadequate,
overcrowded or short-tenure private rentals,
community housing or house-sitting among
family and friends.
The structural issue for older women involves
having been the primary caregiver for
much of their adult life, sacrificing the ability
to independently earn income and generate
asset wealth. Some may have been employed
in lower remunerated industries such as
childcare, hospitality or retail. They may have
shuttled between part-time and casual work.
By the mid-fifties, turbulent life changes can
include relationship breakdown, domestic violence,
the death of a spouse, as well as other
complex health and psychosocial needs. It’s a
hidden epidemic: a cohort facing the rest of
their life with lower savings, superannuation
and facing mature-age discrimination in a labour
market where they are expected to adapt
their skills. In Parramatta and Cumberland,
linguistic and cultural barriers complicate the
picture and ability to access support services.
Add to that skyrocketing rents, forcing people
to dip into whatever extra they have. Anglicare
research shows that only about one
per cent of rental listings in Australia can be
afforded by people on the age pension.
Parramatta simply must play Finals football
this year or it’ll be considered an absolute failure
of a season.
You can’t have the likes of Clint Gutherson
and Mitch Moses in your team and not make
the eight.
Enjoy the new footy season. It’s the best roller
coaster in town.
The hidden crisis in housing debate
Society is imbued with the notion that young
people should be the highest priority for investment.
Organisations like Youth off the
Streets do great work. However, there is a real
shortfall in specialist homelessness services
for older Australians, particularly women.
The Australian Housing Urban Research Institute
projected that 440,000 households aged
over 55 will need affordable housing by 2031,
a 78 per cent increase in unmet demand since
2016. Governments can rezone and incentivise
private construction all they like. However,
if developers refuse to build, or the pace of
approvals continues to lag, public provision of
an adequate supply of affordable, appropriate
housing remains the ultimate safety net.
There are wider economic issues at play –
including an urgency to develop new policies
tackling financial insecurity among women
at retirement age who have not accumulated
enough super.
But we should be exploring the option of
reserving subsets of social housing for those
at risk of mature-age homelessness, including
women. The NSW Parliamentary inquiry
recommended lowering the age for “elderly
priority” public housing from 80 to 55. Special
protections such as relocation allowances
could also be targeted at older renters, evicted
through no fault of their own.
A growing homelessness crisis is the inevitable
result of policies that fail to build enough
social housing, free up vacant home capacity
or incentivise overseas investors. Increasingly,
its face is female.
LOCAL NEWS
Parramatta’s “green spine”: New
stunning $21m plans revealed
ELLIE BUSBY
Plans for the $21 million
Civic Link – a pedestrian
boulevard set to become the
“green spine” of Parramatta – have
been revealed.
City of Parramatta has given the
green light for the major plans to
proceed to public exhibition at the
latest meeting.
A long-held aspiration for the City
of Parramatta, the Civic Link project
would see the creation of a green,
culturally activated pedestrian
spine connecting four central city
blocks.
The first block is Parramatta
Square, with the Sydney Metro West
to become the second block once
completed.
The third block is the Civic Link,
which will run north-south along
Horwood Place from George
Street to Phillip Street, connecting
Parramatta Square to the fourth
block – Powerhouse Parramatta.
Designs for the city-shaping
project include a green spine of new
trees and garden planting offering
shade and pockets of nature to
explore and a ribbon of mixed-use
seating and activations for opportunities
to meet, engage and play.
The existing pedestrian footpaths
will also be widened to create
boulevards, with accessible eastwest
bridges across the gardens to
create immersive green spaces to be
established as well.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor
Pierre Esber said the Civic Link will
transform the heart of Parramatta.
“This is part of our long-held
vision for Civic Link, providing a
vibrant spine that connects our
community to transport networks
and cycleways between Parramatta
Square in our CBD and Powerhouse
Museum by the river,” Esber said.
“Our public spaces offer workers,
visitors and residents a social place
to gather together, celebrate culture
and enjoy nature.
“We’ve seen this with the 365,000
visitors at Parramatta Square each
month and its potential as a social
precinct, activation and event space
and destination to explore.”
Councillor Kellie Darley also
celebrated this milestone in the
project’s development.
“This is quite significant, the Civic
An artist’s impression of the multi-million dollar Civic Link project.
Link has been talked about for
probably a decade, I believe, so it’s
quite a significant milestone that
we’re at in terms of going on public
exhibition,” she said.
“It’s obviously a tricky project in
terms of the different blocks and
coordinating the delivery of those.”
Anticipated to be completed in
2026, the project has received $10.5
million in funding from the NSW
Government as part of the Accelerated
Infrastructure Fund.
A rollout of innovative infrastructure
with integrated lighting, CCTV,
environmental sensors, dynamic
signage, public WIFI and recharge
points will also be installed as
part of the Civic Link to keep the
community safe, the Council said.
The draft concept plans will go
on public exhibition from early
March.
Following the public exhibition,
further community consultation
will also be undertaken before the
design is finalised.
World-leading breakthrough
$134.5 million manufacturing facility at Westmead grows to commercial scale
ELLIE BUSBY
Westmead’s $134.5 million
“world-leading” viral vector
manufacturing facility will grow
to commercial-scale – with the NSW Government
saying the move will put the state at the
forefront of technology.
A key component of many cell and gene
therapies, viral vectors are increasingly being
used to treat cancer, diseases and infections.
