The Priceless Education SupplementCatherine Mower, Head of ModernForeign Languages at Claremont SeniorSchool, tells us about their internationaloutlook and opportunitiesAt Claremont Senior School, we believein providing students with enrichingexperiences that extend beyond theclassroom, broadening their horizons, andfostering a global perspective with a love oflanguages. We are part of a learning communityof enormous scale so the scope for connectingand collaborating with students from all aroundthe world – as part of the International SchoolsPartnership (ISP) – is extraordinary and unique.Each year, the Cultural Exchange Programmegives students the opportunity to experiencelife at one of our ISP sister schools. Last year,one of our Year 10 students lived and studiedin Ecuador for a month, and a Year 12 studenttravelled to Spain. As both found out aboutthe unique cultures of their chosen countries,their exchange partners joined the Claremontcommunity to experience school life back inEast Sussex.The number of families taking part continues togrow each year with a record number applyingfor the 2024 programme. This runs in tandemwith our Virtual Exchange Programme, whichnext year will enable Year 11 Spanish learners topractise their skills and make new friends withSpanish speakers, whilst being supported by anonline library of bespoke, interactive resources.Multilingualism is a pillar of the Claremontschool vision. French, Spanish and Germanare offered together with a range of ‘first’languages (Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Polishand Persian), for which many students gainformal qualifications. With so many culturesto celebrate and languages to hear at school,promoting the learning of a second languageis a priority for the curriculum, in addition todeveloping life competencies beyond languageand communication skills.Claremont is a local school, with a globaloutlook. The contributions made to schoollife by our vibrant international boardingcommunity undoubtedly enrich the studentexperience for all. Learning experiences beyondthe classroom and on site social interactionsbetween teenagers, add relevance and meaningto our MFL programme.
