In our feature interviews in this issue we talk to cover artist and Spanish Legend ISMAEL RIVAS.
With over 25 years of experience behind him, Ismael Rivas, has amply demonstrated why he is one of
the best DJ's in Spain and abroad. We could describe him as many ways, but the easiest one and with
the better we can identify is with his music: own style, with lots of character, with which he transmits to
the people his personality, full of energy, with epic melodies, strong rhythms, and electronic character.
From the UK we speak to the one and only STEVE MAC. He is one of the most respected UK
producers in the game. He has over 1000 releases under his belt including original productions,
producing other artists and remixing the likes of Jamiroquai, Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson to
name but a few. Also scoring pop chart success. The former Rhythm Masters man has built up an
enviable selection of analogue hardware in his recording studio, The Bunker, and the clarity of sound
emanating out of his studio mix-downs is the backbone to the success of the Jack Said What sound.
Our man Thorsten catches up with Japans success RAYRAY. A Day With RayRay [Japan] at
the Amsterdam Dance Event 2023. The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) is without a doubt one of the
biggest gathering of artists, music lovers, industry professionals and everything else that is remotely
attached to the wonderful world of the music industry. That memorable night we got to meet RayRay we
saw her perform an incredible energy driven set and crowds that went wild. So naturally we started to
take an interest in this energetic talented woman career.
We also talk to DARREN MARTIN from the UK. Born in Jersey in the seventies he was front
and centre of the rave scene that flooded the island in the early 90's. A regular at the illegal raves and
famous Inn on The Park parties that put Jersey on the map back in the day the impact that had is still
evident in every set Darren plays out. Having left Jersey 20 years ago DJing came much later in life and
now four years sober his career and love for beats is stronger than ever. His upfront old school ravey
sound has got the attention of some notable Promoters in Spain and U.K including residencies with Kinky
Malinki, WTHouse and RUSH London. Darren has become renowned in Southern Spain and Ibiza under
his one man brand HouseWork.
From the UK we also speak to SY SEZ. We are delighted to have a moment to interview and
welcome an international DJ, Producer, Promoter, popular Radio host with Mi-Soul, an Event Organiser in
his role as partner in renowned house night “Deep Into Soul”, as well as founder of Raising Records &
Raising People Management. With a CV like that, there is very little this man doesn’t know about the
house music industry. The one and only. SY SEZ. Originally making his name in London in the midnoughties
as a resident DJ for the legendary Soul Heaven & Ministry of Sound, Sy has gone onto play
worldwide at some of the most established clubs & festivals, at times lining up with some of the biggest
names in House music Spen, Terry Hunter, Louis Vega, John Morales, Dave Lee to name just a
smattering.
Also from the UK, we catch up with SOL BROWN. London based DJ/Producer 'Sol Brown' is
definitely a name that you should be looking out for... Over the last 20 years Sol has been gracing the
decks at some of London's most renowned nightclubs. During this time, he's also held down DJ
residencies in numerous other UK cities, as well as regular radio shows on a handful of the scenes most
premiere stations. With his finger firmly on the pulse it’s no secret that Sol's firmly established himself
as key player in the UK’s soulful house music scene.
From Canada we grab a few minutes with PAT BEDEAU. When Grenadian born DJ and
Producer Pat Bedeau performs a set, he brings a blazing upbeat mix of soulful house and Deep House,
that reflects the many diverse influences from his rich musical background of Soul, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Funk,
Reggae & Rare Grooves. Pat is an original "House head" brought up on the M25 raves during the late
eighties that included Sunrise, Energy, Back to the Future and the Raindance parties’ Now one of the
modern breed of DJ/Producers, Pat has spread his sound in clubs and festivals across the UK,
Amsterdam, Miami, Mumbai, Prague, Madrid, Philadelphia, Baltimore & Ibiza.
This issue's Label Feature is with Plymouth’s [UK] very own MELODIC BEATS RECORDINGS.
Not only a record label but an events brand and podcast series Melodic Beats has made the world take
note. Booking the likes of Jody Wisternoff and curating mixes from a wide range of acts including
Graham Gold and more, and releasing many releases which are amassing strong DJ support. Melodic
beats recordings is "Quality underground house music with a hypnotic groove and an atmospheric edge".
Deep, Melodic dance music, Emotional & Progressive electronic music and everything in-between. It's
the off-shoot of the success of the Podcast.
In our events features we check out AMOR ANDALUCIA [SPAIN], and MI CASA ES SU CASA
[UK / SPAIN]. Both amazing events with fantastic promoters in Spain and in the UK.
As if all that was not enough of course we have our regular reviews and charts from the
talented and dynamic Zone crew. Also this issue we continue Zone Magazine's FREE exclusive DJ Mix
series. As usual we would like to thank all of our very many talented contributors and friends who
provide so much content, love and support for what we are doing, they are listed on the left hand
column on this page if you want to contact them directly with the latest news. From myself and the
whole Zone crew, we just wanted to say thanks again for your continued support, peace.
Amor Andalucia is a festival mainly based in
the hills of Alhuarin el Grande on the Costa del
Sol, Spain, now moving into it’s 3rd year and is
quickly becoming one of the “Go To” events of
the year.
As an attendee of the 1st ever “Amor Andalucia” festival,
I can personally attest what an amazing event this is.
Something truly special, run by one of the stalwarts of
the UK house scene…. in some of the most stunning
locations on the Costa del Sol…….this is one for the true
house heads of the generations…and really does give
something for everyone!
With venues located by the most stunning waterfalls,
the most exclusive beach clubs, the finest
undiscovered restaurants and the very finest UK and
Spanish Producers, it is an event that has become a
must go to for those that know the scene, but are
looking for something different…….
Zone magazine caught up with the curator of the
festival, Mi Soul Radio presenter, One of Faith Fanzine’s
founders (now sold to defected), and international DJ
for Faith, Defected and Glitterbox (and many more) Mr
Stuart Patterson!
Welcome back Stuart, always a
pleasure!
Thanks and likewise always a pleasure to chat
about one of my favourite events in a part of the world I
love so much.
Looks like 2023 was another
massive year for you? Faith parties
at Pikes and Hi in Ibiza, Koko and
Carnival in London, Defected Malta.
Any stand out events for you?
All the above were genuinely stand out and have
to add Defected Croatia and We Out Here festivals to thst
list.
I understand you are back in India
over the following few weeks, that
must be something really different
from the norm?
Literally just finished last night and although there
has been a few problems (it is India) we overcame and the
closing party at a place called Dreamcatcher (nestled
between the sea and a back river) was a really great party.
Obviously I know the Amor
Andalucia is a massive event for you
this year. When was the first Amor
and what inspired you to start the
event?
Is that Florida Beach alongside the
WTH crew? How was that
relationship forged?
I was introduced to Terry who runs What The
House by a fellow London DJ a few years back so knew he
did good parties in the area. I had the idea of making the
Saturday bigger and including local expats and Spanish to
the crowd. We actually lost our venue a few weeks before
the first Amor and literally a day after an old Spanish
contact, Salva got in touch to say he was working at Florida
Beach. I had DJ'd for him in Barcelona over twenty years
ago and more recently Madrid so it was a welcome surprise
to hear from him.
Who is on the line up this year?
We go house music by night so have Jimpster and
Farley n Heller headlining the nights and daytime is more a
soul, disco, funk thing so DJs like mi-soul's Ronnie Herel
plus Emma Noble and may more great DJs.
Where can people buy tickets and
anything else you would like to
mention.
We try to make sure there is a great food offer on
at each event as the local cuisine is excellent. The day
before the event officially starts (June 6th) we will take
people for a tour of Malaga and a trip to the lakes at El
Chorro on the last day as really want to share as much of
this special area alongside the music.
Full line up and passes here.
https://www.tickettailor.com/events/
positivepromotions1/942957
I have been coming to Alhaurin El Grande
regularly for the last 10 years and got to know about many
great places to put on parties. I did an event in Goa in
2020 bringing lots of people and Djs over from the UK. It
worked really well thought could try it in this lesser known
part of Spain. The first was in 2022 so this is the third one.
So, it's in different venues in the
area.
Yes we choose six different venues to keep it
interesting, most are based in Alhaurin from near the
waterfalls to deep in the Campo. The main event on the
Saturday is the only was a small distance away as it's nice
to take people to the beach.
Hi Pat. Thanks for taking the time
speak with us today! Look like
you’ve had a busy schedule
recently!! What have been the
highlights of 2023?
Well 2023 had many highlights for me Ending the
year as 228th biggest artist on Traxsource, out of 700,000
a rise from 305 in 2022 was an honour, and to have 3
tracks in the overall “top 200 of 2023” Soulful chart is
amazing too, especially considering all the other incredible
tracks released this year.
I hosted 2 Bedfunk parties at Unit 9 a custom built
warehouse space After launching the seires of parties with
last year’s Grant Nelson party, with Bedfunk artists Hannah
Khemoh and Anna-Marie Johnson performing my tracks
live. This year (2023) We brought another house legend in
the form or Richard Earnshaw along with Local Legend
Glenn Woods MK with The Wonderful Jodie Erica and
George Sida performing their hits on Bedfunk, both tracks
made it into the top 200 Soulful tracks of Traxsource 2023
so it was a real top night. Richard was also able to road
test his remix of my track with Jodie Erica “Set Me Free”
on the night, which is due for release early 2024.
For our final party of 2023 we were able to bring 3
more bonified legends to our party. Support acts were
Ricky Morrison M&S Productions producer of the chart hit
“The Girl Next Door” Back to Back with Brandon "Mr Ibiza"
Block, and headlining was a massive supporter of Bedfunk
productions none other than CJ Mackintosh, so to say we
had a good year was somewhat of an understatement.
On top of that I launched my own daytime parties
called "Afternoon Delight". The parties run from 12 or 2 till
6pm and with me hosting the whole day playing across the
board from Jazz to rare Groove, Soul, Funk, Disco and
pretty much anything with a funky beat you can dance to.
Ending up with a history of house classics to send everyone
home sweaty and on a super high vibe. These parties are
building a loyal following across a wide age group,
educating the young and bringing back fond memories for
those who were there the first time around.
Outside of my own, headlining the boutique
festival Paphos Beats was right up there, playing multiple
sets in amazing settings. Beach parties, boat parties,
rooftop parties. A really special event for the heads. The
year started with my debut Gig for What The House
4th Birthday party at Florida beach in Spain, which was
wicked. I also played Herd for the Journeymen headlining
with Booker T, who has been another big supporter of my
music, at the Sold out underneath party, this basement
venue is another great spot with a loyal following the
Journeymen have built over the years.
Another highlight was to headline the Atjazz and
friends event as the launch party for The Soullab remixes
of my track “Always” with Hannah Khemoh. The original hit
the number one spot on Traxsource and the Soullab boys
were called in to remix in their own imitable style. At this
party I got to back to back with Atjazz and the other Atjazz
Record Company artists Boomclap & Si Tew at
Birminghams Artum which was amazing. It went so well I
was asked to fill in for Si Tew at the next event with Sean
McCabe headlining. Another big honour.
And gigs for 2024?
Already in the diary for 2024 is the What The
House 5th Birthday party with Sy Sez & The Journeymen &
Sol Brown alongside another massive line up. Paphos Beats
3 in November. Afternoon Delight parties dates to be
confirmed and at least a couple Bedfunk parties to fit in, it
is already shaping up to be quite a year.
When is the next release?
2024 has 12 releases planned and the
addition of the Richard Earnshaw remix of “Set Me
Free” by Jodie Erica and a Scott Diaz remix of
“Dangerous”, with a few more remixes in the
pipeline including two for Bobby & Steve & one for
Natasha Watts. A dream collaboration with rising star
Rona Ray is also planned for a Summer release, called
“Lost & Found”. We have some more surprises planned for
the year, but can't confirm till the projects are signed off,
trust me when I say, they are massive.
What were the highlights of 2023 for
your Label Bedfunk?
The Bedfunk label has really grown and in 2023
released 8 projects, all making it into the top 20 Soulful
charts on Traxsource, with Set You Free hitting number 1.
We eleases from Anna-Marie Johnson, Hannah Khemoh,
Jodie Erica, Cleveland Jones, George Sida & a remix from
South African Duo Soullab. With many plays, features and
support from BBC, 2023 really couldn't have gone any
better for the label.
What were your favourite gigs of
2023?
14 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

When did you start putting on your
own club nights? How has running
club nights, i.e being the promoter,
changed your perspective on the
production/DJ role in the business?
Surely seeing many sides to the
industry changes how you view
things from all angles no?
Re promoting. I first started promoting in 91, way
before DJ’ing and producing. I backed off the parties as my
own DJing career started to take off but recently started up
again at the back end of 2022 with my own parties
including afternoon delight daytime all flavours party. The
Bedfunk parties were to promote the label and as they
were in Milton Keynes, I had to tailor the DJs more to DJ’s
people would know and started with big names like Grant
Nelson, to make a statement, then Richard Earnshaw and
Glenn Woods. All backed up by live PA’s of Bedfunk artists.
The final one of 2023 with CJ Mackintosh, Brandon
Block and Ricky Morrison was another big statement. It
was mix of DJs who people knew but who also fitted in with
our sound and who are also big supporters of my music
and producers who I admire and have helped shape the
house sound. Going forward I would like bring more DJs,
who support me and the label and that I like who are not
necessarily household names, but who are making a name
for themselves but that was always the plan to bring in DJs
and producers I meet on my travels that impress me and I
love what they do.
My view of the industry it is tougher than ever to
bring something different to the table, I see so many
promoters booking the same DJs time after time as they
are names but also their sound has not progressed. I’ve
always been about cutting edge music and moving forward.
As I try to do when I produce and DJ, always trying to push
the envelope and keep it fresh. All about the new tunes as
well as throwing in the odd classic, not the other way
round.
Amen to that! Best of luck for 2024
Pat, We’re sure it will be a massive
year for you!
Thanks guys, appreciate it!

