HEFFIELD Kitchen Interiors
undertake domestic
transformations both large and
small and the family-run company was
able to demonstrate its talents to the
max with this exciting project.
Barbara and Ashley Tandy have lived in their
detached Stannington home for five years and
last summer welcomed the SKI team into their
home to completely strip out their existing
extended kitchen and replace it with a new
one, featuring all manner of mod cons.
The Tandys had been pointed in the
direction of the independent Sheffield
business - based at Meadowhead - by a
friend’s recommendation and they were
delighted with the professional service they
received from start to finish.
After taking on board many suggestions from
the company at the planning stage, they were hugely impressed when they
were allowed to take samples home with them and were then shown
digital images of how their new kitchen would look.
Sheffield Kitchen Interiors projectmanaged
all works and ensured everyone -
plasterer, fitters, electrician, plumber, skip
collector and more - all arrived at the house
on time.
Said Barbara: “From speaking to the girls
in the showroom to welcoming workers
into our home, nothing was too much
trouble for anyone. The plasterer worked
like a Ninja, all the fitters were second to
none and everyone was very patient with
us.”
The many shaker, beaded kitchen doors
and drawers are in cashmere with natural
Lancaster oak colour units and knobs and

by an Abode four-in-one
tap, meaning the Tandys
have instant boiling water
and also chilled, filtered
water.
The couple didn’t want
to see an extractor hood above their cooking area, so a Siemens airventing
hob was installed with a built-in extractor fan which draws steam
and food smells downwards through filters, then
recirculates clean air back into the kitchen.
Their twin Siemens ovens are also state-of-the-art and can be
programmed remotely via wi-fi. A fridge, freezer and washer are integrated
into the design, plus there are many other attractive features including an
alcove which houses a coffee-maker, an illuminated cabinet to show off
glassware and, beneath that, a drinks chiller and solid oak wine rack.
The Tandys put their fabulous new kitchen to the ultimate test at
Christmas, cooking dinner for seven.
Said Barbara: “It was so easy and everything ran smoothly.”

KNOW how many local people avidly
read Active8, not least because
whenever I speak about a particular issue
in these pages, I tend to get a deluge of
casework off the back of it!
But I know how much it’s really valued for
its promotion of local community events,
groups and businesses, particularly the
independent ones. And in S8 we are so
blessed with so many of them.
That’s why it’s a great privilege to be writing my eighth (!)
annual introduction to this Directory edition about everything
we have to celebrate about S8.
Although I live in Norfolk Park, many of you will know I spend
lots of my time in the community.
I’ve always been keen for my office
to be a proper part of the
community I’m privileged to
represent, and we’re surrounded by
amazing businesses – Mandala
Café, Café Des Amis, Carrot and Stick and of course the famous
Rails of Sheffield (As Shadow Transport Secretary I am, of
course, now obliged to be obsessed with all-things rail!)
And, of course, we have amazing pubs in the area where I’ll
almost certainly be spotted with my dog Milo, whether it’s the
Brothers Arms or the Sheaf or the Boston Arms, which does a
cracking quiz on a Sunday or the brilliant 8new Herd up in

A long-known, but little discussed aspect of our lives is how our home

HEFFIELD could justly claim to be called the ugliest
town in the Old World... Not my words, of course, but
those of George Orwell.
Although I was impressed with his work, 1984, when I read it, I’m
absolutely not impressed with this quote from his Wigan Pier
book in the 1930s!
In this special Directory edition of Active8, I’m going to talk
about my three favourite places in Sheffield, which in my opinion,
prove that Mr Orwell’s
judgement of the city is
completely outdated.
With one-third of
Sheffield being inside the
Peak District, it would
almost be rude not to
start with it.
The national park is filled
with undulating valleys
and adorned with rivers
such as the River Derwent
whose tributary, Burbage
Brook, earns a spot on my
list of favourite places,
although strictly speaking
neither fall within city
limits.
A perfect all-rounder: the
walking routes beside the
water in Padley Gorge are
George Orwell
great in all seasons, whilst
the brook itself is the
perfect spot for swimming during summertime.
As we have the largest theatre complex outside of London, it’s
no surprise there’s lots of shows to see.
My favourites of 2023 included the tours of Agatha Christie’s
‘The Mousetrap’ and ‘And Then There Were None’ as well as
‘Standing at the Sky’s Edge’ – a musical based on Sheffield’s
own Park Hill flats that’s about to start it’s run on London’s West
End.
Finally, I must mention my favourite restaurants in Sheffield.
For my birthday meal later this month, it will definitely be a
toss-up between Unit Burger and Parthenonas, which in turn
make the best burgers and Greek food in Sheffield, in my
opinion.
I’m confident that if Mr Orwell spent a day in the city in 2024,
visiting my favourite places, he’d reassess his opinion of Sheffield
and recognise it as the great city it is!

