is gearing up for its 2024
Annual Mid-Winter Training
Conference, which begins on
Wednesday, January 24, at
the B Ocean Resort and Hotel
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Representing 250 African
American-owned newspapers
and media companies in the
United States, NNPA’s theme
for this year’s conference is
“Empowering in 2024: The
Black Press, The Black Vote,
and Black America.”
The four-day interchange
promises attendees valuable
insights into performancedriven
tools and methodologies
aimed at expanding and
monetizing their businesses.
Highlights include workshops,
presentations, and discussions
featuring prominent figures
from various fields.
NNPA Chairman Bobby
R. Henry Sr. affirmed, “As
the Chairman of our beloved
association, hosting the NNPA
members — the Black Press of
America — in Florida’s Boward
County in the city of Fort Lauderdale
is a true honor. In these challenging
times, the Black Press confronts
bigotry and hatred, understanding
the need for collective action. The
Westside Gazette and the NNPA,
through the NNPA’s National Town
Hall Meeting aims to reaffirm the
historic bond between Blacks and
Jews in America, rooted in the shared
struggle for civil rights and freedom.”
NNPA Chairman Henry emphasized,
“It’s a call to re-engage and strengthen
this significant relationship.
can see the decline of this world
has increased.
How did this happen?
One could attest to the
maybe it’s the lack of trust and
The Sentencing Project Unveils Final Report in
‘One in Five’ Series Reveals Mass Incarceration’s
Role in Deepening Inequality and Harming Public
Researchers found that employers discriminate against job candidates
who have criminal histories, especially against those who are Black.
The collateral consequences of a criminal conviction often amount to a lifelong disadvantage,
particularly for African Americans. According to the Sentencing Project, in 2010, one in three
(33%) African American adult men had a felony conviction on their record, compared to 13% of
all adult men.
Researchers found that employers discriminate against job candidates who have criminal
histories, especially against those who are Black. Further, application questions about criminal
histories deter some people from applying to certain jobs and colleges, with a 2017 study finding
that nearly half of unemployed men had a criminal conviction. Additionally, almost one-third
of all U.S. jobs require an occupational license, and many licensing boards bar or impose
cumbersome obstacles for people with criminal records.
Fee-based programs to seal criminal records also exacerbate racial disparities., and the
Sentencing Project noted that these policies stand in stark contrast to a growing evidence base
showing that post-incarceration employment prevents recidivism and that tackling heightened
labor market discrimination against Black people with criminal records would reduce recidivism
rates.
The Sentencing Project has again highlighted a critical element causing inequalities in
incarceration with “One in Five: How Mass Incarceration Deepens Inequality and Harms Public
Safety.” The report highlights laws and policies that worsen inequality and unfairly burden
communities of color. Initiated to provide an in-depth analysis of racial inequities within
America’s criminal legal system, the series of reports covers a spectrum of topics.
From the progress made in the 21st century in reducing the U.S. prison population to
disparities in crime and policing, the series also explores the key causes of racial and ethnic
disparities in imprisonment. Additionally, it highlights reforms that have played a pivotal role
in mitigating these sources of disparity.
“A primary driver of disparity within the U.S. criminal legal system is the multitude of
laws and policies that intensify economic and social inequalities, diverting public spending from
effective public safety investments,” stated Nazgol Ghandnoosh, Co-Director of Research with
The Sentencing Project and lead author of the report. Ghandnoosh emphasized the importance
of protecting and expanding promising reforms initiated by states and local jurisdictions
nationwide.
The report delves into various criminal legal laws and policies, including fines, fees, predatory
pricing, exploitative wages, collateral consequences, and the diversion of adequate investments
in public safety. The report proposes two key strategies to eliminate racial disparities in
incarceration, including addressing sources of inequality by limiting socioeconomic disadvantage
resulting from a criminal conviction and significantly increasing investments in effective public
safety programs.
The “One in Five” series concludes with a call to action, emphasizing the need for durable
investments in communities of color, a reduction in policing footprint, and ongoing efforts to
“Certain regulations intensify the marginalization of justice-involved people – who are
disproportionately people of color – by wearing down economic and social buffers against crime
and increasing the likelihood of police contact,” added Ghandnoosh.
The white teacher accused
of having pictures of nooses
labeled “back-to-school
necklaces” claims Black
colleagues and school officials
lambasted her “because of her
race” in a new lawsuit filed in
New York court.
According to documents
obtained by The Daily Beast,
48-year-old Nancy Jones
Doering identified herself as
one of the educators involved
in the incident that would
lead to national outrage
in February 2019 and an
investigation.
The racist picture, which
was part of a collage of
images, was spotted in an
unnamed teacher’s classroom
at Roosevelt Middle School in
Long Island, officials with the
school district confirmed at
the time.
The Roosevelt Union Free
School District said they
took “appropriate action”
against an “isolated group of
teachers” while not revealing
their names. Reporters
learned three teachers were
suspended and two without
tenure were later fired.