Born in Spain, and over 25 years of experience
behind him, Ismael Rivas, has amply demonstrated
why he is one of the best DJ's in Spain and abroad.
We could describe him as many ways, but the
easiest one and with the better we can identify is
with his music: own style, with lots of character, with
which he transmits to the people his personality, full
of energy, with epic melodies, strong rhythms, and
electronic character.
A pioneer of many trends in electronic music in our country, Ismael has
been always at the vanguard in his style, since the Progressive House
which became fashionable during his stage as residency at “Space Of
Sound” for 12 years to the most select Melodic House & Techno that
distinguishes his sets nowadays.
Recognized and respected by all the professionals of
the sector and also for the clubbers, Ismael has reaped numerous
awards highlighting as best Spanish resident given for the prestigious
magazine "Deejay Mag" in 2011 for 3th time. Thanks to this recognition
he had the opportunity to cross our borders and play in some of the
most important clubs of the world, in countries such Space Miami USA,
Womb Japan, Plazma Bulgari, Pacha Colombia, Haoman 17 Israel, Pacha
Morocco, La mucca Italy, Le Rock Belgium, Cafe Jeri Brazil, Circus Mexico,
Stereo Montreal, and many more countries Austria, Switzerland,
Venezuela, UK, Dominican Republic, Germany, Tunisia, Brazil, France.
Vista club, or Sankeys.
Our man Luz, recently joined us from Spain, has a chat with Ismael to
find out more........
16 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

His recognition also comes as producer, with more
than 500 productions, Ismael is one of the few Spanish
producers who can presume to have his own album “Face
Up” and is able to get publish in the best labels, so classic
as Star 69, Yoshitoshy, Armada, La Factoría, Stereo
Productions, Nervous, or Global Underground, in the most
trendies: Suara, Brise, Monique Musique, Serkal, Monza,
Material, Innocent Music, Serkal, Oko Records, Asymetrik,
Uniback, Beatfreak, Radiant, Go Deeva, Awen Rec,
Freegrand, Aletheia ...
2020 started with some changes for Ismael, he
was on board in a new project his own party called CIRCLE,
based on Melodic House & Techno stuff for Madrid
electronic clubbing scene until now (2023) . Actually, you
can listen his radio show all Saturdays from 11 to 12 A.M
@circleradioshow at Unika FM.
How did you start in the music
scene?
In the 90's. My dad and friends were working in
restaurants, pubs and clubs by nights. A few of them were
DJ's too, and others were working in the BEST clubs of
Madrid. So It was no scape for me. I starting mixing tapes
in that time till now!
If you hadn't been a DJ, what would
you have liked to been?
What I was before doing. A Real Madrid soccer
player. After 10 years in the club I couldn't continue by a
serius injury, so I start my other passion the music. The 2
things I 've always LOVEd with my family.
What is a normal day in your life?
During the week I spend much of the time in the
studio and I teaching to my students. Afternoons with my
family. And the weekends traveling & gigs. And if there is
not gigs traveling with my family. I LOVE to travel. In my
free time I also spend time with me dog!
How does Ismael Rivas see the
Spanish scene currently?
After the pandemic time, I think spanish scene is
having a new boom, New clubs and festivals, New
promoters, but the truth is, I still missing more small clubs
in small cities, like before. I miss my own scene with the
Styles that I máster. Progressive House and melodic
techno. You can still find It in a few countries in Europe,
Asia or South América.
After 25 years of a brilliant career,
what is left for you to do?
The truth is I have too many things left to do. First
to make music and more music. Chasing that track, that
everyone Will play. And continue conquering borders and
clubs around the world, apart from helping to train a new
DJ's generation, they look very strong, specially at the
producer music level.
What do you like more to play music
or produce music?
The truth is that it is a dilemma for me!! But if I
had to tell you something I would say to play my songs
hahaha, see people dance and raise their arms with
something that you have created and say to yourself
inside... now yes!!! Priceless!!!! It is a sensation that is
difficult to match and explain, it is like an adrenaline rush!!
How much do you usually rest
between projects?
The less the better!!! If I am focused on
production and I have many ideas I can't stop!! And this is
one of those times!! Right now I have about 4 or 5 releases
between now and January end. Plus a bunch that I have
prepared until summer. Many of them collaborations with
national artists like Pressurized or Luke García and other
international ones that are to come. Apart from the launch
of my own Circle records label that will be released in
February!
What do you value most about
working with your colleagues or
when you enter a new DJ booth?
Above all I value respect and education!!! Two
values that unfortunately in today's society are valued less
and less, knowing who you are, where you are and what
place you occupy is fundamental in life and beyond DJing!!
And bother you for. Knowing where and with whom you are
going to play seems essential to me!!
Do you listen to other musical
genres besides electronic music?
Of course !! Man does not live on electronics
alone!!! Rock and pop from the 80s, 90s and 2000s bands
like U2, Depeche mode, Queen are fundamental for me and
singer-songwriters like Orozco or Leiva from whom I don't
miss a single concert!!!
Seeing how artists like Carl Cox (61)
are still active Or David Guetta (56
Until when do you see yourself on
stage?
This is a simple and short answer, I don't think
about it!!!!
18 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

What is the best and worst thing
about being an artist, all this time?
I think the best thing is everything except for
one exception, the airports!!! It's been a long time since
I can go by train, I'll go by train!! I have wasted many
hours of my life in an airport with nothing productive or
to do unless they give you problems for everything!!!
Do you like doing radio? When was
your first experience?
Radio has always been a pending subject for
me! Let me explain. I have had a program on loca FM,
Ibiza global Radio, and now I am currently on Unika FM
every Saturday at mid-morning, but I have not really
enjoyed it to the fullest! My voice is not very radiofriendly
and I have always been shy about speaking, so I
speak justly and I dedicate myself to doing what I
do best, selecting good music and giving
something different to the listener!
How do you see fans before and
now?
And as for the fans, I was already saying it
before, right now there is a large volume of people at
festivals and high-media events, I miss the public
enjoying live music more, without cell phones, without
networks and other distractions that they do. What they
really do is remove the focus from what is truly
important, which is not the DJ, nor the staging nor the
technology, but the music!!! And that there is a more
varied club scene musically speaking, not only based on
techno and tech house, that people can meet other types
of artists in smaller events, without having to have a
headliner if or if for the room. fill up, that didn't happen
a few years ago, and in my humble opinion I think there
was more club culture.
Tell us about your new book.
Well it's called The Mix! And it is written
together with two high school friends at Campus FP. It is
a guide for one of the subjects of the DJ FP, the subject
of editing and mixing control, and tries to give a clear
and simple vision to the students of the processes that
are involved in sound processing both in the studio and
in direct sound. It is an immense field that is often
difficult to tame! But here's The Mix to help them out!
" I dedicate myself to doing what I do best,
selecting good music and giving something
different to the listener! "
Born in Jersey in the seventies Darren Martin
was front and centre of the rave scene that
flooded the island in the early 90's.
A regular at the illegal raves and famous Inn on The Park parties that
put Jersey on the map back in the day the impact that had is still
evident in every set Darren plays out. Having left Jersey 20 years
ago DJing came much later in life and now four years sober his
career and love for beats is stronger than ever. His upfront old
school ravey sound has got the attention of some notable
Promoters in Spain and U.K including residencies with Kinky Malinki,
WTHouse and RUSH London. Playing long sets is how Darren has
become renowned in Southern Spain and Ibiza under his one man
brand HouseWork. HouseWork has grown to put on some of the
best pool, club and boat parties in Marbella since 2020. In the last
two years Ibiza has been a second home for Darren gaining the
attention of the most beautiful club in the world, Es Paradis who
asked Darren and HouseWork to host their closing party at the end
of 2023. 2024 sees him taking the party back to his home town of
Jersey for an all dayer with Jon Pleased Wimmin. With further parties
planned at Es Paradis in 2024 and a debut for HouseWork in
Gibraltar there are no plans to slow down for this House Head.
I stubbled apon Darren when I noticed an add for a small clubnight in
the Sounth of Spain, so after a little research, I figured why not give
him a shout!..........
20 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

Who is Darren Martin, the person?
I am a 47 year old guy who identifies as the same. I
mean you have to be clear these days don’t you. Sometimes
I identify as an 18 year old raver stuck in 1994 but can’t see
that does any harm. I love House music and I love DJing. I
was born in Jersey but now live in Malaga moving here
nearly 20 years ago. I love my own company as much as I
love a crowded rave in a warehouse on an industrial estate.
Everything is about the balance these days. I take life far
more as it comes than I did when I was younger chasing
something I thought was at the end of a rainbow. I have
learnt like most people my age keeping it all in the day is
what gets you through the 40’s unscathed. Zoom out and
this crazy world is all too much to take in so I keep my world
small to help reduce the chaos. I just go with the flow which
took me 40 odd years to work out to be fair. Getting sober
four years ago after a mental health wobble has changed my
life for the better in a way I never thought possible. After a
bit of therapy and some beautiful people in my circle it’s all
groovy these days.
Tell us about the things you like to do
NOT music related?
Weekends are all about gigging but outside that I
enjoy the med lifestyle. If lazy days with loved ones down
the beach throwing down seafood and watching the waves
was an Olympic sport I’d be up there with the best of them.
If its not slowed down its sped up for me so snowboarding,
Motocross and anything with adrenaline freaks generally I’m
all in. My 1984 BMX champion trophy is still there on the
shelf at home to keep the dream of riding for Mongoose one
day live but guess I need to let that go now.
Digital / CD Or Vinyl, Or a mix? And
Why?
From a sound point of view I get those that say you
don’t get the crackle or the nostalgic rich sound on digital
that you get on Vinyl but then hearing an acapella in perfect
key over the top of a bassline and groove you have chopped
together yourself can’t be achieved the same way with Vinyl
so its digital all the way for me. The effects and the energy
you can create on digital you can’t do on Vinyl. The pointless
argument of learning on Vinyl is the only way to call yourself
a proper DJ comes up for some old schoolers now and then
but for me DJing is about dropping the right tune at the right
time and understanding the crowd and the vibe and the
direction of the night so if you can pull that off with Vinyl fair
play but sod carrying those boxes round the place when you
can stick your tunes in your pocket.
Best club you have played and why?
For me its all about the crowd and energy in
the room that makes this answer. I have played in
some big clubs that look incredible but have no soul or
the sound is bouncing all over the shop. When it’s just
the right size to be intimate and you can see the faces of the
clubbers and the sound is on point and the promotor has got
the line up bang on then that’s where it’s at for me. So my
answer is Tantra in Ibiza last year. Everything came together
making it feel like the best club in the world. Wall to wall
house heads with a perfect sound system and a bunch of DJs
knowing what the crowd wanted and when they wanted it.
Epic.
Tell us about Jersey.
I haven’t lived there for 20 years but still go back
and see family and friends as often as I can. It’s a beautiful
island that I just outgrew in my 20’s but I can’t say a bad
word about it really. It was great growing up there in the
90’s. I mean the government are all on acid it seems these
days and it’s tough for the younger generation to get on the
property ladder but everywhere has its politics I guess so the
locals just get on with it. It has some big memories for me
and I love going back.
Tell us about the Scene on Jersey
now, and then.
Due to the idiots running the island venues haves
suffered and closed down recently which doesn’t help
although there are some great promoters putting on events
and keeping things strong in the electronic music scene.
Back in the day when I was partying events were limited but
the famous Inn on the Park raves stood out as the place to
enjoy a good tear up. I put on a night called the Dove Days
and also put out a radio show by the same name all in
honour of those early 90’s rave ups at Inn on the Park. The
guys are still putting on reunion nights for the club which is
great to see. Some readers may remember The Venue
another big named club back in the day that had a lot of DJs
pass through in the glory days. The younger generation are
pushing the techno sound now on the island which is cool to
see too. There is a night call The Loft which has a good
following and a few others that I have seen. The DnB scene
is big too. Not my bag but the younger generation love it
and good to see them really in to it. As for the future I am
looking to put on some parties under my HouseWork brand
bringing that old school sound back to the island. The first
party is this summer with Jon Pleased Wimmin and Jonathan
Ulysess joining me for a right naughty 90’s bash. Can’t wait.
Another one at Christmas then two a year until the wheels
fall off. I am passionate about bringing the party to Jersey in
the next few years for sure. There is room for the over 40’s
to come back out and party.
What is your take on all the fake DJ’s
now?
There is fake everything isn’t there. Fake news,
fake tits, fake clothes, fake people. If you want to fake DJing
and you get off on fooling people I couldn’t care less. I DJ to
make people feel what I feel and you can’t do that faking
that’s all I know.
" For me its all about the crowd and energy in
You are the last person left on earth
after the apocalypse, what 5 tracks
do you have to listen to till the end
and why? [Any style]
Zero 7 – Destiny
Wakes me up every morning. Its just a tune that makes me
feel like I am being eased out of sleep ready to start the day.
Well it kinda is but you get me.
Stone Roses – This is the one
The first album I ever got my hands on that I still listen to
today. Timeless
Massive attack – Hymn of the Big Wheel
Reminds me of travelling around Asia without a care in the
world
Pink Floyd - Wish you were here
Just a dark moody tune that I can always go to and lose it
for 5 minutes
Your Love – Frankie Knuckles
I often play this at the end of the night and if there are
people still on the dancefloor from hours before they just
raise their hands with me and we sing. Bliss.
anything?
I only started using social media 3 years ago and it
has propelled my DJ career for sure getting out there and
networking with other likeminded DJs and promoters and
sharing my sound. I only use it for DJ promotion so the real
me doesn’t get shown much if that makes sense. You can
say all you want about my DJing but you don’t know me as a
person so little for people to go after if they wanted. I see all
the commentary on people getting booked off having a
couple of million followers and how that sucks for us DJs
with more ability and love for the beats but it is a money
game the high up the ladder you get so I get it. Social media
helps but it is not everything.
Growing an online fanbase will probably help you
get booked at massive gigs even without ability but as I
have said give me a sweaty club in London or Ibiza full of
house heads in to it over a headline show at Ultra any day.
When I see DJs at Hi or similar playing to a crowd of phones
held up its just not about the music. These people just want
an Instagram shot of this superstar DJ rather than buzzing
off the music. The main reason you see these DJs playing
intimate competition gigs is to get back what they lost when
they got huge. So social media is what everyone reading this
would probably say. A blessing and a curse. Use it for what
you want it for don’t let it rule your life and if your arse hurts
its time to stop scrolling and get off the bog and do
something more productive.
House Party / Small club / Superclub
or Festival and why? [DJ and fan]
Small club all day long to DJ at and to rave in.
Seeing the same faces pop up throughout the night buzzing
on tunes and giving you that nod they are in to what you are
in to is what the House scene is all about for me. That can
get lost in a superclub and festivals are there just to get
spangled not to really enjoy the music I find. That said you
can get caught by surprise at a festival seeing someone you
hadn’t planned to and it going off. That can be special I must
admit. Answer still a small sweaty club though for sure.
Tell us about DJ Darren Martin’s DJ
sets. [Music and style of set etc]
Depending on the time of set or party I will
change it up a bit but I tend to get booked for my
upfront vocal and ravey style with a nod to the early
nineties in every set. If I can squeeze in some edits and
reworks and tease those old tunes over a thumping bassline
then I am in my sweet spot. I lose it a bit in the music so
never a look down type DJ. If the mix is in and I am loving
the tune as much as the crowd you can definitely tell. I have
seen some pro shots where it looks like I am in pain I am so
in to it but its pure joy coming out for sure. Every tune has
to have a belting vocal too which is always part of my
selecting. It has to be a great song first with a hook and
bridge and melody then the four on the floor comes after.
" Depending on the
time of set or party I will
change it up a bit but I
tend to get booked for
my upfront vocal and
ravey style with a nod
to the early nineties in
every set "
The pros and cons of Social media,
and what should we do about it if
24 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