Viral vector technology uses viruses that are
harmless to humans to carry genetic therapies
to the target organs and systems that
cause significant human diseases.
By establishing a commercial company
with a responsive operating model the NSW
Government said it will provide a strong base
for the long-term success of the Viral Vector
Manufacturing facility.
Speaking at the Westmead Innovation
Centre, Minister for Health Ryan Park said
the investment in the facility will have real life
changing benefits for people suffering from
genetic diseases, cancers and viral infections.
“These therapies are expanding rapidly,
targeting more and more genetic diseases,
cancer and infections – significantly increasing
the number of patients who can and will
benefit from viral vectors,” he said.
Stage one of the facility is operational for
use in gene therapy research, with the first
Stage one of the Westmead facility is currently operational for use in gene therapy research.
clinical trial anticipated to commence in 2025
using vectors from the facility.
Stage two of the facility is currently under
construction and once completed will provide
NSW with a commercial-scale viral vector
manufacturing facility capable of meeting the
growing demand for viral vectors.
Completion of construction works is
expected by the end of 2024, with Good
Manufacturing Practice certification to follow
soon after.
The company is to be registered as Viral
Vector Manufacturing Facility Pty Ltd. It will
manufacture the vectors and supply them to
specialised healthcare staff, who will deliver
the therapies to patients.
CEO of the Childhood Dementia Initiative
Megan Maack, whose children live with
Sanfillipo Syndrome – a rare and incurable
genetic childhood dementia – welcomed the
news.
“Almost 11 years ago when my children were
ages two and four, they were both diagnosed
with Sanfilippo syndrome, a form of childhood
dementia. It’s a condition so devastating,
it still takes my breath away today over a
decade later,” she said.
“We’re constantly hearing about the technological
advances and the potential miracle of
advanced therapeutics like gene therapy, so
why has so little progress been made for this
group of devastating genetic conditions?
“Well, one of the big reasons is lack of infrastructure
and the ability to develop clinical
grade viral vectors quickly and at scale. And
that’s the very thing the viral vector manufacturing
facility will be set up to do.”
Maack said she’s hopeful the new facility
will give families like her own immediate
access to more significant treatment options
in the future.
“It means a significant roadblock has been
removed for clinical trials and for research
and ultimately that will lead to treatments
improved quality and quantity of care of life
for children like mine, and perhaps one day
even a cure,” she added.
LOCAL NEWS
Tax cuts get green light
Amendments sail through Parliament with changes to begin from July 1
Labor’s much talked about Stage 3 tax
cuts will go ahead in their amended
form after passing the Senate last
Tuesday night.
It means that from July 1, Parramatta locals
will have more money in their pocket.
The 19 per cent tax rate will reduce to 16
per cent (for incomes between $18,200 and
$45,000), while the 32.5 per cent tax rate
reduces to 30 per cent (for incomes between
$45,000 and the new $135,000 threshold).
The threshold above which the 37 per cent
tax rate applies increases from $120,000 to
$135,000 and the threshold above which the
45 per cent tax rate applies increases from
$180,000 to $190,000.
“Every Australian taxpayer will receive a tax
cut this year – not just some,” Prime Minister
Anthony Albanese said.
“Our tax cuts are good for middle Australia,
good for women, good for helping with costof-living
pressures, good for labour supply
and good for the economy.
“Labor’s tax cuts are not the beginning of
our actions on cost-of-living – and they will
not be the end.
“They fit together with everything we are
doing to build a stronger economy across the
board.”
Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the tax cuts
were now “locked in”, as Labor pushed the
marketing line of the changes being specifically
“cost-of-living tax cuts”.
“With real wages increasing, Australians are
earning more, and now they will get to keep
more of what they earn, because of our bigger
tax cuts for more taxpayers,” he said.
“This is a big win for working families, a
big win for women and a big win for middle
Australia.
“We want Australians to earn more and keep
more of what they earn and our bigger tax
cuts for more taxpayers will help make that
happen.”
Despite the tax cuts – including Albanese’s
changes to what was originally proposed by
the Coalition – having widespread public
support, the Opposition still wasn’t happy this
week.
“My thoughts are with the people around
Australia who are watching their Prime
Minister whoop with glee about a $15 a week
measure that doesn’t even start until July,”
Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley told
Sky News.
“Meanwhile, costs are rising, children’s
expenses, grocery expenses, electricity
expenses, fuel expenses, and this is all that
their weak Prime Minister can actually
produce for them, and then think that it’s
enough.
“So times are tough for Australians
and businesses.”
The Coalition’s original stage three
tax cuts would have also applied from
July 1.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
“Cheap political stunt”
Councillors vote to ban drag story time events from Cumberland Council facilities
ELLIE BUSBY
Cumberland Council has
backflipped on its decision
to support potential drag
story time to children, with the
events now banned – but some
have labelled the move as a “cheap
political stunt”.
Chaos erupted at the latest Council
meeting, which saw protesters
against drag story time flood the
public gallery in the hundreds, as
barbs flew across the Chamber.
In last week’s edition, Parra News
reported that the local Council
voted against a motion to prevent
drag story time events for children
taking place across the local area.
However, the latest meeting saw
Councillors move another motion
on the matter with an amendment,
which prevents Council from
holding any drag story time events
or from accepting any request from
LGNSW or any other external body
to do so.
This time, the motion passed
successfully.
