THINK OF THE WEST
ELLIE BUSBY
For decades the divide
between western Sydney
and the east has been
enormous, with perceptions and
stereotypes creating Sydney’s
Grand Canyon.
But as western Sydney experiences
an incredible period of
growth, Parra News has discovered
perceptions are changing.
We visited the streets of Bondi
and Mosman, two suburbs that
would have snubbed the west in
years gone by.
We discovered a newfound
respect for western Sydney,
excitement about its growth and
improved knowledge about what
the west offers its residents.
So, what do the rest really think
of the west?
LOCAL NEWS
An unthinkable tragedy
Three people dead as martial arts instructor is charged with horrific murders
ELLIE BUSBY
Floral tributes adorn a
martial arts studio in North
Parramatta as the community
comes to terms with an horrific
crime last week.
The 49-year-old owner of Lion’s
Taekwondo Martial Arts Academy,
known as Master Lion Yoo, is facing
three murder charges over the
tragic deaths of three people.
The three people who were found
deceased have been identified as
39-year-old Steven Cho, 41-year-old
Min Cho and a seven-year-old child.
Police allege that Yoo attended
Westmead Hospital on Monday,
February 19, at 11.50pm with slash
wounds to his chest, arms and
stomach.
He told police that the injuries
were the result of being attacked in
a car park outside a supermarket in
Church Street.
A concern for welfare report led
officers attached to The Hills Police
District to attend an address on
Watkins Road in Baulkham Hills on
10.15am on Tuesday, February 20.
On arrival, the deceased body
of Steven was located, with NSW
The martial arts studio in North Parramatta. Photo: Melinda Jane.
Police confirming he died of several
stab wounds.
Following inquiries, officers
attended Lion’s Taekwondo Martial
Arts Academy where they found the
bodies of Min and the seven-yearold
inside the studio, who died from
“injuries inflicted during assault”.
Police have confirmed the boy was
a student at the martial arts studio.
Crime scenes were established
and examined by forensic police at
both locations.
Detective Superintendent Daniel
Doherty from the State Crime
Command’s Homicide Squad
described the deaths as a “sad,
tragic event.”
“It’s horrendous to think about,
and the actions by the man will be
subject to charge,” he said.
“Anything that involves a child
being murdered... it’s tragic.
“All I can say of the consequences,
as I’ve said before, are cataclysmic
and it’s a tragic circumstance.”
Doherty added that the family and
friends of those who were killed are
still processing the “harrowing”
news.
Locals have left flowers at the site.
“The family is still dealing with
the news, and the friends, but we
believe there was no warnings, from
what we’ve gathered so far,” he said.
“It was out of the blue, something
that wasn’t forewarned, there was
nothing that put a red flag up as far
as we understand.”
Yoo was kept under police guard
while he was treated for his injuries,
before being charged with three
counts of murder about 9pm on
Wednesday, February 21, with a
bedside hearing taking place the
following day.
Doherty said police will allege
Yoo killed Min and the child, who
cannot be named for legal reasons,
inside the martial arts studio,
before driving to the Baulkham
Hills address in the woman’s white
BMW, where he confronted Steven
and committed the third murder.
He’s now appealing for anyone
with further information to come
forward.
“It’s early in the investigation,
we’re still seeking assistance from
the community, we’re still hoping
that other people might be able
to fill some timelines in for us,”
Doherty added.
“I’m sure that other people would
have been around the martial arts
academy, if not inside then outside
between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on
Monday, 19th of February.
“They may have seen unusual
behaviour with this man in the
white BMW leaving from North
Parramatta to Baulkham Hills.”
Anyone with information that
may assist investigators is urged to
contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333
000.
The studio remains taped up by
police, with some locals leaving
flowers on the doorstep.
It’s western Sydney’s time to shine
Ellie Busby’s fascinating story on our front
page and page nine this week shows how perceptions
of Parramatta and western Sydney
more broadly are changing.
When we sent Ellie to the streets of Mosman
and Bondi last week, I expected we may hear
some of those old stereotypes from locals
about the west.
Alan Mascarenhas
@alanmasc
News...........................................................1-13
School Open Days.............................14
Business................................................15-16
But instead, Ellie returned with stories of
newfound respect and admiration from western
Sydney.
There were very few negative comments.
A few years ago, and certainly a couple of
decades ago, it would have been a very different
story. The “us and them” mentality was
very much in focus.
Housing is today’s barbeque stopper issue
in Sydney. We all know friends or relatives
struggling to scrape together funds only to be
blown away at an auction.
Others can’t find rental accommodation.
Our city is one of the most unaffordable housing
and rental markets in the world.
Leaders frequently come to office promising
to do something, only to tinker around the
edges or come up short with the electorate.
Think Bill Shorten and his proposals to limit
negative gearing concessions. Or Dominic
Perrottet, who dabbled at introducing a tradeoff
between upfront stamp duty and land tax.
