partition table called active that determines the active partition. During bootup,

the BIOS/POST reads the MBR to find the active partition and boots the

operating system on that partition. Only one partition can be active at a time

because you can run only one OS at a time (see Figure 9-7).

To control multiboot setups, many people use a free Linux-based boot

manager called Grand Unified Bootloader (GRUB), shown in Figure 9-8,

although some people prefer Partition Commander by Avanquest Software to

set up the partitions. When the computer boots, the boot manager software

yanks control from the MBR and asks which OS you want to boot. Once a

partition is set as active, the partition boot sector loads the operating system.