The decision comes despite
Cumberland Council confirming
there have never been any drag
A drag queen reads children’s stories at a drag story hour in Canada.
story time events held in the past.
There were also none planned for
the future.
Councillor Joseph Rahme spoke in
favour of banning the events.
“Being an Australian with heritage
from the Middle East, it qualifies
me to make the next comment. I
would like to remind them how
lucky each and every one of us is to
be living in this beautiful country of
ours, unlike many Middle Eastern
countries where this behaviour is
ultimately outlawed and punishable
by death,” he said about drag
story time.
“My issue is not the LGBTQI
community, I love them all, every
single one of them, I love them with
all my heart, let me make that clear.
“My issue is sexualising and
exposing kids to a certain school
of thought at a very young age and
making an impression on them
when their minds are not fully
developed.”
Backing Rahme, Councillor Eddy
Sarkis said banning drag story
time for children is something he
“strongly and firmly” believes in.
“Any person of principle would
support this motion, I would not
have my kids subjected at an early
age to people who may be themselves
confused with their own
sexuality, so why would I allow any
other child to sit with these people,”
he added.
“This is to protect our children,
this is to protect the future of
Cumberland, the future of our
existence.”
Councillor Steve Christou, who
seconded the amendment moved
by Councillor Paul Garrard, said
in a statement following the meeting
that it should not require a
“mammoth community outcry” to
ensure the ban is passed.
But some Councillors have
labelled the move to ban potential
events as an “election stunt” ahead
of this year’s poll.
“I would like to state from the
outset that there has never been a
drag story time held in Cumberland
Council and that no one here, either
myself or the Councillors, has ever
proposed one and will never intend
to do so,” Councillor Mohamad
Hussein said.
“This has been manufactured
specifically to upset people in our
community. I can see people here
tonight that have been deeply upset
by this made-up story, by this lie, by
a particular Councillor.”
Deputy Mayor Ola Hamed also
called it a lie designed to “confuse
and frighten” the community.
“People here in the gallery tonight,
allow me to tell you that I feel you
have been misled, that you have
been lied to with this fear-mongering,
grand-standing campaign,” she
continued.
“You’ve been dragged down
here not to stop story time, that’s
not happening as you have heard
tonight with your own ears, but to
help [Councillor] Steve Christou
and Councillor Rahme be re-elected
at the next election. This is nothing
but a cheap political stunt.”
Mayor Lisa Lake, who opposed
the motion, said the ban sends a
“harmful message” to members of
the LGBTQIA+ community.
Women to be celebrated
International Women’s Day events to be held in Parramatta this Friday, March 8
ELLIE BUSBY
Parramatta will celebrate
women at a host of different
events across the city this
International Women’s Day (IWD),
but one local Councillor has questioned
why the same isn’t being
done for men.
Celebrated annually around the
world, IWD recognises women’s
achievements while also raising
awareness about discrimination
and progress towards gender parity.
To mark the occasion, City of
Parramatta will be hosting the City
of Parramatta IWD 2024: Invest In
Western Sydney Women event at
Parramatta Town Hall for invited
community members and Council
staff. Events at PHIVE and Riverside
Theatre, as well as online, will also
run.
However, Our Local Community
Councillor Michelle Garrard, who
is supportive of the IWD events,
also queried why the same efforts
weren’t being extended to International
Men’s Day, which is held on
November 19.
“I don’t want to take it away from
the women but, you know, men have
Michelle Garrard has called for more support for
International Men’s Day ahead of International
Women’s Day this Friday.
things that need to be celebrated
too,” she said.
“There’s a lot going on in the man
world that needs to be acknowledged.
“I want to celebrate international
women’s day with them, as long as
we do one for the men.”
But Labor Councillor Cameron
Maclean hit back, saying that
women have been prejudiced
against throughout history in a way
that is incredibly different to men.
“It’s a scourge that men commit
suicide at the rates that they do and
it’s awful that there is such severe
rates of mental illness among men
but their plight throughout history
is not at all in any equivalence to
that of women,” he said.
“For thousands of years women
have been prejudiced against in a
Women will be celebrated in Parramatta this International
Women’s Day.
way incredibly different to men.
There’s still so much more work
to do and the idea that we need
to elevate the status of men in the
same regard as we elevate the status
of women on International Women’s
Day, I think, is absurd.”
This year’s IWD theme is ‘Count
Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate
Progress’, which examines the pathways
to greater economic inclusion
for women and girls everywhere.
Sharing her own experience with
the gender pay gap, Independent
Councillor Kellie Darley said it’s
very important to continue to advocate
for equality.
“I know when I first started working
in Australia I was employed in a
role, which I grew, so the organisation
then employed someone else, a
man, from overseas actually, in New
Zealand,” she told the Chamber.
“It turns out over a few drinks I
found out he was earning 15 grand
more than me, so quite a significant
pay difference.
“For me, frankly, everyday is
International Men’s Day because
men generally still get treated very
differently to women.”
City of Parramatta will also recognise
the first female alderman on the
Council, Anne Walker, who was also
the youngest at 22-years-old back in
1971. Councillor Lorraine Wearne is
also set to be commemorated as the
first women in both Parramatta and
the region of Sydney to be elected
as Lord Mayor from 2000-2001, and
again in 2011-2012.
Taylor Swift may have already left
Australia following her sold-out
concerts, but her impact on businesses
in western Sydney won’t be so easy to
shake off.
