Hiring a Wedding Planner
‘What do I do now???’ would often be
a question in your mind as you plan your
wedding or that of a loved one. At times it
would be a blur and you would wonder who
you should hire to do the flowers, poruwa,
cake, cake boxes, invites, bridal, makeup,
venue….. And who would ensure that the
musicians would play your favourite songs,
that the best man did not forget the ring,
that the little flower girls are not hungry (yes
indeed), that the cake did indeed arrive on
time….. the list can be endless. Yikes!
Who would come to your rescue? A wedding
planner, who would know all aspects
of the countdown towards the
wedding, sequence of a
wedding, know who’s who in the
weddings industry, how to patch
things up during a small ‘hiccup’
in case one does come up and
how to make you as well as your
service providers – happy.
Having a wedding planner is becoming the
latest wedding trend in Sri Lanka. There are
several wedding planning companies and
freelancers in the island. To enlighten those
who are unfamiliar with the concept, Bride
and Groom Magazine interviewed ‘Connections’,
one of the leading wedding planners
in Sri Lanka, to learn of what a wedding
planner has on offer for those planning to
get married.
Why would you need a wedding
planner?
A wedding planner helps out with all these
aspects of the wedding, i.e. from concept
to execution, and sees that the wedding is
carried out in a smooth fashion. To give a
few examples:
The couple getting married could have
a very heavy work schedule or would
be in the country for a short period,
leaving little time for them to organize
all important as well as minor details of
the wedding. They
would have no time to
go out and meet people
and arrange items.
The parents would have no previous
experience organizing a wedding
and would find the task too huge to
comprehend where to start from.

At times things will seem a bit too tiring
or overwhelming and the bride/groom
or a parent would need someone to
talk to / get advice from.
How long before the wedding should a
couple seek a wedding planner?
We advise to get an appointment as soon
as the wedding date is fixed; so it would
be either a year in advance or just few
months away from the big day. We say this
because we can then start negotiating
with hotels and suppliers immediately
and relieve our clients from the hassle
of doing the scouting, walking and the
talking, thereby saving them a lot of
precious time.
Is there a wide range of themes that
are popular in Sri Lanka?
There are quite a number of daring
couples who want to do something different.
This is a trend that is on the rise in Sri
Lanka. Though majority is still content with
color based themes, couples are now
opting for nontraditional colors and being
a bit bold with wanting to make a very
personal statement.
What advice do you have for a bride or
groom who gets nervous about the
wedding celebrations, nearing the
wedding?
Communicate, communicate & communicate
with each other. It is your day and you two
need to be able to enjoy the wedding.
Talk to your parents or your close
friends if you think they have more
experience in handling specific issues.
If it’s related to the planning of the
wedding, speak to your wedding
planner and clear any grey areas.
Go through the checklist that was
prepared for you by the wedding
planner.
Take a mini break in planning for your
wedding, go out and dine or do something
completely unrelated which you
both enjoy.
What advice would you have for the
maid of honour in helping the wedding?
In most cases, the maid of honour would be
a sister or a best friend who will know the
bride inside out. She can be a great
supporter to the bride to be during the run
up to the wedding, so we advice the maid
of honour:
Listen to the bride if she needs to talk,
even if it means more than 10 calls a
day. Give her a lending ear and some
advice if she needs it.
Initiate the hen night, if the bride is
interested in one. Make it a memorable
one for your friend, the bride; she sure
can do with some “girl therapy” before
the wedding!
On the day of the wedding make sure
that the bride’s saree/dress looks fine.
Assist the bride with things she needs
help with, make sure that that her
makeup is intact and hair is tidy at all
times.
Do you organise homecomings and
cover all ethnic wedding events as
well?
Yes we do.
What advice would you
have for the couple's
parents in organizing
the wedding and homecoming?
In Sri Lanka, the parents play a big role in
planning their children's weddings. We
advice:
While being supportive of their
children in planning the event, they
must also try to accommodate the
wishes of their children, after all it's
their big day!
It's important that the parents play the
perfect host on the big day.
Feeling fresh and stress free will help
them to mingle with relatives and

friends with ease.
Most importantly spend some quality
time with the bride and groom during
the planning period.

