sponsors The Priceless Education SupplementPlanning AheadWe hear about how Parkside Schoolempowers the next generation of leadersIf one was to ask a Parkside pupil about Leadership,they could give you an abundance of situationalevidence and skills that are used on a daily basiswithin the fantastically authentic oak panelled walls ofthe 18th century Manor classrooms. Their inquisitivenature and forward-thinking mindset showcase a newgeneration of leaders, movers, and shakers.Central to this ethos are pupil committees, each onea testament to the democratic process that appointsmembers who actively participate in the decision-making,outcomes and implementation of changes in the school.The School Council oversees general recommendationsmade by pupils from Reception up to Year 8 and runsalongside the more specific committee groups. The titleand participation of a ‘Committee Member’ is a dynamicand important life skill, the value of which is cementedat Parkside at a young age. Committee discussions arerecorded in the meeting minutes (taken by a Year 8pupil) and are reported directly to the Senior LeadershipTeam and Governors on a regular basis. Actions aremonitored and reviewed before sharing the results withpupils via whole school communications such as theSchool Newsletter and School Assemblies. Leadership atParkside School comes into its own particularly in Years 7& 8, through roles such as Sports Captains, Prefects andthe Head Boy – who leads his team, promoting ParksideSchool’s values: Courage, Confidence and Character.Parkside takes pride both in listening to thepupils’ voices, and in bringing new ideas to life in acomfortable and nurturing environment where they arerespected, listened to, and valued. Making mistakes andunderstanding that not all ideas will be the best are goodlife lessons that pupils at Parkside School learn beforegoing out into the world. Mistakes are celebrated andused as future lessons for success. A challenge-, curiosityandenquiry-led approach to learning is interwoventhroughout the curriculum and opportunities aboundfor ‘facing their fears’. Competitive spirit is important atParkside and will continue to feature in the boys’ everyday activities and lessons, as this will be experiencedthrough life. Pupils’voices help to shape their learning,leisure and experience of school life. Asthey progress through the school weprovide opportunities to take on roles ofresponsibility and leadership, preparingthem for secondary school and beyond.When the children reach Year 6, aPupil Leadership Team is elected througha democratic system involving the wholeschool. This includes electing a head boy,head girl, deputies, and house captains.Each pupil who puts themselves forwardfor one of these roles has the opportunityto give a presentation to the rest of theschool during the Hustings.The Pupil Leadership Team acts asrole models for the younger children andare actively involved in school life. It is allgreat experience which helps them growtheir confidence, leadership skills, andempathy and kindness towards others.Children lower down the school are alsogiven the opportunity to represent theviews of their peers. The School Councilis made up of the head boy and head girlwith elected pupils from Form 1 to Form6. They meet once a week to discussideas for improvements and this is thenfed back to the Headmistress.When it boils down to levels of“It’s good that there is a trustedadult to talk to in private if weneed to.” - Georgia Y6“It’s not just the teachers who makedecisions, the class views are alsotaken into account” – George Y4confidence to speak out, we are alldifferent and some children find it hardto find their voice in a crowd. We listento everyone – especially those who needhelp – and have a dedicated member ofstaff whose responsibility it is to provideboth pastoral and emotional literacy(ELSA) support for children.