Over the last two weeks Sydney Olympic
Park has been awash with glitter and cowboy
boots as 320,000 Swifties descended on Accor
Stadium.
But it wasn’t just the fans who were
enchanted by the superstar’s visit, it was the
local businesses as well.
Business Western Sydney’s Executive Director
David Borger told Parra News that Swift
has provided an “injection of fun and money”
into the local economy.
“Judging by the number of white cowboy
boots I saw in Parramatta on the weekend, I
think the local hotels were doing very well out
of the Taylor Swift phenomenon,” he said.
“Taylor Swift only played Melbourne and
Sydney… and when that happens a lot of
people come from regional NSW and stay in
Parramatta and stay in Sydney Olympic Park,
it’s more affordable and closer to the venue.
“So even places like Westfield, the local
retail, would have had a bump, and the hope
is, as more of these mega acts come to town
we can put on more of a show and keep people
for longer.”
Accor Chief Operating Officer Adrian
Williams said Swift’s four back-to-back
concerts have been the biggest event for Accor
hotels since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
“Events like this support jobs and investment
in hotels right across the city,” he said.
New data from NAB revealed accommodation
around the Sydney CBD was up 72 per
cent during Swift’s concerts, with bars and
pubs up by 49 per cent and general merchandise
stores up a whopping 117 per cent.
NAB Executive for Business Metro and
Specialised Julie Rynski said Swift’s concerts
were an incredible economic boost for
Sydney’s economy.
“From hotel rooms to heaving restaurants,
merchandise stands to packed pubs, her four
Sydney gigs created a buzz in the city not seen
since before the pandemic,” she said.
“The cultural and economic impact of her
seven, sold out, Melbourne and Sydney shows
will last long in the collective memory, while
businesses across both capital cities can be
very thankful for the ‘Taylor effect’, which has
helped spark a late summer spending spree.
“There’s no doubt businesses and consumers
have had a difficult last 12 months or so,
but despite this, it’s clear people are continuing
to carefully evaluate and prioritise their
spending on the things or experiences they
truly value.”
Swift even received high praise from Prime
Minister Anthony Albanese, who called her a
The Chamber represents predominantly
small and medium sized businesses in the
“very welcome visitor” in a recent interview.
“Look, I think at a time where there’s so much
turmoil in the world, one of the reasons why
Taylor Swift’s tour has been such a success is
it’s so positive, it’s so uplifting, and that is her
message,” he said.
What do you want for your business?
bringthebling.com.au
This is the big question
that often comes up,
especially as we kick
off a new year – you know,
the whole goal setting and
vision board drill. Some
folks have a clear vision,
and answering these questions
is a breeze. But for
others, it can feel like diving
into a sea of options and
drowning in the information
overload.
In a world where choices
seem endless, let’s flip the
script a bit.
How about asking yourself,
“What don’t you want for
your business?”
When you’re not entirely
sure where you’re headed,
knowing what you want to
avoid can act like a North
Star or a measuring stick.
It’s a way to make sure every
decision you make aligns
with steering clear of what
you don’t want.
Let’s break it down. If
you’re sick of pouring money
into your business without
seeing anything in return,
then it’s time to dig into your
pricing, keep a tight grip on
your money flow, and maybe
brush up on your marketing
know-how.
Once you’ve got your to-do
list, don’t overwhelm yourself.
Pick the top three things
that need your attention
ASAP and are most relevant
to your business this year.
We’ve all been there – a
never-ending list of tasks,
trying to do it all and then
wondering why it feels like
nothing’s getting done. Been
there, done that.
At the start of this year, I
drew a triangle. The tip is for
my faith, the left side is for
my family, the right side is
for my business, and smack
in the middle is me. I jotted
down one thing to focus on
for each of these areas this
year.
Remember, it’s not about
doing everything. It’s about
figuring out the top three
things that matter most this
year and rocking them. Keep
it simple, keep it focused,
and make this year count.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
This week Uranus (your ruling planet)
squares Venus and Mars, which will stir
up your impulsive, restless, rebellious
side. So slow down Aquarius – otherwise
you could find yourself headed for an
argument or an accident. With Venus
and Mars both visiting your sign, you’ll
find the more you cooperate with others,
the more affection and abundance you’ll
attract. And the more proactive you are
about making positive changes, the
better your week will be.
The stars bless creative projects,
boost intuition, and help you get lost in
a fabulous fantasy novel or a favourite
romantic movie. With the Sun, New
Moon, Mercury, Saturn and Neptune all
illuminating your sign, you’re keen to
please others. But avoid the temptation
to say ‘yes’ to everyone and everything,
like a compliant doormat. You may find
you’ve bitten off more than you can
comfortably chew! Confidence is high on
the weekend so make the most of it.
The Mars/Uranus square could amp
up your impulsive, impatient, argumentative
side, especially involving
friends or finances. And relationships
look challenging, as loved ones are more
unpredictable than usual. With Venus
visiting your friendship and peer group
zone, strive to be more diplomatic. If you
can temporarily morph from a raging
ram to a gentle lamb, then life will be less
bumpy. Channel your fiery energy into
making a goal or dream come true.
This week the Venus/Uranus square
revs up your motivation and boosts your
Bullish bravado. But you could also feel
rather rushed and slightly unsettled.
Cool down and calm down! Aim to do
plenty of physical activity, so you can
channel your restless energy in pleasant
and productive ways. But being overly
proprietorial about a person or situation
will only lead to a fraction too much
friction. Strive to be less stubborn about
people, possessions and work.