Now, the Minns government has entered
this tricky terrain with its commitment to
significantly boost housing supply. There are
three key aspects to its draft reforms. First, the
so-called Transport Oriented Development
program which proposes high-density stateled
rezoning around eight Metro stations and
medium-density rezoning (up to six stories)
around a further 31 rail stations. Locally, only
Lidcombe and Berala are included in this list.
Second, there are proposed low and midrise
housing reforms that seek to clarify what
can be built within 800 metres of a train station
or town centre right across Sydney. For
example, terraces, townhouses and manor
homes would be permitted in areas near these
hubs currently zoned as “low-density R2”.
Zoning would not be affected. There would
simply be a clarification of what can happen
under existing zoning.
Thirdly, the government is proposing simplified
approvals for duplexes and dual occupancies.
While there are legitimate concerns about
these changes – which I’ll get to below – I’m
also struck by newfound pragmatism in the
community that addressing Sydney’s housing
crisis is vitally important. Housing is simply an
issue that affects every family.
This is a time when NSW has the nation’s
highest rents, highest median house prices
and is last on the east coast when it comes to
dwelling completions. Economists agree supply
has to be one part of the solution. And so,
giving young people a foothold on the housing
ladder and mature age residents greater
opportunity if desired to transition to different
housing in later life (potentially in the suburb
they’ve loved, close to kids and grandkids) is a
wonderful thing if done right.
There is potential to create a wide coalition
in favour of sensible measures. However, I believe
there are four directions the government
could take to maximise public support for its
approach.
The first is to align with existing council
housing strategies and precinct plans. Cooperative
councils that are working hard to
meet or exceed housing targets, and have researched
where to appropriately add density
in their communities should be brought on
the journey.
Secondly, prioritising tree canopy and cooler
neighbourhoods is vital as part of any proposals
to expand medium-density. Sometimes I
think all the planners and policymakers live
Life & Style...........................................17-18
Travel & Fun...................................19-40
Entertainment................................41-53
But with improved infrastructure and more
funding, there is an understanding now that
western Sydney is where it’s at.
And as the city becomes more and more expensive,
we may even see a few people swapping
Bondi Beach for Lake Parramatta.
It’s a brilliant period to be from western Sydney.
It’s our time to shine.
What is solution to housing crisis?
along the coast. But here in the west, when
summer hits, we really feel it.
With Parramatta and Cumberland LGAs
struggling, stronger policies and guarantees
are needed to support residential tree canopy
and even minimum spaces, setbacks and gardens
where children can play.
Third, the government should clarify the
status of Heritage Conservation Areas and
Special Character Areas. These are cherished
pockets of our communities that exist from
Epping to Harris Park and Winston Hills. Yet
they don’t need to remain static in time. As
Heritage Council NSW Chair Frank Howarth
observed in the Sydney Morning Herald last
year, “If we don’t change, we don’t get the heritage
of the future.”
The government could provide greater certainty
about the scope of heritage protection
(potentially through a Ministerial direction)
by clarifying what low/mid-rise architectural
adaptation is permissible in these areas and
what isn’t.
Finally, efforts to boost housing supply in
Parramatta, Cumberland and beyond simply
cannot be separated from provision of additional
infrastructure.
Schools, hospitals, childcare, parks, major
road, bridge and intersection upgrades, public
transport, as well as electricity, water and
sewage connections have to accompany plans
for new housing. This is not about being anti-development
but passionately pro-infrastructure,
supporting a decent quality of life
for new and established residents alike.
LOCAL NEWS
“Shame on you”: Debate erupts
over drag story time
ELLIE BUSBY
A
push by local Councillors
to ban drag story time
events has failed after it
was branded an “act of aggression”
against the queer community.
Local resident Jessica Duffy, a
proud trans-masculine non-binary
person and a drag performer, has
slammed Cumberland Council over
a move to prevent drag story time
events for children being hosted at
local libraries.
Speaking to Councillors Steve
Christou and Joseph Rahme, who
put forward the motion, Duffy
expressed deep disgust.
“Shame on you both. This motion
is a blatant display of the disregard
these Councillors have for the LGBT
community, queer art and the issues
we face, even in their own wards of
Council,” Duffy said.
“It sexualises the queer community
and calls us ‘inappropriate’ for
children when we decide to share
our historic forms of art with the
wider community.
“At its core, this motion is about
homophobia and the suppression
of queerness in this local council
area.”
Duffy also added that if Council
refused to support drag in the local
area then it would actively be taking
work away from its queer constituents.
“It appears that the Councillors
would rather tell queer children, like
me, that they are not welcome, that
they are obscene,” Duffy continued.
“This motion will not protect
children, it will only make it more
dangerous for queer children to
exist.”
The motion comes after Local
Government NSW’s annual conference
encouraged Councils to host
more LGBTQIA+ inclusive events
throughout the year, including that
of drag story time.
But Christou said the community
had “strongly conveyed” to him that
they do not want drag story time
reading.