A Norton couple could not be more thrilled with their new
fitted furniture from Dronfield based company, Supafit
Bedrooms.
The couple wanted something different that stood out and
were recommended by friends to pop into Supafit’s
showroom and take a look at their displays.
“When we arrived, we were greeted by Jo who asked us if
we had anything in mind as to what style we wanted -
modern, traditional, Scandinavian etc and we honestly had
no idea,” said the couple.
Visiting the showroom’s first floor, they were able to look
at all the styles and colours available. As soon as they saw
the Stockholm-style door they knew instantly that this was
the style they loved.
They booked in a design visit for the same week, Jenna
visited their home to measure up, did the design and
quotation the next day and the couple were given a date for
fitting only three weeks later!
“The process was so quick and efficient,” they said.
The couple chose a dakar colour for their wardrobes and also
decided on a beautiful antique brass lined T-bar.
"The handles just finished it off perfectly; we are so happy Jo
suggested these as we would never have considered them
ourselves."
The couple were so happy with the service from Supafit that they
have also booked in for a media unit and
spare bedroom.
The verdict? “The price was
competitive, everyone we dealt with was
so friendly and helpful and the quality
and fitting is superb. There was no
reason to shop around for quotes for our
other rooms.”

25-year plan for cemeteries

HEFFIELD people are being asked to have their say on the
future of bereavement services in the city.
The Sheffield City Council Bereavement and Coronial Service is
responsible for managing 16 cemeteries, and two crematoriums and
gardens of remembrance, as well as providing residents with care and
support during the most difficult periods.
The service is currently devising a new strategy that will suit the city’s
needs for the next 25 years and beyond and residents’ views are
being sought on the aims. These are to find new land on which to
build more modern, greener cemeteries and improve facilities and
provisions on current sites.
Coun Richard Williams, chair of the council’s Communities, Parks and
Leisure Committee, said: “We want develop a strategy that will suit our
city’s needs for the next 25 years and beyond.
“Our goal is to devise an ambitious and far-reaching plan that will
support our growing city long after we’re gone.
“Whilst it’s not imminent, we know that our existing burial space will
eventually get to capacity at our existing cemeteries.”

HIS year will see plans for the restoration of Graves Park’s historic Rose Garden
Cafe move ahead.
The 1927-built café was shut suddenly in July 2022 by Sheffield City Council due to
structural concerns, reopening as takeaway-only venue.
Following a public campaign to save the much-loved building, the council agreed to work in
partnership with stakeholders to restore and refurbish it.
The authority has been working with the Save the Rose Garden Café group and the
Friends of Graves Park to establish the partnership and push forward all elements of the
project.
Local people are being urged to donate to the restoration by visiting the Friends of Graves
Park JustGiving Page.

EPAIR cafés are well
established in many towns
and there is one at Harland Works
in S2 and another in Chesterfield.
Greener Greenhill now want to do
the same in S8 and are gathering
together a team of ‘fixers’ for
anything from sewing repairs to
small electrical items, IT equipment
and items of jewellery.
The idea is to hold regular sessions where people can come
along to have their items repaired – and even be shown how to
carry out small repairs themselves.
Local volunteers Graham Marsden and Jean Compton are
leading the initiative which has already generated a lot of interest
in the area.
Graham said: “We buy an awful lot of stuff and we throw a lot of
this away within six months. We also throw away a lot of broken
items that could easily be repaired. Why?
“Over recent years we’ve lost the skills to do ‘everyday’ repairs.
At a time when the cost of living crisis is making life increasingly
difficult for more and more people, repairing broken items will
save money.
Jean added: “If a repair means giving new life to an appliance or
a garment then why not try it? This helps the planet too, by not

throwing it in landfill or sending it to the incinerator”.
Greener Greenhill co-ordinator Lindy Stone said the group
would like to hear from anyone with skills to share.
“Fixers aren’t required to be experts, just to have some of the
knowledge, skills and possibly tools and be generous enough to
share these. Sessions will last just three hours and there will be
no requirement for volunteers to attend every one.”
Graham added: “We won’t be operating at the same scale as
the BBC’s ‘Repair Shop’ but we will definitely be extending the
same warm welcome – and we’ll be offering cuppas and cakes
too!”
The first session will be in March with more details to be
announced in Active8, via social media or contact Greener