Documents claim Doering,
who’s a longtime social studies
teacher, didn’t create the
racially insensitive image and
found it in another teacher’s
classroom. The filing alleges
Doering removed the image
due to its offensive content
and kept it locked away in
a cabinet in her classroom.
She was later pulled into a
meeting and informed about
her suspension, the suit
reads.
The lawsuit states a
hearing officer exonerated
Doering of charges stemming
from the investigation in
October 2022. The court
ordered the school district to
reinstate her to her position,
but administrators allegedly
kept her from students while
her colleagues continued to
(Photo: Courtesy of Arthur Mackey)
harass her over the incident.
The filing noted that the
Roosevelt Free Union
School District “is primarily
composed of Black and
African American members,
while Claimant is White.”
Reporters said the school
district, the Roosevelt Board
of Education, and at least 10
other individuals are listed
as defendants in the lawsuit,
which accuses them of racial
discrimination, defamation,
inflicting emotional distress,
and other offenses.
The suit alleges they tried
to paint Doering as a “a racist
teacher in a community that
is mostly composed of Black/
African American members,”
destroyed her reputation, and
left her “living in constant
anxiety, stress and daily fear
to herself and her family.”
The Daily Beast reported
that the school district had
yet to file a formal response
to Doering’s complaint as of
“Of all the forms of
inequality, injustice in health
care is the most shocking and
inhumane because it often
results in physical death.” –
Martin Luther King, Jr.
In the 55 years since
the assassination of Martin
Luther King Jr., we are
still grappling with the
institutional and systemic
racism and oppression for
which he sacrificed his life.
It affects every aspect of life
for Black people, including
health care.
Black people have fought
health care disparities for
decades largely due to lack
of access to health care for
people of color.
Dr. Roderick King, chief
diversity, equity and inclusion
officer of the University of
Maryland Medical System
(UMMS), is a physician with
deep roots in advocacy for
health equity. His career
spans nearly three decades,
but his passion for health care
equity stemmed from what he
witnessed as a boy and young
man growing up in Brooklyn,
N.Y.
“My father cared for
underserved populations and
addressed issues of health
in equalities experienced by
his patients for nearly four
decades, so I’ve witnessed the
King believes one of the
reasons for the lack of progress
regarding inequities in health
of the problem.
“We don’t embrace the
complexity of understanding
that root causes will vary
from one area to another and
one community to another.
Scientists May Have Discovered
What Leads to Long COVID, Affecting
Numerous Black Patients
Researchers think they’ve
figured out why some people
develop long COVID after an
initial coronavirus infection.
Evidence from patients’
blood suggests that one part
of the human immune system
– called the complement
system – sometimes remains
active even after the body
has successfully fought off a
COVID infection.
Where Black Americans
are more likely to
report symptoms of long
COVID compared to their
white counterparts, this
could be an important
breakthrough.
“In patients with long
COVID, the complement
system no longer returns to
its basal (resting) state, but
remains activated and, thus,
also damages healthy body
cells,” senior researcher Onur
Boyman, a professor of
immunology at the University
of Zurich in Switzerland, said
in a university news release.
Long COVID is a syndrome
chief Development Officer,
Oncology at Pfizer, said in
a news release. “The FDA
acceptance of our sBLA for
review is important progress
toward continuing to offer
an option that can extend
the lives of more adults with
cervical cancer.”
The sBLA is supported
by efficacy and safety data
from the global, randomized,
Phase 3 innovaTV 301 trial
(NCT04697628), in which
TIVDAK demonstrated
superior overall survival
(OS), progression-free
survival (PFS) and confirmed
objective response rate
(ORR), as assessed by the
investigator, in patients with
previously treated recurrent
or metastatic cervical cancer
compared to chemotherapy.
According to a news
release, the safety profile of
TIVDAK in innovaTV 301
was consistent with its known
safety profile as presented
in the U.S. prescribing
information. In October 2023,
gotten over their infection.
The patient can experience
a wide variety of symptoms
that can last months or even
years, including fatigue,
shortness of breath, altered
sense of smell or taste, heart
palpitations, and “brain fog”
— confusion, forgetfulness
and a lack of focus and mental
clarity.
For this study, researchers
followed 113 COVID patients
for up to a year after their
initial infection. After six
months, 40 of them had
developed active long COVID.
How To Get Away
With Murder
By Lucius Gantt
I loved to watch Annalise (Viola Davis)
in her hit TV show “How To Get Away With
Murder”.
But Donald Trump’s Russian Babayka
version is un-American, ungodly, and
unacceptable to a majority of American
citizens!
It’s no secret the twice-impeached
President, who is facing nearly 100 criminal
charges in various courts in multiple states,
is seeking to stay out of prison by lying to voters, parroting
dictators and authoritarians and hoping to generate votes to
win the 2024 Presidential Election. If victorious, Trump will
continue to follow orders from foreign assets and political
leaders to divide Americans and destroy democracy.
If you vote for Donald Trump, he will enrich himself, shun
NATO and longtime military allies, and cozy up to Russia,
North Korea, and similar countries.