“To push an ideology amongst the
Cumberland City Council community
and insist that we bring drag
performers and make it an issue
about payment and discrimination
against drag performers is absolutely
disgraceful and not what this
is all about,” he said.
“I would suggest if certain sections
of the community want drag reading
time, they book a hall or an event
venue, like every other community
and host it.
“Residents of Cumberland want to
be treated equally, they don’t want
a particular ideology shoved down
their throat.”
Backing Christou, Rahme said the
motion was about free speech.
“We don’t need to be sexualising
our infants, let kids be kids,” he told
the Chamber.
“What they choose to identify as
later in life is their prerogative and
I’ve got no issue with that.”
Councillor and Deputy Mayor Ola
Hamed spoke against the motion.
“Here we are yet again entertaining
yet another time-wasting
motion from the other side, one that
makes absolutely no sense, one that
is hateful, divisive and has nothing
to do with Cumberland and has
been designed to further ostracise,”
she said.
“Enough is enough. Enough of the
division, enough of the embarrassment,
enough of the misleading,
enough of wasting the Council’s
A push to ban drag story time has failed.
time.”
When put to a vote, the motion
to stop the events from being held
in the Council area was lost, with
Mayor Lisa Lake being the deciding
vote.
“I believe this motion sends a
harmful message to Cumberland
that the LGBTQIA+ community is
not welcome and its capable of causing
deep hurt to this community,”
Lake added.
Councillors who voted in favour of
the motion were Christou, Rahme,
Eddy Sarkis, Greg Cummings,
Michael Zaiter, Helen Hughes and
Paul Garrard.
Councillors who voted against it
were Lake, Hamed, Sabrin Farooqui,
Glenn Elmore, Mohamad
Hussein, Suman Saha and Diane
Colman.
Currently, there are no drag story
time events planned for the local
area.
Cumberland Council also
confirmed it has never held drag
story time events in the past.
Green light is a “game changer”
LOCAL NEWS
New shelter offers a safe place
Jo Haylen and Donna Davis.
ELLIE BUSBY
The NSW Government
has finally
confirmed Stage 2 of
the Parramatta Light Rail
will be moving full steam
ahead following planning
approval – but the completion
date remains unknown.
NSW Transport Minister
Jo Haylen called it a “major
step forward” for the
project, adding that it will
make growing western
Sydney communities more
connected than ever before.
“With around half of local
residents and a third of local
employees projected to live
and work across the project
corridor, this new track will
serve a population of close
to 280,000 by 2041,” she said.
“Stage 2 will directly link
residents in Parramatta to
the Sydney Olympic Park
precinct and give communities
like Wentworth Point
the public transport they’ve
been promised.”
The 10-kilometre extension
will connect Parramatta
CBD to Sydney Olympic Park
via the growing communities
of Camellia, Rydalmere,
Ermington, Melrose Park
and Wentworth Point.
The approved light rail
corridor includes alignment
changes around Rydalmere
that intend to make connections
to the Rydalmere Ferry
Wharf easier and improve
travel times.
Construction will be
phased, with initial work
to begin later this year on a
new 320-metre public and
active transport bridge over
Parramatta River, between
Melrose Park and Wentworth
Point.
Procurement to deliver
the $602.4 million bridge is
underway, with the initial
contract for enabling works
expected to be awarded
later this year. This is the
first stage in delivering
Parramatta Light Rail Stage
2, with main construction
work on the bridge expected
to start in 2025.
Enabling works on the
bridge are subject to
approval by the Federal
Minister for the Environment
and Water.
“This will be a real game
changer for the way people
move around our city and I
can’t wait to see work begin,”
Parramatta MP Donna
Davis said.
ELLIE BUSBY
As domestic violence
related incidents
continue to increase,
a new local shelter is providing
a space for women and
children to feel safe and
supported.
Set to open next month,
the Cumberland-based
shelter will help address the
“huge need” for more vital
support services and accommodation
for those facing
homelessness and domestic
and family violence.
Tania Smith, Executive
Officer, Client Services at the
shelter, said they are looking
forward to beginning service
provisions in the next few
weeks.
“I’ve worked in the sector
for 19 years in women’s
refuges and we’ve been calling
out for more spaces, so
we welcome this initiative,”
she told Parra News.
“We have a huge need,
especially in our area, for the
post-crisis accommodation
support such as transitional
housing, which gives women
longer to be able to settle
in to potentially engage in
training and education and
employment pathways, as
well as to be able to heal from
Temple & Webster’s Adam McWhinney, Evolve Housing’s
Jo Gaines, WCS CEO Annabelle Daniel, Governor Margaret
Beazley, Tania Smith, Jane Cummings and Jo Lang.
the trauma.”
A partnership between
Women’s Community
Shelters (WCS), Parramatta
Women’s Shelter (PWS)
and community housing
provider Evolve Housing
Limited, the new shelter has
11 units, providing a combination
of three, two and one
bedroom spaces for families.
