June 22, 1932 - Dec 13, 2023 

It is with heavy hearts the family of Loreen 

Dawn Anderson (nee Hird) announce her 

peaceful passing on December 13, 2023. 

Dawn was born in Nelson B. C. on June 22, 

1932 to Don and Dorothy Hird. She was predeceased 

by her sister Con and her husband 

Alfred. Dawn leaves behind to mourn her loss 

three children, Shannon (Ed), Darroll (Rose) 

and Lisa (Mark), eight siblings, Doug, Lynn, 

Joan, Jan, Pen, Pat, Naomi and Donald, six 

grandchildren and four great grandchildren. 

Gardening and quilting were two of Dawn’s 

lifelong passions and she did both to perfection. 

She took her talents with her when she 

moved from Slocan to Mountain Lake Seniors 

Community in 2022 where she beautified a 

patio with her gardening skills and continued 

to sew for her great grandchildren and create 

several more quilts. 

Dawn cherished her friendships of which 

there were many, both lifelong and recent. 

Always curious, generous and 

productive, we loved that about her. 

Thank you to the staff at Mountain Lake 

Seniors Community for their kindness, Dr. 

Woodward and Dr. Merritt for the compassion 

and care they provided our Mother.

of burgeoning woodworking 

talent, Selkirk 

College alumni shone 

bright in Las Vegas 

with stellar results in 

the Fresh Wood Student 

Furniture Competition. 

Every two 

years, the Association 

of Woodworking & Furnishing Suppliers (AWFS) holds a massive 

fair at the Las Vegas Convention Centre that brings together 

all elements of the global industry. Woodworking professionals, 

suppliers, manufacturers and innovators from around the world 

gather for an event that takes up more than 300 football fields of 

space. 

One of the focal points of the fair is the Fresh Wood competition 

that throws a spotlight on outstanding work from both high 

school and post-secondary students. A Canadian leader in training 

and education, Selkirk College’s Fine Woodworking Program 

was well represented with six graduates being accepted into the 

final 20 post-secondary projects featured in the competition. 

“I was happy to have a chance to show my work at such an 

important competition, it’s something that I am proud to have 

created,” says Shep Zambonelli, a member of the Class of 2022 

cohort who was entered in the Case Goods category. “I didn’t 

really think it was going to win, I just thought it was cool that 

they partially paid for a trip and I could go down there to see all 

the different projects.”

Zambonelli did win, capturing first place in his category and 

also receiving the prestigious Judges’ Nod for his beautifully 

crafted apothecary cabinet. Also bringing back accolades from 

Nevada were Selkirk College grads Julian Hengesbach who 

nabbed second place in cabinets and Alex Morrison who captured 

second place in the tables category. 

Zambonelli grew up on Toronto Island in a small vehicle-less 

community a short ferry ride across from Canada’s largest city. 

Encouraged to pursue his creative interests—his mom is an 

artist— Zambonelli was drawn to design and working with his 

hands from a young age. After high school, he headed east to 

Dalhousie University in Halifax where he started a post-secondary 

pathway in business. After two years of classroom learning, 

he parted ways with his initial pursuit. 

“I found myself in university taking a program that didn’t 

really line-up with what I wanted to do, which was to work with 

my hands,” Zambonelli says. 

In search of powder-filled British Columbia winter ski days, 

Zambonelli moved to Fernie where he started working with a 

company that builds timber frame homes throughout the East 

Kootenay. While he worked through earning his Red Seal in 

carpentry, a colleague told him about Selkirk College’s Fine 

Woodworking Program and in September 2021 he started the 

nine-month program. 

A standout student, Zambonelli appreciated learning a branch 

of woodworking that takes extra levels of patience, skill and 

creativity. With encouragement from the uber-talented instructional 

team and access to the top-notch shop on Nelson’s Silver 

King Campus, he took full advantage of the program’s learning 

environment. For the project that caught the eye of judges in 

Las Vegas, Zambonelli harkened back to his days growing up 

amongst his parent’s fondness for antique furniture while creating

a stunning piece that is functional. Currently a self-employed 

contractor with a wealth of skills in carpentry, cabinet making 

and fine finishing, Zambonelli’s time at Selkirk College has added 

important depth to his chosen career. As for his achievement in 

Las Vegas, the award-winning apothecary cabinet sits at his front 

door where it is well used. 