I can’t try to explain why bird brains and modern-day
House Negroes like Sen. Tim Scott will oppose Nikki Halley’s
bid to win the Republican nomination to give his support and
endorsement to someone that seems to hate people of color
around the world.
I’m no fan of Nikki, but if you don’t know; when she was
Governor of South Carolina, she appointed Scott to his U.S.
Senate seat.
Obviously, to me, Scott believes if he tells the truth about
the dangers of a second Trump presidency, Trump and Trump’s
nationalist and supremacist followers will demean and possibly
attack Scott and or his family.
OK, Trump has already signaled his desire to kill U.S.
constitutionality, the democratic governmental system, the
rule of law, and the so-called American way!
African Americans are the most “victimized” citizens in
the nation that is becoming too busy to love. Our brothers and
sisters run to the polls every year to vote for what is assumed to
be the lesser of two evils, but the 2024 election will be different.
A Trump victory in 2024 will be the worst of all evils!
Trump insisted in court filings that if he is elected, he
should be completely immune from any crimes he commits as
President.
A judge in one of Trump’s court cases asked if a reelected
President Trump could be charged if he ordered Seal Team 6
soldiers to murder his political opponents, and Trump’s lawyers
said “No”, ucnless he was impeached and convicted first.
In other words, Trump, as President, could kill anyone he
wanted to and resign before any impeachment, and thus get
away with murder!
Hmmm? I guess Presidential immunity would also allow
Trump to steal boxes of top-secret American documents and
give them to American enemies and adversaries.
He would also, I imagine, pardon coup plotters and
insurrectionists who will suppress votes and overturn free,
fair, and legitimate elections so he could remain President for
life!
As usual, Black voters will decide who becomes President in
2024. If Blacks vote against Trump, Trump will lose.
Don’t let Donald Trump get away with murder!
Frankly Speaking
By W. Frank Wilson
As the NFL season rapidly
comes to an end, new teams
and new players have surfaced.
The Philadelphia Falcons were
terrible against Tampa Bay and Dak
Ryan literally sucked on Sunday
against Green Bay.
We hold these truths that all
teams may not be created equal, but on game day 11 men and
a football is the one thing they have in common.
I will catch up on my Netflix movies, watch College football
replays and golf and engage in the annual meeting of the minds
with fellow prognosticators about what next fall will look like
in NCAA and NFL football
Yes, I will peek at USFL football and some NBA games and
in the summer I will be persuaded to give the Braves some of
my time knowing they will do their best imitation of a Pall
bearer and let me down.
Can’t wait until August when like I’ve done for almost
60 years, I will get excited about the FALCONS, Fort Valley
Wildcats and Albany State Rams!
Yes, I will be Deion watching and bear
witness to the coaching carrousel as will many.
I may have to provide therapy to my Dallas Cowboy friends
and help them shop for new gear to replace everything they
burned Sunday night.
Incredible winter plans but I already know I am likely to
be chanting yet again... just wait til next year once the football
season ends
Frankly Speaking, I am a Falcon fan!
Choose Respect in This Election Cycle
By Rivera Sun
As the primaries heat up and the
nation goes through the throes of
another election cycle, cast your vote for
something unexpected, something that
defies the lies of politicians, something
that could save our nation – and most
certainly our souls.
Make a choice to weather this election
year with respect and decency toward your fellow citizens, no
matter our political views.
In past years, our election cycles have been marked with
fear, distrust, polarization, heightened divisiveness, even
violence. In 2024, if we do one thing as citizens, let’s end this
toxic cycle.
Respect. Safety. Decency. These common values may or may
not be reflected on the ballot, but we’ll be making choices for
or against them this year. We’ll ‘vote’ for them through our
Lesson 101: Ignorance Of History &
Racism Will Destroy Democracy
“One who concedes integrity; mitigates their
power, and without either becomes a puppet!”
John Johnson II 01/24/23 - SCOTUS, Beware!
By John Johnson II
Avoiding the lessons of history is one of the
surest ways to repeat the mistakes of once
great, yet fallen, empires. These history
lessons, ever so plainly, provide incredible
information as to the reasons for the
perilous fate of these empires. Simply put,
these lessons are like a restaurant’s menu
containing foods to avoid if you don’t want
to suffer a perilous fate. Consequently,
governing with a blind eye to history,
America’s former president Trump and the
Republican Confederacy are attempting to destroy democracy
one institution at a time.
A cursory review of current events also reveals that a Nation
declines when its people become preoccupied with lesser tasks
and grow silent. Had abolitionists grew silent slavery may not
have ended in 1865; and had Dr. King grew silent we wouldn’t
have gained passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Had
George Floyd died without crying out for his mama, America
may have remained silent.
Republican congresspersons aren’t only silent about Trump’s
unfitness, they’re enthralled with his braggadocious stupidity.
Unbelievably, they’re loudly endorsing him for president even
though he appears in mental and physical decline. There isn’t
an NFL owner who would hire a Head Coach in physical or
mental decline. Would airlines hire a pilot in mental or physical
decline? Hopefully, not!