Who would you like to play with who
you have not, and why?
In the last few years I have played with some
proper legends of the game but for this answer I will go out
there and say playing a down and dirty B2B with Skream in
Berlin to wharehouse of nutters would be fun. From a
HouseWork point of view keeping it old school I want to book
Jeremy Healy for our Jersey Christmas bash and do a B2B
along the way later this year.
Worst DJ set you can remember,
what happened?
Has to be a HouseWork party I put on during covid
at a venue in Malaga. We broke a few rules and the party
got a fair bit of attention from around town as the day grew
in to night. The biggest crowd I had pulled since starting up
the brand. I jumped on the decks buzzing as hadn’t played
in ages and we had a right vibe going. I didn’t get past my
first tune and the police pulled the plug. So yeah that’s worst
gig as only played for about 60 seconds. Gutted.
London, Ibiza or Spain[DJ and Fan]
don’t see anywhere else. People come to the island to really
let go and have a good time and when all the other
ingredients hit the parties to play and rave at can’t be
beaten.
Any words for up and coming DJ’s?
Just do your own thing and play because you love it
and you love the music not for the money or to be the best
or even to get gigs. Do it for the love then the rest comes
without trying. There are no rich DJs so don’t think it starts
raining tenner’s if you get notoriety. I am not sure you need
a thing really or need to be different you just need to feel it.
If you are in to it others will be. From a technical point of
view use your ears as your guide not wave forms or cues or
other tricks. Use them after but learn with your ears! The
best bit of DJ kit you have.
Any last words?
Thanks to anyone who has read this and thanks to
Paul@ Zone for the opportunity to let my DJ story go like
this. This world is throwing some heavy punches at as all
lately but music will always make us feel good so go listen to
as much as you can. Peace and love to all and have a great
2024. See some of you on the dancefloor x
That is a tough one as I say it all depends on the
crowd but I will go with Ibiza. Ibiza still has that release you

" Growing up in the 80’s with a ten-year older
sister, I found myself being quite heavily
influenced by the 80’s electronic pop sound "

Yes Sol: great to see you again!
Yes, Terry – Thanks for inviting me on!
What was the music that inspired you
most growing up and how has that
influenced the music that you produce
today?
Growing up in the 80’s with a ten-year older
sister, I found myself being quite heavily influenced by
the 80’s electronic pop sound. A chunk of the mainstream
pop productions at the time were really going to town with the
electronic synths, Korg/Roland etc. I kinda feel that stayed
with me with a lot of those same 80’s synth sounds now being
utilised in my own productions.
How did you start out as a DJ? What
music got you into the dance scene,
what did you start out playing?
Being a teenager in the 90’s I found myself heavily
into the rave/jungle/drum & bass side of things. In 1994 I got
my first set of decks and started my progression as a
bedroom DJ (mixing drum and bass). Over the next 3 years I
found myself getting more and more into the house scene and
inevitably mixing that music. In 1997 I got my first club
booking and have been playing out ever since.
Was there/is there anyone who is still,
or who has been, particularly
influential in your musical journey?
There are so many people that have been super
influential to me over the years, I wouldn’t even know where
to begin.
What have been your personal
favourite moments in your musical
career? Gigs, Productions etc
My personnel favourite moment in my music career
would have to be one of my bookings for Groove Odyssey at
Ministry of Sound. When I was a young teenager growing up
in Devon my mum used to always buy me a copy of Mixmag. I
think I was about 14years old and seeing Rulin at Ministry of
Sound having a full page spread within the magazine. The
DJ’s on that line-up included Jazzy M, CJ Mackintosh, Phil
Asher and Paul Trouble Anderson. Fast forward to this above
mentioned event I found on the bill, at Ministry, playing in the
same room with those exact same DJ’s. On a personal note,
that was real special for me.
What has been the best concert/
event you have ever been to.
Whether you have played there or
not?
Glastonbury will always be up there with my
favourite events. Growing up in Devon me and my friends
would go almost every year. I haven’t been lucky enough to
play there as yet, but that’s right up there on my list.
What music do you normally play at
home these days?
I don’t actually listen to too much house music at
home, I’ve always been really into hip-hop and neo-soul. That
hasn’t changed. I would definitely say that my love for neosoul
can be heard within a whole chuck of my productions.
Tell us about the clubs you like to play
in? and what do you prefer…..festivals,
clubs, bars?
Theres not many venues that I don’t like playing in.
In an indoor club scenario, I’m probably at my happiest in
front of an 800 – 1000 capacity crowd. Thinking about it,
that’s generally been the same since I was a teenager.
Festivals are obviously always great for me too. Especially
when the suns out.
Tell us about your next projects, what
does the next 12 months have lined up
for Sol Brown and the Love Stay
Recordings brand?
I’m currently in the process of finishing off a follow
up to my ‘Shine Down’ track with the legend, Colonel Red.
This one’s going to called ‘Something New’ and should be
dropping on my label around February time. I’ve already got a
whole load of own productions and remixes lined up for the
label in 2024, so its going to be full steam ahead from
February/March time.
Where are you next gigs? When is the
next release?
I’m going to be quite busy in the studio throughout
January and February but already have numerous gigs lined
up for early March onwards. I’m particularly looking forward to
What The House’s 5th Birthday (meets) Mi Casa Es Su Casa,
at Florida Beach, Spain in March.
Digital / Vinyl or CD's and why?
Digital format for me. I was obviously a vinyl child
however, having the capability to make my own edits at home
in the afternoon and play them out in the club that night is
incomparable.
Where do you see the future of
Electronic music? Any particular
trends you see moving forward
Electronic music as a whole is constantly changing.
Trends come and go on regular. As a DJ, it’s so important that
you move with the times whilst staying true to your sound
and ethic. If you can’t do that, there is unfortunately a strong
possibly that you will inevitably get left behind.
One of my favourite tracks of this year
was your remix of Tess Leah and Mind
State's "For You" released on Raising
Records. And one of my favourite
tracks ever is "Believe" which you
made with Hannah Khemoh and
released on your label Love stay
recordings. What are your own top 5
records that you have produced?
Thanks man, that means a lot!! In relation to my
personal top 5 own productions. It would probably have to be
the below (in no particular order). That was actually pretty
hard to narrow down. From initial idea to release, I have
generally spent quite a bit of time on all of my productions.
This means that they are all pretty special to me in their own
way.
• Sol Brown ft. Angela Johnson - Get Over (Main Mix)
[Love Stay Recordings]
• Mind State ft. Tess Leah - For You (Sol Brown Remix)
[Raising Records]
• Sol Brown - Solomons Groove (Original Mix)
[Unquantize]
• Vick Lavender ft. Angel-A - Deep & Wide (Sol Brown
Remix) [Gotta Keep Faith]
• Sol Brown ft. Selina Campbell - Wide Awake (Original
Mix) [Makin' Moves]
Thanks Sol, great chatting to you and
I’ll see you in March
Thank you guys!

Mi Casa Es Su Casa is a Soulful house party that already has
a long history on the London scene. For over 20 years their
ever energetic leader Colin “Col” Lovelace has been tirelessly
criss-crossing London, giving out his CDs and Flyers, to bring
people into his “Mi Casa” Family where they have provided
the parties and the soundtrack to a generation of clubbers.
MCESC has obtained a reputation over the years for being a club night
where many Artists, DJs and Promoters from the Industry attend to let
their hair down, or mingle and chat with others in the industry…. or just
have a drink and enjoy the music.
Mi Casa Es Su Casa started as a DJ/Artist Management & Promotions
Agency back in Jan 2001.
Once they realised the demand there was for the artists they were
providing, they decided to use their connections to launch a party on 11th
June 2004 at the Cosmo Bar in London.
That night, Mi Casa Es Su Casa was truly born…….
It was such a success, that Col decided he had no choice but to put on at
least one more party…..20 years later the brand continues to go from
strength to strength, and shows (like Colin’s energy and love the scene)
absolutely no signs of slowing down anytime soon!
Luckily here, at Zone, we have someone on the inside….. someone who
has worked with….and is very well connected to the brain behind the
brand, Mr Colin “Col” Lovelace……. Zone’s Terry Hobbs caught up with the
main man himself just after his recent event in Brixton, London…. to talk
about the nitty gritty of the promotions world, especially in London
Town!!!

Easy Col, great Party again last night!
Thanks for having me over!
Mate it’s been a while since we’ve partied together, we
had such a great time, you absolutely smashed it.
How have the last few years been for
you? Especially considering we’ve
obviously had Covid restrictions. How
do you feel that has all that impacted
on both your parties, and the scene?
We’ve been fortunate to build a brand with that has
organically developed a loyal following, who have become
family. We are so grateful for their continued support over the
years. Covid was a strange time, in which we used it as an
opportunity to create our live streaming events from my good
friend’s studio in the basement of his house. We did our last
physical party just as we went into lockdown, and launched our
live stream 2 months later, bro it was like we never left. Covid
didn’t stop us putting on events, we just had to adjust to the
fact that everyone was now at home. As there was uncertainty,
we said we would do one or two shows until the restrictions are
lifted, 18 months later we were still on air. It was a great way
to keep our family connected and the music alive.
Love that, the “family” aspect of the
brand, you always seem to see new
faces at every party also. What would
you say the ethos is behind the Mi
Casa Parties?
The spirit of our parties is to create a space where
like-minded friendly party people come together to dance to
Deep, Soulful, Latin & Underground House. It’s also been a
place where our crowd get to hear new, up and coming talent
from our scene. We have managed to keep an intimate feel to
our parties as well as giving everyone the space to express
themselves on the dancefloor. It’s wonderful to witness and we
also love meeting new people who have come through word of
mouth. It really adds to that friend, of a friend of a friend vibe.
You absolutely love that, don’t you?
The bringing of people together part of
it, the community spirit of it all. What is it
that does it for you?
Some promoters get stressed by the planning and
organising of events, but its something I love to do. I love
having a vision then seeing how it turns out. It’s like cooking a
certain dish for the first time and everyone loving how it tastes.
It’s great seeing people happy and it also pleases me that we
can create a platform for new DJs to be heard.
MCESC has been going for 22 years.
What motivated you to start the brand.
How did you see the scene at that time.
And What were your expectations?
Yes that right, wow, I guess never really think about
how long we have been going as, I try to treat every party with
the same energy as our first one. I always had an eclectic taste
in music and used to run Soul and Funk parties with my Brother
Kevin, for a about 5 years before we started MCESC.
During this time I met a House DJ called Special
Edition, who we used to get to play the final set. We did a
number of nights on a boat on the Thames called the Yacht
Club. As the House side things took off, we started to book
more House DJs and therefore decide to launch a new brand
dedicated solely to House. When we told the manager at the
Yacht Club what we wanted to do, he said sure anything you
want “my house is your house” this how the name was born Mi
Casa Es Su Casa. The plan was to not grow too big and the
have bi-monthly parties to keep it consistent but to not too
regular it becomes boring. This is want we still do to this day.
What do you feel have been the
biggest changes in the industry during
that time? What have been the
positives/negatives?
I think the introduction of CDs and music being
available online was a big change. This gave DJs access to a lot
more music and some tunes became diluted but also great
tunes became widespread music quicker that before. Internet
radio stations has also been a great source of hearing DJs from
all over the world and helped to educate music listeners. This
also meant that party goers were becoming younger.
How do you feel about the health of the
deep & soulful house scene at the
moment. how do you see it in the next
5-10 years? And your role in that?
The scene has suffered and lost ravers to the many
different genres some old and new. Peoples tastes change and
they gravitate to the different types and energies of sounds. I
do also see that this has also caused some people to stay loyal
to deep & soulful house. I see this type of house as timeless
and will continue to mature like a fine wine. Its also nice to see
some of the local talent also now making tunes, something that
I think will also grow.
What do you put the success of your
brand down to?
The way the brand has grown organically and seeing
where some of the DJs who started at Mi Casa and where they
are now. I also love bouncing ideas off my wife Princess, who
keeps me grounded which helps with my decision making.
What advice would you give to
someone going into the promotions
game these days?
I would say be original in what you do, do it for the
love of music and not to make money. Trust in the decisions
that you make, be flexible. Also play close attention to
constructive criticism and act on it.
What music got you into the dance
scene & what is your music of today?
Going to parties in fields, disused aircraft hangers and
warehouses got me into the dance scene. People always use to
share with me what were the happening places to go, I also
developed a love for afterparties, maybe because it felt
unrestricted and raw.
ESSENTIALDANCEMUSIC 31