Also supported by Temple
and Webster, who has
supplied everything from
beds to lounges, Smith
said the shelter has been
designed to feel like a home.
“It’s a home, that’s our ethos
in all women’s community
shelters, is that we come
from a trauma-informed
perspective – all of our shelters
are set up beautifully
and the women and children
can really start to feel their
worth,” she continued.
“They deserve to be in
beautiful spaces.”
The project has been partly
funded through the NSW
Government.
Smith says she’s grateful
for the support of the NSW
Government in the core and
cluster method – a model
that allows for independent
living and privacy while also
providing access to support
– but believes there’s more
that still needs to be done.
NORTH ROCKS ROAD
PARTIAL LANE CLOSURES
AND NIGHT WORKS
27 February to 12 March 2024
From 27 February, North Rocks Road will be reduced to one lane in each
direction to allow for investigation works to begin on Hunts Creek Bridge.
This work is in preparation for a bridge replacement program expected to
start in May 2024.
For two weeks, traffic controllers will be in place from 8pm each evening
Monday to Saturday, diverting traffic around investigations taking place on
the road and footpath along Hunts Creek Bridge. On Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, altered road conditions will begin at 9pm. These timeframes are
subject to inclement weather.
All efforts will be made to complete noise intensive activities earlier in the
evening. However, there will be times where noisy activities such as the use
of a vacuum truck will occur late into the evening /early morning.
North Rocks Road will be reinstated by 5am allowing motorists and
pedestrians to use the road as normal.
West could lead jobs growth
ELLIE BUSBY
A
bold economic plan has revealed
that if the western Sydney economy
experienced the same job-toworker
ratio as the rest of Sydney, 400,000
new jobs would be delivered by 2036,
compared to business-as-usual growth.
Unveiled by Western Sydney University
(WSU), the ‘Unlimited Potential: Western
Sydney’s Economic Plan’ shares how growing
the economy would see western Sydney
add $100 billion to the state’s economy and
become a leading economic powerhouse.
Chancellor, Professor Jennifer Westacott,
who launched the plan in Parramatta,
said the region was on the precipice of a
once-in-a-generation economic transformation.
“With our young, diverse, and entrepreneurial
population and a new international
airport opening in 2026, western Sydney is
an area of massive advantage,” she said.
“I want western Sydney locals to have
high-paying jobs, access to the skills they
need, and no longer be forced to drive 40
minutes each day to work.”
Released by the university’s Centre for
Western Sydney, the report is a blueprint that
builds on the region’s existing advantages to
propel western Sydney to the forefront of the
global economy.
The plan identifies key economic focus
areas that will accelerate growth, elevate
GRP per capita, and ensure western Sydney
residents have access to local jobs and thriving
communities.
These objectives are to be achieved
through transformational ‘leaps’, developed
LOCAL NEWS
Jennifer Westacott and Deputy Premier of
NSW and Minister for Western Sydney Prue
Car.
in consultation with stakeholders from both
industry and community, to propel western
Sydney’s growth trajectory forward.
The report also acknowledges challenges
for businesses in the region, revealing a
downturn in business income over the
previous 10 years, which comparatively
grew in the rest of Sydney.
“Any plan that boosts the region’s economy
must prioritise the delivery of meaningful
and fulfilling jobs, as well as business
opportunities for all residents,” Westacott
added.
“We can no longer rely on population
growth to drive the economy, but we need to
invest in our people and jobs of the future.”
The insights gathered from the community,
industry and key stakeholders will help
inform the final report and its actionable
recommendations.
Avoid the area from 8pm to 5am, if possible. Allow extra travel time.
LOCAL NEWS
A closing divide: What
the rest think of the west
ELLIE BUSBY
Harsh stereotypes and postcode
prejudice – the divide between the
eastern and western suburbs has
often felt like a tale of two cities for those out
west.
But with a slew of developments on the
cards for Parramatta and Penrith’s new beach
making waves, it’s no secret that western
Sydney has changed significantly in the last
10 years alone.
So, have sentiments from the east also
changed? And what do the rest really think
about the west?
Parra News recently headed out to Bondi
and Mosman to find out.
When locals were asked what the first thing
they think of is when they hear the words
‘western Sydney’, the answers couldn’t have
been more varied.
“Growth. Seriously, growth, a lot of good
friends have businesses in that area and
they’re doing really well and everyone who
just comes from western Sydney talks about
the growth in western Sydney, which I think
is great,” 43-year-old Bondi local Bryan said.
“I kind of think it’s more of a diverse area of
Sydney than [Bondi] for example,” 48-year-old
Adrian, a former Bondi local, said.
“Fantastic Vietnamese
food,” another added.
22-year-old Eastern suburbs resident Missy
Jane.
BONDI
The divide between the east and west seems to be starting to close, with stereotypes destroyed. Photo: Melinda Jane.