Gregarious Geminis are clever communicators
but are you confident enough
for big time success? With no less than
eight planets (including the New Moon)
activating your career and aspirations
zones, a golden opportunity is waiting
in the wings. But you must grab it when
it appears, or it will promptly pass you
by. Monday and Tuesday favour original
ideas and innovative plans, whereas
Friday and Saturday are fabulous for
creative projects and spiritual pursuits.
Unpredictable Uranus could unsettle
a close relationship on Monday or
Saturday, especially if there are secret
agreements, trust issues or joint finances
involved. Then Sunday’s New Moon
activates your adventure zone, so you’re
in the mood to plan (and book?) weekend
getaways or work holidays for the rest of
the year. Mercury also moves into your
career zone so it’s time to amp up the
communication with colleagues, clients
and/or customers.
Have you been feeling like a tired
and listless Leo? This week – courtesy
of the restorative, transformative New
Moon – you’ll feel your mojo, motivation
and Lion’s roar returning. So find a
challenging project to direct your energy
into. The Sun, Mercury and Uranus also
encourage you to be more positive when
communicating with others. A sunny
smile and an encouraging comment will
get you a lot further than feisty fireworks
and theatrical foot-stamping!
The planets could generate a lucky
break involving a partnership, joint
venture, travel opportunity or educational
project. So get your ideas out
there as you inform and entertain others
with your mercurial mind. A major
relationship (of the romantic or platonic
variety) could go through a New Moon
metamorphosis. Do your best to air any
concerns in a compassionate way, as you
work through problems that have been
holding you back.
Laidback Librans love peace and
harmony! But they may be hard to find,
as unpredictable Uranus squares Venus
(your power planet) on Monday. So
expect upsets or surprises … perhaps
a disruptive partner, an unpredictable
friend or a rebellious child. Then
Sunday’s New Moon stimulates your
wellbeing zone, so it’s a wonderful weekend
to start a new diet, reboot an exercise
program or begin a meditation practice.
Remember – health is the true wealth.
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Uranus disrupts domestic harmony but
don’t let it disturb your equilibrium. The
secret to success is learning to let go, as
you keep what’s working in your life and
discard what isn’t. (But you may have to
lose a current battle in order to win the
long-term war.) Opportunities for New
Moon growth come from a loved one, as
you realise who has your best interests
at heart. It’s also a good time to express
your creative side and appreciate the
talents of others.
Being of service to others (with kindness
and compassion) brings much joy
and satisfaction. Plus take the time to
savour and enjoy the simple things in
your everyday life – like a kiss from a
child or a walk in the park. But avoid
making a rash, insensitive comment (in
person or online) that you later regret.
It’s a wonderful weekend to entertain at
home with a special meal, as the New
Moon stimulates your family zone.
Convivial conversation is a bonus.
The New Moon lights up your communication,
education and neighbourhood
zone, so it’s a fabulous week to focus,
plan, study, organise and strategise.
Especially involving partnerships, joint
ventures, and projects within your
local community. But double-check all
information that comes your way on
the weekend. Make sure someone isn’t
trying to steamroll you or pull the wool
over your eyes (particularly involving
friends and/or finances).
Bowral – home to brilliant tulip
a 90-minute drive from Sydney, and it makes
for the perfect weekend away.
Recently, my best friend and I took advantage
of the warm weather and headed south
for a few nights, where we stayed at the new
Park Proxi Gibraltar Bowral.
Park Proxi Gibraltar Bowral is Australia’s
first Park Proxi hotel from StayWell Hotel
group. Its design is equal parts rustic and
modern, with all of the sleek design features
you’d expect from premium accommodation
coupled with earthy colours and floor to
ceiling windows to make you feel at home in
the space.
The hotel features 77 generously sized rooms
and suites – we were lucky enough to stay
in an Executive Suite, complete with a bath
and walk in shower, comfortable bed, and a
balcony perfect to sit at for your morning tea.
However, some of the main highlights are
the amenities.
Harveys Bar is the perfect place for a drink.
Park Proxi Gibraltar Bowral boasts an indoor
18-hole golf course, which our balcony looked
onto.
The hotel’s food and beverage options are
also endless between Observatory Restaurant
and Harveys Bar.
Observatory Restaurant offers a truly elite
buffet breakfast, including all of your basics,
as well as an array of hot food including hash
browns and poached eggs, and a refrigerated
section with fruit, yoghurt and cheese. There’s
no better way to start the day!
For pre (or post) dinner drinks, Harveys Bar
is the perfect place to go, offering a diverse
drink menu featuring their signature dry
martinis, locally crafted beer, and a selection
of exquisite Australian wines. The place also
exudes warmth and homeliness, complete
with marble tabletops and a cosy fireplace.
During our stay, we were also treated to
dinner at Observatory Restaurant, serving up
a modern Australian à la carte menu celebrating
the Southern Highlands. With excellent
service and a menu with options for every
appetite, you won’t want to leave the hotel –
however I really recommend you do.
Given the beautiful weather, the
After this, we ventured to Artemis
As someone who’s not a massive
I really enjoyed the 2023 Artemis
We then finished the day off at Paste.
As far as accolades go, this place
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
Colour is key! The best products to
add some sparkle to your makeup
Whether it’s festival
season, The Eras
Tour, or Mardi Gras
that’s gotten you in the mood
to play with colour and
texture in your makeup,
this is your sign not to put
the glitter down!