OCAL residents are among those behind an exciting
project to celebrate Sheffield as the place where
football began and where its rules were written.
Sheffield Home of Football was registered as a new charity last
year. Its aims are to establish a programme of education and
awareness about the city’s footballing history; the creation of a
Sheffield Footballing Heritage Museum and the collection of
memorabilia, trophies, programmes, historical records and other
items for digital and physical exhibition.
SHOF has a city-wide brief embracing all of Sheffield’s football
history and surrounding districts.
Three of its new board of 11 trustees are S8 residents; local author
John Stocks, historian John Clarke, who is also the company
secretary, and journalist and ex- BBC Radio Sheffield presenter
Andy Kershaw, who is media officer. Origami master and author,
Nick Robinson, who also lives locally, has developed the group’s
website, which also features a digital museum.
The charity has appointed Nick Partridge BEM, the former head of
Sheffield City Council’s Libraries & Archives service, as its new
chief executive.
Andy said: “The Charity Commission was adamant that we should
have a clear educational purpose to enable us to become a
registered charity, and so football-related walks, talks and lectures
will be central to our work along with outreach to schools,
businesses and community groups, in order to spread the message
that Sheffield is the home of football and the place where the rules
of the modern game were written.
“In 2024 we'll be raising our profile with more public events linked
to our educational mission,” said Andy.
The team from SHOF held a successful volunteers evening at the
Little Mesters Tap Bar in Woodseats and the Little Mesters Brewing
Co, based at Mitchell’s Wine Merchants, in Meadowhead, is

lager called - unsurprisingly - Sheffield Home of Football.
Andy continued: “We're continuing the search for suitable
premises for the Football Heritage Museum in Sheffield and we are
now actively looking at several locations and offers of help.”

Millennium Gallery along with dozens of other groups. And the first
of the charity’s monthly series of talks during 2024 off kicked-off at
the Cross Scythes pub in Norton Lees.

the Home of Football. Sheffield FC, Hallam FC and Sheffield
Wednesday FC are the oldest, second, and third oldest existing
association football clubs in the world.
Sandygate is the oldest football ground in the world and Bramall
Lane is the oldest stadium in the world to be hosting professional
football. The Youdan Cup is the oldest knockout cup in the world.

Importance of feeding wild birds
There is plenty of activity in the wildlife
garden at the start of the year as a whole
host of birds return to seek out garden
feeders. Prof Ian Rotherham explains why

E had cold and even snowy weather for a few
weeks back in late November, so that by early
December across the region, the wintry conditions
pushed large numbers of smaller birds towards garden
feeders.
By this time, the combination of exhaustion of the autumn glut
of fruit and berries in hedgerows and woodland edge, meant
food on bird-tables and other garden feeders was increasingly
important.
An advantage of having fed the birds
through the summer months,
albeit with reduced amounts, is
that by late autumn and into

and great tits,
they are hardwired
to
remember
where to
find the
easy
supplies of
peanuts, fatballs,
and
sunflower
seeds.
By late
summer, the
numbers of
birds visiting the
garden had
dropped. Indeed,
from August until late
October there were
relatively few visitors as
this is when mixed flocks of
foraging titmice or finches
patrolled the wider countryside for
the easy pickings.
However, since early November, garden visiting
began to grow quite dramatically, with, in my own garden,
flocks of up to 30 or more blue tits and good numbers of great
tits and coal tits.
These birds were joined by the occasional long-tailed tit, and
even on a few occasions a tree-creeper, although that
remained apart from the flock.
Various finches also arrived by late November, with
chaffinches, goldfinches, and then decent numbers of
greenfinches. In the case of the greenfinches especially, it
is really good to see them return with ten or more visiting at
once.

They declined sharply due to an unpleasant disease probably
associated with dirty garden feeders causing infection. In our
area, they were absent for about ten years but are now back,
with several pairs breeding around the local gardens last
summer.
The winter visitors are dominated by flocks of smaller birds,
but these are joined by some larger ones too. The now superabundant
woodpigeon is an ever-present and sometimes
problem species in most gardens.
They do hoover up any seed scattered on the ground or
falling from hanging feeders and have even taken to trying an
assault on the feeders directly. However, being large and
cumbersome, they struggle with nut-holders, fat-balls, and
hanging seed dispensers.
But other visitors include the stunning, ring-necked
parakeet, and other quite exotic-looking birds
such as great spotted woodpecker and
nuthatch. The parakeets are
amongst the cleverest and
most adept of our garden
birds and are spreading
across the region with
the first recorded
sightings back in the
1980s.
Since then, they
have adapted to
garden feeding
and take food
from peanut
holders and
sunflower
seed
dispensers.
Along with
titmice, they
love spiked
apples on the
feeders.
Visiting
thrushes also
relish the apples
but so far it has
been a quiet year
for blackbirds and
the other thrushes.
My robins have learnt
to come for dried
mealworms, so I deliberately
spill a few when filling the
feeders for visiting starlings.
The robins find mealworms irresistible
though it also helps if you ‘talk’ to them as well
to draw them in and they become very tame.
Pursing the lips and sucking makes a noise that robins
seem to identify with. Poachers used to use a similar
technique to attract all sorts of inquisitive birds and mammals to
them.