Using a vignette approach to expose the Republicans’
Confederacy plot provides an opportunity for readers to
examine the correlation between the causes of past fallen
empires with Republican’s attempts at destroying America’s
democracy. To determine the extent to which a correlation
exists, it’s important to note that historians cite the following
as causes for seven empires collapsing during the 20 th century:
1. Political Issues, corruptions, and ineffective governance;
2.Social unrest, ethnic and nationalist tensions and cultural
issues, and failure to adapt to internal strife;
3. Economic issues such as inflation, debt, unequal distribution
of wealth, maintaining large military forces, wars; and
4. Environmental/climate control issues. Toxic air, water, food,
and soil pollutants.
The Democratic Legislative
Campaign Committee Must
Keep Winning
By Roger Caldwell
The Democrats are having a hot streak
with the Democratic Legislative Campaign
Committee (DLCC) with a win from Florida
Democrat candidate Tom Keen. This secured
the first state legislative flip of the year
and beat the odds that we could win. The
Democrats are excited with this win on a
local/state level, and this is the mission of the
DLCC.
“In the 2022 midterm elections, the DLCC
won four new state legislatives majorities while not losing a
single previously-held chamber. In 2023 special elections
leading up to Election Day, DLCC candidates over-performed
2020 margins in their districts by an average of over seven
points. And in the 2023 November elections, the DLCC won
every race we competed in,” says Communications Director
Abhi Rahman.
The mission of this committee is to elect local Democrats to
statehouses across America, and help rebuild the Democratic
Party. The DLCC gives our candidates resources, field support,
and the data they need to run smart, winning campaigns.
The DLCC is classified by the IRS as a 527 political
organization, and files IRS forms 8871 and 8872, and does not
file with the Federal Election Commission. It was founded in
1994, and the DLCC oversees campaigns in all 50 states with
the aim of helping to elect Democrats to legislative offices. It
is overseen by a board, which is composed of Democratic state
legislators.
The new DLCC President Heather Williams says, “The
DLCC is taking advantage of every opportunity this year to
Tips for Love and Finance in 2024
By Teri Williams, president of OneUnited Bank
The new year brings new beginnings,
which is a great time to focus on love
and finances. Whether it’s self-love,
romantic love or the love of our children,
love has an impact on our money. Better
to be intentional about the mixture of
the two, rather than put our head in the
sand and pretend as though they are
completely separate. In fact, if our love
and finances are not aligned, it could be
disastrous! In 2024, here are some tips
on how to have a more successful year:
Self-Love and Finances
There are many psychological studies
about the importance of loving yourself. Self-love is needed to
achieve true happiness. With all the divisiveness happening
in 2024, self-love is even more important. However, self-love
and particularly self-care can also impact your wallet. Some
questions to ask yourself.
1. Do you pay yourself first? Whether you have a job or are
self-employed, do you put aside money in an emergency savings
account, retirement account or even a vacation savings account
Founding
Principles
at Risk as
Religious Right
Continues Its
Takeover of
the Republican
Party
By Bob Topper
The success
achieved
by
our representative
democracy
is remarkable,
but that
achievement is in jeopardy.
The Republican party, once
the champion of our founding
principles, liberty, equality,
and democracy, has become
a religious body incapable of
rational debate and compromise.
Conservative Republican
leader Barry Goldwater,
whom I voted for, first warned
of this conversion in 1994
when he said:
“Mark my word, if and when
these preachers get control of
the [Republican] party, and
they're sure trying to do so,
it's going to be a terrible damn
problem. Frankly, these people
frighten me. Politics and governing
demand compromise.
But these Christians believe
they are acting in the name of
God, so they can't and won't
compromise.”
Religion has always been at
odds with the founding principles,
for religions usually
deny liberty, equality, and
democracy. Religions are
We’re Still
Moving
‘Beyond
Vietnam’
By Robert C. Koehler
“ A n d
some of us
who have
already
begun to
break the
silence of the
night have
found that
the calling
to speak is often a vocation of
agony, but we must speak.”
Take a day, pore over a
few of his words. I’m talking
about Martin Luther King, of
course. His “day” is over, but
his message still pulsates. We
must speak!
The world is bleeding
with the wounds of war and
poverty and racism, just as
it was 57 years ago, when
he spoke — infamously, you
might say — at Riverside
Church in New York City.
He defied LBJ and stared
directly into the muzzle of the
Vietnam war, declaring it to
be moral savagery, declaring
the United States to be “the
greatest purveyor of violence
in the world today.”
We’ve given King a national
holiday, made him a national
hero — but that’s not the
same thing as listening to
him. It may be the opposite.
Deifying him, turning him
into a statue, revering his
image, could amount to
simply shutting him up.
So I devoted a few hours
of his national holiday
(actually, the day after) to
rereading “Beyond Vietnam,”
the speech he gave on April 4,
1967, a year to the day before
his assassination. His words
aren’t merely critical of the
cruelly pointless colonial war,
or of the irony of the American
BEATRICE DIXON’S ‘HONEY POT COMPANY’
SELLS MAJORITY STAKE TO CODI FOR $380M
By BOTWC Staff
(Source BOTWC Staff):
They’re ushering in a new
era of growth in the natural
period care space.