What are the top 3 favourite clubs that
you’ve held events in and why?
First place must go to is Nomad in Old Street. We were
there for 9 years, and this became known as our home. We
loved that it was on 2 floors, and we were able to collaborate
with other promoters as they hosted the other floor. Loved it.
Also, the Boat Parties on the Dutch Master, as there something
special about being on a boat especially in good weather. You
also have added bonus a captive audience, if you’re on the boat
you have to stay on the boat, lol. Another favourite has got to
be hosting the upstairs room at POW, for Deep into Soul. This is
the smallest room in the venue, but the vibe is second to none.
What a great spot.
Do you have a favourite event that
you have done? What are your
favourite events to hold?
I love hosting my Birthday party in February as this
always has an amazing turn our and if some people only come
out once for the year, this where they would come. Boat parties
are my favourite to organise, although it’s a bigger event, there
is not much to worry about once we set sail.
How does going to other events and
experiences influence how you see
your own?
I really enjoy the vibe and energy at the SunceBeat
festival. You get to meet people from all over the world from
different walks of life with a common interest in music. I met
some wonderful people there. I also love the Southport festival
in London mainly for the funfair rides as it combines my love of
music and my trill of high rides.
What has been the best concert/event
you have ever been to. Outside of your
own events?
I also love Deep and Electronic dance music, so one of
my Favs is a London Warehouse party called Half Baked and I
also go to Fuse. They start in the evening and have amazing
after parties. The crowd is has that European feel to it, with
non-stop partying and energy.
Who’s been your favourite DJ's?
Corr!! This is very tough question. I love any DJs who
plays with passion that resonates onto the Dancefloor. A DJ
that reads the crowd and plays for them and not themselves.
So hard just to choose just one mate. I will name a few - Rap
Saunders, Carlene A, Sarah Finesse, Steve Harrington & Jimmy
Read!
Best moments at one of your parties?
So many people have met their partners at Mi Casa
and are still together today. I love when people celebrate their
anniversaries with us. Loveliest moments is when my family
come to celebrate my Birthday, my older children, my Mum,
Brother, Sister, Cousins and best friends were all there.
What is the best/worst part about
working in this industry?
Trying a new venue, DJ or concept and seeing it work
out great, is one of the best feelings in the world for me. Also
working with my Wife and Brother as partners is also a
pleasure. The worst part, is when venue owners don’t share the
same vision as you and want it all to be about money and
numbers through the door.
You have doing a lot working with the
local community. Tell us a little more
about that and how you got into that?
About 5 years ago I became a coach and mentor to
young boys, by volunteering for a local charity. I learnt a hell of
a lot about myself as well as the needs of our boys. It’s been a
fantastic journey of self-discovery and personal development.
It’s so rewarding to be in a position of value and making a
different to the lives of others. Over past few years I have also
trained and now become a qualified Therapist working with
children and also parents. There is such a demand for this
work, especially since Covid.
You must see & hear a lot of
challenging stories?
I have heard some heart wrenching stories of despair,
poverty and in justice. Some of these boys need guidance,
nurturing, a sense of belonging and love. They also need to
know that someone will be there consistently for them.
What was the music that inspired you
most growing up and how has that
influenced the music that you promote
today?
I grew up on Rare Grooves, Soul, Jazz and Reggae. I
think the bassline of Reggae and the vocals of Soul really
inspired and shaped my taste in music. Jazz, especially Sax and
Piano also played a massive role in what a like to hear.
Tell us about your next projects?
What’s getting you excited?
Next, we will be looking more summer boat parties.
Would love to be involved in one of the popular outdoor
festivals and also do a warehouse party with an underground
vibe. We also love working with other promotions, so more
collaborations.
We have our What The House vs Mi
Casa Es Su Casa party in March. Please
tell the readers your reasons for
getting involved in this party and how
you see the international future of Mi
Casa Es Su Casa?
We have wanted to have a party abroad for a long
time and Spain is very close to my heart as I’ve been going
there for years to holiday or party. Lisbon is also a place I
would love to hold a event. I was so pleased to be offered the
opportunity to be involved in a What the House, knowing what
you bring to an event and how hard you work to make things
happen, it’s a no brainer to work with you. We really can’t wait
to bring our vibe to Spain as it is a natural union and the
passion of the two brands will be awesome. Roll on March.
A Day With RayRay at the
Amsterdam Dance Event 2023
_______________________________________________________________________
The Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) is without a doubt
one of the biggest gathering of artists, music lovers, industry
professionals and everything else that is remotely attached
to the wonderful world of the music industry. With meeting,
seminars, interviews, events off al sorts one will never know
who you will meet or where you will end up in this crazy
music filled landscape.
Last year during our ADE endeavors the elusive GRAVEDGR invited
us to watch his show. That is how we ended up at the Traphaus
event at club Up (Amsterdam). With a stellar line-up from Whipped
Cream, KURA, Juicy M and many others we knew this night was
going to be good. We never expected what happened next. During
the night we got introduced to the ever friendly and hardworking
RayRay. Hailing from the beautiful city of Taipei this purple haired
bundle of energy is probably one the most talented and loudest
Taiwanese export products.
That memorable night we got to meet RayRay we saw her perform
an incredible energy driven set and crowds that went wild. So
naturally we started to take an interest in this energetic talented
woman career. Over this last year we saw her releasing a barrage of
tracks, a new album, a remix album and play a tons of high profile
shows world wide. As we kept in contact with her during the year
we where excited to link up with her again at ADE.
36 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

RayRay.
" I listen to different kind of music daily, and I’m
always trying to expand my music universe, plus I
also have a lot of collabs which are different music
genres. It’s always fun to play different sets and
interact with the audience "

As ADE came closer she asked us which of her
events we wanted to attend and she would make sure we
where on her guestlist. In this day and age usually we see
an artist play only one event a day but during ADE
everything turns in to a madhouse. With RayRay playing as
much as three events in one night we kinda got curious
how does this energy filled woman does it and we asked to
join her on her ADE conquest.
On Tuesday morning we met up for breakfast
where she introduced is to her tourmanager and
photographer Joel and another one of her many friend Jake
Gitt (Manager to i.a. Sikdope). Here we set up a plan for
the big day happening Wednesday and got a glimpse in the
life from a high profile artist. Where most people think it is
just about showing up play for one hour and go home and
enjoy day off. Nothing could have been further from the
truth, granted sometimes it will be like this for some artists
but those that want to make it the top enjoy a different
lifestyle.
With RayRay showing us her schedule we know we
would be in for a fully packed and interesting day. RayRay
had scheduled meetings with festival organizers,
interviews, photo shoots, studio sessions, dinners, mixers,
preparing mixes and many other random meetings that
suddenly got scheduled in between. Spending the day with
her would be one of the craziest days and most fun days
we had this year.
RayRay would be playing three events at the first
night of ADE. The first one would be the ADE mixer from
EDM.com, second would be the big one at club Air the
Symphony Showcase from Timmy Trumpet and last one
would be the FVCK GENRES party at club NYX.
This night we would embark on a legendary night.
Every stop we where greeted with great hospitality, Shout
out to Air Amsterdam, their hospitality was one of the best
I have ever encountered. Everyone is so friendly and
helpful, from security up to stage managers. everyone
made sure that we where very comfortable.
During this incredible night we saw RayRay play
vastly different sets, a true icon behind the decks. She has
an amazing microphone and crowd control. RayRay knows
how to entertain but fore mostly knows how to read a
crowd and anticipate their energy level. Each location had a
very different crowd but she managed to blow up the roof
each and every time she was playing. We seen her sing her
own songs, climb on the turntables, dance behind the
decks, taking time for her fans and taking pictures or just
talking with them. During all this time she is smiling from
ear to ear and being friendly to everyone. She has this
magnetic likeable personality that just draws one in and
makes one instantly like her. That is probably why her
fanbase keeps on growing. Once you have seen her play
live you can only enjoy the music and want to listen it all
the time. In between her gigs we walked through the rain
to visit label brother Moksi at his event. Even tho our Uber
cancelled and we had to walk though the drizzeling rain,
her mood never dampened and she was even eager to
answer some of our questions.
Spending time with you was a crazy exp. Usually you play
1 gig a day. Now you played 3 at the same night.
How do you prepare for such a
night? Cause all 3 gigs where vastly
different from eachother. Did you
know that these venues and crowd
would be different or what is your
process with nights like this?
I started DJing before becoming a producer. I
used to be a resident DJ in the night club, so being openformateed
and reading the crowds are always my
strongest strength as a DJ.
I listen to different kind of music daily, and
I’m always trying to expand my music universe, plus
I also have a lot of collabs which are different music
genres. It’s always fun to play different sets and
interact with the audience.
I noticed at some gigs you prefer
using your mic (singing your songs)
more then others is there a reason
for it?
I enjoying performing my songs. I think it’s also
a signature move for me as an artist. I feel like being a
performer is about everything, not only about the music
selection but also about the experience you are providing
to the audience.
Well ADE was more then just some
gigs for you. Also you had a load of
meetings. How do you deal with like
5 days of virtual no sleep and still
manage do to all your work?
I love being busy. I love meeting people and
playing shows. I think the opportunity of being part of ADE
is more important. Plus, I can always sleep on the flights.
Loads of people do meeting just to
have meeting during ADE. What
about you? What is your approach
here?
To me, ADE is more about catching up with the
friends, artists, and the people I’m planning to work with in
the world and playing shows. It’s always nice to share with
my artist friends the experience and connections I have in
Asia. I always hit them up beforehand and try to set up
meetings, but to be honest, everyone is busy at ADE. I
prefer to have the more flexible schedule for the meetings.
38 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

What was your most exciting
moment this ADE? And how
stressfull was ADE for you?
I enjoyed all the shows I played this year. I did a
crazy b2b with Nostalgix, and went wild at Sinphony Label
night. I had so much fun with my beloved Barong Family
friends, and I reunioned with Tribal Trap x Actuation
and EDM.com family! It’s never stressful for me, because
being an artist is always about enjoying the moment!
If you host your own ADE night. Who
would be on the list to play with
you? It can be any artist dead or
alive.
I would love to have Jvna, Nostalgix, Haus of
Panda, Sihk, and Imanu to be on the lineup for sure!
You told us you will be moving to LA
soon. Does that mean we will see
you play more in the united states
then or will you be traveling with the
seasons aka where the sun is? Stay
a couple of months and then move
to the next continent?
Yes! I’m planning to spend more time in US for
2024!
Anything you want to share with
your fans out there?
Stay tuned for my new EP on mau5trap! :)
We are delighted to have a moment to interview and welcome an
international DJ, Producer, Promoter, popular Radio host with Mi-Soul, an
Event Organiser in his role as partner in renowned house night “Deep
Into Soul”, as well as founder of Raising Records & Raising People
Management…….With a CV like that, there is very little this man doesn’t
know about the house music industry. The one and only. SY SEZ.
Originally making his name in London in the mid-noughties as a resident DJ for the
legendary Soul Heaven & Ministry of Sound, Sy has gone onto play worldwide at
some of the most established clubs & festivals, at times lining up with some of the
biggest names in House music Spen, Terry Hunter, Louis Vega, John Morales, Dave
Lee to name just a smattering.
Sy has a burning passion for the music he plays & a charismatic energy & style when
he’s on the decks, this has led him to be one of the most sought over DJs in the deep
& soulful house music scene, regularly headlining major events, club nights and
festivals all over the country and beyond over recent years
He has also been gaining a massive reputation for his own productions recently,
most notably his release on Soul Heaven/Defected Records 'WITH YOU' feat.
Cleveland Jones, which had huge recognition and a Number 1 spot on Traxsource.
In his early production years Sy formed the AphroDisiax brand and has more recent
projects such as MindState, Truu Colours & Says Who? Who have all achieved
industry wide recognition.
Collectively, Sy has also released music on a catalogue of labels worldwide including
Defected, Nervous, Ministry Of Sound, MN2S, Soul Heaven, Quantize, Rhemi, BBE, R2,
TRIBE, Mousse T’s Peppermint Jam ++ more
This journey, through the highways and byways of the international releases, as
well as working A&R for Soul Heaven (now part of Defected) led Sy to launch his own
label in 2021 Raising Records.
Impressively, in their first year, they made their mark with some stunning releases
including legendary House vocalists such as Robert Owens & Michelle Weeks. Also
numerous number ones on Traxsource, UK & SA radio plays on Kiss FM, BBC Radio &
YFM and support from legendary DJ’s such as Louie Vega.
Raising Records are a brand that prides themselves on the positive messages in
their music, (as is the agency that Sy founded “Raising People”) & are definitely a
label to watch for the future…
SYSEZ