ORTON Lees began as a tiny
community centred around
Bishops’ House, built in 1554, and
of course still a landmark today.
Over the centuries, the once
surrounding rural area has gradually
given way to housing and other
development.
The darkest time in Norton Lees’
modern history came in 1940 when
many homes were bombed during
the Sheffield Blitz.
Those with an interest in the
locality’s past come together as
Norton Lees Local History Group.
The group was first set up in 2007
and has continued to meet regularly
ever since, except for during Covid-19
lockdowns.
Describing itself, as “an informal,
friendly group”, NLLHG welcomes
everyone.
The group’s Helen Egan explains:
“We not only have visiting speakers,
quite often people from the History
Group itself give one-off talks,
meaning you get something a bit
different.
“Our 2024 programme includes talks
on the history of local schools, roofs, and Graves Park. We also
have a talk by local author John Stocks.
“Twice a year, the group hosts a ‘Bring & Share’, where people
bring along items of local history interest - the theme for the
January meeting was ‘Collections’.
“Every year we run a couple of field meetings in the Spring and
Summer. In the past these have included Meersbrook Hall,
Meersbrook Park, Graves Park, Derbyshire Lane Cemetery,
Wincobank Hill, Gleadless Valley and, of course, Norton Lees
itself.”
HLLHG have scheduled a walk in the area’s two parks

Graves Park project updates
B
OTH of the current Graves Park projects, ‘Finding Lost Norton
Park: Digging Deeper for All’ (supported by the National
Lottery Heritage Fund), and ‘Adapting to Climate Change’
(supported by the Graves Trust) are continuing apace.
The heritage project has seen progress on discovering lost medieval
wood-banks, and industrial charcoal hearths, harking back to Norton’s
industrial past of nearly 1,000 years ago. Training events, guided
walks and community activities are adding to the field-based research
along with training volunteers to interpret ancient documents.
The climate change and biodiversity project has seen field events to
help local ‘eco-champions’ record winter birdlife. Information is
needed on which species are in and around the park and where they
are feeding or else gathering in winter. Volunteers can help guide
future management of the parkand monitor increases or decreases in
particular species.
This springtime, help is needed to record migrant birds and breeding
species throughout the park and beyond. A free programme of winter
talks on heritage and wildlife themes is continuing through until April.

Boulder recalls dark
days of pandemic
T
HIS artwork can now be found in a corner of Graves
Park, reflecting Sheffield's visually impaired
community's thoughts on the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind Covid Memory
Boulder Poem was written by The Mappin Writers, SRSB's
creative writing group.
The carvings are by local artist Jason Turpin-Thomson and
include references to mobile phones for communication and
basket weaving at the charity’s old workshops and school.
The artwork, funded from the Covid-19 Community Memorial
Fund, was part of a wider project run by Sheffield Council and
Compassionate Sheffield to enable local communities to come
together, reflect on their experiences from the pandemic and
engage in memorial activity together.
The boulder is part of a small sensory and heritage garden
created to mark the 160th anniversary of the SRSB in 2020.
It is sited at the entrance to the park’s Rose Garden which
leads up from the children’s play area.
HE number of more polluting
vehicles driving through
Sheffield has fallen by up to two
thirds following the launch of
Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone in
February last year.
Sheffield City Council says the drop
was revealed in a survey done in
October, 2023, and compared with the
same survey from November, 2022.
Big improvements in compliance were
shown across all vehicle types. Taxis
are now 96% compliant, compared to
77% before the zone was launched and
light goods vehicles are now 84%
compliant, compared to 59% before.
The data shows that vehicles in
Sheffield haven’t just improved within
the zone boundary, but the benefit is
also seen outside of it.
The SRSB has been at the forefront of local sight loss services
since 1860.
The garden features Queen Elizabeth roses, a tribute to
Queen Elizabeth II and Eliza Harrison, who was instrumental
in the formation of the organisation, along with her sister,
Ann.
An information board in the garden reveals more about the
charity’s history and work.
Clean Air Zone showing results

Coun Ben Miskell, chair of the transport,
regeneration and climate committee at the
council, said: “Hundreds of people in
Sheffield die prematurely each year due to
air pollution. Cleaning up the quality of the
air we breathe around Sheffield is rightly
one of our top priorities and this data
shows that motorists are helping by
moving to cleaner vehicles in response to
the Clean Air Zone.
“Ahead of the launch of the CAZ, we
petitioned the government hard to provide
the best possible financial support
package for local people and it’s great to
see so many people applying for support
to upgrade their vehicles.