Compass Diversified
(CODI), a publicly traded
holding company, has
acquired a majority stake
in The Honey Pot Company
for $380 million, Beauty
Independent reports. The
acquisition is seen as a
significant win for The Honey
Pot’s owner, Beatrice Dixon.
CODI specializes in niche
middle-market businesses
and aims to expand The
Honey Pot’s presence in the
natural period care space.
The deal involves CODI
paying $380 million for the
majority stake, and The Honey
Pot’s existing leadership team
will stay in place, retaining a
significant minority stake.
Despite a muted reaction
from shareholders, the
acquisition is a milestone
for the Black-owned brand
and the period care space,
challenging dominant brands
like Kotex, Playtex, Always,
and Tampax. The brand
has been vocal about degendering
the period care
space and developing better,
safer products for the Black
community.
The Honey Pot, founded
in 2012, has been a pioneer
in natural period care,
creating products with plantbased
ingredients. The
brand’s annual sales are
estimated at $120 million, and
it has expanded its offerings
to over 60 storekeeping units
beyond pads and tampons.
The brand reassured its
audience on Instagram,
emphasizing that the
quality of formulas will not
change, and it will continue
to impact wellness journeys
with science, education, and
innovative products. Dixon
is committed to maintaining
trust and transparency,
acknowledging the history
of vaginal care and Blackfounded
brands, and leading
with empathy in addressing
concerns.
By “Nunnie” Robinson, Westside Gazette Sports Editor
At a recent worship experience
at Mt. Hermon AME,
Fort Lauderdale, I was captivated
by a young man with whom I was
unfamiliar. What captured my
attention was this young man’s
aura, his physical presence and
demeanor. As a former football
coach, I find myself constantly
profiling those that I perceive as
being or having been an athlete
in the past. I even mentally
assess their physical attributes
such as height, weight, strength
and speed while imagining
the sport and/or position he
or she played. So it was on
this fortuitous Sunday at Mt.
Hermon AME Fort Lauderdale
where I observed this young with
a body like Terry Crews of AGT/
Everybody Loves Raymond
Quyis Dudley and David
fame reading scripture and
Bradwell
leading the youth choir as a soloist. I thought to myself what
an amazing, admirable young man. Because our youth were
leading the service that Sunday, I had been politely asked to
change my seating to accommodate the youth on program.
Curiosity got the best of me so when he came down from the
choir stand and sat across from me, I beckoned him over to sit
next to me. I could see that he was a little taken aback, but he
obediently acquiesced. Having to get right to point because we
were in the middle of service, I introduced myself as a steward,
former educator and football coach presently serving as the
sports editor of the Westside Gazette. I intimated how much
I admired his participation as a youth and leader in Church
School activities, then queried him about his athletic prowess.
His name is Quyis Dudley, a student-athlete at Dillard High
School and that he did indeed play football.
I told him that I would love to do a feature story about him,
that I knew his coach very well and that I would contact them
both later. Just my initial impression and encounter suggested
to me that young people like him doing the right thing, setting
positive examples for those who might choose to emulate him,
and demonstrating his Christian values, deserve our support
and recognition.
In a recent Bible study session about evangelism, I
mentioned my encounter with Quyis to Mt. Hermon Senior
Pastor, Rev. Henry E. Green III, who immediately responded
with tremendous praise about Quyis and his consistent
participation in our church’s YPD.
I’m looking forward to interviewing Quyis in the immediate
future and learning more about him personally and influencers
that have shaped his life up to presence.
Rev. Shartpon Statement cont’d from Page 8
(NAN), issued the following statement on the passing of Dexter
King, the second son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“I was heartbroken to hear that Dexter King left us this
morning, but I was comforted by the knowledge he is reunited
with his parents and sister. Dexter was only seven when his
hero, his role model, and, most importantly, his father was
taken from us. He turned that pain into activism, however, and
dedicated his life to advancing the dream Martin and Coretta
Scott King had for their children, their grandchildren, and all
the generations to come after. My love and prayers are with my
brother, Martin III, Arndrea, Yolanda, and Bernice. We mourn
with them for the loss of their brother – our brother – who left
us far too soon.”
Persistent Lending Disparities Perpetuate Nation’s Racial Wealth Gap:
Black neighborhoods and shopping districts stripped of $406 billion
By Charlene Crowell
For America, Black History Month brings
opportunities to revisit our nation’s lessons,
achievements, and unfulfilled promises, capturing
our attention as well as our hopes. Yet nothing hits
home harder than the painful reminders of how
so much of Black America continues to struggle
financially, despite an economy that reports low
unemployment, a robust stock market, and low
inflation.
Whether discussing kitchen table economics,
or yesteryear’s grievances, money – or the lack
thereof – is an ongoing and dominant concern.
Now is a good time to examine the policies and
practices contributing to why Black wealth
remains so elusive for people whose work ethic is
often far larger than their paychecks.
The Federal Reserve’s recently updated
Survey of Consumer Finance 2019-2022, analyzes
post-pandemic trends – particularly as they affect
racial wealth gaps.