Although the more natural,
no-makeup-makeup
look is still well and truly
in, there’s always a time
and place to have fun with
makeup. Whilst wearing
a sparkly, rainbow look
to work isn’t for everyone,
here are a few subtle ways
to incorporate colour into
your makeup routine, and
some products to make it
happen.
Eyeliner
Okay, I hear you, eyeliner
in general isn’t for everyone.
I had to do a perfect wing
almost on a weekly basis
for dance competitions in my
teens and the idea of doing it
today still makes me shudder.
But, if eyeliner is your thing,
using a statement colour or
graphic design can be one of
the easiest and most effective
ways of incorporating
something fun into your
makeup.
A good coloured eyeliner
can be hard to find, especially
because everyone has
their preferences in formula
and applicator. I would
recommend the Urban
Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye
Pencil, which has plenty of
matte and shimmer shades,
or the Mecca Max Zoom
Liner.
Eyeshadows
For a quick and easy way
to add something different
to your makeup look, a pop
of colour on the eyelid will
always win.
There are plenty of
eyeshadow palettes or single
shades to do this with – you
probably already have something
at home! But, if you’re
looking to invest in something
new, Mecca Max has just
come out with their Over The
Top Holographic Eyeshadow
Toppers. The three shades
come in a stack and range from
an everyday neutral shade to
a bright pink, and a stunning
green-gold.
If there’s a specific colour
scheme you think you’ll wear
regularly, look into smaller
palettes like Huda Beauty’s
Color Block Obsessions
Eyeshadow Palettes in Orange
& Purple and Blue & Green.
These beauties come with
matte and shimmer shades – 10
in nine pans – as well as
cake eyeliners which
are activated with
water.
Blush
One of my
favourite ways
to switch up my
makeup lately has
been using different
blush shades to match
my eyes each day.
Of course, the specific shades
you use will depend on your
skin tone, but for someone as
fair as me it’s possible to make
almost anything work with a
light hand, from baby pinks all
the way to reds and purples.
Nars has one of my favourite
blush formulas, and I generally
rotate between ‘Orgasm’ and
‘Amour’ for every day. But, if
you want to be more adventurous,
try the brilliant red
‘Exhibit A’ or berry shade ‘Sin’.
Lipstick
A bold lip will truly
never go out of
style.
If you’re looking
to add one to your
collection, MAC
makes one of my
favourite formulas
which also happens
to come in just about
every shade in the
rainbow. Or, add some subtle
sparkle to the lips with the
Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted
Lip Gloss in ‘Amber Sparkle’ or
‘Honey Diamond’.
Since 1975 Pancakes On The Rocks has been a Sydney favourite with restaurants at
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
VIKA AND LINDA
BACK ON STAGE
CASSIDY PEARCE
Despite debuting back in the ‘80s,
the last few years have been some
of the busiest for sister duo Vika
and Linda Bull.
In mid-2020 came their career-spanning
collection ‘Akilotoa’, followed
by gospel album, ‘Sunday (The Gospel According
To Iso)’ just a month later. In 2021,
they released their first album of new material
in nearly two decades, ‘The Wait’, before coming
out with their eighth studio album, titled
‘Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas!’ and their memoir,
No Bull in 2022.
According to the duo, it felt just as busy for
them as it did for fans.
“We just took it one day at a time – when
you’ve got a workload, I think that’s the only
way you can deal with it,” Linda said.
“It was a very productive three years, and it
was great fun. When you enjoy your work, it’s
not really work – we were just having a ball doing
it all.”
The period came along with plenty of highs,
with two of their albums landing in the number
two spot on the charts, and ‘Akilotoa’ earning
them their first ever number one – a ‘best
of’ that they were convinced no one wanted.
“To get that number one in our 50s, I was
very proud of that because of our longevity,
and just being in the industry for so long and
not quitting,” Vika said.
“There were many moments there where we
really wanted to pack it in, but we kept going
purely for the joy of singing.”
Heading into 2024, they’re kicking off a
brand-new venture in the form of a new tour,
‘An Evening with Vika and Linda’.
The tour will be bringing audiences a trio
show, with just their close collaborator and
producer Cameron Bruce on piano to create
a night more stripped back than ever before.
“He knows our repertoire and he knows how
we sing, and we wanted to just strip it right
back to the bare bones and just deliver songs
with the three of us,” Linda said.
However, with this comes a sense of vulnerability
for the singers, who will be leaning on
one another to put on the best show possible.
“You do feel completely naked. There is
nothing to hide behind, and that can be a very
stressful situation. If the nerves get the better
of you, your voice cracks and breaks and does
all sorts of weird things,” Vika said.
“I do think that it’ll be a great support,
though, having someone else there singing
with you.”
The show is set to have a special and unique
setlist, complete with new songs, and old
songs that have become new favourites.
“You tend to brush songs aside quickly when
you get a live set happening, you forget that
there’s a whole lot of songs that you did that
maybe if you just thought about them differently,
would come about in a better way,
which I think is what we’re finding with the
trio tour,” Linda said.
This includes debut album track ‘Love This
Time’, which was revamped as part of a Christmas
show last year after not being performed
since its release.
“We listened to it and thought, ‘The lyrics
are beautiful’, and then Cameron said, ‘How
about we just try it with piano?’, and it took on
a brand-new life, it was a completely different
song that we really enjoyed singing,” Vika said.