the D-Day landings is to
be commemorated in June
One of the last surviving heroes of
World War Two has celebrated his
100th birthday. Deborah Wain

EN Simpson was called up at the age of
17 and served in the Royal Corps of
Signals as a driver. He took part in the
Normandy landings which are being marked
by the nation on June 6th – the 80th
anniversary of D-Day itself.
Ken celebrated the special occasion at his home
in Beauchief and he received a card from King
Charles and Queen Camilla.
Ken was born one of seven children to a family
of funeral directors and grew up at Fitzwalter
Road, attending City Road School until the age of
14.
His Army training took him initially to Catterick,
North Yorkshire, and then on to Castle Douglas,
in Scotland.
There, troops were being prepared for the largest
seaborne invasion in history, and what was to be
the start of the liberation of Western Europe from
Nazi tyranny.
Ken and his comrades boarded a boat at the
port of Tilbury in Essex – he remembers many
men being “crammed in” to the vessel - and they
were to land on ‘Utah’ beach.
He said: “The Germans shot at us as we
dropped in. It was perilous, you couldn’t get any
cover at all. We lost a lot of men.”
By the time the war ended Ken was in Germany.
Incident
He recalled one incident when he and other
soldiers were put up in a school where, one night,
he found a man – a lorry driver - eating from a
dustbin.
“I took him to the table, because he was doing
his best, and we gave him some proper food.”
Once home in Sheffield, Ken worked as a lorry
driver himself, delivering materials to building
sites. Later he took up a position with the
University of Sheffield’s transport department.
At weekends, Ken drove coaches for muchloved
Sheffield United Tours, taking Sheffielders
on excursions to places including the Isle of
Wight. He retired in 1988.
Ken describes coach driving as one of his main
hobbies and in fact he was still driving a car up to
the age of 96. His other interests included
woodwork, fishing and gardening.
Ken was married to his wife Marjorie for 69
years until she sadly died in 2019.
On Remembrance Sunday last year, Ken laid a
wreath during commemorations at Dronfield War
Memorial. He received a spontaneous round of
applause from the many hundreds gathered as
he made the poignant gesture.

fascinated me, so I began to
learn how to do this through
Adobe Photoshop.

as a way to relax, but I like

Developers have published further details of the
sports complex proposed for Meadowhead, as
well as images of how it would look. Here’s an

HEFFIELD FC and Sheffield Eagles rugby league team
are aiming to build a 5,000-seat stadium and other
facilities at Sheffield Transport Sports Club.
What has been named the Sheffield Sporting Club masterplan is
described by the project team as representing a “bold vision” for
the world's oldest football club.
The plan states: “It combines historical references, modern
functionality, inclusivity, and a strong sense of community through
its architectural concept. This visionary project is set to become a
symbol of Sheffield FC's enduring legacy and its commitment to
the future of sports in the region.”
The stadium's design “pays homage to Sheffield FC's history,
evoking a sense of
nostalgia.”
Its vertical fins represent
cladding seen on historic
stadiums and the stripes
traditionally worn by the
club’s players.
The scheme includes a
football academy, cricket
ground and pavilion, and a
sports hall, with illuminated
features, which is
envisaged as being used
for wheelchair rugby
league and netball.
However, concerns have
been raised locally about
the impact on traffic in what
is already a busy area.
The site would have a new
main access point off the main A61 Chesterfield Road South,
together with 458 car parking spaces and seven coach bays.
Developers say surveys are underway to identify where wider
highway improvements in the area may be needed, being done in
consultation with Highways Development Control at Sheffield City
Council.
The development would offer improved access to the site for all
modes of travel, including potential new bus connections, as well
as better pedestrian and cycle facilities in the vicinity.
The project team also say Highways Development Control are
keen to use some of the car park for use as a Park & Ride spot
for city centre workers.
A full planning application will be submitted to Sheffield City
Council in February, with a decision expected in May. If approved,
construction would begin in September and the stadium would be
ready by November, 2025, with the final work due to be
completed by February, 2026.
Alongside the scheme is a proposal for the redevelopment for
housing of Sheffield FC’s existing football stadium at the old
Coach & Horses ground, Sheffield Road, Dronfield, and a parcel
of land to its west side. That proposal will go before NE
Derbyshire District Council.