In 2022, Asian-Americans had a typical
family wealth of $536,000, the highest of any
race or ethnicity, and nearly twice the typical
white family’s wealth of $285,000. But these sixfigure
wealth assets did not include either Black
or Latino households. Instead, a typical Latino
family held only about 20 percent of the wealth
of the typical white family (about $61,600), and
Black family wealth was even lower at $44,900,
only 15 percent of the wealth held by white
families.
“Despite strong growth in wealth for nonwhite
families over the past two surveys, we
remain far from racial equality, reflecting the
large differences in wealth that have persisted
for decades,” states the report. “Taking a slightly
longer-run view, since the Great Recession
the typical Black and Hispanic family has had
between about $10 to $15 of wealth for every
$100 held by the typical White family,” the report
continues. “This ratio has closed only modestly
in the past two surveys. The typical Black family
went from having about $9 in wealth for every
$100 held by the typical white family in 2013 to
around $16 in 2022; the typical Hispanic family
went from having about $10 in wealth for every
$100 held by the typical white family in 2013 to
Miami Native Becomes
Member of Elite Navy Honor
By Ashley Craig, Navy
Office of Community
Outreach
MILLINGTON, TENN.
- A Miami native recently
completed an intensive 10-
week training program to
become a member of the elite
U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard.
Seaman Rian Young, a
2023 American Heritage High
School graduate, joined the
Navy six months ago. Today,
Young serves as a U.S. Navy
Ceremonial Guardsman.
“I joined the Navy to
support my family,” said
Young.
Established in 1931,
the U.S. Navy Ceremonial
Guard is the official honor
guard of the U.S. Navy and
is based at Naval District
Washington Anacostia Annex
in Washington, D.C.
According to Navy officials,
the U.S. Navy Ceremonial
Guard’s primary mission is
to represent the service in
Presidential, Joint Armed
Forces, Navy, and public
ceremonies in and around the
nation’s capital. Members of
the Navy Ceremonial Guard
participate in some of our
nation’s most prestigious
ceremonies, including
Presidential inaugurations
and arrival ceremonies for
foreign officials.
“Serving in the Navy
has taught me that honesty
is always important,” said
Young.
Sailors of the Ceremonial
Guard are hand selected while
they are attending boot camp
at Recruit Training Command
in Great Lakes, Illinois. Strict
military order and discipline,
around $22 in 2022.”
Recently the Brookings Institution
independently analyzed the Fed’s data
in a new publication entitled, Black
wealth is increasing, but so is the
racial gap, citing the effects of public
policies against Black participation in
proven wealth-building assets.
“Policies that privilege whiteness
are reflected in higher levels of wealth
for the average white family, which
can be leveraged across generations
to generate greater wealth and
advantages,” wrote Brookings. “This
became very clear during the pandemic:
Black households made major gains
through housing and business equity,
yet that growth paled in comparison
to white households’ gains from
investment returns.”
For example, Brookings
found that in 2020 Black businesses
employed 1.3 million people and
created over 48,000 new jobs. If access
to capital could be available to more
entrepreneurs to begin new businesses,
or expand existing ones, greater Black
wealth likely would result.
In a separate but related analysis,
Brookings examined how redlining of
Black business districts suppressed
wealth-building, similarly to how
lowered appraisal values of Black
homes suppress wealth-building in
majority-Black neighborhoods.
“Our research found that
storefronts and shopping centers in
communities with higher shares of
Black residents are valued measurably
lower than otherwise comparable
properties in communities with fewer
Black residents”, wrote Brookings
last November in Building Black
wealth through community real
estate ownership. “We estimate that
the undervaluation of majority-Black
ZIP codes results in aggregate wealth
losses of $171 billion in retail space
for the owners of these properties...
By comparison, owner-occupiers of
housing lose an estimated $235 billion
in majority-Black ZIP codes.”
Imagine what Black wealth could be
derived if these billion-dollar discounts
were removed from Black and Latino
communities. Until or unless public
policy reforms effectively address these
historic inequities, racial wealth gaps
UPDATED: Democrats Allocate $35 Million for Outreach But Overlook Black Press in Bid for Diverse
Voter Support from Front Page
By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Senior
National Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia
In what the Party is calling a bid to secure
control of the U.S. House in the upcoming
November elections, the Democratic
Congressional Campaign Committee
(DCCC) has announced a $35 million
investment in a comprehensive outreach
initiative targeting Latino, Black, Asian
American, Pacific Islander, and Native
Hawaiian voters. “Power the People” aims
to persuade, organize, welcome, educate,
and reach voters from diverse ethnic
combined with teamwork,
allow the Ceremonial Guard
to fulfill their responsibilities
with pride and determination.
They are experts in the art of
close order drill, coordination
and timing.
The Ceremonial Guard is
comprised of the drill team,
color guard, casket bearers
and firing party.
“What I like best about
serving with the Ceremonial
Guard is that I get to uphold a
standard that less than 1% of
people in the Navy get to do,”
said Young.
