LCD Panel Technologies LCD panel manufacturers use a lot of variation in

things like the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules within the glass

substrates and the underlying electronics to try to create displays that respond

quickly to user demands and show accurate color and details. The three most

common panel types today are twisted nematic (TN), in-plane switching

(IPS), and vertical alignment (VA). As a general rule, TN panels are the

fastest but offer adequate color; IPS panels display beautiful color; and VA

panels fall somewhere in between the two in terms of responsiveness and

color accuracy. To understand the variations—which you need to do—

requires a lot of discussion in how they reproduce specific monitor features.

After backlights, we’ll discuss the feature variations and then come back at

the end to compare the three main panel technologies.