“The way it was recorded, it was great, but
it was a little daggy, and I think that’s why we
shied away from it, so then when Cameron
came in and turned it on its head, it became a
whole new thing.”
The show will be heading to Riverside Theatres
as part of Great Southern Nights.
“I think Australia needs to get behind their
artists a little bit more, and I think it’s great
that [Great Southern Nights] is doing that for
Australian acts,” Vika said.
‘An Evening with Vika and Linda’ will be on
at Riverside on Saturday, March 23. Tickets
are $68. Visit riversideparramatta.com.au.
COUNTRY
CORNER
Evans announces special project
Morgan Evans has announced he’ll release
a live album and concert film next month.
It’s a recording of his live shows at the
Sydney Opera House last year – part of the
‘Life Upside Down’ tour.
“I’m so stoked to share this little time
capsule for everyone who was there to relive,
and everyone that couldn’t be there to experience
for the first time,” Evans said.
It’ll be out on all the usual streaming
services, while physical copies can be
ordered from Evans’ website.
Chesney drops new music
Country music mainstay Kenny Chesney
(pictured above) has dropped a new track to
all the usual streaming services.
‘Thinkin’ Bout’ is available now.
“The hardest part of letting go, is actually
letting go,” Chesney said.
“All that chemistry, all that intimacy, all
that doesn’t need to be said is such a big
thing. Whatever’s wrong, obviously it’s
not gonna change. But it gets late, you get
thinking – and next thing you know, you’re
tumbling back into something that just can’t
be.
“I love this song, because it gets into that
space where you’re thinking about knowing
you shouldn’t do this, shouldn’t think
about that person, and that’s when maybe
the letting go can really start to happen no
matter how good it feels or how much you
make each other laugh.”
CMC Rocks just around the corner
American superstars Lainey Wilson,
Chris Young and Tyler Hubbard will jet into
Australia in the coming weeks ahead of the
CMC Rocks festival.
The festival is taking place at Willowbank
Raceway in Queensland from March 15 to 17
and also features the likes of Megan Moroney,
Chase Rice and Nate Smith on the bill.
PREVIEW
PREVIEW
Baghead
Dune: Part Two
1 hour, 35 minutes 2 hours, 46 minutes
Following the death of
her estranged father (Peter
Mullan), Iris (Freya Allan)
learns she has inherited a
run-down, centuries-old
pub. She travels to Berlin
to identify her father's body
and meet with The Solicitor
(Ned Dennehy) to discuss
the estate.
Little does she know,
when the deed is signed
she will become inextricably
tied to an unspeakable
entity that resides in the
pub's basement – Baghead
– a shape-shifting creature
that can transform into the
dead. $2,000 in cash for two
minutes with the creature
is all it takes for desperate
loved ones to ease their
grief. Neil (Jeremy Irvine),
who has lost his wife, is Iris'
first customer. Like her father,
Iris is tempted to exploit
the creature’s powers
and help desperate people
for a price. But she soon
discovers breaking the
two-minute rule can have
terrifying consequences.
Together with her best
friend Katie (Ruby Barker),
Iris must battle to keep control
of Baghead and figure
out how to destroy her, before
she destroys them.
The saga continues as
award-winning filmmaker
Denis Villeneuve embarks
on ‘Dune: Part Two’.
The big-screen epic continues
the adaptation of
Frank Herbert’s acclaimed
bestseller ‘Dune’ with returning
and new stars, including
Oscar nominee
Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya,
Oscar nominee Austin
Butler, Oscar nominee
Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista
and more.
‘Dune: Part Two’ will explore
the mythic journey of
Paul Atreides as he unites
with Chani and the Fremen
while on a path of revenge
against the conspirators
who destroyed his family.
Facing a choice between
the love of his life and the
fate of the known universe,
he endeavours to prevent a
terrible future.
TV NEWS
Ê As a newly converted ‘Frasier’ fan, I was
delighted to hear that the revival series has
won a second season. Paramount+ confirmed
the exciting news last week and we
should expect season two later this year. If
you haven’t seen the first season of the new
‘Frasier’ yet, do yourself a favour and check
it out – it’s very funny and features plenty of
cameos from past characters.
Ê Channel Nine have secured the rights to
broadcast the Melbourne Cup Carnival until
2029. Nine will broadcast all four days of the
Carnival – Derby Day, Melbourne Cup, Oaks
Day and Stakes Day – live and in high-definition
on the main channel and via 9Now. 10
broadcast last year’s race.
Ê This show was huge when I was fresh
out of high school 20 years ago and now it’s
coming back! ‘Ready Steady Cook’, which
was a staple of afternoon TV back in the early
to mid-2000s, will return with a brand-new
host in chef Miguel Maestre on Friday, March
8 on 10. Returning after more than a decade,
the rebooted cooking show showcases some
of the country’s best chefs, who will join
forces with everyday Aussie home cooks,
to prepare delicious dishes using only five
ingredients (and pantry supplies). The team
MARCH 20
X-MEN ‘97, DISNEY+
MARCH 8 7.30PM READY STEADY COOK, 10
who takes out the win after the strict 20-minute
cook time, will be decided by the live
studio audience. In the final round, our two
chefs will battle head-to-head in the ‘Chef’s
Challenge,’ where they will push culinary
boundaries in a 10-minute fast round. Catch
it from 7.30pm Friday!