Adrian and Al are both originally from the
eastern suburbs. Photo: Melinda Jane.
“I think in the east it’s not as welcoming
and easy to enter as the culture in the west,”
22-year-old Eastern suburbs resident Missy
explained.
“I don’t go out to western Sydney much
[anymore] but I’m amazed at the way that
Parramatta is coming up, it looks fantastic,”
85-year-old Mosman local David said.
“Not much, I don’t go out there,” 48-year-old
Bondi local Yvette said.
“At the moment, Pondi, but I think cultural
diversity is one thing that springs to mind,”
Bondi local Amy said.
“Parramatta is very nice, very renovated
now,” Tim, a 36-year-old from Mosman,
added.
One Mosman local just said “Blacktown”.
As for stereotypes, westies are aware of the
assumptions many from the east have placed
on western Sydney – we’ve been labelled by
some as uncultured, lazy and a ‘bunch of
bogans’. But are these assumptions still
believed in the eastern suburbs and lower
north shore? Not according to those we spoke
to in Bondi and Mosman.
“I think they’re very untrue, I think stereotypes
are wrong in general and I think anyone
who puts stereotypes on people from western
Sydney are just delusional,” Bryan added.
“No, not at all, stereotypes are always not a
nice thing to have about people,” Missy said.
“Well, the media likes to ham it up, I think
we’ve got our stereotypes and they’ve got
theirs,” Amy explained.
“I respect the western suburbs, I think it’s
coming along and people are becoming not so
far away now, they have a new status of ‘we’re
as good as they are’ and it’s becoming really
good,” David said.
“All the time I’ve been meeting people from
western Sydney they’ve always been lovely
people and very welcoming,” a 39-year-old
Mosman local said.
And as for whether those from the east
would ever head out west to take a dip in
the much-talked about Penrith Beach? The
general consensus is no, not when they have
Bondi Beach on their doorstep – but that
doesn’t mean they’re all against ‘Pondi’.
“The water they’ve got out at Penrith now, so
people can go and dive in there, I think people
are becoming aware of how fantastic [western
Sydney] is rather than the snobby eastern or
northern suburbs,” David added.
“I don’t know, it’s not really a beach right? It’s
more like a pond, hey? That’s what I’ve heard.
But yeah I guess I could check it out, but it’s a
bit far,” Missy added.
“I haven’t been, but I’m skeptical… because a
beach isn’t inland,” 60-year-old Sydney-sider
Rachel said.
“I think it’s great for the area,” Bryan said.
HOROSCOPES
Relax & Unwind
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Jupiter and Uranus send disruptions
in your direction (especially involving
domestic and family matters) plus Mars
demands that you stop being stubborn
and start being more adventurous. The
only certainty at the moment is change!
You’re feeling ridiculously restless but
try to modify your reactions, otherwise
it will be a long and tiring week. Just
because you’re in the process of shaking
up your life doesn’t mean you have to
unsettle everyone around you.
The Sun, Mercury, Saturn and Neptune
are transiting through your sign. So
you’re emanating some serious charisma
this week! Make sure you celebrate the
creative and compassionate Piscean
within via writing, singing dancing,
drawing, painting, playing music or
helping others. But resist the temptation
to spill secrets and blurt out something
inappropriate – especially to a relative or
neighbour. Friday favours short trips and
fun community connections.
Impulsive, feisty planets Mars and
Jupiter are stirring up your horoscope,
so prepare for a challenging week full of
inconvenient disruptions and dramatic
surprises. Being a hot-headed, rambunctious
(or rude) Ram will just land you in
a heap of trouble … especially involving
friendships or financial matters. Simmer
down, before you say or do something
that you later regret. You’ll find cool
cooperation will get you a lot further
than fiery confrontation.
With so many planets in Pisces and
Aquarius, being flexible is the key to a
successful week. If you are too stubborn
and unyielding in your opinions, then
others will just stop listening to what
you have to say. And if you are too
slow off the mark (and hesitant to take
action) then others will streak ahead of
you, especially at work. So your motto
is from fellow Taurean, actress Shirley
MacLaine, “Don’t be afraid to go out on a
limb. It’s where all the fruit is.”
You’re keen to connect with others
as four planets activate your career
zone. It’s a terrific time to converse and
communicate, text and tweet. People
are waiting to hear what you’ve got to say
as you brainstorm your creative ideas.
Mercury (your ruling planet) makes
positive links with the Sun, Saturn and
Jupiter, so stop procrastinating and start
delivering! Be inspired by birthday great,
writer and illustrator Dr Seuss, “Only you
can control your future.”
Cancer folk can be super cautious …
spending too much time at home in your
cosy comfort zone. But this week – with
the Sun, Mercury, Saturn, Neptune and
Jupiter all activating your travel and
adventure zone – it’s time to crawl out
of your Crab cave and be much more
adventurous. Be inspired by Hollywood
movie star (and birthday great) Elizabeth
Taylor, “There are so many doors
to be opened, and I’m not afraid to look
behind them.”