Great to see you again. Thank you for
taking the time out to do this, I know
just how much you have on and that I
am catching you between gigs, studio
sessions and Xmas shopping!!
No worries, that’s my pleasure to speak with you
Terry and thanks for the opportunity.
You wear many hats in the music
industry—DJ, Producer, Promoter,
Radio host, Event Organizer, Agency
Manager and founder of multiple
brands. First question. How the f#ck
do you manage to balance ALL THIS!!
as well as dealing with your own
family life, not to mention day to day
life and what is it that drives your
passion for each of these projects
and to be so committed to so many
people? It makes me dizzy just
watching you!
it’s all about time management and being as
economical with your time and energy as possible. That’s the
only way it works for me. Also, my whole work life is heavily
time-lined and documented; so I know exactly what I’m
doing and when I’m doing it.
My main drive for this is to be successful in all I do
whether that’s a label, DJ or producer and to be self-sufficient
and not ever have to work for anyone. I’m very blessed and
grateful to make a a living from what I love and am
passionate about in life. That’s a big driving factor for me too.
Any particular milestones that you're
especially proud of?
Starting my own label was a big milestone for me,
because I’ve worked for some big labels over the years,
including Defected, Soul Heaven. I learnt a lot here so it was
great to take all that knowledge and experience and trust my
own ears with my own label and movement - raising records.
What do you feel are the biggest
challenges have you faced in the
music industry, how have they
shaped your approach to your roles?
My biggest challenges have by far, been politics and
many people working against me and throwing obstacles in
my way. Especially the higher up you go. Although this may
seem negative, I’m very grateful for these experiences as it’s
really fuelled me and driven me forward in all I do. These
things are NOT talked about enough in the industry.
Soulful house music is the significant
focus of your career. What drew you
to this genre, and how do you see it
evolving in the ever-changing
landscape of house music?
What really drew me to this sound when I was
young, was the us sound of house, which was more soulful &
where the real term “garage “ comes from. Seeing DJs like
Paul “Trouble” Anderson playing the sound that we (as
teenagers) had never really heard before, because the house
in the early 90s was no way is soulful or as musical as it is
now in places.
But those early 90s DJs like Paul put us all onto it. I
was slightly too young and missed out on his legendary loft
parties, but we more frequented in places like garage city or
the second room of satellite club at coliseum.
Re the how I see the landscape; I’m trying to stay to
my true roots which is just good old-fashioned “House Music“
I feel like this is what the scene will go back to especially with
more of the younger generation coming through, it won’t be
so fragmented and broken up into little sub genres and
sounds / scenes . It’s all “house” at the end of the day…
Tell me more about the inception of
"Deep Into Soul." How did you get
involved in this renowned house
night, and how has it evolved over
the years?
Deep into Soul is over 10 years old I’ve been playing
for them since their inception, and now years later took over
the brand from the original founder Scott (must big him up
because he was the one who started it, founded it built it
from the beginning) Then my now partner, Neil Pierce, came
into deep into soul a few years after Scott had launched it
and how to build it to what it is now. One of the most
renowned nights worldwide for it sound and constantly
booking international, guess as well as home-grown talent
and local heroes.
I had a great opportunity around the end of
lockdown when I took over the brand from Scott -as he
decided to step out and focus on family stuff. I’ve partnered
with neil and we are now three years in and it’s been going
great. Carrying on the great legacy an institution that D.I.S
truly is!
We’ve hosted festival stages at the Southport
weekender with Louie Vega and David Morales. We’ve hosted
both parties in Croatia with the Suncebeat festival with the
likes of The Journey Men & Chicago’s DJ Emmaculate. We’ve
also hosted many parties throughout the UK & clubs including
The Cause, 93 Feet East, Orange Yard, Studio 9294 & POW
Brixton.
2024 is said to be a massive year for us, and we
have some amazing things in the pipeline in various different
countries. So keep your eyes and ears tuned into what we
are doing!
What would you say the ethos is
behind the DIS Parties?
Our ethos is a friendly family vibe. One of those
parties where you could even turn up on your own and find
friends and feel safe and sound. DIS is seen as a community,
a coming together of like-minded people where newcomers
are as welcomed in as our devout regulars!!
42 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

We also pride ourselves in bringing the finest deep
and soulful house music to the people in the form of some of
the most renowned DJs throughout the world, as well as
some of our local heroes and home-grown talent.
We also have very strong residents in myself and
Neil who come with many years of experience, not just
supporting guests, but also playing the warmup sets as well
as peak-time sets. Regardless who is behind the decks, we
strive to always bring high quality, music and artists to give
the people for the best experience we can.
Another massive part of our ethos is showcasing
Some of the next generation who are coming through, young
DJs who we are trying to pave the way for. There’s never
been a better time for younger people to be into our music
and we are really trying to harness this for the longevity of
our brand and more importantly the sound we represent!
You absolutely love that, don’t you?
The bringing of people together part
of it, the community spirit of it all. What
is it that does it for you?
Yes, that’s what life is about for me to bring people
together. As a community…It’s just something that I do. It’s
something that was done by my mentor’s people like, Phil
Asher and Paul trouble Anderson (RIP).
These people in my life were all about plugging
everyone in together and creating a community and vibration
and sound. To be honest, it’s not that it “does “anything for
me I just do it because it’s a natural part of my character.
Really though it’s actually the people that are the
ones that create the community and bring everyone together.
Not me / us. We just put the music on and play!
I’ve seen you have recently joined
forces with Jeremy Silvester. How did
that come about?
Yes so me and Jeremy Sylvester and our other
partner Lord Byron decided to come together to create this
event and record label called UNIFI. Jeremy is a Garage/
Jungle legend with a historic catalogue of dance music under
lots of aliases inc. Club Asylum.
Lord Byron is a broken beat don from Birmingham
who I shared a resident, with at Vortex in Croatia. An
incredible technical DJ with a unique sound. And I am known
in the house/soulful house world with what I do etc. So we
tried to bring all our sounds and strengths together with
“UNIFI” …we represent all the sounds of house, garage,
broken beat & Afro.
Our ethos is to combine all these sounds / genres at
our club nights on one dance floor…and thru the releases that
we are having on our record label. To be honest it’s been
something that’s been going so great and different to what
I’m normally involved in.
We host bi-monthly parties at one of Birmingham
coolest venues ARTUM. We have some really dope guests
from the local Birmingham community. It’s a real melting pot
of all the different sounds n Vibes. We also have a lot of
dancers & crews that attend, so the dynamic of our event on
the Dancefloor is quite unique! Yo, If you’re ever in the
Midlands area, watch out for us and come through to party!
Also, keep an eye out on some of our releases on
our record label UNIFI SOUNDS, which are already making
some good noise out there!
What do you feel have been the
biggest changes in the industry
during that time? What have been the
positives/negatives?
In regards to the music recording and record label
industry that side of things I would say the massive changes
in the way music is consumed and purchased. Especially with
the presence and domination of these streaming platforms.
It’s really change the landscape for a lot of us artists and
labels.
How do you feel about the health/
positive and negatives of the deep &
soulful house scene at the moment.
And how do you see it progressing in
the next 5-10 years? And how do you
see your role in that scene?
I feel like on the positive side there’s so many young
people getting into it now, especially in my country. There’s
so many youngsters being proactive as DJs and producers.
It’s great to see and hear. For this sound in
particular to progress in the global house scene and always
be relevant and cool, It’s all about the youngsters coming up
front and centre with their music, not to fully takeover but to
bring it through as well to their generation. To join the
community & be empowered. If not, in my opinion it just
goes stale.
For me it is the beauty and the true root and
foundation of house music, like when you used to be in a real
house rave back in the day in the early 90s, for example, the
early years, it was just house music that was playing…or
sometimes techno. Everybody was in there, all ages, from
really young up to really old. All colours all, all religions,
cultures, every walk of life! That’s HOUSE!!
And it’s one of my real aims and goals is to try to
bring that essence back in everything I do -whether that be
my events or my record labels…& my productions too.
What was one of your favourite ever
gigs, and why?.
Vortex Croatia - I was a rolling resident here for
about 4 summers. For me this is where I could be the truest
form of myself as a DJ ever!! I was playing extended sets 3
to 4 hours and being able to play all over the board. Just like
I was explaining above. It was just house. Whether that be
deep, soulful, Afro, Latin, whatever. I could really just be free
and be me. Also the vortex venue is situated on a stunning
beach location on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. The party
ran from 6 am in the morning till 12 in the afternoon! It was
always busy 200-400 with people from all over the world. It
was spiritual and hedonistic in there the connection between
music and people I’d have never seen before. Also the
connection between the music, the people and the nature
around us, especially the sea, sun, wine and ever rain!! It
was something different. Google it type ‘Sy Sez at Vortex ‘!!

Also, I held another summer residency in the
Dominican Republic, where I played with DJs like Kenny Dope,
The Martinez Brothers Osunlade, Sam Divine. It was
absolutely amazing being here every summer representing my
sound with these heavyweights!
What has been the best concert/
event you have ever been to. Outside
of your own events and ones you’ve
played at?
The best concert has to be either Jill Scott or Damian
Marley. Totally not house lol …but apart from that one of the
best events I’ve attended has been some of the defected
festivals that I’ve played at! The way they are run is really
inspiring both as a DJ and a promoter.
Jill Scott. That is still one of my dream
gigs. Ok, back to house, who’s been
your favourite DJ you have ever
booked or played on the same bill as?
That’s a real tough question, being on the bill with
someone and actually playing with someone is two different
things to me. So I will have to go with Osunlade. He’s a
legendary Artist/Producer…..An incredible DJ.
I’ve had the honour and pleasure of playing back to
back with him on numerous occasions at my own events in
London, at ADE / Soul Heaven in Amsterdam, and also at
Vortex in Croatia.
As a successful figure in the industry,
what advice do you have for aspiring
DJs, producers, and event organizers
who are looking to make their mark in
the world of music these days?
Be original stick to your vision no matter what,
never give up and always believe 100% in what you’re
doing.
Keep the faith! But also prepare yourself for a lot of
doors closing in your face for a lot of people saying no, and a
lot of knock backs and rejection. If you can overcome this
you’ll be a lot stronger on your journey.
Never turn good opportunities down even if you’re
scared just go for it.
You have to really believe in yourself and what you’re
doing -not in a cocky way, but in a real, genuine passionate
way.
Keep it real & play fair!!
Beyond the music, you've been
involved in various aspects of
community-building. How do you see
your work contributing to the broader
music community, and what role do
you believe music plays in society?
Yes I have done a lot of work with youth projects
based around music workshops. Whether that be music
production or predominantly DJ workshops even some singing
workshops. It is one of the most powerful ways to engage
with young people in the community.
Also being creative and musical in any capacity can
be a massive beneficiary for mental health issues, especially
with young people. I’ve worked with a lot of youth clubs &
young peoples projects in under privileged communities &
have really seen the positive impact it can have.
Obviously you have made some
tracks with some of house music
biggest artists (*Robert Owens,
Michelle Weeks) but I know you have
doing a lot working with up and
coming artists recently….and booking
young unknown DJs. What’s the
thought process behind that?
Just like what I was saying above, I’m all about
empowering the next generation and bringing them through.
If you don’t, then what are we leaving behind as elders when
we retire or pass away, we wanna create a legacy and help
the next generation of youths coming through.
Also in this community and industry as up n comings
we don’t always have opportunities given to us. Thankfully, I
was given a few important opportunities when I was up and
coming back in the day, so I know how important it is.
So did that lead you into creating the
“Raising People Management” agency
then?
So with “raising” I’m creating a label, an agency and
then an event. The agency has taken off and we are dealing
with management and bookings for a select few producers &
DJs. Our vision is to represent them in both the management
and booking capacity.
Who are you most exciting stars on
the agency for you, how did you find
them and what made you sign them?
Why are they unique?
So one of our superstars is a young female DJ called
LEV who I played over here in Spain with. She is just going to
do such massive things out here. I met her when she was only
about 19 or 20 I was blown away, by her as a DJ, especially in
her knowledge and selections of music and records. Since we
first met, she’s gone on to play at some of the biggest clubs
names and brands in house music, including Glitterbox, Fabric
and hand-picked by Kerri Chandler himself for his event in
London. Hi, Riz, she is in high demand all over the place.
It can be quite overwhelming for a young artist, so
we have partnered up with her on the agency to look after all
her bookings and management. We have absolutely incredible
schedule of gigs lined up for her this year. Keep an eye out for
this young girl because she is a serious talent!
We also look after a producer called Kolabeech. He
was signed to Warner music and also to Defected. We handle
all his management and this year. He has some incredible
releases lined up on some major labels -which we can’t name
right yet -but just keep an eye on him. It’s completely
different to the world I’m known to come from, it’s more in
the commercial side of dance music. It’s great because it adds
so much diversity and variety to what we do on the agency &
with “Raising Records”.
Steve Mac is one of the most respected UK producers
in the game. He has over 1000 releases under his belt
including original productions, producing other artists
and remixing the likes of Jamiroquai, Amy Winehouse
and Michael Jackson to name but a few. Also scoring
pop chart success. The former Rhythm Masters man
has built up an enviable selection of analogue
hardware in his recording studio, The Bunker, and the
clarity of sound emanating out of his studio mix-downs
is the backbone to the success of the Jack Said What
sound. Steve has toured with the likes of Pete Tong,
Nic Fanciulli and Layo & Bushwacka, held down DJ
residencies in Ibiza, and in early 2023 released his
long-awaited artist album ‘Bless This Acid House’,
which featured collaborations with the likes of Marshall
Jefferson and Robert Owens. His latest project is
producing & Writing the score with Irvine Welsh for
" You need to work double hard to get
anywhere now. So much harder to break
through. If you do it part time, you have no
chance "