Ê The new season of ‘Survivor’ is now airing
on 9GO! The first episode of the 46th season
of the US version premiered on Thursday
and is once again filmed in Fiji. You can catch
up via 9Now.
Ê Definitely one to create a reminder for,
new Stan drama series ‘The Tattooist of
Auschwitz’, starring Harvey Keitel and Melanie
Lynskey, will finally drop on Thursday,
May 2. The six-part limited drama series,
based on the international best-selling novel
by Heather Morris, is inspired by the real-life
story of Lali and Gita Sokolov, who met while
prisoners in the Auschwitz concentration
camp during the Holocaust of World War II.
Ê Comic book lovers rejoice! New Marvel
Animation series ‘X-Men ’97’ will stream
on Disney+ on Wednesday, March 20. The
10-part series revisits the iconic era of the
1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who
use their uncanny gifts to protect a world
that hates and fears them, are challenged
like never before, forced to face a dangerous
and unexpected new future. This looks super
cool and is certainly a throwback to the good
old days of comics!
Ê Four-part music doco ‘Thank You,
Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story’ will land
on Disney+ on Friday, April 26. Filmed in
February 2022, the series chronicles the US
rockers and its frontman Jon Bon Jovi as a
vocal injury threatens to bring everything to
a screeching halt.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
What you need to know
Rule changes, broadcast details and more: Your guide to the new NRL season
Here’s everything you need to know
about the exciting season of rugby
league ahead...
Rule changes
There’s only one significant change to the
rules this season.
If a team kicks the ball out on the full over
the touch line, or the ball fails to travel at least
10 metres forward in an attempt to contest a
restart from the goal-line, 20m line, or halfway
line, play will now restart with a play-theball
10 metres out from the line of the kick and
10 metres in from touch, rather than with a
penalty kick.
The change will give more incentive for
teams to attempt short kick-offs or drop-outs.
Broadcast
Channel Nine will continue to broadcast
matches live on Thursday night, Friday night
and Sunday afternoon during the season,
with additional games from time-to-time and
Saturday evening broadcasts over the last
few weeks of the season. Nine is the exclusive
home of State of Origin and the Grand Final.
Fox League and Kayo will broadcast every
game of the 2024 season, including the Finals.
The only games Fox won’t show are the three
State of Origin matches and the Grand Final.
‘NRL 360’ is already back on air.
Radio coverage will continue across 2GB,
ABC Radio, Triple M and SEN.
Adam Gee will go into 2024 as the game’s leading referee. Photo: NRL Photos.
make the big one. Brisbane is next at $4.50
followed by the Roosters at $9.00 and Souths
at $11.00.
If you think the Panthers will miss the Finals,
you’ll get $7.00 with the TAB. The Panthers are
also Minor Premiership favourites at $3.25.
As far as the Eels are concerned, they sit at
$21.00 with the TAB to win the Premiership
and $10.00 to make the Grand Final. You can
get $1.75 if you think the Eels will miss the top
Eels favourites in season opener
NATHAN TAYLOR
They finished last season
by beating the eventual
Premiers and they’ll be
hoping to kick their 2024 NRL
campaign off with a win over their
main arch-rivals.
When Parramatta does battle
with Canterbury-Bankstown this
Saturday evening at CommBank
Stadium, it’ll be a whopping 198
days since they last took the playing
field.
For many supporters, they
would’ve enjoyed the long layoff
after what was a disappointing
2023, while for the others they’ll be
desperate to see the club right the
wrongs from last year and get back
into the NRL Finals.
Not many pundits are giving
Parramatta a chance at breaking a
near 40-year Premiership drought
this season, but when the pressure
is off, that’s when the Eels usually
do the most damage.
In 2022, they were longshots to
make the Grand Final but they
ended up reaching the big dance
after a late-season surge of form.
Last season they were tipped by
some to go one better, but they
endured a roller-coaster year, which
J’maine Hopgood was a hit with the fans up in Queensland recently. Photo: NRL Images.
ultimately resulted in an unacceptable
10th place finish.
With Brad Arthur entering his 11th
season in charge of the Blue & Gold,
there’s perhaps no other coach in
the NRL under as much pressure to
deliver as the 49-year-old.
As for the team, the Eels offloaded
a truckload of talent at the end of
last season and will go into 2024
with the players they believe can get
the job done.
Two former Sea Eagles will join
Parramatta’s nest this season
in centre Morgan Harper and
backrower Kelma Tuilagi, while
a number of talented juniors are
knocking on the door of first grade
after strong performances in the
recent trials.
The Eels finished the Pre-Season
Challenge with a strong win over the
Gold Coast Titans 26-16 in Ipswich,
while they lost the previous week to
the Canberra Raiders 36-16.
Parramatta is expected to name
a near full strength line-up this
afternoon (Tuesday) ahead of their
opening round clash against the
Bulldogs on Saturday.
Winger Maika Sivo will miss the
first three matches of the season
after taking an early guilty plea in
response to a high tackle charge
from the win over the Titans. The
Fijian will be eligible for selection in
Round 4 against the Wests Tigers on
Easter Monday.
Bailey Simonsson and Ryan
Matterson are expected to play
despite injury concerns.
Tickets are still available for this
weekend’s clash, but with Canterbury
debuting a number of new
faces and being a crosstown rival,
the game is expected to be a sell-out
by kick-off.
