On behalf of the St. Paul’s Board of Trustees, we are delighted to share the 2022-2023 Annual Report with our
school community.
Inspired by our students and our mission, the Board turned its attention to articulating the community’s shared
vision for St. Paul’s future, resulting in the ratification of our school’s strategic plan: Spark Impact. Guided by a
strategic planning committee led by Trustees Gene Wade (Ella '21 and Maya '23) and Francine Anthony
(Schuyler '21), our Head of School Cheryl Ting, and experienced strategic planning consultant, Kawai Lai, we
implemented a comprehensive and efficient planning process - including set-up, discovery, design, and launch
phases - in nine months.
The committee spent months gathering data from community stakeholders in the form of surveys and focus
groups, as well as data from past accreditations, and the most recent strategic plan to determine emerging
themes. A 14-person task force - comprised of our Head of School, current and former Trustees, parents, faculty
and administrators - explored the themes as well as our school’s strengths and
opportunities to develop the strategic vision that will inform St. Paul’s next
iteration and evolution.

We can’t think of a better way to cap off our first year as co-chairs of the St.
Paul’s Board! We’re excited for what the future holds as we embark on Spark
Impact, and we look forward to your partnership.

A NEW (OLD) TRADITION:
WALK-THE-BLOCK FOR ST. PAUL’S
Last fall the St. Paul’s community returned to a tradition that began for us in the 1970s:
a walkathon. With the guidance of parent-mentor Cathy Carr, the Advancement team
launched the October event. Students gathered contributions from family and friends
and walked the .33-mile block from Montecito to Park View to Grand to support their
special school. A team of talented parents led by Sandy Chan, Kendal Hall, Brad
Huntzinger, and Leah Kelley, supported by a small army of volunteers, created an
epic carnival to celebrate the student’s efforts. St. Paul’s alumni were on hand to run
carnival games and assist with crafts. Alumni parents got in on the action, too!
After two years of pandemic limitations, gathering as a complete
community with students, faculty, parents, grandparents,
and alumni felt powerful and energizing.

A rekindled relationship leads to learning
How can we make our
community safer?
How do we work with
our neighbors to do it?
How do we raise our voices
in a way they can be heard?
Last Winter, our new CEL Coordinator Kate Klaire headed across the street to visit our
friends at St. Paul’s Towers. As a residence for seniors, the Towers had been
conservative about interacting with school children since the pandemic began.
Residents no longer came to the food co-op, and St. Paul’s students no longer made
their way through the Towers’s dining room to show off their costumes on Halloween.
But with pandemic restrictions lifted, Kate Klaire wanted to reconnect. She met with
Executive Director Connie Yuen and learned that residents were concerned about
pedestrian safety on Bay Place. After the meeting, rekindling the relationship with
St. Paul’s Towers became a priority. During a schoolwide Day of Service in honor of
MLK, Jr.’s birthday, K-1-2-8 buddies gathered in Parish Hall to write letters and make
drawings for senior penpals. Later, students from the seventh grade CEL class walked
to the Towers to meet with resident activist Nancy Eichler to interview her about
residents’ concerns.
AT THE INTERSECTION
HOW CURIOSITY, ADVOCACY, AND COMMUNITY COME
TOGETHER IN PROJECT-BASED LEARNING AT ST. PAUL’S
Last spring, these questions lay at the intersection of Montecito Avenue and Bay Place.
Efforts to address them opened up the kind of opportunities for community connection
and mutual aid that are core to Community Engaged Learning (CEL) at St. Paul’s.

From Committee to Curriculum
While the students were deepening connections with our neighbors, several faculty
members including Fourth Grade Teacher Emily Scroggs were involved in
conversations about community engagement and cross-grade community building.
When Emily heard about the CEL students’ meeting with neighborhood advocates at
the Towers, she saw a strong link to her fourth grade math and social studies
curriculum. She brought the information to her class, and her students developed a
strategy: collect data about safety at the intersection of Bay and Montecito, compile
and analyze the data, and use the data to advocate for change. Over several weeks, the
Fourth Grade counted cars and bikes, noting how many stopped (or not) at the stop
signs, as well as the number of pedestrians crossing at different times of day. They
presented their findings to the entire school at Chapel.
Raising our collective voices
Immediately following Chapel, classes gathered in buddy pairings to take action.
Students wrote dozens and dozens of letters to the City Council and Mayor Sheng
Thao. Fittingly, Fourth and Seventh Grade joined forces. Assistant to the Mayor
Brandon Harami reported that the mayor and her office were impressed at the volume
of letters and their content. The students had gotten their attention. And they saw
results. The letter writing campaign led to extensive tree trimming to improve visibility of
traffic signs, a new white curb to better define the space at our lower school campus,
and crosswalks improved with stripes. A more extensive renovation of the intersection
is currently in the planning stages.
The students’ campaign has set up an ongoing relationship between the school and the
mayor’s office. St. Paul’s staff attend regular meetings with city officials and advocates
from the Towers and other organizations. Our involvement in the city’s process furthers
and deepens our important connection with the city and our neighbors. Community
Engaged Learning, indeed.