There are many
opportunities for sailors to
earn recognition in their
command, community and
careers.
“I am most proud of
getting out of training and
working my way to the top,”
said Young.
As Young and other sailors
continue to perform missions,
they take pride in serving
their country in the United
States Navy.
“For me, serving in the
Navy means honor, courage
and commitment,” added
Young.
backgrounds.
Despite the significant allocation, a notable
omission from the Democratic strategy is the
exclusion of the Black Press of America, a
move that continues to raise eyebrows given
the pressing need to engage African American
voters effectively. The Democratic Party,
including the DCCC, the Democratic National
Committee, and the Biden-Harris re-election
campaign, has thus far ignored criticism for
overlooking the influential Black Press.
While the DCCC revealed that 2024
spending surpassed the $30 million expended
on these voter groups in the 2022 midterm
elections, concerns persist over excluding the
Black Press from this financial commitment.
Critics argue that the omission is particularly
striking during what is widely acknowledged
as modern history’s most crucial and
transformative election.
During Biden’s 2020 campaign, he turned
to the Black Press when it appeared that
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and even
New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s
campaigns were gaining steam. In fact, before
arriving in South Carolina, Sanders who had
just romped in Nevada, held 45 delegates while
Texas Democrat Pete Buttigieg was second
with 26, and Biden had claimed just 15.
In Charleston, Biden met with a
conglomerate of publishers from the National
Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA),
the trade association of America’s 250 Blackowned
newspapers and media companies.
A broadcast interview led by NNPA
President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr.
was followed by a national news article about
the sit-down that all went viral. And, after the
endorsement of South Carolina Rep. James
Clyburn, Biden solidified the vital Black vote
people marched, bled and in some cases even died to
have this intervention in a state where “woke goes to
inclusion says a lot about how serious this dialog is needed.
What’s really happening?
I think all of us need to reaffirm relationships that
carried us through trouble times. How soon we forget on
both sides. As we move forward through this year, let’s
take stock in human life and not allow cultural wars,
fascist government leaders or family battles to tear this
country and the world apart.
Where is the love of God in all of this, and I’m not
talking about some evangelical racist ideology to what the
love of God really is.?
We can do it, if it was done before, remembering there
is nothing new under the sun.
Alternatively, a benchmark
fee could be implemented
across all affected financial
institutions, with proposed
figures of $3, $6, $7,
public input and industry
feedback will determine the
final fee structure.
Overdraft fees have
long been contentious, with
research indicating that the
average fee is $26.61. The
CFPB and public records
from banks reveal that
major banks still generate
approximately $8 billion
in overdraft fees annually.
Experts reported that
the burden of these fees
low-income households and
communities of color.
Carolina and headed south
with hopes of finding freedom
in Spanish occupied Florida.
After enduring unimaginable
challenges and conditions,
they made their way through
the swamps eluding slave
catchers and arrived in St
Augustine, Florida. Word
spread to plantations all over
the south, leading to more
and more slaves escaping
and establishing the first
McGuire, who at the time
had decades of experience in
prevention education.
Clinical pharmacist Bill
Lynch and licensed mental
health counselor Brittany
Payne Bruce share McGuire’s
unease about the increasing
issue of youth struggling
with marijuana and other
substances. Payne Bruce
believes the reasons behind
adolescent marijuana use
include fitting in, coping with
insecurities, and managing
school-related pressures.
McGuire’s son is doing
well now, and she, as well as
Lynch and Payne Bruce, are
all committed to educating
teens and parents about the
risks of early marijuana use.
So, what can parents do
By Brianca Spence, CLC, CCHW
about 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with
prostate cancer during their lifetime. But each
man’s risk of prostate cancer varies based on
age, race or ethnicity, and other factors.
African American men are more likely
to get prostate cancer than other races and
ethnicities and are more than twice as likely
to die from it than other men. In 2020, out of
every 100,000 white men, 95 were diagnosed
with a new case of prostate cancer, while out
of 100,000 Black (non-
Hispanic) men, 154 were
diagnosed, according to
the U.S. Cancer Statistics
Working Group.
For Dr. John Stewart,
chief of surgery for
Morehouse School of
Medicine at Grady
Health System, raising
awareness about prostate
cancer is paramount to
improving outcomes.
“We’ve got to make sure to get the word
out about prostate cancer screenings,” Stewart
said. “As Black men, we aren’t exactly fond of
interactions with the medical system. We see
it in prostate cancer, we see it in colonoscopy
screenings. We have to create a better agenda
for men’s health in our community.”
It’s not clear what makes Black men more
likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer,
but they also account for a high proportion of
advanced cases of the disease, regardless of
age, Stewart said.
While 62 is relatively young to most, it is
not an unusual age for patients to die from the
disease, Stewart said. Also, many people are
diagnosed in their 50s or 60s, but may live 10
to 15 years after a diagnosis.
Dr. Wayne Harris, an associate professor
in Emory School of Medicine’s department of
hematology and medical oncology, said that
prostate cancer tends to be a disease of older
men, but this isn’t always true for Black men.
