In order to differentiate the application protocols you see from the

application protocols you don’t see, I’m going to coin the term “utility

protocol” to define any of the hidden application protocols. So, using your

author’s definition, HTTP is an application protocol and DNS is a utility

protocol. All TCP/IP protocols use defined ports, require an application to

run, and have special settings unique to that application. You’ll look at

several of these services and learn how to configure them. As a quick
