Environment Variables

Any system you access has important values stored in variables that make up

what we call the environment of a running program. Some of these values are

set systemwide, but these values can also be set by the user, the

script/program, or even the shell it is running in. These values, which we call

environment variables, tell running programs all sorts of things, like what the

current directory or user is, or where to store temporary files. Figure 15-19

shows the default environment variables for program run under the scottj user

account.