“In the African American community, it
January 23rd is Maternal Health Awareness
Day. The day is dedicated to raising awareness of
the maternal health crisis in the United States.
Unfortunately, many patients in the United States
are unable to access maternal healthcare due to
various financial, staffing, and policy challenges.
As a result, hospitals in both rural and urban areas
are closing their labor and delivery units, making it
difficult for patients to receive the care they need.
To address this issue, I am organizing a series
of maternal health support groups titled “Mom’s In
The Muck” (#MITK). These groups aim to educate,
empower, and support women in rural areas to
reduce maternal and infant mortality, improve
birthing outcomes, and foster community. Our
first session, which focuses on Mental Health and
Perinatal Mood Disorders, will be held on February
21st at BRIDGES at Belle Glade. We welcome your
support and ask you to share and post this flyer,
register for the group via Zoom, or attend in person!
Those who attend in person will receive special gifts
along with refreshments.
It’s time to take back our voices and educate
ourselves not only on our rights as citizens of the
stress-coping methods.
McGuire also encourages
parents to seek resources and
professional help if their child
develops a substance-use
disorder.
“If you feel that your child
has developed a substanceuse
disorder where they feel
they can’t go without the
substance, get help,” she
said. “Stay educated on what
is going on out there. Stay
informed. Just be vigilant.”
Prostate cancer risk greatest in African American
men from Front Page
[prostate cancer] is known to have an earlier
onset and have a more aggressive profile for
reasons that are not fully clear,” Harris said.
“There’s this broad spectrum of contributing
factors, but not one specific thing that says
this is why there are disparities.”
For detecting prostate cancer, the prostatespecific
antigen (PSA) blood test is used,
but the ACS notes it’s not a perfect test for
finding prostate cancer early. It misses some
cancers, and sometimes it
finds cancers that are so
slow-growing they would
probably never need to be
treated.
The American Cancer
Society recommends
Black men ask about PSA
screenings at 45. This
recommendation is five
years earlier than other
groups.
Harris noted contrasting recommendations
by different organizations regarding the PSA
screening, stating, “The consensus is that
there should be an individualized discussion
with the patient’s physician,” for every case to
ensure age-appropriate health screenings are
conducted. Along with PSA screenings, digital
rectal exams can detect prostate cancer, rectal
cancer and other abnormalities.
While some risk factors for the cancer
can’t be controlled, Harris said that avoiding
smoking, using alcohol in excess, a high fat
diet and other lifestyle factors are beneficial
for not only prostate, but many different types
of cancer.
Morehouse’s Stewart said the sad news of
King’s death marks a moment for the Black
community. “This is an opportunity to continue
to educate our community and let people know
that prostate cancer is not a respecter of social
status. It’s not a respecter of position,” Stewart
said. “It is a real issue that we have to address
head on.”
Florida Bill Seeks to Eliminate Effective, Helpful Police Oversight
nationwide for the past 75
years, often in response
to civil rights violations,
Department of Justice
investigations, consent
decrees, or public demand.
Our communities and
institutions must uphold
the truth and stand firm,
especially when faced with
opposition to our democracy.
Here in South Florida,
we have had a mixed bag
of all the above. But what
has remained constant is
the overall approach of
civilian oversight to help
empower communities to
participate in how they are
policed and operate in a
way that empowers public
safety to lower crime and
evolve law enforcement.
Now, the simple beauty of
what has taken nearly a
century to build is being
threatened based on
political misunderstandings,
falsehoods, and fallacies in
the State of Florida.
House Bill 601 and
Senate Bill 576 are both
being passed through the
legislature by Republican
lawmakers who argue
that Civilian Oversight
of Law enforcement acts
as a harbor for anti-police
sentiment, radical ideology,
and a dismantling of
police departments. This
sentiment is far from the
truth. The truth, that
many law enforcement
leaders have found police
oversight to be helpful in
their momentous task, is
well documented. These
civilian oversight agencies
are unbiased, which helps
them unite stakeholders to
work together and improve
policing for the communities
they serve. Because of
this, elected officials
throughout the country are
increasingly establishing
robust, independent civilian
oversight, in recognition of
its ability to promote public
trust in law enforcement
and reduce exposure to
misconduct risks.
If enacted, House Bill 601
and its counterpart Senate
Bill 576 have the potential
to undermine a community’s
ability to influence policing
culture and training in
an effective, fair, and
transparent manner,
thereby, harming policecommunity
relations and
negatively impacting public
safety broadly. Civilian
oversight mechanisms
have existed in Florida
for decades, with both the
Miami Civilian Investigative
Panel and St. Petersburg’s
Civilian Complaint Review
Committee in continuous
operation for more than
20 years. As in many
jurisdictions across the
United States, these cities
have used civilian oversight
the country are increasingly
Bills in tandem show a lack
of understanding of the basic
tenets of civilian oversight.
Attacking Civilian
Oversight of Law
enforcement is not an
isolated incident. This
session, the legislature has
put forth numerous bills
that look to erode your
civil and human rights.
This determined effort is
in large part due to culture
