You add far lessvalue doing a kitchen extension than ifyou add a bedroom and bathroom.”Imagining the mess that loftconversions create, it makes sense tostart at the top of the house, but itwas a massive help money-wise too.“We had always imagined undertakingwork in phases and by converting theloft first we were able to remortgageand release equity to finance thelater extensions,” says Sophie.By the time they were ready to starton the kitchen – something they’dbeen itching to do, due to the poorlayout of the existing downstairsrooms – they had a much clearer ideaof how to make it flow. “If possible,it’s best to live in a house for a timebefore making changes,” she says, “tosee how the light comes in – how tomake the most of that and the space.“There was already a 1980sextension with a kitchen and a looat the back,” she explains, “and webadly needed to change that becausethe best view of the garden on theground floor was from the loo.”An understanding of scale andproportion helped them to be boldand create a workable and beautifulspace downstairs. “We were keen thatthe extension didn’t push further intothe garden than the previous footprintof the bathroom, so the extension isvery modest and makes use of thedead space that existed to the sideof the house. By adding just over ametre in width, the transformation ofthe space is staggering. Upstairs it hasmade a very narrow family bathroom,”she adds, “but it works well.”Another successful addition is theliving roof on top of the kitchenextension, which acts as a leafythermal regulator. “It’s great from anarchitectural point of view – cool insummer and warm in winter, priceless-magazines.com 50