Librans long for peace and harmony.
You want everything to run smoothly
this week, but it may not happen! Relationships
will be unpredictable and
loved ones disruptive, so revise your
expectations and just take things as they
come. With four planets activating your
daily routine zone, look for exciting ways
to expand your influence in the world
around you. You’ll find the more you
extend yourself and encourage others,
the more successful you’ll be.
Don’t be too set in the way you think
the week should develop. With Mars
and Uranus shaking things up, expect
last-minute delays or disruptions that
will keep you on your toes! Attached
Virgos – take the time to talk through
problems with your sweetheart. Singles
– look beyond the exterior package that a
potential partner presents. Killer curves
or bulging biceps may seem enticing
but – if the two of you can’t communicate
well – it’s just not going to last.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
The stars favour decorating, re-designing
or renovating your home
environment, and some Scorpios will
move house. But are you brooding on the
past … and kicking yourself for romantic
or career opportunities you’ve missed
along the way? It’s time to learn from
your mistakes and move on. Your motto
for the moment is from birthday great
Johnny Cash, “Close the door on the past.
You don’t forget the mistakes, but you
don’t dwell on them.”
Four planets (including Saturn) are
stirring up your domestic zone, and
disruptive Mars squares your ruler Jupiter.
Which could rattle your composure,
fire up your frustrations, and amplify
any family problems you’re facing at the
moment. But don’t waste your time (and
everyone else’s) with endless complaining.
Instead, be inspired by movie legend
(and birthday great) Elizabeth Taylor,
“Pour yourself a drink, put on some
lipstick, and pull yourself together.”
This week the Sun, Mercury and
Saturn encourage you to listen to loved
ones closely and keep the channels
of communication open. Is a family
member going through a rough patch?
Don’t lecture them! Strive to help them
in compassionate and generous ways.
But it may be time to be more proactive
about money matters and reformulate
your financial plans. When it comes to
work and business, it’s much better to
under-promise and then over-deliver.
TRAVEL
Relax & Unwind
DESTINATION
Wollongong
TOTTO MAKES A SPLASH
WORDS
Ellie Busby
IMAGES
Supplied
MORE INFO
(02) 9069 5528
Wollongong – AKA ‘The
Gong’ – has long been
a favourite weekend
getaway for those out west. And
with its beautiful beaches and
relaxed atmosphere, it’s easy
to see why it remains a go-to
summer staycation.
Just an hour-and-a-half drive
from Penrith, I recently took a
trip down to Wollongong to stay
at Hotel TOTTO.
Providing industrial-style,
modern accommodation, Hotel
TOTTO is located smack bang in
the middle of the coastal city.
Walking across the street takes
you directly to Wollongong
Central, a shopping centre
bustling with eateries and high
street retailers – perfectly situated
for those in desperate need
of some retail therapy.
Just down the road is WIN
Stadium, which has hosted
everything from massive sporting
events to music legends like
Crowded House.
And, most importantly, the
beach is a mere 15-minute walk
from your doorstep.
But it’s not just the prime location
that makes Hotel TOTTO
a must-stay – it’s the high-class
hospitality delivered with a
friendly smile.
From the minute I arrive, I
notice the laidback vibe of the
hotel. Check-in is an easy process,
and with Hotel TOTTO’s selfserve
kiosks I don’t have to deal
with the queues that sometimes
come with checking-in at peak
times.
Staff are more than eager to give
recommendations on where to
go for food and entertainment in
Wollongong, and suddenly I have
a list of local joints to check out.
Heading up to my room for the
weekend, I discovered a bright
and cosy space, accented with
earthy tones.
Although its minimalistic in
styling, the room still comes with
all the bells and whistles, including
a comfortable bed, air-con, a
smart TV and plenty of bathroom
amenities to wash help wash off a
day at the beach.
Before leaving the hotel to
explore the food scene, I headed
downstairs to in-house restaurant
and bar BASTA Trattoria, to
make the most out of happy hour
– and I was not disappointed.
The restaurant provides plenty
of space for guests to spread out
and enjoy the great selection
of cocktails on offer, from the
outdoor terrace to the bar-top
seating and chic main dining
area. Open for breakfast, lunch,
dinner and drinks, BASTA Trattoria’s
menu is inspired by Mediterranean
and Italian flavours.
Venturing out, I walked down
to the beach to take in the beautiful
sunset, before heading to
Steamers Bar and Grill for some
delicious fish and chips.
The next morning, after a
relaxing sleep-in, it was back
to BASTA Trattoria to try out its
breakfast menu. Don’t expect
a basic continental here – with
everything from smoked salmon
on sourdough and Belgian
waffles to a tasty granola bowl,
it felt more like brunch at a very
Instagramable café than a hotel
dining room.
“YOU’D BE
HARD-PRESSED
TO FIND A HOTEL
THAT DOES
IT BETTER.”
