The Priceless Education Supplement sponsored byFuture Leadersand how they are madeWe speak to local schools to find out how theyfoster leadership skills in young peopleSensible SeniorsJoff Powis, Headmaster, tells us how Vinehall’sYear 7s and 8s learn leadership skillsIn today’s rapidly changingworld, leadership has becomea pivotal trait. Prep schools areinstrumental in shaping youngminds, fostering an environmentthat nurtures and develops essentialleadership skills. Here at Vinehall, we want our Seniorsto be serious in their endeavours, striving for success in all they do, whilealso learning not to take themselvestoo seriously. Our hope is that theywill find joy in learning as confident,self-motivated learners, as well asfinding delight and comfort in therelationships they enjoy with theirfriends and teachers. We recognisethat leadership skills are developedby giving children the chance to lead, and over the course of their final twoyears at Vinehall, children have manyopportunities to take on positionsof responsibility as Prefects, HouseCaptains and Committee Leaders.Pupil voice is celebrated andpromoted through a seriesof Committees andthe SchoolCouncil, with our Year8s leading and chairing these forums.I am a huge advocate of the 13+ PrepSchool model and feel it necessary, morethan ever, to sing from the roof tops ofthe incredible opportunities open to asenior prep school child. They are ina very privileged position, benefittingenormously from being at the top ofa teaching and learning pyramid asopposed to being the youngest membersof a senior school community. Thisencourages maturity and independence. Our approach to cultivating leadershipis by empowering our children withvarious responsibilities. Our pupil leadersare actively encouraged to help andaccompany visitors on a school tour orare seen making conversation with themover lunch, where this is the natural andexpected behaviour for the senior pupilsin a prep school. Through personalguidance and feedback, our childrengain confidence in decision-makingand problem solving, integral aspects ofeffective leadership. At Vinehall we create an environmentwhere leadership is not just a concept, but is a lived experience. Through acombination of practical experiences, mentoring and communication, we aimto equip our children with the skills andmindset needed to become the leadersof tomorrow. This innate responsibilityand maturity is without doubt whatthe senior schools shout about when ourPrep pupils move on to them.Learn more at vinehallschool.com91Green ShootsRadnor House Sevenoaks is raisingthe next generation of eco-heroesRadnor House Sevenoaks, a dayschool for ages 2-18, is leading theway in environmental education byempowering students to make impactfulchanges. Already students have planted over100 trees, cut energy consumption, built bughotels and produced honey on site. The school has established a student-ledEco-Committee of 15 pupils from across thePrep and Senior School. The committee meetsweekly to discuss environmental initiatives andhas conducted a full Environmental Review toassess the school’s green status and find areasfor improvement. It then launched Radnor’sEco Promise, with actions that every memberof the school community can pledge to fulfil, from small, everyday activities like usingrecycling bins, to tasks such as tree-planting,beekeeping and reducing power wastage.“We love having the responsibility tomake our school a greener and cleanerspace.” – A Year 8 studentThe committee has linked with theBritish Antarctic Survey to raise awarenessof conservation activities and the value ofscientific study beyond the school campus.Efforts have been acknowledged by KentGreen Schools Awards, which awardedstudents for the impact of the Eco Promiseat the November 2023 ceremony. The teamalso received an Eco-Schools Green Flag withDistinction but, more importantly, it has madea real difference to the school’s environmentalperformance. The committee members and their studentadvocates are well on their way to becomingthe next generation of environmental leaders. To join the Prep School Open morning on16th March, sign up at radnor-sevenoaks.orgpriceless-magazines.com
