Let us praise the most auspicious bride of<br />

TIMOTHY (4:9-15)<br />

Timothy, my son, the saying is sure and<br />

worthy of full acceptance. For to this end<br />

we toil and suffer reproach, because we<br />

have our hope set on the living God, who is<br />

the Savior of all men, especially of those<br />

who believe. Command and teach these<br />

things. Let no one despise your youth, but<br />

set the believers an example in speech and<br />

conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I<br />

come, attend to the public reading of scripture,<br />

to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect<br />

the gift you have, which was given<br />

you by prophetic utterance when the council<br />

of elders laid their hands upon you.<br />

Practice these duties, devote yourself to<br />

them, so that all may see your progress.<br />

LUKE (19:1-10)<br />

At that time, Jesus was passing through Jericho. And there was a<br />

man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he<br />

sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the<br />

crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and<br />

climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass<br />

that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and<br />

said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must<br />

stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully.<br />

And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a<br />

sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I<br />

give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And<br />

Fr. Anthony’s Thoughts about the Sunday Gospel<br />

Zacchaeus<br />

St. Luke 19 (1-10)<br />

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ<br />

Today we read the Gospel passage that tells us about a person<br />

that on one hand was very disrespected and on the other hand he was praised by God.<br />

It is in stories like this that we learn that the way we judge things and the way God<br />

judges them are two different things.<br />

What is good and right for us is not always good and right for God. It is no surprise<br />

that when children were brought to Christ for blessing, even his own disciples<br />

turned them away and were very harsh towards the parents. Jesus however corrected<br />

them and said that even his disciples needed to become like children in order to enter<br />

the kingdom of God.<br />

Today we see the same thing on the example of Zacchaeus. Just because he was<br />

a tax collector he had a very bad reputation and people blocked him from seeing Jesus.<br />

They probably thought he does not deserve or he is not worthy to draw near. That is<br />

sometimes what we think about communion. Sometimes we are not sure if we are worthy<br />

to receive it or sometimes we even think of others not being worthy to receive<br />

Christ.<br />

As bad as Zacchaeus was in the eyes of the crowd, he was a son of Abraham in<br />

the eyes of God. Christ not only allowed him to come close, but he entered the house<br />

of Zacchaeus and praised him. Dear brothers and sisters this is why Christ says do not<br />

judge because he is the only one who knows the hearts of the people; we only can see<br />

the surface. We also are very harsh in our judgments and Christ is all merciful. Now<br />

and forever and to the ages of ages Amen.<br />

Οι σκέψεις του π. Αντωνίου για το Ευαγγέλιο της Κυριακής<br />

Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,<br />

Σήμερα διαβάζουμε το απόσπασμα του Ευαγγελίου που μας<br />

λέει για ένα άτομο που από τη μια πλευρά δεν ήταν σεβαστός,<br />

και από την άλλη, τον επαίνεσε ο Θεός. Σε ιστορίες όπως αυτή,<br />

μαθαίνουμε ότι ο τρόπος που κρίνουμε τα πράγματα, και ο<br />

τρόπος με τον οποίο ο Θεός τα κρίνει, είναι δύο διαφορετικά πράγματα.<br />

Αυτό που είναι καλό και σωστό για μας δεν είναι πάντα καλό και σωστό για τον<br />

Θεό.Δεν αποτελεί έκπληξη το γεγονός ότι όταν τα παιδιά μεταφέρθηκαν στον Χριστό για<br />

ευλογία, οι ίδιοι οι μαθητές Του τα απομάκρυναν, και ήταν πολύ σκληροί προς τους<br />

γονείς τους. Ο Ιησούς όμως τους διόρθωσε λέγοντας ότι ακόμη και οι μαθητές Του<br />

έπρεπε να γίνουν σαν παιδιά για να μπουν στη βασιλεία του Θεού.<br />

Σήμερα βλέπουμε το ίδιο πράγμα στο παράδειγμα του Ζακχαίου. Ακριβώς επειδή<br />

ήταν εφοριακός, είχε πολύ κακή φήμη, και οι άνθρωποι τον εμπόδιζαν να δει τον Ιησού.<br />

Πιθανόν πίστευαν ότι δεν αξίζει ή δεν είναι άξιος να Τον πλησιάσει. Αυτό είναι μερικές<br />

φορές που σκεφτόμαστε για την Θεία Κοινωνία. Μερικές φορές δεν είμαστε σίγουροι αν<br />

είμαστε άξιοι να Την λάβουμε, ή μερικές φορές σκεφτόμαστε ακόμη για άλλους ότι δεν<br />

αξίζουν να λάβουν τον Χριστό.<br />

Όσο κακός ήταν ο Ζακχαίος στα μάτια του πλήθους, ήταν γιος του Αβραάμ στα<br />

μάτια του Θεού. Ο Χριστός όχι μόνο του επέτρεψε να έρθει κοντά, αλλά εισήλθε στο<br />