Tell us about Steve, the person.
I am a music fanatic, synthesiser addict. Basically
I have dedicated my life to music. I don’t have any
children. I have 2 cat’s, a dog and I got married last year. I
am a very sociable person. Love going out and traveling.
DJ on Vinyl, CD’s Or Digital Or A Mix,
Why?
I started out as a scratch mix DJ so I know my
way around a turntable pretty well but these day’s I use
CDJ and record box . It really does make life simple .
Of your over 100 releases name
your top 5 personal favourite. And
why?
Most of my own records do my head in as I have
heard them so many times, you have to listen to them
constantly while you are making them. I was really happy
with how my album ‘Bless this acid house ‘ turned out. I
collaborated with some amazing artists on this album. I
think I can still listen to this. Haha!
How did you start in the scene and
as a DJ too?
I started doing when I was 11 years old, messing
around with turntables and tape decks, doing pause mixes
etc. I started out with electro then got into hip hop then
house & techno. I just happened. As a kid its all I was into,
Music full stop. I think I was lucky to be born at the right
time as I was a teenager when the whole scene started.
You have done some exclusive
remixes, whats your favorite and
why?
Jamiroquai, '7 days'. I did 2 mixes, one full vocal
and one full on acid dub. Jay Kay loved both of them, the
first remixes he ever liked. He didnt even like space
cowboy Morales mix. I gave it to Pete Tong and he made it
essential new tune. The A&R guy looking after the record
called me when he heard it on the radio and went mental
as he hadn’t approved it with me but told me he was so
over the moon. Jay liked it so let me off giving it to Tong.
This happened a few times with certain records. Opp’s!
I think my other favourite was my biggest the
Todd Terry 'Jumping' remix which actually went to number
7 in the UK charts which was amazing at the time for an
instrumental dub record. That mix was a game changer.
a record label together. I cant explain in words the amount
of laughs and good times we have had. He taught me so
much working in an artistic environment on how to have
fun.
As a DJ and fan, Festival - Super Club
- Small club or House party?
I love them all, all different vibes. Only thing I
can't stand is shit sound systems that hurt your ears. That
will send me home.
What do you do other than music,
hobbies, activities, a day in the
life……..?
Not much really, like I said earlier, I have
dedicated my life to music. Things outside of music are
pretty non existant, maybe the odd football game, walk the
dog, spending time with friends, going out to dinners.
What are some of the main go-to
equipment you have in your studio
and why?
I have a ton of gear. I use mostly analog synths,
compressors effects etc. I use it all everyday!
Software favorites and why?
I am a logic user. I use this DAW as I have been
using it for over 20 years. They all do the same job but its
what you get use to. It's the main software I use.
Tell us about your labels.
My label is called 'Jack Said What' . It’s only 18
months old. It’s run by myself, Carl Loben and Irvine
Welsh. Also our team has now built; We have Toni
Tamborine doing PR, Jon Carter (Yes the DJ) looking after
our events and Rob Miller looking after the business side.
The dream team!
Future releases?
Bless this acid house part 2, Just finished the
album. Had to follow this up!
You have worked with a lot of
people, who has been the easiest
and best to work with and why?
I am lucky to have worked with some amazing
artists but out of all of them it has to be Irvine Welsh .
Irvine has become one of my best friends and we now run
It was the first time I stopped making music in my
whole career. My mother was dying from cancer all the way
through Covid so I dedicated my time to her. She passed
away in April 21.
Advice for new DJ’s and producers.
You need to work double hard to get
anywhere now. So much harder to break through. If
you do it part time, you have no chance. If you have a
passion for it, go for it but give it your absolute all.
Any last words?
I think that pretty much covers it. Thanks for
having me.

Plymouth’s very own events brand, record label
and podcast series Melodic Beats has made the world
take note. Booking the likes of Jody Wisternoff and
curating mixes from a wide range of acts including
Graham Gold and more, and releasing many releases
which are amassing strong DJ support. Melodic beats
recordings is "Quality underground house music with a
hypnotic groove and an atmospheric edge". Deep,
Melodic dance music, Emotional & Progressive
electronic music and everything in-between. It's the
off-shoot of the success of the Podcast. They have a
combined 80 plus years of experience in the whole
50 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

Tell us a bit about your background
musically.
Firstly, I have to thank you for this opportunity, as
an independent label this is a real honour, so many thanks.
So, my background in this music game…. I suppose it all
started when I first went to Zenas back in 1989. I was
completely blown away. Simon Debruin and MC/DJ Ribbz
playing music I had never heard before, and a club full of
people absolutely loving everything about it. That was it, I
was hooked. From there I was lucky enough to be involved
in the rise of that culture and loved every second I was
exposed to it. But just being there wasn’t enough, I wanted
to be playing the records. So, like a few at that time, I got
myself some belt drives and the apprenticeship began! We
would go to the parties, go back to flats and afterparties
and start playing records. I was also lucky enough to have
Plymouth’s DJ XL bring his 1210’s back to ours at the time,
where he taught me the basics. From there I improved by
spending time playing the records.
I got my first few gigs and it grew over the years.
I DJ’d, promoted various nights and got involved with
labels which gave me the knowledge and experience to
keep doing what I absolutely loved. I was a resident at the
Warehouse and the Academy in Plymouth, played and
worked for Children of Kaos and was fortunate to play
around the country. Every minute was phenomenal.
Organising the musical content for Run to the Sun was
another privilege. After this I took a break for family and
career but finished on a high. DJ’ing with Timo Maas at Run
to the Sun in front of a packed arena was a memory I will
always remember.
As the kids grew up, my itch returned which is
when I formed Melodic Beats. First came the podcast and
getting mixes out across the globe. Shortly after came the
label and the events followed which is where we are today..
Still absolutely loving it….and looking forward to more!
Where did you first start going out
and then playing out?
My first experience of the scene as it was at
Zenas, with the S.A.S playing every Saturday night.
This grew into the first Raves in the Warehouse and
beyond. It was very special. It was probably a couple of
years from getting involved as a clubber to actually
playing. I have a lot of thanks to a club legend, Andy
Howard, who gave me my first breaks in Plymouth. My first
main paid gig was for a rave in The Warehouse, Plymouth.
I was nervous as hell but it was amazing. Hundreds of
people loving the vibe was amazing.
You had a stint programming the
music for Run To The Sun in
Newquay, what were the highlights
with that?
That was a fantastic few years being involved with
Run. It was 2001, 2002 and 2003 when I was working for
Kaos Design and we took on the full production for the
event and I was able to sort the music side of things. A real
honour and so much fun. Every year was superb to be
honest. I was booking Nick Warren, K Klass, Shades of
Rhythm, Azzido da Bass, Timo Maas, Jelly Jazz, Goldie and
many more. Being able to programme each weekend to
ensure we had variety over the weekend, whilst booking
the best at their game was fantastic. Loads of hard work
but loads of reward being able to see the success each
year.
Every weekend was special but the absolute
highlight was a classics night we did in 2003. Dj’ing
alongside Shades of Rhythm and K Klass, playing music
where it all began for me was a special night, knowing
everyone had a blinder as well just capped it off for me.
You used to mix on the radio quite a
bit in your early years, what inspired
you to set up the podcast?
We were lucky enough to have some radio mixes
back in the day which I will always be thankful for, but it’s
a very different landscape now, so much choice which is
phenomenal. The podcast was set up for me to initially put
out mixes I was loving again. However, I very quickly
realised there were so many talented DJ’s out there playing
the type of music I was totally into. So I used the podcast
as a platform for all, which it still is today.
What about the label, How did that
come about?
The label came about from the podcast and the
traction the podcast had created. Tim French had got into
production and had a track which just seemed perfect and
right. Louk Pour-Hashemi, put me in contact with Simon
McCann and Matt Edwards where I was able to form
Melodic Beats Recordings. Again, it just grew. My ethos was
for it to be a platform for musicians producing the music
Melodic Beats was all about. It’s never been about social
status or followers, it’s always about the actual music.
If you had to decide your ultimate
lineup for a night (past and present)
who would it be?
Ultimate line up is always a tricky thing really. For
me now, it would have to be Fankey Wah, Nick Warren, Lee
Burridge, Tim Green and Sebastien Leger….overlooking the
sea on a sunny day through to the night!
52 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

You’ve thrown some huge events,
what are your plans for the next few
years event wise and any names
you want to book?
The events seemed to flow from the traction of the
whole Melodic Beats vibe really and to want to give my
home town something a bit different from other events.
Fundamentally it’s about the style of music played at a
gorgeous location attended by some absolutely lovely
people, which we have been lucky enough to achieve of the
last few years. For me, doing events is about the right
ingredients at the right place at the right time and the
names listed above would be a delight to bring to the
southwest.
What are your plans for the label in
the future, any artists you would like
to have on there?
Obviously I would love the label to keep growing,
keep getting recognition which in turn benefits the artists
who release on the label. I am an independent label with
no major backing, but I like that. I will keep doing the best
I can for the artists that release on MB. I never really think
about it being about big names for the label, it’s always
just about the music which goes out, and ensuring its right
and above all top draw. The fact that MB’s releases have
been supported and played by the likes of Nick Warren,
Hernan Cattaneo, Anthony Pappa to name a few is
testament that we are going in the right direction. I have
been lucky to have artists, established and new, wanting to
release with me and most of all it’s come from the genres
which I love. It is about creating a space for organic,
melodic, progressive and breakbeat music by artists who
produce outstanding music in whatever style. Music I love
and am honoured to be able to put out.
You've worked on some
productions in the studio again
recently, after not releasing since
the 90s, any plans to revisit this?
I have dabbled in the production side of things
over the years. I don’t have my own set up so it’s always
been with other sound engineers where I have created
work. I never say never about anything…. but this has been
one thing I have had to stop pursuing due to the lack of
time, which I just haven’t had over the last few years.
However, I’ll never say never….
Working on all the above whilst
having a pretty hectic day job must
be tough, What do you do to relax?
Not enough !!!!!! I have an intense day job for
sure, and that’s the one that pays the bills. The music is a
passion and I’ve been lucky enough to build something
which I love and is respected throughout. I want to
continue to push music from producers and DJ’s to help
them build profiles and exposure, that puts a smile on my
face. Getting their music played by some of the globes
biggest names in their genre is a very cool thing. One thing
I did have to do last year was to re balance a few things. I
cut the podcast to once a month and I’ll only release a
maximum of one release per month on the label. This
ensures the artists and DJ’s are not just washed over onto
the next. With those amendments to the schedules, I was
able to give myself a little more time to utilise our van,
which I love going away in with the family. Pitching up
somewhere stunning is all that’s needed!!!! For me
anywhere near a river, lake or the sea is perfection…

Making Music On A Budget Part 1
Hi all! When lockdown hit in 2020, many had to stay in and
couldn't work. Thankfully due to the nature of my work, I
could work from home, but this is also where my studio was
which had been put into use producing solo music, or
engineering & co-writing/producing with friends. For some
periods where lockdowns happened, everything changed,
and for all of us who had to stay in and also those who were
furloughed and couldn't work, I put a list of resources online
for many free VSTs, software, guides and music tools, for
those who had free time, were wanting to learn music
production and didn't have very much money.
I thought about re-writing and updating the list with updates,
however it made more sense to turn it into a guide over a
few parts for those completely new to music production, or
those who have already started but are still learning. I aim to
cover everything from setting up an environment, and a
good solid workflow and organisation on your computer,
right the way through to sending tracks to as demos,
promotion, monetising your music and more over the next
few issues.
54 ZONE-MAGAZINE.EU