Then, it was time to head down
to the waves, where I spent most
of the day diving in and out of the
water, reading on the beach and
soaking up the sun – truly the
best way to refresh after a long
week.
I often find one of the worst
things about heading to the
beach is the long drive home in
Cocktails at BASTA Trattoria.
Breakfast at BASTA Trattoria.
wet swimmers and sand in my
hair, but staying at Hotel TOTTO
by-passed that problem altogether.
All it took was a short walk and
then I was back in my room where
I could refresh and relax without
stressing about being caught up
in traffic.
After a quick pit-stop for ice
cream, it was time to head back
to the hotel for dinner. Whereas
breakfast was more of a laidback
dining experience, dinner is
where BASTA Trattoria really
comes to life.
Featuring amazing live music
and a menu to die for, I started
off with some house marinated
olives and the rosemary and
garlic pizzetta – one of the most
popular items on the menu
I’m told. The mains were
the pesto and zucchini
orecchiette and prawn
and roasted tomato
casarecce.
There’s no better way to wrap
up a long day at the beach than
with a solid serving of carbs,
and BASTA Trattoria certainly
delivered. Both pasta dishes were
jam-packed full of flavour and
expertly cooked, so kudos to the
chefs.
To balance out the savoury, I
ordered the vanilla panna cotta
and strawberry compote for
dessert, which was definitely the
right way to end the night.
Despite being relatively new
to the scene, Hotel TOTTO
has already established a reputation
as the ultimate getaway
destination for those who want
to experience the very best of
Wollongong.
And with everything you need
within arm’s reach, you’d be
hard-pressed to find a hotel that
does it better.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
JETTING INTO TOWN
CASSIDY PEARCE
Jimi Hocking has been with the Screaming
Jets on and off since the third year
of its existence, initially joining in 1993.
Off the back of the success of their hit
single ‘Better’, the band went to the US
where Hocking admitted the wheels started
falling off, seeing him come in to replace Richard
Lara after he fell ill.
“I came in to do three weeks with the band,
and Richie just never came back, so that three
weeks turned into three years, four years, five
years, and I was still there by the end of the
’90s playing with the band,” he said.
It was after this that Hocking took time off,
focusing on making music as a solo artist.
However, he made his return to the band almost
15 years ago, having remained close with
members who had hoped this dream of reuniting
would become a reality.
“I think [Dave] always hoped that if the timing
was right, I would come back to the band,”
he said.
“Izzy Osmanovic had been playing in the
band for a few years since when I was gone,
and he left the band, and people were reaching
out to me to see what I was doing, and the
timing was right – I’d done a lot of the things I
wanted to do, I spent time living in New York,
I got divorced, I got my black belt grading, all
the things that were on my bucket list – so I decided
I would come back and help the band
get back to where it was.”
In the time he was flying solo, Hocking admitted
he missed the humour and family-feel
of the band, driven by founders Dave Gleeson
and the late Paul Woseen.
“By and large, Paul and Dave were really the
people that had the ethos of it being a family
band, and that old-fashioned family band
idea has trickled down and everybody’s entered
the realm,” he said.
“The Screaming Jets is not so much a business
opportunity, but it really is like a band of
mates who want to make music together.”
At the time when he returned to the Screaming
Jets, Hocking said there were a few shifts
on the back end which would ultimately bring
the band back to a better place, proven by the
success of their latest album.
Released in October last year, ‘Professional
Misconduct’ debuted at number one on the
ARIA Australian album chart, number one on
the ARIA vinyl album chart and number one
on the main ARIA album chart.
The record features 10 new tracks including
the singles ‘Nothing to Lose’ and the anthemic
track, ‘Second Chance’ and is their first full album
of all-new music in eight years.
Hocking said he was shocked at the type of
success the album experienced, bringing fans
new and old out of the woodwork.
“I think it’s a great record, but that’s just me,
so you do what you do, and you hope people
enjoy it, but I had really outstanding responses
from people, like literally people stopping
me in the street – which is quite unusual now
– to talk about the songs and to say what their
favourite moments are,” he said.
“These are people who have really listened
and really absorbed the album for real, like in
the old days when you’d buy ‘The Dark Side
of the Moon’ and really throw yourself into it,
and even students who come and see me have
wanted to learn guitar parts off the record.
“It’s really had a great impact, and I’m so encouraged
by that. At my age, I didn’t expect to
be as busy as I am, but here we are!”
The band has been touring the album since
January, and, due to overwhelming demand, a
new show has been added in Richmond, with
Hocking promising a classic rock show complete
with both old and hew hits.
The Screaming Jets will be on at Richmond
Club on Friday, March 1 at 8.30pm. Tickets:
$45. To book, visit richmondclub.com.au.
CASSIDY PEARCE
From next Wednesday, March 6, ‘Wit’
will be returning to the stage at
Riverside Theatre after a smash-hit
2019 season.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary of winning
the Pulitzer Prize, and a part of the HSC
English curriculum, ‘Wit’ is a drama about
life, death, the significance of a semicolon,
and the balance between head and heart.
