sfc

The Windows sfc (System File Checker) command scans, detects, and

restores important Windows system files, folders, and paths. Techs often turn

to sfc when Windows isn’t quite working correctly and use it to find and fix

critical Windows system files that have become corrupt. If you run sfc and it

finds issues, it attempts to replace corrupted or missing files from cached

DLLs (backups of those system files) located in the

Windows\System32\Dllcache\ directory. Without getting very deep into the

mad science involved, just know that you can use sfc to correct corruption.

To run sfc from a command prompt, enter sfc /scannow. To familiarize

yourself with sfc’s switches, enter sfc /? (see Figure 15-15).
