The National Electrical Code is a set of guidelines written to govern the installation of wiring and equipment in
commercial buildings and residential areas. These guidelines are revised every three years to ensure the safety of
human beings as well as property against fires and electrical explosion associated with electrical installations.
Although the National Electrical Code contains the suggested regulations governing the proper installation of wire
and cable, each state, city, county and municipality has the option to adopt part of the code, all of the code or write
one of its own. The local inspectors have the authority to approve or disallow any installation based on the National
Electrical Code or on the local code. The NEC is a good reference when questions arise about proper techniques for
particular installations, but local authorities should be contacted for verification.
