a loopback test. A loopback test sends data out of the NIC and checks to see

if it comes back. Some NICs perform only an internal loopback, which tests

the circuitry that sends and receives, but not the actual connecting pins. A

true external loopback requires a loopback plug inserted into the NIC’s port

(see Figure 19-55). If a NIC is bad, replace it.

NOTE Onboard NICs on laptops are especially notorious for breaking due

to frequent plugging and unplugging. On some laptops, the NICs are easy to

replace; others require a motherboard replacement. Or you can always use a

USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