Going to a neutral party like a wedding
planner will help to find a common ground
between the wishes of the couple to be

could also help bridge gaps in understanding
and managing differing expectations.
Do you have a flat fee or do you work
with a couple's budget?
Our quite flexible budget depends on the
client’s requirement. We have services
offering from day co-ordination to total
wedding planning.
What was the most memorable
moment that you've come across as a
wedding planner?
A bride-to-be hired us to be her wedding
planner, as she had had a stressful experience
in organizing her own engagement
function and did not want to go through the
same hassle and tiring process again for
her wedding. But she had not previously
informed her parents that she would be
hiring us, which led to a very awkward
initial meeting with the parents. The mother
eventually warmed up to us and at the end
of a successful wedding event, she hugged
us and thanked us for being a tower of
strength to their daughter.
What other advice would you have for
the couple?
It's your first project together as a
couple, so when making decisions
related to the wedding try doing it
together.
Soliciting advice from many will leave
you in a state of confusion and unduly
stressed, so minimize the involvement of
many and let your wedding planner
guide you and assist you in making
your dream wedding come true.

Being the Best Man
at a Wedding

So you’ve been requested to be the Best
man at a wedding… Need some clues as
to how you may help the groom get
prepared for the wedding? Wondering
what is expected of you on the wedding
day? Bride and Groom magazine has
some great points for you.
Get organised
You can prepare a list (for your reference)
including wedding venue, details of
service providers, due dates and times
etc. And input phone numbers of all the
service providers into phone/phone
book. And then help the groom keep to
the set appointments, including
tuxedo/suit fitting appointments.
Develop skills
As the Best man you may be required to
give a speech at the wedding. So write
and practice your speech. Learn to dance
in case you need to escort a bridesmaid
in joining the wedded couple on the
dance floor.
Manage the friends
If the groom is having a bachelor party,
insist on and make sure it is held at least
a week before the wedding, as it will
prevent last minute delays in other areas.
Remove any peer pressure on groom on
drinking - the day before the wedding.
He needs to be ready, awake and
looking good on the wedding day! And
as his ‘personal caretaker’ on his
wedding day, remove any peer pressure
on groom on drinking on the day.
Before the wedding day
Pickup the groom’s tuxedo or fitting
appointment as scheduled. Help the
groom pack for the honeymoon. Make
sure other groomsmen (if any) are ok with
their suits and shoes.
Wedding day responsibilities
As the Best man, you should keep the
groom company as he gets ready on the
wedding day. It is vital that you ensure
the wedding rings are available on
wedding day. Check the following
before he enters wedding venue: is his
hair in order? Is his pant’s fly up? Has he
a handkerchief and has he visited the
rest room?
Put your chest forward, give the
wedding speech and invite all to toast.
Act as ring bearer / if there is a child as
the ring bearer – ensure he knows what
to do. Act as a host - be courteous to all
guests and make sure ushers are doing
their job. And act as liaison - between
the groom and his family during the
wedding. Ensure the couple is doing well
during the wedding. You would also
need to diplomatically deal with issues
that could arise, without making a scene,
politely with all parties concerned.
As the wedding celebrations draw to a
close ensure the marriage license is kept
in a safe place. Ensure the groom’s
wallet, phone as well as passports,
plane tickets if any, bookings are all
with the groom prior to his departure for
his honeymoon. Help the family clear up,
if needed, after the wedding.
Remember… on his wedding day… you
are the groom’s friend, confidant, savior
and overall superman. Put on your best
smile; be there for the groom, his bride
and family. Keep calm at all times and
be polite to all. It would be a fun and
memorable day to remember….
After the wedding day
You’ve been a tower of strength for the
groom following up to the wedding and
on the special day. If anything was hired
for the groom’s party, make sure they
are returned. And when he has
returned… help him through the homecoming
event; and as you now know how
to handle things it would be a breeze.
