1971
Anthony Rowlands
Elected in May 2023 as the new Mayor of the City and District of St Albans for
2023/24, becoming the city’s 479th Mayor. Anthony has been a District Councillor
since 1986 (with a short three-year break). He will represent St Albans at events
(in addition to chairing Full Council meetings), promoting charitable and voluntary
causes. He chose ‘All Ages Together’ as the theme of his civic year, aiming to work
towards improving social inclusion, accessibility, and wellbeing across the District
during his year as Mayor.

Edward Astle
Appointed Honorary Graduate of the University of Manchester in October 2023.
1976
Donald Savoie
Promoted to the rank of Companion of the Order of Canada (C.C.)which was awarded
in May 2022 by the Governor General of Canada. The C.C. recognises “outstanding
achievement and merit of the highest degree”, especially in service to Canada or to
humanity at large.
1980
Alan Gillies
Appointed in 2022 to the position of Professor of Health Care Management at the
International University of Applied Sciences in Germany (IU Internationale Hochschule
Fernstudium). He is to carry out his duties half-time, alongside his existing honorary
appointments as Honorary Professor at UCLAN in Preston and Doctor Honoris
Causa at the Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca,
Romania (Universitatea de Medicină și Farmacie „Iuliu Hațieganu” din Cluj-Napoca).
1981
John Vice
Awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the King’s Birthday
Honours List in June 2023, for services to Parliament. John was Editor of Debates
at the House of Lords from 2012, until retiring from Parliament in December 2022.