σπίτι του Ζακχαίου και τον επαίνεσε. Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές γι' αυτό λέει ο<br />

Χριστός μην κρίνετε γιατί είναι ο μόνος που γνωρίζει τις καρδιές των ανθρώπων.<br />

Μπορούμε να δούμε μόνο την επιφάνεια. Είμαστε επίσης πολύ σκληροί στην κρίση μας<br />

και ο Χριστός είναι όλος ελεήμων. Τώρα και για πάντα και στους αιώνες των αιώνων<br />

Αμήν.<br />

HOUSE BLESSING<br />

Dear Parishioners,<br />

We have started a new year and I pray that God blesses us all in this New Year<br />

abundantly. I pray your family and friends are healthy. This year I have committed to visiting<br />

as many of our community members as possible.<br />

As you know, every year we celebrate house blessings beginning around Theophany,<br />

the Feast of Christ's baptism. It is important that we bless the things that we<br />

use. At this time of the year not only do we bless our homes, but also our vehicles and<br />

our pets but most importantly the church has many ways of blessing us and our children.<br />

A house blessing is also a great way of strengthening our relationship with the<br />

community. Please fill out the enclosed card and let me know when you would like me to<br />

bless your home and family.<br />

Please note that all you have to provide is a bowl of water, an Icon of Christ<br />

or a Patron Saint, a candle, and a few branches of basil with which we will sprinkle<br />

the house with the holy water.<br />

Ξεκινήσαμε μια νέα χρονιά και προσεύχομαι ο Θεός να μας ευλογεί άφθονα<br />

όλους αυτή τη νέα χρονιά. Εύχομαι η οικογένεια και οι φίλοι σας να είναι υγιείς. Φέτος<br />

έχω δεσμευτεί να επισκεφτώ όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερα μέλη της κοινότητάς μας.<br />

Όπως γνωρίζετε, κάθε χρόνο ευλογούμε τα σπίτια μας ξεκινώντας γύρω στα<br />

Θεοφάνεια, την εορτή της βάπτισης του Χριστού. Είναι σημαντικό να ευλογούμε τα<br />

πράγματα που χρησιμοποιούμε. Αυτή την εποχή του χρόνου όχι μόνο ευλογούμε τα<br />

σπίτια μας, αλλά και τα οχήματά μας και τα κατοικίδιά μας. Αλλά το πιο σημαντικό είναι<br />

ότι η εκκλησία έχει πολλούς τρόπους να ευλογεί εμάς και τα παιδιά μας.<br />

Η ευλογία του σπιτιού είναι επίσης ένας πολύ καλός τρόπος για να ενισχύσουμε<br />

τη σχέση μας με την κοινότητα. Παρακαλώ συμπληρώστε την συνημμένη κάρτα και<br />

Isaac the Syrian, Bishop of Ninevah<br />

Saint Isaac the Syrian, Bishop of Ninevah, lived during the sixth century. He and<br />

his brother entered the monastery of Mar Matthew near Ninevah and received the<br />

monastic tonsure. His learning, virtue, and ascetic manner of life attracted the notice<br />

of the brethren, and they proposed that he head the monastery. Saint Issac did<br />

not want this burden, preferring a life of silence, so he left the monastery to live<br />

alone in the desert.<br />

His brother urged him more than once to return to the monastery, but he would not<br />

agree. However, when the fame of Saint Isaac’s holy life had spread, he was made<br />

Bishop of Ninevah. Seeing the crude manners and disobedience of the inhabitants of the city, the<br />

saint felt that it was beyond his ability to guide them, and moreover, he yearned for solitude.<br />

Once, two Christians came to him, asking him to settle a dispute. One man acknowledged that<br />

he owed money to the other, but asked for a short extension. The lender threatened to bring his<br />

debtor to court to force him to pay. Saint Isaac, citing the Gospel, asked him to be merciful and<br />

give the debtor more time to pay. The man said, “Leave your Gospel out of this!” Saint Isaac replied,<br />

“If you will not submit to Lord’s commandments in the Gospel, then what remains for me to<br />

do here?” After only five months as bishop, Saint Isaac resigned his office and went into the<br />

mountains to live with the hermits. Later, he went to the monastery of Rabban Shabur, where he<br />

lived until his death, attaining a high degree of spiritual perfection.<br />

From the early eighth century until the beginning of the eighteenth century, nothing was<br />

known about Saint Isaac of Syria in Europe except for his name and works. Only in 1719 was a<br />

biography of the saint published at Rome, compiled by an anonymous Arab author. In 1896, more<br />

information on Saint Isaac came to light. The learned French soteriologist Abbot Chabot published<br />

some eighth century works on Syrian history by Iezudena, bishop of Barsa, where the account of<br />