Your Environment
Setting Up Your Production Computer
This is something which I strongly neglected in my
early days of producing and releasing music, and hugely
regret as it hindered me greatly. Your first port of call should
be getting a comfortable desk and chair. I strongly
recommend this as I have made many tracks on laptops and
could only have short sessions before experiencing some
discomfort. I also strongly recommend to purchase an
external monitor, and although not necessary, if you can
dedicate the budget to it, buy a reasonable graphics card, and
two monitors.
Although this may seem like common sense, make
sure the monitors are both same make and model, as that
way you reduce the risk of driver compatability issues and
also can set up your work flow aesthetically to be split over
two screens. A wireless keyboard and mouse would also be
advantageous. I use and really enjoy the Cherry DW8000 -
(https://www.cherry.co.uk/dw-8000), and a mouse mat.
From experience, my choice is purchasing/
refurbishing a desktop computer solely for production. For the
PC especially, you can purchase a reasonably high spec
computer for very little compared to a laptop or the same
spec on other platforms, and you can dedicate it entirely to
production without other applications interfering with the
running. I have found that this increases productivity and
focus and reduces distractions, again which I neglected when
I started out by using a laptop.
The advice I give in this article is mostly for those
who use a PC, however, I will try to link to as many crossplatform
resources that have Apple Mac and Linux downloads
as possible.
For your computer, I suggest at least 16GB of RAM, a
dual core processor, and if you can justify it, a Solid State
Hard Drive, with at least 256 GB of space. You can easily pick
up these parts new, or second hand. A trusted website I have
purchased laptops, computer parts and hard drives from is
https://www.box.co.uk in Birmingham.
Finally, to start with, although you can make music
without both, an audio interface and a decent set of monitor
speakers and stands will help you massively. In my studio I
use the Solid State Logic SSL2+ (https://www.thomann.de/
gb/ssl_2_481703.htm) and Alesis M1 Active MK2s (https://
www.alesis.com/products/view/m1active-mkii) and the Gorilla
stands. A suitable budget interface is the Lexicon Alpha. I
used this for many years. A pair of headphones are also a
welcome addition, and I really like the BeyerDynamic
DT-990s. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/beyerdynamic-990-
PRO-Studio-Headphones/dp/B0011UB9CQ)
Ideally, by now you will have a dedicated computer
solely for music production, a table, wireless mouse and
keyboard, speakers, chair and table placed correctly. On your
computer, you can download or purchase an operating system
to run. I use Windows 11.
I will delve more into software and plugins in the
next issue, however one vital step is organising your files:
like so:
Music Creation --
I would recommend having folders and subfolders
-- Finished Arrangements -- Presets & Soundbanks -- Project
Files -- Masters -- Midi Files -- Sample Packs -- Favourites --
My Own -- Others -- Software -- VST Plugins -- Installs -- 32
Bit -- 64 Bit
The above will help you find files easily and most
importantly quickly. It helps for you to when you finish a
project/song, to back up the arrangement and stems to it's
own directory. You will also have subfolders for Presets and
Soundbanks, your in construction project files, returned
masters of your songs, MIDI files to help to learn from, and all
your samples sorted.
There is a directory there for Software, this is where
I would install your DAW and audio editing tools. When
installing VST installs, you can have a separate folder for each
one depending on what bit rate it is. I still use some 32 Bit
tools that were never released in 64 Bit, but are fantastic and
have become a strong part of my workflow thanks to a very
useful tool called jBridge I will talk about next issue.
That's all for this issue, but in the mean time before
Part 2, I recommend buying a copy of the latest issue of
Computer Music Magazine. At the time of writing, for the cost
of £7.20, you can buy an issue in the UK with free delivery
https://www.magazinesdirect.com/ - any issue will do, as
there are a wealth of very useful free plug-ins, samples and
more.
In the next issue we will select a DAW (or
two!), set up ASIO, install a few other plugins and look
at other items we can add to our studio and backing up
your data!
For how to place your speakers, this resource by
PreSonus is an absolute goldmine (https://
legacy.presonus.com/learn/technical-articles/studio-monitorplacement).
In a future issue I will talk about the problems
that can occur with your room and ways to address them.
Software Hardware and Tech
Albums - Dance
// LOUK
Hello all. My name is Louk and I am a DJ / Producer from England. I have produced / written /co-produced / co-written /
engineered / remixed and ghost produced over 300 productions that have been released since 2003 of varying genres. After a four
year hiatus since my last reviews and articles in Zone as my youngest was born, and I scaled back lots of musical activity, I have
decided to return to the world of Journalism, covering all things music Software, hardware and tech (as well as giving advice). This
month I cover two VST instruments, a hardware synth and a sample pack!
9
9
8
8
Renoise Redux (£59.90) - https://www.renoise.com/shop
I apologise greatly to the creators of Renoise Redux. They very kindly sent a version of Renoise Redux over to me in
2019 to write about, and this was sadly just before I stopped article writing when my youngest daughter was born.
However, here we are now kicking off the year, with a return to reviewing tech software and hardware, and I
promised that the first product I would review would be this. It's no secret I am a huge fan of their Renoise
Sequencer, and have been diligently using it since 2006, often using it to test out VSTs, come up with sketches and to
load old .MOD and other formats from my tracker days. It also links up very well with Cubase and other DAWs and is
a key feature in my production arsenal. With Renoise Redux, they have ported the sampler functionality in Renoise as
a standalone piece of software, and a VST, and it doesn't half deliver results. I use multiple instances daily in
productions, and have used it in various commercial productions, remixes, co-productions, engineered works and
ghost productions, and it has managed to improve my work flow considerably. Featuring exceptionally quick and easy
sample loading, key zone mapping and a multitude of options for sample processing, including excellent timestretching
(beat syncing) and pitch-shifting, Redux also offers a wealth of file formats. This is definitely the sampler
you need for ease of use and functionality.
Exonic MegaHertz (£99) - https://www.exonicuk.com/product-page/megahertz-1
This was a welcome discovery. After recently reading an interview on Reddit with tech trance supremo Marco V,
where he was talking about his studio setup, he was asked about the VSTs used in his studio. On his favourite
synths, he mentioned Exonic's Megahertz and I looked it up and was instantly impressed by the demo, and the
beautiful looking GUI. It's to be expected really, when the author Guy Rotem is the ex product manager and lead
instrument developer at Waves Audio, spending a number years there, with a number of Waves plugins featuring in
my studio over the past twenty years. After spending less than a minute delving away loading sounds and tweaking
dials, the phenomenal sound quality on MegaHertz really surprised, and with the added bonus of not compromising
CPU usage. With a remarkable selection of example presets, pristine VCFs, routable wires for modulation, 2
oscillators, a VCA, Step and Note Sequencers, LFOs and razor sharp but crystal clear effects, you know you are onto a
winner with this one and the initial presets on offer lend themselves well to techno, trance, progressive, breakbeat
and Drum 'n' bass, and I've already managed to use them in tracks that have come straight from the lab. There is
also the capability to really make and mould your own sounds completely from scratch, with the modulation capability
helping to twist the results into something unexpected. If you are looking for a software synth that gives its'
hardware counterparts like the Access Virus, and the Novation Peak a run for their money, look no further than
MegaHertz.
Behringer JT-4000 Micro Synth (£49) - https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=0722-ABR
Depending on where you purchase this synth, you can pick it up for under £50 including postage, and fair play to
Behringer for making extremely affordable hardware synths for those on a budget. Looking like a minature, 16-key,
Roland JP-8000, the JT-4000 is a micro, 4-voice hybrid synth that has 2 analog modelling oscillators per voice, a very
impressive feature given the fact that the synth is also programmable and at such a rock bottom price. You would
think that the audio engine would be similar to that of an old Casio toy synth from the 80s, however this couldn't be
further from the truth, and the JT-4000 is definitely usable. The JT-4000 boasts that it replicates the Roland JP-8K
sound engine, for under £50, so how does it compare? Unlike some of the other hardware and software/virtual
instrument clones on the market, as well as the Supersaw being featured, there are five other waveforms to choose
from. This is highly advantageous, meaning that you can create some really rich and warm sounds rather quickly.
The 32 presets on offer are varied as well and lend themselves to many genres. Although programming the synth is
not as instantaneous as some competition, and to get some results involves some serious dialing and menu digging,
the results are definitely worth the effort. There are videos on Youtube of other owners getting the synth working
with MIDI, however I have not personally tried this yet but aim to soon. For £50 you can't really go wrong with this
one.
Hard Trance Europe VoL 2 (£5.95 - £34.95) - https://www.loopmasters.com/genres/41-Trance/products/15870-
Hard-Trance-Europe-Vol-2
Rounding up the tech reviews this month is a sample pack from Hard Trance Europe (in collaboration with
Loopmasters). Just like the first edition, in pure Ronseal style, it's exactly what it says on the tin with Volume 2, as
the sounds are very much hard, very much trance orientated and on the whole very European. That's to be expected
really with the content creators, with production wizards Lab 4 and Hard Trance Europe owner, DJ/Producer and all
round legend Nick The Kid making up the pack, with both having decades of production experience behind them,
producing and remixing many timeless anthems. The label itself is going strong with over 250 releases covering the
whole spectrum of trance and harder sounds, and a string of high profile events featuring the creme de la creme of
the genre. With a rich sound quality throughout, and a just shy of 1 GB of Loops, one shots and MIDI files, covering
synths, basslines, drums and tons more, if you are new to production, or have many years of producing under your
belt, this is an essential pack for adding a little spice to anything trance orientated in your productions. Given the
sudden resurgence of trance influenced originals dominating the UK charts at the time of writing, and lots of current
techno bestsellers a borrowing lots of ideas from trance classics in the 90s, the pack lends itself well to a multitude of
genres. The sheer diversity of what is on offer here means you can get to grips with some awesome samples to really
add depth and layers to your music rather quickly.

Buried Tresure
Albums - Dance
// Jay Dobie [Progressive House Classics]
With progressive house now entering its 32nd year its safe to say there's a multitude of tracks out there just waiting to be
discovered. Unlike today many tracks were far less accessible back in the early 90's. We shared music via audio tape and generally
you'd have no tracklist, identifying a track name could at times turn into the hunt for the holy grail! These days things are much
easier and with Buried Treasure we hope to bring you some recommendations of obscure, rare and esoteric remixes and productions
that may have slipped under your prog radar. Happy Diggin!
Sven Vath – An Accident in Paradise (William Orbit & Spooky Mix) [EyeQ]
As featured on disc1 of the now legendary Northern Exposure 2 mix album, Orbit and
Spooky deliver a Guerilla style throbbing take on the techno, ambient album title track.
Sven Vath's first album was a personal, spiritual affair that captured the essence of a trip to
India which Vath described as an experience that shaped his artistic trajectory.
https://www.discogs.com/master/1416-Sasha-And-John-Digweed-Northern-Exposure-2
East 17 – Its Alright (Diss Cuss Dub Mix) [London]
Tucked away on the B-side of this god awful pop release is cracking remix from Hooj
Choons artist Jonathan Blanks (Andronicus) and Malcolm Duffy (Trade DJ) Diss-Cuss. Head
straight for the dub mix, a slice of 93 proggy/house magic featuring a gated repeat vocal
'Alright, alright'. Support all over the place for this. As at home on the floor of Renaissance
as it was at Trade.
https://www.discogs.com/master/85405-East-17-Its-Alright
IF – Everything and More (Leftfield Mixes) [MCA]
Sean McLusky is a name that's synonymous with the prog movement of the early nineties.
He's of course behind the legendary London club night Love Ranch and for Everything &
More pulled in prog pioneers Leftfield for a trio of remixes. The standout of here is the 'Dub
Ranch Mix'. Early prog vibes in a distinct Leftfield style. Random fact – McLusky was in the
band JoBoxers in the eighties who had a number 3 hit with Boxer Beat!
https://www.discogs.com/release/9404435-Leftfield-Mixes-2
Eric Clapton – I Get Lost [David Morales Mixes] [Reprise]
There was time when this was a little tricky to get hold of on vinyl but a quick look on
Discogs shows a few available if your prepared to pay an extortionate delivery cost! In the
vain of the classic Red Zone mix series Morales produces yet another slow burn proggy
outing. Featured on the Sasha & Digweed Communicate album this is all about the warm
up. Eric Kupper guests on keyboards.
https://www.discogs.com/master/85124-Eric-Clapton-I-Get-Lost
Alexander O'Neal – In The Middle (Sasha QAT Concept Mix) [A&M]
Early doors remix from Sasha with Tom Frederikse and Gaeton Schurrer on production and
programming duties. I recently interviewed Gaeton and he mentioned working on this
specific mix. A great example of the early Sasha sound as it was developing, probably my
favourite era for the 'Man Like'. To take an artist like Alexander O'Neal with the brief to
make him 'proggy' is pretty out there but between the three of them they nail it.
scene was in its infancy, and the music was cutting edge and raaaaw to the bone. If you’re serious about DJ’ing - especially if you prefer mixing on vinyl - then
here’s my first Top Six Count-Down of ESSENTIAL Oldskool vinyl You MUST have in your collection! I include many genres, such as early house, acid, trance, and
hardcore, to give you an exciting choice of vinyl goodness…In no particular order, let’s begin…
“Perfect Day” The Visions Of Shiva - 1992 - MFS
RecordsBefore me lies a copy of an early edition of MixMag, from October 1992. In the review section they say the
following: “Record of the month. Totally splendid trance from the dance to trance school of house, complete with a
Rolling Stones piano line. Again, very difficult to get hold of at the moment {editor’s note: it took me 5 years to get
my copy}. One of those records that makes you smile everytime you see it in your box.” I’m not sure I can surmise it
better. Literally one of the most perfect, golden early trance halcyon records ever, and one of Paul van Dyk’s first
releases. This track encapsulates what was so great about the early rave scene, designed to be electronic ecstasy. It
was one of the first tracks I heard at a rave, and it left an indelible mark on me ever since. It is simply unparalleled.
Pick it up cheaply on Discogs, and perhaps you’ll smile when you see it in your box…
“We R i.e” Lennie de Ice - 1991 - White Label
This f*&king track…For those of you who love breakbeat, jungle, and Drum & Bass, this is perhaps one of the most important records
to get in your collection. It didn’t know it at the time, but this absolute monster of a tune would pave the way for what was to come,
sounding unlike anything else before it. To put it simply, it has been long considered the original jungle track, released many years
before Jungle became an established genre in its own right. The producer, Lennie de Ice, claims it was written in the late 80s, before
finding itself on the B side of a very obscure and uninteresting ep. Whatever the truth, this track started the rounds in early 1991,
devastating dancefloors whenever it was dropped. The key to it’s dominance lies in its simplicity: a repeating bassline, a synth stab, a
vocal sample screaming “we are EEEE”, and one of the hardest, craziest Amen breakbeats money could buy at the time, splintering
subwoofers and eardrums across the length and breadth of the UK. Every credible Hardcore DJ had this in their box, and you should
too. It’s harder to pick up a copy these days, and on the expensive side, but well worth every penny.
“Insomniak (I come back)” DJPC - 1991 - BITE Records
Thunderous 909 kick? Yup. Crazy vocal sample? Yup. Borderline insane hoover stab? You bet. This was pretty
much the de-facto requirement for many rave tunes from the early 90s. But this absolute monster tune will remain
one of the standout hardcore tracks of that time, and for good reason. This is unashamedly hardcore, and hardcore
at its brutal best. Written and produced in Belgium, it's a frantic, busy tune that morphs between light and dark
synth riffs, monstrous hoover stabs, and nose-bleed 909 kicks. Its popularity with the breakbeat rave crowd was
interesting, as it kept strictly to a hard techno 4/4 rhythm throughout, never dropping in its intensity or ever
feeling the need to copy what went before. This should only ever be played loudly as possible, in a large
warehouse for maximum effect.
“Liberation 2” Liberation - 1993 - XYZ Records
What happens if you sample the beat from a HipHouse record, sample a piano line from a little-known electro record from
the 80s, and add the Reverand Jesse Jackson? One of the greatest piano house tunes of all time, that’s what. Sampling the
Reverand Jesse Jackson, it opens with a classic house 909 4 bar loop, with Jackson intoning that it “really is a revolution”.
The track builds nicely, with an uplifting synth riff, warming you up for one of the greatest piano drops in house music
history. But it doesn’t stop there. The genius behind this miracle tune lies in the use of another Jesse Jackson sample,
recorded during the 1984 American election. Liberation sampled, chopped and rearranged the speech, turning it into a
spectacular vocal hook, accompanying the melancholic, descending piano line, making it arguably one of the greatest
“hands in the air” piano tracks to have graced the dancefloor.
“Q” Mental Cube - Mental Cube EP - 1990 - Buzz Records
Mental Cube are Future Sound Of London. They are also responsible for some of the most brilliant, original and melodic dance music
to emerge from the very early 90s. Q is one of their standout tracks from this ep, a relentlessly mesmerising, beguiling, yet tuff-tothe-bone
techno track that decided to use beauty, rather than power, to sink into your brain. In the late 80s and early 90s, a new
techno sound emerged from northern England. It was known as Bass&Bleeps, and was noticeable for its sparse, stripped down use of
the 909 and hypnotic basslines and bleepy effects; music that was clearly meant to be played in large warehouses and spaces rather
than listened to. Q is born from this tradition, utilising high frequency beeps and bleeps, yet sets itself a million miles apart from its
competitors with its stunning use of haunting, orchestral chords. With no vocal hook, this is purest melodic techno - perhaps you
might say the start of melodic trance - that was engineered to pick you up at 3 am. And it was a tantalising glimpse of what was yet
to come from the Future Sound… Drop this at any stage, at any dance event, and watch the reaction of the crowd…
“BombScare” 2 Bad Mice - Hold it Down ep - 1991 - Moving Shadow Records
1991 was one hell of a year. Breakbeat Hardcore was emerging as the dominant sound of the UK underground, typified by faster
breakbeats, sub basses and frantic keyboard stabs. And one of the most beloved was ‘Bombscare’, a track on the flip side of the Hold
it Down ep. This one track would go on to pretty much encapsulate what was so fresh and daring about the early oldskool hardcore
scene, and rightly holds its place in the pantheon of all-time great tracks. It opens with record scratch samples, followed by exploding
bomb sounds, before kicking into an irrisitable breakbeat rhythm. The breakbeat and bomb sounds continue for a few intro bars,
before one of the most unforgettable descending organ riffs in oldskool history explodes in your ears. This sounds as fresh, raw and
unique today, some 32 years since its release, as it did then - testament to the ‘keep it simple, keep it deadly’ attitude that unerpined
so many of the early dance music anthems. And DJ Sasha included it in the very first Renaissance Mix CD; the ONLY hardcore record
to feature in one of the most legendary DJ mixes of all time! It’s cheap to buy, and absolutely belongs in your collection.