Two public consultation events were held at Dronfield and
Meadowhead before Christmas.
Norton resident Pauline Fleming, who attended the
Meadowhead meeting, said she had concerns about further traffic
congestion in the area leading to motorists taking short-cuts
through small local roads.
She added: “St James Retail Park has had a serious impact on
parking on local roads as the provided car park is woefully
inadequate. For starters, employees of the site park on local
roads as do employees of the car dealership.
“Living on Norton Park Road, I have returned from work on more
the one occasion and struggled to turn into my own drive. I have
also had to ask a neighbour to help back me out due to
inconsiderate parking.
“The stadium is proposing 400 car parking spaces for a 5,000
seater arena. Really?
“I was informed that as most kick-off times would be late
afternoon at the weekend it would be quieter. Obviously they
have not taken shopping hours into account. The days of early
closing are long gone.”

A thought regarding the proposed Sheffield FC Stadium, at
Meadowhead; I am a resident of Greenhill.
Is there a possibility that the existing Supertram network could
be extended from Gleadless to run past Lightwood, along
Bochum Parkway and towards Meadowhead?
This seems an obvious solution to traffic congestion not only in
relation to serving the proposed stadium but the considerable
local population in the Meadowhead area as well as St James
Retail Park.
Whilst I support the stadium plans and Sheffield FC, the
increased traffic will place a further considerable strain on the
local road network. On the face of it, this seems a very workable
solution.

husband and I are totally against this.
Some years ago, Tesco wanted to build on the same spot and we
had a petition against it and we won. I have lived in Greenhill
village all my life and traffic through Greenhill Parkway never stops.
Building the retail park has brought traffic to a standstill on
Meadowhead, Greenhill Avenue, Chesterfield Road and Norton,
not forgetting Lowedges. This is the last open space in Greenhill.

I really do think that building the Stadium at Meadowhead would
have a huge impact on the already busy roads.
A better solution would be to build on land currently known as
Greenhill (previously Lowedges) Park plus land at the bottom end.
There could be different access roads, thus allowing cars to travel
on varying routes.
The parkland is huge, facilities little used, and no parking.
It would be wonderful to retain the green, open area of
Meadowhead, offer this to the local community as a safe
environment to enjoy as a replacement park, and build the
stadium complex on the hidden land currently known as Greenhill
Park.

Dear Active8,
I am writing to express my deep reservations about the
proposed stadium at Meadowhead. As a local resident, who lives
in one of the first few houses on Norton Lane, the impact on the
quality of our lives – both during construction and when the
stadium is completed – will be considerable.
Our three main areas of concern are:
• Traffic noise that will be generated with the proposed increase
in road size as my understanding is that the new road layout will
include an increase in the number of lanes on at least two of the
roads feeding into the roundabout. We already suffer from
increased traffic noise since the expansion of the roundabout a
few years ago and the construction of the VW/Audi garages and
St James Retail Park. We responded to this by paying to have
acoustic double-glazing fitted on our house and planting a large
hedge in the front garden. Despite these measures we are
constantly bothered by the road noise.
• Disruption and noise levels during construction of the site. I
work from home five days a week and the noise will be
intolerable. The construction, if it goes to plan, will be for two
years, I believe.
At the public consultation I asked what length of time the
construction site would be operating and was informed it was
likely to be 8am-4pm. Those intersect with my working hours. I
am also unwilling to accept that those hours would not be
extended if the project fell behind schedule.
• Congestion, noise and disruption on match days. These will be
days that need to be planned around as there will be an
unavoidable inconvenience.
Obviously, we would like permission to develop the site to be
refused! But at the very least there needs to be consideration
given to the impact on residents.
Solutions I proposed at the public consultation, and which
seemed to be met with some level of consideration by all parties
concerned, were:
• Acoustic deafening planting of a large number of mature trees
on Meadowhead roundabout, along the central reservation on
Bochum Parkway, on Norton Lane near to the pedestrian
crossing, and in front of the proposed stadium site on the A61 and
towards Greenhill.
Alter the proposed new road layout so that traffic travelling to
and from the Stadium from the South side would not be directed
around the roundabout as they left. This would involve finding a
way to take traffic directly onto the A61 travelling south from the
stadium.
I cannot express strongly enough the impact this proposed
stadium will have on the quality of our lives – both during
construction and from ongoing traffic noise and inconvenience.