“I don’t want it to be a delicate piece, I want it to be used just 

like an apothecary cabinet would have been traditionally been 

used,” says the 30-year-old. “I like the look of unfinished, antique 

furniture because that is what I grew up with. There is finish on it 

to protect it a little bit, but I want to the wood to be seen.”

Taghum Hall Starts Off New Year 

Taghum Hall invites folks to start the year off on a new beat with two 

workshops and a concert. Djembe drum Grand Master Michael Taylor 

offers workshops on Friday, January 12 at 3:30 - 5pm and 7 – 8:30pm, with a 

concert on Saturday, January 13 at 7pm, all part of the Taghum Hall Presents 

performance series. Taylor is the Director of the Chicago branch of the Tam 

Tam Mandingue Djembe Academy school of percussion and 

the founder and driving force behind Holy Goat Percussion. He 

has recorded three CDs of original West African djembe-based 

music and counts among his mentors and co-performers Grand 

Master Mamady Keita, Grand Master Famoudou Konaté, Yaya 

Diallo, and many more. 

Also appearing this month as part of the series is the six-piece 

Toronto-based world music ensemble Tamar Ilana and Ventanas

Folk Music Award nominees perform in more than 20 languages, including 

Ladino, Spanish, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Hebrew, French, Romani and 

Arabic as they interweave flamenco, Sephardic and Balkan music, and their 

own original compositions. 

“It’s a great start to a new year,” says events coordinator Heather Haake. 

In addition to the performance series, Taghum Hall is home to all kinds of 

community-building events, Haake explains. “We’ve also got Winter Markets 

coming up on January 20, February 17, and March 16 from 10am - 

3pm, so you can see what creative things your friends and neighbours have 

been up to. The soup will be on!” 

Rounding out this month’s offerings is the perennially-popular Robbie 

Burns Night on January 25 from 6:30 - 9pm, replete with bagpipes, haggis 

and fun for auld folk and bairns and everyone in between. “This free event 

requires only the contribution of a bit-o-scran—a potluck dish—and yer 

fine auld selves,” says Haake. 

Heads up for early in February: a lantern-making workshop with artist 

Lily Mayall is scheduled in anticipation of the annual Polka Dot Lantern 

Festival (Feb 9 & 10). The workshop happens Saturday, February 3 from 

10am - 2pm, with proceeds to Taghum Hall’s kitchen reno project.

Saturday, Feb 24th, hundreds of Nelsonites will walk together 

in the chilly, dark streets. Participants will better understand the 

experience of being on the streets during a cold Canadian winter. 

Nelson CARES Society wants to thank the community wholeheartedly 

for showing up each and every year in such a big way 

to support this fundraising event. In the past nine years that Nelson 

CARES Society has been hosting this event, the community 

has raised almost $550,000. This year, the funds raised will go to 

support the Ready for Home Program that operates out of Ward 

Street Place and helps those residents navigate government and 

healthcare systems so they can remain housed and move toward 

a better life. 

The very first event in 2015 had almost 400 walkers and over 

1000 donors, last year they broke a new record with over $100,000 

raised locally. Nelson CARES Society is excited to see what fundraising 

heights can be reached in 2024. During the holidays, as we 

gather with friends and family, please consider creating a Coldest 

Night fundraising team.

RDKB HomeSmart 

Raven Atherton has joined the Regional District of Kootenay 

Boundary (RDKB) as the Retrofit Program Coordinator for its new 

RDKB HomeSmart Program. Her position and the program are 

outcomes of the RDKB’s commitment to implementing its five-year 

climate action plan. Raven grew up in a family of carpenters and 

earned her red seal carpentry ticket at 21. She is a certified Energy 

Advisor and brings unique skills to the role to help the RDKB with 

this important program. 

As the RDKB HomeSmart Program prepares for its public launch 

in January 2024, Raven will play a key role in guiding Kootenay 

Boundary residents through the complexities of home energy and 

resiliency retrofits. From planning to helping access rebates, she 

will provide personalized support and guide residents to the information 

they need. 

Expressing her enthusiasm, Raven shares, “I’m looking forward 

to helping local people make improvements to their homes that 

will increase comfort and resiliency. I really enjoy helping people 

while also encouraging energy-wise practices and advocating for
