LAKES
e s s w i t h . . .
everything about the Great Lakes region, which spans eight us states
and two canadian provinces, is huge. Alongside a staggering amount of
freshwater and fishing oppotunities, they are a remarkable benefit to the
economy in terms of tourism and more than 1.8 million anglers per year.
T
Lakes were
formed about
10,000 years
ago when
glaciers
receded from
North America at the end of the
last Ice Age.
These vast inland seas contain
one-fifth of the world’s fresh
surface water and are home to
177 species of fish. The Great
Lakes fishery is a key feature
of the region’s history, culture,
environment, and economy.
The five Great Lakes
themselves are Superior,
Michigan, Huron, Erie and
Ontario and are either on or
near the US/Canadian border.
Their commercial, recreational
and tribal fisheries are
collectively valued at more than
$7 billion annually and support
more than 75,000 jobs.
Each year, there is $278
billion in bilateral US-Canadian
trade in the Great Lakes area
– more than the entire region
trades with countries like
Mexico, China, UK, Germany
and Japan combined.
With 107 million residents,
51 million jobs and a GDP of
US$6 trillion, if the region were
its own country, it would have
the third biggest economy in the
world.
The lakes attract visitors
from around the world and
support a tourism and recreation
sector that provides economic
sustainability and growth to
coastal communities.
NATIVE FISH SPECIES
The Great Lakes support
139 native species. Sculpins,
gizzard shad, several species of
shiners, and ciscoes sustain top
predators including lake trout,
walleye, large and smallmouth
bass, and brook trout. In
addition, some forage species
such as ciscoes and yellow
perch provide recreational
and commercial fishing
opportunities.
