The Dubois County Museum began in Jasper in 1999. It soon outgrew its first location and moved to 2704 N. Newton Street (along U.S. 231 N) in the spacious home of a former wood factory. The Dubois County Museum calls itself one of the largest county museums in the state of <strong>Indiana</strong>, with over 50,000 square feet of display space and over 63,000 pieces in its collection (with over 10,000 pieces on display). You are invited to take a step back in time by viewing the exhibits on archaeology, German heritage, schools, religion, Memorial Hospital, wood manufacturing, sports, antique agricultural machinery and model trains. The museum salutes the military in an exhibit that features the many conflicts in which U.S. soldiers have fought. You can step into a complete German Log House that was moved and reassembled inside the museum, and you can view the Wildlife Adventure Exhibit Room that displays local taxidermy animals, pictures of area wildlife enthusiasts, and many of the animals taken from North America and Africa from the collection of Frank Fromme. You can stroll Main Street Dubois County and view the 17 rooms portraying life at the turn of the 19th century. Children can visit the hands-on Little Pioneers area that allows them to play in the one-room schoolhouse, Wava Wonderlab, Lewis and Clark expedition boat, dress-up and photo op area and the log reading nook. You can enjoy seeing the model trains running and take in the 15 beautiful hand-painted murals of towns and cities in Dubois Special Section: Solar Eclipse Events County. You can salute the business pioneers of the county with the new Business Hall of Fame and Junior Achievement area, and you can learn about the ATHENA Leadership Award for women of the county through the exhibit created by the Jasper Rotary Club. Memberships to the museum are available. Admission is charged, but it’s free to all members with a paid yearly membership. Call 812- 634-7733.
