User Account Control enables users to know when they are about to do

something that has serious consequences. Here are some examples of

common actions that require administrator privileges:

• Installing and uninstalling applications

• Installing a driver for a device (e.g., a digital camera driver)

• Installing Windows Updates

• Adjusting Windows Firewall settings

• Changing a user’s account type

• Browsing to another user’s directory

Before Vista, Microsoft invented the idea of the Power Users group to

give users almost all the power of an administrator account (to handle most of

the situations just described) without actually giving users the full power of

the account. Assigning a user to the Power Users group still required

someone who knew how to do this, however, so most folks at the small

office/home level simply ignored the Power Users group (see Figure 13-41).