Lufthaus & Sophie Ellis Bextor - Immortal - (Because Of Art Remix) [Armada]
My pick of the month goes to this absolute gem, Because Of Art's Remix of Immortal. Immortal is
from the newly formed band Lauftaus. Comprising of none other than Robbie Willams, Tim Metcalfe
and Flynn Francis, Here they add the sultry vocals of Sophie Ellis Bextor and what an amazing mix
we have. London Based producer Because Of Art a.k.a Alex Grover takes on remix duties making
this an instant dancefoor hit. With Rolling Breakbeats, Melancholic Pads and the original Haunting
vocals entwine seamlessly to bring a brand new rendition, expertly relaying the emotion so deeply
embedded in the song. Amazing! This is also the only track ever to feature both the vocals of
Robbie Williams and Sophie Ellis Bextor.
Air Tapes – Wind Tunnel/Qwesh [W&O Street Tracks]
Irish producer Air Tapes dishes out an excellent pair of intricate club tracks for Street Tracks on the
‘Wind Tunnel / Qwesh’. With previous releases on Leisure System, ReGraded and R&S Records, he
now finds himself on Street Tracks. “Wind Tunnel” uses a relatively simple chord progression as the
backbone of the track, with filters slowly opening and closing to add movement. Melodic elements
are added and taken away to keep the track moving, but its that main riff that gives the track so
much character. “Qwesh” ups the tempo and brings in lo-fi influences with samples and elements
being used to skip things along, but it’s “Wind Tunnel” that is the star of the show here. Grab a copy
now.
Various Artists – Sampler 01: Floor To Floor 10 Years Of 17 Steps
Dusky celebrate a decade of their 17 Steps imprint with this precursor to their compilation album
dropping later in the year. Label bosses kick things of with “Proto Spoon”, a breakbeat and hardcoreinspired
club beast, with uplifting vocals and synth pads. It will without a doubt get things rolling.
Machine Dion brings things down but still aims firmly at the dancefloor with vocal chops being combined
with snarling sub-bass and more breakbeats. Kassian continues with the rave theme with sampled
breakbeats and vocal chops being combined with piercing bass on “157 FM”. Finally, Scaefa takes things
into 4/4 territory with the euro trance-inspired “Celestial”. A great selection, and a great teaser of the full
album.
RECOMMENDED
Long Island Sound – Flare [Oath]
9
The first single from their upcoming mini-album, Long Island Sound bring us “Flare”. A
combination of Four Tet inspired breakbeats and progressive sounds combined with soaring
vocals and synths. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact classification of this one, as it would
definitely fit into several different DJs sets, but would be equally at home as the soundtrack
to a late-night road trip. Great stuff, I cant wait for the album.
8
Mario Ochoa – The Dream EP [Tronic]
Colombian producer Mario Ochoa returns to Tronic with a 3 track EP showcasing his energy and skill in
the studio. The title track “The Dream” is a 303-influenced peak time number, led by a driving acid line
and rolling ride cymbals. “No Time” uses more dubby elements as the backbone, with a pulsating synth
line accompanied by pumping kicks and vocal chops. Finally, “Contraption” rounds things off with staccato
vocal samples acting as the percussive and melodic elements combined with rattling percussion and
pounding sub-bass. One for the late-night dancefloors. Great stuff.
Turtle – Acts of Union EP [Reflections]
One for the after-hours here, or the day after. 4 tracks of blissful ambient and electronica from
Glaswegian producer Turtle. Following on from working with renowned film-maker Fernando Villena on
Documentaries such as ‘Any One of Us’, ‘Dear Rider’ and ‘The Alpanist’, this new EP explores themes and
ideas derived from that work. Each track recorded in one take, it provides a beautiful soundscape for
relaxing and unwinding. And let’s face it, we all need that from time to time.
DYNAMO CITY – ONE NIGHT IN HACKNEY 23’ [STAY UP FOREVER VS HYDRAULIX]
Not more bloody remixes of that ’15 cans of Stella’ track you say!? Well yes, there are and this EP is rather
special. It says 2023 remixes, although this has only just come out and it comes out on a very sexy LTD edition
red record as part of a special collaboration between Stay Up Forever & Hydraulix. There isn’t anything I can say
about the original of this, it’s a timeless acid techno anthem from Chris and Henry that has been played time and
time again around the world for nearly two decades, so let’s crack on with the remixes… ‘Perc’ turns in an almighty
hard Industrial remix in his unique style, with emphasis on the ‘take this pill’ lyric. The breakdown is epic with lush
pads before searing lazer zaps lead us into the infamous ‘ONIH’ vocal. Proper banger this! Japanese ‘Ayako Mori’
ups the tempo with this rattling rework and chucks in some old school rave stabs which later turn into the same
notes as the acid on the original and this takes on a very clever but different journey. Love it! ‘Regal’s version is a
chunky affair with an infectious bass groove and crisp percussion before the classic vocal comes in and we are
treated to some very modern sounding acid and that relentless horn sound. Thumper! Last up is the legendary
‘Miss Djax’ who starts of all hard and jackin but with the pitch taken down on the lads vocals (making them sound
like they’ve had a heavy night on the cigars) the vocals repeat alongside the well-known evil acid stab until the
breakdown, where we are treated to a brand new old school acid line before we go all guns blazing with the 303
going full squelch and building up to the end. Great release and certainly one for the Vinyl collectors out there!
ALEXANDER KOWALSKI – MACHINES VORTEX [ARKHAM AUDIO]
Huge fan of Alexander Kowalski (and Arkham Audio) and this release is rather special! Alex’s original of ‘Machines Vortex’ is deep
and mesmeric groover with a right bleepy bassline. The ‘Pfirter’ remix is wicked, very similar in structure, but with lots of tension
and a heavier groove. The drop on this is Epic! ‘Binary Dreams’ is a lot deeper and rather more melodic for Alex, with a great deep
bassline. ‘Kr!z’ ups the tempo with his version, with loads of great movement on the hats and hits, with the synth going into a
bleepy overdrive, Brilliant! ‘Asylum’ is the deepest cut on the EP, lovely deep groove, nautical beeps and old school pads drive this
along. My favourite remix though is the one and only ‘Truncate’ who takes ‘Asylum’ and ups the wonkiness with mind bending
synth work, galloping beats and jacking percussion. Sheer class this remix from this legendary Los Angeles native. Massive!
ZERO DAYZ – SCARED BUSINESS
[RESILIENT RECORDINGS]
Eddie Santini’s brilliant Resilient recordings go big with their latest release, which also happens to be the
labels first venture into the Vinyl market (with a strictly LTD edition run of wax!) Zero Dayz (Eddie & Alex
Calver’s) original of ‘Scared Business’ is a rolling bass heavy monster in their now trademark style packed
full of modern acid lines and heavy breakbeats on the break. German legend ‘Joey Beltram’ emphasizes
the acid with his clever take on things, beautiful remix this! D.A.V.E. The Drummer up’s the tempo,
toughens up the beats and also goes in heavy on the acid for his banging remix which you know
everyone is going to love! Lastly ‘Gareth Wild’ gives us this ultra heavy breakbeat infused old school
sounding remix which is just brilliant! It’s really hard to pick a favourite here and I will no doubt be
playing all four versions! This is a must buy (but be quick if you want it on plastic!)
MARCO BAILEY & DAVID SCHWARZ – SELINA EP [MATERIA 077]
10
Italian legend Marco Bailey is back on his Materia label and he teams up with David Schwarz after the
success of the mighty ‘Dusty Collusion Ep’ from 2020. Two quality tracks are on offer, ‘Our Hood’ is my
pick, a crisp slice of driving techno funk with a luscious evolving bassline, tight percussion and mesmeric
synth bleeps. Title track ‘Selina’ is a clever hypnotic builder, lovely synth work and punchy drums take us
on a proper journey! Good work Gents!
STEEL GROOVES – FLIPSIDE [CHICAGO JAXXX 82]
All the way from Austin Texas, Rex Bruton has been a favourite of mine for many years and released some quality tunes
on Filth Infatuated back in the early days of the label. It’s great to see him back making Hardgroove bombs and that is
exactly what he supplies Josh Moseley’s awesome Chicago Jaxxx label with here! ‘Bloodsucker’ is hypnotic Hardgroove at
its finest, packed full of crisp tribal percussions, quirky fills and edits and an underlying groove which packs one hell of a
punch on the dance floor! ‘Flipside’ is a wicked marching number, full of intricate claps with tonnes of movement, some
cool zappy synth stabs and plenty of jack! Rounding off the EP is ‘Stop Staring’ which is totally different, full of funk and
some cool vocals on this crisp peak time roller! Quality EP this and a sign of things to come in 2024 for Chicago Jaxxx
and Steel Grooves!
SZMER – SEQUENCES EP [SYMBOLISM]
Polish artist Szmer returns to Ben Sims ace ‘Symbolism’ label with 4 top tracks all heavily leaning towards sci fi
techno soundscapes. Had the honour of following on from ben Sims at Dark Knights Halloween rave and I’m
certain in amongst Ben’s epic 2 hour masterclass he played a couple of these. ‘Sequence 6’ is peak time and
pounding , with tonnes of bleep wonkiness. ‘Old Times’ is a crips stripped back affair with subtle old school pads
and nautical noises which builds beautifully. ‘Raw Thoughts’ is another minimalistic effort, with distorted chimes
and a gritty underlying bass. My favourite of the EP though is ‘October 8’ (I’m guessing it was made 3 days after
my birthday) This is a powerful rattling number with marching percussion and a stonking hypnotic synth line
taking the track into a crazy journey through the multiverse. Epic tune!
B.S.E – WATCH OUT EP (INC SYRUS THE VIRUS REMIX) [KEEP ON TECHNO]
Chris (B.S.E) is one of the scenes good guys and a great DJ & Producer as well as being one of the men behind the ace
Sonance parties in London. He returns to the great Keep On Techno label with two great tracks. ‘Watch Out’ is a dark and
broody slice of purist techno with eerie sounding hypnotic synth work and moody drones, accompanied by some fine
percussive work. ‘Gray Run’ is a slow acidic monster, screeching throughout with some added sirens and bleeps in the
break. On remix duties is Syrus The Virus (fresh from releasing on Filth Infatuated’s landmark 100th release) Simon
delivers a cracking hard techno rework of ‘Watch Out’ which is quite stripped back but packs a thumping Gert kick,
militant marching percussion and a lovely metallic synth line. Add to this clever fx and edits and you have a mighty fine
remix that I will no doubt be rinsing over the coming months! Top stuff!
PERC – THE CUT OFF [PERC TRAX 100]
Perc Trax reaches the milestone of 100 releases (Blimey I remember playing all the really quirky early releases years ago,
how the label has changed over the years!) and it is only right that for this occasion, label owner and techno legend Perc
(Ali Wells) takes the reigns with what is his first album in seven years! There are 10 superb tracks on the album and its full
release is not until March (although this promo came through at the end of November) and there are a couple of
collaborations too (Sissel Wincent & EAS) The album starts with the dreamy melancholic intro of ‘Can You Imagine?’ which
soon turns nasty with Industrial breakbeats! There are three quirky interlude / electronica tracks – Heartbeat Popper, UK
Style and the lovely ambient textures and voices of the end track ‘Calcify’ There isn’t a bum track on the album. Milk
Snatcher’s Return, Static (feat Sissel Wincent) and Fett 23 are all bangers, but my favourites are the Pounding ‘Imperial
Leather’, the clanking and full blown distortion of ‘Full Goblin’ and ‘Cold Snap’ where EAS gets out his 303 for this epic
Hard Acid techno rumbler! Congratulations Ali Wells and Perc Trax, here’s to the next
HD SUBSTANCE – ACTRESS [HXAGRM RECORDS]
This is a very clever concept album from Spanish producer Hd Substance. All the music was made only
using hardware tools, with no computers involved (Think Sh 101, 303, 808, 909, Juno 6, Micro freak,
Wasp, model D etc) and all the tracks are named after famous Actress’s. 8 varying tracks (Actress’s) are
on offer: Bette Davis, Vivien Leigh, Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall, Marlene Dietrich etc but my favourites
are ’Greta Garbo’ with a futuristic techno bass heavy groover, ‘Katherine Hepburn’ which is a solid Electro
cut and ‘Joan Crawford’, which takes us down and old school sounding bleepy house journey from the
heady acid house days! Very original idea this and a great album to listen to in its entirety. Check it out!
Løuis L.P. – X-CODE EP [PLANET RHYTHM]
The ever reliable Planet Rhythm are back churning out epic EP’s and this has just come through from an
artist I’m not familiar with. Løuis L.P. After a bit of digging I can see he’s another Italian and has had some
cool releases on labels like MTZ Noir and Techno Vinyls to name but two. Four top tunes are included and
all are of a similar modern dark rolling techno style and the production is exquisite! But one track stands
out for me and that is ’Capsule’ As I’m sure you’re all aware I’m a sucker for an evil hypnotic synth and this
is what we have through the entirety of this 6 minute journey. The synth swings and changes throughout
giving this track all its energy with an underbelly of clanking offbeat kicks and shuffling hats. One for the
early hours this, love it!
