Garden“For me springflowers arearguably myfavourite bloomsto work with andthe fact that manyare UK grownand relativelyinexpensive makesthem attainable foreveryone to enjoy.”Jonathan Moseley,floral designerpropagation and flower arranging areall beneficial, raising self-esteem andpromoting a feeling of achievement.Pegasus Homes connects withexternal providers, like JonathanMoseley, a well known floral designer,who has hosted events at Highfields.Jonathan shares his thoughts on thebenefits that flowers and nature canbring to our wellbeing in later life,and offers some top tips on creatingcolourful displays in small areas, andideas for making cut flowers last longer:“Spring flowers offer such welcomecheer after the dark cold days of winter.A bunch of daffodils or hyacinths canimmediately cheer up a room or offerthe most intoxicating fragrance. Forme spring flowers are arguably myfavourite blooms to work with andthe fact that many are UK grown andrelatively inexpensive makes themattainable for everyone to enjoy.Many Spring flowers like tulips,narcissi, iris and hyacinths are bulbflowers and the soft fleshy stems arebest arranged in shallow water asopposed to deep water. Always addflower food into the water whenarranging your flowers as the sugars andminerals which it contains will enablebuds to fully mature into large flowers.Flowers like tulips, which continue togrow once they have been cut, benefitfrom having extra foliage or twigs tosupport the top heavy flowers. Trymixing them with twiggy birch stems,pussy willow or aromatic eucalyptus.Small delicate flowers like snowdrops,muscari, anemones or primulas lookstunning arranged into mini vintageceramic flower rings or ‘glass flowerfrogs’ which can be easily sourcedfrom charity or vintage/junk shops.Mix them with fragrant herbs likerosemary, mint or sage to createa wonderfully fragrant display.Branches of early spring floweringshrubs like forsythia, ribes (floweringcurrant), cornus, witch hazel andcherry blossom can be gatheredearly before the buds begin toopen. Place the bare branches in avase of water in a warm room andthey can be miraculously forcedopen when placed into flowerwithin a couple of weeks.”Pegasus has done some researchrecently with the over 55s and foundthat 57% of respondents enjoy hobbiesto keep them mentally active.