In 2022-2023 the St. Paul’s parent community was “Together…and better than ever!” as
the year’s OakTown theme aptly described. We came together to support major events,
including the new Walk-the-Block for St. Paul’s and OakTown. We supported one
another as parents and shared knowledge about the community. The Parent
Association Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee expanded the roster of Parent
Affinity Groups to seven including both race-based and other affinity categories such
as Adoptive Parents, Queer Parents and Caregivers, and Parents/Caregivers of
Neurodivergent Children. The Parent Connection Committee kept us fueled with Lake
Walks and monthly coffee before Chapel.
We are so grateful to our diligent room parents for tracking volunteer needs and
important dates while cultivating community at the grade level. Our thoughtful and
organized Room Parent Coordinators, Sandy Chan, Natasha Mader, and Amanda
Judge - who have each given so much to the community in their many years as St.
Paul’s parents - were steady leaders for the room parent team.
Parent volunteers are such an important part of the St. Paul’s experience for kids and
adults alike - thank you for supporting our program with your time and talent. A special
thank you to Sugey Bragdon, who led the Book Fair effort and co-chaired OakTown
with yours truly, and to the PA Board for sharing their time, their energy, and their ideas.

EIGHTH GRADE
GOES TO WASHINGTON
At St. Paul’s we ask students to challenge their assumptions and lean into challenges.
Toward that end, our eighth graders traveled to Washington, D.C. in May for what we
hope will be a new annual trip. The experience brought together many of the values and
lessons that students have learned during their time at St. Paul’s as we visited many
places that align with our school’s curriculum, mission, and values.
Mr. Anthony Hopkins’s eighth grade social studies syllabus says, among other things,
that students will work “to understand how our personal identities are influenced by the
past and present.” When the students visited Washington as a culmination of their
St. Paul’s experience, they did just that.
Our first stop was the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Students were greeted by Kevin Strait, uncle to Zachary ‘23 and Nico ‘21, who curated
the recently opened Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures exhibit. Students drew
connections to their visit to the Mothership: Voyage into Afrofuturism exhibit at the
Oakland Museum of California.
At the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum students made connections between the
literature they read in lower and middle school and the exhibits at the museum. Our
evening hiking guide was blown away by our students’ knowledge and perspective on
U.S. History, and their sophisticated understanding of their own relationships to it.
Students were able to articulate critical information about the histories of the land on
which D.C. is built, and whose voices were both excluded and included in those
histories. Throughout the trip, our students demonstrated maturity, especially when
they witnessed people telegraphing values that differed from their own.
The trip to Washington exemplifies how the St. Paul’s program stands at the nexus of
Academics, DEIB, and Community Engaged Learning. Our graduates are poised to be
changemakers in the Bay and beyond.

WELCOME BACK
In May, we invited the Class of 2019 back to campus for a Reunion Picnic to reconnect,
reminisce, and wish them well on their adventures after high school. A tour of the Lower
School and visit to the Spring Art Show brought back warm memories. Graduated
parents joined the fun because St. Paul’s families never miss a chance to connect with
old friends. No one wanted to leave!

The Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James) is a network of trails in Spain, Portugal,
and France spanning around 600 miles, and covering beautiful natural landscapes,
quiet villages, and historic sites. The trail has been walked since the early ninth century
when thousands of pilgrims made the journey from their homes to this Spanish city.
Walking the Camino was a long-time dream fulfilled, and every bit as beautiful and
healing as I imagined. Walking almost 200 miles over the northern coast of Spain, I was
able to do some of my favorite activities: walk, explore a new culture and landscape,
and eat amazing food!
This experience is also linked to the sixth grade humanities curriculum. During this
school year, we have been developing a Moving Stories unit, where we explore the
relationship between migration, identity, and experience by learning from migration
stories and connecting those stories to ourselves, our histories, our community, and our
world.