Three cheers for St John Cadets

HREE St John Ambulance Cadets
from the Sheffield Youth Unit,
based in S8, have recently been
honoured.
Ellis Catton-Norton, aged 13, was
recognised by HRH The Princess Royal at
the first aid volunteers organisation’s
annual Young Achievers awards.
The event, held at the Priory Church in
London, celebrated St John Ambulance
Badgers, Cadets and young carers, who
have made outstanding contributions in
their communities.
Ellis joined the local unit, which mum Faye
manages, as a Badger in 2018 and then
progressed to become a Cadet.
He was recognised for ‘actively and
selflessly caring for others, showing
bravery, compassion and courage, and
overcoming personal challenges whilst
doing all of the above to a high standard.’
During the reception, the Princess Royal,
who is Commandant-in-Chief - Youth of St
John Ambulance, spoke with dozens of
young people, who had travelled from
across the country, and heard directly how
their actions have positively impacted

It’s about time!
W
ALKING past a local bus shelter, I
noticed a guide to the 24-hour
clock to help passengers navigate
timetables.
Paradoxically, the lengthy illustration
explained that the 24-hour clock exists to
avoid confusion with a.m. and pm. It set my
mind ticking (see what I did there?) about the
complexities of telling the time.
The 24-hour clock is recognised as the
international standard format for time and
you might be forgiven for thinking it’s a
modern construct.
In its present form it is relatively modern,
but the concept dates back to Ancient Egypt.
The Egyptians apparently divided the dark
hours into 12 sections based on the
movement of stars across the night sky and
created 12 corresponding hours from dawn.
The format had become well established by
the 15th century in Italy, and it’s not surprising
that the incessant striking of clocks often
wore out their rope mechanisms!
Meanwhile, some countries, including
England of course, measured time in two 12-
hour periods – a.m. and p.m. Ante meridiem
translates from Latin as ‘before midday’, the
time before the sun has crossed the
meridien, and post meridiem, ‘after midday’,
after the sun has crossed the meridian. The meridian is a circle on
the surface of the earth that passes through the poles.
As some have pointed out, at exactly noon, the sun is at its
highest point in the sky and directly over the meridian so is
neither a.m. nor p.m.
Convention states that we use 12am to refer to midnight and
12pm to midday but I have seen this scrambled so many times,
perhaps because a.m. denotes morning, yet it’s midnight, and
vice versa.
To avoid confusion in making appointments, the addition of
noon or midday is generally tagged on to 12pm, although it is
perhaps unnecessary. No-one really expects to have a meeting or
lunch at midnight!

how to tell the time are well documented’
Which brings me to the term ‘noon’. Again, from a Latin root, it
derives from nona hora, or ninth hour. In medieval times noon fell
at 3pm, nine hours after a monk’s traditional rising hour of 6am.
Confused yet?
It remains unclear what caused midday to be known as noon but
it had happened some time before 1300.
Like many changes in society, the 24-hour clock was adopted in
the UK during a war. In this case it was when the British forces
formally took it on in World War I, presumably for precision. In the
United States, the 24-hour clock is popularly referred to as
Military Time.
Since then, the use of the 24-hour clock has grown steadily in
England with computers and phones – the modern way of
checking the time – having a default 24-hour clock.
However, many of us still like traditional clock face in our homes
or on our wrists and digital technology offers us the option of
having an analogue display if we prefer.
Terminology linked to clock faces is still very much alive and
kicking, like o’clock, a contraction of the phrase ‘of the clock’. In

It’s one of the mind-boggling complications of

The difficulties of teaching young children how to tell the time
are well documented, as firstly they often don’t grasp how it
relates to their own experiences. But, beyond that, the numbers
of time are a new concept given counting and metric
measurements are based around multiples of ten
While the aim is for children to be able to read the traditional
clock and its hour and minutes hands by the age of seven, some
lose the skill due to their use of smart devices.
It was reported that GCSE exam halls were ditching analogue
clocks as children were struggling to read them.
All of this makes you wonder: Is time running out for the
traditional 12-hour clock?
2024 is a leap year when, as happens once every four years, we
slip an extra day into our calendar - February 29th.
The adjustment works to keep our annual calendar and the
passing of seasons properly aligned as the number of the Earth’s
revolutions is not the same as it takes the Earth to get around the
sun.
If we didn’t include a leap day once every four years, we would
lose nearly six hours each year. That doesn’t sound much but,
over a century, it would add up to 24 days.
Many ancient calendars, including the Hebrew, Chinese and
Buddist calendars occasionally required the addition of an entire
leap month.
But the first leap year in the modern sense was in 1752 when 11
days were ‘lost’ from the month of September when Britain
adopted the Gregorian calendar.
Leap day customs have evolved, such as February 29th being a
day when women can propose marriage to men, and those who
are born on leap days – known as leaplings – can have fun telling
people their ‘real’ age.
In addition to the leap year, we need to fine tune time further by
adding leap seconds to keep the seasons from drifting. This
century this has happened in 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2015. What

BYD as it is more commonly known - was one of
the fastest growing car manufacturers you had
probably never heard of but, now in 2024 with
the announcement that its electric car sales
have toppled the ubiquitous Tesla from the
podium, it is suddenly headline news. Carmel