Directed by Helen Tonkin, ‘Wit’ tells the
story of Vivian Bearing, who is 50, in the
prime of her life, highly respected and at the
height of a stellar academic career. However,
she has just weeks to live.
As Bearing comes to terms with who she
is, the audience is left to wonder – can we
conquer death, or at least our fear of it, by the
way we live our lives?
After critical and popular hits including
‘Freud’s Last Session’, ‘Metamorphosis’, and
‘The Screwtape Letters’, Clock and Spiel
Productions have been praised for their
smart and deeply touching productions, and
‘Wit’ is no exception.
This is a show not to miss. Just make sure
you bring your tissues.
‘Wit’ will be on at Riverside Theatre from
Wednesday, March 6 to Saturday, March 9.
Tickets start from $46. For more information
or to book, visit riversideparramatta.
good portion of the new album at the legendary
Electric Lady studios.
“I was seeking some different environmental
mojo. Great ghosts,” noted Musgraves.
Title track and first single ‘Deeper Well’ is
At the movies...
REVIEW
Bob Marley: One Love

1 hour, 47 minutes
Bob Marley lived by the belief that music
could heal and bring people together.
It was a powerful thought given his career
was influenced by a period in Jamaica’s
history impacted by civil war and political
unrest.
‘Bob Marley: One Love’ sharply focuses
on a specific part of Marley’s story, being
his 1976 peace concert and his survived
assassination attempt.
There’s not a lot about Marley’s early
years and the building of his career – in
fact we come into the story when Marley is
already Jamaica’s biggest star.
But the filmmakers struggle to stick to
their guns here, often providing glimpses
backwards that don’t really add to the story.
The result is a sometimes jumpy, confusing
narrative.
Nonetheless this is an interesting look at
Marley’s career and the health battle that
would ultimately claim his life.
Marley may have died in 1981 but his
music has transcended generations and
certainly moved the reggae genre into
broader society.
If you’re unfamiliar with his story though,
the film will feel it leaves more questions
than answers given the limited time period
it focuses on. I’m not sure a biopic really
lands effectively when it leaves you unsure
about so much in the subject’s life.
‘One Love’ certainly isn’t in the top echelon
of biopics – it’s no ‘Ray’ or ‘Bohemian
Rhapsody’ – but it’s an enjoyable watch
despite its flaws.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
5
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
8ts.com
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
Giants eye off Premiers in opener
NATHAN TAYLOR
GWS Giants defender Jack
Buckley spent 623 days
on the sideline before he
returned to the pitch last year in
spectacular fashion.
After tearing his ACL at the end
of the 2021 season, Buckley’s
comeback couldn’t have gone better
– racking up 26 games and awarded
the club’s Coaches Award at last
year’s Kevin Sheedy Medal.
The 26-year-old thought he was
done and dusted with the game but
his perseverance and determination
to getting back to full fitness
paid off and he couldn’t be more
grateful.
With a new coach in Adam Kingsley
on board to kick off last season,
Buckley considered 2023 a fresh
start for not only the club but for
him also.
“I think it was a fresh start for
everyone,” he said.
“I was able to put that couple of
years behind me because there was
a new energy around the place, new
coaches who I wanted to impress. It
was a clean slate for me, and I took a
lot of confidence in that.
“I just wanted to get back out there
and, once I got a taste of playing
Jack Buckley (right) contests the ball at a recent Giants training session. Photo: Ryan Jones/GWS Giants.
again, it’s something I never want
taken away again.”
While injuries are unpredictable,
Buckley’s perspective on the game
has altered and it’s paying dividends
for him out on the field.
“Injuries are a part of sport, but
every time I’m able to get out there
and be healthy, I just want to be as
grateful as possible,” he said.
“I never thought I’d win the
Coaches Award at the end of last
year. I guess it’s a good sign if you’re
being recognised by the coaches.
It was a nice surprise and very
humbling.”
Buckley flourished under coach
Kingsley and he is hoping to
continue his upwards trajectory in
2024. The Maroubra Saints junior
couldn’t be more complimentary
towards his coach, who replaced
Leon Cameron last season.
“I think the great thing about him
is that he’s incredibly consistent in
his messaging and the way that he
rocks up every day and delivers his
messages and the way he implements
the game plan is something
that’s really easy to follow,” he said.
“He’s so confident in it, so we’re
very confident in it as a result. He
hasn’t changed much in pre-season
this year other than a few little
things here and there.
“We finished strong last year, so we
want to carry that into this season as
much as we can.”
In just under two weeks’ time, football
will return to Giants Stadium
when GWS battle the Premiers in a
Saturday night blockbuster.
The Magpies were responsible for
eliminating the Giants last September
– and they haven’t forgotten
about it.
“Being able to play a primetime