ASED in China but with a European headquarters in
the Netherlands, Build Your Dreams, or Biyadi to give it
its Chinese name, began its assault on the UK car market
some months ago with the launch of the Atto 3 SUV in
March 2023, swiftly followed by the Dolphin hatchback and
more recently the sporty Seal – all pure electric passenger
cars.
The company was founded in February, 1995, and initially
specialised in electronics, new energy and rail transit with auto
manufacturing being a relatively recent addition. Its aim is to
create zero-emission energy solutions that reduce global reliance
on fossil fuels.
Its impact can be evidenced by the fact that it now employs
more than 40,000 engineers and technicians, has submitted
applications for over 37,000 patent rights and owns around
25,000 patents. So serious stuff.
One of its biggest successes has been its pioneering battery
technology which can be found in the majority of smart phones
and laptops. That in turn led to the development of its
sophisticated, super-strong, super-efficient, award-winning Blade
battery, as featured in its passenger cars.
In addition, BYD is very proud of the fact that all of its car
components are produced in-house. It owns the entire vertical
supply chain, allowing for seamless integration including the
production of semiconductors.
Its meteoric rise is further evidenced by the fact that it has
produced close on two million EVs in the past 12 months. This
undeniable success now puts it at the forefront in the
manufacture of new energy vehicles and its latest offering, the

Behind the wheel, the 4x4 version is well powered with plenty
of acceleration, smoothly delivered on demand; 62mph takes just
3.8 seconds from a standing start.
The version tested is fitted with a torque vectoring system
which makes for additional grip, giving added reassurance on the
UK’s less than well maintained road surfaces. Driving modes on
both models number four self-explanatory modes: ECO, normal,
sport and snow.
Range anxiety is considerably reduced by the 323 miles
available and a top-up time from 30% to 80% in just 26 minutes.
The comfortable interior is well put together with plenty of
legroom front and back. The driver is well catered for with a fourway
adjustable steering wheel, an eight-way adjustable seat and
a four-way power adjustable lumbar support.
The excellent voice command system is activated with a ‘Hey,
BYD’. One very cool interior feature is the rotating central
console which allows for the best view of the navigation map as
well as all the required controls.

So, what is
Valentine’s Day?
Active8 reader David Harris has been researching
some of the history and traditions relating to the
most romantic date of the year. Here he shares
the story with Active8:

ALENTINE’S Day this year is on
Wednesday, 14th February, and I
have already cleared a space on my
mantelpiece for the mountain of cards
I expect to receive! But, where does
the idea of a Valentine’s Day come
from - other than from greeting card
manufacturers?
There are a number of myths and stories
about a St Valentine, some of which need
to be taken with a large pinch of salt.
One account is that Valentine is thought
to have been a third Century Roman saint. At that time, Valentine
was a very common name, and quite a few people called Valentine
became priests. Some went on to be made saints by the Catholic
Church, and one Valentine was said to have actually been made
Pope! St Valentine was the patron saint of lovers, epileptics and
beekeepers!
Within the Roman Empire, Claudius wanted all young men to
become fighting soldiers - without any distractions! He decided
that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and
families. So, Emperor Claudius banned marriage for all young men,
in order that they could go and serve in the army unencumbered
by wives and children.
A priest called Valentine felt this was very unjust and so he defied
the Emperor and continued to marry young lovers in secret. When
this illegal practice was discovered, he was put to death.
It is then suggested that whilst he was awaiting his fate he
became very close to the jailer’s daughter who used to visit him in
prison.
This was said to be an entirely platonic relationship, but they had
long discussions together about life, and what was about to
happen to him. Just before his death, Valentine left a letter for this
young girl thanking her for her support whilst he was awaiting his
execution date, and signed it ‘from your Valentine,’ a phrase that is
still in use today.
As with all myths from many centuries ago, we need to treat the
stories about St Valentine with some care, not least because there
are so many of them!
Valentine was still listed as a ‘saint’ by the Catholic Church until
1969, when he was removed from the General Roman Calendar
because so little is known about him; and there were many
contradictory accounts of his life.
Valentine’s Day has been associated with romantic love for
centuries. In 18th Century England, it grew into an occasion when
couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers,
offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as
‘Valentines’).
Most churches today do not regard Valentine’s Day as a Christian
or a religious festival, although they recognise and celebrate the
importance of the love that can exist and grow between people.
This can be important in any setting and at any time.
Whatever our views about the history and current commercialism
of Valentine’s Day, we can still use this time to give thanks for the
love that we have known; and the love that we continue to
experience.
However you choose to mark it - have a happy Valentine’s Day!
